Prime Minister Wickremesinghe took a jab at the outcry the Opposition has been making since Easter Sunday attacks, stating the opponents thought the government ‘would be completely destroyed after Easter attacks’.
PM Wickremesinghe made these remarks at an event in Homagama last evening, where he spoke on attempts made by the Opposition to consolidate power in the aftermath of a national tragedy.
“Our opponents thought we would be completely destroyed with the Easter Sunday bomb attacks. But we have the courage and the strength to face any challenge or catastrophe,” he added.
He also spoke highly of the development efforts undertaken by the UNFGG which he said has brought unprecedented development to the grassroots level. He says the current development drive even exceeds records set by previous UNP governments during 1974-1994.
“The Opposition says there is no government in the country. For the last 21 years when they were running a so-called ‘strong government’, they were unable to provide even Samurdhi benefits to deserving families…Whereas, the present UNP government has managed grant Samurdhi benefits to over 600,000 families within a year,” he added.
Having inherited a bankrupt country in 2015, the PM says the government has done a lot to rebuild the country and the economy and it is the opponents who can’t stomach the development drive who are critical of the government.

We don’t have here a control mechanism that the interpretation of Ranil’s statement won’t go beyond the context boundaries because the original Sinhala speech is not available; nevertheless, there is some substance. So we put out this comment.
This doesn’t sound like open talk to public or open challenge to the opposition- we name it as Slap Party, but thought the speech is silent on it. Lot of equivocal terminology! Ranil sounds like he has completed a self-assessment of UNP’s performance after the Easter Sunday attack. Is that telling that he is feeling here that he passed some milestone aftermath of Easter Sunday? Is he concluding that he is out of the wood and strong enough to reply to the opponent? In this, his conclusion is Easter Sunday did not damage him as much the opponents wanted, but his developments plans started before the Easter Sunday is pretty well in track.
There is a unanimous opinion out in the sky with IC, Local Media, and Lankawe mass that government too had its hand in Easter Sunday attack. Beyond government, it is felt that the opposition’s corporation too was there. All 225 members in the parliament accepted it was their fault the attack took place. So far, Parliament, Cabinet and President have not put out any evidences of any of their endeavor to stop the attack. Evidences given by police force at the PSC suggested that president was actively blocking any effort to arrest the bombing. If Ranil is seeing the turning point of neutralizing the Easter Sunday disaster, we have no vision of that point. India is continuing to warn about the future attacks. Muslims Arabization accusation has not reached any end. Public officials still under obligation to follow age old Buddhist style dress code. Muslim ministers were encouraged with in UNP to resist “resign and face” investigation. Then they resigned as a union, but by this investigation has become a fraud. There was an accusation it was Ranil’s consultation for Muslim Ministers resigning as union. Now again accusation is there on Ranil that he was insisting them to take back the positions as union; he opposed Kaffir and Haleem taking oath individually. Ranil is seen here as manipulation Muslims Ministers for his popularity on the Easter issue. Muslims are complaining that many of their community’s innocent members are arrested under PTA. Opposition had very good time during the LG election. Opposition destroyed that buildup during the untimely Coup. But it is felt opposition has rebuilt most of it after Aanduwa’s flawed Easter Sunday handling. There is new unrest by Muslims opposing upgrading Tamil predominant Kalmunai North which government ignored for favor of Arabian Money yielding ministers. When, even after passing two months of the attack, the things are so unsettled on every aspects of the Easter Sunday,, it seems to be difficult to understand where and how the opposition is defeated here as per Ranil’s talk.

He is planning to meet Old Brother Prince at hospital, whom was not visited in Singapore by any other famous figure from Lankawe other than Ranil. For Ranils enemy on this, it seems too difficult to be defined. We don’t see any point Ranil to celebrate or brag other than it looks like he has had American State Secretary’s trip cancelled. Colombo media, without evidence, predicted his visit was to sign SOFA/VFA agreement. It was said UNP government was against on that with West. Is that Ranil saying that India…… America and others expected Lankawe to go devastated by Easter attack, but Aanduwa had its controls on the attack do they did not allow it to escalate, but foreign intelligence units didn’t know that?
