Pandora Papers: ICIJ’s Questions To Nirupama Rajapaksa & Thirukumar Nadesan

Former Sri Lanka Minister and a niece of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Nirupama Rajapaksa’s name has been mentioned in Pandora Papers.

According to the ICIJ report Nirupama Rajapaksa and Nadesan together controlled a shell company they used to buy luxury apartments in London and Sydney, and to make investments. Nadesan set up other shell companies and trusts in secrecy jurisdictions, and he used them to obtain lucrative consulting contracts from foreign companies doing business with the Sri Lankan government and to buy artwork.

In 2018, one of the companies, Pacific Commodities, transferred 31 paintings and other South Asian art pieces to the Geneva Freeport, an ultra-secure warehouse where assets are not subject to taxes or duties.

In confidential emails to Asiaciti Trust, a Singapore-based offshore services provider, a longtime adviser of Nadesan’s put his overall wealth, as of 2011, at more than $160 million. ICIJ couldn’t independently verify the figure. Asiaciti Trust managed some of Nadesan’s offshore companies and trusts, with assets valued at about $18 million, according to an ICIJ analysis.

Tirukumar Nadesan and wife Nirupama Rajapaksa

The questions below posed to both Nirupama Rajapaksa and Thirukumar Nadesan by the ICJI. They were failed to answer by September 20, 2021:

Questions for Nirupama Rajapaksa:

Documents we have seen show that from the early 1990s until early 2010s (during part of Sri Lanka’s conflict) you were a “controlling party” of Rosetti Ltd, an offshore company used to receive consultancy fees and buy properties in Sydney and London. Is this correct? What was your role in Rosetti?

Did you declare your ownership of Rosetti when you became a member of parliament, if required to do so by local law? Did you declare your ownership of the properties?

Did you disclose ownership of Rosetti to the government agencies that hired your company as a contractor? If no, why not?

Documents we have seen show you are one of the beneficiaries of the Pacific Trust, which holds a $51 million art collection. Is this accurate? If so, did you declare the trust to tax authorities, if required to do so by local law?

What was your role in the offshore companies and trusts set up by your husband Nadesan, namely Sri Nithi Trust, Pacific Trust, Pacific commodities, Pallene, Chalan Oil and Red Ruth Investments?

In a 2014 interview, you said “As women, we have better qualities than men and are more honest and are less vulnerable to bribes and corruption.” Can you elaborate on that please?

Questions for Thirukumar Nadesan:

A 2011 document we have seen says your family fortune amounts to 100 million pounds ($160 million) while, in 2017, the Sri Nithi Trust and the Pacific Trust combined held about $18 million in total. Is it accurate? What is the source of your wealth?

Documents we have seen show that you set up consultancy companies called Rosetti and Pacific commodities in Jersey, a known tax haven. The companies provided consultancy for government contracts in Sri Lanka. Why did you establish the companies offshore instead of incorporating them in Sri Lanka?

Your company Pacific Commodities Ltd. provided services to Sumitomo Corp, as well as to German company Contract GMBH. What was your company’s role? What type of consultancy did it provide? Did you use your political connections with the Rajapaksa family to obtain the contracts?

According to records, Rosetti was used to buy apartments in Sydney and London worth more than $4 million. Is this accurate? Why did you use a company to own properties instead of buying directly under your name?

Documents show you retrieved thousands of dollars in income from London property in cash – why cash?

Files show that in 2013 you applied for Cypriot citizenship, and that your children’s application was successful. Why did you apply? Did you obtain it?

Documents show that you own an art collection with 51 pieces, including artworks by Raj Ravi Varma and George Keyt, worth about $4 million, and that, in 2018, you moved it to the Geneva freeport — a tax free warehouse — using your Pacific Commodities company. Is it accurate? Why did you store it in the freeport? And why do you own it through an offshore company?

In 2015, you requested Asiaciti to send your documents via courier saying that your source of funds could be “challenged.” Can you please explain what you were concerned about?

In 2016, you were arrested and charged with embezzlement. Authorities alleged you acted as proxy for Basil Rajapaksa and helped him build a villa on your property in Malwana, using Rs. 250 million from public funds. How do you respond? What was the outcome of the investigation?

What’s your relationship with government officials: Basil, Mahinda and Gotabaya Rajapaksa?

In an 2016 email to Asiaciti trust officers, you told them not to disclose information to a Dubai banker who was assisting you in opening a bank account for your company FP FZE. Why didn’t you want to provide details of your activity to the bank?

Files show that, from at least 2002 to 2007, your company Rosetti made annual $140,000 loans to Red Ruth Investments, another company of yours. Red Ruth then distributed the funds to your Cook Islands trust Sri Nithi and other shell companies. What was the purpose of those transactions? What was the source of those funds?

According to media reports, in 2018, Red Ruth was investigated by Sri Lankan authorities who found $22 million in a Hong Kong account associated with the company. What was the outcome of the investigation? What was the source of those funds?

Why did you choose known tax havens such as Jersey, the Cook Islands and Samoa to incorporate your companies and trusts?

Have you declared any of your companies and assets to the Sri Lankan authorities?

What was your wife’s role in all of your companies and trusts?”

    Dear senstive readers,
    .
This country is made for thesurvival of the high criminals. It returned to them again, since GOOD governance is not understandable to the average. A rape victim would love to go after the perpetrators, srilanken people (majority) cant be without criminals.
No matter even if the last coin of the poor people are sucked, MAHINDA Rajapkshes and his bastard sons are held above altar…. , people would not say anything against them. In any other llike minded country, people would line up to tear off them into pieces. … but senses are permament impaired in our people by media mafia men work for high criminal politicians.
This is well studied by Rajapakshes criminals from the day one. We talk of lack of energies for the future in our island. But I believe, Lightning will be a threat to the country as a retribution for all what these criminals and their supporters deliberately made…… but wearing SATAKAYA and pirithnoole also around their penises.

The crime investigations based on Gampaha palace , if did properly. would have been mroe than enough to corner…. KING of money launderers, but srilanken courts failed to do the job… , alleged criminal Basil et al. what happened ? Why do srilanken judges and lawyer community stay mum today ? Why all others dont seem to utter a single word against these high criminals.

Why dont they expose their assets, collected wealth in the US of which they are citizens yet today ?

If SRILANKEN public sector did their job to the best, not a single AUDITOR general has chased on the issues so far ? All these men and women have something in common …. srilanken pig genes.

LM. I can name six judges who issued orders not based on the material facts of cogent evidence pegged firmly laid down to ground without a fraction of an iota of doubt in court. Instead they got paid handsomely to turn fiction to facts and facts to fiction. Not one Srilankan dared to question the corrupt justice system because the BASL is in the thick of it.

Let Glory be to our Hero, Hon. Mr. Ranjan Ramanayake presently serving a term of RI for calling the Spade the Spade. Down with the corrupt justice system.

Add to RR, that indomitable Nagananda K who for directly accusing a judge, was made to lose his lawyers privileges and debarred for 3 years to practice, by the other brother judges. Is that not conflict of interest.

Please expose their names without delay if CT permits.. those judges owe a lot to this society. If they were foreigners?????? All kind of conspiracy theories would be breaking news head lines of mlechcha media who work as toilttpapers of political crook s.

LM. I complained to the Judicial Service Commission. It was shoved under the carpet because one of the three sitting members is one of them. It is like asking the thieve’s mother to go and catch the THIEF.

            Never stop complaining….no other options.

With this being the reality, how can the youth ever dream of a better country. I see something … I really dont know what it is….

Sociologists, society experts, psychologists, and the like authorities should join together to rebuild from scratch in order to make a real chanc, but by placing the law and order above on the top of the list. No physical R & D would help so long people remain – highly corrupted- be it minor or major any crimes should be punished.
That video of a POWERFUL secretary of defence ministry is said to be offended by an interogation of a police officer…… as if the kind of buggers would do real good work loads…. the kind of police officers should be given ” janapthi sammana”…. however, the consequence has been – giving him a change to his working location. How come ? All these are not addressed enough by PADADA media men…. they just remain holding torch to RAJAPAKSHES.

LM. The entire issue is solely technical. The rules governing the courts of law have been shredded and incinerated. The Defense Counterclaim is highly toxic which should have landed both the defendant and the defense attorney in jail without question. I put it to JVP and NPP based on the rudimentary principle which is gospel in a court of law that it is only the truth and nothing but the truth that counts. In this exceptional case what is established is concocted lies and refined lies. Every citizen’s right to a free fair trial is guaranteed by the Constitution, is audaciously violated by the amalgamation of highly corrupt individuals. It has nothing to do with any particular individual or party. Surprisingly, the two entities who are supposed to be white knights standing up for citizen’s rights remain like dead mules. Here is another Pandora’s Box. Which of the Boxes for the discerning voter to put down the “X” at the polling booth?

We need more Ranjan Ramanayakes and Nagananda Kodituwakkus, who will fearlessly “speak truth to power”.

Each of us must do what we can, but some must also “live to fight another day”. However, if we cannot do either, we should not (as Rajan Hoole says) provide excuses for others to “evade responsibility.”
        .
“All politicians” are hypocrites, but don’t they talk! Not only the Rajapaksas. However, there are exceptions. I spent yesterday examining an exception – a man and a country whom few talk about: Sultan Qaboos of Oman. He ruled effectively for 49 years, dying only in 2020. I worked in Oman, knew that he was exemplary, but it was yesterday that I came across material which showed how he acted. In such contrast to King Abdullah of Jordan, who has been shown up by the Pandora Papers to be a smooth talking hypocrite.
        .
I will post that material here later, but go there to talk about Qadri (and Rajani’s sister) whom I knew.
        .
But this article, by an “occasional writer”, is also relevant:

Sinhala_Man: Do you need any more “INDISCIPLINE”, “SELF GLORIFIED”, “KNOW ALLS” who think NO END of Themselves and in no way amenable to “TEAM” playing, like Ranjan Ramanayake and Nagananda Kodithuwakku to put in place of our Governing functions of the country? Not my choice.

            Simon,
            .
I am afraid, beg to differ,
now you have gone further and call ” RR too as not a team player”.
            .
Is that right ? I have no idea about NK, being not a team player, but RR ? Please rethink of whatever you add about RR. NK and his constitutional expertise could be naive,…. from what he has been adding, but I dont think he is dishonest.
            .
I think RR and SF or the like ones in srilanken politics are relatively fearless cadidates when it goes to reveal high crimes.
            :
Remember, how RR revealed paedophile chief buddgagama monks molested child monk….. this was deliberately buried under carpet by leadership just becasue the place given to UNEDUCATED BASTARDs hidden behind SIVURA should be there in order political crooks to achieve their goals; which is to mislead the KADAMANDIYA like clusters again and again.
            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vc3Z396fjMA

The kind of child molestation incidents are common in Thailand and Myanmar, but the buddhists beliefs in that part of the world are totally different that of ours.

Would that be the same, if MAHARAJA ‘s Rocket Chichi baby would have been caught by MONK-CHILD molestation ?
              .
Do you think that the same ignorance of the srilanken PRESS would be the case, if highly abusive Aluthgamage’s daugher or son would have been raped ?

I wish I could know form an EXPERT how some heart breaking issues be forgotten by SRILANKEN press ? That liliput Dalas Alahaperuma is now the media minister, but why does former journalist bring no new reforms to false headliness in MEDIA telecasts and broadcasts ? This continues in srilanken media as if lawlessness is governing today. This was not the case during GOOD governance period.

Dear L: Thanks. I never said or assessed “RR” and “NK” as “Dishonest”. Please read through the words I used to describe (as per my understandings) in my comment to “Sinhala_Man”. Re. “RR” – Do you approve (especially a politician) resorting to “Recording” telephone calls without informing the person on the other end? Can that be rated as “Self Discipline” or “Decorum”? It is nothing but, “Immaturity” and “Indiscipline”. I was living in a foreign land for a long time. In that country, you give a telephone call to the public/private outfit, they say: “Your call will be recorded for quality and training purposes”. Those are “Standard” courtesies that even being an “MP” didn’t know and practice. What more to talk of. He put a lot of people (holding positions of Judges and High Govt. Officials who were obliged to talk to him as an MP) into trouble. He got what he deserved, of course much “Heghvior than what I expected. Continued..

continued: Re. “NK”. As I said many times he suffers from a heavy dose of “EGO”. In Buddha’s teachings, it is called “Sakkaya Ditti” – “You know all and that knowing is the only “Right”. You remember how he “Introduced” a “Constitution” supposed to have been drafted by a “Team” of “13 Professionals”. He never divulged who those “Professionals” were. I know most of them have deserted him today. He carried this to all political parties including the JVP and wanted that to be “Accepted”. When “Refused”(obviously) he started criticizing them but at the same time wanted their support to get what he wanted. Who will do that? He never “Knew” how he should come forward as a candidate for the Presidential election. It was “MACO” who introduced him to a political party named “Api Okkoma Pura Vasio”. Now he has filed an action against them too, including “MACO”. He thinks only of his “Constitution”, but nothing of “Economic”, “Social”, “Political” solutions that the country badly needs. He is “NO LEADER” and a “TEAM PLAYER” at all. Could be good as a “Dictator”, perhaps. Some more to say, but will stop here.

Thank you. I agree with you what you have added above. Anyways i have lots of buts.
And please also share what you think of MACO’s act not having respected all the prerequisites that an election nominee should bring in order to become the presidential candidate ?
                  .
I agree with you NK being bit naive as many returned home after spending years in a developed country. Anyways, I dont think that he is no right to have raised that issue against ” pattapal hora ” MACO, never did his job respecting the EC guidelines. In the same time, pertinent question arises is what did all other PE candidates stayed as if their senses were fully impaired ? Not even Sajith Premadasa, nor AKD had the bravery to question whether Gotabaya renounced his US citizenship by the time, he was given the nomination. If the kind of ignorance would have been found in German elections, entire nation would have gone mad. I am not German, I have been working with them for such a long time, and they would not tolerate even any minor deviations of that nature.

            Dear Simon,
            Consider this as well.
It is this ‘team playing’ that CORRUPTS. For the sake of a “perceived unity of team” everyone is made to tone DOWN to a ‘mean’ or ‘basic average’. It is the party system that corrupts even the best-intentioned.
In the end, you are left with “diluted ideas to fit all” for the team.
Real progress is from a very few like-minded individuals with good leadership and ideas for progress.

Even in clothing, one size fits all is comfy not does not bring out the best in an individual.

            I agree absolutely, Simon.
            .
Ranjan Ramanayake is at least in the SJB. He’s got the popular appeal which is also necessary. To me his limitations are shown up by his advertising his ‘”A” for General English – a subject that serves a purpose, but it certifies little. I’ve met Naganada.
            .
It is sometimes necessary to “waste” our votes on “no-hopers”, but these guys now make a practice of appealing to us to reject all others and embrace only them.

“clique” – I know that sounds negative. My effort to state that these politicians have got to serve us! Actually, right now, I have no complaints against them them, Simon.
            .
Where your support is going to be is for you to decide, but please, don’t fragment the opposition to this worst of governments. Don’t sit on the fence. Somebody came up with different imagery: “Post turtle”!

LM: This Sepal used AKD’s video clip and directed a scathing attack on him ultimately asking people not to vote for any of those in the Opposition. What does Sepal means and what is the “Alternative” he offers? I directed a comment in “Raw Sinhala Filth” as said by my Burampy Singo Maama of Kadamandita. I am still doubtful of this Sepal, Nagananda, Suddath, and now gone missing Chapa Bandara.I suspect their “Game Plan” as “Staged” by the “Saffron Brigade”. Just watch, how all these fellows find some “Loop Hole” to direct an attack on “AKD” and sling mud at JVP/NPP for no reason. I asked them: What is your ALTERNATIVE? No reply yet. So be watchfull od these “Wolfs” in “Sheep’s” clothes.

I saw that video where Sepal explains the Pandora Papers to the gaping multitude, but once more he undermines any effort that may be made to vote the crooks out of office.
            .
I gave the guy a chance; I actually visited his home behind the Bellanwila Temple (that’s the Dehiwela area). Spoke to his daughter at the gate, made the offering of a packet of biscuits – or whatever. It was all right his not being in, touring the hill country, he was. This was some time before the Parliamentary elections when he came up with his “clever” solution of NOTA.

I don’t understand how any thinking person can have anything to do with him after that.

Your first sentence is not really correct.

“This country is made for the survival of the high criminals”

You are putting the cart before the horse. It is the other way round. The country is NOT made for the survival of the high criminals. It is high criminals are made because of the weakness of the law and the weakness of the system. The Parliamentarians have been given a hand to be both a lawmaker and also a law administrator, which should not be. One cannot have a hand in both, it is the ideal grounds for germination for ‘corruption with impunity and immunity.

Take my word a judge cannot have also police powers. An accountant cannot also be a cashier. You can only be one NOT both. Take away the administrative powers from lawmakers and ensure it is implemented then the politicians will know they cannot hide behind their dual rights, the rights to make law, and also retain the rights to administer and commit unaccountable corruption, if they do they will easily get caught and be charged without any fears by the law enforcement agencies of revenge.

None of these politicians were corrupt before they became parliamentarians. It all started after they became lawmakers and they saw the ideal fertile grounds to mint money.

        Blabla

        Come to the point !

But judges can set examples… lawyers could do the job to the top…. if LAW AND ORDER would be maintained by the politicians to the letter. .

        What is a lawmaker called?
A legislator (or lawmaker) is a person who writes and passes laws, especially someone who is a member of a legislature. Legislators are often elected by the people of the state.

Ballage wede ada buruwa baragena…. Lawmakers do the job of the authorities because they dont REALLY know what their responsibilities are. This is valid from GOTABAYA to all other ministers, MPs and PS members.

LM, I’ve told you again and again that you’re a romantic optimist who imagines that you can wave your magic wand, and all will be well.
          .
We all know that judges SHOULD set examples, but even the good judge whom Brecht put into the Caucasian Chalk Circle, (Azdak) usually accepts bribes, and gives his brilliant judgement only because Grusha’s is an extreme case.
          .
          Lawyers are usually much worse.
          .
So, there is some truth in what Blabla says.

Just like Rajapaksas mega gold fraud in 2011. They used Tamil front men to do the deal so Deshapremi idiots don’t suspect Rajapaksas even if caught.

With the help of some Tamilians, Rajapaksas sold all Vanni people’s gold robbed in 2009 and then sold all the gold at the Central Bank too.

        Dear SarathP,
        .
These huge amounts of money mean little to us. That’s a huge jump from Arjuna Ranatunga to Mahinda Rajapaksa, isn’t it?
        .
Arjuna Ranatunga: 68,000,000 – US Dollars, of course.
        Mahinda Rajapaksa 18,000,000,000 $
        .
        CBK – only 1,400,000 – $ US
        .
“leelagemalli” below (as I type), says Nirupama and Nadesan are richest with this amount: 160,000,000 – $ US
        .
You see, we poor fellows have a problem even comprehending such figures!

Pandora can go fly a kite.
All with average intelligence, save money for a rainy day and for the future of themselves and their dependents. This is human nature.
It is HOW they collect it, is the question. This happens the world over.
If there is a law to explain wealth, it should apply equally to all. Is there such a law? If so, who enforces it?
How many politicians have declared/accounted for their wealth?

      justice,

What nonsense! This is not their money to play around with, but the money of the struggling Lankan masses. Other places, even ones in the Us that amass their billions, have done so out of ingenuity and innovation, even if they have not paid their taxes properly (mostly because at one time there weren’t adequate tax structures in place). But in Motherland, this is the money of the hard-working labourers and maids of the Middle East. It is the money taken from loans from China that our suffering Lankans will have to somehow pay back.

I have to agree with you on this. If such nepotism happened in America, there would be blood on the streets. But Sri Lankan cowards would not dare any dissent against any government be it GR’s or Ranil’s.

The JR and Premadasa regimes made sure that the prospect of any future revolt was nullified with the way they crushed the dissenters. They paved the way for looters like the GR/MR family to go about with their family business.

You don’t get it. In Tony Blair’s UK, the people literally don’t have to react by tearing them into pieces. They know they have a legal system that will ensure justice is done.

Whereas in amuthu atey thiyana rate, the legal system will ensure fellas like Nada and Niru will walk off scott free. While bathgottas at the very least will just utter a few dirty words and suck up with it.

        MyView,

Besides, in Western countries, things like Art-work are part of their national heritage, pre-renaissance investments…including art-work collected from around their colonial world. Real estate is also part of their colonial legacy that props their currencies up. Their monetary excesses boosts up these investments and they encourage other countries (no questions asked) to invest. Why the Hell is Sri Lankan government jumping into those markets like we are part of the first world, without investing it in the livelihoods of Lankan people? How drunk on power are these mad fools?

        • 5

          Hi RTF.
Noted your observations on Art and Investment. Not really relevant, may be, and does not arise from my comment.

MyView….sorry, I meant to address ReginaldShamalPerera.

Guess Blairs and others must be forced to pay taxes. But in Sri Lanka, these investments are beyond taxes. These investments (which do not belong to our heritage), should not have been made in the first place. For Blairs, they are placing crown and British billionaire money on long standing European cultural heritage. How shameful it is, that our lower middle-income country has to go rubbing shoulders with Western billionaires and Royalty. My God, such is the travesty of justice towards the suffering Lankans; such is the megalomania of our Lankan elite.

        leelagemalli ,

        ” Chandrika , Mahinda , Sirisena-Ranil , Goyabaya.”

Out of all five , Gotabaya is the first outsider to Srilankan politics . We
have plenty of time to talk about his coming to politics. Sirisena was
in our local language a ‘ Parachute” to Presidency . Chandrika and
Mahinda used Family Politics to rise up and so is , in a way , Ranil . But
then in my thinking , Ranil is the most talented and suitable man to
lead the country out of the five , in every sense . Why then it didn’t
materialise ? Because he was so unpopular among voters as a leader .
That is the shortest answer we can have . Why so ? Well , it could be
a never ending story ! Ranil’s worst and disgusting strategy was to
force his leadership to the people by hook or crook ! Hence , the Sira
Drama which failed miserably and paved the way for a Mahinda
comeback with the same game plans with mixed new and old faces .
This Ranil factor is surely a cancer if not removed from the body
sooner . However talented he is , if people don’t want him , he must
step aside at least until his worth is felt by the people or forever !
We all forget that there’s a ” dog in the manger ” in Ranil . I like his
political mastery but if it is not demanded , then that is it .

Dear LM; I was about to give that link and you did it well in time. Thanks.

Now is the time again to take our memories to that “LOSS OF ROYAL SWARD” from the S/L Museum during GR’s tenure of office as the Defense Secretary. Several “Suspects” were arrested and waiting for trial. Among the suspects was an “Eye Witness” who was to give evidence on the “Lost Royal Sward”. Now take back your memories of the “Prison Riots” that broke out and how “GR” sent a “Death Squad” and “CALL OUT” the names of remanded prisoners and shot them dead. Among the “Killed” was this “Eye Witness”.

Any connection to “Pacific Commodities” that “31 Arts and Arts Pieces” that have been stored in “Geneva Freeport”? This company belongs to “Thiru Nadesan” – the husband of Nurupama- the “NICE” of “GR”. Now, it would very interesting to find whether that “Royal Sward” “LOST” from S/L Museum is among the “Art Pieces”? There are very many “DOTS” in this “Roberry” (Ali Baba & Forty Thieves) to connect and make the “TRUE” picture. It will emerge soon.

      davidthegood,

The only reason we need a shady, China-friendly, Western-unfriendly Port City in the first place – one that will handle laundered money via Cryptocurrency, is because these Lankan Monopolists take the money of the struggling masses who work for them, and place it on Investments out of the country, to make more money for themselves, and those they are affiliated to.

If that money was handled like other advanced countries are doing (e.g. America cut out its Monopolists of the 1800’s and early 1990’s), the money would flow for country prosperity. Workers would get paid better and won’t need to slave in the Middle East so as to survive the ever-escalating cost of living in the Motherland. Tea-estate workers who bring in billions to the country would get some decent living quarters.

At least the American monopolies created something for the rest of the world to purchase. Lankan monopolies use the labor of the Lankan worker to amass wealth or themselves and those they are affiliated to. There are little laws in place to ensure the rights of the citizens monetary value. The judiciary is stifled and ineffectual.

All good questions for which there will either be no answers, or evasive answers.

We have corruption at the HIGHEST LEVELS in this country, the tone has been set at the top, and the families and cronies of our President and Prime Minister, have fleeced us as we are struggling as a country. I guess their supporters will as usual point to crooked leaders in other countries to justify these crimes, and life will continue for Sri Lankans, while it is the common man who has to struggle, starve, stand in long lines, handle the shortages, while these crooks live the good life, and enjoy their ill gotten gains here and abroad.
You can be sure money has been laundered, stashed in tax free havens, houses and properties have been illegally bought in other countries, including the US, UK, and even Dubai, and while this country falls, these crooks will get away with all crimes, and the Aiyah’s and Malli’s and their families would have amassed Billions of Rupees, enough to last for the next few generations. The Rajapaksas will solidify their power, and we will have no brace ourselves and be prepared to live in a monarchy like North Korea.

Since corruption is endemic in the Sri Lankan psyche, people with no opportunity to be corrupt can only complain with jealousy. How is that for a point of view?

    1) My urging then CBSL Governor Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy to determine LEGITIMACY of offshore accounts in tax havens held by Sri Lankans named in the Panama Papers, which included his erstwhile colleague Krishan Balendra on the director board of JKH fell on deaf ears.

    2) Coomaraswamy had the audacity to cite the new Foreign Exchange Act No. 12 of 2017 introduced by the Yahapalana government to JUSTIFY INACTION:

    3) “The time period prescribed by the Foreign Exchange Act No. 12 of 2017 to conclude investigations under ECA expired on 19.05.2018 as stipulated in the Foreign Exchange Act No 12 of 2017. These investigations also lapsed on that date.”

It is the party system that corrupts even the best-intentioned. Eran may have had good intentions initially, but the political party system which demands solidarity to safeguard the crooks within it, corrupts, and forces all to toe the line. The time Eran joined UNP, Ranil had a reasonably good reputation which he lost the day he went to see MR at TT with Nadesan and then mollycoddled the Rajapakses by letting them off the legal hooks.
Eran & Harsha were not made of sterner stuff but went along.

You are.not an alien to not know what out governments are capable of, so try something different. Didn’t you bring the same case of crook Mahindananda BS that world cup was fixed. Until recently the Hindian South Block was napping or you could say exercising masterly inactivity.

Now it appears they are onto some short term policy implementation (whatever that maybe) as you see Harsh Vardhan Shringla the Foreign Secretary of Hindia visited North and East during his 4 day fact finding/domestic policy implementation tour.

              Why?
              Why now?

Foreign Secretary Shringla visited iconic Jaffna Cultural Centre (which is built with Indian grant assistance).

Is it a warning to soman and his fellow arsonists to keep out of Delhi’s own district in Jaffna.

Let us be all honest to ourselves first! Didn’t we know that who was fronting Rajapakse family loot? Didn’t we all know that Thiru Nadesan was the go-between, even on the day Mahinda lost his presidential election, it was Thiru who took Ranil to Mahinda and Gota to strike a deal? We knew all this for such a long time and we are now pretending that we are shocked. We all know to whom or to which family this money belongs to.

This is only the top whats at the bottom of the ocean is not out yet. All the suitcase loads of money that went and going to the family in Sri Lankan Rupees are held in SL and used by them to buy assets in various names in SL and also to buy monkey politicians such as the SLMC monkeys who crossed over and voted for 20A including the leader of the party who gave the OK.

Yes RR was locked up but Nagananda K who accused a judge directly was debarred for 3 years by that judge’s brother judges on the Bench.
Unfortunately we cannot appeal to an independent higher court like the “Lords”.

AKD, referred to the significance of that, and of Vasudeva and Wiggy being in-laws.
      .
I didn’t think that I would have pounced on those two instances, but Anura Kumara rightly did.
      .
All Lankans must have seen and heard how effectively AKD spoke about it: softly, with a gentle, sarcastic smile, letting the facts speak for themselves. Simon, this is the sort of thing that is understood in the “kada-mandiyas” of both Bandarawela and Unawatuna, isn’t it?
      .

It looks as though this boy is being rude to the Sultan, but it is tolerated from an Omani citizen:
      .
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8O0ZRmQnVo
      .
“Mercenaries” like me wouldn’t have been allowed by other Omanis to behave like that! But we were well-treated, and the average Omani was always polite – and hospitable. I was the only non-Arabic-speaking teacher in my school. All teachers were regularly invited to partake of full meals, and almost daily tor “khawwa” (coffee) and “thamaar” (dates). Which is how I got hepatitis in 1990 in Bandarawela, another Morri teacher got it in Cairo, and a third in Marrakesh (Morocco).

          .
I’m sure that you’re right, but what I submit tonight is what I will be sure of.
          .
We loved Qaboos when we were there, but we were there to provide a service – in my case to teach English. It was not my business to hob-nob with the Sultan.

To my knowledge Lanka has always been a corrupted country and JR’s open economy not only made it worse but normalized. Ministers who played out then are now remembered as saints. What was just a wound became a ulcer and now a gangrene. Our treasury is now shifted to various shell companies around world and the country is running on borrowed loans. Politicians are not done yet because they want to liquidate left over assets and take that too. Retards still keep fighting for an empty coffer and land which may be loaned soon.

Here is yet another Rajapaksa money making food scam. See former CAA executive director interview published in Daily Mirror. A stagnant consignment of 56,000 kilos of garlic worth 135 Rs/Kilo was released by Minister Bandula . G to Sathosa. Instead of direct public distribution they in turn sold to private party which re- sold, back to Sathosa for >400 Rs/Kilo for public consumption. This came to light only because of the raid conducted by CAA director who obviously had to quit after raid. Calculate the loot on just one consignment. This has been the case before with sugar and dhal , but the books are immediately destroyed/deleted so that no paper trail is left behind. With all the restrictions private parties which had been buying and releasing essential food items for a profit are now made defunct, where as Rajapaksas have found a way to make the profit amid bankruptcy by getting control over the whole distribution of essential food items under their control. This is exactly I said before “Rajapaksas are mother of all crooks ,who could exploit any adversity.

    • 12
      0

This food scam explains the whole Rajapaksa BS. 1) Truth is no one except Rajapaksas were hoarding using the ports,( under pretext of foreign currency restriction) and MR comes out like a savior ordering to release all stagnant food consignment to Sathosa for public distribution. Now we know how they make money in each consignment using Sathosa. 2) Being aware of this scam, Local rice mill owners decided to protect their profits by refusing to release the rice to govt at a lower price. 3) When Rajapaksas tried pull a fast one by threatening to import rice from Pakistan, mill owners called it a bluff. 4) From now, Rajapaksa mafia will have total control on food distribution instead of usual private businesses(like Maharaja), middle man and distributors. 4) Now that due to cash crunch, there is no infrastructure or other mega projects Rajapaksas are improvising ways to make their regular illegal income.

      • 11
        0

The tragicomedy in this saga is when MR ordered releasing all stagnant essential goods out of port ( news is that billions worth of goods including that belongs to private agencies are now under Rajapaksa possession ,hoarded in port warehouses, due to forex restrictions) from Italy having a sumptuous meal, public that the Messiah has arrived to save them from starvation, the shelves will be stacked full for consumption, they sure did not realize the Salusala is selling it for 400 % profit to Rajapaksa cronies.

Why did MaRa choose Nadesan to accompany Ranil W. in the wee-hours of the morning on that fateful day in 2015 after his defeat?
    TRUST AND LOYALTY.

Was it not because of this Trust that Nadesan was the defacto Chancellor of the Exchequer for the Rajapakse loot? Besides being a Tamil, married into the family chances of betrayal would be remote.

The Rajapakses are shrewd and astute when it comes to Politics; But when it comes to finances you need a Brain .Nadesan has that crooked brain!

Nirupama had her name on the electoral list as Nirupama Rajapakse and not as Nirupama Nadesan.

Plato, today Nadesan claimed absolute innocence (he and his wife)??? Where as Rajapaksas not only claimed innocence but said Nirupama is ignorant of Nadesan’s business activities(first sign of willing to dump). Gotha on his part gave presidential orders for immediate inquiry ??? Next will be Rajapaksa’s commission all inclusively paid by tax payers, appointed to investigate how taxpayer’s money was swindled by very own Rajapaksas. I guess if Jaliya was not in U.S, his wife would have faced inquiry.

Namal, went a step further trying to outsmart those senior Rajapaksas by disowning Nirupama altogether saying ” family sentiments and family politics are different and should not be confused as one, she is not one among us (politics) and we are no way accountable for the wealth amazed by Nadesan. As I said, this fool desperately wants to standout and be noticed but end up making silly laughable statements.

Pandora Papers is just the tip of the iceberg and what came out, as proof. It’s just the small potatoes given to the cousins. If that’s $160 million, just imagine the main loot that the big-boss has taken.

When people in Sri Lanka are suffering and dying from COVID and the economic crisis, reading about this looting makes me sick to the stomach. How could any human do this to vast majority of people. But our stupid people will continue to elect them and put them on a pedestal.

In a way, Sri Lankan people deserve the suffering they are going through. It is sad but the lack of principles, the shortsightedness and the self-centeredness of our people is what brought about our demise. Our great “sistachaaraya” and our proud history, unfortunately has led to this. Sad…

What is the big story here ? where is the proof this 160 mil or how even they have is ill gotten? through government or other political means. Is there a law in Sri Lanka that people cannot be rich ? if so that is probably why this country can never develop. We may as well let the JVP murders take over and make this a khmer rouge?

If you look at the rich everywhere in the world they use shell companies to protect themselves and their assets from litigation. This is nothing new. what really is the issue here? where is there any proof this money is tax payer funded? Seems like a whole lot baloney to me.

      a14455,
      You are telling:
You can read and got to know that a distant cousin of the ruling family married a rich man.
      On you own, you know:
JVP are murderers. Khmer Rouge are worse. The rich, world over, use shell companies to shield themselves.
At the same time, you want me to believe that you are asking because you don’t know.
Also, while telling that you don’t know, you are declaring that the whole lot is baloney!
      I am dumbfounded.

Avoiding tax is absolutely legal whereas evading is not. But amazing illegal wealth is now an international crime. That is the reason countries are able to freeze such assets. Nadesan was already taken into custody for corruption charges but now free and continuing because he is a Rajapaksa family member and not just his, but all Rajapaksa members cases have been closed. All he needs to do is show his legal income which are appropriate to questionable assets to clear his name. Also whether income is made through illegal means ?? In Lanka every thing including crime , murder and torture are normalized by Rajapaksas and people who elect them.

      A14455,
No, there is no law against getting rich. But there are laws against avoiding taxes, which is the purpose of these offshore investments.
Of course there is a lot of baloney. But don’t you wonder why a person who is so religious needs so much money?

      Dear a14455,
      .
      I’ve “liked” your comment
; you are asking questions for the best possible reason: you want to learn.
      .
In PART ONE, I’m responding to the questions.
      .
Nirupama is the grand-daughter of Don Mathew Rajapaksa, the first in that family to enter the legislature. Her father (first cousin to the Quadrupaksas who now “reign”, reducing many to starvation) was former Minister, the late George Rajapaksa.
      .
A relative of mine, obsessed with genealogies, tells me that DMR’s progeny were much better educated than DAR’s, because the former moved to Colombo owing to that well-documented story about how the wealthy R.A.de Mel (of Duplication Road, fame) got himself elected cricket captain of Richmond. (Please ask for details if not understood). My informant is very precise, and doesn’t usually brook further questioning by me; as evidence of the low expectations of DAR’s kids he alluded to Chamal being happy to be recruited as a Police Constable, then said, “you see how low their expectations then were.” He would have been recruited Post-1960.
      .
Most of this information is available on usually reliable Wikipedia. However, it says that Chamal was recruited as a sub-inspector; that is probably how he retired.

Pandora and Panama are just the tip of a an iceberg. Thete are millions of such off shore shel companies and accounts around world and Lankan PC dosen’t want to be left out. It has come to light few Indian’s have started companies to buy assets or even to built their own mansion. Reason legally
they cant because it’s black. It’s that simple. Businessman who claimed bankruptcy, owing money to hundreds of bank and investors are now found to have diverted and hidden Billions elsewhere.

As I guessed most of the Panditayas here have no clue about what they are talking about. Not one of you showed or knew if the money they have stored in some overseas bank is legally or illegally obtained in Sri Lanka or overseas.

By the law of the country dual citizens who earn income outside Sri Lanka are not subject to her tax codes.
apparently, they were doing real estate business in UK and Australia. So you can assume quite a bit of the income came from there.

And then our OC asks “But don’t you wonder why a person who is so religious needs so much money?”

The answer is up to them don’t you think? What does being religious have to do with how much money you have? and what you choose to do with it.

and our SM(Cinkala maan ) tells me Basil Rajapaksa was in Sub IP . “wow !” That was not the question I asked Mr Single brain cell .

Dear Readers and Commentators: Do you wish to see a “Pandora Box” being opened in Parliament on 8-10-21? Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OXYaOU_Yps

Please note this is part opening of a “Pandora Box” and not “Pandora Papers”. Listen to what happened to “Gin Ganga Project” money and how it was “Siphoned” off without even turning a sod of earth.

Correction: In my above comment, it is mistakenly stated as “Gin Ganga Project”. It is the “Nilwala Project”
