Parasite Identification Parade – A Christmas Quiz

By Austin I Pullé

Austin I Pullé

As an eventful year draws to a close with the lawyers of the various kennel clubs scratching their heads to come up with a clearer definition of “dog lover” in the application forms, a South Korean official lecturing a state minister on the need for punctuality, a trait disdained by the Bandit Queen, and the unsolved killing of a respected businessman, Sri Lankans are forced yet again to confront the bestial character of their society and to identify the parasites that suck the life out of the people.

Both repelled and fascinated by the gruesome illustrations in Judy Diamond’s and Gabor Racz’s book, “Parasites”, this writer borrowed it from the public library. The observation by these authors that “parasitism is a lifestyle” seemed like a good description for what goes on in public life in the Wonder of Asia. As a character in one of the Roman comedies observes,”Like rats we always eat other people’s food.” Sounds familiar? Even among  their friends but especially among public figures, average Sri Lankans encounter freeloaders, spongers, scroungers, groupies and hagiographers rewarded with public appointments, one and all parasites. So have parasites made a species jump? Matching a person or a class to the specific parasite is the challenge of the quiz.

A – Cymothoa Exigua: a parasite that destroys fishes’ tongues, then living in the fish’s mouth, performing the tongue’s job while gorging itself.

(Finalists:  i – the President and his Prevention of Terrorism Act, host the Sri Lankan people; ii – Parliamentarians, host the Sri Lankan people, iii – The Rajapaksa clan, the host their fervent supporters).

B – The fungus Ophiocordyceps Unilateralists infects ants and manipulate their behavior so as to benefit fungus grown and transmission. The ants taken over by the fungus  are called zombie ants. They are compelled to climb to a high point of foliage and attach themselves until they die.

(Finalists: ii – Extremist Clergy, host the credulous devout; and ii – The Racist Twins, the former Northern Chief Minister and the Hate Speech Admiral, hosts the Genocide claimants and the Sinha Le community, respectively)

C – Tomoplasma gondii  – carried by cats to form brain abscesses.

(Finalists: i – JVP, host student unions; ii – Extremist clergy of all types, host their congregations)

D – Ascaris Lumbricoides – causes tropical disease ascariasis with symptoms fever, vomiting and weight loss. I – Sathosa Lords host, the consumers; ii – Tuition Teachers: host free education students)

E – Trypanosoma brucei – causes sleeping sickness and overwhelms the central nervous system.

(Finalists: i – Ministry of Public administration – host government employees; ii – GMOA.  the host hapless patients.)

F – The Nematode Tapeworm – High degree of adaptability with differing lengths from a millimetre to over a hundred feet in Blue whales. Many have suckers that attach to the bowel of the hosts.

(Finalists: i – Parliamentary pole vaulters, host their constituency; ii – the Armed Forces. the host people desperately needing medicines and education.)

In an essay in the New York Times about Charles Dickens and the Christmas Carol tale, Maureen Dowd writes: “The disparity between the circumstances and fates of different people offended Dickens in the Christmas season. For him, it was a time to think about what we owe one another, how we live with one another; a time to have a proper sense of outrage about inequality and injustice, and to think about the past, present and future and how much they have to do with each other; a time to consider the good values we’ve thrown away and the bad values — selfishness, egotism, social snobbery, condescension and the worship of money — that infiltrate the heart.”

Food for thought but not for the parasites. The parasites will never let go but it’s time for the hosts to purge themselves of these freeloaders that have infiltrated the hearts and minds of the Sri Lankan people.

The unsolved killing of a respected businessman doesn’t disturb me. It WILL be solved. What disturbs me is the unresolved murder of Waseem Thajudeen and of Lasantha Wickrematunge.

… a South Korean official lecturing a state minister on the need for punctuality.
And yet, the state minister is still remaining in his post. Where is his boss?

South Korean Delegation leader wasn’t well conversant in English to understand the intricacies of the contents!!! The time 9:00 am was to be for journalist minions to be in attendance, so they are in their places and “stand up” and greet the Haughty and Mighty Politicians to enter the venue!!??
So the Adi Karu Minister himself has declared that he abided by the time specified in the invitation and further confirmed, “THAT HE WOULD ENSURE THAT IN FUTURE OR GOING FORWARD, THER WOULD BE ABSOLUTE CONFORMITY TO TIMING AS SCHEDULED IN THE PLAN”!!??
If the Ministerial delegation was on schedule, then what’s the purpose of reconfirming that they would endeavour to conform and keep to scheduled times in future!!!?? Mind boggling!! Is he ministerial material or even a basic lawmaker!!! 6.9 million wise-men/women of Sri Lanka, please think!!??
Is this an exposition of High level of Cunningness mistaken for High level of Intelligence!!??

This is again mlechcha media’s big show not having studied the facts exactly.
        .
This country is totally misled by MEDIA brothels than any other country in that region. By day it is worsening. If SIRASA or the highly punishable TV channels were not there, RAJAPAKSHES woudl not have ruined this country to this much of appalling levels.

Daily mirror is no longer respectable media entity.

In that aforementioned meeting, Minister had been humble enough to share the truth what had been occured in that meeting. In fact, he had turned up shortly before 9.30 to allow meeting happening, For some technical reasons, they had taken another few minutes but within acceptable levels. We also have sometime, such delays, in europe, if our technical assistants would not turn up timely. That should be mixed up with general behaviours of our south asian culture.

          Dear Mr Austin Pullé,
          .
          1/?

          .
You have said this: “The parasites will never let go but it’s time for the hosts to purge themselves of these freeloaders.”
          .
Don’t you think that this is getting pretty complicated? I’ve been enjoying your articles, but I haven’t really been commenting on them. This is mainly because I can’t really distance myself sufficiently from depressing day to day problems. See what happens to quality articles on CT.

I have already submitted two comments there, and quite a few below Dr Ameer Ali’s article. And now we have this coward, “leelagemalli”, trying to tell me what I should write about Ameer’s article. No, I will not complain to the editor, but I’m telling you that now we are dealing with a different sort of parasite.
          .
“leelagemalli” hates his fellow Sinhalese so much that he contacted me almost exactly two years ago. He had succeeded in finding my email address, and has, since then, sent me around two thousand emails. I haven’t counted them manually, but they get collected as “conversations”. There are over 800 of them, and since each conversation contains on average about three emails I have computed them to be about 2,000 emails – all in two years!

        Dr Ameer Ali’s article.
        .
The Minister, Pasqual, is a guy elected from the SLPP, and I don’t like that Rajapaksa Party.
        .
However, such a prejudice on my part ought not to influence me when an incident like this is shown. My comment below the Ameer Ali article has already appeared. We have to be more objective.
        .
Yes, this is a misunderstanding; go on the body language.Pasqual’s version must be correct; the Korean has over-reacted, even if there really was a half hour delay.
        .
Mahila, there is overkill by the Minister promising no delay in future when there was no need to be submissive. Nathan, a half hour delay isn’t really a “sacking-offence”, is it?

          Dear Readers,
          .
Pandit, Sinhala man does not see the point here. To me, firstly, It is wrong to base Dr. Ali’s latest article on false information,
Secondly, if anyone commends it are also wrong.
If writing an article, the writer must first find his information. Dr. Ali seems to have responded in a manner that all irresponsible media have imitated.

          Is this not irresponsible ?
          .
Why doesn’t Pundit Sinhala Man call it a “brilliant article” this time?

      Nathan,

This was a common statement on that day and in that meeting. And it was confirmed that the meeting started on time. So read my comments about this, I have posted two eye-opening videos for those who are a littlle more serious.

      The minister should not resign.

I don’t know what party he belongs to, however, he seems to be a legit guy.
      .
Everyone else including the writer here is being misled by fake news.

I questioned why our Bandarawela teacher did not call it “a brilliant Article Dr. Ali”. ?????
I have been raising this terrible mafia nature of srilanken media (the brutality of our hellish mainstream media) for the past 5 years, but even the CT commenters didn’t care. Instead, they are very much interested in “ludicrous bold texts” being posted by aforementioned teacher.

I wanted to point out to you CT readers that almost everyone can be misled by media misrepresentations about Sri Lanka.
