Port City Project To Resume: SL Ambassador To China

It has now transpired that our ambassadors are above the law of the land, the president and the Prime Minister. In a recent newspaper report, our high flying ambassador to China, a certain Mr.Kodithuwkku, seems to have the the authority to announce that ‘The green light has been given to the delayed Colombo Port City project’, before the legal EIA and commentary process has been concluded, but also seems to have the power to pardon a Chinese company for violating the laws of Sri Lanka. The Company, in collusion with those entrusted with the protection of our coast, has apparently submitted a ‘greater environmental impact assessment’, not because it is required by law but according to the ambassador but ’to allay public concern’. It will be very nice if our ambassador showed some respect for the ‘public concern’ that has been published in the media for some time now. Now that he knows so much, perhaps he can allay our fears on the impact on the air quality, freshwater availability, climate change responsibilities and garbage disposal ability and allay our concerns.

port cityThe press report goes on to state that “The “incremental environmental impact” by the project is “minimal/negligible at the reclamation site and the coastal zone to the North and South of the site,” This is a patently false statement and totally disrespectful of the fact that there has been no statement on the impact of construction dust and debris on the city of Colombo amongst other critical impacts. The effect might be minimal at the reclamation site, but what about the impact on the rest of the nation, starting with the environs of Colombo. The authors of the “incremental environmental impact” must reside in other nations, as they seem to have been unaware that a city called Colombo exists, just outside their ‘area of reclamation’. It is rumored that the CCD who had been part of the original document was now the evaluators for their own document. Well, someone should tell these gentlemen to lift their heads out of their boxes and see that a city called Colombo exists beyond their reclamation site and that they, as an organ of the Sri Lankan Government have a duty by its people to protect them. In this case it looks like a rapid protection game for the Chinese investor.

Our dear ambassador is clearly out of line, in the statements he made, will the Government rebuke these fallacious public statements? Will he respect due process and the law of this land? Or is he, like the owner of a media with whom I was speaking to last night, amused that I was attempting to protect Sri Lanka, when there was business profit to be made! Amusement with those wanting their fundamental rights expressed, reeks of Mary Antoinette, who was amused by the starving asking for bread that she told them “to eat cake’ instead.

Is this the Government and society that we have?

    Beautiful project. looks classy.

This should rival what they have made in Dubai and Doha though this is much smaller in scale. Coupled with Western Region Megapolis Project will change the landscape of Colombo.

I hope this project will bring in lot of additional investment and leading companies to setup business creating more high paying jobs.

Talking about damage to environment there are 100’s other environment catastrophes in Sri Lanka created by Sri Lankans.

Embrace it.It is there to stay ! now that the corruption part is taken over. All hell breaks out about environment after MARA is gone?

Though I suggest changing of the name from “Port City” to something else ?

why not some sort of an extension of Colombo or Gall face green ?

CT Editors we need your help. Please help the citizens and youth of COlombo to launch a people’s power campaign against the Chinese port city/ environmental and financial disaster/ corruption ridden/ white elephant project?!

Residents and citizens of Colombo need to launch a MASSIVE PEOPLE’S POWER PROTEST CAMPAIGN if the corrupt clown Ravi K and Ranil Wickramasinghe together with Sirisena have agreed to the Mahinda Jarapassa bribe filled Chinese Port city which is going to be a Huge environmental disaster.

This Chinese Port city if it goes ahead will show the bi-partisan nature of political corruption that spans the SLFP and UNP leaders. Pathala Champika Mega, ego mega city man who wants to be the Buddhist Dictator of Lanka is also silent on this financial and environmental crime that is to be committed by the Chinese in the name of their Silk route which is a BIG JOKE!

      Afzal;-

Do you live in Dubai or Doha, or have you visited them as a Tourist?

“I hope this project will bring in lot of additional investment and leading companies to setup business creating more high paying jobs.”

Why must this investment be in Colombo, a City whose Infrastructure is already unable to cope with Drainage and Traffic Problems due to Overpopulation?

Isn’t it better to invite Experts in Environmental Matters to Investigate other areas for Development.

If Mr senanayake was living in Dubai.that city would never have been built because of the fear of cement debris.

Are slums better they do not cause cement debris.

Of all the stupid statements given as why we should not do it this is the worst.

Norochacolai Power power plant should not be built because of the coal dust and the acid rain?

Kandalama hotel should not be built because it will drain the tank for water used by the hotel

    Get a life Mr senanayake

Thank you Mr. Senanayake for your great work – please keep it up!

Some people think that Lanka can turn into Dubai – what a joke- with Climate change and accelerated Sea level rise, coastal erosion, and global financial downturn this is simply not the right time or place for another Chinese White Elephant which will be a Trojen Horse and sink the national economy and devastate the environment of Colombo. Already the Sri Lanka economy is in a DEBT TRAP because of the Hambantota Chinese White Elephant port and air port – De-development project.

Please ignore these ignorant clowns, Anura Mendis and Afzal who are paid by corrupt crooks and taken in by SPIN and glossy advertisements of the Chinese white elephant company re. a mythical Colombo port city for a Chinese silk route which is really to militarize Indian Ocean, which paid the bribes to Mahinda Jarapassa for the Hambantota Port and airport which are one of the reasons for the massive national debt and crashing economy.

    Nice one, Ranil.

It’s about time someone in authority informs the public just what the hell is going on with this project. All we get are the occasional news releases, many of them contradictory, and nothing from the GOSL!

    What a farce!

Please have a look at the U-Tube video ‘Dubai Sewage Trucks’ to see what will happen in Colombo if this project goes through.

Colombo would not be able to handle the Sewage and Garbage, as well as the additional Vehicles, required by the Port City Development.
