The reason for suppressing details regarding the disappearance of Prageeth Ekneligoda prior to the August 2015 Parliamentary elections is that the Criminal Investigation Department had already questioned Ekneligoda’s mistress and the Maithripala Sirisena – Ranil Wickremesinghe led government felt that it may have been counter productive to their election drive, an officer investigating the disappearance of Ekneligoda told Colombo Telegraph.
Also during that period prior to the elections Ekneligoda’s wife Sandya Ekneligoda held a press conference and claimed that information pertaining to the disappearance of her husband had not been released to the public.

In response to Sandya’s claims the police spokesman making a counter statement said that the CID cannot reveal all the information in their possession as the investigation was still in progress.
In the run up to the August general elections the anti-Rajapaksa camp used Sandya Ekneligoda the wife of Prageeth as an icon in their campaign of disappeared persons.
However in a dramatic change in the CID’s investigation into the disappearance of Prageeth Ekenligoda, it is reported that Ekneligoda’s mistress and the former Minister Douglas Devananda‘s media secretary Nelson Edirisinghe are to be brought in soon to be questioned formally. Previously the duo had been questioned by the CID and information was gathered in informally.
The CID has found evidence that Ekneligoda had not lived with his wife but with another woman in Matale.
Whenever Ekneligoda was in Colombo he had lived at the residence of Edirisinghe and not with his wife Sandya.
The CID has also established facts that whenever Ekneligoda was out of Colombo he frequently made his first call to Edirisinghe and on several occasions his second call was made thereafter to Douglas Devananda.
Prageeth Ekenligoda was first abducted exactly 6 years ago today, the 27th August 2009 and was released following morning.
He was abducted a second time the day prior to the 2010 January Presidential elections and has been missing since.
The CID is trying to establish the facts pertaining to both his first and second abductions that has now led to his permanent disappearance. It was wildly known that on or about the time of his second abduction he is alleged to have penned a jungle paper to support General Sarath Fonseka in his 2010 Presidential election campaign. The document was type set and Prageeth checked the proofs as well. Moreover his handwriting was also visible in some sections of the document. But this still did not explain why Prageeth was abducted the first time, then there was no such document and the Fonseka election campaign had yet to kick off. Moreover the Presidential election itself was yet to be announced.
Four army personnel were arrested by the CID three days ago in connection with the disappearance of Eknaligoda, Police said two lieutenant colonels, a staff sergeant and a corporal were among the arrested.
The CID also found that couple of days after Prageeth’s final disappearance, Kelly Senanayake and Ekneligoda’s wife Sandya had on suspicion visited Prageth’s Matale Mistress’ house suspecting that he was hiding there. According to our source, the mistress confirmed this visit.

To having a Mistress to many married men in the country has become a new culture today. They hold spare wives as it is legally allowed. They criticise about western cultures but today the social structure that is being introduced to average lankens seem to be much worse actually.
I think those who hold mistressess sometimes producing illegal offsprings of them should be focused the hard actions from the govt side. I personally know there are men that would make children not caring laws prevailing in the country. Law and order should be in action in those cases, then only the next genreations would learn it right. TOday, having no law applciations even if hard crimes would have been committed – the new ones are on a process of taking them no serious.
I now see that Ekanaligoda or any missing ones and their cases to sweep even deeper should have been connected with their behaviours while being in their married lives. However, all these should be subjected to investigations and have them clear

I have mixed feelings towards this mans fate since I read Eknaligoda the disspaeared also had a mistress. Any kind of penis controlled men should be double hit by the law of a state is my feeling. Following the elections , Mahinda has met president Maithripala and made one request – that is to halt the Ekneliyagoda murder investigation . It is now very clear that Mahinda (who was behind these crimes) is in mortal fear that he, and Gotabaya who gave orders would be exposed, following the recent arrest and detention of the army officers in this connection. Hence Mahinda had sought to instigate Maithripala to make this most despicable deplorable step and halt the investigation.
Even after president Maithripala has duly rejected this request , it is reported that the present defense secretary B.M.U.D. Basnayake another shameless lickspittle and lackey of the criminal Rajapakses is making sly and illegal moves to rescue and safeguard the ruthless brutal Rajapakses , it is learnt.

Believe it or not , the defense secretary Basnayake even at this moment has not signed the order to grant permission to the CID to continue with the detention of the four army officers (suspects) namely ,Lieutenant Colonels Shammi Kumararatne and Siriwardena, staff sergeant Rajapakse and Corporal in charge Jayalath of the Giritale camp at that time , who abducted and murdered Ekneliyagoda. Mind you ,while it is the defense secretary of the country who should take the initiative in these investigations , it is a cruel irony Basnayake our own defense secretary is acting like an accomplice in the crimes trying to save the culprits .
It is to be noted with concern that if the detention order is not extended in respect of the four suspects who were arrested on the 24 th , it will eventuate in the release of the culprits without completing the questioning.
Ordinarily under the laws, a suspect can be detained only for 72 hours .Thereafter he must be produced before a court. But as these suspects are army officers involved in conspiracy , abduction , torture and murder of citizens of the country , and those offences fall into the category of heinous crimes , and as giving authority to acts of terrorism , these suspects can be held in custody for 90 days , and investigated under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA). This in other words is to enable the investigators to track down the masterminds at the bottom and behind these conspiracies and crimes.
Basnayake profusely lies
Basnayake instead of performing his duties duly as a defense secretary , has acted like an accomplice in these crimes by going out of the way to justify the criminal actions while uttering all the sinister lies .To a prominent journalist who questioned him yesterday (26) evening on this , Basnayake uttered a blatant lie brazenly that he is being pressurized . When he was asked who that was , he said, a patriotic party leader linked to the UNF and a former powerful minister gave three calls to him and urged him to get the army suspects released . But when Lanka e news delved into this , it was discovered it is another stinking lie turned out from Basnayake’s lie factory .
Not only president Maithripala , even the army commander revealed openly at a media briefing yesterday (their secret moves to the contrary notwithstanding ) that the army ought not hamper the Ekneliyagoda murder investigation, and because the investigations are under way , nothing further can be disclosed.
According to reports reaching Lanka e news, the attorney general (AG) too in his recommendations to Basnayake has said , the suspects can be detained under the PTA.
In the circumstances , Basnayake must without playing the role of an anti national villain and culprit must reveal to the people why he is holding back without signing the detention order. If Basnayake who secured his appointment from a government that won by marching proudly over the dead bodies of Ekneliyagoda and countless many law abiding citizens is still trying his sordid pranks to camouflage the Ekneliyagoda murder ,it is doubtless he is provoking the entire nation and uniting the people against him . When this present defense secretary made a statement to exonerate ex defense secretary Gotabaya Rajapakse of charges against him of holding back many millions of rupees of the treasury that are due to the treasury , even a former president of the country Chandrika Bandaranaike said in public , Basnayake is not suitable for the post , and is a one sided pro Rajapakse regime shameless bootlicking official .

The fact that he had extra marital affairs, or that he sent Ashes to the Rajapaskes, or that he had connections with fake LTTE doesn’t justifies government sponsored extra judicial killing of a journalist. If Prageeth had done something illegal, they should have tried him under the existing judicial systems openly. It is highly unlikely that they has something even remotely legal and solid on him given the fact until recently the judiciary was stuck in the clamps of the MARA regime. Top to bottom from CJ to lower circuit courts the judges were their agents/pals[ and they could have gotten a favorable decision to make Prageeth accountable. So why killing in cold blood. The fact whether he had a mistress is his wife’s problem. Better to cover the Farmer’s crisis in the agricultural heartlands of Lanka where a bumper paddy harvest is rotting and farmers desperate because their crop is not being purchased as promised by state authorities because all attention is focused on the Political Dog fight for Cabinet posts in this Miracle of Modayas!

This statement is objectionable, as it is not referring to any specific period. I have known Prageeth since 1992 and visited many of his rented residences in Colombo throughout the years. Ever since I have known Prageeth, he was living with Sandya and kids. He went missing when they lived in Pannipitiya in 2010. I visited their Pannipitiya residence in late 2008 as well, I’ve been to many Christmas and New Year feasts wherever they lived and that is in addition to usual visits. Due to my accident, couldn’t visit them in the last year prior to Prageeth’s disappearance. However, even my ex-husband was at Prageeth’s Pannipitiya residence for a few months during the same period and whenever I called their plc Sandya, Prageeth or the kids answered the land-phone. Prageeth may have had other relationships as stated in this news (a news to me too!) but I am just wondering at which point Prageeth was not living with Sandya in Colombo?!
Needless to say that unless and until substantiated by the CID and/or CT, the statement appears to be derogatory.

What are we interested in this case of “Missing Eknaligoda – the Journalist” (1) Where is Ekneligoda? (2) Is he living or dead? (3) If he is “living”, can we find him? (4) If he is “dead”, how did he die? (4) If his death is “suspicious”, who is responsible? (5) If the death was a “murder” who is responsible?. We, including his family, are waiting for answers to these questions. So far five persons have been “detained” and as per the submissions to courts, investigations are continuing. So what are these speculations over “Mistresses” and “Kussi Amma” (kitchen gossip)stories? In this type of case, it is no surprise that there are various parties who will try to “subvert” and “disrupt” the on going inquiries definitely with ulterior motives. These “parties” can come forward under “fictitious” identities and also remain “undercover”. That is what I believe, Journalists have to be careful and take extra precaution to verify and make reports, so that the public will not be “distracted” from the main investigations centered on finding the answers that the family and the public are seeking.
