Prelates Loosen Condemned Provocateur

By Ameer Ali

Dr. Ameer Ali

Prisoner Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera, a social miscreant and public provocateur in saffron robes, who was condemned by a Colombo High Court Magistrate to four years rigorous imprisonment with an additional fine of 100,000 rupees, had been released on bail after intense pressure from Buddhist prelates and the Sinhala Buddhist supremacist organization Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) whose Secretary General happens to be this notorious prisoner. His release is the latest victory for political Buddhism, a deviant creed drawn up by a group of Buddhist monks, which in course of time became a vote winner in almost every election in Sri Lanka. Political Buddhism through its electoral influence has become a decisive factor in shaping the country’s mode of governance.  Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s two-year presidency illustrated the inseparable nexus between political Buddhism and governance, and his appointment of controversial Gnanasara Thera as the Head of One Country One Law Task Force was a product of this nexus. It was this historic but pernicious nexus that eventually created today’s poly-crisis. Yet, there are quite a number of scholar monks in this country who keep away from this creed and warn political leaders of its destructive role in the development of this blessed island. Alas! they are crying in wilderness.

What specific pressures did the Mahanayakas bring upon the magistrates is not known. But having failed to win support to their cause from (a) the two Muslim plaintiffs who took Gnanasara to court and (b) the Muslim community’s so-called apex religious body, All Ceylon Jamiyathul Ulema (ACJU), and having also failed to secure Ranil Wickremesinghe’s presidential pardon, the possibility of the prelates directly pressurizing individual members of the judiciary should not be discounted.  If politicians could it why couldn’t Mahanayakas? Whether politicians or Mahanayakas, outside interference in judicial matters adds to the urgent need for reforms in governance, a need stressed even by the IMF.

The notoriety of Gnanasara is closely linked to his vituperative anti-Muslim campaign after the civil war. It was his public speeches against Muslims in particular and minorities in general that had been the immediate cause for a number of violent episodes after 2009. For example, it was his speech in 2015 in Aluthgama which led to the Sinhala-Muslim riot there, which, shockingly, was overseen by the then Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa who dared not to intervene to stop it. And it was Gnanasara and few of his saffron colleagues in 2019 desecrated the holy precinct of a Hindu temple in Mullaitivu by cremating the corpse of a Buddhist monk who died in Colombo.  He ignored the court order to stop it and operated like a state sponsored outlaw. A year before that in 2018 he contemptuously behaved inside the magistrate court in Homagama, disrupting the court proceedings and intimidating the magistrate for which he was sentenced to 19 years rigorous imprisonment. But on appeal to the Supreme Court that sentence was reduced to 6 years. However, when the former President Maithripala Sirisena decided to enter the Presidential race in 2019, he pardoned this social miscreant and got him released from prison so that Sirisena could capture the Buddhist vote bank. Finally, when two Muslim politicians went back to the court accusing Gnanasara for the insulting statement he made about Islam in 2016 a Buddhist magistrate sentenced him to four years rigorous imprisonment. Once again political Buddhism has intervened to get him released. The three Mahanayakas who initiated the move had virtually made a mockery of the country’s justice system, which as pointed out earlier has lost much of its independence already. However, it is commendable and ethical for religious leaders to plead in public on behalf of innocents who are thrown into prison and tortured by the state on false charges, but it is totally unethical and demeaning for them and their institutions to plead on behalf of proven offenders who had become a nuisance to society.  Gnanasara is one such nuisance. Where were the Mahanayakas for example, when Dr. Shafi was thrown into prison on false charges? Did they keep quiet because that prisoner happened to be a Muslim? Doesn’t Buddhist compassion extend to the entire humanity?

What is significant in this entire saga is that it all happened when the country is edging towards a presidential election and the date has been fixed for September 21st. The carnival of coalitions had begun in earnest. However, every coalition and their leaders, with the exception of NPP, know very well that without the backing of political Buddhism their chances of crossing the victory line would be hopeless. NPP is an exception, because it has already declared that it would change the political culture of this country through social revolution which implies distancing democratic governance from the theocratic crowd. This does not mean that NPP is anti-religious as its opponents try to portray, but it is not prepared to honeymoon with political Buddhism. That was the spirit behind and message from the aragalaya as encapsulated in the demand for system change. The aragalaya youth never entertained the presence of Buddhist priests in their protest gatherings. During one such gathering in Borella for example, when a bhikkhu tried to participate, aragalayists respectfully appealed to him to leave that place.

After his bail out, Gnanasara has not stopped his provocative utterances and behaves like a wounded elephant set to run riot. As election approaches, he and his BBS are available for hire at the right price. Gnanasara’s open accusation that those who were responsible for the 2019 Easter infamy are hiding behind political leaders should send jitters among those leaders who would wish to win him over to their side. Let Muslims in particular and minorities in general be warned of possible communal flareups as election approaches. Too often in the past, security forces had remained onlookers when such violence against minorities broke out. Will Gnanasara provide a golden opportunity for RW to postpone or cancel the election by instigating widespread violence and declaration of emergency? Nothing should be discounted in Sri Lankan politics.

The most venerable right reverend Galagoda-atte Gnanasara thero is actually a thug who uses a yellow robe to cover his criminal role in destabilizing society on the basis of dividing and ruling. The author compares him to a wounded elephant. I beg to differ. He is like a wounded hyena eyeing the carcass of Sri Lanka’s broken society to make a meal out of it’s innards while his handlers feast on more delectable parts. The chief priests in the three sects (the Buddha specifically advised monks not to get into different sects) are complicit in the crimes these thugs perpetrate under state patronage. It is high time that the long-awaited system change kicks in. Sept 21st will be the dawn of a new era where future generations can expect to live in a bountiful land that creates wealth for all to enjoy and is largely free of the corruption that has ruined it over the decades.

LP and OC, you’ll are absolutely right. Recently the SOB even made a veil threat against prelates for not saving his A… and getting him out early. I believe he is planning to join politics for his own survival. Feel the pulse of SB in coming election and join SLPP or start is his own racist party.

Why is the author not mentioning about thugs among Muslims. Most prominent is MLA Hisbulla politician from Katankudi who is using Islamic fundamentalism to create trouble to Tamils. He once boasted that he had destroyed Kali temple in Eravur, built shopping complex and gave it to Muslims. He also said that blood will flow meaning killing of Tamils, if north and east are merged. He built a educational complex and named it Batticaloa campus, which was a camouflaged to teach Sharia Law. Land belonging to Mahaveli board was released to construct it, when Tamil cattle herders who had been grazing being denied the use of their traditional land. It was found that the building breached planning laws and the content of the course was different from the one for which licence was given. It was closed, but now has been released by Ranil for cheap popularity. If law is applied equally, Hisbullah has to be in prison for his crimes. When such dirty things are being done, why only shout about the release of Rev Gnanasara. There are other Muslim hate mongers who are creating trouble to Tamils. (CONTD)

Athaulla and Harris are spreading racial hatred against Tamils. They are in the forefront of obstructing upgrading of Kalmunai north Pradesiya Sabha and construction of welcome arch at entrance to Veeramunai town by Tamils. If Muslims can get several new pradesiya sabhas carved out of Tamil councils and erect welcome arches in Arabic at entrances of several Muslim town, why Tamils are not permitted to do the same. Athaulla is implicated with a Muslim air force officer in violence at Valaichenai where several Tamil shops and houses were destroyed by Muslim gangs. Correctly Athaulla should be in prison. When Muslim hoodlums are roaming free, why cry about Rev Gnanasara being released from Prison. Give the facts about Aluthgama riots. Rev Gnanasara instigated Buddhists, but he is not the root cause. It was Muslim thugs who stoned a Buddhist priest walking down Dharga town that infuriated Buddhists. Muslims create trouble and when others retaliate cry foul.

This thug Gnanasara was released on bail pending an appeal against his sentence. Even thugs have rights.
Dr. Ali cannot pick and choose which judicial decisions he wants to agree with, and which he doesn’t.
Dr. Ali seems to assume that Gnanasara has been pardoned. He hasn’t.

      oc
Bail can be, and has been, conditional, barring the person from activities related to the offence for which he/she was convicted.
      That should have been done.
Without it he has license to do what he likes.

He is a religious , Buddhist , National and a well publicised Thug . Not
just any thug . His Friends are Political Leaders . Even Muslim and
Tamil Leaders . He must have been chased away in one package along
with his masters by the Aragalaya .

Why this dual treatment? Dr. Shafi was imprisoned on false charges—was it because he was a Muslim? Doesn’t Leaders’ compassion extend to all humanity? In Aluthgama, the Sinhala-Muslim riot, overseen by then-Defense Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa, went unchecked. The globally approved COVID burial practices were disallowed by the then president. The Aragalaya movement’s evolution is falsely attributed to Muslims and Tamil parties in a book, revealing a need to confront these misrepresentations. For the country to bankrupt why is there imprisonment after all the fraud they call it a mistake, and it never happens in the future by saying or accepting only the then health minister is brought to notice.

      Why this dual treatment?
This is a buddhist Sinhala country. The constitution gives special status to buddhism to become violent and to politicians to rob the nation and protect the criminals under the cover of buddhism. They got executive power in the name of buddhism to decide who should be released in bail. they did not bail Gnanasara but also Pilliyan as well to give minister post. Is there any difference between Rajapaksa and Ranil?

When Kanjipani Imran who was convicted for the murder of Sarath Ambepitiya was released on bail, no Muslim objected or condemned it. Why is this dual treatment ?. While on bail, he was vanished out of the country, which would not have happened without support of high ups and money changing hands. Why no inquiry has been done to fine out who were behind it and arrest them or get him extradited back.

If Hirunika Premachandra and Galagodatte Gnanasara Thero can be released on bail pending appeals after only a few months in prison why cannot the political prisoners who have been languishing in prison for several years be released on bail? Is there no one who will come forward to bail out even a few of the deserving cases?

The honourable Minister Pirasanna Ranatunga is in bail for more than two years? Some of the cases never finishes but some cases finishes quickly. This is a Buddhist country.

Yes. What was the necessity to give special status in a constitution?

We can only hope that his appeal is heard quickly and that he’s back where he belongs with a lengthened sentence. Charles Dickens wrote in Oliver Twist many moons ago that “the law is an ass”.

Ali carefully makes an exception of NPP from the Sinhala politicians who cosy up to the political priests. What evidence is there of this. The fact is that no Sinhala politician can cross the lines drawn by the so called “Maha” Sangha. Their power to bring out the Sinhala Buddhist ignorantia onto the roads still is feared. Hulky Buddhist monks will lead mobs and destroy all before them if their demands are not met. It is nonsense talk that the NPP is going to be different. Their past and their present does not indicate this.

Gnanasara is a thug, a disgrace to Buddhism, but despite going against all Buddhist principles & bringing disrepute to Buddhism, the Mahanayakas are unable to derobe him, bearing in mind that this is a country which banged up a tourist who had a tattoo of the Buddha on her arm as a sign of her faith, a poor woman for wearing a dress with a nautical symbol but mistakenly thought to be a Buddhist symbol by over zealous Buddhists & lately, a comedian who referred to baby Buddha as Suddodhana’s ‘small fellow’.

Aragalaya, quite correctly, shunned the political Buddhist clergy but the NPP, which claims to be inspired & ‘associated’ with the Aragalaya, entertains a ‘Bhikku Front’ in their membership. So, what is the much hyped & promised ‘change’, when it comes to Buddhist monks dabling in politics? Will AKD & the NPP publicly condone Gnanasara’s antics & tell the Mahanayakas to stay out of politics?

For a Mahanayake to derobe a priest the latter must be under the authority of the former.
You may remember a thug named Rev. Ian Paisley in N. Ireland.
Did anyone in the UK call for disrobing him?

        SJ
Rev. Ian Paisley, if I remember correctly, formed his own ‘Free Presbyterian Church of Ulster ‘, therefore, the Church of England, probably. had no powers to derobe him.

Anyway, he stood against the terrorist IRA & was elected to Parliament. He was the ‘voice’ of the extreme Protestant DUP which opposed concessions for the Catholics in Northern Ireland. He led many protest demonstrations & was imprisoned only for ‘unlawful assembly’. He was never pardoned & was never violent in his actions or intimidated witnesses as Gnanasara. If he was, he would have been dealt under the laws of the country but being highly vocal is not promoting racial (or religious) hatred. Gnansara is very much associated with intimidation, even openly threatening witness inside a court of law, & spewed racial hatred, which cannot be said about Rev Paisley.

          Hello Raj-UK,
Ian Paisley and Peter Robinson were leaders of the DUP when they were instrumental in forming the Ulster Resistance which went on to smuggle Arms into Northern Ireland. Paisley declared “Every Ulsterman must be recruited to resist – by whatever means the situation demands – those who would drive us against our wills into an all-Ireland republic.”
“The following year, Ulster Resistance joined forces with the two established loyalist paramilitary groups, the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) and Ulster Defence Association (UDA), to smuggle an enormous arsenal of weapons into the province, including about 200 Czech-made assault rifles called VZ58s and tens of thousands of rounds of ammunition”.

Ian Paisley was a bit ahead of my time. I was a student in the early 80s & had only a passing interest in Northern Ireland. Whether it is the IRA & loyalist para militery groups or Muslim jihadists, it all boils down to religion & extreme right wing politics. Paisley was a highly vocal extremist politician but compared to Gnanasara, he is an amateur when it comes to intimidation & thuggery..

        Hello SJ, and Raj-UK
Many people did, we all hated him. I am sure you (SJ) are well aware of his role in Northern Ireland but for others see this – https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2017/jun/27/troubled-past-the-paramilitary-connection-that-still-haunts-the-dup
The Dirty War in Northern Ireland has many parallels to Sri Lanka’s past history. I know this because I knew people that were actively involved from both sides in Northern Ireland

Remember, the Buddhist monk was only charged for his disciplinary issues, not for his REVELATIONS about Mus1ims and his revelations are true. That’s why Musl1ms terrorists are try hard to shut him up.
    /
The thero’s bravery of exposing the Marakkala Musl|m terrorism and their other shenanigans should be PRAISED, not criticised.
    /

Had his lawyers represented him properly he would not have been in jail in first place. If those Mus|im kallathonies had not invaded Buddhist historic sites, the brave monk may have not made the adverse comment about them.
    /
A Mufti in Middle East has taken the Musl|ms in Sri Lanka as an
example in his Q&A session as the worst practitioners of 1salam. He also called them “tomb worshipers”.
