The Presidential media division issuing a communique today justified the spending of Rs. 180 million to carry out the repair work of the new President’s Residence.
Explaining matters, the PMD said the building had to be renovated by merging two old houses in order to lift it to the standards suitable for a President’s living.
Quoting the President’s Secretary, PMD said garages and residential quarters to house the presidential security personnel had to be fully renovated.
The construction, the communique said was carried out by the State owned Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau (CECB).
The PMD quoting President’s Secretary said that President Maithripala Sirisena has refused to use the President’s House in Fort as its maintenance cost exceeds Rs. 15 million per month.
Referring to the BMW vehicles and the BMW motorcycles, mentioned in media rports the PMD said they had been imported by the previous government in October 2014.
The PMD communique said the vehicles were taken for use as they could not be re-exported.
The government yesterday submitted a supplementary estimate seeking the approval of Parliament for an allocation of Rs. 180 million to renovate and refurbish the official residence of President Maithripala Sirisena.
The supplementary allocation of Rs. 180,688,000 was presented to Parliament by Chief Government Whip Media Minister Gayantha Karunatillake.
It sought the approval of the House to allocate Rs. 96,391,000 to rehabilitate and improve the residence of the President at C61 and C62, Paget Road, Colombo and an additional Rs. 84,297,000 for the construction of buildings and structures at the same location.
Apart from Rs. 180 million, another allocation amounting to Rs. 70,600,000 to purchase one BMW limousine and 12 BMW R 1200 motor cycles for the Presidential Security Division has been submitted.

Do you really believe if MR was elected he would ever make TNA the opposition or take the Army personal to a international court or change to constitution to deliver your dream land etc etc?
However We all respect your unity among Tamils to archive your dream. It our own Sinhalaya who would sell out their own country, people and leaders and justify saying YAHAPALANYA. Go enjoy while it last

“That’s ok sir, we all know Tamils secretly loves to death RW and MS.”
I find it difficult to reconcile your perception with reality. Have your reality checked.
“Do you really believe if MR was elected he would ever make TNA the opposition “
So MR defines what democracy means to this island people. MR has a Sinhala/Buddhist problem, so do you.
“take the Army personal to a international court”
Who is taking the war criminals to International Court?
“change to constitution to deliver your dream land etc etc?”
What is the dream MR intents to stop?
“However We all respect your unity among Tamils to archive your dream.”
What is the Tamil dream?
” It our own Sinhalaya who would sell out their own country, people and leaders and justify saying YAHAPALANYA.”
I love to buy the country back from Tamils and Sinhalayas, kick both out of my island back to their ancestral land in South India.
What is the going price for the country?
I find it irritating when both Sinhalese and Tamils constantly complaining about what the future holds for them.
Stop whinging and get on with your life.
Here is a Louis Armstrong Lyrics of “What A Wonderful World” read and cheer up.
I see trees of green,
red roses too.
I see them bloom,
for me and you.
And I think to myself,
what a wonderful world.
I see skies of blue,
And clouds of white.
The bright blessed day,
The dark sacred night.
And I think to myself,
What a wonderful world.
The colors of the rainbow,
So pretty in the sky.
Are also on the faces,
Of people going by,
I see friends shaking hands.
Saying, “How do you do?”
They’re really saying,
“I love you”.
I hear babies cry,
I watch them grow,
They’ll learn much more,
Than I’ll ever know.
And I think to myself,
What a wonderful world.
Yes, I think to myself,
What a wonderful world.
Oh yeah.

I thought I better make you sader by letting you read the lyrics of a song written specially for the peace loving optimists:
John Lenon “Imagine”
Imagine there’s no heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today…
Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace…
You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world…
You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one

“Thunderstruck”
Thunder, thunder, thunder, thunder
I was caught
In the middle of a railroad track
I looked round
And I knew there was no turning back
My mind raced
And I thought what could I do
And I knew
There was no help, no help from you
Sound of the drums
Beating in my heart
The thunder of guns
Tore me apart
You’ve been
Thunderstruck
Rode down the highway
Broke the limit, we hit the town
Went through to Texas, yeah Texas, and we had some fun
We met some girls
Some dancers who gave a good time
Broke all the rules
Played all the fools
Yeah yeah they, they, they blew our minds
And I was shaking at the knees
Could I come again please
Yeah them ladies were too kind
You’ve been
Thunderstruck
I was shaking at the knees
Could I come again please
Thunderstruck, Thunderstruck, Thunderstruck, Thunderstruck
It’s alright, we’re doin’ fine
It’s alright, we’re doin’ fine, fine, fine
Thunderstruck, yeah, yeah, yeah
Thunderstruck, Thunderstruck
Thunderstruck, baby, baby
Thunderstruck, you’ve been Thunderstruck
Thunderstruck, Thunderstruck
You’ve been Thunderstruck

You know I don’t want to be part of your world as I see it, full of darkness, unhappiness, bigotry, racism, lack of human dignity, embedded ideas of them and us, perverted history forms the basis of your religion, your paranoid mind never can live in peace, not knowing right from wrong, childish, non stop raging …………. yet you expect others to part of your world. No thanks.
However you can be part of our world, the world full of humanity and optimism, forgiving, treasuring unity in diversity, when opportunity present itself creating a win win situation for all the stakeholders, … ….
In our humane liberal world admission is open to all including you. The only qualification we expect from applicant is an ability to demonstrate some wisdom, educational qualification is absolutely not necessary.

Song for ‘One World’
Dedicated to Non-Violent United Neighbourly One World

One world many nations
Many cultures many visions
Religious celebrations
Bringing all people close together
United one mission marching forward
Coexisting in Heaven on Earth void of all wars!
Superstitious information
Ill-conceived manipulations
(Sown) Self-centered illusions
Bred violence and brought most separations
Among once free joyous secular souls
Creating hells in parts of Earth with mighty dominations!
Time has never been so right
To share the fruits of labour and minds
Enacting united decisive fight
For sustainable science and commerce of hearts
Embracing truth as the very basis of life –
Guaranteeing forever equal humane rights!

President Sirisena was the common candidate who contested the last(hopefully the last in SL) presidential election promising to completely abolish the Executive presidency. Then why is he bothered and waste public money to repair and build another mansion for a president, a position which is going to be abolished anyway after his first term. DR Jayampathy Wickramaratna MP, the constitutional expert, said that there is no point having an election spending a colossal amount of money to appoint a president whose powers are removed. His suggestion was to completely abolish and have a ceremonial president. As such, we do not need to build buildings for god’s sake.

The President’s House in Fort is the appropriate place for any president to live. It has the advantages of location, security and history. Whether it is used or not, it has to be maintained. Why the excuse of cost? Why should two houses that could be used by two other office holders be occupied by the president and modified at a cost, when there is already a place designated for him?
Dr. Rajasingham Narendran
/
Bensen Berner / October 8, 2015
I tend to agree with Dr.Narendran. Sirisena must live in a home befitting the Head of the Sri Lankan State. The President’s House is a fitting residence for the President who is indeed a humble person. He must not come down from that pedestal. Much has been said about his humility due also to the inability to communicate effectively in English. After all Premadasa and Rajapaksa had the same problem but Sirisena has an internationally recognized translator in his son. He must make the full use of this. Bensen

Look folks. Here is a man who said that he would have been six feet under with his kith & kin, if he lost the Presidential Election. All those including MS himself did not believe at all that he would have a slightest of a chance against MR.That’s why he was hiding in a coconut estate in Kurunegala with his family on the January 8th night. MS has now forgotten that it was people like us who has never voted for UNP since 1960, are those who made it possible. He owe it to us to behave like a decent human being. And now the man who lived his childhood in a wattle and daub hut in god-forsaken Polonnaruwa at that time wants a house renovated at a cost of Rs.180 million in poor SL. Another MR is in the making. All US Presidents in their short history have lived in the White House whether they liked it or not. Same in India too. This type of incurable diseases have come to stay with SL leaders only. Isn’t it pathetic.

How short are the memories of this Nation? Remember how CBK spent over Rs 1500 mil just to lay out the site next to the parliament at Kotte for a Presidential Palace. MR did the same at Temple Trees. Now this Bambuwa wants to spend Rs. 180 mil. Comparatively only RW has not resorted to such waste.
/
Leelagemalli / October 8, 2015
Yes, Gamini, you will only see things in CBK or any others, but never in RW. To be honest, right at the moment, I am agreement with RW but in the past, recent past, his lethagic and inablities paved the ground MRs or any criminals to raise their head to this date. Even if any good govt would make their genuine efforts today, it is not easy to go against the crimes being continued by MR led groups even today. Please rememeber, you also need to have a powerful OPPOSITION in a democracy – at the time, 18AMD was gotpassed, your beloved leader stayed as if kirimati gilapu kimubla did it. At the time, MS SB was sacked from her being CJ, there RW had been doing nothing.. let it go actually. Today, just because CBK and all the powerful social groups not forgetting JVP spoon and fed the UNP, they could raise their head at least to the current levels. I dont say that RW is not good, bu the was very weak/not active enough during the second term of MR.
/
gamini / October 8, 2015
Leelagemalli,
I am afraid it is not because of the silence of RW that MR became a Tyrant. It is because of the tacit support extended to MR by the gullible in this society. Just see how after MR has been exposed of his wrong doings in misappropriating public funds and waste of it and also murder, still there are some who support him. Are you serious that if RW agitated when MR got the 18th amendment passed or when CJ 43 was unseated, that RW would have succeeded in unseating MR? You know best than me what would have happened if RW instigated the public. MR would not have been toppled but certainly many would have lost their lives. MR would have continued and RW would have been lambasted for the unrest and blamed his greed for using the masses to his advantage. Probably you would have blamed RW as well. But the gentleman and sage he is how MR was unseated is beyond the comprehension of all including MR. What I meant was that RW has no kink to build false facades and waste public funds unlike CBK, MR or even MS.

Wrong decision Mr President. You should never have opted to change location to Paget road at a cost of 180 million plus. You should have stayed at the house meant for the President, or else opted for your humble home at Polonaruwa. If renovation was needed there it would not have cost you more than a couple of hundreds of thousands. It appears you have very quickly cultivated a taste for luxuries, probably after experiencing them in your foreign trips, and are now starry eyed and have lost all your good senses and proportions. Very sad, for yourself, and the people who expected so much from you.If it is still not too late then put this 180 million expenditure on hold, take a deep breath ,step aside and get some good advise, maybe from the Maha Sangha, and revoke this decision. There are far more pressing needs of the people where this money could be put to use. Also look at your recent activity which has been contrary to your original style and ask yourself how and why did all these happen, call to mind your meteoric rise from a poor Health Minister to President made possible by all Sri Lankans, and ensure that you do not repeat those acts of folly, I do not need to mention them here. If you fail us now, there will be very little future for the country. Act Now !

Please reconsider , President Sirisena. Last week attended the funeral of a 14 year old girl who was diagnosed with Leukaemia 3 weeks ago. So sad. Was responding well to treatment but died of other complications. I was told several children in ICU died due to the countywide power failure as there was no back up Generator at Maharagama for ICU ! I am sure a Generator at least for children’s section can be bought for much less than what you plan to spend. Family of another 14 year old boy suffering from Leukaemia is struggling to find money for his treatment. In your hometown of Polonnaruwa many patients and families are suffering immensely due to CKD. Please clean up Presidents House and move in without spending on yet another Official residence. Also please instruct your Health Minister and officials there are many shortcomings to be attended to in Health sector than simply talking of banning sugar, salt etc.

Re comments that have been made about Presidents House in the Fort.
The silent fact is that that old colonial relic is haunted. Anybody who has stayed there (or, has needed to work very late into the night/early morning) may have seen the shortish, bald-headed, portly man wandering the corridors. Some of the old retainers say he was a former governor who was hounded out of office. He knows the building well enough to smartly disappear when his nocturnal reverie is disturbed.
So, what is to be done with this historic old colonial building. It certainly has enough history to attract many to its doors, and a well curated museum to our times will certainly help pay its way.
Most of all it will remind us of what we lost when our imagination ran out.

What is happening to the yahapalana??….corrupt free/ waste free!
The beginning was the cut-out put up by some stoogers upon returning from UN. Now a new house.
SL has a symbolic Presidential house which has to be maintained unless its going to be demolished and developed as a city property.
President JR lived in his private home @ Ward PLace – an ordinary house/ President Premadasa lived in his private @ Sucharitha
President MS could have his own home and use the Presidential house for official purpose if he does not want to live there.

Please suspend the expenditure and divert the allocation to build a “Climate Controlled WAREHOUSE” to store agricultural produce including paddy. You could, instead building an Airport in Pollonaruwa, this WAREHOUSE PROJECT will make you the God Sent son of that land. After all you are also a son of a great human being called the FARMER. I urge you to ignore all these negative vibes and go ahead with your plans. After all, you are as deserving of and have every right to reap the largess of this country, same as your predecessors. Never mind what promises and pledges you made during the election. Everyone deserves (another) new house and (another) new car. Well, everyone except the voting public of course !
We all understand and appreciate that promises have to be made to win votes and after the election is won, promises are meant to be broken
In fact, what was Mahinda thinking ? He promised to win the war which every previous government pussyfooted around and he actually kept his promise !!
In closing, I have this message for the First Son and Ministerial Offspring. Have patience. You will also have your sports cars pretty soon, just as soon as they figure out a scheme to increase duty on regular/economical cars and remove duty from high-performance vehicles.

The cunning and scheming JRJ is responsible for this unnecessary requirement of a palatial house for retiring Presidents at state expenditure. One reason he is said to have cited was the case of W. Dahanayake, who virtually packed up his bag – not bags – and left Temple Trees in Spartan terms. Some say by bus while Bradman says he arranged a car. The intolerant JRJ probably hid the fact men like President Harry Truman just left the White House – reportedly driving his old car, with wife and bags by the side, to his home in rural Missouri. And, he was the President of the richest and most powerful country in the history of the world – at that time.
Now this unnecessary, unwelcome and wasteful expenditure – to be paid by the poor people – will be exploited by aiyo Sirisenas and the rubble to come in the future. That can mean Kudu Mervin as well.
Strange thing is our political leaders are famous for doing the wrong things and failing in the good ones. JRJ, by the way, did not benefit by his own mischievous constitutional imposition. The climate for him then was not good for a sprawling palace for him. I agree he was no pauper. He had the spacious “Braemar” at Colombo’s Ward Place to retire into.
BTW, will aiya Sirisena surprise us and declare he will propose the removal of this clause in the statute books in the true spirit of yahapalanaya. That’ll be the day.
