President Says ‘Won’t Weaken Govt.’ But Rules Out One-Party Government

Maithripala Sirisena speaking to heads of media institutions this morning (6th) at the President’s House said that ‘as a responsible president’ he will make sure that the Government is not weakened.

He also said that there is no possibility for any single party to form a government on its own. He said that a government can only be formed if everyone came together in accordance to the number of MPs and the particular structure of the various political parties represented in Parliament. An invitation for such a union would be sent to all, he said.

Sirisena added that he is determined to strengthen the Government and move forward with all these forces.

Hope you are not asking the Ministers, State Ministers, and Deputy Ministers who voted against the Hon. Prime Minister to join the govt. to strengthen it.
How could they work with the PM as they do not have any confidence in him?
It appears that you are still trying to put your party before the country.
During the last 3 years it was quite clear to the voters that these SLFP MPS were against the “Yahapalanaya” government but you are the only person in Sri Lanka who could not see it.
    What a shamble!!!!!!!

This man would never allow to make every effort pledges they promised before being elected.

who want a president who stands on the way ?

He is good for kamba aedhiima balance karanna… nothing goes forwards so long he stays undecided. Leaders shoud have balls to work and drastically.

I think the most tortured place in hell should be reserved not for traitors, but… for cowards. The weakest, most spineless losers. Because it seems to me that traitors? At least they made a choice. But cowards? They just run around biting their fingernails, totally afraid to do anything. Which is totally worse.

      MA.
It’s not the cowards; lets face it. It’s the IDIOTS , the people who vote for them.
The country is broke, the so called leadership is dishonest to the core, the law enforcement and judiciary are dysfunctional and corruption and a culture of impunity takes precedence.
Excuses! Excuses! It’s PARADISE for the POLITICIANS! and HELL for the great majority of people. That is DEMOCRACY Sri Lankan style.

Already 2 cant agree. Imagine trying to get that whole ruddy bunch into one basket. Only God in his mercy can save this country from the invisible dark cloud covering. These so called “all forces” will negate each other and once the water goes above nose, it does not matter whether 1 inch or 1 mile. But our hope is in the fact that all these arrogant “I am the greatest” cannot unite. They have no peace dividing the spoils.

Siriseana’s attempt to unite with MR so as to win the presidency again, failed miserably with Ranil’s victory.
The UNP should form a government now along with dissidents from opposition.
This would be stable until next presidential election.
Stability is necessary to prevent further corruption and waste, and turn the economy around.

Sirisena is determined to weaken the government in the name of strengthening it. This village boy thinks he is so smart, but he is actually stupid and foolish. He should allow the UNP to form their own party government. If Sirisena really wants to punish the corrupted, why does he need to wait? For whom or what is he waiting? He is the president still with executive powers, so why not proceed with the punishment?

He is running out of all options..
He came to power with support of UNP. Otherwise; can he dram to be a president..
But it is not wise politics to hit back of UNP now.
He should act with some wisdom and sense of humour.
    Greatfulness.

Mr president, it will be a good idea to handover your position to Ranil and make Sarath Fonseka the prime minister. We need to clear the mess and all the murderors and racist thugs should be send behind bars . The way Srilanka is heading is not a good sign , Mara and thugs will take over the country and start milking.

SF as PM, that I agree. Ranil as Pres, no, definitely not. He is the one who has been doing deals with MR at the dawn of 9th Jan 2015. Ranil, with or without MS’ agreement, has put the invincible protection wall around all former political crooks. Put SF at the role of Exec Pres; then you will see the results just like the way he dealt with VP and his basket gang of terrorists!

Punish the crook friends first before we talk of a single government.
That was the mandate on the 8th of Jan 2015 , that stays the same , no change .
No more Political bargaining or Manoeuvring.
The country can manage without the Past and present crooks.
Find clean intelligent politicians, young and old with brains of wisdom.

RE: President Says ‘Won’t Weaken Govt.’ But Rules Out One-Party Government

“Sirisena added that he is determined to move strengthen the Government and move forward with all these forces.”

now that Sirisena’s earlier strategy to undermine the Prime Minister Ranil Wicjkramasinghe has flopped and backfired.

This is the best option for him the next 2 years until Sirisena is replaced.

When will the President learn his lesson? He is the one who wanted Ranil to resign after he came third in the LG election. He is the one who attacked UNP during the election when he himself was the head of the Govt. He is the one who refused to appoint Sarath Fonseka as Minister of Law and Order in order to protect Gotabaya and Rajapakse family. Who is he? He is fast proving to be a clueless politician who bends with the wind. Will he at least after the strong confidence vote on Ranil after the NCM appoint Sarth Fonseka and kick out all the SLFP ministers who voted with the NCM. How can they work under Ranil? How can the President ask them to work under Ranil?

This power hungry fool is turning to be a curse for the country. He has been in the SLFP for ever but was not competent enough to lead so was given namesake titles and kept on aside. Unfortunately the stupid voters wanted a card carrying Sinhala Buddhist if they were to vote against MR and Rev. Sobitha Thera had little choice.

After being elected he has screwed the country from day one. His first order of business was to bring the corrupt politicians that the people rejected through the back door. Then put his extended family into lucrative positions.

Then he wanted to lead the SLFP and using the crooks he brought to govt managed to get it and then drill it to the ground. SLFP has gone from number ONE to FOUR. He used the same crooks and JO to initiate the NCM through the back door. When the going got tough and saw that the numbers were not there he double crossed the idiots that trusted him.

Now how can he remove ministers that voted for the NCM when he was part of the failed coup? No wonder Namal was furious.

Isn’t SLFP members who voted with the NCM still holding ministerial positions and deputy speaker position weakening of the Government? Hello!

  • 2

Mr. President: You have said , as reported above, “An invitation for such a union would be sent to all”. Yes, of course, after the outcome of the NCM on April 4, 2018, you have no other option. You as the Head of a section of the SLFP and ULF and Ranil W as the head of the UNP were all these years since January 8, 2015 tried and did all tricks and played political games to “strengthen” and “cut each other’s throat” by mustering the forces that were once rejected by 6.2 million voters of the country. On April 4, on what transpired in Parliament, both of you would have realized that this “Individual Game Plans” are not going to work for either of you. Now faced with that “Dilemma”, it appears that the ONLY CHOICE is to form a “UNION” , without weeding out any, but collaborate and co-exist for common benefit and individual gains. This “SCHEME” that you in connivance with RW are now proposing is EXACTLY what the deposed MR regime and its constituents WANT and they will be ever grateful for this excellent and smooth path (the HIGHWAY) both of you are building for them to ESCAPE from all the crimes committed for which they are still responsible and accountable. But please note and be AWARE both , you and RW are not going to be pardoned for that BETRAYAL.

Everyone from the previous regime will join on condition that No action is taken against them for All their Past Corrupt acts and Crimes and that they are allowed to continue their Criminal Activities Freely as Before.

Sillysena will not understand the constitution and the extent of his powers even if he reads it. He has no alternative but to allow the person who demonstrates support of the majority to form the government, not dictate how it is formed. He is a gamaya and should go back to his peasant roots. The idea that you can wash a Sinhala farmer and make him king is simply not true. Power corrupts a person more when he enjoys a position he was not cut out to hold. The same is true for MR.

      Dear Mama Sinhalam,
      .
I think that we know that “gamyas” are important, but all that you say is true.
      .
I think we feel all the more let down because we reposed so much faith in him. Let us hope that he looks at all these things before he acts on Monday.
      .
Well, his English reading may be slow, but he ought to have had some guys monitoring all this. I’ve never met him, but I did offer to do something like that for him, having got to know his close staff prior to his January 2015 election.
      .
MR is not the same: much worse!

As I read S.33 A of the 19th Amendment, the President has to act under the authority of Parliament where RW has a majority. He is a lame duck. The sooner he realises this the better. He has no independent powers.

33A. The President shall be responsible to Parliament for the due exercise, performance and discharge of his powers, duties and functions under the Constitution and any written law, including the law for the time being relating to public security.”.

The ball is in Ranil’s court , if his usual lethargy prevails ,then the repercussions will be not be not just fate , ,but suicide.

Only he alone will be responsible.

By the way a goose keeps running over my grave ,

Does anyone see another future civil war in the making ,???

    I feel it …
Whatever happened to all those militias who fought beside the troops from East ?
East is like a time bomb !!!
    ( Reality prevails over superstition)

This might sound unthinkable ,but you are free to think what you want.

If not for Militia in Iraq and Syria ,the war would have ended long time ago, it’s tragic that the government decided. to get militias involved and leave them back intact for future personal agendas was a greater mistake.

There could be a Civil war, may not start against the government
,but it could be among the leftover militias , they were never officially disarmed.

This could drag a lot of innocent lives and in the midst get the government
dragged into the mess ,if it ever happens then it will never end.

Its money ,money that makes the world bleed – with wars .

I refuse to accept all that is going around among Sinhalese -Muslim hate is Racism or Religious bigotry.

It seems more like opening a pathway to drag the Country into a very messy Civil war & getting everyone involved. ,

Never underestimate Business Mafias ,they are more ruthless than Drug lords .

Weapon trade the returns are huge and fast ,you never know who is into it ,with fake fronts .

If People give into the wrong players.

    We are doomed forever

Fault is with UNP MPs, they could have defeated the PM in NCM & find a new UNP PM very easily as what RW deserved really was defeat.

As we know considerable number of UNP MPs were in genuine need of replacing RW but unfortunately party solidarity/interests exceeded national interest that resulted in making RW still the PM.

Now an unsought party pride has started to play demanding sacking ministers who didn’t cast vote against NCM making govt. fragile.

So a minority government is in the offing, to depend on our opportunity minded minority parties for stability.

Only in Sri Lanka politicians are untouchable by the law.

“A South Korean court jailed former President Park Geun-hye for 24 years on Friday over a scandal that exposed webs of corruption between political leaders and the country’s conglomerates.

Park became South Korea’s first democratically elected leader to be forced from office last year when the Constitutional Court ordered her out over a scandal that landed the heads of two conglomerates in jail.”

Sri Lankans can not speak for a proper govt because of the 31% of voters asking for superiority over 69% of the majority. Now, He does not complete their agenda, now the Common Candidate has become a nuisance. Read most of the comments. So, a clown is a PM in Sri lanka. He escaped conviction from the bond scam because he was the PM.

It took us seventy years of internal family oriented stoush to establish the main power contenders to three. Looks like a good option is for two to hold the reins and the other in opposition. The two in power will check and balance each other.
Having said that – the cabinet must take collective responsibility. This is absolutely necessary and the President must assist the PM to implement this.

Sillysena has no brains ,how can those who have no confidence in Ranil ,work with him ? It will be the same
Messy government , again with the racists , fraudsters, murderers s , criminal minded ministers.
Sirisena should step down as President , as he is not doing anything good for the people other than protecting his party’s crooks .
