President Maithripala Sirisena, addressing a gathering in Polonnaruwa this morning, vowed to ensure that the death penalty would be implemented in the case of drug offenders, pointing out that when he proposed the same to Cabinet it was received with rousing applause and unanimous approval.

Sirisena, made this assertion at a ceremony to inaugurate the construction of a hospital with funds gifted by the Chinese Government.
He pointed out that none of those who have expressed objection to legal murder have done anything to combat the drug menace in the country. However Sirisena did not explain how executing offenders necessarily puts an end to drug trafficking and abuse.
The Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission has opposed capital punishment, a position also taken by Minister of Finance and Media Mangala Samaraweera. Samaraweera, however, has stated that despite his personal opinion he stands by the ‘common position’ taken by cabinet.
Opponents have pointed out that unlike other crimes, those wrongfully convicted due to error of judgment or evidence of innocence being unavailable to court at the time of determination, those executed cannot have their innocence affirmed or compensated. In such an event, the President as well as the entire cabinet would be held responsible for the legal murder of the innocent.
The death penalty was abolished during the tenure of S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike in 1956 but was reinstated to punish those convicted of assassinating him in 1959. The relevant law was amended in 1978 requiring a ratification by the President, effectively ending execution. The last legal murder was carried out in 1976.

What is your problem with Govigama people? They are the largest caste in Sri Lanka. So it is natural they have some influence in politics. Although Govigama caste is monolithic it has sub-castes too.
The Sinhalese caste system which was based on the duty to the King (Rajakaariya) started during Dutch era, same like the Tamil caste system, though the latter was based on the religion. At the time nobody owned lands other than the King. So everybody was supposed to work for the King in various fields. People started owning lands only during British rule.
Sinhalese don’t bother about caste system anymore at societal level though it is still in practice in arranged marriages.

President says the death penalty is only for drug traffickers.
All the well known big culprits who are serving death sentence for drug trafficking cannot be executed as they have filed Appeals.
Therefore, if death penalty is resumed which was abolished de facto, only those who are one time offenders will be executed for show. What is the rationale of this?
This is exactly what King Kekille did. Once he ordered to execute a thin jeweler by trampling him. The thin man said that as he was bony, the elephant would be hurt if he was trampled and suggested the King to trample a fat shopkeeper in town instead, as it is easy for the elephant. King agreed and executed the fat man in place of the thin man.
President’s decision to resume execution is not sufficient to curb the drug menace.

There is a choice for US Presidents to “swear” or “affirm” when taking oath of office.
1. Franklin Pierce didn’t “swear.” He only “affirmed.” The reason was his son’s death two months prior to his taking oath. Being a devoted Christian, he believed that it was a punishment for his sins. So he opted not to use the Bibile.
2. John Quincy Adams and his father were regarded as the most religious of the first six Presidents. He read the Bible virtually every morning. Yet Quincy chose to swear in with his hand on a Constitutional Law Volume. He didn’t even campaign for his Presidency. He is regarded as one of the two worst Presidents in the US. The other one is Bush. Same as Pierce’s, his infant daughter also died in an agonizing illness.
3. Theodore Roosevelt didn’t use the Bible when he was “rushed” to take oath following the assassination of William McKinley.
4. Lyndon Baines Johnson was sworn in using a Catholic missal belonging to the slain President Kennedy after Kennedy’s assassination as there was no Bible aboard Air Force One.
What I am trying to point out is, though there are 4 examples of not using the Bible, they all were good Christians.

Yes, I fully endorse what Venerable Elle Gunawamsa Thero said and insist that the next President should take oath of office before the Most Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy.
Sinhalese Buddhists should make sure to elect a Buddhist as the next President who is not afraid to take over the Buddha Sasana portfolio as President Sirisena’s intention to re-implement the death penalty is the biggest blow to Buddha Sasana in Sri Lanka.
Not only that, Sinhalese Buddhists should make sure to elect a party as the majority in the Parliament whose leader, the future Prime Minister, is a Buddhist by birth not by conversion.
We were subjected to enough attacks, denigration, devaluation and hatred not to mention the heartache we feel on daily basis by seeing the discrimination to Buddhism, Maha Sangha and Buddhists.
As the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa pointed out, opening even a “Dhamma School” in a temple is also now restricted.
The latest is the “Sangha Division and Elimination Act.” We should demand the government to WITHDRAW THIS PARLIAMENTARY ACT.
We are not going through this again. Our voice is the majority. It is time we fight for our rights, too.

My comment continued….. Recently we saw how a wife of a prisoner waiting to board a bus in front of Welikada jail at Baseline Road was SAVED by the undercover STF personnel. That was a “Contract Killing” arranged by another convicted criminal living in the jail. It is now known that thousands and thousands of calls have gone out from the jail inmates to outside criminals and hundreds and hundreds of calls have been replied. This include those of the phones used by the two in remand custody in connection with the “Bond Scam”. It is learned, even “Makandure Madusha” who is “Hiding” abroad has contacts with criminals both inside and outside jails, and “Execute” operations very successfully. What have you done to address these issues? Isn’t there a system to “GAG”these or “Monitor” these communication channels? How all these “Very Sophisticated” communications equipment got inside the jail houses? You spend millions and billions to import luxury vehicles for the use of Legislators; but cannot think of spending quarter of that amount and install proper mechanisms to curb these operation. Therefore, I propose you to consider imposing the “Capital Punishment” on all those, including the Legislators, Prison and Law Enforcement officials who have “Overlooked” and “Neglected” their duty of SERVING and PROTECTING the PEOPLE. If a person is convicted in a court for drug trafficking & death penalty has been imposed, he/she must be given the punishment without being held as a prisoner for lifetime.
Life imprisonment is another punishment for another crime so nobody must be given a punishment for uncommitted crime.

Death penalty for any crime is useless in detering the crime. The criminals know if they are caught they will get long sentences but they do it anyways; is it because they think “Oh it is okay to be in prison for 20-life as long as I am not killed”? I don’t think so. Death penalty is the most irreversible punishment and it should never be enacted for any criminal convicted for any crime. Does not matter how heinous a crime is killing a wrongly convicted man/woman by the state would be far more heinous.

Maithripala gives me the impression time and again that he is a petty meany, and not a leader at all. For me the moment of revelation was when he castigated the FCID lady on national TV for handcuffing Gota and other ex-military top brass and dragging them to court. It was so transparent that he had succumbed to threats by agents of the deep state and mafia monks and that he was beginning to compromise. It proved beyond any doubt to the people who had placed their trust in him that they had indeed made a fatal error: they had chosen a moral coward to fight corruption and injustice. Finally the fate of the 2015 January mandate was sealed when he decided to takeover the leadership of the SLFP that was offered to him by the treacherous Rajapaksa faction. The greedy Maithri didn’t realize it was a trap. A man who promised to fulfill the election pledges and stepdown after one term, now began to talk about a second term.

(He and bodyguard were shot dead by drug dealer Potta Nawfer soon after and his widow given a “compensation” of Rs Five Million by president CBK) – He also sentenced Velupillai Prabakaran to 200 years imprisonment for the Central Bank bombing.
