Besieged Muslims made up their minds; Muslim politicians irrelevant in today’s political scenario

With campaign for the forthcoming presidential elections on January 08, 2015 under way in full swing, the island’s Muslims appear to have made up their minds. In doing so they dismissed Muslim political parties and politicians as corrupt, morally bankrupt and unfit to represent the Muslim community.

Muslims, by and large, have lost confidence in their politicians in view of their shameful records which brought disrepute to the community. They failed to defend the community especially during the past four years when saffron terror gangs, with state patronage, unleashed violence against them.

These attacks striking at the very root of their religious, economic, cultural life and very existence as a community, subjected Muslims to immense hardships and sufferings.

Reiterating this Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, SLMC, parliamentarian M.M.M.Haaris stated that the Muslim community has” already decided whom to vote for”. This is the general views expressed in almost every gathering from dinner parties to other functions.

More than quarter century ago the SLMC which came with the slogan of Islam, Sharia and Unity only to abandon all these noble principles and the interest of the community for the sake of positions and personal benefits. They only served themselves under the pretext of serving the community which was left in lurch to face the brunt.

Hakeem colombotelegraphThe SLMC, outcome of late president J.R. Jayewardene’s racist and arrogant politics, Indian manipulations and opportunistic politics of SLMC founder M.H.M. Ashraff, has today ended up as Greek tragedy for the community as it also contributed to the isolation Muslims from the majority community.

From the very inception SLMC was a “one man show”. The leader who ruthlessly exploited Islam and Muslims’ religious sentiments to promote his selfish political agenda was a virtual dictator surrounded out by “Yes Men”.

Mr. Ashraff’s unexpected death in a helicopter crash triggered off the leadership crisis.

The struggle for leadership within the SLMC was cleverly exploited by the Sinhala leaderships of all shades of political opinions by selecting one group to promote against the other.

Initially the leadership struggle was between Rauf Hakeem and the late Ashraff’s wife Mrs Ferial Ashraff. For example former President Chandrika Kumaratunga picked up Mrs. Ferial to promote and inevitably driven a wedge within the SLMC.

This trend continued in the subsequent years. It was as part of this ongoing game Muslim Congress parliamentarian Rishard Bathiurdeen was used as a tool to wash SLMC leader Rauf Hakeem’s dirty linen and discredit him. Bathiudeen also   established a separate party and further divided the already divided SLMC.

In return Badurdeen was rewarded with a ministerial portfolio and promoted. Last week he announced his decision to remain with the government and support President Mahinda Rajapaksa in the forthcoming presidential elections.

The overall response within the community was “indifference”. Many asked “what else one can expect from him. He is just another person who served himself, in keeping with SLMC tradition, in the name of the beleaguered Muslim community.

Justifying Minister Bathiudeen’s decision some said “after all who is this Bathiurdeen? He was made somebody by Rajapaksa brothers. Thus he had shown his loyalty by remaining with the government and support President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Refuting this another person said “there is no other alternative for Minister Bathiudeen other than sticking to the government as his mouth remains sealed and legs  tied.

In the same way the SLMC’s inability to decide on whether to remain with the government or cross over to the opposition will have no impact on the Muslim community as the party no more represents Muslims’ desires and aspirations. Time and again the SLMC betrayed the community on many burning issues. The list is endless.

The community has already discarded the SLMC as demonstrated in the recent Uva Provincial council elections when the SLMC polled only around 5000 of the more than 47,000 Muslim votes.

Muslims in general were fed up with the SLMC for clinging to a government which provided  patronage to the saffron racist gangsters who have unleashed violence on them . These hooligans still roam around free despite their crime against the community. Shameful state of affairs is such today that these racist gangsters got the audacity to threaten Muslims of serious consequences if they fail to vote for President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

However Deputy Minister Faizer Mustapha stated, according SIRASA NEWS, at 7 pm on Saturday December 11, 2014 that  “my community is important to me and I cannot remain in politics if the government is backed by the BBS”.

However Mr. Faizer is matured enough to understand that he was part and parcel of the government which protects Bodu Bala Sena and Sinhala Ravaya whose atrocities against Muslims during the past four years remain open secret.

Muslims were not hostile to President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s government. Sizable section of the Muslim community always voted for the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. After the LTTE defeat in May 2009 Muslims in general were fully behind the government in the hope their sufferings during the ethnic war would end

Unfortunately, instead of relief, violence was unleashed on them by a small group of Sinhala extremists pitting Sinhalese against Muslims. In fact the attack on the community began even before the end of the ethnic war.

For example it began with the despicable kidnapping of Muslim businessmen by “white Van”. This crippled Muslim economy and caused untold misery to thousands of poor families depending on them for their survival. Then came the Grease Yaka” attacks on Muslim women when men went for night prayer during the Holy month of Ramadan.

This was followed by attacks on mosques, religious schools, food they consume, women’s dress code and business establishments. According to United Nations sources there were 350 organized attacks on the Muslim community. The well planned and implemented violent attacks on Aluthgama, Dharga Town and Beruwala Muslims were the worst pogrom which destroyed their residential and commercial properties and turned the once well to do Muslims paupers overnight.

Hooligans looted and emptied the buildings before setting them ablaze. The irony is perpetrators of this dastardly crime remain at large and none was brought to book.

In the midst there came the reception to Myanmar’s fascist saffron thug Ashin Wirathu who is responsible for the massacre of Rohingya Muslims. A section of Sinhala racists always predicted that an attack on Muslims in 2015 is inevitable to commemorate the centenary of 1915 Sinhala-Muslims.

Despite all these attacks and harassments the SLMC continues to cling on to the government to the embarrassment of the community. Minister Bathiudeen pledge to continue with the government while Senior Minister A.H.M. Fowzie appealed to Muslims to vote for President Mahinda and said “President Mahinda Rajapaksa had done great services to Muslims and if elected again he would do more”.

Perhaps Minister Fowzie seems to be living in another planet. Before making such a statement Minister Fowzie should visit  Aluthgama, Dharga Town and Beruwala and look into the faces and eyes of those innocent children whose fathers were slaughtered only because they happened to be Muslims.

Today Ministers Fowzie, Rauf Hakeem, Bathiurdeen, Faizer Mustapha and other shameless survivors together with sworn enemies of Muslims BBS, Ravana Balaya, Sinhala Ravaya are all in one camp.

This is the disgusting state of affairs of Muslim parliamentarians. This prompted United National Party parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella to state that “it doesn’t matter whether SLMC remains with the government or cross over to the opposition”.

All what the Muslims, living scattered all over the island, wanted is an environment where their religious freedom, their property, their businesses, their cultural and social life remain safe. They also wanted to end the ongoing disastrous anti Muslim campaign which contributed to straining relations with the majority community.

In short they are looking for a president who would ensure their rights and dignity.

Still some shameless Muslim voters will vote for BBS (= MR).

A well written article and a timely reminder for the Muslims. This election is not about different political parties, but it is about contest between right and wrong and between the good and the known evil.

All Muslims, Hindus/Tamils, Christians/Catholics and of course the Sinhalese should vote for Mr. Maithripala Sirisena who happens to be the unknown angel. The first 100 days should be considered a trial period and if one is proven wrong, they sure can vote for MR during the General elections.

A change is always good…. At least the new broom would sweep all the previous dirt and for another 6 years at least.

Fazi Mohamed – a well written and unbiased comments . As you said
people at this juncture, should use a trial and error method and if
it does not work in 100 days of power, and if the angel changed to
a devil, there is always a chance available to the people to change
the horses in the parliamentary election, which follows the Presidential election.

Treat BBS, SLMC , MedaMulana MaRa all belonging to the same group.

SLMC clout with Muslims have dropped tremendously, while hat of JVP and UNP has increased.

So, Maithi should refuse SLMC, saying that they are in bed with BBS.

There are too many Idiots who follow ISIS and ISIL.

The Islamic State has made clear its justification for the rape and enslavement of non-Muslim women and children with a color-printed pamphlet “Question and Answers on Female Slaves and their Freedom,” being distributed in Mosul.

Armed men handed out the pamphlet in the militant occupied Iraqi city on Friday after sunset prayers, several residents toldCNN on Saturday.

The document explains the terrorist group’s policy on having sexual intercourse with female slaves — even those who haven’t reached puberty — citing the Koran for justification.

(IraqiNews.com) On Thursday, Egypt’s Sunni Islamic Institute, Al-Azhar denied it said the ISIS group militants are infidels, adding that Muslim scholars should not deny someone’s faith based on their sins.

Egypt’s Sunni Islamic Institute – Al-Azhar – said in a statement published by ‘Arabiya Net,’ “Mufti of Nigeria, Sheikh Ibrahim Saleh, had not said that the ISIS group militants are infidels, but rather only described the actions made by the group as barbaric as well as far from the faith and true people of Islam.”

Al-Azhar Grand Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayyeb stressed, that Muslim scholars should not judge a person nor decree, that he is not a Muslim when that person is showing the essence of the faith – no matter how many sins they have made.

It’s better if maithri refuses to take slmc in. This will gain more votes for him.muslims should ensure good leaders in national parties and these mu and parties in the name Muslims are sent home

Yes Maithri should not entertain opportunist SLMC leaders just like not entertaining BBS. SLMC leaders duplicity was the main cause for the friction between the two communities. Maithri is assured of a large percentage of the Muslim votes even without SLMC party’s support.

I cannot understand why the Writer uses the word ‘Muslim Community’. Why can’t he use the words ‘Sri Lankan Community’. Just now I read another article that Muslim is not a race. I do not understand why they should isolate themselves. Why can’t they identify themselves as Sri Lankan community.

    • 2
      0

      thoroughly confused Lal

To reduce your confusion, the reason that muslims and tamils do not consider themselves as first and foremost srilankans is because the sinhalese consider them as second class citizens who can continue live in the country as well behaved guests as long as they don’t make undue demands. So when the sinhalese feel that they are not behaving properly and making undue demands they give them a right royal thrashing.

Until the sinhalese ditch the mahawamsa mindset and consider them as equal shareholders of the island, ethnic politics will continue.

The ball is in your court mate.Take a good hard look in the mirror and see whether there are things which you can do to improve yourself. As long as you think that something is wrong with the other fellow and nothing is wrong with you, then the problem will remain in the island.

        Shankar,
When members from all communities play in a team they identify themselves as Sri Lankans. Why can’t they have the same spirit?

        • 0
          0

          Lal

good point. However in a team if members are treated unfairly, then you find that the team spirit begins to break down.It may not be anything to do with ethnicity because i have noticed team spirit breaking down between sinhalese. So think carefully what is needed to cultivate team spirit. Now you are going on the correct direction.

There may be many factors that make a good team,i’am not a expert but some i can give using common sense are

1.There must be a common goal for all the team members.

In the srilankan context we must tell all the people in the country what the common goal is. We can say it is to make srilanka a better place to live in for us and our descendents.

2.Then we must make it clear what is expected of each and every person to achieve this goal. They must all contribute something to achieving this goal.

          3. work out ways to resolve conflicts. The moment we see a conflict between team members we have to step in and resolve it.In other words we have to be proactive, without expecting the conflict to peter out in a natural way.It does not happen like that and the problem gets bigger and bigger without going away.

Conflicts are very natural and will occur often and part and parcel of human nature when people are put in a group. We must not think that only conflicts will occur in some countries. The reason why some have and some don’t is because the lucky ones have conflict resolution processes in place.

In srilanka a superb conflict resolution process was formulated by a great man who was the chairman of the LLRC,and sadly passed away probably due to the stress of facing the music afterwards.

4.Leadership.A good leader makes a good team.Make sure that the country has the best leader to lead it.Don’t keep a leader too long after the use by date is over.A good idea would be to get rid of all these elections except only one which should be held every year in January and that is for the leader of the country only.

Let the leader appoint anyone he wants to to help him run the country without all the elections etc.He will of course have to face the people every year to get their endorsement of his policies.Increasingly leaders are doing this for example Abe.

5.communication.The country should have good communication channels open so that all the people in the country can interact with each other and communicate their ideas, problems, feelings etc. With the vast communication channels open nowadays that should not be a problem if properly organised and implemented.

so these are some of the factors i can think of to build up a good team of srilankans who will make our country a better place to live in.I’am sure there must be much more points but as i said earlier i’am not a expert, but this may satisfy your probing mind.

      Lal

Good Point. However, he is referring to the BBS targeting of that community.

The BBS did not target the Sri Lankan Community, but a sub group of that community, the Muslim Community.

When Hitler targeted, they targeted the Jews, Socialists, trade unionists, invalids, Bolsheviks, Marxists etc.

      0

He is only trying to explain what is happening in reality
I do agree that we are all one race , we are all Sri Lankans
However we do have people of many faith living in this country
for many centuries in peace but had the normal differences
like any other multi cultural society

If their is no extremists from any faith group, then we all can live in harmony
and be successful as one people of one nation and race with many faith

A government that accept’s and / or promote extremists should be defeated

the SLMC was founded by Ashraf so that he can get elected to parliament
and look what happened to him , now Rogue Hakeem is benefitting by selling
      out the Muslim community………..

This should be a no brainer for the Muslims. After the shameless murders in Aluthgama, there is no doubt, the present regime does not care one cent for the Muslim, nor their security. They are more interested in keeping their Sinhalese extremists, including the BBS, happy, and will not lift a finger to help the minorities, including the Christians. So why is Hakeem (who has been a disgrace and a disappointment) still stalling and ignoring the obvious. He seems to be looking out only for his own interests, and not of his people.

Until around 20 years ago the muslims either voted with UNP and/or SLFP and all went peacefully. SLMC was started by late Ashraff with whatever intentions has now split into 3-4 groups and we do not know how many more to come.. Why is is division amongst themselves? Is it because they love their community so much?

They have problem in dividing the cake among themselves for their personal benefit. The ordinary Muslims must now decide to dump all these opportunistic politicians and support the major parties which will do all good to them and their welfare.

Even if SLMC doesn’t join the Common Cadidate, I hope all muslim votes will go to Maithri. Since all now know about BBS Sihala Ravaya and Ravana Balaya who are like parasites on to MARA. So January 09, 2015 will be in the hands of Common Candidate. And thanks to Fazl for Options given to open the CT and Lanka E news sites.

You have done well in exposing all the fake leaderships among the Muslims for their unworthy conduct. Involvement with the despicable government has made them detestable even more.

It is good to know that the people are moving en bloc completely away from the leprous government and its familial coterie. They have come into their own developing a new self-confidence. It is now for the informal, party-less community leaders to demonstrate their weight. All Muslims must vote together and it is for the new avant garde to garner their votes at 80% for the Common Opposition candidate.

Your call comes in the wake of Tamils discarding their woeful boycott mentality in favour of voting enmasse for Maithripala Sirisena. The momentum is fast changing to reach 75% or more.

It is in this context that the CWC of Aru Thonda is cracking up to extinction. All because of faulty allegiance to the most corrupt and destruction oriented MARA despotism. From now on A.T. has no leg to stand on.

The incumbent regime’s deeds of striking terror among Tamils and Muslims have brought about a rare unity. An overwhelming force that will show its face on January 8, 2015.

    This is to Mr. Hakeem.

If Hakeem had an iota of concern for Sri Lankan Muslims, He would have resigned from the government following the aftermath of Aluthgama pogrom due to inaction of the government to prosecute the perpetrators. As a matter of fact,The perpetrators were walking in the broad day light and he could not even influence to file a case against them.

After all, he is a lawyer and politician who want to earn as much as he could while he still remains with the king.

What Hakeem did for the community was to shed a few drops of crocodile tears in the post violence interviews, that is all.

Well Mr Hakeem, we shall remember this excellent service rendered to Muslim community. Your next role should become an actor in bollywood.

It is the Muslims who beat the sinhala people first and instigated the riots.

Muslims did not stay silent in Aluthgama. they also burned Sinhala houses.

Muslims are dishonest because of that they never talk the truth.

that is how Islam train them to to lie for their benefit.

Prophet mohomad misled muslims and muslim try to mislead non-believers of Islam.

Hakeem cannot do that with the files and evidence that the Rajapaksas do posses against him. This shameful creature is taken the Muslim community on ransom and even there is 100 BBS against his community, he cannot come out other than some minor statement here and there.

Rajapaksas knowns all the weaknesses of this man a s*x maniac with the Kumari Cooray saga and few others and keep hold of the man and the Muslim community at large because of that.

See that idiot F. Mustafa saying BBS align with the govt, is this a dep Minister of the govt and a Lawyer by profession do not have an idea BBS is the Medamulana Nikaya of Rajapaksas and the Mahanayaka is none other than the Gnanasara machan who get PSD protection of 30+ for the convocation they had for the butcher of Burma when he visited Colombo.

Its better for SLMC to go with Rajapaksas and sleep together with the BBS morons and let the Muslim voters take their decision to live in a democratic country with multi party democracy or go with a regime that active promoted killings/arson/racial hatred against the Muslim community by BBS goons which was the brainchild of none other than the White van goon Big Goat.

Moreover, he being the PUPPET Minister of Justice, he couldn’t get any justice for the Muslim community in ANY of the cases.. all he could garner from the President was a quote… ” Sulu deawal walata maha loku Hartal oney nehe” translation… ” For minor incidents (like the Aluthgama scenario) there shouldn’t be Hartals” oh yeah billions of rupees lost by the community is NOT an issue of magnitude to MR.. wonder what BBS is upto these days. may be planning to get their hands on the voters list like what some Monks did in 1983…. IF that happens theres gonna be a blood bath… via the BBS and MR goons.. BUT the Muslims, Tamils and Buddhists are ready ….. to stand up n fight… NO army involvement by Gota can save the JARAPASA clan from extinction…

The prayers of oppressed Muslims has been answered by Almighty Allah… Mahinda did NOT want to lose the Sinhala Buddhist votes, thus he turned a blind eye on the Muslim and all minority issues executed via his proxies..namely BBS, Ravana Balaya and others…. God make miracles happen, now MR is losing the same Sinhala Buddhist votes that he tried to garner, thanks to MY3. MOST Muslims WILL vote for MY3, Tamils will too, UNP voters will always vote for UNP now MY3 has split the votes of the SLFP/UPFA …

MR is gonna lose big time… if he can get 40% votes it will be an achievement… Good Riddance…

      Mohamed_sq,

Well done Latheef for the courage to expose the fraudulent nature of the so-called Muslim parties and Politicians. Why have you missed Alavi Moulana. It is very necessary that you also use your journalistic talent to impress upon the Muslims that the problems that they face in the country is connected to the erosion of all democratic values which has been a development since Sri Lanka gained independence which has deteriorated to the very maximum under the MR Govt. and, therefore, the need for the Muslims to change their political thinking and engage with emerging democratic forces. The Muslims need to develop a wider perspective in politics and be concerned of issues affecting all the people of the country than their own (the Muslims’) issues. It is then that Muslims too could ensured their peaceful living in the country.

  • 2

The Muslims never seem to get the leaders they deserved. These charlatans appear elected by their goon activists whilst the majority Muslims are disenfranchised by design or choice. E.g. Muslim women hardly get a say in how their community is run and the moderates are either intimidated or just don’t bother. A solution would be a strictly postal ballot supervised by an independent body.

Thanks Latheef for your boldness to clearly spell out what we Muslims truly feel in our hearts, for our own community and our country. It takes very little to turn back the clock to 15th June 2014, to witness the hate speech made by that rowdy monk venereal Gandassara against Muslims. The poison barbed poems uttered on stage to stir up emotions to max. All planned and executed to perfection with military and police support, while the main promoters and backers of these race riots were watching developments from afar in luxury on foreign soil. This cruel government stands no chance of gaining Muslim support in any or all elections hereafter, and it will take a long time to rebuild that lost trust. We don’t need a Party in the name of SLMC or ACMU to tell us Muslims how or whom to vote as they don’t represent us Muslims nor our community. Instead we will vote for the opposition candidate or spoil our vote in disgust, since the other racist scoundrel Champuka is aligned with MY3. So it becomes Hobson’s choice for us Muslims.

As s Sri Lankan Muslim I am of the opinion that SLMC and all its various variations have done more damage to the Muslim community than anything that the BBS, JHU and the other racist parties have done. It is beyond ridiculous to read of the “High Command” making decisions on behalf of the Muslim community; while all they really doing is shamelessly gathering wealth for themselves and their cronies using Islam and Muslims as a front.

Latheef Farook is a pro UNPer, I dont take a damn of his article. But, let’s put it this way. Of course, we need a change in governance and let people decide. We should not get carried away by MR or MS assurances. It’s all same. Corruption will always exist – cost of living will always rise – what we need at this hour is “good governance”. Who will provide ????? I doubt both MR & MS.Bottom line, whoever comes to power – common man will suffer.
