Statement on the continued harassment of Ms. Sharmila Seyyid and her family
We, the undersigned would like to express our extreme distress and dismay at the incidents of harassment against Ms. Sharmila Seyyid and her family through a variety of means including social media.
In November 2012, the Tamil Radio Service of the BBC interviewed Ms. Sharmila Seyyid, a journalist and social worker from the Eastern Province. In response to a question from the BBC reporter, Ms. Seyyid had voiced the opinion that sex workers may be better protected if prostitution was legalized. This drew a significant backlash from a section of the Muslim community in the area and elsewhere prompting her to issue a clarification, in which she emphasized that she was “…only highlighting a social reality and did not intend to defy Islamic tenets”. She also expressed “regret if she had unwittingly hurt anyone’s sentiments”.
The harassment and intimidation that began in the aftermath of the 2012 interview has resulted in her having to leave the country, and continues to this day, impacting other family members as well. An article reproduced in both the Sunday Observer and the Sunday Times of Sri Lanka on the 19th of April 2015 recorded several more recent truly horrifying actions against her on the internet and also recorded renewed calls by some to condemn her for insulting and offending Islamic teachings.
While we acknowledge that prostitution is prohibited in Islam (as in many other religions), we nevertheless uphold that Ms. Seyyid is within her rights and freedoms to express her personal views; and condemn all forms of harassment, intimidation and hatred by vigilante groups and individuals that are justified based on claims to the above. While we acknowledge and respect that feelings may have been hurt and sensibilities offended, we also categorically state that defaming, harassing and inciting violence against a person for holding a different opinion, in this case a woman, is unacceptable and not within the spirit of the faith, and can also be deemed a contravention of the law. If people feel themselves to have been wronged, due process should be followed to seek redress.
This event highlights the critical need within the Muslim community, and also in the country at large, for developing processes to respond to critical issues, not through vilification, harassment or violence but through a process of dialogue that is in keeping with the law and norms of a democratic society and respectful of different faiths and ethics.
We urge the authorities to ensure that a thorough and fair investigation is conducted with regard to the complaints received by the aggrieved parties and hold those responsible for misconduct accountable. We also request that community religious leaders such as the Jamiathul Ulema take steps to halt the targeting of fellow Muslims based on spurious religious justifications. We also call upon all community leaders and civil society actors of the Muslim community to continue to play an active role in upholding the rights of every citizen.

Ms Seyyid was only expressing a humane opinion -shared by a large many.
It is well known most of these girls that reluctantly enter the sex trade do so out of extreme poverty and in the absence of economic opportunity. Today’s modern world looks into these issues through a more understanding prism. But the Islamic fundamentalists in the Eravur are have taken the law unto themselves and have forced the Seyyid’s out of the country. I believe they are now refugees in India – living under very difficult conditions. Are these the same puritanical Muslims who complain Sri Lanka is denying them justice in one thing or the other.
I hope the Govt will look into this matter and take to task all these radical Muslim thugs who have caused so much of misery to the Seyyid family.
BTW, is this the photograph of Sharmila. I saw an entirely different one in The Hindu.
I congratulate all these enlightened Muslims who have signed this Resolution fighting for the right of a fellow Muslim against religious

Fundamentalism knows no boundaries. In India, it was Perumal Murugan who announced the death of the writer in him. In Sri Lanka, writer Sharmila Seyyid was ‘raped’ and ‘murdered’ online on March 28, marking a new low in the history of intolerance. If casteist and Hindutva forces drove the writer in Mr. Murugan to death, it was fundamentalist Muslim groups who ‘killed’ Ms. Seyyid online. A seemingly real news report of the event, accompanied by a gory photoshopped picture of Ms. Seyyid’s body, went viral. Its impact was so real that her family and friends rushed to her home in shock and sorrow.

Her father Seyyid Ahmed wrote in his complaint in Eravur police station in Batticaloa in eastern Sri Lanka that there has been a concerted effort to incite hatred in the Muslim community against his daughter. Threats of kidnapping were also sent to Ms. Seyyid’s younger sister. It has become hard for the family to live in the community amidst all the rumours and suspicion, Mr. Ahmed said. He greatly fears for the lives of his daughters and their children.
The controversy
Ms. Seyyid, a single mother, journalist, activist and writer, was barely 30 when she was in the eye of the controversy that forced her into self-exile from eastern Sri Lanka. She has a graduate degree in journalism, and is the founder-president of the Organisation for Social Development, established in 2009, a community-based organisation in Eravur. On November 18, 2012, she was interviewed on BBC TamilOsai after her first collection of poems Siragu Mulaitha Penn (The woman who grew wings) was released in Sri Lanka. Justice Minister Rauff Hakeem, speaking at the event, highlighted a few of her poems, one of which one was about sex workers.
In response to a question from the BBC reporter, Ms. Seyyid said that legalising sex work would help protect sex workers. This was interpreted as endorsing prostitution, considered haram in Islam. The threatening calls began soon after. By the next morning, Ms. Seyyid had received hundreds of missed calls on her mobile phone. There were news reports that condemned her for supporting sex work and the social media joined in.
Ms. Seyyid issued a clarification explaining that she was only highlighting a social reality and did not intend to defy Islamic tenets. She expressed regret for unwittingly hurting people’s sentiments. But when clergy compelled her to retract the statement, she refused. An English academy she ran along with her sister was damaged in an attack and an attempt was made to burn it down. She fled Sri Lanka soon after, but the online world continued to watch her every move and hound her. She has been warned repeatedly for posting photographs on Facebook of herself without a purdah. When she posted a photo album of selfies with her son, she was warned for posing playfully like a ‘mendicant in penance’.
Ms. Seyyid has published two poetry collections so far. Her novel Ummath not only exposes the injustices meted out by Tamil nationalists to Tamil-speaking Muslims in Sri Lanka, but also critiques the Talibanisation of the Muslim community in eastern Sri Lanka. Both her poetry collections and her novel have received awards from the Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers and Artists Association.

Ms. Seyyid writes, “Questions about covering a woman’s face… are crying out for clarity and resolution. It is not just a question of covering a woman’s face, (but) her whole body and the clothes and accessories that embellish it are shrouded over by force. Islamic society continues to not only force its womenfolk to stay in an environment that makes no concession to contemporary realities and the liberalising trends of the times but is in fact regressing into increasing rigidity. The stand taken by Islamic fundamentalists on issues such as women’s rights is often most condemnable and quite contrary to common sense and reason. The fundamentalists, appropriating for themselves the role of guardians of the society, have set up their own illegal panchayats, making it impossible to give reality to the dignity and the rights of women that the holy book, the Koran, has taught us…. The practice of wearing a head-dress and facial veil is an Arab custom and was brought to other countries as part of commercial ventures. Our dominating men have been successful in convincing women that these commercial products are a part of Islamic culture and tradition. Islamic women have, therefore, started wearing them as symbols of their identity and also because they fear that refusing to do so would stigmatise them as unchaste, anti-Islamic and even brand them as prostitutes!”
Threats and warnings
In mid-March, an audio recording made news and was widely shared and heard online. It was of a high-ranking Tamil Nadu police officer in a lustful telephonic conversation with a woman subordinate. But the photograph that accompanied it in online reports was Ms. Seyyid’s. It is not clear if this was deliberate or merely an act of negligence. Shocked, but never one to take anything lying down, she condemned it on Facebook and, with several friends, strongly protested against the websites and social media pages that published her photograph. She succeeded in temporarily taking it off the web.
It was at this point that some Muslim fundamentalist groups from Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka and West Asia began an organised attack on Ms. Seyyid. Her photograph is now being deliberately circulated along with the audio recording; and her name defamatorily linked with the scandal. But before this the groups sent her a warning: she was to remove all of her photographs without purdah from Facebook within 24 hours. The attacks began when the warning went unheeded and ended with her ‘rape’ and ‘killing’.
Liberal Muslims are protesting loudly online. Women writers and liberal Muslim writers joined to organise a protest meeting. Under the umbrella ‘Pen Veli’, a discussion forum was launched in Chennai on March 5, to protest the continuing attacks on women by Islamic fundamentalists. The speakers categorically condemned the attempts to defame women and Islam by fundamentalist groups. The acts of such groups were condemned as anti-Islam.
Ms. Seyyid continues to be in partial hiding, fearful of her child’s safety but still bold and confident. Sri Lanka’s Criminal Investigation Department has now registered charges of cyber crime against unknown persons. Of course, the culpable persons are not confined to Sri Lanka but are spread out across India and West Asia.
In Kerala, fundamentalists of all kinds joined hands to protest the ‘Kiss of Love’ movement. In the global Tamil sphere, they appear to be acting in concert to threaten the free expression of writers and artists.
There is no clash of fundamentalists in India, but a symphony that is now reaching a crescendo, against freedom of expression and existence, which is reaching across borders.

Sharmila’s opinion on prostitution is a well considered view, targeting exploitation of young girls by middlemen and law-enforcers. Her reported views on compulsory burka is also awesome. Cannot imagine such stance by a lady from a very backward village like Eravur. She must be very intelligent and brave. She should be protected by the government at any cost. However, she also should understand the reality that she cannot live in a society while criticizing its fundamental believes. So she should move to some other accommodating and safe society rather than trying to return to Eravur.
We recently witnessed the amount of tolerance and freedom of expression in Sri Lanka when a monk was found naked and authorities almost concluded that he tied his hands himself after cutting his vital part. I do not want to read similar news that Sharmila’s self injured body was floating in Pasikuda.

Fearless and unarmed civil activist Sabeen Mahmud was savagely shot to death in her Café/Meeting room in Karachi merely for standing up to religious fundamentalism. Sabeen is one of the many Pakistani liberals who have come out to fight the diabolic plague destroying their country. Many have been killed in recent times. One of the few lucky ones being the young and articulate Nobel Laureate Malala Youseff.
It is clear Islamic radicalism has already decided to set the world in an anarchic spin – first within their own countries and then in the non-Islamic world. F.ortunately, the world has woken up to resist thiscancer – lead by Western Europe. It is good to hear the more educated in liberal Islamic societies like

Plea against Kamal Haasan’s ‘Uttama Villain’ dismissed

Justice T. Raja dismissed the writ petition, pointing out that there was no merit in the plea.
The Madras High Court on Monday dismissed a petition by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) seeking a stay on the release of superstar Kamal Haasan’s Tamil film Uttama Villain along with the deletion of a song about Lord Vishnu.
Pointing out that there was no merit in the plea, Justice T. Raja dismissed the writ petition.
According to the petitioner, the lyrics of the song had belittled a conversation between Prahlad (a devotee of Lord Vishnu) and his father Hiranyakashiu (a demon) and this hurt the feelings of the Hindu community.
The VHP had condemned Kamal Haasan and demanded a ban on the film.
It also said that if the film was released in cinemas on Friday, the whole Hindu community will be put to shame.
Directed by Ramesh Aravind, the film that features Kamal Haasan in the lead is the story of an eighth century theatre artist and a modern-day superstar.

I guess Ms. Seyyid was seeking a way to become more famous, so has chosen to comment about something, which is against any persons culture and religions. Who know that, she wanted to get sympathy from different people and [Edited out]. No one should promote sex workers and everyday we hear some brothels are captured by police in Sri Lanka and in other countries. Forget thinking of religion, but from the ethical aspects this should not be promoted at all. Think about your wife, sister, mother, daughter or some close relation involve in sex work and you get to know about it and want to punish such act. There’s another instance these not so “rich” Muslim hierarchy sat on their hands whilst a poor innocent sister, Rizana Nafeek, was being beheaded in Saudi Arabia for a crime she certainly did not commit, but under the barbaric Sharia Laws she was not worthy of a pardon as she could not pay the “Blood Money”. Muslim women are stoned to death in these Muslim countries, when raped but convicted on a charge of having sex with a man, not her husband. Concomitantly, the dependence on Blind Obedience (Taqlid) over many generations stultified the Critical Faculties of many Muslims to such an the extent that their ability and willingness to even think about issues pertaining to Islam has atrophied.
The emergence of Muslims such as Sharmila Seyyid who possess the intellectual capacity to view social issues beyond narrow religious boundaries, which is so essential if the Minority Muslim Community is to be seriously considered as an equal stake-holder in the process of building Unity and Harmony in our Motherland, is therefore extremely encouraging.
The future of the Ummah in Sri Lanka should not be left to the Politicians and Theologians. It is time that responsible members of Muslim Civil Society took charge of the process of re-building unity and harmony both WITHIN the Muslim Community and BETWEEN the Muslim and other religious Communities in the Island.

I am in no way saying muslim women in Sri Lanka are not involved in prostitution it has been identified and in several places public has been educated about the harms it bring to the whole society. Specially women who engage in the prostitution under the veil of Burka.

Already there is enough stories of underage girls being raped by gangs and passed on to few other and the get raped by the policemen who came for the rescue.Our society is not cultured enough to treat humans as humans let alone treating a prostitute.
By the way most of the housemaids once they land in another country they become available. Wonder what kind of physiological changes takes place during the flight of 4-6 hours. Is it that sense of not being caged in a false atmosphere of family/friends in Sri Lanka ? from what we can read even in Sri Lanka extra material affairs are quite common and prevalent. There is a problem it must be studied and remedial actions put in place. Here and there raiding some brothels is not going to make any difference at all.
Hopefully now that we have got rid of the dickhead ruler who was ruining our country we will have time to find solutions to pressing problems such as these.

Sharmila Seyyid has expressed her opinion frankly without causing any disrespect to Islam or any other faith. Prostitution is as old as the beginning of humanity and 95 percent of those in the trade are in it due to compelling circumstances and not by choice. Yet it is a woman’s personal choice and I cannot see any harm in this trade although it is made an illegal activity in many countries. Most religious scholars see such things wearing blinkers and may not know what is happening in their own backyard. Prostitution is not murder, robbery, cheating or any other criminal activity. They time lease a part of their property and cater to the biological needs of the opposite sex and serve the needy not the greedy.
Sharmila Sayyid has a point to ponder and an eye opener to the society at large
who look down on writers who contribute ideas of value by compulsion.

I see a spectrum of comments some emotional and some for some cause. Regardless of our emotions and dedications we should filter right from wrong. Some behaviours are flagged or restricted because of their contribution to the evil acts in society such as drugs, liquor, prostitution, casinos etc. etc. These are the breeding ground for crime and the foundation for the destruction of family values. Knowing the bad apples in the society who make use of any opportunity to capitalize, it is important for us to enact laws to curtail such opportunists. Why did the face helmet was banned?
Prostitution is illegal because of its tendency to corrupt our society, bring evil and break up families. So lets be realistic. There are many political affiliations and foreign interests behind the scene that wants to create chaos to achieve their own goals. Lets build a righteous society and keep the bad apples on leash. The fathers and mothers who have daughters can become emotional. Talk to the many wives who’s husband were caught cheating. Talk to the fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters who were hurt by their teenagers were lured away by pimps. It can knock on your own door one day. Lets be realistic and act accordingly. I humbly appeal to all who have good morals to help support a good society based on issue rather than where it come from

This statement does not support the idea that prostitution should be legalised. What it says is to ensure Shamila’s freedom to express her opinion instead of harassing her. People in her village has taken law into their hands, punishing her and her family. Who gives them the right to do so. Do all and sundry has a right to punish a person. This is mob violence and a horrendous crime. This is the problem of some of the extremist Muslims, who think they have the right to punish SELECTEDF persons in the way they they think it is fit to. What should be done is to advice her and not harass her and harass her family. No body has the right to do so. In an Islamic country, there is particular process that is followed. Though some may not agree with that procedure, but there is an established procedure even for stoning. Imagine allowing every Tom, Dick and Harry to punish someone and her family. This is barbarian and thuggery.
Quran is full of words such as Raheem and Rahman. Allah is most forgiving. She has expressed regrets and I think what should be done is to advise her.
Two three years ago there was an instance where two under 18 girls (who are children by definition) were beaten mercilessly and brought to the mosque after making a public announcement for allegedly looking at porn at a cyber cafe. Even in this case these rowdies ( who may have even looked at porn) believe that there are the moral police. If you have discussions with cyber cafe owners even in areas where Muslims constitute the majority, they would say that cyber cafes are patronised by men and boys who come there to look at porn. Have these moral police punished any other Muslim person looking at porn??? Why did they select these girls.
Islam has never told us to punish persons without first inquiring or admonishing them.
In both these cases what should have been done is to explain to these girls, why it is wrong and advise them sincerely to ask forgiveness from the Creator and not to repeat these wrongs

Prostitution is Haraam (prohibited) by divine decree in Islam. Therefore, legalizing this profession is against the divine law. If sister Shamila expressed her opinion that by legalizing prostitution we can protect those prostitutes is a fallacy. Protection of a woman is in the hands of her father, brother, husband or son. Legalizing this profession will further encourage more women to go astray believing that legal prostitution gives them protection to earn easy money..
Having said that in a democratic society like Sri Lanka she has the right and freedom for expressing her opinion. She is still young and not so matured. So she should be given the freedom to explore more on this subject for her own enlightenment. If she continues to practice the religion and learn more about the religion and the reasons behind the divine laws she will surely find out that she is wrong and repent for her public utterance of a fallacy.
She does not deserve any harassment or ridicule but rather counseling by learned sisters like former BBC journalist Yvonne Riddley or Dr Marina Riffai who can reason with her and make her understand the gravity of her public statement which is against the divine decree. Even those eminent personnel who are the signatories above to support her freedom of speech can discuss this matter with her and advise her to be modest in making such public pronouncement against the divine law.
In my opinion we should not hate or antagonize our own sister for her ignorance but sympathize with her and help her to clear her misunderstanding regarding the religion.

Agree with you, but she is not a lil kid..she is mature enough to write poems and talk about prostitution..it saddens me that her father is in support of this. If you have unprotected anal sex you run very high risks of infecting people with HIV if you are promiscuous and sleep around. anal sex and unprotected sex is the main cause of HIV spread in Sri Lanka. I respect openly gay ministers with those who marry because they had to maintain an image and because they were forced by their mothers for seeking high office. It is a danger only if they have sex with their wives but if they are just trophy wives there is no danger. But if you are promiscuous and have unprotected anal sex in the cabinet or outside with multiple partners you run the risk of catching HIV.
