What Is National Security For Rajapaksa(s)?

By S. V. Kirubaharan

S. V. Kirubaharan

S. V. Kirubaharan

I am one of those who believed that bringing back Mahinda Rajapaksa as President was the only way forward for the people in the North and East to find a durable political solution – with the support of the International Community, especially the help of India. I wrote extensively on this subject during the last Presidential election.

It is crystal clear that President Maithripala Sirisena won the Presidential election with the overwhelming support of Tamils in the North, East and the upcountry – obviously Muslims as well. The fact of the matter is that although Tamils are a numerical minority, they are capable of determining the political future of Sri Lanka. It was proved not only in the last Presidential election but also on several other occasions since independence. The Sinhala racist parties and individuals like the Rajapaksas in the South are well aware of this and are paranoid because of it!

Since losing the Presidential election, Rajapaksa has said on many platforms that it was because of Tamil votes that he was defeated. Anyone who listened to Rajapaksa’s speeches during the Presidential campaign and on another occasion in Jaffna will realise that he is an arrogant racist.

Since the new regime came into power, the international community has been watching their activities and progress closely. Former Parliamentarian and member of the Northern Provincial Council Mr Sivajilingam said in one of the NGO briefings in the last (28th) session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, that the present regime has made some ‘cosmetic’ changes in the North and East. However on the basis of recent information we receive from the North and East, we will agree that since the new regime came into power, aggressive activities (arrest, detention, rape, murder, land grab, etc) have decreased, compared to what the tyrant Rajapaksa’s regime did to the people in those areas.

Mahinda GotaLand grabs carried out by Rajapaksa’s regime in the North and East have not been practiced by the present regime. But the wrong-doing of the tyrant regime in the past has still not been rectified. There is still a long way to go.

Rajapaksas shedding Crocodile tears

Defeated Rajapaksa now talks about so-called ‘national security’. The person who allowed his family members to draw fortune from public funds is talking about ‘national security’! After all, Rajapaksas ruined the wealth of the country; he has now found a trump card – ‘national security’. This must be the ‘joke of the year’ or ‘century’.

As far as the Rajapakas are concerned, national security means, the people in the North and East should be harassed, raped and killed, also religious places like mosques, churches and temples should be set on fire by hooligans. However, there is a long way to go before one can consider the present regime as promoting good governance and following democracy norms.

According to the information that we are receiving – the innocent parents and family members of ex-cadres of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam – LTTE are to a certain extent living peacefully after many years. Under the earlier regime, they were harassed to the maximum.

However, the power-crazy Rajapaksas are still trying to do their bankrupt politics by bringing up the name of the LTTE. This is to gain sympathy and votes in the South. They are using the LTTE as their scapegoat to avoid the corruption charges made against them.

In other words, as the Rajapaksas lived alongside inflicting sorrow and blood-baths in the North and East, they expect the present regime to do the same, in the name of ‘national security’. Some fools in the South are also supporting the Rajapaksas, driven by the ambition of getting a high post, in the event that Rajapaksa comes to power again.

I am not denying that there are some Ministers in the present regime who are also capable and would be happy to do all this too. But as the present regime is answerable to the international community they are moving carefully.

It’s very sad that it took such a long time for the International community to understand Rajapaksa’s attitude. It was an utter lie that Rajapaksa’s regime rescued the Tamils from the “clutches of the LTTE”! If this were true, then why was tyrant Rajapaksa spending so much on Sinhalalisation, Buddhisation and Militarisation and keeping more than 200,000 soldiers in the Jaffna peninsula alone?

13th Amendment and India

During the peak hours of the war and end of the war, Rajapaksa told the international community, especially India that his government would give more than 13th amendment, the “13 plus”, to the people in the North and East. Since the end of the war, Rajapaksa was in power for nearly six years with a two third majority in parliament. During this period what did he do about the root causes of discrimination and oppression and the six decades of bloody ethnic conflict? Under his orders more and more innocent people were ‘disappeared’, killed, raped, arrested and tortured.

While Rajapaksa continued to give bogus promises to the international community and especially to India, his lobbyists were making use of India. For example, some with the earlier regime supported the 13th amendment and possible Indian negotiations, but presently, they are totally against it. One, who won a pro-Sri Lanka resolution with the help of India in the UN Human Rights Council – UN HRC in June 2009, recently said that India can’t be a mediator any longer, in Sri Lanka!

At the same time another who claimed India to be their main friendly country to African and Asian states, thus gaining their support in the UN HRC, recently said that India can’t force Sri Lanka to implement the 13th amendment.

Does this mean that both expect China, Cuba or Venezuela to be negotiators or to demand Sri Lanka implement the 13th amendment? Then neither of them knows the history of the 13th amendment. Racist thinking is deep in their hearts, even if it doesn’t show in their pen and voice!

Hope Indian decision-makers will make a note of what is being said and what is happening today regarding the 13th amendment in Sri Lanka. To my knowledge, India is being taken for a ride by all governments in Sri Lanka.

Conclusion

A few reasonable questions are being asked by some political analysts and Members of Parliament belonging to TELO, one of the political parties in the Tamil National Alliance – TNA. The analysts ask why there is a delay in investigating – Karuna, Pillayan, Iniya Bharathy and Douglas for their involvement in many murders, intimidation, bribe and corruption. There is enough evidence – so lack of evidence can’t be a reason. Furthermore, TELO made a statement on 24th April 2015 that the present regime has not made a start on even fundamental needs of Tamils.

On the evening of Saturday 18th April 2015, after 11pm, I was followed by a stranger, a Sri Lankan in the Paris Metro (underground train). He told me that it was him who was assigned by the Sri Lankan embassy in Paris to ‘deal with me’. He proudly told me that, as he was not interested, he let me off the hook! This incident took place in front of two other. The important question is, whether this person was assigned by the earlier or the present regime? Whoever holds this ambition should realise that ‘I am not an orphan’!

Hope, President Maithipala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Ex-President Chandrika Kumaratunga will make a note of all this.

A person should have a very good knowledge in drama to understand what is really happening in our cuntry at present. We may oberve a person really does an act wchich we realy see him doing it while he may have no interest at all to do it. The next moment he does an act to give just the opposte results under same conditions. We cannot understand the meaning of the words of some of the veteran professionals at times not mainly due to very serious English in them. A person does an act we could never perceive to be done by him according to his past behaviour.People in a system may perform work below their acceptable normal performance level making important mattres rather confused. Two similar professionals, veterans on the same subject give opposite views on a seriously important matter leaving us in an ambiguous state of perception. When there are two persons with almost similar power many of our people may respect the person who most pressurise them by depriving them even to speak regarding an issue may be related to their children’s future rather than the person who looks aside when he was unduely disgraced through public media due to his humble personality and really his non violent nature.Priests are forcibly entering to the high security zone demanding not to question a person who is charged for corruption. There are a list of wonders that could not be defined with my limited knowledge.

I am also one of those who called upon the Tamils to abstain from voting, without any pre-conditions.

Why be part of a system that did not respect our basic human rights, even after the war ended six years.

The Tamils had the best opportunity to express to the International Community that after 66 years of subjugation, pain and sorrow, we want to be left alone.

The world’s spot light was on shaky Mahinda in the ring and Sri Lanka, and we voted knowing very well that the heat from the IC on pro west Sri Lanka will be lifted under MS, RW CBK, and the UNHRC resolution will be derailed.

Cosmetic changes will happen to make believe, but the pain and suffering for the Tamils will continue and to further demoralise the Tamils into submission. Why complain now.

It is a pity the Tamil Leaders are still refusing to understand that after 66 years going around in circles, the racist majority Singhalese will never ever give equal rights to the Tamils.

Tamil justice, accountability and freedom to live in peace with dignity can only be achieve with the involvement and engagement of the international community to sit with us, and for that the local Tamil and Diaspora leadership need to unite with one voice, and call for a referendum for the Tamils to decide their future destiny.

The local leadership need to be honest to themselves, and not prolong the pain and sufferings, home grown solution is never possible, they won the war, and we need peace.

Winning The War Is Not Establishing Peace – then WHAT?

Manicka Vasagar, I presume that you, the Minister of Foreign Affiars of the so called Trans National Government of Tamil Eelem.

I have hundreds of question about your myth party or organisation. Let that to the side.

Have you heard of the latest? A few diaspora Tamils who in association with the new government have travelled on others expenses and had luxurious holiday in Singapore and in India.

This how every SL government is fooling us?

Diaspora who went for this meeting is not from people organisation. That is an organisation earning for publicity and show game.

If you have heard of this meeting, what action have you taken as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Trans..

If you have written any letters concerning this matter to the join coordinators of these meetings, Norway, Switzerland and South Africa, can you publish it.

To me, so far only the TNA have the mandate of the Tamils.

Also for your information, it is believed that TNA Sumanithiran has compiled this list of diaspora because they were his school mates.

In such scenario, can this new government deliver any political solution to the Tamils.

The diaspora who went for this meeting are TRAITORS.

Their names were never during the freedom struggle.

Now it is over to you, Mr. Manicka Vasagar.

It’s best you ask your friend to divulge who attended, why and what was agreed, and to be open and transparent. The victims of war have the right to know where are they leading us to?

As I said above, the Tamil problem can only be resolved by the Tamils collectively with a united voice, for an acceptable, credible solution.

We don’t want to be cheated and fooled again and again, and hope the mandate given is not to “sell out” our legitimate right to self determination, without consultation with the people. Let a referendum decide our future, not close door meetings. We are all concerned.

Mr. Manicka Vasagar, my questions are straight forward and you are not answering it.

          (1) If you have heard of this meeting, what action have you taken as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Trans…?

          (2) If you have written any letters concerning this matter to the join coordinators of these meetings, Norway, Switzerland and South Africa, can you publish it?

If you have not done any of these, you must be ashamed to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Trans..

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Transnational (Carnival) Government of Tamil Eelam, you better resign. You are inefficient and useless.

Give this job to someone who can play better roll in your Carnival.

            Alfred,

We , as well as other Tamil Diaspora groups not invited have expressed our disappointment to the coordinators and sponsors. We are told that the Singapore meeting was organised by the GoSL and have invited SELECTED allies in the Tamil Diaspora and TNA to a “Dialogue on Promoting reconciliation and strengthening of democracy in Sri Lanka”.
This after 66 year history and 6 years after the war. Suggest you sort more informations from the special attendees.

As the title suggest, may be we didn’t fit !

We would like to keep our affairs open and transparent, but it is unethical for us to release correspondence between third parties.

It is nothing to be ashamed of, as a volunteer activist, belonging to a group, for human rights, justice, accountability, for the victims, our people and for our homeland, for a peaceful permanent political solution.

          • 1
            1

Alfred stops bullying a respected person, our beloved Hon. Minister Manicka Vasagar.

The persona non grata who participated in these meeting were

Suren Surenthiran of GTF who is always for Name and Fame
            Ram, Suren’s cheap catcher.
EROS Kugan who has his roots with leftist in Sri Lanka.

To our knowledge, Suren and Ram were selected by Sumanthiran and endorsed by their recent pal Mangala Samaraweere.

EROS Kugan name was proposed by leftists in Sri Lanka.

For members of the GTF, taking photograph is their important agenda.

They are not bothered whether there is a political solution to the Tamils or not. GTF and their members are new comers to any political work concern to Sri Lanka.

They don’t have much knowledge of these affairs.

All these people will gradually be out of politics, like Ice in a hot sunny day.

Shame on GTF and their members.

So You were one of the Tamil Half-Mootals who wanted to boycott the Presidential elections. However, you will be held in great Esteem, if you Prevented the Tamil Mootals from voting for Mahinda Rajapaksa.(approx 25% of Tamils). So you wanted to play the same Mootal Game Mahinda Rajapaksa Played with VP to get MR Elected? Sorry, you failed, thanks to the Tamils with Common Sense.

However, one wonders how many would have voted for Maitripala Sirisena in order to defeat Mahinda Rajapaksa.

However, one should be thankful to ALL Tamil, Muslim , Sinhala , Muslim , Malay and Burgher Voters with COMMON SENSE for Voting OUT Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Corrupt Family Dictatorship and voting for the Common sense Candidate Maitripala Sirisena.

    Dear Mr. Kirubaharan,
“Furthermore, TELO made a statement on 24th April 2015 that the present regime has not made a start on even fundamental needs of Tamils.”
Same We want to highlight with you:
    1. Pipe born Drinking Water 2. Compensation and help for damaged Houses (specially in islands eg.Kayts)3. A proper jetty to house large trawlers on eastern cost of Jaffna (from VVT to Kokilai nothing available) 4. Better Public Health Services and Dental Care services for districts of Mannar, Kilinochchi, Mulaitive. (there is a Dental Doc in Cabinet as Minister of Health) 5. Government jobs for educated unemployed.
Can write till cows come home but are we demanding these specifically form the Central Government?
We expected Hon. Mr. Vigneswaran to get these done but what he do is issuing emotional statements and plying back and forth Colombo Jaffna.
For the past 66 years this is what happening. Cant all the politicians in North get together and hold the Central Government for ransom demanding the above in next election.
Please remember 20% of Northern votes went to MR in last election and do not tell me those 20% are stupid. Face the reality and above are the present necessities.
    Think objectively why Camaroon, Miliband,
Solheim etc. so keen on talking all resolutions only, to divide you and us. Reason our Sri Lankan bothers and sisters registered in their electorates as voters. You may have many scars in your heart and our humble apologizes (only what we can do) but that doesnt mean our people in Jaffna should suffer without basic facilities. Think what is priority the punishment for MR or Basic facilities for the commoner.
Last not least visit Sri Lanka please and see what is happening with your own eyes. We are traveling all over the country on business purposes and the cheapest TEA BUN was bought from the bakery next to Kayts police station just twelve rupees. Do not know you can remember what tea bun is but it is just to encourage you.

    Mr Kirubahran
Sir, let me remind you there are heaps of psuedo journalist that proclaim tp have insider information, re: crimes, injustices committed by Mahinda Rajapakse, I agree he had the opportunity to improve the status of Tamils in North and East, not only Tamils moslems too. Would appreciate if you look back at the political culture among Sri Lankan politicians, Sinhala, Tamil, Moslems they all are bedvilled with the same dogma and obstructions in implementing the good policies that will benefit the peopleof Sri Lanka, this is not an excuse for MR or any politician, we as Sri Lankans need to change our expectations from our politicians and they must be held accountable for failing to implement policies preached by them, change of government is not sufficient, we the population of Sri Lanka should be able to place people of highest integrity, the system should allow such people to be in cabinet and be supported to implement policies that does not discriminate against any race, religion, region. I have to be honest our current government will not and cannot implement any fair and equitable poloicies.

Many Tamil diaspora people are like parasites for their living country because they disguise themselves as innocent, very democratic, and law abiding citizens of present living country. The native people in that country never realize how much they earn through unofficial businesses and play with tax loopholes. In addition, buy politicians to voice on be half of them to intimidate legitimate government in power. Once the time come they will claim territorial claims in the country they living present.

You said you are not orphan, but for me you are orphan because you purposely exaggerate the situation for example alleging government for rape, torture, and disappearance. Why are you not discussing LTTE atrocities? next, do you think man tasked to follow someone will divulge the story to his target. for me this is another silly trick to gain some personnel benefits from present government in sri lanka or from the country that this author is living in. I agree that they were very close with India and achieved what they all wanted via the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Your article is dwelling in the past as usual. Get a life, the elections are over, a new govt is in power and hopefully will do better where everyone is concerned.
Tamils and Moors did not bring in the new government, “The people of sri lanka did”. Sri lankans brought in the new govt.
isnt it time everyone started looking at it that way?
If not for former Pres: Rajapakse we would have never got rid of that murderer VP.
People like Mr V.Muralitharan(karuna amman) assisted in destroying the LTTE and are therefore given amnesty, this happens during war. So get over it.
Instead of writing all this crap , urge your CM of the NP to get on with his job, create employment, build houses for the poor etc:
right now he appears to be doing jack shit other than antagonizing the govt in power.

A confused article. We all know that Tamils were a terrorised, oppressed and silenced community under the Rajapaksa regime. The new government appears to be doing something to ease some of that. However, the government cannot go too far to ease the lives of Tamils as due to the entrenched mindset of the Sinhalese, any improvements to Tamil lives is a vote loser amongst the Sinhalese.
Additionally, the west and India who are backing the new government will obviously put their national interests ahead of anything else even if that means only paying lipservice to Tamil interests as they have done so in the past.
Only the elected reprentatives of the Tamil people can truly put the interests of the Tamil community first. Mr Sampanthan and Mr Sumanthiran, please take note, you represent the Tamil people.

Richard Kaz, you are neither Singhala nor a Tamil.

In other words you were writing this comment without a backbone.

So how to take you seriously?

You are also trying to do divide and rule in your comment, giving some clue to Mr Sampanthan and Sumanthiran.

They both knew your hypocrizy. So it is too late for your comment to take it to their consideration.

Rather behaving like a fool throug out your life, at least one day try to be a person with common sense.
