In many ways today’s Sri Lanka is an Orwellian comedy. The Head of State and his cohorts will decide what is good for the people – not merely economically and politically. But within your households too. It shall not be long before we have Thought Police too – like in beloved North Korea. The day is about to arrive when, like in those jokes about the earlier Soviet Russia, it is not the citizen who will be watching TV with the family but the regime that watches and listens to you – electronically.

Once more MR proves his drama of visiting a Puswedilla show with his bootlickers, to give the impression he is such a fine democrat he has the sense of humour to laugh at himself, is a hollow exercise. Naturally, this outrage will be followed by the top in the regime claiming they have nothing to do with the ban.

      Backlash,

      I agree with you.

Sri Lanka is now officially under a tyrannical, medieval system of governance.

This ban proves just how nervous the corrupt ruling clan, their cronies & henchmen are. So neverous, they are even scared of comedians.

We are the Belarus of Asia!

      Cheers!

Indeed the Rajapassa brothers and sons are FRIGHTENED: The CHOGM show has back fired and exposed Rajapassa – both to the SInhalaya Modayas within the debacle of Asia and international community.
The SPIN and the SPIN doctors no longer work – so the ban on political satire has kicked in.. Just check out the security that Mahinda Rajapakse, Gota the Goon and the brothers, sons and related bastards of the regime need to feel safe – the bullet proof convoys they ride in – and you know that Sri Lanka’s MACBETH does not SLEEP – too many ghosts hanging about in the bushes. Paranoid Gota fears trees and has cut down all the big trees that line the roads of Colombo (except in the military cantonment at Thummulla) and destroyed all shrubbery because he FEARS ghosts of souls he murdered and the LTTE bogey men may be lurking to take him out!
The uneducated and uncultured, criminal thugs called the Rajapakse family and its cronies are realizing that all good things come to an end and time is running out for them as the forces of opposition rise and the Sinhalaya Modaya wakes up to their corruption and criminality.

Unfortunately many sinhalayas, (not of the modaya kind) will have to agree with Don Stanley

This is what Nonis said – “We cherish the principles of democracy and development — the twin pillars of the Commonwealth, We are a very decent, very human group of people. We’ve had a terrible conflict with the terrorists — finally the people of Sri Lanka are free.”

Sri Lankans should sort their differences with the Rajapakshes at the election. Until a war crimes probe is initiated against US/UK for the IRAQ invasion there cannot be a one against us for a war waged for self defense. and stop this pathetic Nonis bashing just bc you can’t counter his arguments.

        • 4

No one wants to counter his stupid arguments – no one important bothered to interview him !

Point of View you are correct.

All what Nonis did was to rattle off Rajapaksa bilge in posh English.

Deliberately aiming for and slaughtering tens of thousands of civilians, including children, is anything but self-defense.

          Liberal One:
Nonis deserves to be bashed because he is LYING mouthpiece for the b…s who are dictating to us.
Why don’t you set what Point of View has quoted in Nonis’s speech against the reality of the first North Korea in the Indian Ocean?

            1

If Nonis is that smart, he should face that Sumanthiran and his fair questions in terms of the course of LLRC implementations.
It is a great challenge actually. Just to face superficial questions made by such moderators, he is fine. But if everyone would realize, that nothing much is done in terms of LLRC… looking at its course sofar.. there, Mr Nonis would have to admit and look down

“Puswedilla is not just an indictment of the local political system but also an exposé of western hypocrisy.“Just because countries like Sri Lanka depend on foreign aid, countries like the US attempt to impose a different set of morals on us. But they – the US, the European Union and the UN – themselves are morally corrupt. The US has a lot of human rights abuses to account for. They have lost the moral right to police the rest of the World,”

        -Feroze Kamardeen, Director of Puswedilla.

3 things re what Nonis’ said

        1. Nonis should have qualified the ‘we’ with “we, ‘the ordinary people of SL’,cherish the principles of democracy and development…..”.

        2. Judging by the way the average srilankan in general and professionals in particular behaves and conduct him/her selves no can believe the “We are a very decent, very human group of people”!

        3. Nonis is very right in the about the terroist/conflict part of his statement – unfortunately, we,’the ordinary people of SL’ are NOT FREE – we now have another set of terrorists – who our sinhala modayas have elected.

Was there on Saturday as an old Thomian and after seeing Mr Gunaratne’s hilarious performance just before the Pusswedilla crew came on, it really would have summed up a great night if they did. I hope the government change their stance after all I heard they approved all their previous performances without alteration so I don’t understand why all of a sudden. But really the fact that people are trying to suggest that this is typical Sri Lanka is ridiculous. I mean imagine the censorship that would be in place in Britain if Channel 4 did a documentary on the Royal Family’s living off the tax payer!

What rubbish. The tabloids in England have published pictures of Prince Harry naked in vegas on their front pages.

    • 5

      How do you know that?
The people in the UK are well known for their trait to laugh at themselves.
Have you have heard of Rory Bremmner and his side splitting witticisms often aimed at the Royal Family;the CH4 which telecasts it has no Censor Board breathing down it’s neck, because that country happily is not under an Orwellian gaze.

Rajan, Firstly it is not realistic to compare the British Royalty which has earned the respect of the people over hundreds of years with an uneducated family of murderous dictators who loot an entire country.

Secondly, it is not correct to say there is no media coverage which criticises the British Royal family. The thing is we who live in SL are not exposed to the type of journalism prevailing in democratic countries.

Rajan either you are misinformed or you trying to mislead by saying that
“I mean imagine the censorship….living off the tax payer!” The govt of UK and the media has a very clear guide line regarding censorship… your said comment is like trying to compare between apples and oranges

Your an idiot Rajan, be it UK or Sri Lanka, censorship is censorship, don’t mention crap like ‘imagine’ about Britain, blah, blah.. It’s people like you that keep these Regimes going on and on with your stupid mind set..

Have you ever watched UK tv? British press makes more jokes on theie politicians and royal family than any country in the world. Channel 4 is one of the biggest culprits…

I thoroughly enjoy their brand of humour. MR & his band of brothers cannot handle the truth. In a way this is a blessing. Any time something is banned it becomes more popular. They can now take a break and come up with more funny material. This regime’s taste is the feeble attempt at humour by that Hudson Samarasinghe who spew out venom on SLBC, after pirith chanting.. Puswedilla and team hope to see you soon on stage.

Pusswedilla Part 4.1 and more should go on. This is our request and not the rulers to decide.

Mountains don’t shake when a dog bark. Only those who are scared and those who are Political cowards that are feared of facing the truth.

Come what may, either they should prefer to face locally….or face International justice. All depends on their choice.

Keep profermancing Pusswedilla and bring in more humor to the world.

Censor Board can ban the Puswedilla comedy
that comes on the board of Lionel Wendt.

But they cannot ban the Puswedilla tragedy
that plays out in the Rajapaksa Government
    and Ranil Wickremsinghe’s opposition. That
    comedy goes on every day.

See for example the latest trustworthy to be
moved out – the unshakeable Lakshman Hulugalle,
a lover of sawn timber. He was the most trusted
man. Now like the Christine Keeler affaire of
    yester years he stands exposed.

Take the case of Vass Gunawardena. The same thing
has happened. He was so trusted and given all
kinds of special jobs. He became an expert and
    went to do private practice.

So, the so called trusted men are falling one
after another. Yet, nothing will happen to them
    nor their assets.

This is yet another drama staged by Puswedilla crew. We saw how they created an artificial que for tickets when Al-Jazeera came to report about them.

Puswedilla is a drama popular only among Colombo up market society. Government or MaRa mightn’t give a shit about what these Colombo 07 jokers do. Alas his votes aren’t gonna affect by Puswedilla’s miniscule audience in Colombo.

This is just a publicity stunt by the writer to draw attention for their next Lionel Wendt release.

Oh, BTW before anyone jump into any conclusion. No, I don’t work for MaRa. But I know how politics in Sri Lanka works. That politics includes the marketing politics played by people like Puss. There is a resistance towards MaRa government in Colombo and Puss writer is cashing out on it. Behind the scene he is a close friend of both MaRa and Ranil. That part, most of his fans doesn’t know. Why would MaRa ban a play written by one of his best buddies?

You make sense Citizen, I’m not really sure how that industry works? Do these people have to get prior approval to perform these shows?

Anyway I have a simple moto these days, “Don’t Believe the Hype”, because in every story it goes deeper than what we normally think or get informed on.

Let’s not get overly excited about yet another exercise of Royal Prerogative. For those who have long memories, Sri Lanka was once a democracy where political satire was not only accepted, it was welcomed. Now………… this kind of thing only serves as an excuse for magnanimity by our Sinhala Buddhist God, that’s all, and provides a second-rate writer of comedy with yet another opportunity of genuflecting in thanks before His Ruler!
