Parliament turned into a mini battle field this afternoon, after Government and Joint Opposition Parliamentarians clashed over the withdrawal of military security of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The clash resulted in several MPs receiving injuries, while UNP MP Sandith Samarasinghe was rushed to the Accident Service after sustaining injuries, and Speaker Karu Jayasuriya suspending Parliament for 5 minutes due to the tense situation, which erupted as Minister Sarath Fonseka made a speech in parliament over the withdrawal of Rajapaksa’s security. Later, Jayasuriya postponed the Parliamentary sessions for tomorrow.
The military security provided to Rajapaksa was withdrawn yesterday, and replaced with police personnel. Before the withdrawal, Rajapaksa had a security detail of 102 personnel, which included five Army Majors and 45 Commandos.

Ben, it was one of the most disgusting and shocking episodes ever seen inside parliament. It could not have been worse.
The complete lack of control shown by the Speaker was also shocking. I think this speaker is a very weak one. He needs to go.
Please have a look at parliamentary sessions in the UK and the manner in which EVERYONE respects the speaker’s verdict. We are a million years away from getting there, and we need to show concern.
It is my belief that we – as citizens – have the right to demand that these people in Vavula suits and “national dress” behave themselves before trying to legislate on our behalf.

I noticed that several people mentioning that it was not MR but the army under the leadership of SF defeated the LTTE terrorists. It is true that MR did not go to the battle field with a AK 47. The army and Sarath Fonseka were there when JRJ was the President, when Premadasa was the President, when Ranil was the PM, when Chandrika was the President but could not defeat the LTTE terrorists. I have no idea how he did it but the fact is that MR managed not only to defeat the LTTE terrorists but even to eliminate Prabhakaran who is responsible for killing thousands of innocent men, women and children and the members of the armed forces despite the pressure exerted on him to spare his life. There were Pandits from Western countries who kept on saying that LTTE is so strong that it cannot be defeated using military means. But MR proved that they were wrong.
Also there are some who say that crushing LTTE is a result of collective effort and therefore should not give the credit to MR. Some say civil societies forced him to take action. There is a saying ‘You can take the horse to water but you cannot force the horse to drink water’. I am sure the pressure was there even to other Presidents and PMs to end the war but they failed to do that.
I hear MY3 keeps on saying that I risked my life and left the government to contest as the Common Candidate. And there are people who praise him for taking that bold decision. I say MR not only risked his life but risked the lives of his whole family when he took the bold decision to crush LTTE. Those who say that now there is peace and no threat to his life have no idea about the ground realities.
I have no problem taking MR to task if he has looted the country. If we are doing that ‘Choura Regina’ also should be taken to task. Victor Ivon has very vividly explained how she looted my country. I am also curious why these people who try to create this image that MR is ‘Hora’ do not talk about the film ‘Great Bank Robbery’ in which the main actors are Ponil, Rakaru and Arjun. People should make noise about this more than other things because this happened under the name ‘Yaha Palanaya’ that promised to eradicate corruption. MR eradicated terrorism but these guys cannot tackle even a simpler thing than that. NATO (No Action Talk Only). MY3 talk only. Oh! sorry. He said he will take tough action and he did. Removing the army personnel that was assigned to provide security to MR. Really that is a bold decision and we should give credit for that to MY3.

Any leader, whatever his/her achievement is deemed to an ordinary citizen once he/she rescind all his/her responsibility. A security detail of such person is derived from many variables. But that is not equivalent to the present leaders, whose lives are important to the country’s normal functioning. There is reluctance to accept this from the Old Royal supporters. At the start or the after loss of election, Old King accepted that time Opposition Leader’s Ranil’s assurances of saving him from UN electric Chair and handed him over the Temple Tree House. (Temple Tree house was the President’s residential house that time. Ranil was not the elected prime minister or elected candidate for presidentcy that time. DM was the Prime Minister and New King was the elected Presidential Candidate.) It is customary that past leaders are given elevated level of protection which ordinary citizens do not receive. Lankawe situation is unique. The past leader abandoned his honorary status and acquired a regular M.P. position in the opposition in parliament, though his party is still in power. (It is noticeable, even when UNP was in the Opposition, Dudley did not sit on the oppositions Leader Chair, only because his father had held an honorary place in the country) That is a personal decision he made to berate his importance.(It can also be said as hiding under a camouflage until a new power struggle materialize-An action against the country he served). Then he has to expect downgraded security suitable for the position which he voluntarily undertook – an ordinary M.P. in opposition. Though the predictions are citing the next November, 2016 Presidential election of U.S, as long as a strong government is present in U.S, Old King is unlikely to accept any senior position in the government, including the Opposition Leadership. So far he has been very reluctant to dance quickly to the promoting cronies and have him extradited to a war crime investigation.
Neither Prime Minister nor the President of the country has accepted the notion of security of leaders is in jeopardy. One has to assume that their decision is coming from the evaluation submitted to them periodically by the defense personnel. If somebody claims that they have better information on the security issues, it is matter for suspicion of their sources and how are they obtaining these superior information.
The recent arrests of the accused rebels have been not to knowledge of Colombo, because when every time it was questioned they has to check back of the situation and let know the inquirer. If any of these matters raised by the Joint Opposition is real or substantial issue, then the security personnel should have convinced the Colombo leadership about their finding rather than leaking it first to Joint Opposition, then public from them and the government as the last. As per the claims of the Joint Opposition, without Colombo leadership coming to know, the previous regime is getting a premium update of the security situation. This indicate the democratically elected government has a weak point on its own security rather the any past president’s or ministers’ and it is not from any external activities, the threat is coming from the internal security itself.
The previous government had staged many murders. Some of them are under investigation investigation. Some of them are assured by the current government no to be opened for investigation. The past regime had operated white van and grease monster gangs. It staged Aluthgama, Weliweriya, over and about the mass murders in Mullivaikal and other areas. In addition to all these, the Camp had made ready to launch a coup on the night of Jan 8th. Knowing these, America got involved in to ensure the power change as per the election result, not by coup. The machinery and the frame used to carry these out were not dismantled when the Old King was chased out Temple Tree House. This is the one used put the Gobi Drama in Nedunkerny and forced his wife abort at hospital. As the frame was not weakened by the Yahapalanaya Government, it is mulling to continue where it was let on the January 8th night, the aborted coup.
When the Yahapalanaya government started to relax the security tightening and let country to return normalcy, this gang grabbed the opportunity and creating tensions. It influenced from the “Suicide Jacket Finding” through TNA member Sivaharan arrest too.
Internal coups are not completely new to Lankawe. Bandaranayake Murder is part of it. Sirimavo was targeted. Rajiv Gandhi was attempted. Athulathmudali and Kathirgamar are additional cases.
As this has happened inside of the Parliament, the UNP M.P. is safe now at hospital. But the Government should be alert and should jealously guard it members as another one like this not to happen.

All this is political games by both sides. There was no reason for the government to remove MR’s security by army but at the same time JO’s claim that some PCs were assigned to MR’s security is bogus. STF is as elite a group as army commandos.

It is the duty of the government to protect MR and Gotha. MR is still immensely popular among masses. Kirulapana rally would show you that. My question: what’s the comparative cost to provide army protection vs STF protection for the Ex-president? If there is no much difference let him have it because that’s what he expects from the country! It is the duty of the current government to protect those who brought in peace to the country by defeating terrorism. This includes Sarath Fonseka and Air and Navy chiefs as well. There is no point in comparing the current president’s security with that of the ex-president. There is no need to argue like kindergarten kids on this matter anymore since Yahapalana leaders should not waste their valuable time and space like they do now in parliament and outside.
If I were the PM or the Prez I would allow MR to keep his Army security, and I would concentrate my total energy and time on vital national issues that the country is facing now! That’s what the general public expects from the 2 Yahapalana leaders!
