Ranatunga Brothers Sail In To Port

By Sarath de Alwis

Sarath de Alwis

Above all, don’t lie to yourself. The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to a point that he cannot distinguish the truth within him, or around him, and so loses all respect for himself and for others” – Dostoyevsky in ‘Brothers Karamazov’

Those are my principles, and if you don’t like them… well, I have others” – Groucho Marx

Good Governance Go by the Board. Ranatunga Brothers have sailed in to Port. The morals of cricket are gone. Lunacy of the sport lingers on. The crowd pleasing, crowd drawing capacity of cricketers can get them elected. When elected, they leave behind ‘fair play’ and ‘level playing field’ on entering parliament.

Fairness implies treating everyone equally and impartially. Fair play in Cricket is to conduct oneself in accord with the spirit of the sport.

Arjuna’s shameless appointment of brother Dhammika as the head of the Ports authority under the purview of his own ministry confirms that the morals of the game are extinct in the empty barn under the thatched roof of silvery hair.

True. Cricket in this country has fallen prey to practitioners of ‘win or place’ for some time. Turf accountants have taken over the score board and that is unlikely to change.

Gone are the days when we condemned public impropriety with the phrase “It’s not cricket”. Cricket has ceased to be a gentleman’s sport. In Sri Lanka today, Cricket it only an entrée in banquets of politics where the main meal is a chunk of steak from the nation’s exchequer.

Cricket was once a game that insisted on a universal code of moral values such as fair play, abiding by rules, good sportsmanship and integrity of the umpire.

The Nation watched first in awe and later with adulation the phenomenon of the Ranatunga brothers learning and mastering the game of cricket. They brought renown and fame to the institution founded by pioneers Olcott and Leadbeater. Their success in the Gentleman’s game drove none elite Lankans to paroxysms of ecstasy watching commoners speaking the vernacular excelling over gentleman coached by clergymen – De Sarem and Fraser. They were acclaimed for their adherence to the dictum ‘Appamado Amatha Padam’ Diligence leads to perfection. But diligence in what?

Today the stellar stalwart produced in the traditions of Leadbeater has beaten the lead out of all.

Marx brothers

Marx brothers

The Minister of Ports Arjuna Ranatunga is undoubtedly the most outstanding of the ‘Ranatunga’ frères. He is the Dimitri of the cricketing clan from the Siyane Korale . Just as Dostoevsky’s ‘Dimitri’, he wanted to do things right. He was just uncertain about what that right way was. He is also the ‘Groucho’ of the Marx siblings chosen to act as Captain Spalding!

The appointment of his brother and his brazen defiance of public outrage has redefined the term ‘Nepotism’. Arjuna Ranatunga has redrawn the ethical boundaries of Cricket. Nepotism until now was defined as preference given to a relative by a person in power. Arjuna should be congratulated for his unpretentious plain dealing. He has demonstrated that ‘nepotism’ is not simple favoritism for kinfolk. It must be more than that. It must be the section of a grossly incompetent or an absurdly undeserving relative.

The ESPN cricinfo website describes Dhammika Ranatunga as “The eldest of three brothers to represent Sri Lanka at Test level. He has had the briefest sojourn in the international arena. He is described as a stoic opening batsman unsurprisingly blessed with an unflappable temperament.”

His stoicism and unflappable temperament should serve him well in his undeserved, unearned assignment as the head of the Ports Authority.

A politician can either be ahead or behind public opinion. But when they claim that public opinion is with them and proceed to flouts it brazenly, such should be condemned in the most unequivocal terms.

Arjuna Ranatuga played a critical role in the November 21st Movement that bought about the January 8th revolution. We do not know why he did it. What we do know is that the people believed him and he has been rewarded with Ministerial office.

Brothers Karamazov

Brothers Karamazov

Immediately after the parliamentary elections our Preachy President assured the nation that appointments to positions of authority will be filtered by him and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesighe. Therefore it is reasonable to conclude that the appointment of brother Dhammika must have been cleared by both President Sirisena and Premier Wickremesinghe. The nation however has a right to know the compelling reason that made them appease the ambitions of the Ranatunge frères.

More than ever before, we need our politicians to regain their standing with the public. They must begin to regard voters and citizens as something much more than morons. It is true that there is a substantial segment that is easily gulled. Yet the 8th January spontaneity has demonstrated that it is fast receding.

The voters of the Gampaha district are not knaves. Yet, two brothers, who claimed moral superiority from two different and opposing settings entered parliament.

How did they manage it? The virtue in public life is not found in our understanding of virtue. The political success of the Ranatunga clan has less to do with their political genius and more with our own “vulgar ethics. “

Our public morals have no links to moral rules and moral conduct. Moral behavior is dependent on our ability to engage in collective self-discovery and determining what kind of people we should be.

The success of the 8th January movement depends on our ability to dislodge the Cricketing knight from his high horse and the speed with which we do it.

President Maithripala Sirisena should not confine himself to Mandela and Gandhi. Busy as he is, he should include Abe Lincoln in his bed side reading. “Public sentiment is everything. With public sentiment nothing can fail; without it nothing can succeed. He who molds public sentiment goes deeper than he who enacts statutes or decisions possible or impossible to execute.”

I am an Old Anandian. If this is what Ananda produces then I am ashamed to be one.

Just look at Sanga from Trinity. What a cobtrast!

I am neither an Anandian nor when to any of those missionary schools.Luckily, my humble parents were able to send me to nonreligious schools( Royal and DS). But heck what schools have to do with the quality of few. Are you sure about the quality of Sanga. He speak well but other than that what else we can tell about him (other than the great cricket) . Even if there is a situation where you have to compare two school, compassion should be between an average student from Ananda and any other schools. The only thing I can smell from the comments is envy and jealousy of an old generation looner.

      Edwin Rogrigo:
Please be careful about extolling the virtues of old boys of particular schools. As an old Trinitian, I know that for every Sanga there have been a few others that you probably wouldn’t tolerate in your garden, leave alone under your roof!
      Unfortunate, but true.
As for Ranatunge, many of us read him from day 1 of his “defection” from Rajapaksa for the unmitigated opportunist he was. The progress from leaving his political home with Fonseka to appointing his brother to a position for which he has neither the knowledge nor education is a simple step after that!

      P.S.
Ask Sarath Fonseka what he thinks of Arjuna Ranatunga!!

There is no need to feel ashamed. Every school has produced some rascals, and also some upstanding citizens, that is a credit to their schools. It is all in one’s character, and it seems people like A.Ranatunge has very easily crossed that line and putting aside any self respect, doing what the previous lot was condemned for.
Basic decency and honesty are long gone.

Yes may be. But Sanga is also an equal liar. He told everyone that he’s quitting to be with his family and now see what he’s upto.

Well, this is what we all voted for, is it not ?

During “Chinthanaya” Days, we only heard about these things thru the grapevine because “oh my goodness, Media is muzzled” AND we were powerless to do anything about it.

In this Brave new “Yahapalana” world, we hear about these things in some sections of the press because “Oh my goodness, we have Media Freedom”

But we are STILL powerless to do anything about it.

Tell me, What really changed ?

The monkey concerned maintains a disgraceful silence on this matter. As if nothing has happened. While the whole country is trembling with anger, about the same issue.

Smacks of nothing, but total arrogance, disrespect and disregard for public opinion. This is what is wrong with this country. The guy is supposed to serve the people with humility. He does the opposite. Expects people to beg him.

The least this guy could do is to answer the people. If for nothing else, out of respect to the impoverished people. Who finance his luxurious 4WD jeeps, perks and privileges.

Hell no, Sri Lankan system has bred this kind of arrogant pricks into our corrupt political establishment in their hundreds. All the way since 1948. They feel a deep sense of entitlement to these plum appointments.

It is truly time to show this guy and his corrupt family doors of Welikada prison.

    Cheers!

Agree with most things “Ben” is saying.

But what beef has he got about our nation chasing the European vultures, our blood suckers, in 1948?

He seems to suggest corruption in our politics started “All the way since 1948”. What servile boot licking?

Think about the corruption of the Portuguese, the Dutch and British Jews who invaded us and sucked our blood from 1505-1948.Think about the corrupt 1815 opearation that gave them control over us without loosing a single life.

You still believe all this started in 1948?

You need to clean your own brain of corrupt intentions, “Ben”.

When President Sirisena looks in the mirror he says to himself…I am not as bad as ‘him’. It consoles him, every time he lets down his fellow countrymen. His moral compass is not flawed. His Political acumen is wanting and his capacity for leadership is obviously lacking.

“They must begin to regard voters and citizens as
something much more than morons.” What makes you
think they really are more than that? Who is the
second largest majority preferential puller? How
come most of the allegedly corrupt monkeys were
elected to make laws of the country again and
again after repeated calls from all sides, not to
do so? My3 leads by example of appointing his
ones and others respectfully follow! What all
these indicate is that more than 90% of corruption
    allegations are just time pass.

Mr. Sarath: You quote Dostoyevsky & Groucho Marx:
I only quote in my local colloquial style and this is what it is like:

” Gurunanse Hitagena Muthrang Chiva, Goloya Duwamin Karath”. (When the Big Boss urinates standing, the Golays (pupils) will urinate running around spoiling the whole environment) Isn’t this what is happening now? Why blame only this “monkey” referred to by Ben Hurling in his comment above?

True and Honest leadership and the power behind too should follow this motto. Be truthful to serve the country and its people.
But our leaders and the men we voted and not voted are pulling this country apart into oblivion.
We have no one now to be trust worthy to rule our country.

We the people took the country from the vultures who were annihilating this land and handed it over to this so called Yahapalanaya hoping they are the messiah’s to steer this country from destruction. We have been cheated wholesale.

Nothing has happened since that day of silent Revolution of the people of Srilanka in Jan this year.
We have wasted our effort but with one consolation the people of this country the true “Lovers of SL ” were able to realise what has happened during the past Regime and were more politically savvy to express openly the wrong doings of the politicians and the leaders .
It’s up to the law to punish the murderers the thieves and the druggies , the Law has been made a laughing stock as the politicians are interfering in the Law of the country. Why? oh why? Still interfering like MARA ,Siblings and the Offsprings did before.

Why the PM interfered in the matter of Weerawansa today at the BIA?? what’s his job ? Does he know his responsibilities? Let the Law do their job efficiently .The President , the PM and the Ministers ! be responsible and Stop manipulating and interfering into every other matters. The country has gone to DOGS , Clearly it’s evident that Srilanka is LIMPING .
MARA stooges are popping up including the PM and the President are preventing catching the thieves and Murderers.
    Stupid people and stupid Politicians.
Feel sorry only for the silent Revolutionists like us. CT. did a fare share in publishing all our shouts of desperations and anguish.

YAHAPALANAYA HAS LET US DOWN TOTALLY . NO HOPES NOW SO START WITH ANOTHER SILENT REVOLUTION.
LEAVE THE MONKEYS TO CLIMB TREES.

MARA STOOGES AGAINST YAHAPALANAYA IN BLACK CLOTHING. End of SL.
The curse of Kuweni the Yakka Princess will never allow SL to prosper. SL produced thousands of educated men and women but the Education has not helped to prosper the country INSTEAD it has helped to Bankrupt and Loot the country’s wealth. The Education has not helped to live and let live . The education has made one to be greedy ,jealous and be thieves and murderers.
    That’s the CURSE.
When the bogus Srilankan historians tried to white wash and rewrite the history as Sinhala men and women have Aryan blood that was a cock and bull stories to deceive the village idiots.
There was no Aryan blood but thru and thru there was only one blood that was Dravidian blood from the south of India.
When the Lion Kingdom of Vijaya from the South of India arrived along with Yakka Princess the Dravidian blood too arrived, there never was Aryan blood as a matter of fact.
The mixture occurred following all sorts of invasion from the West, East, and the Middle East.
Guys stop fabricating history to fool the illiterate.

Opposition should question these appointments in the Parliament. Civil Society Movement should commence a agitation campaign until these unsuitable appointees in SLIC, Srilankan Airlines and the SLPA are made to resign. President should help this process by requesting his brother to resign from SLT as he got elected promising GOOD GOVERNANCE. There are plenty of high caliber professionals to fill the positions.
It is the Public who own these Institutions and not self seeking politicians. Therefor civic minded individuals who want to establish Good Governance in this country have every right to do so.Sirimewan

      Absolutely.

It is the duty of the public to make sure Dhammika Ranatunga will never set foot in the SLPA office.

Ports Authority is like a Crown Jewel that belongs to the people of this country.

If managed with vision like a vibrant international business ports & shipping alone can pull this country out of poverty.

Are we going to let such public assets be ruined by a corrupt, uneducated gang of brothers from Gampaha? Never again.

      Ranatunga must have misunderstood.

“The least this guy could do is to answer the people. If for nothing else, out of respect to the impoverished people” – Ben Hurling

Ben…. he will answer after Sira explains to the impoverish people why he brought back to the Parliament the loosers after the people kicked them out.

Sira appointed his brother…. and Kool went one better.

Ranatunga, you have irrevocably lost the affection, trust and confidence placed on you by the public. If you resort to following MARA’s nepotism as your real standard of public behavior and accountability, then I read it that you have been dishonest during the past election campaign, and faked as a gentleman only to get power into your clutches. Go ahead with your plans, the public will remember you for what you are under your mask.

These Ranatunga brothers seem to be afflicted with a sense of entitlement. They remind me of the schoolyard bullies who used to beat up the quiet kids and eat their lunch. And then they get selected for sports and become prefects by holding ‘pandang’ to the teachers. They make me sick.

This guy can never be trusted, after all he is the guy who got Murali to bowl chuckers, robbed the Cricket board when he was an executive, was well known for cheating in international cricket by pretending to require a runner because the fat bloated blubber could not run, has crossed political parties thrice now to exploit opportunities, the recent cross over was again because he knew that he had a better chance to be corrupt with the new government. If the scumbag has any decency at least he must make a public statement disclosing how his brother is the most qualified for the Port job. He is a coward and a thug and I bet you he will remain silent and work with his corrupt brother to rob the country. Time now for the Ranatunga family to be dismembered and fed to the dogs like the Rajapakse family.

There is a remarkable similarity between Arjuna Ranatunge and former president, Mahinda Rajapakse. Both are “courageous” in a particular way. Both achieved what no one thought was possible: Winning the World Cup and Vanquishing the Tigers. Both became instant heroes. And it was only then both started showing their true colours.

Both are arrogant; in fact thuggish. Both care little for public opinion. Both believe their siblings deserve high positions on account of their own personal achievements. Both treat (or treated) those who were their subordinates with contempt, as vassals. Both expect the country to venerate them forever more.

And most of all, both believe that they have some kind of divine right to rule and do as they please.

The unfortunate thing is that a majority in Sri Lanka (Sinhalese) find nothing wrong in this.

Arjuna has a bloated ego like his physic. Dhammika too was a person who spoke and was seen as a Mr: clean on SIRASA during talk shows. This is hmbugs. This is nepotism at it’s best.Arjuna and he were the severest critics of pavul palanaya of the previous govt. What have Sobitha, Rathana theros, Sirisena , Ranil and other so called NGO do gooders have to say now? Arjuna took his other brother Sanjeeva to the team through the back door in Australia when he was captaining the side. Ports Authority workers must show protest and Dhammika must resign immediately or Sirisena must take action for the sake of yahapalanaya.

“They must begin to regard voters and citizens as something much more than morons”
Why not Sarath? how else can they justify their election to such positions that they themselves knew they do not deserve?
And is there anything wrong in treating morons like morons?
Every one who was fooled by the massive con drive of the jahapalanya are gradully realizing their folly and are now angry that they let them be fooled not just once but twice.

    Well said!
I envisage a situation where the Ranatunga brothers will abandon Cricket and take to Rugger.But,of-course in well defined positions, like Scrum-Half and the three-quarter line.Perhaps Dhammika will be Scrum-Half and the ball will eventually reach Arjuna, who with the expertise of selling Dummies will touch down under the posts, for an easy kick for the youngest Sibling!
What will be the score at end of Play?
In US Dollars or Sterling Pounds?

Arjuna must have heard the number by Elvis Presley–Its now or Never…
