By Asoka Seneviratne –
If ever Sri Lanka has produced the most fake democrat, it has to be our back-door President Ranil Wickramesinghe. While he altered our constitution and laws by 19th Amendment, claiming to strengthen what little left of our apparent democracy, he is denying the most fundamental component of any democracy; the right to vote! At least Trump did not pretend to be a great Democrat! But RW did! RW made SL one up over America!
He denied the local elections over a year ago bogusly claiming lack of funds all the while spending millions of borrowed monies on a non existing national pride on the Independence Day celebrations. Further he also got the bunch of Rajapaksa crooks and hooligans in the parliament to approve extra Rs. 200 million over and above the budget on his own foreign travel. Note that this is all borrowed money we don’t have !
This loser never earned the right through a legitimate vote through an election so at the end of his 50 year long sordid political life, he decided to travel around the world in style at the cost of more borrowed millions paid by his impoverished nation!
The nation killers, the Rajapaksas who appointed Ranil as president to save their own skin, robbed our nation up to eyeballs with million dollar borrowed Chinese money. Then they invested on non self-sustaining projects while pocketing their cut managed to run our country to historical bankruptcy spearheaded by an 8th grader another Rajapaksa named Gotabaya.
This foolish man gave away Rs 650 billion (about $ 3.5 B) as tax cuts to his business buddies not figuring out how to pay for it. Idiocy of the highest order! When he ran short of dollars he told farmers to use cow-dung for fertilizer thereby killing the only productive sector we had in the midst of a global Pandemic.
Even when so much financially broke, Gota & Co allowed his goons to even rob from so called organic fertilizer that turned out to be human waste! Nobody was held accountable!
Greedy Ranil could not wait to be called the President and stopped all loan repayments placing us squarely as a bankrupt nation. Ranil used money thus saved to provide the essentials. Then to cover the huge budget deficit, he imposed massive taxes on people. People were already down to two meals a day and the tax cuts landed them on a mere one meal a day. All the while Ranil was jet setting around the world with more borrowed money as if we have not borrowed enough.
All the while a vast number of Lankans -men and women – were running away to Middle East for a meagre 150 dollar wage in order to escape hunger and poverty. Imagine our leader who enslaves our mothers to wicked Arabs, and using the dollars thus earned to jet set for him and his buddies. I have personally witnessed these young and impoverished mothers at airports, so helplessly leaving their young babies and kids to a distant and an unknown land for a mere $150 .The sadness in their faces is heartwarming and I cannot express the disgust of our so-called leaders who put these poor families through this misery.
Now picture in this background, a whole bunch of politicians, ministers and the back door President Ranil being driven around in air-conditioned luxury with escorts and bodyguards. Have you seen all those luxury SUV’s , Sedans being driven in and out of parliament and Ranil/MR bungalows? Do these vermin have no conscience? They ride high on the back of those poor women in the Middle East while their babies cry out for their mothers.
So whatever happened to our 2600 year old great culture and decency?
As if they have not caused enough pain to our people, they dare to whisk through our crowded streets, totally driving the everyday drivers and pedestrians to the ditch. Do they deserve such a privilege? Why?
Are their business more important than the rest of us? If so, how come they managed to run our nation to a deep ditch?
So coming back to the back-door President Ranil, we can see he is trying every trick of the book to delay elections. First, he appointed the IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon using a trick that absentee vote on the CC is to be considered as a NO vote. Of course, the shameless lackey speaker helped in the process as his whole family has benefitted from being a lap dog to RW. Then when the SCOSL suspended this appointment this week, the great Democrat Ranil claimed that the SCOSL has no such power.
Whatever happened to the much bragged about co-equal branches of government doctrine that his crooked uncle JRJ bragged about? Didn’t JRJ brag that the Supreme court is the 3rd co-equal branch of the government that checks the other two branches?
Is this supposed Democrat brain dead or just want to bend the constitution to his benefit ? If the decisions of the SCOSL is less superior than the other two branches, how come RW was reappointed as PM during the Sirisena time when he got kicked out? Did he then scream also that Parliament is superior than the SCOSL?
Again, a hypocrite of the first order! A power leach!
Talking about the date of elections, this is yet another blunder RW’s uncle JRJ made. Without fixing a fixed date on the calendar for a presidential election, he left that power to the President thus creating all this nonsensical mess bout an election date!
In my opinion every top leader who ran our land for the past several decades should be standing in front of a judge or should be stripped from civil rights. The biggest crime being bending the law for personal benefit after having taken an oath to defend the constitution and the law. Those who eat grass don’t understand those precious concepts anyway!
Recently I was in SL and could not feel sadder to our broken system. Let me take one simple example. Starting from the highway way entrance at Kottawa and heading towards Colombo on the high level road, every intersection is a disastrous traffic mess. The only traffic law being trying to intimidate the other and get through. The so-called highway code is ancient history.
Nugegoda high level road and Kohuwala junction both have traffic lights that don’t work. There are many more. Two years ago too they were not working too. In fact, countless are the number of traffic light that are not working. As a result, traffic slows down tremendously causing so much waste of expensive petrol and precious time. Now don’t we have local several of governments who get paid with public money? Why don’t they fix these essential public facilities? Who is holding them accountable?
They built an expensive overpass at Kohuwala a year ago but never fixed the broken traffic light. The junction is still a total mess !
Where is our elected and appointed leadership? Who runs our country? Are we simply dumb to keep these goons in power? I have no doubt hundreds of politicos including Ranil pass through these. But are they blind to these chaos or do they too eat grass?
Forget about fixing broken traffic lights. Let’s say they have no money to fix these. Why cant they put huge STOP signed on all sides and allow fist come first serve through these intersections. Since the majority of Lankans lack discipline, have a few cops at the intersection and hit large fines who don’t abide by traffic rules. Do this for a month, the word will go around to obey the stop signs.
We all will be better off and more importantly will look civilized
Let’s be honest. Millions of our people can do with some TOUGH love ! But before that the leaders too have to walk straight !
Finally, my hope is that the JVP will come to power. Not because they have so far presented their platform in detail but what other options do we have?
Former US President, Nobel laureate Barak Obama used to say ” one cannot keep doing the same thing and expect a different result”. So RW and goons, MR and goons, Sajith and goons (except General Fonseka) and some of the small party criss-crossers like the robe wearing crook monk, Patali, and some of the fringe leaders must quit. They have done enough damage jumping side to side fooling our people long enough.
The time has come when the rubber hits the road
Welcome Anura Kumara Dissanayake but where on earth is your manifesto? Do that or you will end up as just another cheap politician, full of hot air?
We remain a nation taken for a long ride by the top politicos of all parties thanks to our grass eaters!

Considering that the millions of the Hoi Polloi determine the outcome of elections (not the middle class or the educated) the NPP must keep their trump cards hidden and depend on other means to attract votes. If their strategies are exposed, the copycat putharno and even the butter lander hyena can use them and avoid elections just to stay in power, or use them to split the vote going towards the only credible, committed and genuine alternative which is the NPP.
/
Raj-UK / July 30, 2024
Mr Pethiyagoda
Does the NPP have ‘THE’ solution for economic recovery which has to be kept secret from others? In my understanding, the NPP is following the UNP when it comes to funding by the IMF & Handunnetti of the JVP promoting Ravi K’s invitation to money launderers or maybe AKD & Co have convinced the SL diaspora to remit their savings to bolster the Forex reserves.
In UK, for example, all serious political parties have their policies, objectives & strategy published in their respective manifestos well before even an election but kept updated with time. The manifesto contains the costings & the sources of funding so that the public & rival parties can question the feasibility. The only reason the NPP (& others) who have no proper manifesto is because they are in the dark & in the case of SL, all that talk is probably pissing in the wind.

Rather like that famous “Bond Scam”, this Organic Scam seems to be taking on a life of its own.

Was that supposed to be the issue? Not some alleged toxic bacterium?
How come that a major global supplier of organic manure supplied infected manure only to this wonder of Asia?
Its business is going well globally, despite the dispute with us.
Cannot be there more to the episode than robbing by G&Co?
As a sequel, India supplied us with ammonia pellets calling it organic fertilizer and the product proved a disaster as the farmers ha no idea of of how to use it.
Who made money on this deal? Who cares?

Dear Lasantha –
It is universal practice at elections to present your agenda so people know exactly what they are voting for. That also gives the public a chance to hold the party accountable.
I am not a fan at all of JRJ. But he presented his platform way before elections. Free trade zone, liberalizing the economy, floating the rupee, changing the constitution ( a silly one that is full of contradictions and eventually made the mess we are in ) are some of the larger items.
Lasantha – can you spell out of a few things that AKD will want to do that other parties might copy ? Just curious!

Actually, the Kohuwala flyover was completed and declared open only this month. Since its opening I have gone over the flyover and through the junction below several times and I didn’t see any mess at the junction. The junction is not now controlled by traffic lights and I don’t see any need for it because the volume of traffic at the junction below the flyover is not enough to warrant traffic lights (definitely not at off-peak times).

Great democrat Ranil did not lift a finger to bring to justice any of those Rajapaksa goons, central bank robbers, Easter bombing culprits and thousand more who have broken many laws and robbed people’s money! .
Instead he tried again to fool the grass eaters by launching a much publisized anti drug campaign headed by now suspended IGP but so far not one drug tsar has been brought to justice. Instead they have been rounding up the 2-bit street pushers and made a big show on TV.
Our leaders have been playing this game for 45 years and that is the main reason to try AKD & Co.

SJ:
“What makes one sure that one thing is potentially worse than the actually bad.”
My reasons for being apprehensive about a possible future JVP government include the following:
1. The unapologetic and impenitent attitude of the JVP towards their murderous past (AKD’s qualified apologies notwithstanding), which reflects badly on their democratic credentials and morality. Readers would remember Nalin Hewage’s (senior member) callous remarks not so long ago in a TV debate.
2. Their apparent absence of a viable plan to uplift the economy, the need of the hour, evidenced by their failure thus far to produce it and dodging a debate on the subject with the SJB. If they followed Marxist/socialist policies, as they probably would, the country would go further backwards.
3. The insular, frog-in-the-well mentality of senior members of the JVP to the outside world as exemplified by Handunneththi’s (their supposed economy chief) infamous characterisation of Elon Musk as an “economic hit man” and Lal Kantha reportedly saying that under a JVP government Sri Lanka would withdraw from the Commonwealth.
Continued.
/
Leonard Jayawardena / July 31, 2024
Continued from above post.
4. The generally mediocre intellectual calibre and integrity of even its senior members as evidenced by their understanding and analyses of various international and local issues. In their public utterances they sound like typical politicians–“gentlemanly,” “statesmanly,” etc. are not words that spring to mind.
5. On the corruption front, while they might zealously prosecute cases against political opponents–even this has to follow due process–it is doubtful if they would manifest the same zeal when it comes to errant members of their side, so again being typical politicians in that respect.

(1) unapologetic and impenitent attitude…towards their murderous past
(3) insular, frog-in-the-well mentality

The above charges apply to all political parties, especially the UNP and its offshoot.
(2) apparent absence of a viable plan to uplift the economy— do others have a credible plan except nodding to the IMF?

”……the possibility that things might become worse under a JVP government?” My fear too.
I would vote for AKD as President because he appears to be sincere & promises to abolish the perks & privileges of politicians, which the country cannot afford. However, the NPP with its JVP connection, along with several other groups, all, obviously, expecting representation, would be, in my opinion, chaotic in governance. Particularly, the old JVP in the background & the fact that the JVP still venerates its former murderous leader & subscribing to defunct Communist ideology, as implied in their website, is a matter of concern. AKD as President & his leadership of the JVP & NPP, could be a sign of absolute power, no different from the Rajapakse regime, which is why I would like to see the SJB, without Premadasa jnr, forming the next govt. With AKD as President & the SJB in governance, each holding the reigns, hopefully, will result in a synergy, unlike when slimy Sirisena obstructed everymove by the UNP during the Yahapalanaya period.

When discussing Trump, it’s clear that JVP supporters are not much different from his followers. Both groups seem driven by raw instincts rather than reason, akin to predators on the hunt. Instead of devising strategies to elevate our nation from its current state of vulnerability, the focus remains on catching thieves.
Aside from Oneshot, the others are all interconnected, as he himself has admitted. Do you really believe that AKD will hold Mara and Gota accountable? As you’ve mentioned, if AKD were to win—which I sincerely hope does not happen—it will be important to scrutinize his actions closely. My prediction is that things would deteriorate further, accompanied by an increase in authoritarian behavior.
If I were Ranil and won, I would delegate significant responsibilities to the NPP/JVP. This approach would be a safer bet than placing all our trust in inexperienced leaders during such a critical period.
Unfortunately, our electorate often fails to think critically, much like in the 2019 election when people voted for Gota with unrealistic expectations despite his known track record. They faced harsh lessons then, and if they don’t take a more thoughtful approach to voting now, they may face similar consequences.

Dear Leonard –
The last day I passed Kohuwala overpass was on July 8th this year. I was driving under the overpass and saw the traffic lights all dead It was the usual survival of the fittest driving through. Try to block the other and drive through all the time praying nobody hits you. it fact when I was in SL in March last year , they were dead too.
.So was traffic light Nugegoda H Level road ( this has been down for years). The junction is a total mess like most our intersection. Pannipitiya junction neat Dharmapala old road had beautiful new traffic lights several years ago ( I used to nickname it London as they were so pretty) has been down at least 3 years.
The same junction on high level road is exceptionally busy place too with a very large schools right there , but no traffic lights at all.
My point is to expose those hundred of national, provincial and local leaders we elect and award pay money and perks and even allow to rob who simply don’t do their job.
As long we we as a nation turn a blind eye to this neglect and accept as the norm, we as a nation will rot in the poorer club and live like in the jungle.

With regard to the Nugegoda flyover, my experience has been that at least for 90% of the time there is no congestion of any sort at the junction. And if you go in a north to south or south to north direction you can go over the flyover.
If I recall correct, a traffic cop directs traffic at these junctions at peak hours.

“He was certainly no hero to me. But it was an illegitimate act that defeated him in 2005.”
It is funny a professor who is an anti Tamils telling boycotting elections by some Tamil voters is illegitimate. If that is the case, almost all the elections happened in this island are illegitimate. If that election is legally illegitimate then you have the right to go to the courts to proof it. Ranil told publicly that 5 TNA Mps voted for him in the secret hold election. So, it is an illegal election. There were talks about bribes involved in this election. He now indirectly accept that Ranil is his hero.

A
Why are you shying away from the fact that the LTTE collected a massive bribe on behalf of the MR camp to order and implement a boycott in the North.
To say that one villain was defeated by another because of cheating is no endorsement of either.
(If you have learning difficulties, get some help from a patient soul.)

SJ,
If you know all the truth, and if you have prove you and your colleagues can take it to the courts and punish the both bribers. Giving or Taking a Bribe is a Crime and hiding the truth also a Crime. The bribes must have happen during 2018 and during 2022. You accept that Bribe as genuine? What a joker? It is shame on you who is part of the bribe alliance for many decades.

No, it is perverse satisfaction knowing that you can smugly and gleefully get away with suppressing the happiness and prosperity of the common masses whilst sadistically solidifying your own power and control!

I do worry when I see tears for “the common masses” from faraway places.

ramona therese fernando / July 31, 2024
SJ,

Do not worry. Faraway, and one sees with great clarity, the hopelessness of our Motherland, where those in the midst of our common masses rise like lotus flowers with the accumulated wealth of the common man’s hard work. Can one ever come back to endure the sufferings one’s forefathers endured? One can only hope, pray, and give some feedback so our struggling people can gain some realization into the issues that have plagued them for so long.

It will be kinder to let the common masses sort things out by themselves without patronisation by any.

You think? The sorting out is taking too many generations and getting worse each time. Those from the common masses must speak up, even from afar. But you are not from the common masses.

Ramona,
You pointed out a few weeks ago that Kamala H is not popular in America, but don’t you see that her opinion today is polarizing Americans like wildfire? Biden scored low against TRUMP and was outscored by her today. Don’t think so? What is your opinion today?
Hopefully your dreams of supporting the idiot that even the unborn know and the damage this bastard has done will never come true. Defeating Republicans is my dream for the common good of the world

I know what I am and do not pretend to be what I am not.
Can you honestly say that for yourself?

Honestly, yes. If we had remained in the motherland, I’d be one of the suffering masses, ME and all. So, you are obviously not one of the suffering masses or you would have proudly declared it.

Ramona,
In my opinion, those who suffer in the streets of Colombo don’t suffer as much as those who suffer in the tent cities of Pittsburgh.
/
ramona therese fernando / August 3, 2024
OC,

My heart bleeds for both, but the ones in Pittsburgh are not the common masses.

I am not.
I live here and do not pretend.

SJ,

You do not pretend what? In or out of the country does not make a difference. For one can remain in the country and not give a damn of what the common masses are suffering. Or one can live outside, and know that the common masses are living even more miserable lives than at the tine when one was was an in-country common mass.

Well said.
.
Sadism – I diagnosed this as far back as 2009 to no avail.
.
Sadism of those who are governing us and are in leadership positions.

some scripts to Namal are unimaginably funny and real crap . He advises to
people like Hakeem and Rishad that they can now approach Ranil because of
their split from Ranil and it was reported that he said Aragalaya burning MP

“He will Beat Maduro’s election result ! “
When has the US ever accepted an election result where its proxies lose?
Please do some research rather than relying on distorted news stories.
