Ranil Promises Quick Action Against Journalist Gamage Attack, As Gamage Points Finger At Lanza And Family

Journalist Freddy Gamage, who came under attack on Thursday afternoon, has accused controversial Parliamentarian Nimal Lanza, and his brother, Dayan, as the culprits behind his attack.

“Just two weeks back, Dayan, who is the Deputy Mayor of Negombo, warned me that if I continue to write negatively about him and his brother, Nimal, god will punish me,” Gamage told the Colombo Telegraph from his hospital bed. Gamage said that the Deputy Mayor had ordered him to write only positive articles about the Lanza family, and nothing negative.

According to Gamage, who is a web journalist and the convener of the Professional Web Journalists Association, without a certain form of ‘authority’ it is impossible to orchestrate such an attack in broad daylight.

Gamage is continuing to receive treatment at the Negombo Hospital, after he sustained head injuries when two unidentified men in full face helmets and raincoats attacked him with a pole, near the Negombo Municipal Council.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, who condemned the attack against Gamage, assured quick action against the culprits. “I have informed the Inspector General of Police to carry out an immediate investigation on the attack, and bring the culprits to book,” Wickremesinghe said in a Tweet.

“I was walking towards the car, after covering the Municipal Council’s monthly meeting, when I saw two people in a bike near my car, when I gave them a second look, one of them jumped towards me and tried to assault me with a pole, but even though I jumped back, they were able to hit me on the head. As I started running, one of them kept shouting to the other saying ‘hit the fellow,” Gamage said, adding that even though the people nearby had tried to take down the bike number plate, there was no number plate on either side of the bike.

Following the incident, Director General of the Government Information Department Darshani Gunathilaka assured that the media suppression the country witnessed during the previous regime will not continue. “I condemn this cowardly attack. The government is committed to ensure that the media will not be suppressed in any manner,” she said.

The police have also been instructed to provide necessary security for Gamage, to ensure his safety.

In the recent past, Gamage has been exposing corruption in connection to Parliamentarian Nimal Lanza and his relatives, who has alleged links to the heroin and narcotic mafia in Negombo. ( By Munza Mushtaq © Colombo Telegraph)

Why can’t the IGP take action on his own accord. Is it not the duty of the police to take action in such cases. Why have they got to wait for the Prime minister’s instruction. What a funny land Srilanka–

      PROUDMAN,

You have a very big point.

An independent, law abiding, professional Police force should not hang around for a green-light from the PM. They should have dragged in Dayan Lanza for a chit-chat at the Police station at once.

I am disgusted impoverished taxpayers for SL are sponsoring Nimal Lanza in our Parliament. Pay such a well-known mafia like crook a fat salary with all sorts of allowances, duty free vehicles and endless perks.

      That is the real tragedy.

      Cheers!

Remember this Lanzwa was prevented being arrested by Police two or 3 years ago.
There, direct ABUSIVE mediation of Mahindara Rajapakshe saved his bum.

Mahinda Rajaakshe should be accountable for any of the rises of these drug kin pins and their unexpected behaviours. Today, MR behaves as if nothing wrong was deliberately done by him – but the buggers indifferenness made almost high crimes even become multi high crimes.
      God save this nation.

I wonder who appointed Lanza as the Kelaniya SLFP organizer and gave a deputy minister post.

What MR did was wrong. That is one of the reasons why people showed him the door but what changed after MR was kicked out?

Beach boys of the kind Lanza can afford a lot- he should have enough billions earned by illegal drug traffficking… these men should be kept in jail for the rest of their lives. But POLITICAL high men being invovled in saving the men have worsened the situation. Ballige Putha Rajakashe will have to face jail sessions all the crimes he directly or indirectly commited to this nation.

Do not you think even police would not behave as their counterparts in the west in these issues – sure, we have few good police men, bu tmostly, the system that srilankens are used to is far from all stadnards. Even if the situation has turned to good some extent means not that they would work freely.

This is the reason why I think PM addressed it. Sure, police must not wait to react until it comes from PM or President, but our systems are not that improved by nature. They are always on slow mode. Each time having seen the kind I get hurt. Systems are good only those who know noting abou thte western efficiecies.

      Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe

      RE: Ranil Promises Quick Action

Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe, you know who gains and who is behind.

Tell the police to do their job, and that you will not interfere politically.

You tell that to Nimal Lanza, and his brother, Dayan, as well.

      PROUDMAN

You’re perfectly right Proudman. Our politicians have the habit of interfering with police duty,

It’s the duty of the sufferer ( in this case Gamage) to lodge a complaint and action will be taken, no need for others to bother about it.

Are there reports that police don’t attend to work without a spur from politicians?

      PROUDMAN:

As you may well know, SL has ordinary citizens and Princes.

Police may not approach a Prince unless given Special Orders (old habits die hard, you know).

The Fresh Prince of Fish Town is untouchable. Dammit, the last time the Police went to his palatial home, the Great Liberator himself arrived to shape things up.

Don’t cross his path unless you know a good orthopaedic surgeon.

Let us wait and see; but don’t hold your breath.

I thought, Batalanada’s party had condemned Lanzas as crooks, thugs and drug dealers during the previous Regime.

Why Batalanada didn’t send his UNP CID or the UNP F*****CID to nail him, when the latter had time to even to question Namal’s 88 year grand Ma on money laundering and illegal land deals.

And questioned, arrested, and remanded Dhammaloka Thero for feeding and caring for a baby Elephant.

Is the Minister Mr John Amratunga not doing his job?…

Let us cite some international agreement on these matters and appoint a committee of three UNP lawyers to investigate the whole incident

    Sumaney:
I thought I was the only target of your incoherent ramblings.
However, your post with regard to the Lanzas reveals a great deal more than you intended, I’m sure.
Haven’t you still found that rock from under which you emerged or have your previous patrons found better use for it?

Lanza is right. His words- God will punish you, which he shot at Gamage, will certainly come to pass. But punishment will not come on Gamage, but on anyone who destroys lives and families through drugs. They will certainly have to face the wrath of God.

      Lanza s backside is right.

He was a beach boy drug trafficker.. Maharaja made him a so big.

Maharaja should pay the charges of Helicopter travel made to Lanzas house abusing state assets on that day. More over, as head of state he sould know all these well.

When Mahinda did this no one was caught?

Lansaz are still powerful in Yahapalan government because the Presedent appointed Nimal Lanza as a deputy minister. The president and the primeminister are responsible when courageous media person, Freedy Gamage is attacked by their thugs.
Hope this trend will not continue and all media persons like Freedy will be able to do their duty for the wellbeing of the society.

Man not that poweful, they are just members, since the situation is like the ozean since the current duo have no other choice. What are the options if the majority are on the site of bunch of thugs ?

Yahapalanya to take ground, there should be pre-yahapalana adminstration in this country filled with stupid, vulnerable abusive masses.

Even if IGB is clean means know that entire police could behave so.

Even if President is clean means not that his men coudl bheave so clean

Even if PM is clean means not that his supporters could all his supporters behave so
