Deputy Minister of Social Empowering and Welfare, Ranjan Ramanayaka has refused to accept an additional allowance granted to all Parliamentarians.
In a letter addressed to Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, MP Ramanayaka said that he had decided to make a sacrifice in aligning himself with the masses, who continued to support the government while they them themselves were suffering and having to reshape their lives due to the enormous state debts the country has incurred.
He urged Speaker to take necessary steps to stop paying him the additional allowance of Rs. 100,000.
The cabinet on 29th of November had approved the proposal to increase the off allowances granted to all Parliamentarians.
Minister of Parliamentary Reforms & Mass Media, Gayantha Karunathilaka has proposed that the daily allowance of Rs. 500 given to all MPs be increased to Rs. 2500. Apart from the increase in the daily allowance, the Cabinet has also approved the proposal for an additional allowance of Rs. 100,000 to be granted to MPs every month, to allow them to carry out their work in their respective electorates.

I was told by a late Minister, that they need money to have an open house and go for every funeral and wedding in the electorate. His salary was inadequate to do this. This applies to poor MPs and not the ones who had amassed wealth in the previous governments and those who have made money like the duo from Ampara. There may be many like this duo, but I do not know them so I am mentioning this pair

Okay so he gave up his additional allowance of a lakh a month. Big deal ! Pretty obvious he does NOT feel the pinch, like the rest of us do. There may be hundreds, no, thousands of Sri Lankans who have sacrificed much,much more without all this fanfare and who have done so in their poverty and not in their abundant wealth. Remember the “Widow’s mite”?
Having said that, it is not to take away from his act of benevolence, but I think we must not run away with the idea that he deserves the ” moon and the stars” as a reward for what he has done. Furthermore I don’t think, IF, he is the man he is, that he would want all this flag waving on his behalf for a simple act of sacrifice, which after all is the BOUNDEN DUTY of “Peoples politicians”.
He could however set an example, not only to those of the Diyawanne House, but to the rest of the Country; our striking Doctors, Nurses, Port workers,Bus Drivers,Teachers, Varsity Students,Railway Men,et al who want more at the drop of a hat and stop work if they don’t get it, all at the expense of the Country.

In my earlier comment, I questioned as to the position taken by the “Rathu Sahodarayas”, mentioning six in numbers of them, giving a hint that reference was to the JVP. Today (19th) I received a very categorical answer from none other than its Leader Mr. Anura Kumara Dissanayke. He, participating in a TV discussion titled “Salakuna” conducted by “Hiru” channel, this question was raised. Mr. Dissanayake in answering, said:”JVP has made a decision to take the increased allowance; but all the money received will be used ONLY on Social Development Projects that would publicly be announced and the media would be invited to give full coverage to those activities”. Yes, the stance taken by the erstwhile Hon. Ranjan Ramanayake should be held in high esteem.
He is following the stand taken by the JVP members where their salaries and allowances are pooled into a fund for development. No member gets any funds for their personal spending.
These examples should be followed by the super rich members, including the duo from Amparai. Finally the Media Minister too should refrain from bringing such motions in Parliament, instead bring something to relieve tax burdens imposed on the masses.
