Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake was arrested by the Colombo Crimes Division short while ago for the possession of the official weapon without a valid license, sources familiar with the incident confirmed.
According to media reports the license for the said weapon was last renewed in 2016.
Police visited Ramanayake’s house at the Madiwela MPs housing scheme Saturday (04) afternoon with an unspecified search warrant.
Cops informed that they have information of Ramanayake being in possession of sensitive documents given to him by intelligence officers. However, his arrest was for the failure to renew his license for the past four years.
Concluding a four hour search police were able to find a weapon without a proper license, bullets and several pornographic CDs.
Prior to being taken into custody Ramanayake informed media that he will not attempt to stay out of prison and get himself admitted.
“I have only exercised my right of expression guaranteed to me by the constitution and the law. I have no reason to evade arrest. I have not done anything wrong and I have nothing to hide,” Ramanayake told media shortly before police entered his house to commence the search.
Ramanayake who was an outspoken minister on many social issues and corruption irrespective party affiliations was a known whistleblower on many issues.
In the run up to the Presidential election last November Ramanayake called a media briefing and disseminated information relating to a newly purchased real estate in the state of California allegedly by the son of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

I have never owned a firearm either official or unofficial. I do own a motorcycle – officially! I need revnue licence and insurance for it. Two years ago I was apprehended without valid insurance. I got it promptly, but I was fined 5K by a magistrate. A lawyer had to appear for me, because I didn’t know where to sit in the Court etc. Had to pay her, too. I was later told that 500/= to the cop would have got me off.

What I want, primarily is to have the election properly conducted. A committed younger winner may be preferable. Suppose we don’t get one, and I have to serve. I will not set about fighting everybody. I’ll have to work within the system, raise the profile of the role, initiate changes which will lead to fairer and more effective representation of the real stakeholders, spread aspects of work being done there to other schools, etc. I mean State-run, segregated village schools. Thanks for appreciating my comment, but a little correction. It is said that the firearm was “official” but that the licence had not been renewed. So, it had originally been licensed. The Police knew it to be in his possession.

In Sri Lanka, politics is such a dangerous game that it is thought necessary to issue firearms to Members of Parliament. Whether this is necessary, is a quite different subject, and deserves discussion. Two schools of thought. One is that if you give such arms to all reliable people, then the thugs can be kept in place.

I don’t agree. So the other view is that nobody (ideally ) should have weapons (what about keeping number of wild animals in check?). Very rare people (armed forces and Police) to be issued weapons in very special circumstances.

Our problem appears to be that every fellow given a weapon uses it wrongfully. As for hunting wild animals, the Police are reputed to indulge in a roaring illegal trade, while an ordinary citizen cannot even distribute the meat of a pestiferous animal he has killed.

The current incident of arrest of Ranjan Ramanayake (RR) reminded me of what happened in Malaysia then. RR may have a lot of “sensitive information”, not really stolen state secrets, but personal information about various scandalous incidents. RR has publicly stated that he would not make allegations without “evidence” and that explains a mass of papers, CD’s etc found in him and may include certain information about the newly elected first family which has not gone public. My attention is drawn to the fact that in an earlier occasion RR had praised certain Police Officers who were in the lime light, now “disgraced”, and that could be a cause to focus on him. One may say that instead of “white vans proper” one can be focussed in the “Yahapalana” style. Let us not forget the fact that had Sajith got elected the situation cannot be any better. (During his father’s time, taking a paparazzi style photograph of the first lady in a swimsuit was death). Even in any so called decent, democratic countries grounds are found to frame. It must be said that the way that RR exposed matters even irked his own party men to the extent that his nomination by his own party in the up and coming parliamentary elections is threatened. There are no allegations of blackmail against him and whistle blowers are a necessary element for a given country to rejuvenate itself from the rot.
