Reforming Islam: Where Should One Start?

By Ameer Ali

Dr. Ameer Ali

The call for reforming Islam, in spite of the confusions surrounding the word “Islam”, is nothing new and Muslim scholars and activists have articulated that call whenever they felt that certain elements of fiqh or rules derived from the Quran and traditions of the Prophet that are supposed to govern Muslim societies, incongruent with modernity and change. In fact, the late Mohammed Arkoun (1928-2010), one of the most influential secular scholars in Islamic studies, titled his “extraordinary” book, “Islam: To Reform Or To Subvert” (2006).

However, there is a new genre of calls arising chiefly from a minority of non-Muslim and once-Muslim agitators, who directly point at the Quran and demand that the reformation should start by “banning” or “excising” the Holy Scripture itself. One of them even compared the Quran to Hitler’s Mein Kampf. This scurrilous demand, apart from its bigotry overtone demonstrates an abject misunderstanding not only of the history of the Quran but also of the centrality that it occupies in the hearts and minds of the entirety of believing Muslims. It adds insults to an injury caused centuries ago when Christendom confronted Islamdom. Adding further to its negativity this call has added another weapon to the propaganda armoury of Jihadists to recruit volunteer fighters for the so called “Crusader-Zionist War”.

forced-marriage-and-islamReform in reality is not a one off event to be accomplished by introducing a new or revised document or an itemised agenda but an ongoing process that keeps a phenomenon updated and relevant to meet the growing challenges of an ever growing stock of human knowledge and civilization. In that sense the history of Islamic thought bears ample testimony to the fact that Islam had been reforming quite intrusively and extensively during the first six centuries of its introduction and superficially and restrictively thereafter.

The presence of different schools of Islamic jurisprudence today both in the Sunni and Shia sects, and the survival of many mystical sects in Islam, if anything, are an indicator of the dynamics of this reforming trend. In the relative ambience of intellectual and spiritual freedom that prevailed in medieval past the founders of these schools and sects were engaged in translating a religion that was originally revealed to Muhammad in Arabic and in Arabia, and making it accommodative and practicable in societies living in different cultural and geographical climes. That is why unlike in Christianity Islam never produced a Protestant Movement which ended in Wars of Religion in Europe. Reform in Islam was an embedded process.

As a result of this process diversity and not sameness became the hallmark of Islam’s religious topography. It was the quintessential achievement of a historically unmatched atmosphere of intellectual tolerance and rational discursiveness that marked the realm of a selected group of enlightened caliphs, sultans and emperors. Under their rule hundreds and thousands of Muslim scientists, philosophers, theologians, poets, thinkers and critics, not to mention the participation and contribution of a comparable galaxy of Christian, Jewish, Buddhist and savants from other faiths, coalesced and cogitated with mutual respect to each other’s expertise, and through the instrument of ijtihad, the Arabic term for independent and critical thinking, produced a civilization unprecedented in any society at least until then.

It was the decline of this reforming process from around the 12th century that made Islam and Muslims enter a prolonged period of intellectual somnolence and material stagnation from which they still have not completely awaken. A civilization that welcomed controversy and diversity, encouraged tolerance and compromise, and accommodated rationalism and individuality received a mortal blow with the ascendancy of politically supported religious orthodoxy. From then on it was not ijtihad but taqlid or unquestioning imitation that ruled knowledge production in Islam. The ideological genesis of today’s violently radical and jihadist Muslim terror outfits can be traced back to this historical reversal.

It has become habitual for Muslims to blame Europeans and European colonization for the decline and stagnation that engulfed Islamdom since the 18th century. Modern scholarship has dismissed this argument as untenable. Muslims were colonized because they became colonizable and that colonizability preceded actual colonization by centuries. Even if colonization is to be blamed how and why then a country like India, which was colonized for a longer period than any Muslim country, managed to come out of it soon and emerged as a competitive power at the world stage when Muslim nations still remain powerless and chaotic?

Therefore, the most crucial reform that Islam needs is to restart that reforming process and resurrect that ambience of freedom for rational discursiveness, intellectual creativity and philosophical pluralism. Freedom of thought and expression is a scarce commodity in Muslim countries. The flight of thousands of intellectuals, writers, academics and scientists from the Muslim world to the West is a colossal brain drain occasioned by an intolerant religious orthodoxy supported by political tyranny. The pithy remark by Abdelwahab Meddeb, the Tunisian Muslim scholar at the University of Paris, “Arab excellence seems to blossom abroad” may be generalised to cover Muslim excellence.

In this reforming process the Quran is neutral. Otherwise, how does one explain the fact that the very Quran which is now being accused of being instrumental in causing all the chaos and bloodshed was the one that was equally instrumental in producing the most cosmopolitan and glorious civilization in the past? The culprit is not the Quran but its use and users. Ironically the reforming light of Islam will be rekindled not from Islamdom but by Muslims living in Christian West.

RE: Reforming Islam: Where Should One Start?

Start with the debate between Al-Ghazali and Ibn Rash, Avorres in the 12th Century, that brought to a head reason and revelation debate, and the Ulama won out due to political reasons, that was the beginning of the Intellectual and Advancement of Muslim Civilization. You will notice that, there was almost no single Arab, who was part of it.

We have seen this with Sinhala “Buddhist” Monks and the Sinhala “Buddhist” Politicians in our time, and we know the calamity it caused in Sri Lanka, the Land of Native Veddah Aethho.

ISIS ideology – Extreme Salafi jihadism.

An extreme violent strain of Wahhabism. Ibn Taymiyyah, ibn Abd al-Wahhab. ISIS are not nihilists. ISIS are not crazy. They have an ideology. Simply treating Isis as a form of “terrorism” or “violent extremism” masks the menace. Merely dismissing it as “nihilistic” reflects a wilful and dangerous avoidance of trying to comprehend, and deal with, its profoundly alluring moral mission to change and save the world.

        http://www.huffingtonpost.com/marty-k…

The Wahhabis stepped in, with almost unlimited financial resources. Wahhabi ideas spread throughout the region not because they have any merit—they don’t—but because they were and remain well funded. We cannot defeat ISIS without defeating the Wahhabi theology that birthed it.

        http://www.thenation.com/article/we-c…

Although ISIS(Daesh) is certainly an Islamic movement, it is neither typical nor mired in the distant past, because its roots are in Wahhabism, a form of Islam practiced in Saudi Arabia that developed only in the 18th century the Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, condemning IS in the strongest terms, has insisted that “the ideas of extremism, radicalism and terrorism do not belong to Islam in any way”.

Other members of the Saudi ruling class, however, look more kindly on the movement, applauding its staunch opposition to Shiaism and for its Salafi piety, its adherence to the original practices of Islam. This inconsistency is a salutary reminder of the impossibility of making accurate generalisations about any religious tradition. In its short history, Wahhabism has developed at least two distinct forms, each of which has a wholly different take on violence.

The Obama administration refuses to make public the censored 28 pages of the congressional intelligence report implicating the Saudi government in the terror strike — defying bipartisan requests from lawmakers — the two investigators who authored the long-secret section will more than likely be called to testify in the lawsuit brought against the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. During the 18th century, revivalist movements sprang up in many parts of the Islamic world as the Muslim imperial powers began to lose control of peripheral territories.

        http://www.newstatesman.com/world-aff…

Like Taymiyyah before him, Abd al-Wahhab believed One of the main tenets of Abd al-Wahhab’s doctrine has become the key idea of takfir. Under the takfiri doctrine, Abd al-Wahhab and his followers could deem fellow Muslims infidels. Takfirism is a centuries-old practice of judging someone to be an unbeliever and rendering them an apostate or hypocrite through the most dogmatic of lenses. Those thirsty for power use it to legitimize inequities and delegitimize anyone who disagrees with their authority. Under the framework of takfirism, ISIL justifies an ideological cleansing of Kurds, Yazidis, Shia, Sufis, and anyone else who does not conform to its religious tyranny.

ISIL is using takfirism to accomplish its goal of ridding the region of “impure” elements — like Christianity — and symbols — like the shrine of Jonah. Takfirism turned violent in the late seventh century with the Kharijites, an early extremist group that rejected Muslims who did not accept their political and religious views. Known for their puritanism and fanaticism, this group engaged in campaigns of harassment and terror. The Kharijites’ violent extremism didn’t last long, as it was quickly dismissed as antithetical to Islam by the independent and authoritative ulema (religious leaders and scholars) of the time. Battle of ideas within Islam. Islamophobia. ISIS ideology.

        Suggestions for a Plan.

        1. Start with the Dirty Muslims and make them Clean Muslims.

Why do Muslims look dirty. Make them clean Muslims like you and most Western Muslims who are liberated from the Mullahs and Ulema.

        http://www.wutang-corp.com/forum/showthread.php?t=79831

        2. Start with the Ulema and Mullahs. Make the study other subjects, especially mathematics, science, philosophy, economics etc.

        3. Ulana and Mullah must be equated to an uneducated dirty person, especially he has a long dirty beard. You need to change the culture.

        4. Make questioning a art of the Culture. Free inquiry a part of the culture.

        5. Add yours….

Ballah, in Pali ‘Guthodilla’ should be rendered ‘cesspool’, answering to Pali ‘Guthakupo’, where you sometimes belong. In Sinhala , it is called Jara.

So you need to get out of this Jara cesspool, and get the river and clean yourself.

        Hey Simon;

If you favor reforming your own (Simon’s)religion Islam , it is your business as a Muslim you should encourage that. But you do not have any right to suggest another religion must be reformed. The Buddhist Clergy will take care of reforming Buddhism and not the “pretentious” Buddhists including the present Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. Such a need has not come-up yet and Buddhism is not in any danger yet. Besides, Simeon you should not expose your vulgarity by denigrating Buddhist monks wearing saffron robes because the true Buddhists cannot separate Lord Buddha, His Doctrine (Dhamma) and his disciples (Sangha).

Let me give you some thing that your religious leaders haven’t taught, It is from your Prophet Mohammed (May peace and blessings of Allah be upon him):

        “Say: O disbelievers!
        I worship not that which ye worship;
Nor worship ye that which I worship.
And I shall not worship that which ye worship.
Nor will ye worship that which I worship.
Unto you your religion, and unto me my religion.”

(An extract of Translations of the Qur’an, Surah 109: )

You may disagree with Ven. Gnanasara Thero’s views. But whether you attack one Buddhist monk or thousand of them, there is no difference, you are attacking my religion Buddhism. You must overcome your hatred towards Buddhists, if you want to be in harmony with your inner peace in a Sinhala-Buddhist country.

“To Reform Islam, firstly the tyrannical hold of the Mullahs on the Muslims should ease. Any who believes in a God, could communicate direct with God, without these intermediaries who are questionable characters.”

      Sufis communicate directly with God.

Wahhabis, Salafis, and their Clones, communicate with their Mullah and Satan, Iblis, Devil.

So, the Wahhabis, Salafis, and their Clones, want to kill Sufis.

It is like the Catholic Church 500 years ago, and Martin Luther Protestant Reformation, go directly to God.

Why do Sunni Wahhabis/Salafis hate Shia and Sufi Muslims?

Is it because Shias and Sufis are too peaceful for you? Is it because they don’t do honor killing like you do? Is it because they don’t believe in war against all people from different religion like you do? Shia and Sufis are the true Muslims who follow the true peaceful teaching of the Quran.

Sunni Wahhabis/Salafis are full of hate and do many evil things.

Why do Sunni Wahhabis/Salafis always bombing Shia and Sufi Mosques? You never see a Shia or Sufi bombing any Sunni Mosque. Why do Sunni Wahhabi/Salafis practise honour killing? Where in the Quran does it support your honour killing?

Wahhanis and Salafis are full of hate which goes against the teaching of the Quran. They are the fake Muslims.

Why do Sunni Wahhabis/Salafis practise this backward culture that has nothing to do with Islam. Why are Sunni Wahhabis/Salafis full of hate which goes against Islam. BECAUSE THEY FOLLOW THE SATAN, IBLIS, DEVIL.

From Where do the Wahhabi Salafis Come from? Najd in Saudi Arabia.

      Hadith of Najd

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hadith_of_Najd

According to two narrations in Sahih Bukhari, Muhammad asks Allah to bless the areas of Bilad al-Sham (Syria) and Yemen. When his companions said “Our Najd as well,” he replied: “There will appear earthquakes and afflictions, and from there will come out the side of the head (e.g. horns) of Satan.”[1][2] In a similar narration, Muhammad again asked Allah to bless the areas Medina, Mecca, Sham, and Yemen and, when asked specifically to bless Najd, repeated similar comments about there being earthquakes, trials, tribulations, and the horns of Satan.

“O Allaah bestow your blessings on our Shaam. O Allaah bestow your blessings on our Yemen.” The people said, “O Messenger of Allaah, and our Najd.” I think the third time the Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, said, “There (in Najd) will occur earthquakes, trials and tribulations, and from there appears the Horn of Satan.”

It has been asserted that this hadith is relating the coming events that shook the Muslim nation, these known as fitnah or ‘trials’. Amongst the trials that arose in Iraq and the east was the martyrdom of Hussein ibn Ali, the grandson of Muhammad, as well as the first battle between the Muslims that also occurred in Iraq. This as well as the tribulations that came along with the multitude of sects that formed in the east, specifically Iraq and Baghdad, being the Qadariyyah, the Jahmiyyah (from Jahm bin Safwan), the spread of the Mu’tazila, and the advent of the emergence of the Shia in opposition to the Sunni Muslims. It has also been identified as where the Dajjal or Antichrist is said to emerge from (according to a narration through Imam Nawawi). There have also been various theories instigated against the people of the modern day region of Saudi Arabia known as ‘Najd’, however, historically and geographically this argument is disputed

    Islam cannot be reformed.

It must go back to its roots and become tolerant Christian.

Whatever good in Islam is overshadowed by the unpredictable, arrogant, filthy etc. behaviour of the large number of the followers and Islam has become a threat to the very safety of the peaceful human existence.

Only thing good in Islam is burring the the dead before the body get cold.

      “Islam cannot be reformed.”

Islam can be reformed, just like Catholicism was reformed by Martin Luther and others. Need a “Marin Luther” of Islam with 95 Theses.

      1. The Devil, Iblis, Satan is in Competition with God, Allah to Mislead the People.

      2. The evil has inserted his many of his verses, into the Quran, by fooling Prophet Mohamed, such as the Satanic Verses, and many other verses, to confuse the Muslims.

      3. The current Wahhabis, Salafis, ISIS and their clones are confused, and have become Agents of the Satan, Iblis, Devil.

      4. The Wahhabis, Salafis, ISIS and their clones, follow Satan, Iblis, Devil’s instructions and kill Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

      5.

      6.

“Try and reform Islam yourself. Start with Islamic rules on male circumcision and female genital mutilation.”

Islam has to be reformed from

          1. Inside, by intelligent Muslims , like Ibn Rash, Averroes, and
          2. Outside , by Non-Muslims and secularists.

          See What happened to Catholicism

          1. From Inside by Martin Luther and Others

    Ameer Ali

Good commentary, but we also need to deal with Wahabi extremists who are fomenting division, discord and destruction not only abroad but in Sri Lanka as well.

There are disturbing features developing in Sri Lanka with Wahabi infiltration, particularly in the Eastern Province and spreading ever so subtly across the country.

The innocent Muslims seem unaware that some criminal elements in the community are lapping up Saudi cash, and subtly propagating Wahabi extremism

No wonder BBS has got its tail up, and all right-minded and peaceful Muslims should help the BBS to eradicate this threat, sooner than later.

I experienced a classic example of Wahabi threat early this year. I wrote to the Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama (CJU) about this on 25 January to which I still haven’t had the courtesy of a reply.

I quote below the full text of my e-mail to the CJU:

    “Assalamu Alaikum!

    Dear Brother

I regularly attend Jummah prayers at the Makola mosque as it is close to where I work.

Last Friday i.e. on 22 January 2016 the Moulana who delivered the Khutba appeared to be quite youthful and new to the mosque.

I was somewhat surprised not only about the topic he dealt with, but was more concerned about the content and aggressive tone of his delivery.

He took it upon himself to describe the Nazrenes (Christians), Yehudis (Jews), Shiites and the Freemasons as enemies of Islam. He went on to assert that all the ills of the Muslim world have been created by one or the other of the aforementioned. He was very vitriolic in the choice of words and cautioned the flock in no uncertain terms.

While I am willing to concede that the young Moulana was over-zealous and a bit over the top, it would perhaps appear to an unbeliever that his “hate speech” was driven by an ISIS agenda.

In my view, even if this preacher had such extreme views, he could have been more diplomatic both in his tenor and choice of language, without mentioning his targets. I wonder whether he would have been so intrepid as to attack the Buddhists of this country!

While we all know that in Islam there is no compulsion in religion and that we should respect other faiths, I was wondering whose agenda this preacher was pursuing.

I shall be most grateful to receive your comments on this matter.”

Ameer Ali, while what is happening world-wide makes intersting reading can you please focus on what is happening in Sri Lanka in your next commentary?

      Thanks the comment.

      Why?

Because Wahhabis, Salafis, and their clones, ISIS, ISIL, Taliban, Boko Haram etc. are agents of the Satan, Iblis, Devil.

      Read the Hadith of Najd.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hadith_of_Najd

      al-azhar cleric about wahabis/salafis

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAvWmZfGjTU

Wahhabi Sack of Karabala, that killed 5,000 True Muslims, Shia.

Wahhabis, Salafis are ISIS. ISIS is Wahhabi. They both follow the Satan, Iblis, Devil. Tell every Muslim and non-Muslim alike, you you come across this fact, that the Wahhabis, Salafis and ISIS follow the Satan. Iblis, Devil.

So, ISIS is really, Iblisic State of Iraq and Syria. They are doing Iblis, Satan, Devil’s bidding.

      https://ballandalus.wordpress.com/2014/08/02/the-wahhabi-sack-of-karbala-1802-a-d/

Do the Shia and Sufi Muslim go and kill Sunni Muslims and destroy their religious places ? No. Why? Because they follow God, Allah. Then why do Wahhabis, Salafis and their clones ISIS kill Shia and Sufis and destroy their religious places? Because they follow the Iblis, Satan. Devil.

According to an eye-witnesses account, J.B. Rousseau in his Description du Pachalik du Baghdad Suivie d’une Notice Historique sur les Wahabis (Paris, 1809), the events that transpired were as follows:

“We have recently seen a horrible example of the Wahhabis’ cruel fanaticism in the terrible fate of the mosque of Imam Husayn. Incredible wealth was known to have accumulated in that town. The Persian shahs have, perhaps, never had something like that in their treasury. For centuries, the mosque of Imam Husayn was known to have received donations of silver, gold, jewels, a great amount of rarities…Tamerlane even spared that place. Everybody knew that the most part of the rich spoils that Nadir Shah had brought back from his Indian campaign had been transferred to the mosques of Imam Husayn and Imam Ali together with his own wealth. Now, the enormous wealth that has accumulated in the former has been exciting the Wahhabis’ avidity for some time. They have been continuously dreaming of looting that town [Karbala] and were so sure of success that their creditors fixed the debt payment to the happy day when their hopes would come true.

That day came at last…12,000 Wahhabis suddenly attacked the mosque of Imam Husayn; after seizing more spoils than they had ever seized after their greatest victories, they put everything to fire and sword…The elderly, women, and children—everybody died by the barbarians’ sword. Besides, it is said that whenever they saw a pregnant woman, they disemboweled her and left the fetus on the mother’s bleeding corpse. Their cruelty could not be satisfied, they did not cease their murders and blood flowed like water. As a result of the bloody catastrophe, more than 4000 people perished. The Wahhabis carried off their plunder on the backs of 4000 camels. After the plunder and murders they destroyed the Imam’s shrine and converted it into a trench of abomination and blood. They inflicted the greatest damage on the minarets and the domes, believing those structures were made of gold bricks.” [Rosseau, Description, pp. 74–75]

//“Ironically the reforming light of Islam will be rekindled not from Islamdom but by Muslims living in Christian West.”//

      Yes.

The Average IQ of Muslims living in the West is about 2 standard deviations higher than the Average IQ of Muslim living in the Muslim Countries. Their intellectual capacity is much higher, and they will ultimately have the critical mass needed for reformation.

Example. The sighting of the moon for the First day of Ramadan was traditionally when somebody sees the crescent moon, in the beginning of the month. This was fine before modern astronomy.

Now the Western Muslims, use Astronomy to predict when the crescent moon is to be expected, and base their first day of Ramadhan on that. The traditionalists do not like that. Why? Because they are mostly Ulema who do not know much about astronomy.

Hello Copernicus, Galileo and Kepler. Where you. The Ulema need you.

Firstly religions can’t be reformed. What’s written in the Quran is written, end of story. The problem is how it is interpreted by some. For non-Muslims, it only sends a signal of confusion and fear. It is unthinkable how on the most holiest day is picked by one Muslim to blast another Muslim into smithereens. It is not understandable why the failure to recite Verses from Quran delivered death sentences to innocent expats in Bangladesh. The criminality and brutality of those who commit to an interpretation of Islam, is also the responsibility of other Muslims, who believe that it is a religion of peace. The non-Muslims, the proverbial outsider, is only considering this as a threat and are doing the best to eliminate it. You can’t blame them for just doing that.

There is absolutely no need to reform Islam , Islam itself is the final reform form of the Vedic and Abrahamic religions and all the philosophies and Mysticisms together .

There is no need to be in loggerheads or wanting to eliminate Wahhabism or any ism or any distinctive practice, system within Islam’s framework .

What is urgently required is a proper Interpretation of the Qu’ran in the most simplest language.

Ijtihad – today is a great necessity for the current times of turbulences Muslims are facing .

If Islam is a religion which is to stay till the end of time, then there must always be some people who can guide the Muslims in the changing circumstances of time and of place.

The Scholars of all the Schools of Islam need to come together and agree on a fiqh , which verses of the Quran that need to be deactivated as it is is no longer required in the current era we are living in, and also to come up in agreement upon qiyas as to which of the traditions can be altered to suit the environment to avoid culture clash and evert the rise of mistrust and suspicion and can create a peace and harmony .

    May peace prevail

      1. “There is absolutely no need to reform Islam , Islam itself is the final reform form of the Vedic and Abrahamic religions and all the philosophies and Mysticisms together “

However, there is ample data that show that the Quran was corrupted by the Devil, Iblis, Satan, on many occasions by fooling Prophet Mohamed, such as the Satanic verse, and later Medina Verses that were introduced by Satan, Iblis, that abrogated the earlier Meccan verses.

The idiotic scholars cannot recognize that. They still think that the Sun Goes around the Earth.

Furthermore, there are verses that are not correct, such as Adam and Eve and mountains being pegged, etc.

      2. “There is no need to be in loggerheads or wanting to eliminate Wahhabism or any ism or any distinctive practice, system within Islam’s framework .”

There is an absolute need to eliminate Wahhabism, Salafism and its Clones, as they follow the satanic verses that were introduced on the sly.

      3. “What is urgently required is a proper Interpretation of the Qu’ran in the most simplest language.”

The proper interpretation of the Quran in the simplest Language says that the Quran was corrupted by the Devil, Satan, Iblis, and the Wahhabi, Salafis, and their clones follow the Satanic verses and the verses introduced on the sly.

      4. “The Scholars of all the Schools of Islam need to come together and agree on a fiqh , which verses of the Quran that need to be deactivated as it is is no longer required in the current era we are living in, and also to come up in agreement upon qiyas as to which of the traditions can be altered to suit the environment to avoid culture clash and evert the rise of mistrust and suspicion and can create a peace and harmony.”

Can agree on that. However, what do you do with the Stupid and Idiotic Scholars. Saudi Arabia is Full of them.

Hamid al -Ghazali, an eminent scholar 900 years ago was wrong. So Was the Head Wahhabi Cleric who climbed the Earth was flat and the sun goes around the earth.

So with Junk, idiotic scholars, one gets Junk, Wahhabi-Salafi junk.

This is what Ibn Rushd, Averroes, said 900 years ago, about the Theologians, the so-called scholars.

Philosophers have Reason and (functioning) brains, and Theologians (scholars) have Theology and (non-functioning) brains.

Ibn Rushd (Arabic: ابن رشد‎‎; April 14, 1126 – December 10, 1198), full name (Arabic: أبو الوليد محمد ابن احمد ابن رشد‎, translit. ʾAbū l-Walīd Muḥammad Ibn ʾAḥmad Ibn Rushd‎), often Latinized as Averroes (/əˈvɛroʊˌiːz/), was a medieval Andalusian polymath. He wrote on logic, Aristotelian and Islamic philosophy, theology, the Maliki school of Islamic jurisprudence, psychology, political and Andalusian classical music theory, geography, mathematics, and the mediæval sciences of medicine, astronomy, physics, and celestial mechanics. Ibn Rushd was born in Córdoba, Al Andalus (present-day Spain), and died at Marrakesh in present-day Morocco. His body was interred in his family tomb at Córdoba. The 13th-century philosophical movement based on Ibn Rushd’s work is called Averroism.

Ibn Rushd was a defender of Aristotelian philosophy against Ash’ari theologians led by Al-Ghazali. Although highly regarded as a legal scholar of the Maliki school of Islamic law, Ibn Rushd’s philosophical ideas were considered controversial in Ash’arite Muslim circles.[8] Whereas al-Ghazali believed that any individual act of a natural phenomenon occurred only because God willed it to happen, Ibn Rushd insisted phenomena followed natural laws that God created.

Ibn Rushd had a greater impact on Christian Europe: he has been described as the “founding father of secular thought in Western Europe” and was known by the sobriquet the Commentator for his detailed emendations to Aristotle. Latin translations of Ibn Rushd’s work led the way to the popularization of Aristotle.

Nice refreshing look on the crisis. There are 3 million Muslims living and thriving in the USA from across the world, including Sri Lankan muslims, African, Arab and even Indonesian ones. Almost every big city where there are muslim people there are mosques. Every campus I worked there were holy mosques to accomodate Muslim Americans and Muslim international students. I get my cut chicken from an Egyptian lady who runs a Halal store. Why? To make chicken curry it is best to get natural chicken skinned and cut with the bones still in it. Far tastier than bland watered down grocery store chicken. Reform and call for reform will have to come from western moderate muslims. If there are passages in the Quaran that are hateful and calls for killing people then that is that. No one can amend those texts but there must a contextual dialogue and open discussion. Why do the ISIS savage barabarians only emphasize the hateful side of it?

There is a need to have an honest discussion in nations like Sri Lanka too. There is fear Arabization and Wahabi radical salafists spreading hate. Who will stop them ?

Ignore facists in yellow robes. Somarama assassinated christian to buddhist convert SWRD. Somarama was a monk. Wiratu is a thug racist monk. Gnanasara is a thug with a huge penis complex or some identity crisis. Azath Salley is a rabble rouser hate monger who threatens to silence free speech. Free speech cannot be silenced. If someone wants to laugh at Buddha or Mohammed they have every right to do so. There cannot be fatwas like how pathetic Middle Easterners do; Iran issued a fatwa on Salman Rushdie. Why? Instead of blaming the west, or christianity or buddhists Islamists in Sri Lanka need to examine themselves. If they are even the slightest majority or the majority like in ?Kattankudy they want different rules than for rest of the nation. Why? In Denmark Arab immmigrant Thug Muslims threatened local White Danish people to shut down their bars and stop serving alcohol and wanted to impose Sharia law. Who the fuck are these savages to do that? If I want to booze I can have a right to booze within the laws of the land. Yes The so called Sinhala buddhist thug extremists are dangerous. So are the Saffron Hindu RSS brigades now actively spreading in India and killing muslims for eating beef.

Extremism is dangerous. Right now it is a cold hard fact that ISIS islamic jihadis are using parts of the Quran to murder, rape and enslave people and most of their victims are Muslims. Take the 2 incidents in Bangladesh; take Turkey and Iraq. The murders are committed BY MUSLIM EXTREMISTS. Stop blaming Jews and Christians if your Arab savages cannot behave in a civilized manner.

The Muslims were misled by Hamid Al=Ghazali 900 years ago, when he claimed that Revelation Supersedes Reason, Observations and data. It was downhill for Muslims since then, intellectually. The Ulama and Mullah embraced it.

However, it was the beginning of the Mullah, Ulama Hegemony and Supremacy.

So, start with the cause and core-problem. The Ulama and Mullah, who claim to have the rights to interpret the Quran and Issue Fatwas.

A very stupid article by a western boot licking rand corp employee.

    1. Islam didnt regress in the 12th or 13th century, even with the mongol invasion of baghdad, it defeated the mongols in andaluth, syria. saved the world from the mongol hords who were babarians to the core. When the christian crusaders were runnig away who saved europe from these babarians.
    2. The ottomans were the empire and khalifeth till 1924, they were dismantled by the european west by stealth. how? by polluting Islamic sharia law enshrined in the caliphet by having there agents getting into important posisions in the empire, eg kamal attuk, the young turks, commis. accepting the gays in 1858 etc…
3.Islamic law in the pure form is progressive and in this day and age only being practiced in the Islamic state, which is a threat to the west.
so we see all this moderate western muslims coming with crap theories.

I doubt the Muslims in Sri Lanka can reform or change the extremists who are basically un Islamic in their actions. What they can do however, is continue to live as Sri Lankan Muslim, REJECTING extremists views by terror groups who kill innocent people, and the influences of nations like Saudi Arabia, who have far too much control over how our Muslims dress and behave. Sri Lankan Muslims do not have to adhere to Saudi rules on dress and follow their culture. We have our own culture and to live in harmony in a multi religious nation, we have to make sure we do not offend our fellow citizens, by adapting foreign attire, that was never worn for generations. Like everything else all religions must reform to keep up with the modern world, but unfortunately people are afraid to question the old establishments. The Holy books and Scriptures were written over a thousand years ago, and basically the texts do not all relate to the present events, modern technology, and a new world.

It is easy for Muslims to live in this country enjoying the available freedom to voice their views and function in a very ethnocentric manner against other races. Just understand that it wont be pleasant living in an Islamic country.

I read in todays paper that Islamic dress has been banned in Switzerland. Just a matter of time before the rest of the world join them. Even the islamic countries will eventually question their belief system.

All religions need reform. Some have started to. Congratulations to Ameer for starting a conversation on reforming Sri Lankan Islam.

In “Ostentatious Iftars & Obnoxious Poverty: Changing Religious Topography of Sri Lankan Muslims” (Colombo Telegraph 01 July) Ameer Ali wrote “Among Islam’s celebrated five pillars namely, the confession of faith, daily prayers, fasting, obligatory charity and pilgrimage to Mecca, fasting from pre-dawn to dusk for thirty days during the month of Ramadhan represents material sacrifice for the sake of the Divine.” Islam is the only religion which stipulates a pilgrimage to a holy place. The pilgrimage to Mecca has passed its “Use-by” date and need not be insisted on.

Fishing for sport, trophy hunting and the like are cruel. So is Halal slaughter. Ameer can start questioning the need for male and female Genital mutilations. Should four wives be allowed if four husbands is not. Does Triple Talag divorce denigrate the status of women?

  • 8
    1

    Ameer Ali,
I’m a muslim. Though, I’m weary of using that term as I don’t feel it truly represents the religion Allah gave us.

Islam was already reformed during the Ottoman Empire.
Where did shariah come from? During the Ottoman empire, they had various books on shariah based off the hadith. Some of them conflicted so the “scholars” at that time combined the books together and this is what we call shariah. We enforce shariah as if it is the law of Allah but Allahs laws don’t conflict. To me, that makes shariah law anti-islamic.

I mentioned the hadith. Where did the hadith come from?
Hadith was written down about 200+ years after our Prophet died. Before that, it was passed via word of mouth (there’s a hadith in Muslim or Bukhari where the prophet forbade writing down hadith…but we eventually did it anyway!). And how do they determine the authenticity of hadith? This is done by the rules of Isnad. The rules of Isnad are so flimsy…I honestly can’t imagine how we are following hadith…if someone looks at the rules of Isnad, they will see that the hadith, at best, could be 50% right and 50% wrong but we follow it more closely than we do the Quran.

For example, the Quran does not allow stoning.
In the hadith, the punishment for adultery is stoning to death. Actually, the Quran explicitly dictates the punishment for adultery which is 100 lashes. But we ignore the Quran and follow the hadith. Mans words, based on Isnad trumps Allahs divine decree. I can also point out a few contradictions in the hadith, to anyone who wants to know. That reminds me of the verse 4:82 in the Quran.

We proudly tell the world that the Quran is the only holy book that has remained unchanged. That may be true, but the religion has been corrupted because of hadith.

If, after all I’ve said above, you still think the hadith is a valid part of Islam, then let’s go to the ultimate source.
    The Quran claims:
    1. It has not neglected anything (6:38)
    2. It has explained every kind of example (18:54)
    3. It has explained everything clearly (16:89)
    4. It has explained everything in detail (41:3)
    5. Its verses are perfected and expounded (11:1)

If the Quran is correct, then we don’t need any supporting material apart from the Quran. If it’s incorrect, then we need the hadith.

Everything necessary to be a muslim is in the Quran. If it doesn’t exist in the Quran (like some of our prayer actions) then it’s not required.

Accepting the Quran is easy for me but the hadith is so violent, misogynistic and manipulative. I will never teach my child the hadith for this reason: because I think the Quran is the word of Allah and the hadith attempts to corrupt His word.

Fahim Knight, you claim to Jehan that worshipping an imaginary friend is superior to idol worship. Scholars like Dr. Ameer Ali have the best of intentions to reform a religion that has become synonymous with terrorism, barbarism, cruelty, medieval and grossly lacking in human rights. Sadly there are many Fahim Knights who are stuck in a rut and will not entertain change. Just last week in America, an Arab from Abu Dhabi, in Muslim garb, in USA for medical treatment, was nearly arrested after a complaint from a bystander who felt threatened as he looked too Islamic. You can no longer blame this on the ignorant Americans but the fanatic Muslims who have dragged your religion into the gutter.

The underlying problem is that most Muslims do not follow the Quran at all.

For most Muslims their religious sources are the Hadith and Sunnah. These secondary sources were compiled between 100 to 300 years after the prophet died.

The Quran itself is actually read by obtaining context from the Hadith and Sunnah. The Quran’s own context is ignored or considered to be inadequate.

The Quran is an abandoned book, and its message has been long absent in contemporary Muslim scholarship.

Perhaps this is the reason why the Quran prophesizes that during the Day of Judgment the prophet will say: “And the Messenger cried out: O my Lord! surely my people have treated this Quran as a forsaken thing.” (25:30)

Presently, practiced Islam is the Arab culture. Arab culture was very very hostile to women. They burried women child live because they wanted boy children in order to have a big army.

Arab culture is the very violent. so that culture is practiced by muslims in middle east, Africa and and now in Asia.

That may work in Africa and middle east. but, not in Asia, Europe or in americas.
