The Vatican is bracing itself for a rent boy scandal after a convicted pedophile priest apparently sought vengeance by informing on other child abusers in the Roman clergy.
Don Patrizio Poggi, who served a five-year sentence for abusing five 14 and 15-year-old boys at his parish on the outskirts of the Italian capital, has reportedly handed names to police.
Italian investigators have opened an inquiry into claims by the convicted paedophile priest that an underage prostitution ring has been operating inside the Holy Roman Church with clergymen hiring rentboys for sex inside churches. So far, four people have formally been placed under investigation by Rome magistrates.
The Vatican has denied Don Patrizio Poggi’s allegations over the existence of an underage prostitution ring.

Why don’t they just get rid of celibacy.The answer to the problem of homosexuality in the church and sangha.
In this day and age when gay marriages are legalised,it is incomprehensible that a person is denied marriage and raising a family just because he has chosen a particular profession.
Also what right has the men who control priesthood to deny women from entering it.God created man and woman,not only man as this sex discrimination implies.We know that all these scriptures are all written by men who claim that god said this and god said that.If god did say all these things at that time to them it is high time god appeared again even if it is a bit late by about let us see 2000 years and lets know to the men who control the clergy that the rule still stands that celibacy in and women out.The we all can have confidence that indeed all these scriptures were written according to the will of god and not according to the will of some men who decided for us what god should say and not say to us.

hawkins,because the same problems in bhuddhist sangha too,at least from what i know of what is happening in srilanka bhuddhist priesthood.Here too monks are expected to be celibate but have sex with children who have been ordained as monks because their parents are unable to feed them.However unlike in the west it is not brought to light because the authorities hush them up.

Stewart,you did not get the point.When you shut the door on marriage then you narrow down the applicants to homosexuals,loners,deviants etc.You are blocking out normal heterosexual men and women from entering the priesthood because they balk at the celibacy rule.As a result the clergy gets flooded with homosexuals.Also by blocking out women the applicants are halved in addition to the fact that it is downright sex discrimination because it is a job that women can do.
So the quality in the priesthood is poor because we have effectively shut more than 90 per cent of the population from becoming applicants.
Now they are really scraping the barrel it seems.They have to go to africa and recruit priests for western countries because their own people are shunning the priesthood because of the barriers to entry.
I personally know people who passionately wanted to serve the lord but dropped the idea because of the celibacy rule.
I’am a hindu and our priest at the temple is a happily married man with two kids.His job is to come and do the pooja’s etc with sanskrit versus which we can’t understand.We don’t have such homosexual problems etc but we do have problems in finding priests because they have to be of brahmin caste only.Now slowly we are getting rid of this rule because finding younger brahmins to do this job is not easy now.
So adaptation is important to the changing environment.

I think the case against castration is that celibacy is about the will to resist temptation. One might as well ask why God allows temptation if it is a sin to give in to that temptation.
Personally, I don’t think celibacy in the Christian priesthood should continue since there are no Biblical grounds for it. There is an argument for it in Buddhism where the call is to distance oneself from all physical ties; marriage being one of the most binding.

The incidents in non-celibate priesthoods seems to be far less than amongst the celibate. If you disagree, I’d like to see some statistics. Lifting the ban on marriage may not solve all problems, but it certainly will help solve the problem of placing men in an environment that is sexually repressive. When you make all natural sexual outlets illegal, sexual urges will find unnatural outlets.
