Revolution Without Bloodshed & Violence: Can AKD & The NPP Deliver It?

By Vishwamithra

“The successful revolutionary is a statesman, the unsuccessful one a criminal.” ~ Erich Fromm

Revolutions have always been associated with bloodshed, violence, riots and breakdown of law and order. What follows a revolution may be an entirely a new order, new vistas and new hope. A change of regime, a change of class or even a total system change would follow, another set of new rulers replacing the old.

Ever since the much celebrated Russian October Revolution which displaced the Czars from power, the communists led by Lenin, Trotsky and Stalin assumed power and replaced the Czarist dictatorship with a so-called ‘dictatorship of the proletariat’. Lenin did not come to the seat of power via a democratically held universal franchise. Those who took part in the revolution were fully educated on the lines of dialectical materialism, made aware of the fact that they were installing that ‘dictatorship of the proletariat’. At the time Russia did not know how a system of government founded on democratic principles could be elected. They willfully ‘selected’, as opposed to ‘elected’, another dictatorship, one of the so-called proletariat.

Fidel Castro and his band of revolutionaries banished Fulgencio Batista , another military dictator, and established a Marxist-Communist dictatorship in Cuba. In Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh, the military commander who withstood America, presumed to be the greatest military power of the day, during the infamous Vietnam war, installed a Communist revolutionary rule.

Then in 1949, the great Mao Zedong was the undisputed head of the Chinese revolutionary movement who replaced Chiang Kai-sheck, drove him to Formosa (Taiwan) and installed himself as the dictator with all the powers a ruler could enjoy in any circumstances. Chairman Mao became the founder of the People’s Republic of China. That power Mao enjoyed after the revolution, in his own words, streamed through the barrel of the gun.

Lenin, Castro, Ho Chi Minh and Mao, all of them were die-hard, determined communists who told their respective soldiers that they were replacing a cruel and murderous regime with a dictatorship of the proletariat; the phrase dictatorship of the proletariat was first used by Karl Marx in a series of articles which were later republished as The Class Struggle in France 1848–1850. The term dictatorship indicates full control of the means of production by the state apparatus. Friedrich Engels considered the Paris Commune (1871), which controlled the capital city for two months before being suppressed, an example of the dictatorship of the proletariat. There are multiple popular trends for this political thought, all of which believe the state will persist following the revolution for its enforcement capabilities.

Nevertheless, all these theoretical approaches to the definitions of communist-based rule are redundant today. Marxism-Leninism is not even in the vocabulary of the communist countries today. The collapse of Russian communism and its replacement by a plain political thug like Putin has made it an item of anachronism; China’s Deng Xiaoping revolutionized the outdated theories of Maoism in his own way and today’s China is a thriving communist dictatorship with a quasi-capitalist economy. Vietnam, albeit they call themselves a communist country, is a fast developing economy that pursues profits, a dreaded word in the old communist world. Only Cuba is rotting away with her own style of communism and a closed economy.

Yet the common and cruel thread that weaves all these communist countries together is the way in which they are being governed by dictatorship. The rulers may call themselves as ‘elected’ leaders, but in actual fact, they are far from it. Those who are supposed to elect them are not given a multiple or binary choice. Only a single choice; a choice without an option.

That is the historical context within which we need to discuss the distinct appearance of entry into the enclosures of Executive Presidential powers of Anura Kumara Dissanayake (AKD), head of the National People’s Power (NPP). AKD’s recent history is being questioned by his opponents, quite pertinently so, as to his allegiance to the old Marxist principles, both of economic policies and governance methodology. Such questioning is pertinent too and if found not satisfactory, there is every reason a reasonable voter would have second thoughts about voting for him.

But the real situation and the ground level context has changed drastically so much, one would find it exceedingly difficult to differentiate between the policies and principles of governance between the two fractions – Ranil-Sajith combo and AKD. Yet there is a nagging doubt, especially amongst the private sector businessmen and the so-called political pundits whether the NPP economic principles and policies would do damage and harm to the smooth running of the open economy. Consequently, this segment of our population has resorted to unjustifiable and unprovable innuendo as to the would-be execution of Marxist-Socialist policies bordering on the infamous collectivization of all privately held lands in the Soviet Union in the aftermath of the October Revolution.

Such political propaganda could be extremely harmful for the cause of the NPP and its desired result at the Presidential Elections. AKD has made it crystal clear at the recently held Business Forum at which many leading private sector entrepreneurs were present, that allegiance to the smooth flow of business activities is unshakable and that they did not need to to be afraid of an NPP administration. However, both AKD and the NPP’s economic hierarchy must realize that at this eleventh hour your political opponents would resort to the meanest and most dishonest propaganda tactics. The NPP must be ready for that and the retort must be immediate and hard. Michelle Obama’s ‘when they go low we go high’ slogan would not mean anything in the context of Sri Lankan electioneering. Adoption of a premise of ‘when they hit hard, we must hit harder’ would not be too much to ask! Silence on the part of the NPP would only add to the veracity of the allegations made. That is a stark reality of electioneering.

If AKD and the NPP come out victorious on September 21st night, they will have accomplished a unique task: that of launching and be successful in a true revolution without bloodshed and violence. National People’s Power is a left-wing political party. They may not be blindly in league with Marxian principles of governance and economics. In a fast developing world, the lines that divide capitalism and socialism have progressively become thinner. Profit as the fuel of the economic machinery and its validity in the twenty first century has surpassed all Marxian theories. Profit is no more a ‘no-no’ even amongst so-called left-oriented politicians and economists.

When profit is the motive, the whole argument for social justice and economic equitability becomes wholly subjective, absolutely reliable on the person or persons who are charged with the task of performing it. Left-wing pundits and theoreticians might argue that that is not the way in which Marx and Engels pontificated; yet such pontification may have been based on dialectical materialism where the total flow of society is evolving forward and ‘contradictions’ is the main organic methodology of such an evolution process. But such arguments may sound highly scholarly and erudite which could be argued about at the inner rooms of libraries and theoretical fora but not on the street corners and rural hamlets in today’s Sri Lanka.

In dialectical materialism, contradiction, as derived by Karl Marx, usually refers to an opposition of social forces. This concept is one of the three main points of Marxism. Mao Zedong held that capitalism is internally contradictory because different social classes have conflicting collective goals. These contradictions stem from the social structure of society and inherently lead to class conflict, economic crisis and eventually revolution, the existing order’s overthrow and the formerly oppressed classes’ ascension to political power. “The dialectic asserts that nothing is permanent and all things perish in time. Dialectics is the “logic of change” and can explain the concepts of evolution and transformation. Materialism refers to the existence of only one world. It also verifies that things can exist without the mind.

All these high-sounding socialist theories aside, what is pertinent to the current environs of Sri Lanka and in the context of the Presidential Elections is whether the NPP can transform Sri Lanka, its ailing economy and rotting political culture into a reasonably workable polity. What awaits on September 21st is not merely a Presidential Election at which the country decides to empower one candidate to run the country for the next five years. It’s larger than that.

The NPP has taken the challenge of installing a system change, ensuring a new dimension and new system of governance and a new economy, in other words engaging itself in a political revolution without bloodshed and violence. It is a very tall undertaking. The challenge is not merely ensuring victory at the elections; the real challenge is governing the country with reasonable balance and reasonable intelligence. A doctrinaire approach to resolving our nagging issues, as adopted by our past leftist leaders such as NM Perera, Colvin R de Silva and Peter Keuneman will once again take us to the abyss and in such an event, the next revolution will be bloody and violent for sure.

As at today, all indications are that a greater majority of the people in Sri Lanka seem to be eager to elect AKD as our next President, thereby establishing a revolutionary change in our governing system. A long brewing a battle between the elites and non-elites, one between the haves and have-nots, urban vs rural is bound to climax in the wee hours of September 22nd 2024. It’s time to make our plans, not for tomorrow, but for the day after.

… whether the NPP can transform Sri Lanka, its ailing economy
That is too much to expect. Economy is different kind of animal.
Transforming the economy is more arduous than winning an election, particularly so with a socialist agenda.

NPP will get elected without bloodshed, unless some drastic things happen, and if they are denied victory which they deserve, it will end up in bloodshed. Coming to power has nothing to do with governance. There is dissent among members of NPP and it is likely the dominant partner JVP will call the shots resulting in displeasure. They say that they are for system change, but are ignoring Tamil demand for system change from unitary to federal set up.
For the following reasons NPP will not deliver:
      1. Eradicating corruption: They may succeed to some extent, but they will only be punishing sprats and not sharks.
      2. Economy – At present there is little hope for revival, whichever party comes to power. NPP will more likely to align with China and Russia, and take the country to pre 77 days.
      3. Tamil problem – NPP has no clear cut policy on this. They have ruled out war crimes investigation and are silent on return of lands occupied by security forces. They are just talking about implementing of 13th amendment but silent on merger or powers. So Tamils are going to agitate and any attempt to put down dissent by force will exacerbate the problem.
      4. Geopolitics – They will align with China and antagonise India, where country will end up like Maldives or Bangladesh.

Cuba isn’t a closed economy by choice. I get white Westerners not wanting to acknowledge the damning sanctions the US continues to put on them, but I don’t know why someone from our neck of the woods would want to.

      Thanks.
Cuba is not alone in that category.
The US has been at choking several economies because they defy its imperialist orders.
Cuba has survived for more than 3 decades, with its economic ups and downs, despite the fall of the USSR, on which it relied for its economic stability.
Venezuela faced a quarter century of US bullying, harsh sanctions, attempted coups and destabilization moves. Now the economy is predicted to grow by 10%.
Defiance is the only way to overcome US bullying.

“But the real situation and the ground level context has changed drastically so much, one would find it exceedingly difficult to differentiate between the policies and principles of governance between the two fractions – Ranil-Sajith combo and AKD.”
It is good that AKD’s devoted publicist Vishwamitra has realised this. AKD has slowly been drifting towards the same positions espoused by Sajith and RW.
For example, AKD now even says that he will develop SLT with foreign participation. He says Sri Lankans lack some business skills that foreigners have. AKD now says he will work with the IMF.
But the question is, will the likes of Lalkantha, Tilvin, or Handunnetti work with AKD?
If the policies of the three main contenders are the same, the only difference is that RW and SP both have experienced teams on board. AKD has mostly inexperienced amateurs like Harshana Suriyapperuma and Chaturanga Abeysinghe, who cannot even hold their own in public debates.

What is the outcome of experienced Teams since 1948?
      Buddhist Sinhala Fundamentalism.
Breakdown of law, breakdown of judiciary and breakdown of Security.
      Breakdown of Peace.
      Bankruptcy.
      Poverty.

What have RW’s and SP’s “experienced teams on board” to offer?

Whatever AKD pledges, the economic and geopolitical realities will by and large determine the course of an NPP government. AKD will finally rely on people with some expertise in economic matters.

        SJ,
It is beginning to look as if “geopolitical realities” trump even AKD. I don’t think there is going to be much milk and honey in the neat future, whoever wins in a few weeks.

So why did the exchange rate keep going up to 270 during Evil administered Yahapalanaya time. Why did Evil sell the Hangbangtota Port to China instead of borrowing money and keeping the port within the hand of Appe Aanduwa. The central bank robbery was because of the friction between Evil and the IMF at that time. So Yahapalanaya sought, following Old Rowdy King, the most expensive of bond issuing. The Yahapanaya government wanted Rs1 B for immediate import needs. They issued bonds. The corrupted way Ravi issued the bonds, Banks subscribed to 11B. Anura must give guarantee to the Singapore government and bring Mahendran and break open all the secret deals Ravi and Evil did that time. Media said that between 106-172 checks were written to all political figures at that time. People should know the name of whom Aloysius paid checks from the PTL bank book. Chandra had ended up saying the Yahapalanaya partners, the Royal Rowdies, didn’t know how to manage foreign exchange. Why did Langkang end up being listed as Money Laundering heaven by EU and FATF?

        Malli,
“So why did the exchange rate keep going up to 270 during Evil administered Yahapalanaya time. “
It wasn’t. It was 182 per USD in 2018.
Bondscam again? OK, since you seem like an intelligent person, please explain to me (I am a bit slow, as you know) how Aloysius lending Rs.11 billion to the Central Bank was “most expensive of bond issuing”. Perhaps you can be the first person on this forum to explain this great mystery. Congratulations in advance.

Why, during NCM, during Jihadi wartime, during the Unconstitutional coup, and 2019 Presidential election loss, Evil expressed willingness to hand over the PM position to Old Rowdy King? Why did Evil try to prevent Valaiththodam from standing for Presidential election, so he split with Parliamentary election? What happened to the MIG Case? Evil forced Sumanthiran to get out, and Hitler King was let go.
Anura should form a true government and put all Rowdy Royals, Evil, Ravi, Harsha, ………..all other MPs, whoever were in the parliament from 2010. .
When you are reminded of what went on in the past, you say it’s all old talk. That is your problem. Nobody can help you, but all the criminals must be investigated.
Anura should not start investigating these guys right away. They will topple the cart and horses, because at this time they have too much power, which they accumulated for the past 76 years. He should care about the 30% crowd, which is below the poverty level. (Even that number is from the most fraudulent organization, the Central Bank. If somebody shows some evidence and says the poverty level is 50%, I can believe that.) Anura should prepare a schedule of priorities to deal with the issues. When he comes to power, he must start to make the people happy and should try to gain a 2nd term with the people’s consent.

I would say RW and SP have teams of experienced crooks on board. Not so in the case of AKD.

Revolution Without Bloodshed & Violence: Can AKD & The NPP Deliver It?

TO SEE AKD & NPP DELIVER THE PEOPLE OF SRI LANKA MUST VOTE FOR THEM
For too long, the people of this country have voted for the UNP and Pohottuwa, driven by emotional promises and people voting under the drus emotion that are said by the leader and the same empty, and knows BLAST happeining and silent.

“For years, we’ve trusted the UNP and Pohottuwa, only to face broken promises and growing debt. Now, people are looking to AKD and the NPP as a new hope for change. But can they deliver the revolution we need, without violence or bloodshed? The future of our nation depends on real action, not empty words. It’s time for leaders to be accountable—if not, our children will bear the cost.”
AKD and NPP need to show us that they can be different – not just with words, but with actions.
    People power has to work

    Deliver gasoline at Rs50,000 a tank-full?

Gasoline may be freely available without queues …….. but can people, industry afford it?

Rs 50,000 is 1/4 of Native’s dowry: he thought he’s set for life. ……. Now he can afford only 4 tanks of gas.

No wonder, he just cant stand the sight of women.

    Pretty reasonable.

          AKD said
“Parliament was convened on September 3. That is the last session of Parliament for more than 150 MPs. If I win, I will not convene Parliament on October 8 as scheduled. Parliament will be convened only after a general election. More than 150 MPs will not be re-elected this time. The NPP will form a government with a two-thirds majority,” dailymirror.lk 6 September 2024

Those Marxist days when they took over from the monarchist aristocrats, taxation of the elite was an unknown concept – it was all about killing them and taking back the wealth. Nowadays, most countries implement a wealth tax when their countries are falling into bankruptcy, even the capitalistic ones like UK and France. In US, it is a continuous play between capitalistic and social democratic values because they have vibrant means of entrepreneurial creations they can sell to the rest of the world. Unbelievable that Sri Lanka continuously tries to play around with American modeling.

NPP will merely implement the appropriate taxation on the wealthy and hence Lankan business class will regulate their businesses to fit in with the new model. Luxury items for the multimillion and billionaire class will die a natural death when these classes are taxed appropriately.

Only time revolutions came about in history was when the rich ruling classes refused to relinquish their wealth, and hence the uprising of the Masses. But when our Lankan Masses vote NPP and wealth taxes are implemented, there won’t be any Masses to revolt against this.

“Any man can stand Adversity. If you want to test a man’s character give him Power” Abraham Lincoln. I would say the same thing. If the NPP wins and goes on a revengeful path, we as a country are doomed. Some say the best players never make the best coaches, similarly the best theories aren’t always practical.

He was kind. “You don’t have to be a good player to be a good coach!”
One of my players represented the National Team a few years down the road.

I have already indicated that of the three leading candidates,, AKD is to be preferred because he has no taint as a politician, does have a distinct program and has good persons around him. But, that said, doubts still remain.. We still do not have an idea as to his policies. He is willing to cosy upto business, court the IMF and speak little about socialism that is referred to in the JVP website. He wants foreign investment and wants an export oriented economy,, things that move him close to the existing patterns rather than system change.. Communism may be dead but China which still regards itself as a communist country, promotes a vision of governance which is different.. It argues that its authoritarian form of governance has lifted its people out of poverty. Does system change presage the adoption of such a model? We have to be puzzled by many shifts that AKD has made in the recent past. The NPP is against Free Trade Agreements but how is export to be promoted without such agreements. Unanswered questions remain. Will the comrades within the NPP agree with each other as to the pro-business shifts AKD is making?

      2. As Masses are democratically voting for the NPP, there won’t be any revolution.

Today, No other candidates other than the President have the power use violence because he has the power to use armed military. In the past we have seen the military power was used against in the name of security. We also see until the the former President could not use the military power even he was under threat for his life and position. There is a suspicion among people that The Easter Bombing was created for the benefits of a candidate. All are possibilities. Since this election is important for all three presidential candidates we cannot exclude the possibility to think about July 1983.

Vishawamitra, we don’t need revolutions with or without violence and bloodshed. Global history has shown us that revolutions of any kind have never brought the glorious change that they have promised. They have only brought misery to millions of people. What we need is sustainable, incremental change that makes a positive difference to our everyday lives. In the case of the NPP, all their promises are merely ‘tactics’ to mislead the masses and come to power – use of such ‘tactics’ are at the core of the political culture of the JVP as a party. Their true colours will show when the JVP and NPP jostle for the 25 cabinet positions. This is evident already in the lack of transparency on the team that will support AKD to govern the country.

      Hello Mani,
What about the American Revolutionary War of Independence or the East German toppling of the Wall. There have been quite a few Revolutions that have brought better conditions, some have taken longer to have effect, but others have been pretty quick. I don’t think the JVP is revolutionary, nor do I think changing the President will make much short term difference. The IMF will still be there.
      Best regards

        Hello LankaScot,
I would not consider either of these cases as revolutions. A revolution in my understanding is when an old order dominated by higher economic classese is overturned and a new order is established by lower economic classes. The American Revolution was a war of independence where power was handed over from a colonial elite/cpaitalist class to a local elite/capitalist class. With 1% of Americans holding the vast majority of the nation’s wealth today, the “American Dream’ grows distant for the majority of people there. In the case of Germany, the toppling of the wall was merely a rebellion. The reunification of Germany was a negotiated process between the then West German and USSR regimes. This resulted in an opportunity for the west Germans to invest in former east German regions, but without adeqaute distribution of benefits to East Germans. As a result, the neo-Nazi AfD party has received over 30% of the vote in former east German regions, even becoming the strongest party in one state – a far from revolutionary change.

      Paul,

If NPP loses and Ranil or Namal wins, it would have been a severely rigged election. Revolution is then imperative! If Sajith wins, then we hope he will alliance with Anura. If not, there is the next time round in 4-5 years for NPP.

If NPP wins, the only kind of mayhem that will occur will be when the Monied Elite whisk their money to offshore accounts, such that is happening even now. Terrible Torture that the dastardly UNP did to the JVP comrades happened because there was no money to gain from the JVP comrades. But with the vast amounts of money that need to be returned by the Monied Elite, diplomatic convincing and deals will have to be reached, failing of which will be imprisonment with the possibility of the death penalty will need to be implemented, as Vietnam is doing to get their money back. NPP is quite a strong party, so it will be probably alliances, rather than splintering.

It has been smooth sailing for AKD and his JVP/NPP so far.
Even upto the morning of the 22nd September when the country knows where it stands……
But the problems will surface only in the days, weeks.months and years beyond.Only natural; This is System Change. The old order is thrown out and until the new system stabilises it could be a rough ride.

    In the old days…….
A Week was a long time in politics………
In to-days world of the social media A day is a long time in politics…..
