Roman Catholic-Hindu Clashes Instigated By Roman Catholic Clergy On Hindu Holy Day

The Thiruketheeswaram is one of the five ancient, holy Eeswarams for Hindus on the west coast near Mannar. The approach road to the temple had some constructions which were being done again for Sivarathiri tomorrow. The Roman Catholics objected and brought the construction down under the supervision of three priests of who the leader was The Rev.Fr. Marcus. The Bishop of Mannar, The Rt. Rev. Fidelis Fernando, contacted by phone, excused comment saying he is an Colombo for minor surgery, and directed Colombo Telegraph to the Vicar General Victor Soosai Anthony. Fr. Anthony in turn said that the objection is to new concrete structures which are illegal. Asked what then of the concrete Buddhist structure nearby, he said that is a different matter. The Rev. Fr. Marcus who led the hooligans answered his phone after many tries and declined comment.

They dont care about you being tamils, sinhala, muslims or whatever. They the criminals want to show that lanken ethnic problems are interconnected so that the internaitonal communities cant know it just studying the issues.
Please let s wait until lot more info about the clashes will surface next days.

Another exercise in Divide, Distract and Rule. There are all sorts of external parties fishing for trouble in Mannar at this time.
Huge Ravana and Hanuman statues being built all over the northeast of Sri Lanka to promote Hinduthva “soft power” project..Indian Sculptors are working at Thiruketheshwaran.
Various external parties are again weaponizing ethnic and religious identity politics to gain ground in strategic Lanka
These are troubled and troubling times with a Cold War in the Indian Ocean, especially now that the US military base Diego Garcia is in trouble after the ICJ ruling on Chagos Islands..
Now that the external role of attacks on Muslims by BBS and CIA backed Buddhists has been exposed, the battlefront has moved to other religious communities.. to advance foreign bases in Lanka

What worries me is “that is a different matter” statement. What is the difference? Sinhala Buddhists are superior to Hindus? Or are you afraid of confronting them.
Is any one behind this episode to Divide and Rule? Create dissension between Catholics Tamils and Hindu Tamils ?
If the news is correct what was the necessity bring in hooligans?
There is more to it than what the Eye can read, it appears.

This is the MONTH March, UNHRC session is started.
      :
As President reiterated few weeks ago, Rajaapkashes and their supporters (Catholic, Buddhist, Muslim or anyone) are pursuaded to inflict any kind of clashes when nearing such sessions. Please check, that has been the culture of Rajakasehs also for 2018. They inflicted muslim riots in Kandy last year remember ? This President Sirisena louded during that 51 day FAKE govt.
I now believe, with President being caught by Rajaakshe clan these days, this partiuclar catholics may have been ordered to go for the kind of clashes and show the world, that cultural frictions within this nation would never allow any kind of reconciliation possible. Now Rajakashes and SIrisena become ziamesian twin after that 52-day CONSPIRACY, I dont think SIrisena aka SOrisena as minister of defence would ever stand on the way, blocking usual operandi of Rajapakhe rascals.
      .
Please check the phone conversation of that Sarath Wijeesarakara and his supporters to have made during the last few weeks.
And also Lanken Intelligence officers should be alert on these men and heartedly reveal also not being biased to manipulated President.
That can then save this nation, revealing the real face of incumbent president.

      Isi Perera,
Don’t try to fish out through justifying the violence. It is not a Tamil Sinhala issue. You showed your poor knowledge and uncivilised brought up.
Violence in any form should be condemned. If it is illegal it is a matter to police, not for the Religious leaders. encoraging violence and justifying violence in 1958 took this nation for unreparable damage to this country and its people. Religious fundamentalism is dangerous and this is the big cancer that destroy Asian countries for decades.

So tomorrow if a Buddhist Ayotulla came to a Temple, Mosque, and Church and place a Buddha statue this will become a legal fool?

Exactly these Ayotullahs doing same today in N-E under Bo tree thinking this is the 2nd century.

So your family burned Tamils alive since 1948 this is also legal?

SL Buddhists sell drugs in Dubai also legal?

There is no Mahavamsa Comic laws here OK?

I am happy we have a lone sane voice in this forum.
Please can we also take down all construction of religious nature including Buddhist Vihares, Hindu Temples, Christian Churches, Muslim Mosques, Bahá’í Houses of Worship, ………………………… and the loudspeakers, …

        NV

        Great point.

Just removing the loudspeakers is a good start then we work on the structures/worship places turned into homes for the poor and down trodden to be housed away from all the Landfills/Municipality waste sites where thousands of our country folks already born deformed from the toxic ambiance/water table contamination from the leachate/runoffs etc.

Then the respective believers can go and take care all these folks can get real blessings from their respective gods.

We can not even protect our fellow beings but fights for religions (pathetic beings saving the creator himself)/languages(means of communication)……no wonder we do not know how to communicate simple facts from fictions anymore.????????? hence we even stopped counting the dead…….we are not evolving but infect going the opposite way???

You come to my village Karainagar I go an extra mile I protect the god from the untouchables too.

Could not this energy put to good use such as making a documentary using the Tamil Nadu Bollywood industry on land and sea pollution?

The Hindus have been in Lanka for 2,000 years before the Para-Portuguese introduced Para-Roman Catholism yo the Tamils of Mannar, If the Para- Portuguese never arrived, there would have been no problem.

Pity that clergy was involved. It seems an isolated incident. As a Hindu, I would think that it is best ignored. It would have been good for the Bishop to have responded by condemning such acts of his isolated flock of sheep. One hopes that the situation is contained and no reprisals occur. We have had enough of such strife. Remember the days of Catholic Action when the Catholics bore the brunt of the animosity.

Cannot believe Tamil speaking Catholics have gone beyond tolerance limits and engaging in violence.

It is important the government appoints judicial commission to study and deal with the ever progressing religious hatred that is impacting on socio-economic progress of the country.

      Hi Sinhala Man,
this is their same modus operandi. Last year this time it was on Muslim Srilankens in Kandy (UNHRC session is just started- they need to show the world series of their tale).

This time it has turned out to be on Hindus by Catholics.

Now with SIirsena and Rajaakshes being like same coin, that has become their common act , most probably by the same masterhead Sarath Weerasekara, an another born rasicst who inflicted last year’s riots on Muslims in Kandy. Sirisena would not see it different today, since his intoxication to achieve his extension by hook or crook has made him an utter fool today. This is premediated. As you may know Cardinal Malcom is also in their boat. Birds of a feather flock together. None of these men are genuine but they have much in common – whichi is westernphobia.
Me being in the west, I know it very well, many would not even know the location of SRILANKA. .. paranoic theories of lanken stupid leaders ruin our nation further.

    Dear Amara.

You and SJ do not have anything but to pick up on religions. Your anti-wahabi, unti-religious thinking has gone far, Nothing wrong with religion, it is people and their mind set, Like philosophical people some are good and some are bad, so, do not you blame all Buddhists because of a few monks? or a few fanatics? that is wrong

    • 5
      0

      Critical thinking,

Just imagine, there was no religion, then they would have used reason.

There would be no “ few” monks, Priests, Ulama, Mullah, and fanatics following these religions.

Imagine the land like no other, FREE of Para-Sinhala Para “Buddhism”, Para-Tamil Para- “Hinduism”, Para-“Muslims” etc following, no religion, and there would have been No need for separation of State and Religion.

A world free of Popes, Ulama, Wahhabi-Salafies, Al Queda, ISIS, Tsliban, Boko
      Haram etc.

    • 4

      Dear Critical Thinking,

Amarasiri is anti-Wahhabi-Salafi, cause the Wahhabis try to convert normal Muslims, who would have ended up in heaven per belief and ideology following God, into Wahhab-Salafies and clones such as IDIS, who follow Satan, and get then to Hell Fire, per Authrntic Hadith of Najd.

Do you think what the Wahhabi-Salafies and their clones who follow Satan is fair and ethical? Satan does not think so per Islamic Theology . Many Wahhabis from Saudi Arabia joined the ISIS, and they want an “Islamic” state, a code name for the Satanic State.

Satan is described 11 times in the Holy Quran, whereas Mohamed is described 4 times, and Ahmed once.

The catholic Church was bitterly divided over the national question, with a significant part of the Tamil section rather pro-LTTE and a significant part of the the Sinhalese section pro-government. That divide has yet to heal.
This is a new development and needs to be seen in the context of the surge in various forms of religious fundamentalism.

      Dear Critical Thinking,

      Who made Religions? Man.

      Who invented God? Man.

How did Man came about? By evolution, with 46 chromosomes.

How did Primates, the cousin of Man, came about? By evolution with 48 chromosomes.

So, Amarasiri is critisising, Man and his inventions, Religions, for not using common sense and reason, which they inherited by evolution.

The Tamil Catholics of Mannar is just one, yes one, example.

In view of Maha Sivarathiri festival at Thirukketheesvaram temple today, Hindus were renovating the arch that already existed there, on the road close to the temple. They had permission from the relevant department. Hooligans alleged that there is a legal action in Courts relating to the road where the arch built, but it was a blatant lie. Temple authorities sought help from local catholic MPs Selvam Adaikalanathan and Charles Nirmalanathan, but both failed to turn up to prevent the hooligans damaging the structure, fearing they will loose Catholics’ votes. No other MPs from TNA, including Hindus, has come to the rescue or raised their voice to condemn this barbaric act, except Minister Mano Ganesan from Colombo.

On this Maha Sivarathiri night, Hindus hope and pray that these fanatics would not disrupt their religious observances at Thiruketheesvaram temple. I am sure thousands of fair minded citizens in Srilanka will join together and condemn this atrocious behaviour.

One of the reasons this country never progresses, is because there is constant bickering between religious and ethnic groups. Why the hell cannot we get on in this small country? We have no other place to go, we are all Sri Lankans, and belong here.
Try to live in harmony. Look at other nations with multi religious populations, and learn how to co-exist. There are outside forces that take advantage of these conflicts trying to set one against the other, and we must resist these efforts. The last ethnic conflict cost us dearly economically, and we lost a lost of lives, so surely we should have learnt a bitter lesson, and aim to avoid any conflict? These petty differences should be worked out amicably.

      That is why Sirisena/Sorisena,
made it very clear, in this country cultural+religious forces are greater than any other forces.
Whatever you do, you cant forget them ? Some abusive politicians of Rajaakshes nature, keeps visiting temples,, sometimes more than he goes to his bathroom, is the very reason .
You are dead right, so long these men would no take actions to keep silence the aforementioned forces, nothing will work for the progress.
You may add few physical structures as development projects, but so long human development would not work well, nothing will move forward palapably.

The Catholic Church is following what the Portuguese did to places of worship in Sri Lanka (Ceylon ) and in many other countries. They have no respect for other beliefs. It is in the DNA of the Christian faith as they are taught that their way is the only way to salvations
Thiruketeeswarm and Hinduism has faced many demons over the years and survived. It will be there for many thousand of years to come. Truth always prevails

  • 8

Seems the Catholic church is learning from BBS.

I would expect any law abiding citizen, & in this case, the Catholic church too, opposed to the construction of any structure, a complaint should be made to the local authority who should have taken the decision to grant (or not) prior planing permission, depending on the stipulated building regulations. If planing permission was not obtained, the structure is illegal, then it is up to the local authority to enforce the law. Isn’t that common knowledge or am I wrong in my assumption?

A bunch of misguided vigilantes taking the law to their hands, although a common occurrence now, is unacceptable but members of the church among the thugs is reprehensible. Looks like religious hatred & bigotry initiated by extremist Buddhist monks is now spreading to other religions too. Now that the civil war has ended, are we heading for a religious war now?

Dragging the Buddhist structure there to the issue between Hindus and Catholics is pure racial.
    Tamils are born violent.
It doesn’t make any difference whether they are Hindus or Catholics.
Last month, Governor Raghavan sent 200 Tamil ruffians to Naaya’ru Gurukanda Buddhist Temple. Governor’s ruffians threatened the lone Buddhist Chief Priest and tried to construct a kovil in the temple premises by force. 200 hooligans against one Buddhist priest! Not a single Hindu or Catholic in the country condemned the act. Even Sinhalese leaders were silent. Finally the Police took both parties to the Courts and the Archaeology Chief confirmed the ancient history of the temple. The verdict is yet to deliver.
Many Buddhist temples were under threat in North and East for decades. Buddhist priests who tried to protect Sinhalese Buddhist Heritage in North and East were taken to courts for no reason.

True, I can see that in their descendants of Sinhala/Buddhist converts multiplied by many times. What is new?

You know those thousands of Tamil mercenaries (Vellaikkara padei) who came to help the Sinhalese kings fight among themselves, and slong with Pandyas and Cholas, have no records of going back to Tamil Nadu. .

Is this an act set up by Mahinda Rajapakse through the Cardinal who takes “santhosams” from Mahinda? Is this a political game to topple Tamil votes going to UNP? Cardinal Ranjith, similar to the Mahanayakes does not have any control over his own flock. Who the hell are the priests of Sri Lanka to maintain law and order? Even if they are to maintain law and order first of all the Buddhist and Catholic leaders should find the rapists and sexual abusers in their flock before trying to maintain law and order of the public.

All churches in Mannar are illegal, built destroying all Hindu temples. Madhu temple is a typical example of such where a very famous Pathini/Amman temple was totally destroyed to construct a church.

Please resolve this confrontation peacefully without any short term or long term hatred against either of the religions. I call upon the senior religious leaders of both faiths to meet and foster harmony. Catholics must respect Hindus and Hinduism and likewise, Hindus must respect Catholic religion and Catholics. All religions are for peace and harmony. Otherwise 1.5 Billion of Hindus from India starting from Delhi will have to intervene as this is a very holy day for Hindus in India. We Delhihites are with you Hindus in Sri Lanka on this holy day.

Meanwhile, the PM has made his fourth visit to a Hindu temple in India.

    http://www.island.lk/index.php?page_cat=article-details&page=article-details&code_title=200392#

Top Buddhists seek salvation in Hinduism, rather than Buddhism.
They appear to know the truth.

what happened was one idiot priest got into an argument with a Hindu worshipper. the media should stop stirring up trouble and pretend that there is some religious riot about to explode. two idiots argues and that’s that. no major religious war. just because two people from separate religion have an arguments doesn’t mean there is a religious war about to break out.

James Speethy, watch the video taken at the time of this incident, available in today’s Tamil websites, you will see not two people argueing but a well built cap wearing Marcus in the midst of his gang of furious young men and women who are pulling down the arch iron rods and defiling Hindu flags by stepping on it. Young women’s active participation in the destruction gave me a shock. Hope their children don’t follow their mothers’ footsteps.

The incident disrupting the Maha Sivarathiri preparations at Thirukeswaran by the Catholics was an utter disgrace to the entire Tamil community and brought a question mark to the unity of the Tamils at this crucial hour. The Sinhalese also have much faith in this temple which I have seen a Sinhalese soldier worshipping and gave me Prasadam to be given to his family in Colombo. It is regretted that these Catholic fathers failed to preach that this type of disruptions can be only performed by brutes.who failed to realize that the idea of religion is to raise a brute into a man and man unto God. It is time that these Catholics should realize that they came with nothing and with nobody and they have to leave the world with nothing and without anyone. Even his soul belongs to God who will take away with him when the time comes. Therefore, it is better not only for them to live, but also allow others to live. This is the teaching of all religions.

There are Vishnu Shrines in the premises of many Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka.
These are visited by some Buddhists after they offer flowers and pray at the main Buddha Shrine. They pray to Vishnu, offer gifts including cash, and even curse their enemies – which they cannot do at the main Buddha shrine. Thus these are a good source of income for the Viharathipathis.

Some say that Vishnu is the ‘protector’ of Buddhism.
Hindus believe that the Buddha was an incarnation of God Vishnu.
With such correlation between both faiths, there should be no animosity between followers of both – unfortunately, there is, like in this instance. This may be termed “militant Buddhism” promoted by people like Gnanasara, some politicians and the armed forces, for their agendas.

Paramilitary culture has nurtured thuggery in the North East. In every incident police purposefully act to one sided, even if they don’t see a favored side for them between the parties disputing. Commission earning, beyond racism, has been the motive. Police using military and Aava Khuzu to deliver remaining justice has devastated the hope in the mind of the people to get justice though proper legal channels. The Head of the country is proposing Duterte’s murders and executions as the cure of Army enforced drug dealings.

All religions decorate on their days erecting arches. They may be permanent or temporary. Legal-illegal part has to be enforced by the municipalities. Private property violation has to be dealt with civil suit. These individuals have becomes Kings and Queens and serving justice no longer strange to North. There is no more learned, uneducated demarcation within that society. Everybody enforce their whimsies by earning physical victories. Then they proclaim it as their culture. Disappointing is their mentality!

I’ll not believe this nonsense until our residential scholar of religious matters in this forum steps in and expresses his wisdom of thoughts!

Obviously, this is what happens when we provide free wine and dine to religious morons and then ask them to educate our children!

Pictures tell the story, Thank you CT. As Buddhists in a Country of Buddhists, we believe every minority belonging to other religions must enjoy the freedom to observe, follow and engage in religious practices within the confines of Buddhist Nation. Hindus are not an exception and our hope is that extremists will not take the upper hand to stir troubles in our peaceful communities.

Is this a challenge thrown by the Pro LTTE Catholic Clergy of the North at Hindivastha Wigneswaran and the Hindus for control over Tamils of the north?
An internal political squabble between the Catholics for and onbehalf of GTF/Emmanuel & TNA and Wiggie’s Hindus taking the form of Catholics vs Hindus??
Velupillai of the LTTE was said to be like Jesus Christ according to Catholic Church sire S.J.Emmanuel taking it up to Wigneswarans Hindu stance?
According to the TNA, LTTE were the representatives of the Tamil people supported by the Northern Catholic Clergy led by Emmanuel & Rayappu. Tamil Catholic dominance surface again.

WILL SRI LANKA BE COMPELLED TO READ OUT THE RIOT ACT following IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF AUSTRALIAN PRIME MINISTER MS. JULIA GILLARD ?
UNFORTUNATELY, SRI LANKA GOT A BONELESS PM AND A PRESIDENT.

RAK-UK….Ignorance should not be displaced. Catholic Church possessed armies and those who opposed them were brutally put down.
Ex.. History behind the tragedy at Hiedleberg castle & the Protestants, Cassocorne Castle in the Southern France, near the Pyrenees Mountains whered the brutal suppression of the “Catharis” by the Catholic Army sent by Pope Innocence III to name a few from the history.

    What apathetic state of affairs…
One Simon De Silva – is on a Rajapakshe attack hoisting 2018 Kandy riots on them which has no relevance to this Mannar issue. Rajapakshes seem to be anthema to him and as such like a Python still trying to digest.
Also, why drag the Cardinal Malcom here when he had appointed a Bishop to mannar.?
How could Sri Lanka progress with such venom in people?

I think this is the REV. made to retire KASIPPU JOSEPH’s gang. He was a South Indian born. So, they ahve South Indian Genes. (This is how Tamils say, Tamil gene, sinhala gene….)

Justification of the action, that is, put an illegal structure down seems bizarre because that is the business of the law enforcement. It is precisely this kind of action that creates communal disharmony, whether in lines of ethnicity or religion. It is out of this incident that we know that the relationship between the Catholics and Hindus in Mannar is tense.
