Ruhunu University Vice Chancellor levelled grave accusations against the Frontline Socialist Party, stating, students unions affiliated with FSP are ragging undergraduates for one year where they systematically break them into submitting into orders such as attending protests to show crowds.
VC Prof. Sujeewa Amarasena says he found rooms shut off with iron doors, in an area close to a canteen of the University where he learnt, students were subjected to grave physical and sexual assault, if any undergraduates defied the ragging or the orders of the FSP student unions.
The VC had broken down the iron doors, which for nearly 15 years had been prohibited grounds for academic and non academic staffers in the university.
“We learnt this ragging continues for a year and that this is done to coerce students into participating in protests and marches organised by the student unions and the Frontline Socialist Party…We have verifiable data to prove the student unions have exploited freshers to show crowds at their political projects… The number university freshers who check into the hostel late in the night after a protest is always significantly higher than the number of seniors who participate in the protest..,” the VC said.
He added that as per recent data, over 250 freshers had attended the recent protest in Colombo while no seniors attended the protest.
The FSP student revolutionaries have also been caught stealing coconuts from university grounds, collected to be sold to outside.
Prof. Sujeewa Amarasena told media that he found bags full of coconuts plucked from trees in University grounds, in the Student Union leader’s office.
“Initially I did not impose any restrictions because I was under the impression they collect the coconuts for their consumption. But we realized later, the coconuts were collected and sold to raise funds for their political projects…So I immediately put a stop to it,”he added.
