RW’s Oracle For Peace, Stability & Growth

By Ameer Ali

Dr. Ameer Ali

“Nothing doth more hurt in a state than cunning men pass for wise” ~ (Francis Bacon).

Before becoming President and prior to that Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe appeared as the man for the season and peacemaker in a chaotic political environment created by aragalaya youth. RW sympathized with their cause for systemic change and even appealed to the police not to invade Galle Face Green to chase out the agitators by force, but to protect them from an angry mob that was marching to attack them after listening to a provocative address by the then Prime Minister, Mahinda Rajapaksa. If not for the aragalaya, RW would not have had the opportunity to become what he is today. Having climbed to the top on the back of those protestors he is now directing his anger at them and announcing that he would not tolerate another aragalaya. He also announced that he would not call for elections until the economy is stabilized and put on a growth path as per 2013 budget, and that the Tamil national question resolved, without outside interference, before the 75th Independence Day.  In short, in the name of stability, growth and peace, but without conceding to aragalaya demand for systemic change, RW, like his predecessor, has chosen to work with the existing system with repression as a tool for success.

Why another Aragalaya?

A wolf in sheep’s clothing would be the apt idiom to characterize the post-aragalaya personality of RW. A man who showed sympathy with the agitators’ call for systemic change is now trying to create socio-economic wonders without that change. All that he has done so far and would continue to do in future is to fine tune the system in vogue and dubbing that tuning as systemic change. An old political adage, “if you cannot beat them join them”, seems to fit the survival strategy of this cunning President.

The existing system of political power sharing, public administration and economic management is so corrupt that one may justifiably call that system itself as corruption. Corruption has become part of the national culture and way of life. Even the IMF identified this evil as the number one enemy and set its eradication as one of the conditions for financial assistance, economic stability and revival. The irony is that the captains of corruption who nurtured that system and brought the economy to ruins are still calling the shots in parliament, and the President is their captive.  Even if he genuinely believes in systemic change, his hands are tied without a mandate from people.

The aragalaya, which initiated whatever political changes that happened over the last few months, represents the yet unfulfilled yearnings of a new generation of young men and women from all ethnic, religious and cultural groups, whose vision of a model Sri Lankan society, its economy and governance is shaped by a world which is vastly different from the one in which their elders were born and grew.  The youth of today are an awakened generation living in a digitalized world of information technology that feeds them with surfeit of details on developments happening outside their immediate surroundings. The gadgets they carry and play with make it possible for them to cross-check information they receive for its veracity, which make these youth less gullible than their parents to the charms of official propaganda. Disappointingly, this vital fact seems little understood by an ageing political leadership holding power. RW’s Hitlerite proposition to disallow another aragalaya, and propagating the myth that aragalaya has no public support is illustration of his refusal more than inability to grasp the dynamics of the intergenerational struggle that is universal.

An awakened youth with kingmaker ballot strength are the vanguards of an effective opposition outside the legislature. That a total of 94 academics from almost all universities in the country urging the people to rise against state repression will add sustenance to another aragalaya. The new generation may be leaderless for the time being, but that vacuum would be filled if a party like NPP fails to harness the strength of this vanguard and commit to a radical overhaul of the system in vogue. RW’s recipe for stability and growth through repression is a deceptional oracle to prolong his stay in power without a popular mandate.

Stability & Growth

If the 2013 budget is any indication, RW’s chosen road to economic stability and growth via an export oriented and technologically driven open economy is fraught with uncertainties to say the least.  His distant target of the centenary year 2048 for Sri Lanka to join the family of First World nations is tacit admission of this uncertainty.  Much has been said about the economics of the budget. That the prevailing economic situation in the country is dire and that it needs certain unpleasant measures to overcome are not in dispute. But what is in dispute is whether the measures the budget proposed would all be implemented in full and whether they alone would suffice to lead the economy to reach RW’s desired destination. Implementation is the weakest element in the budget and that weakness arises from a rotten system. That the CBSL Chief Dr. Weerasinghe, who is aware of this problem, has presented a rosy picture to inject confidence in the economy and entice foreign investors to queue up for profiting is understandable.

RW’s obsession with the glitters of an export oriented open economy has made him blind to realize the importance of a vibrant domestic counterpart to fall back if global uncertainties cripple export markets. An ongoing European war with no sign of ending soon, increasing frequency of devastating climate swings and a stubborn Covid-19 pandemic that refuses to go away can create supply rigidities, loss of markets and fall in demand to restrict exporting possibilities for small economies like SL. This is why a vibrant domestic market focused production sector is vital. By putting all eggs in the basket of an export sector with a view to accumulate foreign exchange, RW’s budget falls short of adequate incentives to resuscitate a dispirited local production sector which, if rectified, could save foreign exchange by helping to cut down imports. Such incentives in the budget are too few and far between. This is why RW’s road to growth and stability looks rockier than what it looks in print and words.

In passing, one should also not forget that the export-oriented market model was the pet baby of RW’s mentor the late JRJ. Policy instruments such as free market, privatization, foreign direct investment, export diversification and industrialization were pillars on which JRJ designed his dharmishta samaagaya, as Prof. Sarachchandra baptized that model. JRJ embraced the open economy with vengeance and with a dream to re-make Sri Lanka into another Singapore, but without Singapore’s ethnoreligious and secular foundation. It is in this context one should consider the seriousness or otherwise of RW’s proposal to resolve the so-called Tamil national question.

Peace and National Question

To begin with, it is a misnomer to call this a Tamil national question, because what the country faces is a national question about the future and status of all minorities, which include not only ethnic Tamils but also others, and more significantly, Muslims who are ethnically a mixed bunch of Tamil, Sinhalese, Malay, Arab and other blooded group. However, it is undisputable that ethnic Tamils have been the biggest losers since 1950s in the wake of a belligerent Sinhala-Buddhist ethnonationalist ideology. The physical and material losses and the mental and psychological agony that this community suffered because of that belligerency are incalculable and everlasting and they need a more statesmanlike approach at resolving the national question than a politically motivated polylogue as RW had suggested.

If the president is serious about resolving this problem and has the political courage, he should first unequivocally condemn the contention that Sinhalese are the sole owners of this island and that minorities are their long-term lease holders. This hegemonic untruth based on mytho-history dangerously discourages growth of patriotism among minorities. And that untruth was openly propagated in a public rally in 2020 by that obstreperous Buddhist monk Ven. Gnanasara, the Secretary of the supremacist Bodhu Bala Sena. No Sinhalese politician or leader since then, except the late Mangala Samaraweera, had the nerve to denounce it. Instead, that untruth is continued to be purveyed by mischievous monks and malicious parliamentarians. For example, Mahinda Rajapaksa, on more than one occasion, had said that no province in the country belongs to any particular community, referring in particular to Northern and Eastern provinces. But he never dared to say the same when referring to the country as a whole.  Unless RW vows to protect Sri Lanka’s ethno-religious and cultural plurality, denounce the hegemonic aspirations of Sinhala-Buddhist monists and rewrite the constitution accordingly, his advertised polylogue with TNA, Muslim leaders and others is not going to deliver anything meaningful to resolve the national question. Sinhala-Buddhist hegemony is the axle on which the prevailing system spins. Removing that axle will be vital for peace in the country but politically suicidal to RW.

No economy can revive and thrive without the support and energy of its people. An economy is more than the sum of its goods and services and money and materials. It is the collective synergy of the people that ultimately makes an economy robust, dynamic and victorious. A divided and discontented nation like Sri Lanka lacks unity to start with to generate that synergy. To foster that unity the national question should be resolved and that requires not power-hungry politicians but patriotic statesmen and stateswomen. The aragalaya generation is the best hope for this.

        1) As expected there is DEAFENING silence from Ameer Ali and all CT commentators on whether “there could be REAL ‘systemic change’ brought about by ‘Aragalaya’ or any other without addressing the CORROSIVE link between politicians/professionals/private sector in FACILITATING corruption and abuse of power?” Is mouthing ‘system change’ a GAME to entertain?

        2) After the well meaning ‘Aragalaya’ IMPRESSIVELY achieved ‘Gota go home’, was there a ‘system change’? Have we not by and large fallen from the ‘frying pan into the fire’? Is not the much touted absence of fuel queues by apologists for the Ranil – Rajapaksa government a superficial reading of the reality?

        3) Should not professionals such as Ameer Ali and others be SUPPORTIVE of the ‘Aragalaya’ youth and put them on the path of REALITY to achieve ‘system change’?

The whole country seems immoral and corrupted. 1) Mother of all cons MR deployed personal staff of 2578 at a cost of Rs. 650 MILLION between 2010 – 2014. 2) Pissu Sira deployed 1317 at a cost of Rs. 850 million (still couldn’t prevent Easter Mayhem) 3) total expenditure is staggering 1480 MILLION , just on personal staff. May be the Queen had more staff than these two A. Holes. 4) Ex Chairman BoC Rusiripala says ” foreign funds taken for development gone missing” 5) Environmental scientist says politicians are pocketing the compensation from X-Press Pearl wreck. (worth $6 BILLION) 6) Information obtained through RTI shows MILLIONS spent on MR and GR’s foreign jaunts. (Still trying to figure out Pissu Sira’s expenditure) 6) Decades of corruption, but no one to blow whistle ????

    1) Do you seriously BELIEVE there could be REAL ‘systemic change’ brought about by
‘Aragalaya’ or any other without addressing the CORROSIVE link between politicians/professionals/private sector in FACILITATING corruption and abuse of power?

    2) This is best exemplified by the recent statement of business chambers led by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (CCC) to “call off mass protests” planned for 2 November. Believe it or not, the spokesman was Ernst & Young ‘Senior Partner and Head of Tax’ (Duminda Hulangamuwa) who is also Vice Chairman of CCC.

    3) How can an auditor be INDEPENDENT when coalescing with business chambers? Why is this not a problem to anyone?

        Dear Amrit,
        .
Let Dr Ameer Ali respond to you as he pleases. He is consistent. About three months ago, you were saying things about the corporate sector where I came forward to wholeheartedly endorse what you were saying. You appreciated what I had said, but didn’t respond to my efforts to get in touch with you.
        .
Then I had my friend, “leelagemalli” mocking me for trying to befriend “a rich man who lives in Colombo 7”. Typically, many prefer not to talk about the area where the humble cinnamon used to be grown. LM lives far away, but is as sincere as you are. He’s coming round now! After all you write articles with your photograph displayed, just as Ameer (and even humble me) do when there is something that we can contribute. Of course you have a lot to contribute.
        .
I dare say that you don’t want to be plagued by all and sundry, but are you aware of all that is happening?

        Amrit,
        .
What I’m trying to say (and this is following immediately after), is that we must support one another at this time when so many loyalties are unknown, and too many of the most prominent people are proving untrustworthy, we should forget subtler differences and join together to chase out those who are still clinging on by trying to divide the Aragalaya.
        .
Once elections are announced I feel that we will have to do two things: 1. To put forward different viewpoints. 2. Ensure that there is no cheating, by stuffing ballot boxes and the like. I make no bones about supporting the NPP, firmly. But I will denounce them if that happens.
        .
It is after a new government is in place that your auditing will have to commence. Let us not allow those problems euphemistically called “personality clashes, to emerge.

4/21 attack on Tamil churches and tourist hotels were organized and carried out by Royal Family and that time Appe Aanduwa, i.e. Yahapalanaya. The Evil Emperor put forward an excuse that after being the PM for four years, he said he was not asked to participate in the government’s security meeting. It is clear only to God then why he didn’t resign his position in protest or let the public know about that, which was a plus point for him to destroy his enemies in elections. Irrelevant of his infantile lies, the majority has been believing in his share in 4/21 and using the paid Jihadies to stage that drama. Mangala had admitted those Jihadis were on Appe Aanduwa payroll from 2014 and the polices refused arrest those guys after many times the Muslim villagers and activists had complained the activities of that group. Yahapalanaya helped the main operator to walk freely and sweep under the carpet the case of the group killing the Tamil policemen in Tamil area and stealing guns. Yahapalanaya was hiding the case as Ex tigers did it.

  • 9
    1

Further Yahapalanaya paid a 50M ransom to a Sinhala Driver who helped to transport the woman folks of the operatives’ woman to Saithamaruthu government home and carry out a mass bombing to wipe out all witnesses. Additional sweetness of the story is Rapist Army smuggled the Tamil beauty out from the jihadi team and made her forcefully disappear. Climax is Evil Emperor attempted string operation to make FBI officer appear as bomb supplier. Main reason is not to win the election, that was only by product welcomed. The main reason was to teach a lesson to UNHRC which refused to give the resolutions signed there by Yahapalanaya, for tactical reasons of GSP+ and other financial support. They were signed by Aanduwa to keep US Secretary Kerry’s office not bothering them so they can deal with China peacefully on matters like Colombo Pong Cing, Hangbangtota sale……etc.

  • 8
    1

All rascals in Appe Aanduwa use internally and externally the local jobs for diplomatic immunity to file cases against their crimes. Now Evil Emperor has taken the EP immunity against the case filed by social activist on his Jihad role in bombing the Tamil Churches on. Another interesting feature of Langkang political murder is immediately killing the hit man to hide the original evidence of political murder. It was there in Old Rowdy’s girlfriend murder and Lasantha’s murder. Last month only the Evil Emperor used EP position to defend his part in Jihadism. Yesterday a Jihadist who was involved in 4/21 is murdered in execution. This murder case will not be prosecuted in any Lankan court. But most possible Aanduwa’s action follow in this is a coolie Rapist Police file an action against the dead Jihadi in courts for his past drug dealing and distract the media attention on the murder.

Indisputable? The author has to activate his memory a little before making sweeping statements.
The biggest losers were always the Hill Country Tamils, although their loss of citizenship was two years before the 1950s barrier.

Being known as Socialists, Weeping widow or her husband could have revered the Citizenship act which made a large group of hard working people non persons overnight, that would have been a decent thing to do. However she went on to sign agreement with Hindians and expelled tens of thousands of people.

Good article Dr Ameer Ali. However, noticed still wants to distance the island’s Muslims ( the Sri Lankan Moors ) from their actual Tamil origin and ethnicity. The Muslims ( Sri Lankan Moors) on the island may be ethnically mixed just like the Sinhalese and the Tamils, no one is pure, however, the Dravidian Tamil element in this ethnic mixture( Largely from South India ) is overwhelmingly predominant. More than 90%. All other ethnic contributions from other ethnicities ( Sinhalese and Arab) will not amount to more than 10%. Even British historians and colonial officers have noted and written that the Sri Lankan Moors are basically South Indian Tamil Muslim immigrants, half of them from the coast are recent immigrants who, still hold close marital, economic and cultural ties with their South Indian homeland and the other half largely living in the interior and the east coast had arrived a few centuries ago from South India. Only around 5% of them show any trace of Arab, other western Asian or non-Tamil ancestry and even these people are purely Tamil on their female side and have very distant male Arab or other non-Tamil male ancestors. This is the reason until the recent Arabization craze or fad took over the island’s Muslims, they spoke Tamil ( still more than 95% of them even in Sinhalese majority areas speak Tamil as their mother tongue) and followed Tamil customs, dress forms and culture.

Anyway the island’s small communities of Malays, Borah, and other Indian and Pakistani-origin Islamic immunities, correctly identify themselves separately by their ethnicity and do not lump themselves with the South Indian Tamil-origin Sri Lankan Muslims or Moors, who just have a dash of Arab or Sinhalese in them. The Sri Lankan Moors living in the NorthEast and along the once Tamil northwest Puttalam/Chilaw coast will be more or less 100% Tamil. The Eastern Muslims used to follow the eastern Tamil Hindu Mukkuva customs until a generation ago. The slight Sinhalese/Arab and other mixtures are largely found amongst the Sri Lankan Moors living in the Sinhalese areas. However, this slight mixture does not still make them Sinhalese or Arab, despite deliberately highlighting this, and their religion for political and economic reasons to create a separate identity from the rest of the Tamils. They are still Tamils. No one is racially pure, we are all a mixture of many people with one predominant element. Trying to deliberately highlight a small number of mixtures from other people and completely ignore the predominant element that makes who you are is pathetic.

I wonder why you & so many other non-Muslims insist on the South Indian make-up of the majority of this country’s Muslims.

Though a large proportion of them may be Tamil-SPEAKERS, this does not necessarily mean they are ETHNICALLY Tamils, or originally from South India. And the terms “Dravidian” & “Aryan” are linguistic ones & should not be applied to race.

I hope I am not being considered racist when I say that, as far as I recall, every SL Muslim I know is very fair, some fairer than I am, & I am half-English.

Why do some of us insist on telling them that they are not what they, perhaps, claim to be? Or keep challenging their specific identity?

The Arab element in them is far below average, with just a few hundred families with a distant male Arab/other western Asian or two ancestors. which is a genetic fact. Pure Gulf Arabs are not that fair and there is a lot of Sub-Saharan African blood mixed in them due to slavery, it is the same with North African Arabs. As you would have seen in many of these soccer players from these nations. Many of these very fair people from North Africa or not Arabs but Berbers. If the Sri Lankan Muslims are largely descended from these Gulf Arabs, these sub-Saharan African genetic traits will show in them. However, this does not show in them. They look like typical South Asians even the extremely light-skinned ones. Only a very small proportion show any western Asian features and even many Sinhalese and Sri Lankan Tamils have these features, due to Portuguese and other admixture. Even a little bit of Arab ancestry amongst them occurred primarily not here but in their original South Indian homeland. Lots of South Indian people are very fair too. Fairness can also come through selective breeding, which many rich Muslim families do, as they are not largely encumbered by caste considerations, like the Sinhalese and Tamils.

DNA analysis has proven that they are the same as the island’s Sinhalese and the Tamils, who in turn are very close to the South Indian Tamils and other South Indians, as well as to the South Indian Muslims, the native Dravidian converts to Islam and not the primarily North Indian/Afghan/Mughal/Iranian and other central Asian Dakkani Urdu speaking Muslims of South India, who arrived with the Mughal Islamic invasion and primarily reside in the two southern states of Karnataka and Telangana. Some also in Andhra and North Tamil Nadu. The most amount of Arab amongst all Indian Muslim communities, especially in South India, is found amongst the Mappila Muslims primarily native to central and North Kerala. However, even these people are primarily of Indian descent ( Dravidian and some Indo-Aryan 85% ). The Arab element in them is around 15%. Largely concentrated amongst certain subcastes amongst these Mappilas. Even these Muslims, despite their 15% genetic contribution from the Arabs, proudly identify themselves as Malayali, speak Malayalam and follow the Malayalam Muslim culture

The Arab and other western Asian and non-Tamil genetic contributions amongst the Sri Lankan Muslims. as stated before will not be more than 5% -7% the most. Yet they deliberately highlight this and completely ignore more than 95% of their Tamil heritage and origin that they have. Just because you closely move with very light-skinned Sri Lankan Muslims does not mean they are all light-skinned, more than 90% of them look no different to the island’s Sinhalese or Tamils. I closely move with Brahmin Tamils, who are largely very light-skinned, does it mean all Tamils are light-skinned? Then the Kandyan Radalas who are largely of South Indian Pandian Tamil royalty /Telugu origin Tamil Naicker heritage, are some of the fairest and lights skinned population on the island and can state the same.

Manel, the Sri Lankan Muslims are a mixture of Arab, Persian Dravidians and others but the Dravidian, in this case, Tamil, element, is the most predominant due to centuries of heavy injection of Tamil Muslim migration from South India and this is the most predominant one. A sea that basically engulfed a very small population of Arab/Tamil or in a few cases Arab/Sinhalese mixtures. Basically, the vast overwhelming majority of them are in reality are South Indian origin. Tamil Dravidian Muslims and now only a very small minority of them largely from these rich elite families, trading and political have some of this Arab, Persian and other admixture and even these people are of predominant Dravidian Tamil heritage. Just because some of them are light-skinned does not mean they are of predominant Dravidian South Indian heritage. Some of the most light-skinned Sinhalese communities, especially from the upper castes are of recent South Indian Dravidian heritage. Around 30% -40% of South India is light-skinned and other than the Arabs from Palestine, Lebanon, Syria and Iraq, who have lots crusader and other invader ancestries, you also find millions of Arabs who are dark-skinned.

The Sri Lankan Moors in general are descended from the Marikkar, Mappilas, Memons, Lebbes, Rawthers and Pathans of South India. For example, take the Christians of Sri Lanka. More than 99% of them are native Sinhalese and Tamils. However, there is a small number part European part native Burgher communities amongst them too. These people will number around 30000 the most and the rest of the 2 million Christians on the island are native. Now, do we call all the Christians on the island part European due to this microscopic number of part European Burghers amongst them? The answer is no. Then why do we do the opposite for the Sri Lankan Muslims or Moors? A small number of slightly mixed but still, more than 85% Tamil Dravidian, Muslims not even numbering around 60000, largely the elite, are trying to impose their slightly mixed identity on the rest of the 1.9 million Tamil Muslim masses and create a separate identity based on some imagined microscopic Arab origin for the entire community. This is a ploy to deliberately divide the island’s Tamils, especially in the strategic east and then use this imagined fake Arab identity, origin and the Islamic religion and extremists, as it happened in April 2019 to destroy the island, all the Tamils and deny then justice and their just rights.

You probably don’t know that many Muslims.
Without prejudice, I must point out that Sri Lankan Muslims, like the rest of us, go from African black to almost European. I know one family that is quite Somali in appearance, complete with curly hair. The Afghans, Sindhis, Malays, etc didn’t speak Tamil . But that there is a good admixture from Kerala, Andhra, and TN is in no doubt. That is true of the rest of us too! Muslims in North Kerala are quite fair.

OC another clue to their actual origin is their language. The Thamizh spoken by these Sri Lankan Moors is a South Indian Muslim Thamizh dialect, especially the ones living in the Chingkalla areas, the ones living in the Thamizh areas speak the local Eezham Thamizh dialect. The second is the Arwi language which originated in Thamizh Nadu. This is Arabised Thamizh written in the Arabic script. Arwi or ArabuTamil (Arabic: الْأَرْوِيَّة‎ al-arwiyyah, أَرْوِي‎ arwī;[1] Tamil: அரபுத்தமிழ் arabu-tamil) is an Arabic influenced dialect of the Tamil language written with an extension of the Arabic alphabet, with extensive lexical and phonetic influences from the Arabic language. Arwi was used extensively by the Muslim minority of the Tamil Nadu state of India and Sri Lanka. This at one time was very popular with the southern Muslims but not with the Muslims living in the Thamizh North East. Proving their recent Thamizh Nadu origin. However unlike the Urdu language ( Hindustani highly Arabised/Persianised written in the Persian script) which originated during the Mughal era and was used by North Indian Muslims. Arwi never took off and died off.

These are traditional centuries-old, Thamizh Islamic music and songs, from the Nagoor Dharga, one of the most important Islamic centres in India. The rich Islamic Thamizh heritage is almost 1000 years old. These styles of music and songs were very common in Sri Lanka, strangely practised and sung by the southern Muslims living in the Chingkalla areas, until this recent Wahhabi Arabizaton craze took over and all this was discarded. Proving the South Indian Thamizh origin of the Sri Lankan Moors. Note the woman, washing her hands, before entering the Dhargha, wearing the white Thuppatti which draped over the body, on top of the saree but reveals the face in the first song, belongs to the Thamizh Muslim Rawther caste. This is typical of them, in contrast to the black covering and veil worn by western Asians and Urdu Muslims. They generally visit the Dargha to mark major life events like birth, death, and marriage and recite the mawlid.

Very strange you only see white and light-skinned Sri Lankan Muslims and no dark ones. What! Are you wearing tinted glasses? Just take them away and your racial bias and see how dark the vast majority of them are just like the vast majority of the Chingkallams and Thamizh. Lots of light-skinned Chingkallams and Thamizh too. We do not wear special tinted glasses, so can see the true colour and origin of the Sri Lankan Muslim. Yes, Aryan and Dravidian are linguistic ones and should not appear to races. There are many Indo-Aryans speaking Dravidian and most North Indians are Dravidian or Dravidian hybrids but still, there is a genetic difference between most Indo-Aryan and Dravidian speakers, especially in the north-west Indian states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal, Uttranchal, Kashmir and most of Pakistan.

Islam or being a Muslim is a religion and not a race or ethnicity. Other than religion there is nothing much in common between a Sri Lankan Muslim, a Punjabi Muslim, a Pashtun, Malay, or Arab. Sri Lankan Muslims are basically of Thamizh ethnicity and migrated to the island from South India a few centuries ago and this is a fact. Some do have some Arab/Persian, Afghan and other North Indian mixtures. These people are only a small minority amongst them and do not represent the larger Sri Lankan Muslim or Moor community. Most probably you are looking at this very small minority through your tinted glasses. Lots of Chingkallams and Thamizh also have some mixed heritage and you can see that in their features and skin colour. However, they do not make this an issue like the Thamizh Muslims of Sri Lanka. They can have a separate identity but it should be based on truth and facts and not on myths and fairy tales to suit various agendas.

They even used to claim DNA ‘evidence’ for all thir C&B tales.
Just one look at a typical Muslim tells us of significant non-local ethnic mix.
They are not all of predominantly Arab extraction.
But the most important thing is since early last century, they have asserted a distinct identity, and we need to respect it.
If someone rejects an identity that is a matter of personal choice.
There is no pure race here. The Muslims are as mixed as the Lankan Tamils ans Sinhalese.
Many Tamil nationalists in India reject Brahmins as non-Tamils. Where do we go from that kind of nonsense?

The Aragalaya was started by middle class people in the suburbs of Colombo. These people and the organizations that they formed are peaceful. They are being consulted and what can be done is been done to address their issues. This peaceful aragalaya was hijacked by the JVP affiliated IUSF and the FSP. The IUSF is not a democratic organization. Populated by loosers and hangers on in the University system who do not graduate they have always used this platform to stir up trouble. A large contingent of monks who wear the robe to get university admission are among these agitators. This has been going on for decades. You are either too stupid to see the difference or are deliberately refusing to accept this difference mainly to bash the man trying to bring order to the country. The FSP is headed by a person living in Australia with a doggy past. Are these your champions?

NGOs and certain vested interests hijacked the Aragalaya at the outset and depoliticized it to make it a single issue (GGH) process.
It is their political bankruptcy that imagined the revolution as a grand banquet.
That led to questions even within the middle classes and enabled the entry of other forces including trade unions.

Lets get to economics. Every single country that went bankrupt had to go to the IMF for a bailout. That is fact. There is no alternative to an IMF bailout unless you want to get about in a bullock cart or tie a donkey to your car and live under candle light and starve. Ditto to an export driven economy. What kind of idiot are you to suggest that there is an alternative? Do we go back to Sirima’s era? She is one of the chief architects for creating in the mindset of the Sinhalese that the government has to give them all they need for free or that every SOE is a national asset even when they cannot possibly run at a profit riddled with corruption and populated by politically appointed imbeciles. As for MR and his bulls–t there are still fools who will believe him some out of spite towards the most educated, well read head of state we have ever had. Dear sir, can you do your preaching to the Evil Emperor? Can you ask, as the first economic recovery action, bring back all Old Rowdy’s foreign bank deposits, instead additionally borrowing and spending to Army and create a new massive Naval force. UNHRC has asked the Langkang government to prosecute the Economic criminals. Can the Evil do that instead of beating up or arresting the women folk protesting on the streets. What do the Protestors ask for? Can you explain it to us clearly? Did they ask Hitler King to appoint the Evil as the EP. Can you explain to me what provision could be used to justify an outed EP appointing from a foreign land, another person who was 100% rejected by people as the new EP. Is that what the protesters asked, and the Evil Emperor has fulfilled it? Pls don’t parrot here Batalanda fame, Central bank robbery fame, 4/21 jihad fame Evil’s defaming propaganda of protesters in parliament.

Instead of passing a law to dismiss Wasantha from University, can you ask Evil to bring a law that anybody who lost the contest for a position two times can no longer accept that position by tricky, cunning works? Because Gunaratnam is Tamil he was white vanned when he came from Australia. Australia for his Sinhala wife’s request had made Appe Aanduwa to release him. Where were you to talk about this at that time? You are such an idiot to label that Old Rowdy’s Viyathmahas are good enough to wash the back of Evil. It is they who got the votes from people and appointed Evil as the EP, while Evil never won any election. It is Evil who has to wash the Slap Party Viyathmaha’s back for their service. It is you who shamelessly wash Evils’ back in front of all readers. Are you related to Jeevan Thiha, who washes every Sinhala Buddhist’s back for his daily meals.

Thiha, the anonynous, I’m typing this in, and then I’m going to give this comment of yours a red DISLIKE thumbs down.
      .
Not because any of the things that you say are wrong, but because of other things that you say.
      .
The one solution now available to us is to protest as loud as we can – so as to get rid of the current dictator, Ranil. In other comments you undermine all such efforts.
      .
Of course we need all possible help. We are desperate. We, the people, need all the help that the World may give us, but let this government not be helped.
      .
You confuse all by making vulgar references. None of us ever supported Mahinda Rajapaksa. He was duly elected by many people who voted foolishly. They don’t support him any more.
      .
Therefore, you want unelected Ranil to continue do you? Why not try to find inconsistencies in what I say? Dr Ameer Ali understands better than me the complexity of the problem, but he never contradicts himself, and never uses disgusting language.

hanchopanch: I quoted the statement as reported in a “National” Print Media. That statement was reportedly made at a meeting with the Minister in charge of the Police. So far I haven’t seen any denial by the UN Rep or the Police Minister.

Do you remember we had a Minister in charge of National Security in the 1980s by the name of Ranjan Wijeratne? This present Minister Thiran Alles has all the resemblance to that of Minister Ranjan Wijeratne. Do you also know what happened to him at Havelock Town just near the Thummulla junction? We are still unable to collect his “Body Parts”. In Buddha’s Teachings, it is called “Ditta Dhamma Vedaneeya Karma” i.e. “Action that brings Reactions within this Life”.

I was reminded of Buddha’s Teachings because these days every “Dick Tom & Harry” including the President gives a “Sermon” and engages in debate on those Teachings except the Budget proposals. At the moment we have all the “FUN” perhaps until the water boils in the pot.
