Saffron-Robed Enforcers And Premier Stakes

By Tisaranee Gunasekara

“While the piety of presidents and monarchs remains their own business, it is clear that any religiosity they express or resources they spend on religious projects are above all strategies to achieve political ends…” – Madawi Al-Rasheed (Al Monitor – 17.12.201)[i]

The Geneva Season has become an annual event in the Lankan political calendar. .Every March/April a new resolution on Sri Lanka is presented at the UNHRC session. Tensions rise, tempers fray, promises and threats are made, and then it is all over. The resolution is voted on, and Lankan political-life returns to its violent, arbitrary and abusive grooves. For the next several months, the Rajapaksas rule, more or less as they like it, until it is Geneva Season again.

buddhist_monks_protestEvery Geneva Season, the Rajapaksas become unusually sensitive about the sensibilities of the handful of dependable allies they have in the UNHRC. Since quite a few of these allies are Islamic-majority countries, orchestrating/permitting anti-Muslim violence during the Geneva Season can boomerang on the Rajapaksas. Plus anti-minority violence will weaken the Rajapaksa case in Geneva and give an added fillip to the voices demanding that international community move beyond verbal condemnations into deeds.

For all their bravado, the Rajapaksas would not want the West to really act against them. Forget The Hague; their real concern would be the imposition of a version of the Magnitsky Act against them. A travel-cum-asset ban will really hurt the Rajapaksas. The Siblings’ anti-imperialism will not move beyond Sinhala-sloganeering. How can it, when two are reportedly American/Lankan dual-citizens?

Consequently it makes political and personal sense for the Rajapaksa to rein-in their saffron pawns when Geneva looms. And that is what the President seemed to have done before he left on his Palestine-Jordan-Israel jaunt: “At the rescheduled weekly ministerial meeting on Friday he warned the ministers to be extremely cautious over attempts to rouse ethnic tensions. Whichever community was responsible for such actions, he said, the ministers must respond cautiously bearing in mind the religious sensitivities involved. They could be reported as attacks on churches, mosques, temples or other places of worship. The incidents were being blown out of proportion by interested parties to embarrass the Government, he warned.”[ii]

In other words, hands-off Tamils/Muslims/Christians – until Geneva is done.

In his infamous interview with Al Jazeera, President Rajapaksa, instead of condemning anti-minority violence, sought to justify it by labelling it, mendaciously, as just retribution for heinous crimes, especially child rape: “There were attacks; some incidents. What was in the background? Why were they attacked? Now see a girl was raped. Seven years old girl was raped. Then naturally they will go and attack them whether they belong to any community or any religion. The people when they heard about it they were so upset, relations everybody. There were incidents like that. All incidents have some background to that[iii].

Juxtapose this implicit justification of anti-minority/anti-Muslim violence with the recent Presidential warning against targeting minorities during the Geneva Season – the inescapable conclusion is that the Saffron-mob onslaughts against minorities are orchestrated events and the Ruling Siblings can contain them, whenever the need arises.

So until Geneva is over, the minorities can probably feel safe.

And the Rajapaksas have bigger fish to fry.

The PM, the Drug-Smuggler and the Sinhala Ravaya

Under the 1978 Constitution the Prime Minister, generally an impotent figure, becomes all important if the Presidency falls vacant through death/incapacity/removal. When the President departs, it is the prime minister who takes over, for a month. Death is the great unknown and if the grim-reaper visits President Rajapaksa before the premiership is secured, that one month will suffice for the SLFP old-guard to disempower the Ruling Family and re-take the government.

To secure familial rule and dynastic succession, the Rajapaksas need to make one of their own the prime minister.

The SLFP is not yet a fully Rajapasaised party, and that lacuna is a critical weakness in the Rajapaksa project. If the party seniors are bypassed and the much junior Basil Rajapaksa (or the total outsider Gotabhaya Rajapaksa) is appointed as the PM, it might ignite the anti-Rajapaksa sentiments dormant in the party. After all, such a blatantly unjust appointment will signify the end of hope for many SLFP seniors, pushing them into an inner-party rebellion. Desperate people sometimes do the right thing, even for wrong reasons.

Then came the drug-scandal involving Prime Minister DM Jayaratne; and the Rajapaksas found themselves with a way to square that all important circle.

Going by media reports, the PM – and his son – is indubitably guilty, either of criminal complicity or criminal irresponsibility[iv]. Knowingly or unknowingly, Mr. Jayaratne got involved in a heinous crime and he does not deserve to remain as the PM.

Had he done the honourable thing and resigned immediately from the premiership, the scandal would have died down and the Rajapaksas would not have been able to manipulate it to their advantage. Such a decent response would have drawn a clear line of demarcation between the old SLFP and the new – Rajapaksa – SLFP, to the former’s advantage. But the PM continues to cling-on, looking more ludicrous and blameworthy with each passing day. His egregious conduct demonstrates that the difference between the Rajapaksas and the old SLFP is mostly one of degrees. For instance, dynastic-politics is a SLFP disease; most SLFPers would agree that power/political status should pass from parent to offspring or sibling to sibling[v].

The PM is a member of the SLFP old-guard, identified with the non/anti-Rajapaksa wing of the SLFP. His differences (not policy but personal-political) with the Rajapaksas surfaced last year, when the President, violating a previous undertaking, refused to make the highest preference vote-getter (the PM’s son) the CM of the Central Province. The President justified this departure by saying that sons of cabinet ministers cannot be chief ministers. The PM reportedly retorted that Chamal Rajapaksa’s son became the CM when his father was a cabinet minister[vi]. And when the former CM of the Central Province was reappointed to the post, there was a demonstration by Jayaratne-supporters against it, in Kandy[vii].

The drug-scandal and Mr. Jayaratne’s odious conduct might enable the Rajapaksas to discard an unreliable PM, haemorrhage and diminish the non-Rajapaksa wing of the SLFP and appoint one of their own as premier without making too many adverse-waves.

So the issue is allowed to drag on and simmer. The latest episode in this soap-opera was Sinhala Ravaya’s siege of the PM’s office. An unruly demonstration blocking a major road in a high-security-zone cannot happen with impunity without Rajapaksa blessing. Plus the Sinhala Ravaya is an active player in the Rajapaksa demographic-engineering project in the North. The organisation has reportedly ‘resettled’ several Sinhala-Buddhist families in Navakkuli, Jaffna[viii] and got the army to build a temple, appropriately named Sihalaramaya, for these settlers[ix]. Such deeds need Rajapaksa-patronage.

When the UNP formed the Leadership Council, the Rajapaksas used the BBS to mount an invasion of Sirikotha. Now the Sinhala Ravaya is being used to besiege the old SLFP. Saffron-mobs are an important weapon in the Rajapaksa arsenal; and the Siblings will unleash them not only against minorities and the Opposition but also against fellow SLFPers.

[ii] The Sunday Times – 5.1.2014

[v] JR Jayewardene and Ranasinghe Premadasa cured the UNP of the archaic disease of familial politics. So when Sajith Premadasa says ‘I was born prepared to take over the responsibility of the United National Party’ (http://newsfirst.lk/english/2013/12/born-take-responsibility-unp-sajith-premadasa/8277) he places himself against the modernist, anti-feudal variety of politics championed by his father and in liege with the Rajapaksas and other believers of ‘inherited-leadership’

[viii] ‘Inane Piety which Creates Religious Wars – Dinasena Rathugamage – Irida Divaina – 18.8.2013

[ix] Sihalaramaya is said to be a brainchild of Rev. Magalkande Sudantha Thero, the Convenor of the Sinhala Ravaya.

So the SL government is learning from the US NGO trick?

It is a bit like the US expecting us to believe that Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu is a humanrights campaigner, isn’t it?

The man is close to explode with all the wine and fried food he has been treated to.

And now we wear yellow robes to do the opposite. GREAT.

These thugs have actively seeking to build a theocracy void of rational morality for many years now.

Watch out, these “religious police” might one day knock on your bedroom door to check whether you are conducting your most personal sexual relation with your partner according to their prescribed form.

They might also demand and exercise “their” authority to perform Virginity test on all unmarried women including under aged girls and burqa wearing women.

As regard to burqa wearing women the religious police might want to ensure that they are not a threat to national security, concealing bombs under their garments.

      There are immense possibilities.

Excellent analysis by Tisnaranee. Hope the idiotic electorate in Sri Lanka who vote for these SLFP clowns will read a translation in Sinhalese or Tamil.

I am appalled not only by Rajapassa dynasty project. But, also by utterly greedy SLFP old guard. Who would only rise up when their prospects are threatened. So much for their hollow “patriotism”?

Sri Lanka is ruled by outright theives, criminals and barbarians.

      Cheers!

PS: Expect an unceremonious unleashing of Ravana Balaya or BBS Gnassara on Tisaranee’s door. Coming to a theater near you very soon.

These shouting monks in the picture are a GREAT threat to entire humanity.
They should be derobed by force and brought before the courts going through the hard laws that I think is timeworthy to impose right at this critical juncture of the country. They have lot to do with skin heads in Europe or anywhere that go against other folks rather than saving the nation regardless of the religion, race or the like.

Amendments that could work equally to all that damage to own folks by vaious means should be introduced to lanken law and order system wihtout further delay will save the nation accordingly. Lawyers collective and highly educated masses should protest showing the rulers – that this is imperative if we live peace and harmony in this country.

Come-on Native Vedda, if they are not Buddhist clergy the rest of the monks and the devotees would have disrobed them a long time ago. Stop the denial and accept that they ARE part of the same bunch. They are the real thing!!!

Religious people always use duplicity; which to my knowledge is not advices by any of the religious teachers. If a robed-man does something not so honorable, he is immediately refereed to as a “cheevaradhariya”, insinuating that he is not a real Buddhist monk, but just some guy wearing a robe.

May be some people get fooled by this kind of word play but not everyone.

Besides, haven’t you people evolved enough to let go of this primitive nonsense and get with the times yet?

      Sunith,
What you say is so obvious… but why huge percentage of SL people, especially Sinhalese people can’t see the obvious… Why most of these Sinhalese people believe every nonsense their leaders say..
*) Top leadership says IMF is bad? Because they are asking questions on how the first potion of the loan spent before releasing the second part. This annoys politician in power.. They say IMF is bad then whole country says IMF bad \b>..
*) Top politician says NGO is bad, because these foreign money is not going through politicians. Politicians are angry because some others are stealing NGO money, not them, they want NGO money to go through gov so they can steal it too…. Now politicians say NGO is bad… Then whole country says NGO bad.. \b>
*) SL top politician says LTTE is worst terrorists in the world.. Whole Sinhalese just repeat it as Mantram.. Aren’t those worst LTTE terrorist are our Sri Lankan terrorist (worst or bad)? Shouldn’t we say Sri Lankan \b> LTTE Terrorist are the worst in the world. No, LTTE is not us Sri Lankan says Sinhalese politicians, the fellow Sinhalese ‘Guippies’\b> just follow the leaders..

Whilst Ms T is baying for old Jayaratna’s blood, guess who is backing him to the hilt?…

It is none other than the star of Ms T.s anti Srilankan camp , the UNP Media guru and MP for Matara Mr Samaraweera?

Has the UNP become to guardians of Drug Moguls?.

Isn’t defending an associate of an Internatinoal Drug Cartel as bad as issuing official Got letters to influence the Customs Officers and rort the Customs and Tax regulations?.

The Opposition in any other part of the World would have torn the PM apart if is or she was even slightly connected with Heroin smugglers even the small one.

What has Ms T ‘and the Elite Intelligentsia’s opposition done after giving a good character certificate to the PM ?.

    Gone into hiding perhaps..

Thanks to the Sinhala Balaya and the JHU , the Drug Barons and their Brekkie buddies are on the mat.

And the same coalition is now seem on a mission to flush out the rest of the drug dealers and corrupt Pollies.

Ms T has been rubbihsing these Monks for a long time now to help the Opposition.

I wonder what the salaried sleuths of the Southern Sri Lanka have been doing about this lucrative immoral trade? Gota is supposed to keep an eye on the goings on in this island. Now its seem he is caught napping while on guard duty.

Where is the Police Narcotic Bureau?
Where is the State Intelligence Service?
Where is the Criminal Investigation Department?
Where is the Sri Lanka Customs?
Where is the Commission to Investigate Allegation of Bribery or Corruption?
Where is the Directorate of Military Intelligence (DMI)?

Are the members of these elite organisations sleeping with the enemy or sharing bed with the drug barons?

These are some of the questions being continuously raised by the poor inhabitant of this island.

While we are on the subject of poor inhabitants, you will do note what Minister Amunugama said about their middle income country:

Low income earners in SL living on one and a half dollars a day
      * Senior Minister Amunugama tells SAARC PCSCs

Most low income groups in Sri Lanka are eking out an existence on just one and a half dollars a day and poverty is common among some local social segments, Senior Minister for International Monetary Cooperation and Deputy Finance Minister Sarath Aminugama said.

        Dear Native,

23 % of our inhabitants were below the PL in 2008, when the LTTE Leader was in charge of 16,000 Sq Kilometres of our land and the current TNA Leadership was representing the LTTE as its Political Front.

        PL dropped to 8.3 % in 2010,

That is two thirds , nearly two Million people jumped above the PL in less than two years.

With the Per Capita now well over USD 3000. our inhabitants under the PL must be very very small as our Colombo Elite Households even have to pay their Domestics around LKR 9000 a month.

That is if they are not into child labour..

    T.G.

    1. You say “Rajapaksa demographic-engineering project has reportedly ‘resettled’ several Sinhala-Buddhist families in Navakkuli, Jaffna.” Can you reveal exactly how many families were settled. Because you make it sound like a huge project designed to change the demography of the area.

    2. When you say “Sinhala-Buddhist families,” are you implying non-Buddhist Sinhalese are not selected for settlement as the official government policy?

    3. If you call this a “demographic-engineering project,” how would you describe the settlement of hundreds of thousands of Indian Tamils by the colonial government in the hill country over a period of 120 years, displacing the hundreds of thousands of Sinhalese who had lived in the area for centuries and turning them into poverty-stricken landless peasants?

    4. Do you believe the north should be an exclusively Tamil “homeland,” and Sinhalese should be barred from going there?

    • 1
      2

      Point Man

“Can you reveal exactly how many families were settled.”

Do you want to settle more if the number of families being settled there is inadequate for your long term project, Assimilation Sri Lankan style?

Demographic changes bear fruits only after long period of gestation.

Note genocide of my people has been taking place over 2500 years.

” Do you believe the north should be an exclusively Tamil “homeland,” and Sinhalese should be barred from going there?”

      No, that would be unreasonable.

I believe the entire island should exclusively Veddah homeland and Sinhalese and Tamils should be completely barred from living in my homeland. Basically I want to ethnically cleanse this island of Tamils and Sinhalese, both have their ancestral homeland in India.

Being someone well-versed in Public Administration(and one-time Ministry Secretary, too)I fail to see how a letter from a Ministerial Coordinating Secretary should be an accepted norm for Customs to clear the offending container at discount. Coordinating Secretaries have no legal authority to issue letters in the way the PM’s Coordinating Secretary did. A Coordinating Secretary is a member of the PM’s private staff. Only the Ministry Secretary can convey official orders to other official bodies. The PM’s Coordinating Secretary should be arrested instead of being permitted to resign. This whole incident smells. The President should have initiated an investigation immediately as this is a serious matter.

“A travel-cum-asset ban will really hurt the Rajapaksas” Not merely hurt but will bring the fear of Moses into the venal lot. Diaspora sources are aware much precious money has been spent consulting QCs in London if this aspect of international law can be unleashed against the Rajapakses. The Burmese junta folded up on this and were forced to allow freedom to their captive nation. The Rajapakses will instantly agree to most conditions they adamantly refused so far – even risking the wrath of the Sinhala supremacist cabal – if this threat is made to them in clear terms, even privately.

President Obama called the Libya military action a model of global cooperation tonight, one in which the U.S. is handing over the lead role to allies who are helping Libyan rebels counter-attack the forces of Mommar Gadhafi when the war on Libya started in March 2011.

What has happened to date. While a “pro-democracy” rebel government has been instated, the country has been destroyed. Libya’s economic and social achievements over the last thirty years, have been brutally reversed: The Libyan Arab Jamahiriya has had a high standard of living and a robust per capita daily caloric intake of 3144. The country has made strides in public health and, since 1980, child mortality rates have dropped from 70 per thousand live births to 19 in 2009. Life expectancy has risen from 61 to 74 years of age during the same span of years. (FAO, Rome, Libya, Country Profile,)

Today, a historical reversal in the country’s economic and social development has occurred. The achievements have been erased. Fear and Social Despair, Countless Deaths and Atrocities are amply documented by the independent media. The NATO invasion and occupation marks the ruinous “rebirth” of Libya’s standard of living. That is the forbidden and unspoken truth: an entire nation has been destabilized and destroyed, its people driven into abysmal poverty.

Make no mistake; that is exactly what the US is trying initiate at Geneva Season of UNHRC and eventually hope to do Sri Lanka. These monks are opposing nothing but that dastardly action by that hypercritic country and their supporters. This woman writer who envisioned Velu would fight a guerrilla war from from Mulathivu jungles against Sri Lanka for at least ten years [see Trancurrents in March/April 2009] would welcome it.

Gadhaffi and his relatives had huge ban deposited in WEstern banks. Some accounts are several billion dollars worth.

Western govts robbed all those including the properties they had bought in the west.

@Jimsofty, Gadhafi stole it from his people and the west stole it from him. What is the difference?

How nice if all Buddhists in Sri Lanka take Nava Guna Val and meditate and meditate so that non-Buddhists can have a big party with Rapp and Navin Pillai.

      Wijeyawickrama,

In addition to all of the above you can also have the pleasure of giving you sister and you mother a naked bath as tradition demands.

Your greatness is measured by your kindness; your education and intellect by your modesty; your ignorance is betrayed by your suspicions and prejudices, and your real caliber is measured by the consideration and tolerance you have for others.

Ela Kolla and Maveeran and people like that just calm down okay. Though you guys think you are in opposite camps, actually you guys have much in common: easliy excitable and gullible. Don’t you guys realise Tisaranee’s only fun in life is arousing immature men like you regularly by her never-ending flow of monothemism. There are some others who get voyeuristic pleasure by watching you guys get off while providing musical accompaniment from the sidelines. Don’t let these cretins take you guys for a ride and cause constant stress. Learn to relax and enjoy life. Sri Lanka is just a dot in the scheme of things, and it may very well get completely erased in the seismic shift expected to hit the Indian Ocean anytime soon.

    Tisaranee,

I admire you for trying to make sense of the mess that is Sri Lankan politics. However all that positioning of the Rajapaksa brothers and the seemingly arbitrary actions of the PM group is just play acting only. The Rajapaksa brothers are too powerful and could crush any opposition within the party without even having to resort to white vans. The silence of the UNP provides tacit support to the ruling clan.

Secondly, speaking with my BBS hat on, I must say, the Tamils, Muslims and Christians must be thankful for Sinhalese being mainly Buddhists. Imagine how much more cruel, heartless and murderous our Sinhala race would be if not conditioned to a degree by Buddha’s message of passivity?

    PM continue to cling on..

    that is most important part.

See how former UNPers in the present govt, and how they are Stealing from the public and how they are exploiting the public.

It is like Ravi KArunayake [Edited out]

See how R PEmadasa MAssed so much wealth even though he came from a very poor background. Now, his son is waiting to make that wealth negligible with respect to what he will be making.

    that is Sri Lankan politics.

Which member in the PArliament is honest and who has lost money because they worked for the country or the people. Every one has a few houses.

they don’t care Temple, church or Mosque. they just want to make their bank accounts fatter and their families rich.

TG is talking about the right thing now.

But, TG worked for a one of the most corrupt and very murderous Presdient in Sri Lanka.

RP is accused of getting rid of his Army commander by providing information to the LTTE. RP is accused of providing weapons to LTTE against IPKF.

It is not a secret that RP massed hugh wealth by stealing from the public and he was used to bring container loads of private stuff when he came from foreign tours.

    TG worked that man.

I trust many would much like to hear from our prophetess par excellence Thisaranee Gunesekera (TG)what her views are on Jagath Asoka and Kumar David’s suggestion of Maduluwawe Sobitha’s potential to oust MR when he has the 18th amendment, Electoral Commissioner and the Chief Justice to do his bidding even without asking with a mere wink.

What are TG’s or anyone else’s’ thoughts and prophetic vision for SL getting off the downward spiral of the Super-VP legacy coming to fruition through MR & Co?

These buggers although clad in yellow robes are not Buddhists. The fact that the President himself is not a Buddhist is clear from the way he leads this country to disaster and ruin . Even his Lady Creature seems to be a God worshiping infidel. These people are the followers of the new religion – Mahinda Chintanism … which promotes Casino, Heroin and Prostitution as the only way to salvation!

Ever since we took charge of our own affairs, we appear to have brought down a stream of curses on this tropical paradise of ours. The assassination of a prime minister, language strife, ethnic strife, violent political uprisings, a long internecine ethnic war, more assassinations, a tsunami, a war victory with a sting in its tail, a proliferation of rogues and thugs in a government that has abandoned basic decencies, and now religious strife led by a plague of saffron-robed goons with the temerity to do what they like, when they like and where they like. How much can the poor ordinary citizen suffer? Foreigners come and marvel at the beauty of our land, praise the generosity and hospitality of our people, and then shake their heads in bewilderment when they read the myriad reports that emanate, fresh daily.Something is rotten in our land like no other and no one has a bloody clue as to how we can exorcise the pestilential curse that continues to hang over us. O woe is us!
