Satellite Images Uncover Lies Spewed By SL Military In Jaffna Land Grabs

Exposing blatant lies spewed to Northern civilians by the military under the blessings of the Rajapaksa-regime in order to support the rampant land grabbing racket following the end of the war, a close analysis of satellite images have disclosed that over 50% of the land acquired by the Army through such means is not being used for its stated purpose.

Land grabThe analysis that had been carried out by the Geospatial Technologies and Human Rights Project of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) upon a request made by Sri Lanka Campaign for Peace and Justice, has revealed the majority of the 25 sqkm stretch of land in the Jaffna Peninsula that is presently declared out of bounds to anyone except the Army and those they permit to enter, has not been deployed for its stated ‘public purposes’.

The land that had accommodated close to 2000 Tamil families before the conflict was abandoned during the war. However, following the end of the war, its original owners have sought legal assistance to reacquire the lands that have been encroached upon by the military, but to no avail.

The careful analysis of the satellite images have revealed that:

  • Only 7.77 sqkm of the land (amounting to only 30% of the total land strip acquired by the military) have been used for any purpose
  • Majority of the land has been used for farming, widely carried out by the military that has by way stifling local farmers
  • Although nearly 2,150 houses have been constructed in the western half of the zone they do not appear to be part of any military base
  • Emergence of commercial developments within the zone including the Thalsevana holiday resort
  • Deterioration of many of the original houses due to lack of repairs

Commenting on the facts that have been exposed, Campaign Director for the Sri Lanka Campaign for Peace and Justice, Fred Carver had stated that the satellite image analysis has revealed that the military deprived close to 2000 people of the right to their original lands to line the pockets of the Sri Lanka Army.

“More seriously it suggests that the Sri Lankan Army is still keen to ensure that it’s military are a visible and active presence within the day to day life of Sri Lanka’s northern Tamils – a form of state oppression which, combined with systemic human rights abuses, we have previously deemed an ongoing crime against humanity,” he has added.

    What will Gota do now?

Gota should acquire more land and expand around this area; his purpose the Sri Lankan Army is still keen to ensure that it’s military are a visible and active
is not a form of military aggression any more than the US military presence in the South/North Korean border and in many other places in the world.

Given the aggressive stand of Tamil Nadu Vaiko-Jayalaitha-Nedumaran types, the attacks on Sri lankans, Christian and Buddhist Pilgrims, cricketers, and even on Tamils traveling in South India, previous history of funding terrorism in North Sri Lanka, influx of Kallathonis into Sri lanka from Tamil Nadu, smuggling activities from Velvettithurei, the birthplace of the terrorist leader Prabhakaran, WE NEED A STRONGER MILITARY PRESENCE IN THE NORTH TO FEEL SAFE.

Land is acquired by the Gov. in all regions of Sri Lanka for various projects including airports, cricket grounds, security complexes, highways, housing etc. etc. This also happens in every country in the world. There is no reason why Jaffna area should be exempted.

    The article says;
“More seriously it suggests that the Sri Lankan Army is still keen to ensure that it’s military are a visible and active presence within the day to day life of Sri Lanka’s northern Tamils”

Who in their right mind will remove an Army from a region where terrorism was incubated, matured, fought and eliminated, which took 30 years? All law abiding Sri Lankans both Tamil and Sinhalese want the Army to be present in the north as long as no anti-Sri Lankan activities emanate from that region. Reading articles and reader posts of Colombo Telegraph is enough evidence to keep the Army in the North for extended periods.

These are not “acquired” lands! These are lands forcibly grabbed by the army by evicting people who had settled there for generations!

        sengo,
Only anti-Sri Lankan separatists call it a “land grab” when it happens in Jaffna. This is the very reason I need the Army in the north until all this animosity is quelled.
I guess it is OK for you to call “acquired” when it happen in the south.
You can use any term you want but the country will go forward with development and this include the north too.

MaRA clan is also kicking out traders from Pettah Slave Island etc to sell the land to foreign casino operators at a cheap price and the clan is pocketing millions of dollars in swiss banks

1.Mrs Banadaranaike started militarising the North in early 60s in anticipation of armed rebellion:

‘’Dias had a deep conviction that within the next twenty five years or so, the Tamil protest will develop into an armed rebellion and that the Government must prepare from now (i.e.1963) to meet that outcome. He said that my principal role as the GA of Jaffna, while enforcing the Sinhala Only Act, will be to help him develop counter measures for dealing with the anticipated uprising, and then proceeded to unfold to me his grand strategy for containing it.
Even as Dias was unfolding his grand strategy it struck me that he seemed to have taken a leaf from Germany’s famous Schlieffen Plan of 1905 to encircle Paris in the event of war. The centrepiece of Dias’s strategy to contain a future Tamil revolt was to be the establishment of a chain of military camps to encircle the Northern Province, all the way from Arippu, Maricchikatti, Pallai, and Thalvapadu in the Mannar District, through Pooneryn, Karainagar, Palaly, Point Pedro and Elephant Pass in the Jaffna District, and on to Mullaitivu in the Vavuniya District and Trincomalee in the East. He said that there were already two military camps of platoon strength in Pallai in Mannar and in Palaly in Jaffna and a rudimentary naval presence in Karainagar, but that he wanted to upgrade them……… The whole military operation was therefore to be disguised as if it was a measure to cope with two major national problems -illicit immigration and smuggling – and without seeming grossly unpatriotic, no one could raise a dissenting voice against it. …… As for my role as the GA of Jaffna, Dias said that while enabling the construction of the proposed military camps girdling the Northern Province, I should be unrelenting towards Tamil demands, and wherever possible, force confrontations with them and establish the government’s undisputed ascendancy. He emphasized that the Sinhala Only Act must be enforced at any cost, and was of the view that the government had failed so far to deal with the Tamils forcefully enough and saw me as the answer to the problem! In the course of that luncheon afternoon at the GFH in July 1963, N.Q.Dias also shared with me the story of how he metamorphosed from the stereotype CCS pukka sahib he once was, into the ultra nationalist and xenophobic he was now proud to be.’’’ – Into the turbulence of Jaffna, Neville Jayaweera, 5 October 2008, http://www.island.lk/2008/10/05/features2.html

          2. ”….forward with development and this include the north too”:

”The Northern and Eastern provincial councils that have been established do not enjoy the freedom to decide on their priorities. They have to function under the control of the Governors of the respective provinces who were one-time military commanders and dominate the decision making even though unelected. This means that the fundamental issues that gave rise to the war remain unresolved even as the government celebrates the fifth anniversary of the end of the war’’ – International Stakes Continue To Rise With Changes Next Door, Jehan Perera, 19 May 2014, https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/international-stakes-continue-to-rise-with-changes-next-door/
”Though provincial council elections were held in the north and east of the country, in effect the two governors of the north and east from the military and the extremely dense security forces present in the form of uniformed, plain clothed and para-militaries and reservists appear to govern that province” – Is reconciliation achievable without separation in Sri Lanka? Lionel Bopage, 1 May 2014, http://groundviews.org/2014/05/01/is-reconciliation-achievable-without-separation-in-sri-lanka/
’’According to complaints made, in the Eastern PC and NPC the Constitution works in the opposite direction! The CMs have become non-entities! In the Southern PC, the CM is ‘The Man’ because (Sinhalese-Sinhalese) political homogeneity exists between the center and the periphery’’ – Administrative Failure In The North, Austin Fernando, 20 April 2014, http://www.thesundayleader.lk/2014/04/20/administrative-failure-in-the-north/

State terrorism of 67yrs is unrelenting – it isn’t against ”terrorists” , it’s oppression of the ‘other’.
The army keeps grabbing more and more agriculture land and farm it and sell the produce to the landowners living in ”welfare centres” for 20+ yrs. The army is engaged in tourist business and block Tamils from fishing to let Sinhalese from the South to do fishing.
They not even allowing economic development – Rajiva Wijesinha: https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/a-presidency-under-threat-insecurity-and-incompetence/

This is annihilation of the ‘other’, not protection against ”terrorists” which is only a very convenient camouflage for state terror.

        DP,
Every minority feels everything a government does is oppressing them. Talk to any minority in any country. Talk to Blacks in the US and UK, talk to the Gypsies in EU, talk to the Russians in Ukraine: you will hear the same rhetoric that you indulge in.

You keep linking Colombo Telegraph for your information! Good for you but nobody takes those seriously. Colombo Telegraph does not allow me to submit links as references. You are a lucky minority you are allowed! Rajiva does not say what you are implying he is saying!!

Once you resort to terrorism you have give up everything. You are under suspicion and the gov. has enough loop holes to manipulate you using the term “terrorist”. That is what the West is doing with their Muslims too. You and Parayabakaran should have thought of these consequences. It is too late to complain now.

“Who in their right mind will remove an Army from a region where terrorism was incubated, matured, fought and eliminated, which took 30 years?”

Terrorism was incubated, matured, fought and eliminated. You right for a change, however it started in the late 1960’s terrorised the people and state in 1971 and between 1987 and 1991, yet the JVP is allowed to honour and remember its terrorist fallen comrade annually in the South.

We don’t see any large army camps mushrooming where JVP was active in the murder business, killed many politician, innocent civilian, policemen and members of the armed forces in the the process of establishing a dictatorship of the proletariat.

JVP has yet to surrender its arms.

We turn a blind eye because they are Sinhala/Buddhists and once JVP shared a bed with Mahinda, playing a role of a useful idiot.

      • 4
        1

        Vedda my friend,
You always try to act smart. JVP was a entirely a local entity and the gov. at that time took care of it as needed. These Sinhalese terrorist were massacred and that is what happens if you take arms against a state. There was no need to open up new army camps because the ones that were open was quite adequate to look after the areas involved. Did the JVP had sea tigers, black tigers, ‘submarines’, “fighter planes” and foreign funding and leaders living outside the country? How moronic are you to compare LTTE to JVP. How long did it take to eliminate the JVP? Compare that to the LTTE.

Their blatant lies and deceptions will be exposed and they will look naked in the eyes of the world. These murderers, plunderers and liars days are numbered and the slide down the precipice has commenced. It is only a matter of time before the the dooms day for Jarapassas. There are more things to come. To protect the army the Government will build walls around the areas and then confine the people into these areas so that they can close the people in like the Gaza. If the US and UK want war crimes tribunal to query then the Government can cite the support given by the US and UK to the Israeli Government.
This is one country not two like the battles raging in the middle east.

Ignoring the LTTE fluffer Fred Carver’s spin on things, the report actually reveals that land which was neglected and untended for decades is now being used for the development of houses, hospitals, agriculture and infrastructure. How horrific! Genocide!

I wonder if this report will get buried like the AAAS’s previous report on Sri Lanka, commissioned by AI, which exposed the LTTE Tamil lies about “mass graves”, “scorched earth”, “carpet bombing”, “indiscriminate shelling”, “1.5 million killed in 2 hours” etc :D

An invaluable report that presents irrefutable evidence exposing the highway robbery of valuable private property in Valikamam North in the Jaffna peninsula, by the government of Sri Lanka. Nothing can be hidden from the ‘ Eyes in the skies’ that are observing and beaming back minute details of ‘Everything’ below. These satellites cannot be denied visas to enter Sri Lanka by the perverse, and now jittery MR government!

The tears, agony, heartache and curses of the dispossessed in terms of loss of habitation and livelihoods; memories and millennia old history, will find their target. Their tears, agony ,heartache and curses will be mightier than any sword or guns in a Dharmic sense. Those who perpetrate such crimes convinced that the power they wield over hapless citizens is unquestionable and they are shielded by the power they enjoy, will be prosecuted under Karmic law sooner than later. When one sows the wind, one has to harvest the whirlwind! Karmic justice is relentless and absolutely fair.

Are you aware of land being taken over by the Gov. on a daily basis in the south? Have you written anything condemning those? Personally my family has lost over 20 acres at Teldeniya to the Mahavali project. Compensation was abysmal. According to you Sinhalese losing their land appears no concern for tears, agony or heartache. Your racist state of mind is clear. People like you making this kind of hate mongering statements is despicable, while calling your self a “Dr”!
This is the reason I don’t want the Army to be moved out of the north.

        Eusense,

Are you serious? Why should Narendran to write condemning those lands taken by Govt in the South? Why can’t you write condemning both? We Tamils concerned because these lands are taken by Sinhalese Government. Your land are taken for Sinhalese, not for Tamils. Your government did not lie to you but here the Govt lied about it and it is under military occupation. Is your land occupied by Military? You are the racist, not Narendran.

      • 8
        2

        Eusense,

I am concerned about injustice and unfairness anywhere, especially when it is unwarranted and unnecessary.
I look at all peoples in Sri Lanka as fellow citizens. If the Mahaveli project required your lands and you were adequately compensated , it was fair, however painful it may have been to you. It was in the national interest. If these criteria were not met, it was blatantly unfair and unjust, I know how unfair the land acquisition process has become in Sri Lanka. I have heard the laments of the heads of plantation corporations in the South on how plantation lands are being arbitrarily acquired by the armed forces. Around and in Colombo this acquisition process is driven by thuggery and murder, under the grand slogan of development. Do you know the quantum of land in the Welikanda area – a Mahaweli development zone- that has been cornered by incumbent politicians in the current government? This land will be allocated to anyone who has the capacity to pay multiple millions under the table.

This is one reason among many I want this government to go as soon as possible.

The Valikamam North lands are prime agricultural lands with the best soil in the island. They were developed over centuries to make them highly productive. My great grand mother hails from Vasavilan and as a child I witnessed how hard the farmers worked to improve soil productivity at a time when artificial fertilisers were not freely available. Cart loads of green leaves were transported from the leafy areas of the peninsula , especially Thenmarachchy, year after year and buried in that soil to improve its water retaining capacity and fertility. This was no mean effort and yet was carried out generation after generation. This land was improved with the sweat, tears and muscle ache of generations of one of the most enlightened farmers in the world. They understood ecology, soil science, organic farming and nature-friendly agricultural practices as no other in Sri Lanka. This permitted the Jaffna man to transport by the cart loads food products to the Kandyan Kingdom which was under British siege. I guess your are a Kandyan and you should know this part of your history. I am proud of it because one of my ancestors, Tissaveerasingham Netchingham Mudaliyar organised one such caravan to the Kandyan Kingdom under siege. This was the result of the friendship and good will that prevailed at that time between the citizens of Jaffna and the citizens of the Kandyan Kingdom. Let us cherish this history and take it forward.

The Valikamam a North soil has to be treasured by Sri Lanka and improved further, as our legacy for future generations. It should not become part of a mega-military project. What is unfolding is an unforgivable and unacceptable crime. It is also absolutely unjustifiable, even in the name of security- a much misused concept in what is a Sri Lanka today. The victims being Tamils is incidental, though not secondary, considering what drives politics and decision making in this country.

        Dr.RN

          2

          Narendran,
It is OK to show your disagreement with the gov.. And you should do so in a democratic country. I too do not agree with most activities of the current gov.. My family had no option other than handing over the land to the gov.. My parents only consolation was that it was given for the benefit of our country.

However, my issue with you is that in your post you depict that land acquisition is confined only to the north and the Tamils. Your heart warming rendition would anger Tamils who like my family had no other option than hand over the land to the gov. Frustrated, there is a good possibility that they resort to violence again. Not only that the Sinhalese who read your post will develop animosity towards you and Tamils who make the land acquisition a big issue and a crime against the Tamils, while the Sinhalese had no option other than hand over their land hands down.
Please keep in mind this land issue is not confined to the Tamils.

            2

            Eusense,

The issue is: Does what is happening in the South justify what is happening in the north to a people battered by war?

What is special about the report we are discussing is that it is irrefutable evidence of what is happening in the North and possibly in the East on a massive scale.

It is a pointer to a national problem.

            DR.RN

            • 2
              1

              Narendran,
It is not a case of justification of what is happening in the south and the north. It is you inflaming the Tamils and also the Sinhalese by spouting a hate mongering post. I have clearly indicated to you this in my earlier answer to you.
Are you implying that what is happening in the south should not happen in the north? Why? Because the north was battered by war?? Have you written any time thanking the government for ending this brutal war which brought peace to the people of the north? Have you written to Parayabakeran that the people of the north are battered enough by the war and he should stop this madness? Also, who started this 30 year war which took the north 50 years behind?

No, we are not discussing “irrefutable evidence of what is happening in the North and possibly in the East on a massive scale”. If you read my original post again, I am not disputing anything that is happening in the north and east but what I am saying is what is happening needs to happen in the north and east. Why? first, this region has to develop and progress. Tamil Terrorist took this region 50 years back. Second, Sri Lanka is still one country, it is not yet divided and separated as you and most other posters like to dream. Development activities should involve the whole country. I need the gov. to undertake development of the north also because 10 years down the road you will write accusing the Sinhalese and the gov. for ignoring the North and developing only the south!

It is very interesting how the tone of Eusense has changed while replying to Dr Rajasingham Narendran (Dr NR)

This is because the Good Dr replied to Eusense politely and in a civil manner. This brings out the good in Eusense as well. Note how on other occasions when people slam Eusense for his comments he comes out on the offensive as well.

Dr NR has always shown the way. Follow his way of having informed discussions, so this forum will start the healing process and show others how it can be done.

Lear’s three daughters could not agree how to divide up the land after he was gone. They destroyed themselves, and their families.

They BOUGHT them, Ta Modaya. The real land grab happens in Colombo is also done by Rajapakse family and their cronies. The government lands are sold around and lease around for next to nothing income to the government and the people of Sri Lanka. Can someone go back and check the assets these guys have amassed over last 10 years? Remember where the family was 15 years and 25 years ago? They wasted all the lands they got from the British Raj for their ‘service’. Then, Chamal had to work as a policeman to take care of the family. Mahinda could not even pay for a room when he went to Geneva in the 80s to dob in the UNP government. Gota worked in a Seven Eleven when he deserted the army and the country and ran to USA. They did not do any successful business, they simply don’t know how to do it (look at Mihin Lanka and the likes). Each handbag Shiranthi carries is worth over one year salary of an above average Sri Lankan.

Oh, even Ta Modayas of this world are also get financial benefits from the family.

“Then, Chamal had to work as a policeman to take care of the family. Mahinda could not even pay for a room when he went to Geneva in the 80s to dob in the UNP government. Gota worked in a Seven Eleven when he deserted the army and the country and ran to USA.”

Thank you Rohan. Boy, you are a straight talking, brave lad, aren’t you? I really appreciate your honesty.

Well :) thanks… I am far away from the reach of Gota’s white vans. I would be like a kitten, like everyone else, if I were in Sri Lanka.

DUMB CLOWN the Tamils BUY property with their SMART earned money unlike what is done in Jaffna where the ARMY (Proxies of the Govt) GRAB by HARD-LY earned rights..

IF YOU have the money, BUY as much property not Just in Colombo but also in Mahiyangana or even Jaffna.. As a citizen of SL YOU have a right to BUY property anywhere in SL.. so do the Tamils.

YOUR racism shows, its ppl like YOU who were instrumental in a case like 1983. Change ur mindset and THINK LANKAN.. and I am not a Tamil… ty

Wait, how do these Tamils earn so much money to grab up prime Colombo real estate? I didn’t realise there were thriving enterprises inside concentration camps and gas chambers :D

THE ONLY TARGET OF GOTAS GOVERNMENT IS MINORITY, THE DEVELOPMENT AREAS ARE EAR MARKED WHERE MIONRITY LIVES MORE. RACISM HAS COST EVERYTHING IN THIS COUNTRY BUT RULERS NEVER UNDERSTAND THIS, THEY POCKET THE COUNTY.

// I thought only cattle, DONKEYS and the like graze! Obviously! //

Huh! I thought, only people think about themselves. I just realised that animals (at least some species) also think about themselves all the time.

        Excellent reply!
90% of the posters here have no substance or value in them. Name calling and stupid statements like “grazing” here are the norm. I thought Narendran was a reasonable guy to discuss. No, he too starts with Tamil issues and then goes out of topic and make irrelevant posts and finally end up talking about gov. corruption.

I’m sure there’s enough punnakku doled out here for the Jaffna We Thamizh that they can have a grand feast even without these “traditional grazing grounds” :D

People, people, the land grabed by these robbers are not for any benefit to srilankans. They are investing in foreign countries for the rainy days when srilanka bacome somalia, the robbers will disappear to other countries(not new to Gotha, once vanished to US and came back after treatment). This is like some chip-in finance companies, one morning they take every thing and vanish, then we srilankan modiaas have to go back to the international community to find these people and freeze their assets or bring back to hang them. Please use pea brain. Stitch in time saves nine.

Tamil colonization of Colombo is an epidemic.

30 years ago only Sinhalese, Muslims and a few burghers lived in Colombo permanently. Now there are Tamil ghettos everywhere. Everywhere Tamils in Colombo. But Jaffna is still Tamil only.

    How come?

      FF:-
“But Jaffna is still Tamil only.”
Think a little way back. Do you think the Sinhalese people would have survived in the arid land of Jaffna, as the hardworking Tamil People have done? The Sinhalese like an Easy Life!

That is why “…Jaffna is still Tamil only”.

Now that there is clear evidence that the lands that were acquired by the GOSL/Army have not been utilized for which they were forcibly acquired , TNA should raise this matter in the parliament for what it is worth. At least it will be in the Hansard and future historians and others will have this valuable source of information,
Additionally instead of talking the Tamil parliamentarians should visit families who have been harassed, intimidated, murdered or raped and get the details and raise these issues in parliament, so that the International Community and the Tamil Diaspora will know exactly what has/ is happening to these affected people. The Tamils voted for you all in the hope that you will be there when help is needed. For instance if a woman is raped or killed, the representative of the area should be the first one to be there. It is your duty and the people expect that from you, instead of visiting them only when you want their vote.

Someone asked why tamils are living in colombo.Simple for people have at least a little bit of common sense. The answer is, colombe is the capital-go and see Mumbai, London and many other countries. This is the reason tamils wanted to develop jaffna as the second capital- now there is enough money in diaspora’s hand to do that – we do not have to sell srilankan land or beg from countries with worst humanitary record. There is a saying – garland at monkeys hand – if Runil is a private school man, MR and co from council estate.

India promised to put up 50,000 houses for the war displaced. After five long years ONLY 15000 have so far been constructed. They take time and material to construct and DO NOT appear out of thin on day one. The Army is no different.

    My dear eusense,

You the Sinhalese are dead scared for tigers. If you think that the placement of 150000 militaries in the North can save you cowards, you are an idiot. You wait and see that all of your armies will be wiped out in no time when the time comes. I do not know where you cowardish Sinhalese are going to run? I had a dream that you all were diving into the indian ocean including your Gnanasara.

Could you please think seriously as to who were the tigers? India is currently completed 30000 houses in the North and East and still buiding more than 30000 houses. Basil has signed an agreement for India to build a Cultural Centre in the heart of Jaffna Town with cost more than a billion rupees. The senior minister of Education has singed an aggrrement with Indian Govt. to build an Engineering faculty and an Agricultural faculty in Kilinochi as the branches of University of Janna. The land in Kilinochi has already been allocated and the works have started. Do you know the Indian Lecturers and professors will start teaching in these universities till the faculties produce their own dons.

India including their private sectors invested billions of dollars in Western Province. Almost all the Fashion businesses in Colombo and 90% of IT and Communication businesses belong to Muslims and Indians.

eusense, please do not be a stupid idiot. Think about the realities. Srilanka will be under India during the next 25 years and you will have to learn HINDI.

Do not your waste time and throwing your emotions and angry to reply me. Whatever the way you reply me, you cannot stop you child learning HINDI to get jobs in Srilanka.

      RadhakrishnaIyer,
Sir, thank you very much for enlightening me. As you advice I will try not to be a “stupid idiot” specially in the face of a person like you who is intellectually superior beyond the level which I can comprehend. What should I work on now? To hand over Sri Lanka to you or India?

if this land is in Jaffna , jaffna was under govet rule for ever . Then if the land was abandoned for more than 10 yesrs this should be state land . Now the [Edited out] tamils from Canada want to claim it . too bad . Scarbaria is your eelam .
