The Police have arrested two youth in Mawanella for allegedly damaging several Buddha statues in the area last few days creating religious tensions.
One suspect named M. Ashfar was handed over to the Police by villagers. Both suspects are expected to be produced before the Magistrate today.
The Police are yet to establish if the attack was an organized act of violence to create religious tensions among the Sinhalese and Muslim communities in the area or an isolated incident. Investigations are also underway to ascertain if the two suspects have connections with any extremist group.
Issuing a statement on the matter, UNP Chairman Minister Kabir Hashim condemned the acts of violence committed against places of worship in Mawanella.
“As soon as I heard about the recent attacks I instructed the police to investigate and arrest those responsible,” the UNP Chairman also said, in his statement.

Immediately police arrested two former LTTE persons in Mullaitivu. Karuna told us that Pottu Amman is living in some European country. Ministers and President visited funerals of the policemen. Hisbullah who was responsible for this and boasted over media, has not been charged for hatred yet, despite being brought to the notice of authorities. Recently it has been brought to the notice that a Hindu temple is lying in ruins around Sammanhurai area which has been left abandoned by Tamils who were ethnically cleansed by Muslims from that village. Now the Muslim racists have got the courage to try their tricks with Buddhists and will receive proper treatment in due course. Kattakudi Mosque is a hot bed of Islamic extremism then and now and Muslim home guards used to store their arms in this mosques and come to collect them and pray , before attacking the surrounding Tamil Hindu villages. This is why the LTTE attacked the mosque. However the government and other international press and governments who were siding with the Sinhalese supressed all this truth. These Muslim home guards killed thousands of Tamil Hindus and destroyed many Hindu temples in the east and this was still going on and nothing was done , as the victims were Hindu Tamils and the Muslim ministers powerful. The Muslims were being portrayed as the victims when in reality there were the agressors and Sri Lankan armed forces backing them. Now that has started to happen in Sinhalese areas , the truth is coming out.

I think Lanken Police should be even more powerful than they are today. We need lot more personnel with better edcuation (basic degree level) be part of local police services. Then only they can improve their services. In Europe, police services are high advanced and that is the reason them to maintain such good services.
Even in Singapore and Malaysia, Police services are very powerful. Also in Thailand I have noticed police services are much stronger than in CURRENT day srilanka.
I thought local police services in mid 70ties to late 80ties were better than that of today. We had a greater respect on lanken police then. But today, so called media revolution has influenced on police services in a bad manner. Rascals let dominated in the society as no times in the past.

Because I am the only Sinhalese in this forum who supports a separate Homeland for Tamils ( all Tamil speaking people irrespective of their religion, caste or the date of arrival. ) . You can hardly say Islam protects others rights, they have destroyed others rights for centuries.

I fully endorse what Ajith tells in the column. I do not know who is behind these vandalism but Muslims were breaking Hindu god statues and vandalising Hindu temples in the Mannar area and in many parts of the eastern province . In many instances Mosques have been built over a Hindu temple destroyed by these Muslim Wahhabi/Salafist fanatics. These acts were aided and abetted by their local Muslim politicians and establishment. They were doing this impunity , as the Muslims with Sinhalese settler help took over the rule of the east and have been very busy marginalising the indigenous Tamil Hindu majority who are the real owners of the east. Destroying their culture and religious symbols , so that can install Wahabi/Salafist rule and create an exclusive Islamic east., just like in Kattankudi , where Tamils Hindus were all chased off in the 1980s with the help of the Sinhalese armed forces and police. Even now the occupying Sinhalese armed forces/police and the Sinhalese establishment were giving subtle encouragement and turning a blind eye to this deliberate vandalism and destruction of Hindu temples and statues in the east and parts of Mannar by the Muslims, as they overjoyed by the destruction of Tamil Hindu symbols in the north and east by these immigrant Dravidian fake Arab South Indian origin Muslims who only arrived in the N/E as refugees a few centuries ago , fleeing persecution but now are planning to take over. Now when it has started in Sinhalese areas they are up in arms. What was good for the Hindu Tamils is not good for the Sinhalese Buddhist. You reap what you sow.

Have you forgotten how the entire Muslim Population of the North, numbering almost a 100,000, was mercilessly and barbarously evicted from their homes with only the clothes they were wearing at an hour’s notice in 1990? Of all people I know why you hate me most. Because I am the only Sinhalese in this forum who supports a separate Homeland for Tamils ( all Tamil speaking people irrespective of their religion, caste or the date of arrival. ) . Nothing terrifies a Tamil than this thought of living in a Tamil only enclave while forfeiting the right to live outside the boundary. Let me repeat my main line of argument. Tamils must be given the choice of a separate Homeland OR the right to live anywhere, DEFINITELY not both (which is an illogical, self-contradictory combination that invalidates the whole rationale for a Homeland). On my part I plead with my Tamil brothers and sisters to choose the latter option.

What did you guys do to help them? We the Muslims saved too many Tamil lives during Black July from those rioting Sinhalese. Some of the area where Muslims were dominating, never let those rioters come into the streets, Aluth Kade for example. But you guys only remember those thuggish and Kudu karayo Muslims who were also involving or supporting the rioters. Even good Sinhalese saved many lives.
