The Police have arrested two youth in Mawanella for allegedly damaging several Buddha statues in the area last few days creating religious tensions.
One suspect named M. Ashfar was handed over to the Police by villagers. Both suspects are expected to be produced before the Magistrate today.
The Police are yet to establish if the attack was an organized act of violence to create religious tensions among the Sinhalese and Muslim communities in the area or an isolated incident. Investigations are also underway to ascertain if the two suspects have connections with any extremist group.
Issuing a statement on the matter, UNP Chairman Minister Kabir Hashim condemned the acts of violence committed against places of worship in Mawanella.
“As soon as I heard about the recent attacks I instructed the police to investigate and arrest those responsible,” the UNP Chairman also said, in his statement.

Native Vedda can carry out a propaganda campaign among the Tamils (all Tamil speaking people irrespective of their religion caste or the date of arrival) over the barbarian and genocidal nature of Sinhala Buddhists. That helps immensely.
