“Sinhalese Buddhism has made no significant contribution to the evolution of a non-violent social ideology”. ~ Jayadeva Uyangoda
Just like ever-green songs – Sinhala Buddhist nationalism and racism are live topics anytime in this land of compassion. These sentiments are characterised by blind impulsive reactions driven by emotions and prejudice, rather than by caution, rationality and objectivity. Additionally, serve as a convenient whip in the hands of politicians, racists and other several types of opportunists. Circumstances may be aggravated when the saffron clad elite who share such characteristics takes the lead. Buddha, the Dhamma and especially, the Kalama Sutta which encourages critical thinking and rejection of blind following comes to mind with profound sadness.
Equating Buddhism To A Race
In Delict law, fraudulent misrepresentation involves knowingly or recklessly making a false statement that misleads another person, who relies on it in decision-making, resulting in economic loss due to the deception.
Not direct, but to draw a close analogy, matters relating to Buddhism, religion, ethnicities, nationalism are presented in a confused format to the Sinhala people by some of the monks, especially to the rural folks. In Buddhist culture a monk is highly revered and the people rely on them. A monk is a formidable “influencer” on the minds of the Buddhist population. Some of these monks, use this position to purposely inculcate divisive thoughts in the minds of the innocent Sinhala population as has been publicly known. It may be for political advantage, opportunity to self-enrich or pure racism. On observation, it seems that under the guise of cultural preservation pre-eminence is given to Buddhism, claiming that Sri Lanka is the sacred land of Buddhism and that it belongs to the Sinhalese race only. Thus, they have the prime responsibility of protecting Buddhism and this sacred land.
Of course, the learned Elders of Buddhism would say that this notion is far away from the Dhamma. After all, Siyalu sathwayo niduk wethwa: Nirogee wethwa: (May all beings be safe. May all beings be free from suffering) applies to all human beings. It never said, Siyalu Bauddhayo or Siyalu Sinhalayo niduk wethwa: (May all Buddhists or Sinhalese be safe…)
Attacks on Muslims and Christians
The popular narrative as claimed in temples and by politicians that Sri Lanka is a sacred land has never been helpful in creating an environment for coexistence. Monastic political activism and xenophobic rhetoric have been instrumental in occupying the minds of the people via such misrepresentation. In fact, some Sinhalese with extremist views try to draw a parallel with the genocidal Zionist state of Israel whose claims are that of a ‘chosen people’ and ‘chosen land’. The perception that the Sinhalese are the protectors of Buddhism and this so-called sacred land are misleading. They have not only been influenced to literally take ownership of a universal Dhamma but also paved the way to look at the Tamils, Muslims and Burghers as unpatriotic, invaders and aliens.
This state of mind provides justification to deny, suppress or make those of other communities to live like second class citizens in this country. Religious minorities like Christians also faced severe discrimination and attacks on several of its Ministries and churches. Pastors and church goers have been attacked and Christians forced to practise their faith in a state of fear. Political scientist, Professor Neil De Votta writes: “fundamental belief anchoring Sinhalese Buddhist nationalism is that Sri Lanka has been preserved for Sinhalese Buddhists, and minorities live there only because of Buddhists’ sufferance. This sentiment automatically privileges Buddhists, marginalizes those of other religions, and justifies Sinhalese Buddhist superordination and minority subordination”. (Policy Studies 40: Sinhalese Buddhist Nationalist Ideology).
One can argue that the constitution has enshrined fundamental rights but, in most instances, it remains only on paper. Weak enforcement of discrimination laws and hate speech laws much contributed to worsen the situation and encouraged racism to flourish. Institutional and structural racism has taken deep root – meaning the bureaucracy and police forming part of it.
Sinha Le and Asabbiyyah
After the end of the civil war in 2009 against the Tamil tigers, campaign against the other ethnic and religious minorities intensified, inebriated by the victory. It was common to see the display of offensive stickers on vehicles with a sense of victory and pride looking down upon the other communities. Local readers may recollect the proliferation of some of them – “Sinha le” (Lion blood), “Budun ge Deshaya” (Land of Buddha), “I am a Buddhist”, “Proud to be a Buddhist”.
Ibn Khaldun (1332-1406) the great Arab Islamic Philosopher and considered the father of Sociology, in his seminal work “Muqaddamah” refers to the idea of “Asabiyyah”. What it means is ‘group feeling or solidarity’, triggered by a new source of enthusiastic collective identity and engendering solidarity.
Having finished off with one minority community – the Tamils, attention was focused on the polarisation of the Muslims. The post-civil war period witnessed an unprecedented wave of Islamophobic hate campaign against the Muslim community. These were spearheaded by several groups of monks, Sinhala nationalist political parties and racist Sinhalese organisations with the blessings of the power that be. It was deliberate, malign, well planned and efficiently executed. Creating mistrust between the Sinhalese and Muslims and stereotyping the Muslim community religiously and culturally. Several media outlets and social media networks worked to exacerbate the situation. “The success of fear-based news relies on presenting dramatic anecdotes in place of scientific evidence, … depicting categories of people as dangerous.” (Psychology Today). Depiction of Muslims as dangerous, terrorists and unpatriotic was successfully achieved by the outrageous acrimony directed at the Muslim people.
Pohosath Ratak: Lassana Jeewithayak – Challenge
To effectively address the deep-rooted issue of racism in Sri Lanka, the government should establish a representative independent Body composed of intellectuals, academics, religious dignitaries, and civil society representatives. This Body must be legally mandated to investigate the origins, evolution, and persistence of racism, particularly in relation to politics, religion, and the role of monks and temples. It can benefit from the multitudes of research materials. It should also examine how certain factors from ethnic and religious minorities may unintentionally contribute to racism.
Reviewing school text books on history and culture where heroism and contributions by the different ethnic groups are promoted rather than one-sided chauvinism which causes bias and prejudice in the minds of the future leaders. Further, include multidisciplinary analysis from fields such as sociology, law, media, and psychology. Public engagement through forums and education campaigns should be integral, alongside media regulation to combat bias. Furthermore, the Body should monitor institutional racism, publish annual reports, and recommend policy changes to strengthen legal protections and promote coexistence.
The challenge to the NPP government is to have such a comprehensive and inclusive approach to dismantle systemic racism and build a truly “thriving nation: A beautiful life” (Pohosath ratak: Lassana Jeewithayak).

Sri Lankan politics have been corrupted by a coterie of yellow robed parasites masquerading as religious reverends. With no education in the history, culture or social dynamics of government, these fellows “advise” the politicians based largely on their own welfare as a protected class that forcibly take reserved bus seats and make money with thriving businesses while ensnaring frustrated women who seek the refuge of a temple. The NPP has a duty to make these parasites work for a living, tilling their own vegetable plots and preparing their own meals like in other Buddhist countries of South-East Asia. It is often the poor who seek the solutions offered by religious dogma and are exploited to provide meals, sex and donations to enrich the clergy. A secular country and government with progressive philosophy must clean up this mess also.

Anyone with some sanity will have to agree with LP about how lanken society operates.
The biggest question is how many people in society are sane and awake, which is less than 10% according to my records. If one wags the tail, the other follows suit, creating a domino effect. Overall, people are more stupefied than they appear.
Most importantly, the NPP government and its leadership have been inextricably linked to religious sentiments since he was elected by 42% of the island’s population. I believe the culture has been established in such a way that any leader has no choice but to seek approval first from the religion’s parasites before proceeding, despite the fact that these parasites may know nothing but to enjoy their monastic life.

Efforts to do this recently have caused howls of protest from fossilised Mahanayakas and other opportunists.
The PM should have introduced these within 3 months of being elected, not now when the honeymoon is long over.
One thing that should be done is the removal of Dharmapala the fascist from the list of “National Heroes”.

A rather amusing article. Considering Islam has conquered at least 3 continents by force. If not for the Poles, Europe today would be a fiefdom of the Ottomans. At least Christianity has served (at times) as a moderating force. Due in large part to Christianity, the barbarian Goths, Vandals, and Visigoths were finally civilized.
But don’t fool yourself. Muslims are not some persecuted people under attack by racist Sinhala-Buddhists. They are the fastest growing demographic. In fact, they are growing faster than all other ethnic groups combined . Meanwhile, nearly every majority-Muslim country is at least 85% Muslim. Some are even 95%.
Now Europe is beginning to wake up. Ireland is a very good example, where foreign-born are now at least 25%. Either the “leaders” will do something about (mostly Islamic) immigration, or the UK and even EU will dissolve, as we saw with Brexit.

During the Middle Ages, the Islamic Golden Age (8th–14th centuries) served as a vital bridge for transmitting, preserving, and expanding knowledge that significantly influenced the West and contributed to Europe’s emergence from its own “Dark Ages”. While Islam did not solely bring civilization to the West, Muslim scholars and institutions played a pivotal role in creating a robust intellectual culture that directly fueled the European Renaissance.
Key contributions to Western knowledge and education
Preservation and transmission of ancient knowledge.
Translation Movement: In centers like Baghdad’s “House of Wisdom,” Muslim scholars translated and synthesized texts from ancient Greek, Persian, and Indian traditions into Arabic. These translations preserved works by thinkers such as Aristotle, Euclid, and Galen that were otherwise lost to the Latin-speaking world.
Transmission to Europe: This preserved knowledge later made its way into Europe, primarily through the translation efforts of scholars in multicultural centers like Al-Andalus (Islamic Spain) and Sicily.
Scientific and mathematical innovations
Mathematics: The work of Persian mathematician Al-Khwarizmi led to the development of algebra, and his name is the origin of the term “algorithm”. Muslim scholars also introduced the Hindu-Arabic numeral system, including the concept of zero, which revolutionized European mathematics.

anti-genocide protests against Israel are being framed as exclusively Muslim protests is a recognized tactic of disinformation.
While some protest narratives are subject to manipulation, the claim that protests framed as Muslim-led are “fake” and originated purely as “European against genocide” is misleading and inaccurate. Instead, disinformation campaigns have often attempted to falsely frame genuine anti-genocide protests to serve political agendas.
social media is a hotbed for misinformation, with narratives surrounding protests frequently being manipulated by various actors.

Yes correct 100%
An article that highlights both past and current activities for the betterment of society should strive to guide future generations by providing constructive and healthy criticism. This type of writing can enhance coexistence and foster mutual understanding. However, if these discussions are tainted by racial bias or prejudice, they will merely sow division and mistrust within communities.
Comparing incidents of communal conflict in one country to those in another should be done with care, as such comparisons can heighten unnecessary tension among diverse groups. Sadly, some biased media outlets intentionally twist facts and stir up discord among communities rather than encouraging peace and unity.

History is cyclical. Patterns repeat. Did you know that Indonesia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, etc. used to be majority Buddhist & Hindu? Now of course, Indonesia is the world’s largest Sunni Islamic nation and Afghanistan is run by the Taliban. Next on the chopping block is India.
Hindus will become the world’s third largest population by 2050, while India will overtake Indonesia as the country with the largest Muslim population , according to a new study.

Sri Lanka is likely to follow a similar pattern given current population trends, though an exact date is difficult to pinpoint.

This should answer your question:
“It is not worth an intelligent man’s time to be in the majority. By definition, there are already enough people to do that.” – Hardy
History is cyclical. The characters may change, the game is the same.

Hello Lester,
Why do you quote this obnoxious “twat”. He notoriously got this wrong “”no one has yet discovered any warlike purpose to be served by the theory of numbers or relativity, and it seems unlikely that anyone will do so for many years”. This has been proven profoundly wrong. Number theory is fundamental to modern cryptography, which was vital for code-breaking in WWII and is essential for modern data security; and the principles of relativity [e=mc2 ] are the basis for nuclear energy and weapons”.
You said “History is cyclical. The characters may change, the game is the same. Around 70- 100 thousand years ago Modern Humans left Africa to colonise most of the World. We went from Hunter Gatherers through the Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age and on to the Modern Age. Nothing Cyclical about that. Show me Flat Screen TVs or Spacecraft from the Stone Age.
Possibly Trump with your support will send us back to the Stone Age.
So please educate us, tell us what “the game” is?

“no one has yet discovered any warlike purpose to be served by the theory of numbers or relativity…”
He was distinguishing between pure and applied maths. When you use number theory to build a cipher, that is no longer pure maths, it is computing. Pure mathematics can stand by itself, other disciplines must borrow the language of pure mathematics to remain cohesive. The only metric for pure maths is proof . You don’t need that to build a machine. Here is Hardy again:
“Pure mathematics can stand by itself; other disciplines must borrow its language to remain cohesive.”
“Mathematics is not a contemplative but a creative subject; it is concerned not with facts but with constructions.”
“what “the game” is?”
You should watch the billionaires. Ray Dalio, Chamath P, Ackman, etc. They are dropping many hints, while gaming the system.

1. Hitler was a great man
2. Jews are from the devil
3. Shia/Alawites/Druze deserve to be killed (even though this has nothing to do with Israel)
4. Israel should not exist

davidthegood,
It’s just a deflection tactic. How can a group of claim to be persecuted if they are reproducing like rabbits all over the world? With a real genocide, the population numbers never return to their original amount. The number of Jews in Germany and Poland is still less than pre-WW2. There were about 3.3 million Jews in Poland before WW2. Now there are only about 17,000 or so. Meanwhile, in Gaza, Hamas has already replaced its lost fighters. The statistic I saw was that for every 1 Hamas fighter killed, 3 replacements were available.
/
MongolianThroatSinger / November 1, 2025

Just Curious : What does “persecution” have to do with “reproduction” ?
Are you suggesting that Jews for example, stopped reproducing because they are (apparently) a persecuted community ? If so there should be fewer every day since they have been (and still are) claiming persecution for millennia ! That’s clearly not the case
I wonder whether the reason for the smaller numbers of Jews in Poland is that they pushed off to the US and the artificially-created Israel because they found they were really no longer truly welcome in Poland and other parts of Europe after WWII. ?

Decency is inextricably linked to a person’s upbringing and development. Lester is known to attack Chiv by calling him a latrine cleaner and me a cockroach. This inhuman behaviour is common to Deepthi’s permanent attacks when she is not in hibernation mode. We do not need any more proof to conclude that the man hiding behind the avatar Lester is the same person who has been completely rejected by society.
Only by commenting on incoherent posts (malle pol) has he been able to attract attention. That is primarily a psychological issue. This man, like the beach boys, is becoming a source of frustration for CT commenters.
To everyone’s note:
Furthermore, we Sinhalese have exported far more unskilled workers to oil-rich Middle Eastern countries than Indians or our ethnic minorities on our island. Each time I wait for my transit flights in Dubai and Doha, I am forced to observe that a greater number of our Sinhala lads are employed as latrine cleaners in that region of the world. Knowing the facts, Lester and other paid Rajapakshe supporters should avoid making such racial statements in public.

At the time of Independence there were locals who were speaking either Sinhala or Tamil. Had the Muslims thought themselves as Tamils and fought for their rights to live as equals, the country would have thrived. When Tamils were being oppressed by the racists Sinhala Governments Muslims decided to keep silent and benefitted by buying the Tamils properties businesses at rock bottom prices.
They colluded with the majority race and caused deaths and destructions to the minorities.
Muslims also by identifying themselves not locals and were able to study in English medium in schools and were able to thrive professionally and economically.

Mr. Mass Usuf
Your article is full of hatred against Sinhalese Buddhists. Reading “Kaalama Sutta” doesn’t make your mind free from hatred. Instead, you should practice “meditation” to overcome your aversion to Sinhalese Buddhists. If there is anything similar in the Noble Quran, you may practice it.
You even contradict your own opinion against Sri Lanka in many instances. You rightfully called my country “the land of compassion”. And, then you condemn the notion that Sri Lanka is a sacred land as a myth. Can you name any other country that is called a land of compassion? No. Because Sri Lanka is the only country which practices Theravada Buddhism in its original form. And, compassion is one of the four pillars of the foundation of Buddhism. The other three are; loving-kindness, empathetic joy, and equanimity. For your information, aversion, cruelty, envy, revenge and partiality are not part of Buddhism.
Buddhism is the only religion in the world which is discredited and defamed freely by the people of “other religions”. You must understand that you have no expertise, knowledge or experience to criticize the role of Buddhist monks.

“And, compassion is one of the four pillars of the foundation of Buddhism.”
But with terrorists, compassion may not be the best solution. A lot of presidents, prime ministers, and others tried to negotiate with Prabhakaran. All of them failed. Even his right-hand man, Balasingham, realized you can’t negotiate with that guy. Karuna also saw the writing on the wall and took a quick exit. At the end, the Army did the right thing, which was a quick execution. In fact, execute his whole family (Machiavelli would agree). Some call it a war crime. Can it be a war crime, if the man was handing cyanide capsules out to young children to fight his war. More like karma.
I believe Israel is in a similar situation, with a similar group of terrorists. Negotiation works with rational agents, not those who are driven by psychopathic tendencies.

No, absolutely not. There is no comparison in Israel’s genocide in Palestine.
Israel invaded Gaza which is already an open-air-prison with a 18-year sea, air and land blockade, and killed innocent civìlians and others who took up arms against the Israeli settler colonists in the absence of a civilian government. Hamas fighters are not terrorists. They fought for the freedom of their country. Once Israel leaves Gaza and the independence of Palestine is guaranteed, there is no reason for them to engage in an armed struggle.

Champa,
There are many Muslims today who still advocate for Hitler and his (fascist), antisemitic ideology. This relationship is nothing new, it goes back to WW2, when thousands of Muslims fought in the foreign legions of the Waffen SS .
Tens of thousands of Muslims fought for the Nazis in World War Two. DW spoke with historian David Motadel about whether pragmatism or anti-Semitism drove Adolf Hitler’s overtures and why some Muslim leaders backed him
https://www.dw.com/en/how-nazis-courted-the-islamic-world-during-wwii/a-41358387
This trend is still ongoing. For example, the autobiography of Hitler, “Mein Kampf”, has long been a best seller in Turkey.
At 2:52, the Muslim guest shows a large swastika displayed in his living quarters: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1i5z5RVoLFM. This is the first time I have seen anyone going live on social media and proudly displaying a swastika.
You can see here, the antisemitism isn’t just related to Israel/Gaza par se, but goes much deeper. There is a clear psychopathic tendency at play. Keeping in mind, these are not people in Gaza (one could rationalize their hostility to Israel). These are educated Muslims advocating for a virulent, fascist ideology (National Socialism).

The Catholic Church has covered up the systematic Sexual and Physical abuse by both Priests and Nuns in many countries. Christianity also purports to be “Compassionate”. What people of a Religious Persuasion do and what they say, may be diametrically opposed. Religion may give them an umbrella of protection against investigation and prosecution, by closing ranks and covering up their crimes.
Whether people are religious or not, look at what they actually do, not what they say.

“Myanmar is not exactly a modicum of “Compassion” is it?”
Who is causing trouble in Myanmar? Surely not the religion of peace?
“Christianity also purports to be “Compassionate”.
There is no modern-day Christian equivalent of Shariah or ISIS.

That is allowed under Shariah. As is stoning, beheading, and slavery. When the Yazidi women were captured, the muftis would issue fatwas to legitimize their status as slaves.
“Fatwa No. 64” refers to an edict issued by the
Islamic State’s (IS) “Committee of Research and Fatwas” on January 29, 2015, which provided detailed rules and justifications for the sexual enslavement of female captives.
This fatwa was among a trove of documents captured by U.S. Special Operations Forces during a raid in Syria in May 2015 and later reviewed by news organizations. It appears to be the first documented instance where IS codified sexual relations with female prisoners.
One of these female prisoners was taken to Gaza and later freed from captivity by the IDF.

Hello Lester,
I know you are a supporter of Dictatorships, but have you forgotten that there is a Military Junta in Myanmar?
Slavery, Stoning and Burning to Death are all permitted in the Bible as is Genocide (Amalekites). See (Exod 21:2-11; Lev 25:44-46) on Slavery and in the New Testament “Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and trembling, in singleness of heart, as you obey Christ” Ephesians 6:5-9
There is not a single condemnation in the Bible of Slavery.
You are after all a devout Christian.

Dictatorship is another loaded expression that is part and parcel of liberal ideology.
“Slavery, Stoning and Burning to Death are all permitted in the Bible as is Genocide”
Regardless, there are no Christian priests encouraging Christians to engage in this kind of behavior today. If you can find an example, let us know.
“There is not a single condemnation in the Bible of Slavery.”
Ancient people owned slavery, no one is denying that. On the other hand, Jesus never owned a slave, where “Prophet” Muhammed took captured women (from battle) as slaves and added them to his concubine.
/
LankaScot / November 3, 2025
Hello Lester,
Did you not read Ephesians 6:5-9? Jesus never condemned Slavery, don’t you find that strange? Read Luke 17:7-10 for what Jesus actually said about Slavery –
“Who among you would say to your slave who has just come in from ploughing or tending sheep in the field, “Come here at once and take your place at the table”? 8 Would you not rather say to him, “Prepare supper for me, put on your apron and serve me while I eat and drink; later you may eat and drink”?
Jesus may not have owned a Slave, but from the above he took slavery for granted.

As I said, slavery was an accepted practice during ancient times. On the other hand, a so-called “prophet” or holy man would not own slaves. This kind of person rejects any and all earthly possessions in favor of the next life. You can still find them in India; they wear the equivalent of rags and own nothing (except their clothes). The same as during the time of Lord Buddha.
Muhammed was definitely not a prophet, by any metric. The claim about the Angel Gabriel is just a hallucination. In the video I linked above to the young men in Germany, you can see how easily they smoke. Smoking is known to induce hallucinations.
Cigarette smoking is strongly associated with psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia
https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6604123/
Hookah is stronger than traditional cigarettes. This explains a lot.
Hookahs Are Dangerous Compared with a single cigarette, smoking hookah for “one session” delivers 25 times the tar, 125 times the smoke, 2.5 times the nicotine, and 10 times the carbon monoxide, according to research from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Hello Lester,
I used to go to Souk Waqif in Doha with one of my Colleagues, a West African/British Muslim. After a meal he would smoke the Hookah, however he did not inhale. I asked him “why smoke at all”. He replied that it was for show, but also he knew how dangerous smoking was if you inhaled.
All of the Religious miracles and visitations by Angels etc. are all either Fabrications or Hallucinations.
Smoking Opium is definitely associated with psychotic events, however saying “Smoking is known to induce hallucinations” hasn’t been proven for tobacco use. Heavy drinking and smoking usually go hand in hand and separating out the cause of symptoms is not easy.

“You are after all a devout Christian.”
Not at all. I already said, “Jesus” is likely the Greek God Dionysus. Whether the man existed at all is open to question.
With that said, you cannot deny there is a humanizing element to Christianity. You cannot rationalize certain things to most humans, e.g. death, on the basis of logic alone. Just like you failed to understand Malthus (exponential population growth leads invariably conflict) and Leonard failed to understand that IQ is normalized. Much simpler to make up stories about angels, devils, and evil Jews with flying machines. LieZeera can add sound and video. This is why organized religion is effective.
There is a serious issue with certain aspects of Islam, however. It is incompatible with Western values: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYaAcl1Bjq0&pp=0gcJCQMKAYcqIYzv. The followers need to let go of the literal interpretation of Quran. Otherwise more conflicts are inevitable.

No. I insist, Sri Lanka is the ONLY country which practices Theravada Buddhism in its “original form”.
There is no other country other than Sri Lanka where Buddhism is an integral part of the daily lives of Buddhists.
Sri Lanka is the only country which follows the Full Moon Day as a day of religious retreat where Buddhists practice Lord Buddha’s teachings in participating in alms giving, observing self-discipline and meditating.
Sri Lanka is the only Buddhist country where you can hear Buddhist protective chanting (Pirith) on a daily basis.
I can give a long list to prove my point. But, one may not see it in visible form in Sri Lanka, as Sri Lanka is not governed by Buddhists.
/

Hello Champa,
Please remember, I live here in Central Province and my Wife and Relatives are all Buddhist. Yes there is an hours chanting of Priths on the Radio. To most of my relatives (especially the younger generation) Buddhism is NOT an integral part of their daily lives. Even Poya Days are not what you imagine; it just means that the Sinhalese shops (and Banks etc.) are closed.
How do you know what the “original form” of Buddhism was? Do you mean after the first, second or third Conclave subsequent to the Buddha’s death?
Apart from the Buddhist Ceremonies for the “Rites of Passage” and some special events, people here do not visit the Temples regularly. I have discovered that quite a few beliefs here are not Buddhist, but Hindu (Cult of Pattini) e.g. Kiri-ammāwarungè dānaya Ceremony.

Lankascot,
Don’t mix it up. According to Buddha’s true teachings, what is commonly referred to as Buddhagama is not Buddhism. The majority of them seek out fictions and rituals that have evolved over decades in that country. Some temples have created new types of PINKAMA events to collect large sums of money from their followers. In my childhood, in the 1970s and 1980s, our people did not march after the KATINA pinkama to the degree , as they do today.
Hypocrites who entered SANGA hood have undermined the true virtues of Buddhism. It’s all become a business now. I no longer respect BUDDHAGAMA followers, but rather genuine Buddhist followers that I have met in Europe.

“Kiri-ammāwarungè dānaya Ceremony” is a Sinhalese Buddhist ritual. Hindus have no knowledge about it. “Pattini” is not an Indian word either. It is a Sinhala word the meaning of which is a married mother.

For thousands of years, Sinhalese Buddhist monks were the protectors of this land, which was first called, “Thapo Ravana” and then “Sinhaladvipa”.
Even sea pirates, oriental and occidental explorers, traders and former European settler colonists have recognized ancient Sri Lanka as the land of the Sinhalese whose religion was Buddhism.
Before the arrival of European settler colonists, all Sinhalese were Buddhists.
It was the Sinhalese Buddhists, NOT Muslims or Tamils, who fought against settler colonists to protect this land!!!!! Thousands of the Sinhalese freedom fighters were killed due to the information provided by Malabar/Malay spies who were placed in Sinhalese areas by the British.
Throughout our history, some Sinhalese Buddhist kings even gave up their thrones and lived in exile to protect the most sacred Buddhist relics, while others became non-Buddhists before declaring war against settler colonists. You cannot deny the legitimate rights of the Sinhalese Buddhist monks and Buddhist laymen to follow the footsteps of their ancestors to further protect their land from extremism, separatism, land encroachment and terrorism.

You are talking about the “British and Indian version” of our Sinhalese Buddhist history which the Sinhalese have rejected decades ago.
India doesn’t have a written history. So, they have to rely on our ancient written history which has no mention of a country called India. Our history was written when ancient Sri Lanka was 12 times bigger than the current size. As mentioned in the travels of Marco Polo, in the 3rd Century B.C., 100,000 port towns, 970 coastal villages and 400 villages inhabited by pearl divers had been submerged.
It is the British who fabricated the history of India. The British concealed India’s history under the Greeks and fabricated a new history for India using its Greco-Buddhist architecture as archaeological evidence.
Our officials in the Archaeology Department as well as University Professors in Archaeology were offered scholarships in India to spread out the Indian version of our history. Some of them are still on India’s payroll.
Now, India is putting its ugly hand in our education system too. Prime Minister Harini who cannot even speak in Sinhala properly has conspired with India to train our school teachers in India to brainwash them.

By the way, I am still waiting for your quote from Baldeus.

Hello Champa,
Marco Polo was writing about his visit in 1291/1292 the 13th Century AD. Ptolemy’s Maps were produced from his writings in 150 AD and some still exist from the 13th Century. Back then they exaggerated the size of Ceylon. There was no loss of 100,000 port towns or villages in Marco Polo’s Book of Travels. He mentions that old maps showed Seilan as being bigger and that “a great part has been carried away by the water” The footnote in my version explains the mistake made by the Ptolemaic Maps. So on which page of Book Three did you find Marco Polo’s words “in the 3rd Century B.C., 100,000 port towns, 970 coastal villages and 400 villages inhabited by pearl divers had been submerged”?
Where is your evidence for Sri Lanka being 12 times bigger than now? Marco Polo compared 2400 miles Circumference to 3600 miles on Ancient Maps. The actual Circumference of Sri Lanka is around 830 miles. Here is Ptolemy’s Map
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ptolemy%27s_Map_of_Taprobane.jpg
Good for the time but not very accurate. By the way I first got an Interest in Sri Lanka (Ceylon) when I read Marco Polo’s Travels (an Abridged Version) at Primary School.

Marco Polo made two visits to “Seilan”, Sri Lanka.
Today, Sri Lanka’s circumference is 830 miles. But, Marco Polo has mentioned that according to the charts of mariners, in ancient times, the circumference was 3600 miles and that the part of the island had been swallowed by the sea. The great floods in the 3rd Century BC which submerged 11/12 of the country was well documented! Marco Polo has even written about the life of Buddha when he visited the “ Land of Buddhism” which is Seilan, Sri Lanka.
I don’t blame you for believing the British version of Sri Lanka’s history which has maliciously removed a good chunk of its true history.

Even under Sirisena, if anyone in the ruling party was summoned to court for an investigation, they were respected. However, the so-called clean-men and women in the NPP don’t care if their men receive court notices. Jagath Manuwarana, an alleged drug addict, is said to be violating court orders today. How come?

The paragraph where you described the fear of Christians is hilarious. As far as I know, Catholic churches sought police protection for fear of attacks from Muslims.
As for politicians, all the mob driven-ethnic riots from 1956 to 2019 were instigated and maintained by the Malabar origin politicians who posed as Sinhalese. As claimed by the masterminds themselves, it was Catholics and Muslims who were behind the 2022 insurrection in Sri Lanka that caused billions of rupees in damages to the government.
In conclusion, I want to place on record that Sinhalese Buddhist monks whom you claimed as “influencers” of the Sinhalese population, never produced terrorists.

As proved by the last few paragraphs, your article is entirely politically driven.
What you have conveniently forgotten is that Tamils, Muslims and anti-Buddhist JVP, the political party which is in power now, took up arms to destroy this country and massacred innocent civilians.
It is not a secret that Muslims and Tamils support the current JVP/NPP tipsy government solely for the latter’s promise to suppress Buddhism, promote LGBTQ+ to destroy traditional Sinhalese Buddhist society and ban Buddhism and Sinhalese History in national school curricula under the guise of educational reforms.
For your information, for over 443 years, European settler colonists who invaded Sinhaladvipa tried to eliminate Buddhism from the country by banning practising Buddhism, setting fires to Buddhist temples along with resident monks, destroying Buddhist temples and building Christian churches on temple lands, assassinating individual Buddhist monks who resisted imperialism and offering money, perks and positions to converters. Nothing worked.
If you think your tipsy government can do what the European settler colonists failed to do for four centuries and deprive the Sinhalese Buddhists who are the majority in this country of their right to religion, you are very much mistaken. It will never happen.

Champa, Buddhists go to some nirvana. Where is that? Can you cancel all the murders, and finally escape judgement. Think again. Supposed to be reborn as another which cannot be recognised as the former. Jesus resurrected as the same person and hence was recognised. Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever. Hebrews 13,8.
/
LankaScot / November 2, 2025
Hello DTG,
Even with my meagre knowledge of Buddhist Teachings, I am aware that Nirvana is not a place, but the cessation of “suffering”. In its final form, which happens thus “when the causes of all future existence have been extinguished and the chain of causation of both physical form and of consciousness have been finally terminated” existence ceases.
So after some or none “rebirths” you end up ceasing to exist. I don’t know if Buddhism has places like Heaven, Hell or Purgatory, however there is no more evidence for these Christian Places than there is for Buddhist Rebirth.
Try explaining the Trinity, Resurrection or Transubstantiation without twisting yourself in knots. God implants himself in Mary and is born as a human, has himself crucified (killed) then resurrects himself and after 40 days ascends to Heaven from the Mount of Olives, promising that that the Holy Spirit would help his followers prepare for his return.
Oh, and by the way the Communion Wafer and Wine are Transubstantiated into the actual body and blood of Christ.

“Nirvana” is not a place. It means that one will not be born again. Nirvana marks the end of one’s birth, death and rebirth cycle. It is not easy to achieve and the time one spends on achieving Nirvana depends on the size of one’s “Karmic debt”. Until one pays off his or her Karmic debt, one will be born again and again and again. The more merits one gathers, the easier and faster the paying his or her Karmic debt.
