Sirasa And Killy Ridiculed, Condemned And Criticized For Manipulating Political Crisis

MTV/MBC Media Network, owned by controversial businessman Killy Rajamahendran, has come under severe pressure on social media for its “unethical and brazenly uncivilized” coverage of the current political crisis in Sri Lanka.

MTV/Sirasa owner Rajamahendran with Mahinda Rajapaksa

Sirasa, the flagship channel of the network, repeatedly aired breaking news, strongly pushing for the removal of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. This attack was carried out in the manner of a hate-campaign, violating all norms, ethics and professional standards adopted by ‘civilized’ media institutions across the world.

Colombo Telegraph learns that all this “drama” is initiated and directed by Rajamahendran who holds a grudge against Prime minister Wickremesinghe for refusing to grant national list MP slots for J. Sri Ranga and Susil Kindelpitiya, two of his close allies who failed to enter Parliament through election.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesighe claimed in public that Rajamahendran attempted to get national list slots for his ex-employees and challenged him to deny the allegation. So far, Rajamahendran, his channel or his allies have failed to respond to this allegation. Instead, they had resorted to a continuous and relentless hate-campaign against Wickremesinghe.

Facebook and Twitter, last night, was flooded with posts criticizing and condemning ‘Sirasa’ and its owner Rajamahendran’s agenda.

When a group of UNP MPs visited Temple Trees yesterday for a discussion with Prime Minister Wickremesinghe, Sirasa rushed a television crew to broadcast live what they suggested was the imminent fall of the Prime Minister.

The group of MPs walked out of the meeting, smiling, and pledged full support to the Prime Minister, causing great embarrassment to Sirasa. When one TV crew member asked an MP about the ‘fate’ of the Prime Minister, the latter quipped, “Ah eka Sirasen thorala apita kiyayi” (Sirasa will decide that and let us know).

Rajamahendran, who now appears to be a champion of democracy, was a man who manly bowed down to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and pandered to the previous government’s political agenda.

A leaked “CONFIDENTIAL” US diplomatic cable, dated March 22, 2007, updated the Secretary of State on Sri Lanka’s media suppression situation shows that President Mahinda Rajapaksa managed to influence the owner of the Majaraja Broadcasting Company. The Colombo Telegraph found the related leaked cable from the WikiLeaks database. The cable was written by the Ambassador Robert O. Blake.

Ambassador Blake wrote “Television stations have also been feeling the heat. This matters, because about 60% of the population gets its news for TV. Television journalists tell us, however, that the Majaraja Broadcasting Company, owned by a prominent Tamil, had been the only broadcaster covering press conferences critical of the government by former Foreign Minister Samaraweera, as well as stories on human rights violations and abductions. However, a senior executive of the Maharaja channel (protect) told us that President Rajapaksa had summoned the owner of the station to Temple Trees (equivalent to the White House). During a cordial chat, Rajapaksa was able to persuade Maharajah not to air any more programs on such sensitive topics.”

Mahinda Rajapakshe is a very good actor/humbug. Even though he is genuinely not patriotic/nationalist (we have seen how he, his close relatives and his cohorts abused the country’s wealth), he knows very well how to act like one (very crooked). He is also known as the people’s president/leader because he knows the art of fooling the masses (carrying the children, extending both hands to appease the old people, etc.), he is extremely good at acting like a real father of the nation and an expert in hoodwinking not only the masses but to all those whom he gives promises (false promises). He is a double tonged leader who can never be trusted.

On the other hand, Ranil Wickramasinghe is straight forward (not an actor) and does not know anything about public relations or rather, he does not know how to fool the masses. Even on a stage, he will wear his western attire and sit with the legs crossed (don’t care type) showing disrespect to the public (not intentionally). He may be cunning at politics but he does not know how to appease/attract the people. Even after losing around 30 odd times, Ranil has never learned how to hoodwink the masses. UNP desperately needs not only cunning but also a crooked leader who knows how to be a good actor in front of the masses (an expert in fooling the masses), an expert in playing to the gallery.

        Srilal,
Who regulates Media Mafia in SL? I have no idea. If U know, please educate us. Unless we regulate media criminality in a transparent manner, we can forget about a new Sri Lanka. Cheers!

          Ben ,

Well , RW had tried to introduce a new media guidelines and ethics bill through the parliament , guess what , this same Sirasa Gutter news channel vehemently opposed the idea , i think Wijedasa Rajapkse pulled it down accordingly.

I’ve been advocating against this gutter news channel for a long time , at last now people seem to be getting the true face of this 3rd rated channel. Sirasa wants to brainwash SL masses according to their ideology , what a channel ? Sirasa has clearly overstepped its designated media role ;furthermore, they have blatantly violated all the media ethics and regulations , siras’s license must be revoked , period !

Srilal, my brother how are you? Long time no see, I am so fed up of lanken politics.

They did pave the way stupid people to return. Today killers are praised while the others have been attacked.

Where have we been marching to?

I think Average punnakku eaters would never see it right. So long Kili sakkiliya would be the raja of Media srilanka, nothing will change to the facts and figures of this nation.

Greetings from Sunny but cold, Germany

          Dear Sirimal ,

Yes, i’ve been out of CT comment section for while , but it seems time is ripe to engage in politics again . Our mafia king appears to be raising his ugly head again along with his criminal gang, Sirasa wants RW out at any cost;thus, they spread negative news about him and the Good governance simultaneously . last night they thought , they could expel him from UNP as well as premiership , so they went extra mile by airing a special segment under the heading of “Breaking News ” furthermore, they desperately wanted to provoke the UNP supporters so that they would surround the “sirikotha ” ;conversely , no body gave a hoot about Sirasa’s plea, Alas , after today’s President’s announcement they seem to hold the onslaught against RW. My suggestion is Sirasa must be made to accountable for Public , they always getaway with any thing by hiding behind the media freedom slogan..Sirasa’s license must be revoked temporarily , period !

            Hi Srilal,

what are the laws we have in the country in terms of Sirasa s licence being revoked ?
Alone this statement can go viral ” RW makes effort to censor media” etc can even end up falling even deeper.

We know there are limitations within the provision of laws, also in UK and Germany for media institutions, even if they call it ” media freedom”: Lanken media experts should work with them and tame Sirasa, Hiru and Derana. All three have abused the freedom as bad soldiers were given weapons.

Can anybody of you please add the provisions of law in terms of media freedom in the country please ?
I thoroughly believe, media prostitutes destroyed almost everything that good governance govt made effort to implement in the country.

Fake news and alternative facts is what Bond scam Ranil and his foreign handlers dish out to the public of Lanka.
Bottom line, is Ranil must go!
Whether Maharaja or Sirasa wants RW gone is IRRELEVANT. RW and MR need to be put in the same prison Cell.
CT get a grip! Are you DRUNK or jealous of Sirasa and News First who actually do some real investigative journalism and political analysis!
Seems that CT is in the pay of RW and his western handlers including Blake Pala!

Yes, Ben, President should have not passed them those frequequencies as is the case.

Sirasa only spoke about Bank scam, but not a single word added against Rajapakse thakkadiyas.

Today, the thakkadiyas won the price as if the test is failed by the decent people.

I think this country Media Mafia to be blamed for fooling the nation. Every second, ballige puthas attacked RW sometimes for no reason.

      Really?
Have we to depend on leaked US diplomatic cables to find out what our politicians are up to.
      Are we that dense?
      No.
If we are politically sensitive enough and keep our ears and eye sharp enough we can surely understand what our politicians are up to.

        Uthungan

“If we are politically sensitive enough and keep our ears and eye sharp enough we can surely understand what our politicians are up to.”

        Are you being serious?
If the people were politically sensitive enough and had they kept their ears and eye sharp enough we would not have had several riots, war crimes committed in 1971, 1987-1990, over 30 years, destruction of the environment, and 70 years of self-destruction.

I reluctantly disagree with your assertion.
I am ready to deport all those kallathonies back to their ancestral motherland, South India.

Some regulations for misusing TV channels is a must.

    MTV s broadcasts were disgusting.
It had been openly anti Ranil and encourages extremists in the north.
Sajith Premadasa is there every day on the news. In case he becomes the leader of UNP and by chance either President or PM , the real president or PM will be MTV owner..

Ranil has to go but not now after seeing what MTV is doing.

It does not practice any ethics or national responsibility.

Another Channel misleads the viewers . A recent case was that of the UK Army Officers incident.
Derana channel showed the officer speaking on the Indian fisherman demonstration for this incident.

News of all private channels are nothing but gutter politics. According to them nothing good happens in the country. Its all one of criticism.

Sad to see TV channels in the country .

    Ratna R

What we have in the country is freedom of the wild ass. Its a long long way to see proper journalism.

It should not be permitted to continue like this.

    • 5
      0

Ratna R, excellent observation Sajith seems to be a candidate this Maharajah man feels he can manipulate! (Sajith probably is unaware of this)

And Derana is trying to manipulate reality to protect our deplomat!
Pleases Learn to “call a spade a spade” protect the innocent but not the guilty not the other way!
If you protect the guilty soon you will be ruled by the guilty and the worst criminals…

These actions by the two media outlets you mentioned is irresponsible journalism at its best!

But the average Sri Lankan who is ruled by his emotional impulses won’t see through these manipulations and end up bringing back the fascist dictatorship of the Rajapaksas…

Country first before any of your agendas please. media has a responsibility and if you don’t act with responsible we will be back under the Rajapaksas…

Actually, the Premier should be grateful to this particular TV station who went out of their way to considerably boost the sagging vote-base and the anti- Premier sentiment that prevailed just a few days ago.

They went so much over the top in vilifying the Prime Minister, the ploy backfired, with the softening of the anti-Ranil sentiment and hardening of the anti-TV Station sentiment. I know many, who have watched that particular TV station for the last time. And they aren’t hard-liner UNPers at all. They found it all very sickening. Nobody kicks an already wounded dog.

Many apolitical persons welcomed the results merely because Ranil would now be forced to act instead of vacillating (at which he excelled). Ranil who is known to possess a lot of grey matter between his ears, would also have learnt many hard truths as to whom he could trust from his own camp, who are the turn-coats and what to expect if MR is given a mere whiff.

As for the newscasts, they were anything but “We Report, You Decide”. Instead they bullied the listener with a lot of verbiage, which in the end seemed nothing more than an impressive extension of their own colourful imaginations.

Ranil has been warned by the electorate. It would be very unwise, if he were to repeat the lapses ever again.

Sirasa /MTV/TV1 are all having very low ratings now. They were very one-sided during the Pre Election period and all the Guns were pointed at Ranil. The reasons given by most people in the country dead right. That fouled mouthed Sri Ranga who does not know anything about the 19th Amendment was cut to Ribbons by Prof: Soyza from Peradeniya University. These fellows should not be recognized by anybody. There were People like Gayan , Watawala , Senanayake and Siripala who are paid by Killy to Attack Ranil . They will be discarded by the Media & the people of the country very soon

      Dear Percy,

You are right. This is the freedom of the Press and it leaves us with a choice of deciding what to TRUST and LISTEN/READ and what to leave well alone.

There was only one problem. It was pathetically disgusting. I think the country deserves better.

Swarm Behaviour in Politics: I am sure everyone has seen in reality or in movies how a densely packed group of animals, such as birds or fish, move in large groups at very high speed in a swarm. Wikepedia describes swarm behaviour as the collective motion of a large number of self-propelled entities. Even humans sometimes exhibit swarm behaviour and Mathematical software such as Matlab have the capacity to simulate swarm behaviour and even study how voters vote in an election like the last one.
Some of the surprising things about swarm behaviour are that (1) there is no apparent leader (2) There are no collisions (3) There are a few simple rules that control the group (4) each entity is trying to follow what it’s neighbor does.
3 wheeler Taxi stands provide an excellent scenario for studying swarm behaviour. While the Mallis wait for customers, they communicate with each other with ease as the 3 wheelers have fully open bodies. While talking to each other, they form and reform their opinions continuously and unconsciously, without any leader guiding them. This is typical swarm behavior. Those opinions are then communicated to their customers while on the move. Almost all 3 wheeler Mallis that I have used start talking about politics as soon as the ride starts and continue till the end. This way the swarm behavior is extended to geographically isolated swarms.
It is a worthwhile area to study and ample software is available to do just that for anyone interested to do so.

Killy Mahendran’s son’s father-in-law was personally appointed to the takeover Sri Lankan Airlines when Rajapakshe brother-in-law was removed in January, 2015.
Being a close confidante of Ranil Wickremasinghe, this person still serves in Director Board of Sri Lankan.

Therefore there is no truth in this news article Killy Rajamahendran punishing Ranil.
MR may have influenced but the fact remains Killy.R ‘s direct channels to Ranil yet remain intact.

Honestly I do not care for any politician who have openly failed the people ,we have been constantly set up against each other for the psst seventy years and. When we were young our rights and resources were robbed and now of our children and grandchildren ,they can all rot I care less

But I assure you time is not far away when one day the people are going to look into the mirror and realise how they have been taken for a ride for so many years .

And when that happens ,no religion ,no race is going to matter ,people together will do to such politicians exactly what they did to Ghadafi .may be even worse.
Lincoln ,said it correctly when he said , you can not fool all the people all the time … Remember who toppled the Berlin Wall , Politicians thought they can keep The people of one country divided forever by a wall ,they were pathetically mistaken, then the Soviets Union ,remember its the people who toppled them all , do not underestimated the power of the people , ,,,

Let us be more objective. Media does play a role but that does not mean that they have the absolute clout in making or breaking Governments, like some time back. People have a mind of their own. Up to now no voter has ever claimed that he/she was influenced by a media institution. We have to respect the thinking capabilities of the people and let us not demean it. Clearly good amount of chaps who voted for the swan on Jan 8, 2015 crossed the flower bud in Feb 2018. If we try to find an answer to that we are somewhere close to reality.

It seems, CT wants to brand Sirasa as a MR proxy! Hence the attached MR-Killy picture. No way. Sirasa never has been a pro-Rajapakshe network. Once they were promoting Sajith Prema. Then choose Anura Kumara as its crown prince. At present, Sirasa has selected Maithree as its favorite. During the war, Sirasa was soft peddling LTTE. In 2010 it was running behind Sarath Fon. Since its inception, Sirasa has been a curse to Sri Lanka, politically, culturally and socially.

Sirasa is just another media institute, it’s not sacred to people. As far as their broadcasts found ethical, people will trust & respect them.

But if Sirasa is being blamed to mask RW’s failure/weaknesses/being corrupt etc..; it’s sad development.

A majority, including vast number UNPers are of the view that RW isn’t perfect leader for Sri Lanka. It’s not Sirasa created idea, it’s the impression RW has made to his electorate.

Even the president made a direct/indirect verbal attack upon the PM prior to the LG elections.

People expect the president to continue his keenness on presidential commission report on CB bond scam.

One of the reasons why the election defeat was experienced by the Yahapalana Govt is the MEDIA. Although media freedom has been given after Yahapalana Govt took over, the media and the voters have not clearly understood what Media Freedom means. Media, especially the TV and Print media are working not for the benefit of the viewers and readers but for the benefit of the owners of the media. These institutions are promoting lies told and written by various politicians without any fact checking. To this extent these institutions are conduits for spreading false information. If the President is serious he should immediately make it compulsory, especially during TV political debates an independent group of Fact Checkers to be present. Only then the truth will be told and the false lies will be fact checked. Will the President do it?

I deeply regret the doing away of the preferential vote ,it gave some opportunity for the he people to award recognition to those who deserve it .

The constitution that we have been hanging on and amending is like the old saying treating an old wound with no result of healing

I strongly believe the vote for the party should be replaced by vote for the best Candidate of the party ,and set a minimum required number of votes to be elected to Parliament ,whoever gets less gets elected to the local authorities of cause again with a required number of votes .

We do not need an opposition ,no thank you , no more white elephants ,they are more expensive to maintain than green elephants or oil the palm. .

We should have the Senate completely neutral members carefully elected by the people, which they can do at the same election ,the Election commissioner can short list the members ,so they can hold the government completely accountable and must have the power to over rule or even stop any decisions that are harmful to the country and people .
