Sirasa Network Under Fire Again: Nandasena Vows He Knows ‘How To Teach Media A Lesson’

President Nandasena Gotabaya Rajapaksa fired salvos at Capital Maharaja Group Chairman Kili Rajamahendran (Maharaja) and dissident media on Friday (20) warning that he knew how to “teach them a lesson if necessary”.

In his latest instalment of ගම සමග පිළිසඳර (Conversation with the village) in Walpane on Friday, the President revealed parts of his old self, his voice growing shriller as he issued dire warnings to media personnel and organizations he said were hell bent on destroying his government.

Issuing a clear broadside against Rajamahendran, President Rajapaksa claimed that some media proprietors were trying to control governments and the rulers.

“There are no kings in our country and no Maharajas. These mafias want to control governments and rulers. That’s not going to work with me. If necessary, I know how to teach them a lesson,” the Head of State threatened to a smattering of applause from the crowd.

“During 14 months of rule, I have never exerted any pressure on any media institution. But if they try to abuse (media freedom) there are laws to deal with that. There are ways to do it and I will execute those methods,” President Rajapaksa charged.

The attack on Capital Maharaja group and its chairman was particularly chilling because the Sirasa Network was repeatedly targeted when the Rajapaksa government was last in power from 2005-2015. The worst attack took place on 6th January 2009 when Sirasa’s state of the art studio in Depanama Pannipitiya was torched by a group of 20 armed men. Investigators discovered that the attackers had also attempted to explode a claymore mine inside the studio which would have caused the loss of life. The attack on the Sirasa studio followed months of public threats against the network by then Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa and his Ministry of Defence accusing the broadcaster of being pro-LTTE. In a televised interview on ITN three months after the attack on the network, Defence Secretary Rajapaksa accused Sirasa of setting its own studio on fire to bring the government into disrepute and fraudulently claim insurance for equipment. In the same tv appearance, Gotabaya Rajapaksa accused Sirasa of being ‘the voice of the Tigers’. [“සිරස තමයි කොටි හඬ – Watch 2009 interview:

Three days after the attack on Sirasa, Sunday Leader Editor Lasantha Wickrematunge was murdered on his way to work. Wickrematunge’s last public appearance was at the Sirasa studios at dawn on January 6, 2009 hours after attack. Wickrematunge called the attack an ‘act of terrorism’.

During his conversation with the village at Walpane on Friday it was apparent that the President was furious that his Government was being accused of providing patronage to those who were destroying the environment. He called reports that there was mass scale deforestation taking place all over the country “fake news”. Even media organizations faithful to his government who had bought into the “jathika chinthana” or national thought” was accusing his government of felling trees, he complained bitterly.

There teams of media saboteurs even inside these friendly organizations, he claimed.

“Even the media that is in line with the “jathika chinthanaya” (national thought) spreads false propaganda that Kumbuk trees have been cut down. I looked into this. Inside these organizations there are media personnel who worked against us when we were fighting the war. The same people are involved in this (fake news about environmental destruction) again. Teams have crept in (to these institutions) to publicize these things. The same groups that worked against the war effort have now resurfaced,” the President said.

“All this is false propaganda to deceive the people. Don’t be fooled by it. When a government that loves the country, loves our culture, protects our identity, preserves our indigenousness, protects our religion and has these policies, they will work to attack and destroy them,” he urged.

Translation:

Media freedom does not mean the freedom of the person who owns the media institution. If the owners of media institutions try to run the country as they want, then that is a mafia. That’s what happens. In our country there are no kings and no Maharajas. The Maharajas were in India. These mafias want to control governments and rulers. That’s not going to work with me. If necessary, I know how to teach them a lesson.

During 14 months of rule, I have never exerted any pressure on any media institution. But if they try to abuse (media freedom) there are laws to deal with that. There are ways to do it and I will execute those methods.

It is not only them (Maharaja). Even the media that is inline with the “jathika chinthanaya” (national thought) spreads false propaganda that

Kumbuk trees have been cut down. I looked into this. Inside these organisations there are media personnel who worked against us when we were fighting the war. The same people are involved in this (fake news about environmental destruction) again. Teams have crept in (to “jathika chinthana” media institutions) to publicise these things. [Addresses monks] When you see all this, you know this is what is coming Hamuduruwane. The same groups that worked against the war effort have now resurfaced.

[Reads out detailed list about deforestation from 2015-2019]

These people never saw all that because at that time they had the government they wanted in power. It is as if all this time there was nothing and as soon as I came (to power) deforestation began. All this is false propaganda to deceive the people. Don’t be fooled by it. When a government that loves the country, loves our culture, protects our identity, preserves our indigenousness, protects our religion and has these policies, they will work to attack and destroy them. We have to be careful of these moves.

      Who created BBS ?
      .
Who empowered SAHARAN who was the mastermind of easter sunday disaster ?
      .
Who if not ADHA DERANA and HIRU TV misled the nation by spread blant lies about NAGA- BROUGHT- RELICS for their come back ? Was that not fake news ?
      .
Who twisted the mindset of poor gawky majority by introducing PANIYA as a redherring to your incapabilities in containment of the virus from its rapid spread ?
      .
Who looted the state so that nothing remained by the time 2015 govt came into being ? Was not that your BROTHER et al, who made srilankens eternal debtors to china. ? But the bugger generations became untouchably weathier thanks to discounts… was that not similar to RED LIGHT AREA business that you were alleged to have gone through during your Refuge in the CA ( 1989 to 2005) ?

        Leela,

“Who empowered SAHARAN who was the mastermind of easter sunday disaster ?”

That was your friend Traitor Ranil, who ignored multiple intelligence warnings. Moda Siri government was giving land in the East to Muslim ministers as bribes. This land was being used to build radical mosques and train extremists.

“Who looted the state so that nothing remained by the time 2015 govt came into being ?”

Something was remaining, otherwise Traitor Ranil could not have taken advantage of the bond scam.

        “Who created BBS ?”

BBS was correct. Not the human rights champions and Hiru TV.

          Lester,

I must not waste my precious time for an ultra stupid thakkadiyo of your nature. You have been supporting mlechcha Rajapkashes knowing their CIRMINAL energies. That hurts everyone more today.

Please get YOUR facts right and learn to open eyes let alone today. SAHARAN was paid abusing tax payers funds so as ballige puthas destroy SINHALARAYA today. But telling the palatable to you the gallery because they know that you are born stupid.
We perfectly know if there were not MEDIA mafia, return of RAJAPAKSE CRIMINALS would have been a miracle.
          :
I dont agree 100% with Ranil but I respect him as aleader, I also respect more CBK and her politics. I respect decent politicians but never UNCULTURED; RASCALS BORN to medamulan animal kingdom.
          .
Anyways, we clear that you the kind of idiots are the majority in that god punished island, and Rajapakshes reaped the harvest on you. You would never see it right, even if you are fed with all the facts.

That we call – CONDITIONED MIND SET. Even little children would learn it quickly, because they today would care much about their parents, knowing srilanken parents in general beyond sanity.
          .
I sometimes, question myself, why people fall that deep on and on.. is that because so called BUDDHGAMA which exists within srilanken bounderies ?

            0

In srilanka, most of them are born in to so called buddhist families. Mine was not exception, but how many of them respect today ” FIVE PRECEPTS “. Those who tattoo them being SINHALA buddhists are the RAJAPAKSHES. they wear PIRITHNOOLE AND NAWAGUNAWAELA also around their penises as that ROYAL astrologer once exposed about Mahinda and his thakkadyo bunch.
            :
As for me, those who continue their abuses their heart feelings, let them fallen all known and unknown gods again and again. They know very well, how abusive their and that they would not be forgiven by unknown gods. People like me I dont need to go after anyone because I have contributed to evils/sinns to the manner many of Rajapkashes and their supporters so far.
I would never wear anything AROUND our wrists or anywhere else, so has my mother ever in her life. Today having understood, about srilanken pinguthtahraya, I have fully stopped offering them FREE FOOD. I instead feed my stray dogs and other animals not forgetting my contribution to the ELDERLY people who are really in need.

anyways, we are clear that you the kind of idiots are the majority in that god punished island, and Rajapakshes reaped the harvest on you. You would never see it right, even if you are fed with all the facts.

No President Nandasena is not loosing. Nandasena has also sent a threat warning to UNHRC. Even if necessary the same threat will go towards Mahanayaka’s try to advise him.
He might win even UNHRC vote by selling the country to China, Russia, Pakistan and buying corrupted murderous regimes like Myanmar etc. But Sri Lanka is loosing!. Buddhism is loosing! People of Sri Lanka loosing! Civilisation is loosing! Economy is loosing!

Good question. It is hard to understand how people in this country, who knew this man, what he is capable of, the violence against journalists, the corruption, racism, the abuse of powers, and even the fact that he had ties to the US, could vote for a scoundrel like this. Clean streets does not mean clean government. He was unpopular before the Easter bombings, and it worked to his advantage, when these terrorist attacks happened. There are none so blind as those that will not see.

When there is nationalism, racism, and corruption, the economy suffers. When those saffron robed thugs have a loud voice in the government, urges the government to implement racist policies, and divide the country, the country never progresses.
This is what is happening to this country.

69 lakhs who voted for this bugger knew very well what he is capable of. That is why they elected him as the President. No wonder Demala and Muslim politicians who bragged that they are the ‘King Makers’ are highly disappointed.

Demalu who are suffering from ‘Defeat-Syndrome’ think UNHRC Resolution will be like an atom bomb that will destroy Sinhale/Sri Lanka. For Sinhalayo who prevailed facing the threat from Tamil terrorists who massacred Sinhalayo for three decades using suicide bombers, claymore bombs, multi-barrel guns and chemical weapons, the UNHRC Resolution is nothing.

The voters who place a government in power are as fickle as a flirt.
Look at what the large majority that put the ultra rightist Mauricio Marci in power in Argentina in 2015. It reversed its verdict in 2019, despite powerful backing from the US.
Look at Brazil. The neofascist Jair Bolsonaro who won with a massive majority in 2018 had his approval rating slump to 32.9% in February2021 from 41.2% in October 2020. With Lula Da Silva released from prison by Supreme Court order, things are getting worse for Bolsonaro.

      Easton Scott, unfortunately this bugger and his entire mafia family keep selling the crushing of the LTTE and the international community bullying SL story to the uneducated masses of this counrty. When the international community is after these war criminals, they twist this story as follows;

The international community is bullying SL. They keep threatening us with sanctions. See what they are doing to this small island.

But the international community is not after the country but they are after the criminals who had a major part in the killing fields of SL who massacred innocent civilians. The sanctions are targeted sanctions specific only to war criminals.

Now watch, some gamarala buggers will come and tell me that I am an LTTE supporter, I am upset because of the LTTE was crushed……………but they will never touch on the topic of the high command of the LTTE working with Ali Baba and his 40 thieves (The Rajapaksas).

Gone were the days, people had forgotten about ” how andhare ate sugar”: This criminal’s total ingnorance costed state over 16 billions (1600 millions). All these are not their own family assets. This guy cut his neck by his own. His near future is darker than it is appeared to be. If he believes how to silence media, people would also be much more powerful to act against him and his criminals sooner than later.

President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa is the sole culprit for the unprecedented spate of wanton deforestation in Sri Lanka since 2020. Therefore, his denial is a joke..
The “ecocide-friendly” Circular No. 1/2020 issued by Gotabhaya cancelling Circular Nos. 5/2001 & 2/2006 that protected Other-State-Forests is the prime reason for the current environmental destruction of forests in Sri Lanka.
Through this senseless new circular, Gotabhaya arbitrarily removed the authority of the Department of Forest Conservation on Other-State-Forests endangering nearly 700,000 otherwise protected forests and their wildlife. The clear reason for issuing a new circular in 2020 is to remove all barriers for his kith & kin, friends and political supporters to clear the forest.
Given the vast amount and the diversity of reserved forests in Sri Lanka, demarcating and surveying reserve forest boundaries is NOT the solution for this wanton deforestation. On one hand, it is time consuming, costly and lengthy. On the other hand, we cannot trust Gotabhaya to carry out such a sensitive major task in an efficient, effective and transparent manner.
The easiest way to stop this massive deforestation is to REPEAL the new Circular No. 01/2020 and RE-ENACT Circular Nos. 5/2001 & 2/2006. End of the story!
How long will it take? Only half an hour. Cheers!!!

“He Knows ‘How To Teach Media A Lesson” Sure he does!

He taught ‘the lesson’ to thousands of young Sinhalese suspected of being JVP cadres – made them disappear without trace.

He taught the lesson to dozens of Tamil media people and some Sinhalese media people – they are never seen alive again.

He taught the lesson to more than hundred thousand innocent Tamils, raping them, committing genocide, and his favorite past time – making the surrendered Tamils disappear.

Now he has vowed to teach his proverbial lesson to the media people who don’t tow his line: This time to make it more scary he has started sending black vans – like Black Maria – for his opponents.

He is going to teach a lesson to the UNHRC. I wonder what mode of teaching he will choose?

May be it’s time for the global community to teach him the lesson, and that is for him to learn and take it to his grave!

NGR is showing his true colours. He has not changed a wee bit after becoming the President. He still likes to get into the boots of a Defence Secretary that he has been preserving for nearly two decades. He has NOT been able to wear the Presidential boots as he doesn’t have the ABILITIES of a TRUE/ able /dependable/Charismatic of a Leader.
He could surround himself with REALLY SOUND ADVISERS to do the right things for the country and get it out of being a PARIAH STATE

Naman: “He could surround himself with REALLY SOUND ADVISORS……” Do you think this man “GR” can do that? You perhaps heard the story of two parrots, one brought up in the house of a SAINTLY man and another in a ROUGE’s. The parrot in the house of the saintly man was well behaved, cultured while the other in the rouges was equal to the qualities of the master. Where do you think this “GR” would have been brought up judging by the “QUALITY” of life he displays? Look at the “Really Sound Advisors” he has got around him? He has a “Council of Buddhist Clergy” to advise him and who are they? Then comes, the “Cortier” of retired “Army” personnel placed at various strategical positions in the administration. Next, his close association with another group of “Business Mafia”. With all these and many more “GR” is an utter “MISFIT” to “Lead” but “LED” by a group of his “EQUALS”.

Burt: This time it is not going to be “Whit Van” but a completely “Different”. You heard him: “There are no Maharajas. Maharaja’s cannot be allowed to run the country. The Media is not Media Owners”. Got the message?

When the president passionately but blindly talks of “our culture, our identity, our indigenousness, and our religion” it is obvious that as far as he is concerned there is only “one culture, one identity, one indigenousness, and one religion” in this country. It is clear that pluralism and human diversity are alien concepts to him. No wonder he can only hold meetings and address in Sinhala the rural folk living in remote villages. That is all his level of education will allow. He shies away from holding meetings in the cities, talking to the intelligentsia, and fielding pointed questions.

It is non other than his elder brother Mahinda and himself imagine like Kings.. nobody else…

If not why GR chosen Ruwanwelisaya precincts in the ancient north central town of Anuradhapura for his swearing ceremony. It is his elder brother Mahinda used the media to portray himself as a King .. remember the song played after the election ….

Don’t be so stupid and blindly support in the name of hate speech and advocacy of your own imagination as one that of greater public. The 69 lacks are mainly frustration of the previous govt and not in love with R family.

I would like to ask the President a simple question. Is de-forestation happening or not? If not, how much of forest land have been lost since he took over due to ‘development’ in the form of cultivation & tourist lodges?
We have parliamentarians who believe food is more important than oxygen, quality of air is immaterial, water resources are infinitely abundant & wild animals are better off being domesticated as pets or displayed for the benefit of tourists. A young girl who publicly made her concerns about the environment has been visited by the police & even investigated. Was her crime voicing ‘fake news’? First it was the political critics & the critical media who faced the wrath but now is it average citizens, including, the younger generation who are concerned about the environment & their future that are facing the wrath of the regime?

I personally do not think the statements Gotabaya supposed to have made against Kili Rajamahendran are chilling. You must know Gotabaya would have been very bitter. Any self-respecting person would have told the same thing. Anyone can imagine if a similar thing happens to him what would he would have told. The statement itself does not implicate anything but only expresses one’s anger. It is the subsequent follow-up action by Gotabaya and that only can implicate him.

On, seeing and listening to the President’s speech (aired over TV), my village people described this type of behavior in strong but in simple style: “Kakuluwa Haliye Diya Rathwenakan Diya Keliye Yedei” (The crab will play until the water in the pot starts boiling). Another, “Gnanadasa”, who did not attend school said: “Maluwa Nahinne Kata Hinda” (The fish dies because of the mouth). “Baby Amma” (one among 6.9 million) said: “Oya Marenna Kittuwa Yana Gee Kiyanawa” ( These are songs of a dying person) Another, Loku Appuhamy said: ” Me Wage Wal Parayanta Apith Chande Dunna Ne” (We gave our vote to these bastards). Somawathie Akka said: “Habetama Moota Aba Etayaka Tharam Moloyak Kiyala Deyak Nedda” (Actually hasn’t he got a brain of a mustard seed). I was listening to all that talk and remained silent. Then, Loku Appuhamy turning to me asked: ” Mahattaya Kata Wahagena Inne Pandama Allanda” ( Are you silent, to hold a candle). While the discussion was going on, I was, with great difficulty holding on to a “Fart”. I looked at Loku Appuhamy and released my “FART” so loudly and got up from the bench to leave. I noticed all of them holding on to their noses in disgust of the foul smell. That was the “TV” discussion we held.

This outburst is child’s play, and I expected a stealthy implementation instead of a threat/warning. I have commented in more than one occasion that the main candidates of the Presidential race have one thing in common, namely, cannot tolerate a different point of view. If anyone of them got elected they would have given the “works” to the “recalcitrant” fourth estate. In the same video of “clinching the fists” it was mentioned that some of the deforestation pictured, is a scene that is out of the country. It is also noted as per talk shows in social media that the target of this outburst too is not viewed sympathetically as well. My friends in the Telecommunication sector tell me that the concessions obtained by some media giants from President Sirisena may now be “probed” and withdrawn as a first mild step. Having started that even internet based fourth estate too would be under heavy “scrutiny” as a Sri Lankan born Singaporean Professor (Mahendiran repeated!) is due to take a high position in the Defense Ministry shortly who advocates a strict “monitoring” of the net to “prevent terrorism” in the Singaporean style. God bless CT.

This nit wit has never considered climate change. He thinks he can get the economy going by letting his cronies rob state land and build hotels, chalets etc.while others just pillage the sand, stone and timber. This is his idea of success. The wild life has nowhere to go. There are monkeys , peacocks and even elephants wandering around urbane areas. This nit wit has no concept about the fact that we are in the sixth mass extinction and that what he is doing is accelerating the slaughter of our wild life or whats left of it for starters. If he and his pea brained moronic, greedy investors think they can rake in dinero by building hotels in sanctuaries for wild life then lie about it. You have your heads stuck up your own you know whats you donkeys. The pandemic which you don’t seem to have grasped the consequences of even now has changed global travel for starters. Almost all the experts predict that things will NEVER go back to what they used to be

  • 8
    1

    Contd…
So the destruction of the environment to build more hotels when the existing ones are shut down or struggling to survive beggars belief. Just what on earth do these idiots think they can achieve? This reminds me of the dumb Sinhalese herd mentality. When one fellow opens a shop and is succesfull then every other bugger also opens a shop until there are too many shops and all of them go bankrupt. They saw that for a brief time the Hotel industry was doing well under the previous government until Herr Gotler decided to grab power by setting off the Easter Sundey carnage. But ignoring the pandemic his supporters have caught on to this insane idea that building hotels in wild life sanctuaries is the way to make money. Earth to Moronic Sri Lanka you are playing with fire. Being in the tropics you are on the front lines of extinction and yet you don’t have a god damn clue.

While I very much resent the attitude of GR towards dissent and dissenting media, I concede that he is absolutely right in one matter:
“President Rajapaksa claimed that some media proprietors were trying to control governments and the rulers.”
    *
Not long ago several had commented on these pages highly critically of the conduct of Sirasa-MTV-Shakthi.
We cannot forget what we saw on their screens before and after they fell out with RW.
Can we forget how they tried to personally humiliate Mangala Samaraweera and several others.
Are their screens not advertising billboards for someone they want us to have for president?
    *
In fairness to RW, during his short spell in power the state media had somewhat fair room for dissenting opinion.
    *
GR also said elsewhere that the freedom of the press is practiced as freedom for the owners and not for the public.
I agree, and the public should urge him to put it right first in the state media and then elsewhere.

    • 1

      Dear SJ,
If it’s libellous/defamatory misinformation that’s a concern to the government, then it can use the existing laws to prosecute the perpetrators.

The thought that media proprietors (and hence essentially the media) have to be controlled by enacting additional laws to preempt misinformation/ propaganda will only result in far-reaching extreme censorship processes.

In the context that certain media proprietors are waging anti-government propaganda and are successfully influencing public opinion using misinformation/lies, shouldn’t we put some responsibility on the public to discern the truth before making-up their minds?
When we can’t even trust our elected representatives to be honest and not rob us, we shouldn’t readily trust the media.

Any media or government or party can paint unflattering pictures of their adversary using even factual information which conversely the adversary’s friends can use for weaving a flattering picture!

Gotabaya Rajapaksa should stop whining and uttering threats; use the existing laws, and not push for draconian, fascist laws that will serve him favourably.

The bugger wasn’t complaining about about pro-SLLP/pro-Rajapaksa/pro-government propaganda by other media proprietors! Has he forgotten Derana’s media moghul owner Dilith Jayaweera working on his presidential election campaign!?

I trust that you read my first paragraph which sums up my position.
I merely sought to remind people of their short memory.
There was no defence of GR therein, but a clear call to challenge him.
        *
What I see here is once again a load of senseless emotive abuse that obliterates important facts and meaningful discussion on what can be done.

          SJ,
I read the last paragraph too in which you said that the people should urge Gotabaya to “put it right first in the state media and then elsewhere.”

How do you propose he put it right elsewhere? Using the existing laws?

My point was that this shouldn’t pave the way for draconian laws to be enacted. That was the point of discussion.

The intention wasn’t to evoke your usual senseless emotive abuse directed at commentors here when they lament over the abuses of the state or make anti-China statements.

“The intention wasn’t to evoke your usual senseless emotive abuse…”
Have I abused anyone, let alone usually and emotively for expressing a view?
I do have a good laugh at some abusers, and for long ignored others who keep parroting not very clever phrases.
It is a pity that you seem unable to retort without recourse to personal insult.
            *
I will stick to what I said.
My last sentence was a call to people to use GR’s words against his conduct of state media affairs.
If you still cannot understand it, I give up, as there is not much point in explaining it further.

        Sugandh,
In the UK there is OFCOM, which enforces balance in the media. It acts on complaints and enforces corrections. Imperfect, but workable. But I doubt anything like that will work in SL, where independent commissions are made toothless by the voters themselves.

      S.J,
“GR also said elsewhere that the freedom of the press is practiced as freedom for the owners and not for the public”
Yes, quite true. The Sirasa network is quite shameless in its Premadasa promotion among other things, and uses selective “facts” in its vendettas against those whom it doesn’t like. So it’s very difficult to tell if the issues they raise are genuine or not.
The State media nowadays is even worse. The other day ITN had a list (with pictures) of what it called anti-national supporters of the Geneva resolution. Some of them write on CT.
