President Maithripala Sirisena appointed a new state minister and two deputy ministers this morning, increasing the total number of ministers and deputy ministers to 92.
Accordingly, UPFA MP Lakshman Seneviratne was sworn in as the state minister of science, technology and research, while UPFA MP Manusha Nanayakkara was appointed as the deputy minister of foreign employment and UNP MP Palitha Thewarapperuma was appointed as the deputy minister of internal affairs, Wayamba development and cultural affairs.
With the new appointments, the total number of cabinet ministers remained at 46, while the number of state ministers went up to 20, and deputy ministers to 26.

The Govt. brags about a transparent govt. and can the President please advise the public , the following.
1. The total amount of money spent on ministers, junior ministers, state ministers , their perks & security, office rents & expenses and payment to their staff plus petrol & sundries.
2. The total amount of money wasted and continue to waste in US dollars
on Sri Lankan airlines and Mihin air and maintenance of Mattala airport
and Hambantota port.
3. The total amount of money spent on excess armed forces personnel, doing nothing during peace time but getting the full pay. It is estimated that there are around 300,000 armed personnel on active
service and half of them should be put on volunteer service and given
employment in new govt. projects.
The colossal waste on above will amount to at least 1/3 of govt. expenses and will have serious effect on our micro economy. The Govt. should take a serious effort to cut down the expenses on above and not increase it. It is heartwarming to note that the govt. is engaged in major projects like building roads and houses for the poor but should be mindful of the debts incurred. We already owe China lot of money taken as loans during the previous regime and the Govt. should take austerity measures and spend only on essentials. Its good news that this govt. is able to get grants from several countries due to their alliances with democratic forces and they should make good use of it for meaningful projects, not like building an intn’l airport in a desert,and all people should benefit by it in all areas of the country.

Following that example, today we have many, many ministries and ministers that people even can’t understand the functions of separate bodies.
With the rising of the number of MPs the top faced new challenges to maintain power base and may be to hide corruption and mal-practices.
To add insult to injury provincial councils were also given forcefully (except for north-East) creating more opportunities for culprits.
People want to stop it, it’s time that a new constitution is also in the offing.
Do we really want this number of MPs in the parliament? In 1970 we had just over 100 MPs. With the advancement of technology MPs can communicate fast and easily with people.
Good highway net work as well to reach people quickly.
Though the population has doubled its good to have least number of MPs so things will be easy for the leadership and the people and we can divert more resources for development.
