Sirisena Blocking Gota’s Arrest

President Maithripala Sirisena is sitting on the long-anticipated arrest of Gotabaya Rajapaksa, brother of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa and the former Secretary, Ministry of Defence and Urban Development, Colombo Telegraph learns.

The Attorney General in an unusual move has sought the approval of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and the Minister of Law and Order Sagala Ratnayaka to arrest Gotabaya Rajapaksa over allegations of misappropriating public funds to the tune of Rs 91 million for the construction of memorials for his parents.

While it is questionable as to why the AG’s Department requires permission from anyone to prosecute Gotabaya, there’s also the question as to why the Department picked this relatively smaller infringement and not the MiG deal which is a far more serious infringement considering the money involved.

Wickremesinghe and Ratnayaka, prior to leaving for India, are reported to have distanced themselves from the entire process, informing the AG that it is not their business to advise him on such matters.

Colombo Telegraph learns that the delay in prosecution of this as well as other cases involving Gotabaya is solely due to President Sirisena not giving the green light sought from him by the AG, once again not a requirement for prosecution.

On 15th November, Law and Order Minister Sagala Ratnayaka made a detailed presentation to the UNP Working Committee on the current status of the bribery and corruption investigations.

Ratnayaka, in his presentation said that the Police Financial Crimes Investigations Division had forwarded 92 files to the Attorney General’s Department upon completion of investigations. He added that indictments have only been filed with regard to 13 cases.

The Law and Order Minister said the CID had investigated 38 cases out of which 14 deal with individuals and 24 relate to property matters. Out of the 14 which deals with high profile individuals only 6 had been indicted.

This was in response to the President’s allegation that Sagala was delaying prosecutions.

Dudley is a class deal maker. He is the MR 25% of the yahapalana government just overtaken basil.
Gota will never be arrested for his horrific crimes.
    MS is protecting him.

FCID is Ranil’s baby, not President’s. FCID gets instructions from the PM directly. Therefore, it is not a surprise if AG seeks PM’s permission for further action against Gotabhaya.
      .
As it transpired, both Rajapaksa/Wickremasinghe regimes are political godfathers of corruption and fraud unworthy to hold office now or in future. Therefore, Yahapalanya’s famous slogan – catching thieves of the previous regime – can no longer be valid or practical. Instead they should shake hands.
      .
I am not in support of Rajapaksa clan. However, President should not get involved in this, as it is obvious that PM/Sagala/UNP are hell bent on making the President unpopular. If he approves this, it will go as personal vendetta, which is the plan I believe. On the other hand, the duplicity of AG’s Dept and the Judiciary is super visible in the manner they postpone court hearings – some in three/four months and some in just a few days or a week or two.
      .
The President should play his cards carefully. Arresting Gotabhaya at this juncture is not in his favour. Why should he give ammunition to the other side, ok sides, plural? Let’s see the scenario unfolding. His own PM, who was the mastermind of the Bond Fraud ‘artfully’ evaded a future court case by transferring the blame on Mahendran/Aloysius. Not only that, PM even tried to make the President responsible for Mahendran’s appointment!!! Look at that. President is no fool not to see this – he is under “political witch-hunt” by his own PM and the half-government. :D :D :D Therefore, the President should not fall for the trap by getting himself involved in Gotabhaya matter. I don’t think he is even worried of them (Rajapaksas) coming back to power as it is highly unlikely.

        Chimp,

No matter who it is how mighty and big they are in a democratic country rule of law should apply. You cant have two sets of laws for rich and poor.

Go ahead and arrest the bugger although it is too late and dont have to consult spineless leaders.

          .
AG should go ahead and arrest Mahendran, Aloysius and Ravi K first. There is no reason to wait even when the PM himself has given a statement confirming any doubts that they were the people who orchestrated the Bond Scam. Anyways, under whose instructions they have done that is not relevant, as obviously the PM is above the law according to Yahapalanaya special legal system. Those who made rules are not allowed to break rules. Therefore, Ranil and Gotabhaya should go to prison TOGETHER ONE DAY, Ranil for an obvious fraud which has ample evidence and Gotabhaya if proved, not to luxury Angunakolapalessa holiday resort but to Welikada, real prison.

I am pretty sure anyone of the Rajapaksa clan cannot win the Presidential election.
        .
When there is no choice, people tend to accept the choice available. If there are other choices, people would not think that they were compelled to accept Rajapaksas. I saw somewhere someone was saying, when there are two known demons, one is herbivorous and the other is carnivorous, naturally people are compelled to think the herbivorous is better although he is a demon. Anyways, many people haven’t forgotten that this herbivorous demon who was previously carnivorous, became herbivorous as there is no meat. Meaning, when there is meat, he will become carnivorous. The same way, the carnivorous demon also was someone who pretended to be a herbivorous, misleading people, then turned out to be his real self – carnivorous. People should realize that they can’t keep on dancing with the devil and wonder why they are still in hell. Although it is too early to predict the outcome of the next Presidential election, the probability for it to be a Rajapaksa is zero as the majority masses are downright fed up with UNP/SLFP/SLPP. It is pretty sure that people would not elect someone from the same bunch as the next President. Therefore, if the President is in this scenario, I don’t know for sure, he should stay away from this FCID/AG/Judiciary drama as otherwise it will give unnecessary credentials to Rajapaksa clan.

        Absolutely, old codger.

Already no spell-check, no copy/pasting, no way of checking whether we’re going to be over 300 words.

        *

Oh, I’m pretty sure that there is no conspiracy behind that; however, it would help if CT were to tell us what is happening on the technical side of this site.

And also, have you noticed? The time at which a comment comes in has not been getting recorded. On a desktop computer so little indent of “replies” is shown that it becomes difficult to follow the sequence.

          *

This is by no means a complaint. I feel that we all have a bit of responsibility for “housekeeping”.

Sinhala Man I agree with both your comments above. why are they, …not sure who the “they” is , making it difficult for readers to comment on CT?

          S.M,
These troubles started after the recent “revamp” on the site.
Probably CT has hired incompetent programmers. Otherwise, they couldn’t take this long to fix it.

        Dear Rajash,

        *

May I please give you my observations on the housekeeping that we must do as those who value Colombo Telegraph as a forum?

        *

Right now all that you can do on Colombo Telegraph using the Firefox Browser is Read articles, and type comments in to this box, the way I am doing. However, when you try to put your name in, that is not possible. It is the same with the E-mail address. It just won’t go in. Go to “Post Comment”, and you are told that there are things missing. The mouse will take you to those boxes, but nothing else can be done with it.

        *

It is possible to post comments using Google Chrome and Internet Explorer. I use mostly the former. There may be other browsers also that work. The spell check does underline mis-spelled words. However, those words cannot be corrected using the mouse. In fact no action can be performed using the mouse, except moving the cursor. Copy, paste etc are not possible.

        *

I find that after the Chrome Browser is used my FREE malware detector states that this Adware is present:

        *

        Adware.Elex.ShrtCln

        *

This does not get detected if I have had a session on the computer using only Mozilla Firefox. After using Chrome, it does detect the Adware, but then a re-start is required to complete the process. I think that after the re-start there is no problem, but if I shut down completely, and then start up again from the “Power Button”, the Adware returns.

        *

It may be that if I name my Malware and Virus guards I will be faulted, the way Sirisena was for singling out “Milo”! Let those details be in a separate comment – which may be removed by a moderator!

Sinhala Man : DBS Jeyaraj turned off reader comments some time ago. The reader comments were in fact getting out of hand and abusive, in particular to his own “opnion columns” and not new items filed by other authors. The mistake he was doing is posting counter comments to the reader comments and it started spiraling. But DBS Jeyaraj is a private blog owned by him so he has the liberty to do what he likes. I am not sure what is the legal status of CT and whether they can even entrtain reader comments. But in this age of digital world if its not interactive it is not useful

When one puts the name of the adware in the browser, you get 15,000 results. Most of them (obviously I’ve explored only the first ten or so) seem to warn you not only of the dangers of this Malware, but also of the difficulty of removing it – unless you are really expert in handling software. Then, all of them, except the third in the listed solutions, suggests the easy way out, which is using this software:

        *

        SpyHunter4

        *

I now find that this can be downloaded for free, and will detect the Adware, but you are told that for removal, the “Full Version” has to be purchased. This software has been developed by “Enigma Software Group USA.LLC”. The recommendations I have traced back to the manufacturers.

        *

The third result came from “Malwarebytes”, the FREE version of which I have been using very effectively for about seven years. They sometimes give you a month’s trial of the “Premium Version” without asking for Credit Card details. This FREE anti-malware it is that has been detecting the Adware referred to. My virus scanner is a separate programme.

        *

Significantly, I find accounts on the web of many legal battles between the producers of “SpyHunter4” and “Malwarebytes”. It looks as though the former has lost all battles. I also find complaints that “SpyHunter4” once installed cannot be removed, and itself becomes a threat.

        *
My conclusion from all this is that the Adware in question has been developed by the manufacturers of the “anti-dote”, that it is NOT all that dangerous, but can cause plenty of irritation. Advertisers have obviously paid, so that our computers get re-directed to their products.

        *

One more hazard that confronts us, but whether our problems in posting comments is owing to this, I don’t know!

        *

        If relevant, other observations, please.

As for “virus guards”, they are very necessary, and I have tried the three most popular FREE virus guards, but the one that I have always come back to as my “regular” is “Avast”.

Two months ago, when renewing my license for Avast, I was offered a months’ free trial, but they wanted my Credit Card details. I have only a debit card, but it had been activated for on-line payments, but had never used. I was happy to see it accepted, and when, after four weeks I got the e-mail that unless I indicated otherwise, they would activate the paid version for $ 39.99. I said that I didn’t want the paid version. I was satisfied with the response that I received.

However, about 40 days later, I received a text message from my Bank saying that Rs 9,374.27 had been deducted on account of my purchase of Avast Premium. I looked through the emails in the “Updates” section, and there it was, an email that had come in five days earlier, saying that unless disabled, I would be charged US $ 59.99. My Bank gave me no chance whatsoever of getting back my money.

        *

I wrote, and the full amount was returned, after about five or six bits of correspondence. I lost only Rs 362.20 owing to the difference in the selling and buying rates of the dollar. What I find is that Avast outsources some of their marketing operations, and thus my involuntary purchase of something that I had first been offered for 19.99 – or something like that! I quite happily filled in various evaluations of service etc.

        *

        Thanks, Avast!

      Sir,
There was a massacre at Welikada Prison. In the heart of our capital city. Nearly 30 inmates in GOSL’s custody were massacred in cold-blood. Summary execution style. One at a time. Like animals. Pure slaughter. CID has all the evidence. All paths lead to this compulsive killer. A TOTAL FAKE BUDDHIST. It is a case AG can prosecute on auto-pilot. But, top civil servants in our country have no balls. AG is no different. Embarrassing we such spineless cowards among us. Boot-lickers occupy top positions. How can they turn a blind eye to such massive crimes? Where are the otherwise very loud “Fake Buddhists”? Where is their outrage? REPULSIVE
      Cheers!
PS: Would love to hear from those Fake Buddhists, who were so pissed about an harmless tatoo on a woman’s upper-arm..

        Dear Ben,

        *

Almost every comment here deserves, a “well-said.” I’m putting it below your excellent comment.

        *

But let’s not get obsessed ourselves with mutual back-slapping. We’ve got to think about who else can lead this country – from outside the gerontocracy. Ruwan Wijewardena, I have seen discribed in his Wikipedia entry as the next possible leader of the UNP. Rather TOO MUCH pedigree, perhaps, but I don’t think that THAT should be an absolute DISqualification.

        *

And what about Buddhika Pathirana, MBBS, who keeps getting more votes cast by the public of Akuressa and the Matara District than Mangala Samaraweera and “pretty” but older Sagala Ratnayake. Buddhika is just a backbencher – whom I knew nothing of, until I told myself that it’s our duty to find out who the few honest MPs are. I had earlier been concentrating on asking why Sajith Premadasa was not being given a chance. I wonder whether other readers could suggest guys who could replace these fellows. AND replace Maithri in 2020, although I personally feel that he’s not been too bad.

        *

Now, hold it; I’ve not checked yet whether these two guys also have sold their duty-free cars. But then that’s what even the JVP guys are said to have done.

        *

We’ve just got to start focussing on the SCALE of corruption in every case.

    • 7
      0

      Yes, Rohan.

The siblings have been a mill-stone round the poor man’s neck. Those stories about them worry me somewhat. Maithri really should not have appointed his brother Kumarasinghe on the salary and perks that are talked about.

      *

However, having worked so hard to get him elected 33 months ago (I’ve just realised that we’re past the half-way point, and so little achieved yet!), I just can’t bring myself to fault Maithri the way that I condemn the UNP section of the Government.

      *
It may be that it is he who is not keen on having these local elections in January. I hope that he has somebody monitoring the comments that we’re making. Those who want to postpone elections are playing with fire. Don’t be too surprised if the youth decide to get on to the streets here, too. We will have to blame our generation from whom these rotten leaders have come. I’ve just begun to ask myself who the next generation of leaders should be.

      *

As for the Sirisena kids – what a to-do over almost nothing. I mean, some of those things must be gone in to, but they are nothing like what it was like with the Rajapaksas, and now Ranil.

      *

Let me hope that what this article attributes to Maithri is not all true – I mean about his shielding Gota. I agree with Champa on that. It is not for nothing that politicians still read Machiavelli, although I know that none of us is happy when we hear the guy’s name.

      *

The President must act up to certain standards, though, when it comes to getting things investigated – including the End of the War. I know that Prabhakaran ought to have emulated old Ellala (Elara, to us), rather than use human shields, but we will begin to suffer ostracism unless our politicians begin to realise that History will soon begin to assess our generation of Sinhalese.

      • 3
        0

My dear Sinhala_Man, I have been noting your blind faith in our President. It is becoming obvious that you have a soft corner for him. It is not for me to challenge that right of yours.
        *
Is this the time to allow for doubts in our minds. Shouldn’t our President demonstrate that he is firm and credible. Has he. For how long should we hold on to our faith in him.
        *
We judge people by their words; by their actions. Do we have anything else to go by. Yes, we do. We have their past record. Do you see any merit in clinging on to blind trust.
        *
Let me come to your assistance.
        *
The President is perhaps a prisoner of the circumstances under which he came to power. The loyalty of the military to him is suspect.
(I have no proof; I am going by deduction!)

        • 4
          0

          My valued friend, “Unreal”,

Yes, I do find the man appealing in many ways. I wonder if you know sufficient Sinhalese to appreciate the wonderful way that he has with words?

          *

I’m sure that you would have seen my acknowledgement of my own inadequacies in my native language. However, that command that he has of Sinhala, and his chaste way of speaking, so different from the average politician, is a reason why he has been so successful in life. Yes, looked at from the point of view of where he came from, his has been a successful life.

          *

Which is the reason why he ought now to hand over to a younger person, two years from now. If he doesn’t, that respect that so many of us have for him will be gone. I’m sure that some philosopher must have said something memorable about how our personalities are never static, always evolving. I wonder if you noticed that I’ve identified two good UNP politicians? I think that THAT is something I must do for you. Could you please reciprocate by telling us which of the TNA guys we should be responding enthusiastically to?

          *

Identifying SLFP politicians who have a broad outlook may prove more difficult, since that is the party of those who are Sinhalese AND cherish Buddhist values AND the old village ways. The typical UNP guys are distrusted by most villagers. In one of the CT articles that is still current, you have Sarath de Alwis reporting how Sagala Ratnayake’s valet had refused to wake his master. The Sinhala words used tell me much, which you will necessarily miss.

          *

Aren’t you going too far in ascribing “blind faith” to me, though? I keep expressing my disappointment with Maithiri’s timorous performance. I rather feel that you’re saying almost the same thing as I. With slight variations of nuance, perhaps.

          *

          Thanks for the observations!

My dear Sinhala_Man, Words that are not followed up are mere slogans. I know enough Sinhala to get by.
            *
Blind faith is when you are lacking in some component(s) of information essential for a full understanding.
            *
TNA, as at present, has trustworthy leadership. Trust Hon. Sampanthan. He is honest.
            *
The whole concept of duty-free car permits is flawed.

            Dear Unreal,

There is so much of information that is available, that it has become difficult (even for people like us) to assess what is significant.

            *

Now why did I put in parenthesis a comment that verges on personal arrogance, seeming to suggest that we are a cut above the others in terms of intelligence? Well, because I feel it is so! Not necessarily owing to great virtue on our part, but we have survived, we remain closer to the way of life that we always followed, and wing to a variety of reasons (I should imagine) we find the time to ponder on what others are saying. However, we’ve got to know each other because we have spoken our minds frankly, without being cowed by the rich and the powerful who are around us. I was hoping that you would write directly to my e-mail, and that we could then chat on these subjects on phones: I seem to have a range of them!

            *

The young are not revolting in any meaningful way because they, too, are using the Information Technology that we have at hand now, but mostly to entertain themselves on social media. I do have a Facebook page that I don’t maintain – and so nobody will visit it. And people like me don’t know what is flying around on that, and on Twitter.

            *

Yes, I have come to like, respect, and trust Hon. R. Sampanthan. His father’s name takes some remembering! But after him? It’s wonderful that both he, and you can confidently affirm that you understand Sinhala. Learning a language is so time consuming.

            *

But who among the younger persons unafraid to express themselves on public affairs?

            *

You very rightly have said already that we’ve got to carry it to quite different fora.

What choice does MS have? He cannot take the 5th. in Sri Lanka.

What many are failing to accept is that MS is not Mr.Clean although he keeps wearing white and pretending to be so.

During the time of MR he was a key and longstanding member of the SLFP of equal ranking to MR.
He held key portfolios in the cabinet and was a member of MR’s inner circle.
He is keeping the noise up only to a point that the people will have interest in the subject. Going any further or bringing charges will come back to him.
Even during the period where it is said most of the war crimes happened he was in charge of the defense portfolio.
So even if he is not guilty by participation he is guilty by association.

It is in his best interest to protect all the thieves and war criminals of the last govt.

Peas in a pod. This is why our country can never progress. Each one is covering up for the other, and most probably up to the same crimes. People are tired of these politicians, their dishonesty, their selfishness, their greed, their corrupt ways, no thought for the rule of law, and no order. They do the crime, but are never held accountable, because someone is preventing justice from taking place. As always it is the people, who they turn to when it is election time, that suffers the consequences.
We are cursed with these people.

Whether Maithri likes it or not, I feel that we will have some elections; even the judges may realise that the mood of the people is such now that they will not tolerate for ever this manipulation.

        *

I hope that you’ve been following that dialogue between “Unreal” and me. We need many, many more people exchanging ideas among the different communities on this island.

        *

I’ve been speaking in defence of Maithri, whom I’ve never met. That he will not get pro-active is part of his nature, I guess, but to what extent is he in control of all that is happening. Dodging elections may be what he has asked Faisz Mustapha to do, but the fact is that the latter is hardly a typical SLFP guy. I’ve looked at his Wikipedia entry, and find that he’s the first Muslim (or the first for such a long time that the details don’t matter) to have won from the SLFP in the Kandy District.

        *
Clearly Faisz is an able man, and he is most articulate, in all three of our languages. Yet, given that they belong to a government with two components, he seems to more represent the UNP part of it. Of course, in this instance, what you say is true: the arithmetic is too clear, and that can’t be changed by my writing things in English on this website which may not be seen by many younger people.

        *

I must be getting close to 300 words, but I’ve looked again at what you’ve said – and must respond to YOU!

        Dear Srinivasan,

What I have written has already appeared. Reading it, even I am struck by how much we’ve come to accept “communal voting”. Actually, when it comes to casting preferences, myself, I do find myself giving one preference to a Tamil (I do keep my ears open for accounts of a good Muslim candidate as well).

        *

Again, somebody might say, that, too, shows how much the communal divides dominate our thinking. Ah well, (sigh!); it is so difficult for us to decide what can be done!

        *

There were comments made that suggested that I myself am a Tamil masquerading as a Sinhalese. In your case, I hope that your handle is really your name. I say so, because I find it strange that you don’t seem to realise that it was the UNP that put mud all over their own bodies. These guys who are now in hot water are guys who can talk! Somebody had given a link to Rosy Senanayake saying things, in Sinhala, in defence of Sujeewa Semasinghe, and boy, she can talk! The lapses in to English were necessary and relevant, and revealed a fluency in English, too, that was impressive.

But the content! There can be no doubt that she would have been more privy to the date of dissolution than DEW Gunasekara. There’s no point blaming those guys any more! There has to be more explanation from the Grand Old Party. The public, too, can think!

        *

I feel that the mood of the public is so despairing and disappointed that there will be more floating votes than ever before. Yes, it may benefit the Rajapaksas. I must listen to Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s speech again. Have you heard it, Srinivasan? You don’t have to search very much to locate it. still displayed on the opening page, but with very few comments.

      Zaheer,

You’re an absolute idiot. Exchange a packaged crime for LTTE elimination and Colombo beautification? As a sec, of defense and UD, it was his duty that he accomplished perfectly because his only higher authority was his brother who was in his control though.

There is no shortage for brains here, but for balls. From top to bottom playing safer shows how selfish lot we have to depend on being unfortunate Sri Lankans.

      Dear Zaheer,

      *

It is easy for you to say such things. I’m a Sinhalese who is exposed to horrible nightmares over what we did to so many innocent Tamils. The evidence is too graphic.

      *

I’m not an “expert”, but why not ask the residents of Meethotamulla about “Colombo beautification”?

      *

Thank God that there are no more white vans, but this supposed “freedom” we enjoy is not everything. We’re paying for all sorts of crimes by others. Have you for a moment considered how much of indirect taxation there is? There was such a fuss when some things called ‘FEECS” were necessary to import anything, including books. Must have been in the 1960s. They said that it was a tax on knowledge.

      *

I know that I’m rather an ignoramus, but I’m trying to give my two rupees worth of comments for the good of the country – and on that, too, I’m paying – now what DO we call that tax? Ah, yes, VAT! I know I have to pay for data, but TAX as well!

But Mangala brought that tax down, didn’t he? Or did he? The papers also get so mixed up. Nobody cares for accuracy. Nobody even apologises for crimes committed.

      *

If what is said by CT is correct, which we think is otherwise, the Buddhist
priest Abhayatissa told a gathering at a temple in Galle in the presence of MARA a few days after Sirisena was elected that a PINGUTHTHARA has become the President is correct. This man obviously has no guts. If he think that the people will revolt, he has at his disposal the Police and the Army. This man Gota is a fellow shit scared. Just before Ranjan Wijeratne was assassinated this fellow went down on his knees and begged Wijeratne to release him. Now the fellow talks big. Haven’t you seen his reactions at an interview with a foreign journalist, which indicates that he is shit scared. These Rajapaksas are cowards.. Come on SIRA show your colours.

President Sirisena won the election with the support of UNP, then due to UNP allowing him to bring SLFP members into the cabinet he was able to show the masses he is still a SLFP at heart. Then what happens? He allows SLFP who did not support him, to control him. He does not take any action on important matters but hides behind collective view. SLFP cabinet members who did not support the President still have connection with Mahinda as Mahinda has their files. At the end President sits on the fence protecting Mahinda and his gang of thieves. Even this recent trip abroad shows that after President publicly stating he will not join Mahinda has allowed a delegation to meet and negotiate with Mahinda when he is away from the country. He can once again hide behind the collective decision as he will come out and say I was not in the country when the deal with Mahinda was done. Postponing elections also part of this game played by the President, until Mahinda group joins the so called Maithree group every action will be taken to postpone elections.

People do not believe such mud slinging to GR. Instead, they will gather around him, whether you like it or not.

In this modern era of communication, a high profile figure like Gota cannot do such a low thing. If so, that will come to light in no time. Native Vedda, did you get that news from the Channel 4? Or the JDS?

President Sirisena came to the power giving strong promise that he will abolish the Executive Presidency and bring yahapalanaya to the country. Also he promised to bring all mega dealers, killers, looters to books. He specially sold high profile cases such as Lasantha Wickramathunga, Prageeth Eknaligoda, Waseem Thajudeen in political stages as those were famous topics among General Public . He promised that he will bring back money and Assets robbed by Rajapaksha Family. He couldn’t bring any killers before the Law as all those killings were done by various Armed forces members under Rajapaksha brothers instructions. Actual situation is Armed forces are not co operating with CID investigators. They hide vital information from the CID . President doesn’t have a backbone to order Armed Forces Commanders to provide information required by CID/Police/CCD. He may be under the impression that he will be unpopular if he deals in such a manner because of “Ranaviru” concept. On the other hand he knows that he will never ever be the President or Prime Minister in the country again in his life. Knowing very well that he wants to cut a deal with Rajapakshas that he and his Family’s safety after the retirement. He use biggest Media Prostitute, Sirasa to throw mud at UNP and Leaders and use bond commission to create a bad impression on UNP and it;s Leaders. One day he will be the history as a biggest betrayer as he is going to betray 62 Laks who voted for him

    • 3
      2

      Lapatiya
The President, I am sure gave all those promises in good faith.
However, just in one month, he realized that UNP has robbed the Central Bank. He seemed to have thought it was Ranil’s buddy Mahendran, so he dissolved the Parliament to save UNP from embarrassment. Anyways, to his utter consternation, he found out that UNP was entangled in the Bond Fraud deeper than he thought. When Ranil/UNP were challenged from all sectors insisting President to take action against them, President had no choice but to appoint a Commission. He favoured UNP again by not prosecuting Mahendran. Then I’m sure the President received the biggest shock when the PCoI findings proved that it was none other than Ranil under whose instructions the Bond Scam had been carried out. Now how could President take action against others when his buddies have done the biggest Bank fraud in the history? Look at Senasinghe, he should receive the Foot in the Mouth Award!
      .
About Lansantha/other fellows, well FCID is under Ranil and the Law&Order is under a UNP Minister. You should ask Ranil about the delay as the President has delegated power to them adequately if they wanted to take action.
      .
Re: abolition of Executive Presidency, well the President seem never to know Ranil would bring a Federal Constitution when he made the promise to abolish the Executive Presidency. Further, there is no democracy in the Parliament. It is Ranil’s Carrot OR Stick that decides the democracy as seen at the LG Bill. In a situation like this, no Leader in his right mind will even think of abolishing the Executive Presidency paving the way for an anarchy. If anyone tries, all 15 million + Wimal, ok except MR/JOkers/UNP, will come forward to protect the Executive Presidency.

        5

        Champa,

Can you explain what you mean by “robbed the Central Bank”? What was the amount that was robbed? Can you explain how a robbery took place when the bids were made by investors (including, ETF, BOC, HSBC as well as Perpetual Treasuries) on 30 year bonds offered by the Central Bank ? Aren’t you aware that the funds were needed to meet loan repayments and other capital expenditure of the government? Increasing borrowing demand increases interest rates, which is unavoidable. In any case, beneficiaries are also government entities, as well as PT. The whole Bond issue loss has been highly exaggerated by people who have scant knowledge of bonds and time value of money.
Why don’t you talk about the Greek bonds, on money invested by the Central Bank on a totally futile exercise where there was absolutely no return!

          Dear Kalu Nangi,

Surely you know that the entire story has appeared in the media in great detail. It is very unfair for you to keep badgering us with requests to re-tell it, time and time again.

I forgot myself at this point and tried to paste a link, before I realised that it is something we can’t do at present. Will mention it at the end.

          *

You surely know why that statue of Justice holding up the weighing scales (I mean what we used to call “tharadiya” – quite disappeared now – but may have antique value); well, why Justice is blindfolded? There has to be absolute impartiality in both investigation and filing action. Now “anything goes.”

          *

You are biased, Kalu Nangi. Not all the evidence in the world will convince you. But you are not alone. There is corruption in the highest places, among the most sanctimonious.

I’m getting on to a hobby horse now! Sinhala _Man-

I am sorry to say I have not seen or read a comprehensive assessment including the calculation of the total anticipated loss on this bond scam. Fair to Kalu Nangi could anyone refer us to the detailed computation if it is available on net.

            • 2
              0

              Dear NV and Sinhala Man,
              The computation is quite simple.
A bond is basically a loan, the taker pays interest. The CB issued the bonds at 12% instead of 10%. That is adifference of 2% , which one may describe as a “loss”
The amount raised was 10 billion. 2% of 10 billion is 200 Million. This is the loss per year to the public. In the period of the loan (30 years), the govt. will pay out 30 x 200 = 6000 million extra as interest. But if interest rates increase above 12% in the future (rate was 22% in 1999) , this will be a profit, not a loss. The sate DOES NOT LOSE more than 6 billion over 30 years. In 30 years time, 30 billion probably will not buy you a high-end SUV!
Champa and many commentators are financially illiterate and keep repeating exaggerated lies put out by self-proclaimed pundits. Whatever profits made by PTL are in the secondary market (that’s another story)

        • 2
          2

          Kalu

Oh, give me a break Nangi. When were you born? Yesterday? I have written many rigmaroles about the CB Bond Scam. Oh, man, it is a pain to read your comment.
I will answer only one question, about the amount robbed, by quoting someone, which is easier than explaining. The Minister of Public Enterprises revealed in August 2017 that the Bond Scam would cost the country Rs. 1 TRILLION. Do you know who is the winner? The PTL.
I am sure a number of UNP Ministers/MPP – senior and junior will not contest at the next election because the money they have earned by way of payolas, (such as apartments, luxury vehicles, foreign trips, etc.) commissions and bribes are more than enough for generations.

          • 3
            3

            Champa,

Thanks for your comeback. You have shown very clearly how the media and the people who are hell bend in destroying the UNP has brainwashed you. In your comments you have belittled politicians and their lack of knowledge. Pray, in that case, how can you believe what the State Minister of Public Enterprises, Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena says. He is Maithree’s man and now they are making deals with devil. How did Lakshman Yapa arrive at such a conclusion? Did he study the COPE report? Does he understand the explanations given in the footnotes (which have been ridiculed by the equally ignorant JVP)? Champa, there are two sides to a story. Try to understand the other side as well through your own findings without getting brainwashed by those who have the media at
            their beck and call.
I agree with some of your comments but in this Bond issue, you are way off the mark.

              0

              Kalu
I quoted Lakshman Yapa’s statement as it had never been challenged by Ranil or other UNP Ministers/MPP. And Bond Scam is not a story but a well planned, well timed, well orchestrated fraud abusing the High Office of the Prime Minister.
As I said, I have explained in length many times about the loss to the country. You could search my comments in the Archives and see my points as repeating them is a waste of my time.

        • 0
          0

Now, what was Kalu Nangi trying to tell me at such length, that it got edited out? A bit unfair by you, because it is hardly feasible for us to use a pointer and count the words on the monitor. I do hope that CT will get the cut and paste working again, since that’s the only way I have to see how many words I’ve used.

          *

And with no time of posting given, plus the problems caused by variation of indentation (on a mobile phone there often is only one word per line), well, I’m asking you at 2.40 pm., what your observation was.

          *

It is difficult for us to work out who is holding up the Local Govt Elections, but given all the revelations about the Bond Scam, they’ve got to give us a chance to know what the country is thinking right now.

          *

Certainly, I see the scale on which there has been abuse by both the Rajapaksas and the UNP as horrendous.

            Sinhala_Man,

I did read your articles on this site titled “Thomian Pharisees”. You and I have something in common. As a little kid I was educated at that glorious school up in the mountains, which was a mixed school then. Sorry to note that its administration is not what it used to be during the days of SLAR.

Regarding the loss resulting from the Bond issue, (which I was trying to explain when I went over board exceeding the 300 word limit,) if you read “oldcodger”s comments appearing in this page, you will get the correct picture. Thank God, he has not been brainwashed by the media!

The first was Angela Seneviratne who is actually on the Executive Committee. The second is Himali Wanigaratne, who was in SLA’s time.

              *
Five of my sisters were also Old Girls, but none has joined the Association. All have taught in the school; funny – I’m the only guy who has never actually been on their payroll. However, they’ve had only two A. Level English passes ever (I mean the “serious” English subject, not “General English”). That was in 1981 – also SLA’s time. And I taught them privately, at home.

              *
Tissa Liyanage is a Bandarawela lawyer; I got some money out of his father, who was a very prosperous lawyer. The other guy was the brilliant Roshan Miskin who got a B for English, but never entered a University. He opted to work in a Dubai hotel to see his elder brother (same batch – Roshan having got one of SLA’s crazy double promotions), through Architecture in Moratuwa. I taught him for free. Now all he posts on FB is about such esoteric Buddhism as I cannot understand.

            oldcodger
That is not right. I challenged you and proved that your calculation is absurd when you first posted that comment some months ago. I quoted the Minister here, as I was lazy to type the same thing again. If I save my comments, it is only a matter of 2 minutes to make you a liar.

            • 1
              0

              Champa,
You certainly did NOT disprove the calculation mathematically. If you can, it’s so simple to do it again. The fact is that you can’t, and have to fall back on your lame excuse of being lazy to type.
As to the Minister, even he just spouted the figures but did not produce any proof. I repeat, THERE IS NO WAY the “loss” can be more than about 200 Million a year. What all you economic pundits don’t realize is that profits (5 billion) made by PTL DID NOT come from state funds but from the secondary market. That is why even the Supreme Court ruled there was no real loss.

              • 1
                0

Oldcodger, you have hit the nail on the head!
Media can shape the public opinion of the masses. Sirasa, especially goes to town in destroying the image of the UNP, by getting people who are anti-UNP to express negative opinions. If the President had appointed the then Central Bank Governor AM, Sirasa would have been meek as a mouse! They would have then upheld the Supreme Court ruling that there was no real loss.

                • 1
                  0

                  Kalu,
Sirasa is actually after Ranil, not the UNP. It has its own UNP pets, such as Sajit P. It goes after its imagined enemies such as Canagey of ICTA with a vengeance. Even Rupavahini at its worst was not as low as Sirasa is nowadays.
Pity that so many people can’t see through the rubbish they put out.

Contrary to most of you “Colombians”, I’m proud of my President’s background; and of his bicycle; and of having been a “Grama Sevaka” – and not one of these G. Niladharis. By the way, it amazes me that so few realise that he actually has TWO tertiary qualifications. He’s obviously very well read. I envy that flow of words that he has.

      *

But I do wish he had more courage. Both to tackle the Rajapaksa criminals, and to say here, in Sri Lanka, what he says abroad about getting all crimes investigated.

In a country gradually spiralling into economic and social destruction the nadir
point is having Kudu Dimu as PM and Gamarala as President. The men-in-waiting for both positions are, arguably, worst. But, all this has to be viewed as the consolidated gains of Sinhala Only and the 1956 Apey Anduwa Revolution. While India, Indonesia, Vietnam in the region are moving towards 1st/2nd world status, thanks to a Sinhala-Buddhist-centred majority governance system, we are heading the other way.

Can Sri Lanka’s rapid decline be averted? At least in the Greco times Gods themselves came down to earth and helped matters. No such luck now.

Sri Lanka functioned very well under the sinhala buddhist majority governance in 2005-15. In fact SL could increase its GDP by 4 times, ended war and there was huge development in the country

If Sri Lanka did “functioned very well under the sinhala buddhist majority governance in 2005-15 why didn’t you vote for Dr Mahinda Rajapaksa (LLD) in 2015?

You typed you didn’t vote for Dr Mahinda (LLD) in 2015.

Sri Lankan Politics is that “You scratch my back, I scratch yours” policy. Sirsena or Ranil for that matter allow Gothabaya or Rajapaksa to be arrested or put in prison. Because there will be an uprising from Gothabaya’s supporters and once Gothabaya comes to power , these two will be imprisoned as a rebuttal. So better to scratch each others’ back, Damn the people of this country.

    Dear Author, and Participants,
You are all in the right track. But can the top executives of the Country go on the right track? They need to compete with each other and come back to power!. What can be the platform that will return them to power? After independence from the British what is the platform they used to come to power again and again? Why did they get rid of honest and hardworking officers and executives from the tri-forces and the public services. Why did they let down their own Country go down the precipice? Why is that they are not the least worried about the future of their Country? If the Country has integrity, prosperity will make the citizens powerful. If the citizens are given the right thinking and courage these cheap politicians will be replaced with real Country loving politicians. Don’t you know why these politicians need so much of power in the judiciary and everything else? They all need tons of money to get the citizens to vote for them. They need to compete with each other using ungodly platforms and come again to ruin the Country. This is a normal practice and once they get back into power, they all are friends and all friends jump the merry go round! Who will find out what is the need of the Country and who is there to care for real needs? If they are blamed for some fraud they will create a bigger fraud to overshadow the former fraud. If they are found committing a crime they will do another crime that will over shadow the previous crime! That is the meaning of politics of Sri Lanka!

NOPE Richard. People are only awaiting the next major election which will come in 2019/2020. Then you will see how people play real politics. These fraudsters from both sides have no future. This is their last chance. Have patience. If you think people will elect these leaders again, you and them both are wrong. There is nothing to worry for the future of Sri Lanka. The real owners of this country will take the reins in their hands. These crooks are yet to see the power of the other side. It is not the money which will be the decisive factor at the next election, but valor, unity and raw power of determination of the people whom they are yet to encounter in politics.

        Dear Champa,
Education knowledge, wisdom and maturity for decision making needs inculcated from age 3. The rest of the world spend much time and expertise in educating cultures of major Languages, human relations and social sciences which are essential components for development. To become a leader of a Country and keep the Country in esteemed position to be recognized by the world Countries and expand productivity, the Leaders, and Executives must be people of universal standing caliber. Are you expecting your Country to get up to a better standard after over 70 years and still continuing downfall?

        • 2
          1

Yes, of course Richard. You have only seen the same bunch of politicians for 7 decades. I am telling you none of the leaders who were elected so far didn’t have a vision for Sri Lanka. It was always a mixed bag. Our country needs a leader who doesn’t need the help of advisers to understand core issues. After 7 decades, people will get the opportunity to elect such a person as the 7th Executive President. I have hope.

              Champa,

JR had a vision for Srilanka. That is full throttle private sector lead growth now practiced by the entire world except Cuba. The tragedy is with change of govt, its being tinkered and there is no continuity.

                Upali
JR didn’t have a common vision, he only had a private vision.
And IMF’s “one-size-fits-for-all” private sector-led growth is not suitable to Sri Lanka.
What we should have is a common vision for government sponsored agriculture-led growth.

            Absolutely, Champa.

Just imagine what a sorry performance this has been from Ranil. Born to all the advantages possible, with more years of experience of politics than a man like poor Mozart had to live on this earth – and what a mess!

            *

Somebody has actually said that Ranil can’t (or won’t) Micro Manage. Then can he operate at a higher level? I don’t know what Ranil’s wife specialises in teaching, but perhaps those Augustan poets, Dryden and Pope, must have well described the sort of guy whom Ranil is like. Unfortunately, I don’t much care for the Augustans to delve in there. And why should we? Just kick the sorry guy out!

            *

I get the feeling, Champa, that you know much more than I do? I’m trying to name the good guys in the UNP. Have I got them right? Buddhika Pathirana of Akuressa; Ruwan Wijewardena of Biyagama; Gayantha Karunatilleke (not so young) of Elpitiya. Any others?

Gotabaya Rajapakse was just a Ministry Secretary. If ministry Secretaries are arrested, there are ones who became billionaires because of Mahinda Rajapakse. IF Attorney General Goes ahead and arrest gota when the next govt comes which happens for sure, AG should be arrested for corruption. Because, the clarification process is corruption. Rajapakse clan swindled the country, that is true. Yet, Arresting a ministry is completely political. NExt to Central Bank Day light robbery is Avant Guard theft. there are so many minisiters who got money in that some names in Panama Papers. On the other hand, some who got money from Central Bank theft, names did not come up yet. Just think what was the hurry to get one, 15, and 75 billion to repair road. there was no flood and washing away of roads. IT was because UNP was bankrupt and they needed money in a hurry.

It not Ranil screwing up MY3. It is all together. destroying all the contenders including MY3. Otherwise, there are many Ministry Secretaries to be arrested. Some became billionaires. If the arrest happens it is compeletly political. Even for Rajapakse Clan, they allowed Basil Rajapakse and Namal Rajapakse to play the same cunning game. Because of those are Wickramsinghe relatives.

  • 1

If MY3 and Ranil are one team, if the parliament is respectable than the Welikada people, they can bring the Retroactive Legislation and can arrest Mahinda Rajapakse and recover the loot. Because there are so many thieves made because of Mahinda Rajapakse. right now, everything are so much money spending, then Mahinda Rajapsakse says I ordered it so the thief stays, as it is the politician, outside while perpetrator who stayed in the hospital go home on bail which extends until the next govt. So, the FCID is a farce except one Grand thief and his gang of thieves were exposed. They are rats. They are looking for ways to hide and escape.

C’mon, Jims, Ranil himself is a fraudster. How could he arrest Mahinda for fraud? He can only give a high five to Mahinda and have a belly laugh for fooling the President.

Central Bank case is a Pre -planned legal theft. but, conflict of interests, frauds, pre planning , bribes… are very clear. So, they should get prison sentences.

The general atmosphere here above is writers and commentators wish to predict that never a member of Old Royal Family will be arrested and punished for any crime. It may be correct or rather it appears to be correct. But is that so simple? Is Lankawe politics is so simple to predict on the sport or on the fly?

The yesterday’s drama of Ranil witnessing at PCol is not yet decoded. Colombo Media is still scrambling to get their best out on that. Today, Brother Prince’s arrest flared and is fading at same virulency. Tomorrows’ box office is about Old King will be meeting New King to have replaced Ranil by him. New York may have one Broadway for shows. But the political horizon of the Colombo City itself is built on the high way of Broadway.

It might be quite normal or easier for scientists to understand Astro Physics or Atomic Physics. But anyone attempts to understand Lankawe politics always fails. Not for Locals, but from British Empires’ Lords Donoughmore, Soulbury to American State Secretary John Kerry, that is the verdict of Sinhala Only Jury of Lankawe. Did Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh, and Modi…fare anything different? Not at all! It is only a dark-gloomy-uncertain “space travel”, beyond Milky Way. It is more chaos than anything Columbus’ ships faced at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. It is in that difficult, mentally and intellectually challenging path the poor Lankawe Modayas are traveling for 70 years to vote and bring them a democratic government. Further burden is, the Universal Franchise- the broomstick- the mouse is not being able to carry, but, unfortunately stuck with it. For the analysts, the job, to predict where it is going or what is to come tomorrow out of Lankan Politics is getting ever harder.

No question! Ranil’s Indian visit is one of the comets causing the current series of calamities in planet of Lankawe politics. Ceremonially or with elaborate celebrations, surrendering to Lankawe public pressure and legal procedures is a trump card for Ranil in meeting with Modi. That is reasonable that he had ensured it preceded his trip to India. But while he is talking to Mr. Modi, spreading to media that Brother Prince is about to be arrested and being saved by an override of Ranil’s current opponent, New King is little over doing to strengthen Ranil’s hand in Delhi (in other words seeking acceptance to Ranil’s pleads in Delhi to protect him from potential political downfall back at home). This is the result of an illusion of simply seeing Geneva’s UNHRC’s arbitrational procedures being debuted in Delhi too, who the savior of Lankawe from that Geneva’s Cookie Monster. (Cookie monster doesn’t have history of having hurt the child but look forward to play with it.) By acting this drama, Lankawe behaving like a woman who frequently sleeps with other men had developed a habit of moving the window curtain in the night to peep out in the dark to check if anybody around would cause him trouble at home in the morning, is now repeating unconsciously while sleeping home with her husband too. Why this over kill may be explained by the last week’s Island wide Oil Shortage drama.

It is not strange a woman uses her boyfriend to fight with husband or the other way, to shed off or shrug off the unwanted one. But our Smart Mother Lankawe has her third dimension or Einstein’s forth or even a possible fifth dimensions on that. Mother Lankawe uses her husband to fight boyfriend, then the boyfriend to the street men, and street men back to tame the Husband.

It may appear that there is squabble between New King and Ranil. This something need for him to wade off Modi on the demands he is expected to put forward during the talks. SLFP and Joint Comedy Club will be the defenses to ETCA and Air Port. Mr. Modi has to be balanced off, not discarded, because India is need to balance China, China cannot be discarded because it is needed to Balance the America and the West in UNHRC and America or the West cannot be ignored as they are needed to balance back the Husband at home, the opposition political parties of Yahapalanaya, when the election time comes.

Yesterday Ranil signed his land sale deeds with China. Today Harsha is finishing his deeds with UNHRC. Tomorrow, Ranil will be signing the white elephant, Mahinda Bachan Naked International AirPort deals with Mr. Modi. Just now Mother Lankawe had got out of the Peer Review. Last time Sonia bailed her out from that – an every five year celebration at Geneva. The boy, who lived butterfly life the entire year, starts to look for “horse riders” (Kuthirai Oodurawar) to write his examination, when the years end approaches. Last time it was Mahinda Samarasinghe and this time Harsha de Sinha were the horse riders for Lankawe at Peer Review session. When UNHRC gave Harsha 230 requests, he added another 12 more to that and made it as 242 and gave it back to UNHRC to keep it carefully in its safes not being vanished in the thin air, and came back home.
Now Ranil is in India. We don’t know what is going to be in the Colombo Media’s plates there when he returns.

If you read overseas articles, what we hear in Sri lanka about Hambanthota is all lies. that is what China wanted. So, china will take most of the weight. Sri lanka will have to take the weight, only in case Sri lanka go back the promise and dance to the Trumpisthan tune which they are doing. On the other hand, MR was trying to give extra because his cronies went for money.
Remember champika Ranawaka recently said KIA reaches it capacity next year. Some saying Mattala is waste for some years because of management weaknesses. Otherwise, there is no need to hand over it to India. Because, certain activities in KIA can be transferred to Mattala right now.

“You scratch my back; and, I yours (at the appropriate time)” is the unwritten law by which most politicians in the South survive. Gamarala is no spring chicken when it
comes to bakshi. That some of the Yahapaalanaya/UNP lot protect rogues from the
earlier regime is an open secret. The so called 98% literate voter may fool himself he
makes and breaks governments. My left foot!!! Governance in this country is a conspiracy against the people by a selected set. JVP’s Wijeweera knew that, which is why he was barbecued at the first opportunity.

Todays deal which President Sirisena supports to jointly work with JO (Mahinda SLFP Gang) includes Mahinda being appointed as PM or Leader of the Opposition. If Mahinda gets the post of the Leader of the Opposition, he will bring about a no confidence motion against the ruling party after getting some more SLFP members to sit in the opposition. This will trigger a Constitutional Crisis. President Sirisena in the first instance will not give PM position to Mahind. Once the no confidence motion is passed creating a Constitutional Crisis Mahinda will become the PM. This means the end of Yahapalana – Sirisena promises to bring the rogues before the courts and Yamapalanaya will come into effect once again. Historians will say Sirisena was a person who could never be trusted.

A friend in need is a friend indeed. Even after MS stabbed in the back of MR to contest, GR helped DS in the famous Araliya Hotel flooding case. Dudley Sira will never forget that. So MS will help GR and possibly MR too. We are supposed to have de-politicized the state machinery. Truly Independent! My Foot! Why on earth must the principle legal officer seek opinion from his Minister or the PM? In effect there is no independence. What an eye wash with this 19th Amendment and all!

President can go easily without Mahinda Rajapakse as the PM. There are more people there, even in the UNP. IT is Jayalalitha who said, Political friendships are alliances and there no permanent friendships in politics. So, MY3 should not be concerned about severing the Ranil and MY3 political friendship.
Oil shortage is not related to this. Some people bring conspiracy theories here. My guess is it was the Ministry Secretary who was not a Professional in the field (he Was Arjuna Ranathunga’s brother) who caused the situation. Most probably, he may have asked some SANTHOSAM. So, the low quality fuel came.
