President Maithripala Sirisena continued his practice of taking SLFP MPs representing the opposition on overseas tours as members of his delegation.
The President has taken with him two MPs of the SLFP, namely S.B. Dissanayake and Dayasiri Jayasekera to Singapore where Sirisena will attend a number of events including an environmental conference for Asia Pacific state authorities.
None of the government ministers have been included in the President’s delegation to Singapore.
When asked why the President decided to take two SLFP MPs to Singapore, a spokesperson from the President’s Office told Colombo Telegraph it was the President’s prerogative. “It is the President who makes final decisions on his delegation,” he added.
Several SLFP MPs, including Dilan Perera, Nishantha Mutuhettigama, Lasantha Alagiyawanna, Dushmantha Mithrapala, Lasantha Alagiyawann, Angajan Ramanathan and Sriyani Wijewickrema were seen touring in the Philippines with President Sirisena last week.
Foreign Minister Thilak Marapana was the only Cabinet minister who took part in the President’s tour during which he signed five MOUs with the Philippines.
