Sirisena Should Be Held Responsible For Homophobic Incidents In Sri Lanka In Coming Days: Sri Lankan LGBTQI+ Community

The LGBTQI+ community in Sri Lanka strongly condemned the controversial statement by President Maithripala Sirisena and said it was an act of using homophobia to amuse his political gallery.

“By trivialising homophobia in this fashion, President Sirisena should be held responsible for any homophobic incidents that Sri Lankan citizens may experience in the coming days,” the LGBTQI+ community said, in a statement today.

The full statement issued by them is as follows:

Statement by the Sri Lankan LGBTQI+ community and allies on President Sirisena’s homophobic comments at a public rally, 5 November 2018

At a public rally held on Monday 5 November 2018, President Maithripala Sirisena of Sri Lanka made a series of homophobic comments. The President, who was in a Joint Government with the United National Front (UNF) led by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, categorically stated that Mr Wickremesinghe rejected national values and had entered a “butterfly life” [“samanala jeevithaya” in Sinhala], which implies a queer lifestyle. Sirisena then commented that key decisions of government were made not by the President nor by party seniors but by Mr Wickremesinghe and his “butterfly caucus” [“samanala rela” in Sinhala]. These comments were met with laughter and applause by those gathered on stage beside Sirisena, including Mahinda Rajapaksa who was appointed as Prime Minister by Sirisena.

As members of the Sri Lankan LGBTQI+ community, we categorically condemn this homophobia openly promoted by the elected head of state of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. This statement makes it clear that President Sirisena has absolutely no notion or commitment whatsoever for the fundamental rights and human dignity of all Sri Lankans. It is particularly disappointing coming from a President elected on the votes of many members of the Sri Lankan LGBTQI+ community who saw his candidacy as a respite from the rampant homophobia of the preceding Rajapaksa presidency.

We also wish to reiterate that the accusation that the UNF was run by an LGBTQI+ agenda is wildly inaccurate. We have experienced the UNF’s own efforts to keep fundamental rights of LGBTQI+ Sri Lankans rights at bay, and to ignore the pleas of non-cisnormative and non-heteronormative Sri Lankan citizens to ensure their fundamental rights. The UNF’s Minister of Justice, to cite but one example, was reluctant to even provide a courtesy call appointment for a delegation of LGBTQI+ professionals, in the aftermath of the Indian Supreme Court’s progressive decision to repeal Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code. Had the UNF actually been led by an LGBTQI+ agenda, Sections 365 and 365A of the Sri Lankan Penal Code would by now be repealed, and equality irrespective of Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity/Expression and/or Sex Characteristics [SOGIESC] would have been enshrined in the Constitution.

President Sirisena’s statement is therefore a clear case of misinformation, and misleading his own party and supporters. We condemn his use of homophobia to amuse his political gallery. By trivialising homophobia in this fashion, President Sirisena should be held responsible for any homophobic incidents that Sri Lankan citizens may experience in the coming days.

We call upon all Sri Lankans who respect the fundamental rights of each and every Sri Lankan for equality, justice and dignity to join with us in categorically condemning President Sirisena’s homophobia and public incitement of homophobic hatred.

This is nothing but personal attack on PM. Nothing else ..
I do not think it has any legal implication or any other intents. In
    Politics these are common things.

I completely agree with you. Politicians can say anything to attract the attention of the people. So that we do not have to take them seriously.

Bondscam Ranil and his Royal College thieves who looted the Central Bank of Sri Lanka and long suffering people of Lanka, and were planning to sell all strategic assets – land, marine resources, energy security and transport infrastructure on the Fake advice of Washington and Japan’s Economic Hit me who have put Lanka in a debt trap to ADB, JAIC, WB and IMF, are an insult to Butterflies!
Ranil should have been impeached when the Bondscam report came out. However, everyone was distracted with RAW -Facebook networked attacks on Muslims in Digana with Mahasohon Balakaya so India could get Colombo East Terminal, Trinco oil tanks and Mattala Airport from Bondscam Ranil. Colombo’s US funded Fake ‘civil society’ should wake up as its time for Bondscam Ranil and his Royal thieves of Public wealth to GET OUT!

With all due respect, the Pinkies can do whatever they want with their organs in which ever place they like.

But when it comes to leading the country, which affects all Sri Lankans, Pinkies should simply stay out of it and leave that to real Men.

In the Army we don’t encourage Pinkies for this same reason. This is nothing against the Pinkies. But being a soldier requires a lot of grit, physical endurance, ability to cope with hardship and a thousand and one other demands that the Pinkies simply cannot cope with.

But to their credit, Pinkies hardly ever enlist in the forces knowing fully well that they cannot take it up (pun intended) with the demands.

Similarly, they should refrain politics and focus on what they do best.

You say pinkies are not tolerated in the army. You are partly right. In fact a good number of army personnel whom I know have both homosexual and heterosexual experiences. Of course they are married and having children. Display of sexual strength is a part of the “unofficial training” and the Retired Lieutenant cannot deny that. Even Senior school boy cadets are required to show their abilities while in camps, very early in the morning during the last few days. Yes! those soldiers who look a little bit girlish or young although they are strong and muscular are subjected to frequent sexual assaults. But good many of them have gone through the mill though uncomfortable.

WAIT, , Now we have sex doll brothels at the moment only women. The day will come to make muscle men dolls with an eight-inch penis. They will be big and can be programmed with a better thinking brain and we can put them in the parliament as well. Better than MARA, Ranil and Sira.

“Not at all,” he says. I reach out and grab the silicone penis. It feels both firm and fleshy, the silicon conforming to the pressure of my fist. It’s the best—and most realistic-looking—penis I’ve ever seen, to the point where touching it feels like an infidelity and I have some difficulty looking my boyfriend in the eye for a few hours afterward.

Due to the inherent NSFW-ness of an eight-inch silicon dildo, we can’t attach any images of them, so you’re just going to have to take my word on it regarding their quality. But if you have about $250 burning a hole in your pocket, you can purchase one of your very own from Sinthetics, the life-size silicon doll company Krivicke runs with his partner Bronwen Keller out of their loft and studio, a former illegal growhouse in L.A.’s

But we perfectly know how you guys are the worst in Army. Remember how you rapeed and did allmost worst things after our police or amrmy troops were send to Tahiti once. You may definitly have molested young soldiers one behind the other. I read somewhere, that a young army soldier committed suicide few years ago, not being able to see her mother s face on long run after his life change dramatically in his Army life.

Correct to say that they should behave well they are in leadership positions, but I never think that a man of Ranil W nature would behave so, he is well mannerd and the most respectful politician we hav ein the country today. Alone his tweet message contained no derogatory terms to Mr President.
The problem of President is, he is not even good enough to get on with the people in lanken metropoles, how can he then represent the country to the world. Each time, he travel sto anywhere, we clearly see the bugger only keeps on nodding his only. Lack of proper education is in fact not overlooked. The very same is seen in MR ‘s person too. Both are being misunderstood by foreign interviewers. But RW is conversant in both languages. Just to put his this way is a curse actually.

I tend to agree with Rtd. Lt. Reginald Shamal Perera. If the whole population was LGBT then there is no other option but for a pinky to become the ruler. Otherwise it should not be allowed.
      .

The reason is obvious. For an LGBT, that part of the anatomy that he is interested in is a lot more important than the whole world. It is no laughing matter. But that is how things stand for LGBT’s. They are really serious about it. Much more serious than we would be about some bodily orifice.
      ..
Imagine living in a state ruled by an LGBT government. If they declare war on another country, and you are part of the Army, then you would be making orifices in the bodies of your enemy, with your bayonet, for the sake of some bodily orifice of your ruler than fighting for the country. Surely, that is not something you are going to like.

        Edwin Rodrigo,

that is biological: We cant do anything against that. Did not you notice among the arabs. Most of the them are gay or bi. I am not int ot hte stuff, but I do have colleagues that are gay in my working environments. So long they would behave competent with their jobs, I dont care what their sexual orientation would be.
Also there are transgender people growing in Parkistan and India. Why should we as born buddhists to discriminate them. What on earth we the straight have iit to say about the others ? I think people should start looking at them in big picture.
That lady got appointed in Sabaragamuwa is doing well, even if she should b a transexual person. What matters at the end of the day is to respect all vibrant men and women then onl ywe can see it further.

      Rtd. Lt. Reginald Shamal Perera,

You may be right. “Pinkies” in the north are certainly not among those of the armed forces who prowl the villages at night in search of women.
Were they among those who were shown in videos, beating crawling female soldiers in training with sticks on their posteriors ?
They were probably not among the “Grease Yakkas” who terrorised villagers after the war.

Yes! The LGBT community and their supporters must look after their own interests. In assuming that the reference to butterflies by the President refers to homosexuality only solidifies the perception that Sri Lanka was run by a group of homosexuals under RW. On the long run this is a bad image painted on RW in the International sphere and we are not doing justice to RW in doing so. Just because western countries have “legalised” the union of homosexuality does not mean that its elite accepts that situation, in fact the homophobia among the western elites is at its highest. RW has used his good relationships with the western elite for the country such as getting back gsp+ status. It is a pity to see his valuable network being inadvertently destroyed by this kind of reaction.

Now that the barely disguised cat is out of the bag, the UNP must seriously re-consider offering someone seen as a butterfly as the presidential candidate. This is not because there is an inherent wrongness in being a butterfly but because malicious sections of the clergy might use this fact as yet another reason to bring the MS-MR crowd back in order to protect the already debased “culture”. Hopefully, someday Sri Lankans will be more enlightened and elect a mixed race homosexual like the Irish did.

Members of LGBT community must be rehabilitated mentally & physically to make them able to enjoy real natural taste of life that can be derived only through making love with opposite sex & let them enjoy the pride of parenthood.

Arousing humor through their behavior by anybody is natural & can’t be termed as derogatory but failure to rehabilitate them is a shame for the society.

A survey must be done to find the possibly suffering spouses of such people who is unable to part them due to social attitudes.

All the schools must be made mixed schools so as to accommodate early teenagers to make sexual experiments with opposite sex, that will be helpful to minimize making LGBTens.

The electect people in parliament can take part in the decisions that affect the way their community is democratic society which is a group of people who make decisions together, with each vote counting equally. Where the people can take part in the decisions that affect the way their community is run. Democracy must be built through open societies that share information.

      thrishu ,

” Is dismissing the bank robbers and totalitarian Ranil legal or not ?”
Can Madushanka dismiss Wele Suda and be called legal ? The main
question for a reasonable mind is not , who sacked whom ? Whether
the action was right or wrong , legal or illegal ? For that , go to the
19th amendment and find out where the law stands ! The law is against
the dismissal . How then did this happen ? This happened because the
Police, Navy , Air force and Army are under the command of the
President ! This is the simple Maths and everything else is built up on
this calculation . So , in a sense THIS IS AN INVISIBLE ARMY COUP !
Not one robber removed , another robber , possibly with a reputed gang
is moved in . So this is more than one man Ranil and U N P . Widen your
      horizon !

We have been doing so well compared to many other nations, when it comes to LGBTQI issues, and have been living peacefully with no hate incidents. Why are politicians like Sirisena so hell bent of pushing his agenda, at the risk of taking the country to an ugly direction, where it could result in attacks on our Sri Lankans citizens? Take a look at the US, Trump has divided it with attacks on colored people, Muslims, Mexicans, and he sides with white nationalists:

“The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the nation’s premier civil rights organization, issued the following statement regarding a new study showing a rise in hate crimes last year.

According to new data “ hate crime totals for the 10 largest cities rose for four straight years to the highest level in a decade.” The NAACP believes there is a direct relationship between the rise in hate crimes exemplified by the continual #LivingWhileBlack incidents and other reported crimes and President Donald J. Trump’s xenophobic rhetoric and racist policies.

The report shows that racially-motivated crimes comprise nearly 60 percent of overall crimes, and African Americans remain the most targeted group. Overall “Anti-Black, anti-Semitic, anti-gay and anti-Latino were the most common type of hate crimes,” said the study authors.”

No leader who genuinely loves his country, will divide it, for his own selfish agenda.

  • 2
    0

Stop with the hypocrisy. Married leaders who are straight are being cads, having adulterous affairs, and womanizing, and Sirisena is trying to imply someone he does not like is gay? Sirisena has no business looking into other people’s private business and bedrooms. Perhaps he should focus on Sri Lankans being killed or attacked because they looked at someone else’s ex girlfriend, or because someone objected to a filthy politician and there thugs putting their hands on their female companion.
