Sirisena Stuck With His Political Partners, Pals And Progeny

By H. L. D. Mahindapala

Offering changes to the status quo always has a charm that appeals to people at all levels. Changes are also inevitable. That is the eternal law. But change for what? And how far can changes go to make a real difference? These are nagging questions that make people believe that the more you change the more it remains the same. The perennial hope is change for the better. But does change always change for the better? The vaunted “Arab Spring” is one recent example where change did not change for the good of the people.

There is, no doubt, that the overwhelming mood was for change on January 8 – no matter what the change would bring. So when Maithripala Sirisena sailed home on the winds of change there was a sense of great relief. He even set a time table. According to his Manifesto Sri Lanka was going to be transformed into an “ideal country” in six years.

Too idealistic? Too far-fetched? Yep. It was easy to draw up plans in a manifesto. But events do not run according to plans of men and mice. The most unexpected forces of man and nature can throw the best laid plans off course. Vellupillai Prabhakaran learnt this the hard way when the tsunami whacked him flat at a time when he was all set to launch his final offensive on the Sri Lanka forces. He admitted this in his annual November speech.

In the very first days President Sirisena is beginning to feel the heat of events exploding around him. After quitting the Mahinda Rajapaksa saying that it is full of corrupt men and practices he is now forced to accept the very same men and women to maintain his power in Parliament. The 50-year-old man who climbed a roof to protest against the inclusion of Sajin Vass Gunawardena in the government benches seems to know the contents of the Manifesto more than President Sirisena.

Maithripala DahamCloser to home things got worse. President Sirisena’s son, Daham, marched into  a night club near Race Course, surrounded and protected by 40 personnel from Presidential Security Division (PSD) giving the lie to the “yaha-palanaya” promised by the father. This happened at a time when even the security of ministers has been withdrawn. But the son, exercising his father’s power, has decided to run around town with 40 PSD men. His son, it seems, is determined to ruin his father’s “yaha-pala-naya” by turning it into a “yaka-gay-pala-naya”!

Equally worse, is the inexplicable act of the new Finance Minister, Ravi Karunanayake, fixing of the date of the mini-budget to be delivered on January 29 – the same date that had been fixed in last November by the Supreme Court for the hearing of his case of Rs.390 million received from billionaire Raja Rajaratnam, the LTTE financier who is in jail in New York for insider trading. Is this going to be the sign of law order that is due to come under President Sirisena’s “yaha-pala-naya”?

Then comes the latest news which states that Chandrika Kumaratunga is to be appointed as the head of the SLFP. This is a powerful post at the peak of the ruling party. She is going to be the highest symbol of the new regime that has pledged solemnly before the people not to minimize but to eliminate bribery, corruption and thuggery. But with her record of being convicted by the courts and condemned by serious accusations known to all who had read Victor Ivan’s book on her, how can President Sirisena let her take over the reins of the SLFP? What is the message sent to the people by her appointment? President Sirisena won on the promise of bringing in a “when-a-sak” (difference). What difference does it make when Kumaratunga is re-installed as the head of the SLFP? Whose brilliant brainchild was it to bring cow dung from Horagolla and place it as an adornment on the presidential chair of the SLFP?

President Sirisena has., however, gained some brownie points in appointing Dr. Jayantha Dhanapala as a presidential advisor. The plus side of this appointment is that it could please the Indians and the West. He is the blue-eyed boy of both. Also coming from the NGO lobby it can gain some applause from this claque hired by the West. There is also the flip side of this appointment which is rather ominous. The nation remember him as the father of the failed P-TOMS which was drafted with the help of two leading pro-Tiger Tamils in the Tamil Diaspora – namely, Ram Manickalingam and his brother-in-law, Dr. M. Sornarajah, a law lecturer in the Singapore University. The overall plan in Chandrika Kumaratunga’s P-TOMS was to hand over the north and the east to Prabhakaran with powers to run the administration with a Tiger majority for “ten years without an election”. The fingerprints of Manickalingam and Sornarajah were all over the P-TOMS proposals, though Dhanapala denied it.

It is this background that makes Dhanapala’s appointment as a Presidential advisor ominously significant. Practically, all the appointments so far brings together all the P-TOMS-ians, CFA-ists– i.e., Chandrika Kumaratunga, Ranil Wickremesinghe, and Jayantha Dhanapala et al — under one roof, working together to revive a revised version of both P-TOMS and CFA. If Chandrika Kumaratunga has brought back Dhanapala into the new administration Ranil Wickremesinghe has re-introduced Austin (My Belly is White) Fernando, was instrumental, along with his master, Wickremesinghe, in handing over the north and the east to the LTTE in the hurriedly drafted CFA with the assistance of the Indians but without consulting the Commanders of the Security Forces, Parliament, UNP, the people or the President, the Commander-in-Chief.  These are also darlings of the West and India. It’s a case of birds of a feather flocking together. Once these heavy-weights gang up they can easily ride over President Sirisena and make him negate the post-Nandikadal gains achieved by president Mahinda Rajapaksa.

President Sirisena has so far not shown any strength, power or initiative to hold his own against the Wickremesinghe and Kumaratunga combination ruling the Coalition so far. The majority of UNP Ministers in his Cabinet indicates that the UNP has had its way. It has all the hall marks of a Cabinet nominated by Wickremesinghe than by President Sirisena. The appointment of Ravi Karunanayake to the key post of Finance Minister proves that Wickremesinghe has given a plum job to his loyal, West-leaning, IDU partner, despite his questionable financial dealings with the pro-LTTE billionaire, Raja Rajaratnam. These two English-speaking power-brokers (CBK and RW) who are behind the victory of Sinhala-speaking Sirisena will have the upper hand in determining policy.

The future does not shine like the sun at dawn of January 9th , 2015. It is already looking more like 5 past 12 noon. Promises have stalled. The new ministers are same old hacks who failed earlier. Chandrika Kumaratunga, the most disastrous failure in the post-independent era, has been brought back through the back-door to a seat of power in the SLFP. Wickremesinghe is whipping the back of Sirisena, metaphorically speaking. Worst is, at a time when Mahinda Rajapaksa has withdrawn from office, giving up power, Sirisena has not gained from it because he is handing state powers to an unelected prime minister and political power to rejected “Chouri Rajiini” noted for her corruption and abuses of power.

Expectations of a pure regime was raised sky-high during the election. But those expectations are sliding down the slippery slope daily. The abuse of power has begun in the highest of places – the President’s home. If, for instance, Daham Sirisena has the uncontrolled and unauthorized power to wade into night clubs with 40 PSDs who wields power in the Sirisena’s regime? The father or the son? It can be assumed that the father would have put the son in his place after the “Malu – Malu” incident in Pasikudah beach where Daham Sirisena assaulted a DIG’s son peacefully enjoying his holiday with family and friends. That incident was swept under the carpet.

The “Malu-Malu” incident happened when his father was only the Minister of Health. The son’s power seems to have grown in proportion to his father’s power. The Race Course incident, which happened after the father became President, makes it clear that son has more power than the father for him to run around town with 40 PSDs running behind him. Who is paying overtime and other expenses (like petrol for the many vehicles carrying PSDs) involved in massaging the arrogant ego of a notorious thug like Daham? Or is Ada ham? The people in the café, sensing trouble, walked out. So what has Mr. “Clean” President done about it other than turning a blind eye? If the son can usurp the powers of his father why can’t the thugs and “kudu kara-yas” also take the law into their hands?

Of course, it can be argued that these are teething troubles of early days. President Sirisena can get away with it because the feel-good factor of the honeymoon period is still there. But how long will that last?

In the meantime, can the President clarify as to who is running the country? Is it the father? Or the son with 40 PSDs?

Quite right on one thing, Mr. Mahindapala: that the 100 day plan to transform Sri Lanka is too ambitious and the current government needs more time, and NOT another General Election.

Sri Lanka has had TOO MANY ELECTIONS that distract from the main issues and once the 100 day program is implemented the current government should remain until its term ends in April 2016 – as the Election Commissioner had noted.

It would be best for the COUNTRY if the current government were to stay till the end of its term in April 2016 –AFTER implementing the 100 day program– to make sure it works and is sustainable and fix any glitches.

Elections are a circus and distract from addressing the long term pressing issues like TRANSITIONAL JUSTICE and cleaning up the ROTTEN POLITICAL CULTURE that need to be undertaken over a year, rather than in 3 months. The current turn of bi-partisan cooperation between SLFP and UNP is an OPPORTUNITY not to be missed. This is the true meaning of DEMOCRACY – multiple voices and groups working together to clean up political culture end ensure justice and good governance and power sharing for ALL – particularly minorities.

It would be good if the current MY3-Ranil regime were to reconsider its pledge to have a general election this year in April, and instead focus on consolidating good governance and transitional justice in Sri Lanka until 2016.

Good governance and transitional justice however cannot be done in 3 months and I believe that the general public and civil society of Lanka, would support the current govt of My3 and Ranil to run its full term till April 2016, IF it does deliver on its 100 day program FIRST. This would be in the best interest of Sri Lanka and its currnet democratic transition.

Mr Mahindapala, YOUR credibility is seriously in question. You have been a boot licking grovelling sycophant of the former Dictator of Sri Lanka. Like all his asinine, emotional, irrational supporters, whose grey matter has been either handed out in rationed quantities at birth or has diminished in the process of servility, you too are a prime example of a defeated supporter of a thug from Medamoolana, suffering from a Sour Grapes Syndrome. I suggest you take your worthless, verbal babbling to a kala paththarey where it would acquire some relevance, based on morons like you and other MR supporters with limited intellect reading it. If you were a rational man, you would not write such one sided garbage in the face of all the grievous, heinous crimes of the Rajapaksa clan.

MahindaPALA and Dayan Jayathilaka are ziamesian twins to see things to the manner their pens allow them even after the process of all these high profile abuses of MR is just started. Alone the manner the current regime started it putting stop to high costs is commedable. They have to stick on to their promises such as pay hikes, price reduction of daily essentials, gas, petrol – not forgetting all levels of corruption cases to be addressed impartially etc. I have no doubt, the young politicians like Sujeewa Senasinghe, Dr. Harsha Silva, Ajith Perera and the few will lead showing example to the many – no doubt I have in my mind about their talents and harding working non-abusive nature.

One might not agree with the now discredited HLDM but his right to expose and criticise must not be denied. That is a precious democratic right we must all encourage and protect.

President Sirisena must answer the anger of the public on the alleged behaviour of his son. To be fair, I also heard the whole story was a fabrication – using pictures of Namal’s security retinue. The President must keep his promise to the country he will do away with this unnecessary and costly security to members of the families of political leaders – an aberration of recent years.
There is much President Sirisena can show the country by example in the present and the future – largely because his record as Minister too is not flawless. He was accused of being behind the importation of sub-standard drugs as Health Minister. Stories of huge corruption during his days in charge of the Mahaweli are still there in “files” How this poor son of a poor cultivator, with hardly any resources at all, came to be the owner of huge Rice Mills, Hotels etc. after he became a Minister are all matters the public find curious.
He was also Chairman of several “Shape” Committees (like the one that declared kudu Mervin innocent of harassing a Muslim Samurdi official)
under his notorious boss – now consigned to disgrace.

The long and short of my point is if you conduct yourself in political life honestly and honourably you have little to worry. The Rajapakses tried to make this a Police State merely to avoid this. It is in President Sirisena’s interest to do the right thing because people, at many levels, including the now invigorated media, are watching.

You M….pala still in a dream world that your masters would return soon and spreading false stories. Did you verify whether President’s son, Daham, visited the night club with so many securit men? Do not try to mislead the public.
There are various investigations on corruption have commenced and lot more being unearthed daily
And people are wondering whether the country was governed by normal Srilankans or bandits or pirates from another country. If MR and his family had even a little bit of love for the coubtry they could have not behaved un this manner.
God has saved the country atleast at this critical moment. There are the stooges and cronies trying to come unto the camp of the President but they would not be spared if any charges are proved.

The best advice to M….pala is to not write these stupid articles and be a spectator of the events to unfold.

Mahindapala – Whoever or whatever “Sirisena is stuck with” is a hell of a lot better than being stuck with the insidious racketeers and murderers that you are so in love with.

Then you say that “President Sirisena has so far not shown any strength, power or initiative …”, but he sure had enough “strength and power” to tell the Rajapakses to stuff it and then oppose them, so don’t mistake kindness for weakness or judge others by your own pathetically low standards.

Don’t forget that your own sordid record is well known by most readers, so put a sock in it and fade away into oblivion without boring us with your tripe.

    ———————–

Hello Sentimental Ruhunu Puthua HLDM ,

You are defending your pal MR and his regime at any cost using dirty tricks. Do you think you are advocating for peace stability and progress of Sri Lanka ? 67 years after independence still you as a patriotic Sri Lankan and a dual citizen I guess , have not learnt enough lessons. What have you learnt in Australia all these years ?

Real “Wenesak” in SL has happened .MR recieved votes from all the 9 provinces. So was MS. It was not a partisan voting. Even Sumanadasa is proud to say he has saved Mother Lanka. When will you ?

Atleast now you can change for the better and talk about united SL with equal treatment of all the communities. SWRD Bandaranayake who uplifted the Buddhist Sinhalese Community was a highly intelligent man who called Chelva and made the BC pact. SWRD was a statesman. But it was unfortunate for SL. Not only the pact was aborted he was killed later.

This is the right time for you to re visit the BC Pact and educate the majority of the citizens who are innocent. Instead of that you are slinging mud at Jayantha Dhanapala for his sincere involvement with P Tom.

Do not create unnecessary problems for Mother Lanka. Instead be rational and truthful and hel SL to solver her problems.

    Dear Mr. President Sir,

On 4th June 1979, Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlins the son of a woman from Ghana and a man from Scotland seized power in the West African country known as Ghana.

Ghana was ruled by successive Africans from its time of independence in 1957. Ghana too was invaded and ruled by the Portugese, the Dutch and the British about the same timelines that Sri Lanka was invaded and ruled, except that the Porthgese invaded Ghana in 1481. Ghana is rich in Gold, Diamonds, Cocoa, Oil and Natural Gas.

Till Jerry Rawlings seized power even though it had best education systems, Ghana produced the most scholars, it had huge deposits of natural reserves but the lives of the poor, which was 98 percent of the population, remained extremely poor. The wealth of the country was for the benefit of the rulers, crooked business community, Lebanese merchants and for their families.

Jerry Rawlins was only 31 years of age at the time he seized power.

Jerry Rawlings changed all that. He jailed and executed the known corrupt. He did not waste his time. On one Friday afternoon in July 1979, he lined up every living ex prime minister and made them face them the firing squad. The so called civilized world screamed but the so called civilized screamers never fed the poor of Ghana.

Then Jerry Rawlins re-built Ghana. When he wanted to leave office after four years the poor cried and wanted him to contest the elections. He did as civilian and won overwhelmingly. And he built Ghana to be one of the strongest economies in Africa. He left after two – four year terms.

We need a Jerry Rawlins in Sri Lanka. The corrupt politicians, however big and whoever they may be, should be tried and got rid of for good.

Soma, my mother’s poor house maid who worked for her for the past 25 years during the periods of various governments got poorer and poorer. Even though she is paid 40,000 rupees a month, given health care, travelling etc., now fifty years of age she is frail and has nothing to show for her life. My mother built her a two bedroomed house, with kitchen and a living room having tiled floors, doors and windows of Kos, a new modern bathroom with shower and commode. Being a good Buddhist, having been once very poor, my mother gave as present a place for Soma to call her own. My mother spent four hundred fifty thousand rupees to build Soma’s house – money she saved when her children who work and live abroad send her little money to buy medicines, food and clothing. At least Soma got something to show for her life. Soma is lucky.

Where did Namal Rajapaksa get money to lead the super luxury life of his. Rohitha and Yoshita and Shiranthi, and thousands of Rajapaksa relatives and hangers on had a life unbelievable for Sri Lankans. All these came from the sweat of millions of poor Somas.

Come o n General Fonseka you are one hope Sri Lanka has. You rid Sri Lanka of the terrorists. It is time you rid the country of economic terrorists.

Daham will not be able to run amok for long. Chandrika did not not put MY3 for the love of him but she knows he can be got rid of with ease. Chandrika will reclaim the leadersship of SLFP for herself soon, then pass it and presidency on to her son/daughter. Remember SLFP belongs to The Family, and who says nepotism is a bad thing!

Even if CBK would not pass it to her offsprings – the party s respect should go to that family. In that way only the good being done by Bandaranakaykes will not be erorded even if Rajapkshes made every effort to do so. If CBK herself did not mediate last weeks lanken change – chasing out the man in power – nothing would have been possible. May be her second terms was also not clean – but the gaps of corruption of MR terms have sky-earth diffrence. Any politicians are blamed for their terms -except some countries in Europe. Germany s Merkel won her 3 rd term since their mechanisms are also tiptop compared to those of other neigbouring countries. And I really dont think CBK s children would agree with any kind of active politics in the home country.

    – People with proven track records of failure, corruption and mismanagement are leading us now.

    – Adha-ham carries out yaha paalanaya in fine fashion on the backs of the tax payers.

    – A person accused of money laundering is our finance minister that too, through Raj Rajaratnam who is a known LTTE financier

    – Just because this writer exposes the wrongs of this joke of an administration, albeit, half of them appointed unconstitutionally, it does not mean he is trying to right the wrongs of the previous regime

    – people accepted that President Rajapaksha is not perfect but yet he was the best man for the job and still is but do these yaha paalana fellows admit that their beloved CBK, Ranil and MY3 are not perfect either and infact far from it? Well, thats the difference!

    – And above all, people with proven track records of accommodating terrorists and bending back wards to them just to gain power is nothing but a weak, subservient, undeserving bunch of treacherous rascals who has no business governing our nation.

NATION FIRST. ITS SECURITY FIRST. ITS TERRITORIAL INTEGRITY AND UNITY FIRST. NOT UNP OR SLFP OF TNA OR WHATEVER!

We will all pay for this folly dearly, soon!

Thanking you for writing this article and we can feel how YAHAPALANAYA is going to work. Definitely, it is going to be a big CHANGE in Sri Lanka, near future. Things you have mention here about Sirisena’s son is 100% correct and he was doing those kind of dirty thing even before his farther came to power as president. Chandrika Bandaranayaka was the most corrupted and dirtiest president selected by Sri Lankan and again she is planning to come to power using back door of Sirisena’s house. That is the typical behaviour of that dirty character. Soon we will see some other characters like Sanath Gunathilaka, Roni Pieris, Tara De Mel ect.. will be enter to the seen and start grabbing public funds to their pocket. Don’t have to talk about the future of Sirisena. He will be much happy if he can protect his dirty Sarong(Lungi) once he finish his term. Some how, very soon chandrika will kick every ones butt and achieve her target. Then she can steel billion of Rs from public funds as she done during her regime (Read Victor Ivan’s Chura Rajini)and buy more houses close to Themes river to live with her children and grand children in her very very old age. Thanks to those Facebook rats who vote for serisena to CHANGE and YAHAPALANAYA.
I don’t understand why some people who write comments here are so afraid on Mr Mahindapala when he write a true story with proof. Yes, People don’t like to hear real truth. But crude lie is easy to digest.

Offering changes to the status quo always has a charm that appeals to people at all levels. Changes are also inevitable. That is the eternal law. But change for what

*** Change for the better you idiot. Sri Lanka couldnt have got any lower than it did under Mahintha. There is only one way and that is UP from the Grave. If Sri Lanka wants to get back into the League of Civilised Nations she has to do the following.

    Treat its own citizens equally
    Respect Rule of Law.
    Stop behaving like Thugs.
Stop the Gun Culture ( Hit Squads to kill those who challenge like killing Lasantha )
Stop Looting the Nation like MR. Gotha ( The White House in the heart of the City) Basil who has reached ( or he thinks he has )a Nation of No return but he will be extradited or put in an Americam Jail and he deserves Guantanamo.
    Stop the White Van Syndrome.

There are many more which will addressed by a proper TRC not the one set up by MR which was Do it But Deny it. DBD

Sri Lanka has made a welcome change and let us hope with the grace of God we can change this 2500 year old history of hatred into something positive so that all the future generations ( Sinhalese , Tamils , Muslims and Christians ) can enjoy the Richness Sri Lanka has in abundance as Bhumiputras.

At this juncture one must look at the positive aspects of this article, and say this is the sort of reporting the country missed during the Rajapaksa regime. Consequently, the people of the country suffered many losses. Maybe you too were bribed with interest free car permits… It must have been very difficult for you to hide and distort the truth during the Premadasa and the Rajapaksa era. However,it was obvious to all and sundry as to who was buttering your bread. As a result you lost credibility with the senior citizens of SL and the expats living abroad.
