Sirisena Succumbs To Pressure: Ranatunga’s Nominations Accepted & MR To Contest From UPFA

After extensive negotiations, the United People’s Freedom Alliance has finally agreed to give nominations to Western Province Chief minister Prasanna Ranatunga to contest from the UPFA.

With the assurance that the former Chief Minister will be allowed to contest the election, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has agreed to sign nomination papars to contest the election under the UPFA alliance.

Mahinda VParty sources said the former President would sign the nomination papers soon.

Nominations of the United People’s Freedom Alliance hit a fresh snag last evening when President Maithripala Sirisena opposed giving nomination to 10 stalwarts of the pro – Rajapaksa camp, including Western Province Chief Minister Prasanna Ranatunga.

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa had insisted that all members of the “Abhayaramaya cabal“, including Ranatunga, should be given nomination from the UPFA to contest the election. Rajapaksa said he would pull out of the UPFA and contest from a separate front if the UPFA failed to meet his demand.

Signing of the UPFA nominations is presently underway at Mahaveli Centre, Colombo 07.

What the heck is this unrelenting, unmitigated nonsense? One day they say he will, the next he won’t. One day the slime-gang are obstructed, the next they aren’t.

Why does the media (including CT) keep publishing unsubstantiated crap like this to titillate the 6.2M on one day and the 5.7M the next?

    Why all the drama, pray?

Why doesn’t everyone just wait for the nominations to be filed and then analyse things the way they stack up?

At that point, we will all know whether the Medamulana Hora/Kapatiraja will try his luck again, and if so under what banner…. equally, we will all know whether the incumbent President has the courage and back-bone to stick with his convictions to deny endorsing candidates of unsound character for a shot at entering the legislative assembly.

Looks like Ali Baba & 40 thieves have in fact seized both the initiative and control of the corrupt SLFP.

This is a direct consequence of being weak when dealing with bullies with criminal track records. Such as the defeated dictator from Hambantota.

Both MY3 and Ranil are responsible. For prioritizing party politics before our beautiful country and her future.

They had 150 days to drag most of these people into Welikada Jail. They did not have the courage of their convictions to do so. Instead they oiled the wheels of justice with customary politics. In truly corrupt Sri Lankan style.

Now we see the results. Sri Lanka will pay the price for 25 years to come. Despite the 8th January revolution.

What we lacked was a mix of Fonseka’s backbone and JVP’s discipline. Ali Baba would have run for cover. With his tail between his legs.

Congratulations Sri Lanka. You got what you deserve. Once again!

      Cheers!

          Mine too!

Sri Lanka should be invaded by India or China or both and divide Sri Lanka between the two countries. All the Politicians including the Hambanta Kabaragoya and the Polonnaru Slimy Dick should be stripped naked and made to run the lenghth of the country from Devundara to Pedurutuduwa.

After that a huge glass bottle should be made and the politicians bottled in vinegar and sent to the museum for exhibition.

Our politicians do not deserve any kindness.

Spot on ! They are all working hands in gloves to
refuse justice and destroy fair play.JVP can not
wash its hands off responsibility. The best way

Drama, Political coup, Buying and Selling of politicians are nothing new to Srilanka. The truth is that Srilanka is a land of corruption and none of the politicians are honest to the people of the land or nation. It is the reason Srilanka remains as a land of blood rather than land of milk.

The sad part of all these comments is that no one thinks the UNP can win which should be the case if MR is seen to be so unpopular!! If this alone does not send Ranil into disgraced retirement, nothing will.

Face the political reality – all of you commenters

The call for Rajapakse and the resurgent support for him is deafening – that is by the average Sri Lankan – you must meet one someday.

Mithreepala has realized soon enough the arrogance and dismissive state of Ranil – a man who does not endear himself even to his closest associates. Mahinda would have contested – one way or the other – and the vote will be split giving Ranil a grip that he does not deserve. In the absence of his savior, MS, Ranil’s inability to win or to sustain power has become very evident.

MR’s war victory – try as you might to belittle it – was heroic and has changed all our lives infinitely. International news on a daily basis shows us where we could have been with sectarian and indiscriminate killing of a barbaric nature. He did what he had to do when others were cowling under tables and paying lip service to the diaspora.

So you all arm chair browsers can be ruffled but what was obviously going to happen has happened, the real voter will throng towards MR and the UPLF victory is assured

Sadly, I think you may be right. The President has seen fit to protect his party over his Country and in ways….himself.

MR has been showered with praise, adulation and love from all people of this Country for ending the war (perhaps not the Tamils).

What did he choose to do with this immense power he received in 2009? Instead of using it judiciously, he chose to marginalize the minorities, isolate us internationally, run this country with a pack of thieves and inept hero-worshippers and family jokers, and pour immense amounts of money into his personal coffers.

If he has been a statesman, behaved magnanimously in victory, united societies and built a competent administration with strict adherence to the rule of law, he would have had a committed supporter in me.

I can only hope that the “average Sri Lankan” possesses the two brain cells to rub together and reach the conclusion I have.

Historic reality of Sri Lankan politics is that the voters tend to elect all such `criminals’. This is the reason for leaders of parties to give nominations to such people.

I think the voters have a bigger responsibility than the politicians during the elections to reject them. Merely accusing party leaders is not enough.

You should have learned from the American Soldier, Brigadier General Anthony C. McAuliffe, who said “Nuts” to the Germans when he was surrounded in the Black Forest -Battle of the Bulge, during World War 2.

      Anthony McAuliffe

According to various accounts from those present, when McAuliffe was given the German message, he read it, crumpled it into a ball, threw it in a wastepaper basket, and muttered, “Aw, nuts”. The officers in McAuliffe’s command post were trying and failing to come up with suitable language for an official reply when Lt. Col. Harry Kinnard suggested that McAuliffe’s first response summed up the situation pretty well, and the others agreed. The official reply was typed and delivered by Colonel Joseph Harper, commanding the 327th Glider Infantry, to the German delegation. It was as follows:

      To the German Commander.

      NUTS!

All this uncertainty and doubt don’t do either Maithripala or the country any good. Going by recent reports it appears that Maithri either lacks the courage of his promised convictions, or there is some intricate game being played at the expense of us all.

Hopefully, whatever the answer is, MR and his diabolical flock of supporters will be trounced at the election.

The Average IQ of thoise who voted for Mahinda Rajapaks is 65, in a country where the average IQ is 79.

Those whose IQs fall below 70 are classified as Imbeciles, Morons and Idiots.

Imbecile was a medical category of people with moderate to severe intellectual disability, as well as a type of criminal.[1][2] The term arises from the Latin word imbecillus, meaning weak, or weak-minded. It included people with an IQ of 26–50, between “moron” (IQ of 51–70) and “idiot” (IQ of 0–25).

Has My3, forgotten all the promises he made to the people who voted for him. It looks like a real joke on them. How do we trust any of these politicians? We had very high hopes on My3 and it looks these are being shattered.
Again, campaigning, voting and back to same old story of being cheated. The whole thing is stinking.

Its a question of who is behind whom, not just the numbers.

MY3 has 6.2 million while Mara has 5.6 million, but MY3’s voters are mostly pacifist and educated while Mara’s ones are die hard, deranged, unintelligent, racist.

Hence there is more noise made by Maras supporters. Its only after the polls we will know for sure.

Ranil’s strategy planning seem to be up the shit creek nowadays.

Ranil challenged Rajapaksa only a couple of months ago to come and fight face to face for the Premier job.

Cousin, Whisky Madam said she will come too, if Rajapaksa comes.

Perhaps the cousins work in tandem.

Ranil’s plan was to force Rajapaksa out of the SLFP and get him to contest on a breakaway group Ticket.

Thereby hoping to get the SLFP under the Whisky Madam and form a Government with the MPs of the Madam’s Faction.

But the Madam was booed out at the very first public outing with the President.

    How sad,

If Rajapaksa broke away , the Madam would have had only SB , Arjuna Ranatunga, and Samarasinghe , and Dr Mervyn Silva.

    Sira is no dill .

Otherwise how can he get the plum job with Elites money?.

Sira didn’t want to go down in SL History as the destroyer of the SLFP the only party which helped the great majority to break the shackles and start getting their rightful place in their own country.

Seelawathi. I do not want MR to come back. But for the sake of your argument, if MR lost and should not come back, what about RW? He too lost an election while in power. Not only that, RW lost multiple elections before and after his tenure as PM. My view is that both MR and RW should be sent home and new leaders appointed.

A man’s honour is his word, in most parts of the world.

In Sri Lanka however it seems that the more you are able to change your word the better you are at being a politician.

Sri Lankan politicians don’t have policy that they stand on and direct our country in a positive direction. Instead they look at what is beneficial to their interests. The common man can go to hell.

Its not only Mara that is guilty of this. Almost all presently active politicians are equally guilty, except the JVP.

But funny enough no body seems to remember that we have a solid alternative to these clowns. We should be happy that JVP exists.

Just look around and take note. Since last year the JVP have been decisive in their actions and their policy has been very transparent, unbiased, and secular. None of their leaders have any stains of fraud or deception. Its time to give them a chance. Its time, high time we put an end to this madness.

Many people, in particular UNPers, were hoping that there will be a split in the SLFP/UPFA alliance that would pave the way for Ranil’s party to cash on the split and come back to power. Events have now shown that this was not to be and Sri Lanka will continue to maintain a healthy two-party system like what you find in US, UK and Australia.

Like in US, UK, and Australia, Sri Lanka has developed a two-party system since the 1956 election. Rightists UNP and the left-centre SLFP led-Coalition had continued to rule Sri Lanka alternatively. When one party failed, Sri Lankans had the alternative of the other. Like in UK and Australia, we had an arrangement akin to shadow cabinet of the other main party waiting to form the next government in case the ruling party got rejected by the people at the next election.

Fortunately, it appears that saner counsel had prevailed among the SLFP/UPFA leaders and they have agreed to bury the hatchet for the good of the party which is in fact good for the democratic traditions of the country. It must also be noted that the two main parties of Sri Lanka joined hands at all times when the country faced revolts. The two JVP insurrections were rejected by the two main parties. The first JVP insurrection came when SLFP was in power and the second happened when UNP was in power. On both occasions the other party supported the actions of the party in power. Similarly, both UNP and SLFP were against the war waged by the LTTE over three decades.

Despite all the adverse comments by many readers here, let UNP and UPFA test their strengths among the voters. Let the voters decide for themselves who they want to choose to run the country for the next five years. The fact there are only two major parties in the contest with no other major party in the field means there will be a definite outcome for either one or other of the major parties. There is no likelihood of a hung parliament and resultant instability. If Rajapakse and his clan are corrupt, let the people decide that issue. In my opinion, all Sri Lankan politicians are corrupt and there is no difference in that between UNP and SLFP. If Rajapakse and his clan are accused of corruption in their nine year rule, the same can be said of UNP in its 100 day rule with the biggest Central Bank bond scam beginning to unravel. The fact is all these bastards are corrupt. There is no question of choosing the less corrupt.

Yet, there is ONE more chance and some hope of PEOPLE understanding the whole truth of this “CASINO” type gambling by the major political parties and chase them away on August 17th and bring an entirely NEW breed who does what it says. Yahapalanaya that spread throughout Sri Lanka has now turned out to be a disruption force and the real Master at the helm showing he is soft as a jelly fish and has impacted on real life.
