Sirisena Takes A Step Back: Contemplates Withdrawal Of Gazette Dissolving Parliament, But Still ‘No’ To Ranil

Fearing an unfavorable ruling by the Supreme Court on the gazette dissolving Parliament, President Maithripala Sirisena has informed UNP party leaders last night that he was willing to withdraw the gazette dissolving Parliament.

Sirisena

Sources close to Sirisena said he was likely to withdraw the gazette on Monday, before the Supreme Court begins the hearing of the petitions against the dissolution of Parliament. Chief Justice Nalin Perera has appointed a seven bench judge to hear the case which will be taken up next week.

“At the meeting last night, the President also said he would not dissolve or prologue Parliament, “Tamil Progressive Alliance leader Mano Ganesan, who represented the UNF at the meeting, said.

UNP Chairman Kabir Hashim, Lakshman Kiriella, General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, Patali Champika Ranawaka, Rajitha Senaratne, Mano Ganesan, Rishad Bathiudeen and Rauff Hakeem attended the meeting representing the United National Front. Ousted Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe did not attend the meeting.

Ganesan, commenting on the discussion with the President last night, also added that Sirisena “informally” admitted that his chosen Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa did not have a majority in Parliament. “He also admitted that the UNF commanded the support of a majority in Parliament.”

In another key development, Sirisena had been critical of the behavior of UPFA and SLPP MPs in Parliament, saying he had “nothing to do” with them.

Speaking to a group of journalists after the meeting, UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said the meeting was positive.

He added that both parties discuss their concerns and attempted to arrive at a solution. All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC) leader Rishad Bathiudeen also confirmed that the meeting ended without a final decision, but added that they would meet Sirisena again over the weekend.

Sirisena, however, has reiterated that he will not reappoint UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe as Prime Minister. He said he was willing to appoint any other MP of the UNP in the position. “The discussion virtually came to a halt when the President made that remark,” Ganesan explained.

However, it is learnt that the UNP MPs will meet Sirisena again, on Monday, with a fresh set of proposals of resolving the crisis.

    Dear Colombo Telegraph,
    .
Please correct the obvious typo in this sentence at the end of the article:
    .
“Sirisena, however, has reiterated that he will reappoint UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe as Prime Minister.”
    .
    Please insert “n-o-t”
    .
I worked so hard to get My3 elected. I had faith in him, not in Ranil. Now I want to see Ranil as Prime Minister for just one week at least.. Is it only he who has a right to be petulant?

      Persons or names don’t matter.
President should not be allowed to set a bad precedent by letting him deviate from the practice and tradition of consistently, concertedly and collaboratively select the Leader of ANY political party which receives the majority of seats in the Parliament, as the Prime Minister.
Our Parliament, which is based on West Minister System has established traditions and rules that had been followed a very long time.
I don’t see any reason to endorse President’s personal preferences which undermines people’s right to elect a Parliament of their choice. If he is allowed in this instance, then ALL FUTURE LEADERS OF POLITICAL PARTIES will have to CUT DEALS with future Presidents too, in order to be selected as the Prime Minister and also to avoid subordinates from being selected as Prime Ministers at whims and fancies of future Presidents.

Need of the hour is to appoint a tution master to SIRISENA, since I think that is obviously the most important thing not wasting our time.

We must not accept any low level statements being made by an uneducated person in president’s seat anymore. It is too much. almost 5 weeks passed, since his illegal and unconstitutional behaviour brought the country/nation into irrepairable situation. We are already downgraded by world bodies that the nation is no better to any other countries with affinities to high crimes. Alone the brawl sponsored by some vicious MPs within the parliament sent the message across, how unlawful some of our law makers are upto react.

      Or
see any speedy ways how we can get rid of SIRISENA from being president ASAP.

The island.lk is quick to blame LTTE for the killing of two cops in the East.
Well sensational stories especially with commission and omission do sell more papers however do not help dig out truth.

Sirisena, Mahinda, Dr Gota, ………………… need a good ethnic riot at the moment for their survival and diversion.

With no evidence Island believes LTTE committed the gruesome murder.
If its own fake news Shamindra Ferdinando stops recycling his old propaganda materials the English speaking chattering classes would stop supporting Mahinda.

Being a blatant Sinhala/Buddhist ultra nationalist Shamindra Ferdinando believes he is doing a great service to the country on the contrary he is also another curse befell on this island among many others.

        “ethnic riot”

I warned months ago this would be the route the “rulers” will take for their own survival.

But strangely enough I’m hopeful this time around the people would not fall in to the trap ……… my optimism stems from the reaction the people have so far shown for the Sirisena/Rajapakses putsch/coup. I thought Mahinda’s popularity was so great that people would just come out and embrace whatever he did ……… except for some media – Lake House, state TV – the rest of the reaction has been pretty lukewarm. I’m sure that comes as a great unexpected surprise/jolt for Mahinda/Sirisena just as it is for me.

The murder of two policemen were carried out by military intelligence personnel in order to strengthen their propaganda that LTTE is active again and to continue suppression of Tamils and postpone any reconciliatory measures such as release of political prisoners, vacating of civilian lands, promulgating of new constitution to share land and power with Tamils and mechanism to bring war criminals to justice. Unfortunately though MR/SLFP faction is openly supporting this, many in the UNP are silently endorsing this. There are EPDP cadres and rehabilitated LTTE personnel who are working with military intelligence to carry out measures to create trouble to Tamils to distract them from agitating for their due rights. The celebrations last week brazenly violating government order has caused shock to Sinhala racist psyche, as to how Tamils became brave all of a sudden.

    Dear Hon. Members of Parliament,

The Parliament is Supreme in the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, elected by 100 percent of the People and represents 100 percent of the People. Let the Supreme Court decide on the Constitutionality of Sirisena’s actions, and expose him. Make him eat crow. Stick to the constitution and the 19A. There is no need to appease a crook, madman and his co-conspirators.

This is why we need international judges or send the Rajapaksas Criminal to the Hage for trial. Clearly this Maithripala Sirisena drama was to protect the Rajapaksa Criminal Network from the special courts…

Even the call for early elections is part of the strategy to protect these criminals.

All acting against the will and welfare of the electorate. We have no confidence in any of the rogues sitting in there, so kindly go back to a general election so that people could decide the fate of the current bunch of crooks sitting in the so called supreme cesspit in the country. Please find that the mandate people had given for RW to go together with MS towards gg came to halt with the withdrawal of MS faction of the parliament.

Unless RW came with a fresh mandate how can people elected parliament in the previous context be still valid?

Time between MS’s support base left the govt. & RW’s being sacked by the president RW had been a fake PM.

Though there’re controversies due to imperfect 19th amendment president’s stance
is correct & appreciated by the majority.

To check it shall we agitate for a parliamentary election.

The president has absolutely no right to impose conditions like that! That is what happens when you appoint a person with an IQ of 60 points as Executive President.
The executive presidency must be abolished because the chances of a person with a low IQ becoming president are very high in Sri Lanka. And the consequences will be disastrous for the country!

    • 8
      0

      Estate Laborer,

Yes, when the mean IQ of a country is 79, half the population has an IQ below 79, 1/3 has an IQ below 64, and still plenty in the population with IQ’s below 60. That is why the late Dr. N M Perera warned during 1978, that the Executive president had too much power and will put the country in peril if a madman becomes president, as is the case now.

There is no problem with the Executive Presidency.

The Problem is with a madman being the President, as succinctly and presciently stated by the late Dr. N M Perera, during the 1978 debate on the new executive president Constitution.

Is there a provision in the constitution or 19A to send the madman president to Angoda Hospital for treatment?

    Dear President Sirisena,
Don’t confuse and cheat yourself, the people, the judges, the law and the constitution. You may have lost your memory power recently, but all of us have first hand memory. First of all, You should remember that the 19th amendment in the constituion was passed in the parliament are fully endorsed by you. Secondly, we would like remind you that during the election campagin and after elections you accused the former President (or his Family) attemptd murder you and you accused them of corruption and you appointed a Presidential commissions. There are number of cases pending court decisions, (some officials already in Jail) and you have not yet taken actions on the recommendations. Now you accuse UNP govt PM again murder attempts and you accused India as well. But you have not taken any legal actions against those attempts. You say you want to remove one PM for murder attempt but you want to give former President for who you accused earlier.
It clearly shows that you have no mental fitness to make decisions and people have a genuine interest on your mental health. Therefore, it is in the interest of you, your family, your country, pleasse you take full rest and take mental carefrom professional medical experts. We are happy to arrange high level international phychiatric treatment for you.

Sira continues to prove he is an incorrigible rascal. He has no option but to restore the government as it was before October 26. He cannot change the PM simply because he doesn’t like him. He can make such decisions only at his home. This is a public, official matter concerning the person who commands the confidence of the Parliament, and not his family issue. And it is the UNF that should decide who is going to be their candidate for the office of the PM. By continuing to be adamant on this matter flouting the constitution so flagrantly, Gamarala Sira is demonstrating to the whole world that he is a totally retarded nasty bugger. Soon after the UNF government is restored, the first priority should be the impeachment of this disgraceful President.

Who cares about President’s personal views.
People have full faith in the Supreme Court which is the supreme impartial body which could restore the tattered Constitution, subverted Parliament and people’s stolen rights to vote and elect any political party or leader of their choice.
President has set several bad precedents for the past 5 weeks which will hopefully be revoked by Sri Lanka’s preeminent Chief Justice and the Supreme Court in order to reestablish stability in the country and democracy in the Parliament.
In the meantime, the Chairman/Elections Commission has made weird political statements at a time he should absolutely be impartial and refrained from airing controversial views.
Then he says that he is taking action to introduce electronic voting system which is suspicious. Who would change the existing voting system at a time there is an unprecedented political turmoil in the country? And for what? There are all the signs that, if there is a snap election, it will not be free and fair and the same faces will return to Parliament even those who were rejected.
It is interesting to note that two young Artists have BLUNTLY REFUSED to accept their Awards from Duminda Disaanayake (SLFP-MS faction) and Udaya Gammanpila (JO-MR faction) which shows in which line the public have taken with regard to the present political turmoil, given the fact that those two are Ministers of President’s new Cabinet.
Politicians of present day should understand that the public uphold and cherish democratic values, people’s right to vote anyone of their choice and democratic institutions above all, which inculcate a sense of belonging in the people.

Raise Your hand to Save Ranil’s Fundamental Rights
    ———————————————————–
President Maithri has no right to say “I won’t appoint Ranil as Prime Minister, because I can’t work with him“ It is a blatant denial of fundamental rights for Ranil’s as Sri Lankan citizen. It is an incredible injustice against him. Ranil did not do anything wrong to deny his basic rights. Indeed, he is serving to the country as Parliamentarian, State Minister, Cabinet Minister, Opposition Leader and the Prime Minister for more than 40 years.

Conflict of Interest cannot exist at any of the positions in the public service. If Maitri does so, he loses the status quo in his post.

The Prime Minister is not the president’s wife or his private secretary to select someone else who he wants. According to the constitution, the President shall appoint as Prime Minister the Member of Parliament, who, in the President’s opinion, is most likely to command the confidence of Parliament.

Is Sri Lanka a maternal or paternal property of Maithripala Sirisena or Wedding gifted property to his wife?

Sirisena cannot play his younger aged days Mother and farther (Ammah-thaatha) drama in government.

I am not from UNP or any of the political party. Also, I disagree with the autocratic ruling system within UNP too. Every political party in Sri Lanka should embrace democratic principle including UNP. In that sense, we have to ensure every political party in Sri Lanka have a democratic framework that rotates party leadership over a period of time with limited terms.

However, Sirisens’s abrupt removal of PM and before that appointing a new PM should be reversed. Therefore I would suggest to Re-instate Ranil as PM again at least for a week and then Ranil to rescinded from Premiership voluntarily and select another person as PM by the democratic wish of the parliament. This should happen by democratic means and its good for Ranil to take his term of the party leader to end. Similarly to Anura of JVP, SLMC, and all other parties. We like to see a democratic framework within every political party in Sri Lanka.

Dilly-Dally by MS gives MR and his thieves to do a variety of things without scrutiny. The Chinese mega-contracts are a case in point. The time allowed to them by MS while they control the Media awaiting the legalities allow them to continue their spin as in SB stating that the Speaker intends to take the reins; among various others in different hue’s.
Notice that all the newly appointed Ministers are thieves who have many legal issues against them. Let us hope that their goons have not further compromised them by using the intrinsic power handed to them by the coup to whitewash, destroy, subjugate their lawlessness.
This dilly dalliance by MS is allowing them time to subvert the election process.
Watch out for the tampering with electronic votes.

President Sirisena won the last Presidential Elections as the common candidate and not as a contestant of the SLFP. However, he later assumed the leadership of SLFP breaking the promise of non-party President premise and it became the root cause for all the subsequent disagreements and conflicts with the Prime Minister; Of course, the cabinet ministers from SLFP instigated the President for conflicts instead of peaceful coexistence. The ultimate result was that they and the President were trapped by the opportunists to bring the country to this appalling state today. Now, it is time for the President to consult a different group of advisors who are reputed to be broad-thinking, wise and really patriotic and get advice to come out of this unstable situation, the country is in today.

It has come to a stage that the fate of the country is to be decided by 7 judges and not by the population of the country. Who created this situation?. What action should be taken against the two responsible for the crisis? In the government service, the government servants abide by FR and AR and in the same way the President. PMm Speaker and MPs should abide by the constitution Otherwise there is no purpose of taking oaths

Well, we; the Sri Lankans have been suffering a lot during recent past due to undemocratic behavior of the UNP; in particular RW.

The political marriage between MS & the UNP took place with great expectation (@ least) to a faction of the population who had had felt MR rule aggressively.

There’s an idea that due to MR’s intimacy with China, even the US & UK & EU were aggrieved but let’s just call it amateur political journalism.

It’s very clear that people gave the mandate in 2015 for RW to go together with MS towards good governance but instead he embroiled in CB bond scam & stood at loggerheads with the president that led to the termination of the political marriage.

So the very purpose of the mandate came to the end but power greedy RW & the UNP didn’t heed it & continued until the president took steps to sack RW & that has developed to a serious controversy now.
Had RW & the UNP sought a new mandate to continue just after the political divorce, these unfortunate events could not have happened.

If president withdraws the Gazette notification, it’ll dismay who has been hopeful of an election to solve this impasse.

Again all the MPs together, must give positive signal for an election if they think they have mass support without relying on non-existing mandate.

      Good advice

It’s not Sirisena, it’s Ranil thinks temple trees his property, to rent for weddings & cling in to it when he’s not the PM.

The problem today is all the UNP MPs are unfortunately in favor of Ranil.

How can that be when this man has been failing since the year 2000 & by way of deception became the PM in 2015 & lost the mandate & credibility within short period & still enjoying party support.

What’s the type of grip he’s having over his MPs?

      I’m afraid, black mailing?

It took so long to realize that what he did was not proper. I can see that a leader of a country and that too as a first citizen of the country was so reluctant to admit his fault after Mahinda Rajapakse faced a humiliating defeat. A President should abide by the will of the people and cannot and should not give priority to his personal grudge on the Prime Minister. Even now he is trying to create a division within the UNP which is not a healthy. After all, he should remember it is they who had supported Maithiripala Sirisena to become President when was not in good terms with Mahinda Rajapakse. Parliament is a sacred place to take appropriate measures for the benefit of the people. Within one month the impact on the country’s economy has placed the people in great hardships because of his senseless move by allowing room for undesirable characters in the Parliament.. .

Given all the controversy, and the allegations of unconstitutional decisions by the president, the speaker, and the new prime minister, one thing is clear.

Ranil W, the self inflicted “economic wizard”, no more a threat to the country.
I don’t really care who becomes the next legitimate prime minister, but it should NOT be Ranil W, or any of his “goon club” members.

Yes, I voted for My3 in Jan-215, and again for the UNP in the general election of Sept-2015.

In fact I did a lot of back stage in working with the NMSJ ( much more dedicated than Prof. S. Wijesuriya) behind the scenes, and I worked with the Rev Sobhitha Thero and Messrs Sisira Jayamaha, and Dr. De Abrew, during the times of the white van culture.

I was duly supported by my team of software engineers with Mr. Dharshana Jayamaha as the lead technician.

Personalities/ Figures like Sarath W, has arisen due to political necessity, and Rev Sobhitha Thero had no regard for such cheap popularity figures back then.

Well, the end expression of my story is: Prof Sarath W does not represent the true values and intentions of the NMSJ , and all his comments and press releases are purely to expand his popularity riding on the prophecy of Rev Sobhitha Thero, which I expect him to use for his political advantage in the future.

Thus I recall again that Prof. Sarath Wijesuriya DID NOT either play any significant part in the formation of NMSJ, nor was he any figure of significance until the parliamentary elections in Sept-2015.

All Sarath can boast about is his invasion into the NMSJ and his sudden injection into the ex-committee of NMSJ AFTER the sudden demise of Rev. Sobhitha Thero.

I usually do not write to any social media forums, but I thought that I had to express myself of this issue.

    Regards,

    Dr. Dharshana W

Sirisena doesn’t understand yet, it is not that he can appoint anybody he wishes from the majority side, it clearly states that the PM will be somebody who commands the support. He does not have a choice he will have to accept RW as the PM. He might act like child and ruin this country by not willing to accept RW. RW had been a very bad leader anyway we do not have a choice at the moment.

Maha Mangala Sutta: The continued refusal of the President to have Ranil as the President is perhaps because he (President) is a strict follower of Buddha. In the Maha Mangala Sutta Buddha says, Asevanaca Balanan – Pandithananca Sevana (Not to associate with the foolish, but to associate with the wise).
    .
The President perceives Ranil as a foolish person. Hence this aversion to have him as PM. Not having even seen Ranil in real life, I cannot judge whether the President’s perception is right or wrong. But there my theory is for whatever it is worth.

If Ranil is indeed a Balaya, then that would be the end of the road for him as well as his associates like Dr. Vikrama Bahu. Having associated such a long time with Dr. Vikrama Bahu, who has a PhD in Mathematics from the prestigious Cambridge University, Ranil continuing to be in this stupid situation is unfortunate. Even a monkey would have shown some improvement.
    .
Perhaps a part of the explanation lies in the fact that Bahu’s PhD was from Darwin College of Cambridge. And we all know who Darwin is. He was the father of the Theory of Evolution. What Mathematics (and hence Bahu’s Doctorate) has to do with Monkeys, I don’t have the foggiest idea. But, looks like, in the tree of evolution, Ranil has got a long way to climb to get to where the President is. Until he reaches a high enough branch, things are going to be bad for Ranil – And for Bahu.

Please do not use the Buddha’s teachings to justify foolish behavior of men grown old in vain.

If the president felt that he was too righteous to work with the ‘foolish’ premier – he would have tendered his resignation as a man of integrity would, citing clear reasons for his decision.

There is no justification for blatantly violating the constitution, and the many dubious actions that followed such as the CID officer’s transfer debacle, etc., etc.

Does not really paint a picture of a man trying to fix the unrighteous.

I will use whatever I want in my comments. Don’t be a dictator like your hero MS and tell me what to write and what not to write. If I want to quote Buddha I will do so. So would it be with all other teachings.
        .
Let CT be the judge. Just as the Constitution, correctly interpreted would be the judge in the political problems we are having now, CT is a capable judge of deciding what to publish and what not to.
        .
After all, MS is not almighty God. He may be to you – but not to me. He is behaving like a spoilt brat as described in today’s Sunday Times Fifth Column. The problem is that MS is not worth even a ‘Common Cent’ of public money.
        .
He is irrational, ungrateful, unprincipled, revengeful, cowardly, inconsistent, unreasonable, selfish and pure-stupid.
        .
Come what may, we should not allow this mad man to create a precedent by childishly saying “I don’t want him.” Precedents, especially precedents created by a President can change things irreversibly and pave the way for disaster of our country for years to come.
        .
UNF has to be steadfast and resist the mad man come what may. He has blinked and taken a foot back. A few more strong punches are going to knock him out.
        .
If you have a few cents to spare, see the 1964 movie Becket – based on history. There you will find how a man of principles would behave under extreme pressure. Our spoilt brat’s self created problems do not even come close to them.

Perhaps hoppers like you could help by hopping back to Mahinda?

There is no need to hop back to him. I was always there. It is people like you who voted the hopper man in 2015 has to hop all the time as he gave you people the boot.

    Editor Colombo Telegraph has got the title of the article wrong. {“Sirisena Takes A Step Back: Contemplates Withdrawal Of Gazette Dissolving Parliament, But Still ‘No’ To Ranil”}
    .
MS has taken far too many steps backword. He is now in the coup d’état area.
Instead of ~ “Sirisena Takes A Step Back:………” it should have been “Sirisena Takes A Step FORWARD:……”
or even better “Sirisena Contemplates Taking A Step Forward:……….”.
    .
Please note in the UNF delegation who met with MS
Mano Ganeson (TPA), who earlier took a step back but has now taken a step forward.
The silence of Rishad Bathiudeen (ACMK) and Rauff Hakeem (SLMC). No instruction from ACJU.
Champika Ranawake (JHU) says “I am still here”
    .
It is very very important to note that TNA is NOT part of UNF. They know the faulty aspects of our version of democracy. They know that a coup always leads to repression.
    .
SLPP is waiting to portray TNA as the villain.
By the way, who the hell are these SLPP MPs?
    .
{“…………But Still ‘No’ To Ranil”}. Is the prodder at work?

In expressing agreement to withdraw that “GAZETTE” (Dissolution of Parliament) did the President consult the ex “Chief (“Cheap to me) Justice” Mr. Sarath N De Silva?. When this action of the President “Rumored” much earlier than this meeting with UNF & TNA, that ex “CJ” made a public announcement and said: ” The President CANNOT withdraw the “Gazette Notice” now, as it is a subject matter of a case before the SC”. To me, that is like “Cat jumped out of the bag” (Balala Malen Eliyata Penna). Couldn’t “HE” the “ONLY” or “ONE” among many of the “Eagle Eagles” that the President said: “I consulted “Eminent Legal” (Neethi Visaradas) persons before taking action on (1) The appointment of MR as the PM (2) Prorogation of the Parliament & (3) Dissolution of the Parliament”. Isn’t this “President” once more proving to be going “Insane” in saying that “I will never appoint Ranil as PM”. Even though this “Ranil W” is a “DUD COIN” to me, the President must know his “Responsibilities”; “Duties” & “Obligations” vested on him by the Constitution and refrain from making such stupid statements in public. “Mr” (?) President: You have done enough of damage to this country and virtually made it LAUGHABLE in the the eye of world politics. So WHY NOT you STEP DOWN and pave the way for the country and its PEOPLE to elect a much capable person as its President? That is the SPEEDIEST and the MOST APPROPRIATE step to be taken by YOU to bring back the country to a DEMOCRATIC SYSTEM OF GOVERNING, that you RUINED. Thank you.
