Sirisena’s Casual Remarks On Bribing MPs In Parliament Sets Off Firestorm On Social Media

President Maithripala Sirisena, in a shocking revelation, said former President Mahinda Rajapaksa could not show a majority in Parliament as the prices of MPs “shot up” surprisingly.

“Some MPs even asked for Rs.500 million to cross over. I personally know about such situations. It was like calling for tenders. That is why Mahinda Rajapaksa could not show a majority in Parliament, ” Sirisena said in an interview with Daily Mirror.

Sirisena’s brazen remarks have set off a firestorm on social media as this is a first time a President of the country had openly made casual remarks about horse-trading MPs in Parliament. Many claimed that citizens should lodge complaints with the Bribery Commission calling for action on Sirisena for not disclosing the information on bribing MPs.

New King, displeased with his butterfly, left for a new partner. He is a client of Prameela. New King is now soaked of these tales. He is num. He can’t feel it. So he is singing Premeela’s song “Maapillai ragasiyam sollavaa naan sollava”.
He came alone to this seat. He is isolated alone before he goes out. He is caught in many deals red-handed. He probably learned it all from his prestigious partners like Mr. Clean Ranil and War hero Old King. After living with Madhavi, he thought Kannagi was better. Now he remembers why he left Kannagi. He knows, if he is Vasantha Senanayaka, now Madhavi would appear to be belter. But he is not sure who he is.
He staged the coup. The end of that tunnel is not yet visible. Tamils, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Christians Minorities, Diplomats, LawAsia everybody is a party in the case in the Supreme Court against his Coup. He is leaning and seeing down below him, those all who helped him to climb to tower is breaking it with their iron pickaxes and sledge hammers. He can pinch any hard on his face. But he cannot feel the difference between the nightmare and the real life. He now really hates those, who allured him to this life, the fakes, Mr. Clean and War Hero. If his dhoti is torn off on the tower’s top standing then, why not those of the two crooks who paved him this path?
He said all these earlier in Colombo SLFP Rally too. So I don’t understand why all the commentators are little over reacting.
Commentator Sumane is going on the path of “a thorn can be removed with another thorn”. That is where we are learning Sumane’s (& New King’s) wise word of “nude can obliterated with the nude”.

This [edited out] has shown it as no other, that he is shamless.

There are audio tapes in circulation, that President himself made direct effort to persuade UNP MPs.

He himself prorogued the Parliament not telling the truth as to why but to allow purchase of MPs to be successful.

He himself now FROM THE SAME BIOLOGICAL MOUTH PIECE seems to have the audcity to express before the very same nation as if he was unware to all the dealings ?
He may be thinking that PEOPLE in this country are born fools ?

UNP’s propaganda-machine is woeful and pathetic ………. just as it’s leader Ranil who is lazy and lethargic ……… not much’s gonna be achieve with that attitude.

Just look how well the JO made Ranil wear the “bond-scam”

There is no better opportunity than this to get the highest citizen of the country Sirisena, to wear this shameful attempts at bribing that are glaring crimes according to the laws of the land.

But I suspect Ranil and his mob are once again fallen asleep at the well.

          Dear Nimal Fernando,
          .
Time and again you make wonderful comments. Of course, there’s little that’s wonderful about sri Lanka at present.
          .
I have borrowed your point in making a comment of my own at the bottom of the pile.
          .
Very true, the UNP just doesn’t know how to capitalise on these gaffs. Actually these are much more than gaffs. Grievous transgression of all norms of human conduct. If nothing better can be thought of, start a competition to analyse the misdeeds of My3 and MaRa.

            Dear Sinhala_Man,

I am assuming it will not be improper to hold the “feet under fire” of an eminent personality who was so committed against even the Mickey-mouse bribery of an underpaid Vavunia Ralahami who sought a Rs. 200 bribe. The eminence not just brought the case to the court and then thought it necessary to publish a whole article on how he, a DSc outsmarted the uneducated Ralaham, fanning out own publications on electrical dynamics or whatever to prove Ralahami’s lack of education! The fact that the Ralahami lost only because he did not have hard proof of the meter reading is another matter. And some of you, as you may recall announcing “stood up and clapped”.
            .
Now that we have very explicit admission by no less than the President himself that there was large scale bribery attempts between MR and potential cross-over MP’s, will it be proper to expect Prof. Ratnajeevan Hoole, now a Commissioner of Elections, to make known any actions he is taking, based either on his personal commitment to anti-bribery initiatives, or in his official capacity at the elections commission, on this depravity of political horse-trading now exposed and confirmed in public by the President.
            .
Truly surprised at the silence till now!

Thanks, babanpunchi; i don’t really have to reply you, except assent to what you say.
              .
As for Kumar r who has time and again refused to identify himself, I say read this:
              .
              “Cecil B. de Mille
              Rather against his will
              Was persuaded to leave Moses
Out of the Wars of the Roses.”
              .
Prof. Jeevan Hoole has with great courage filed action against the Maithri-MaRa combine in the Supreme Court.
              .
We have not discussed him here, but nasty anonymous you have decided to say disparaging things about him. Go here if you want to get mad; I’ve just said something about Prof. Hoole in a fitting context.

                .
How quickly the sand castle crumbles. I am talking about your credibility. You are now reduced to the only option – pathetic defense of calling names.
                .
You pretended to champion democracy and fairness to all, and then when asked if you, as representing the majority, would help support the devastated segment of Tamil mothers still wailing for information on the disappeared, you suggested that they just take to streets more aggressively and they are on their own on that. Implication: you will not raise a finger. What exactly was the democracy you were championing – ask one of your Tamil friends.
                .
Letting aside the Tamils problem, when you screamed your head off about the Sinhala rascals dragging the country down on multiple counts , I suggested that it is up to the intellectual, intelligent, informed, concerned majority among the majority such as you who has the key responsibility to neutralize the shots called by the rascal extremists, who after all are only in the minority by definition. You cowered half-bent saying that you are afraid to do that because you are already getting nuisance attacks privately. You know what is the right thing to do and you know that it is your responsibility, but you will shy away and stay on the sidelines and merely badger the extremist rascals at the top of your voice so that you can sleep in synthetic peace! Effectively, no action , just words! Guess what that says about cowardice?! Ask yourself this time!

                  Dear Kumar R,
                  .
Please provide me with a link to whatever I said about the right of Tamils to protest. I don’t think that I have ever egged people on to protest at unwarranted risk to themselves.
                  .
I know that I have empathised with problems faced by Tamils qua Tamils. However, I have also pleaded with Tamils to understand that there are past tragedies that have befallen the Sinhalese, which are unknown to you. My efforts have been to prevent head on collisions owing to ignorance of what other communities have undergone. It may be that the exchanges here illustrate this:

Why don’t you provide links? Instead you insinuate motives without showing what the context was.
                  .
Exploitation of of your own anonymity is central to your unethical attacks on people. It is tongue-in-cheek for you to suggest that I take this up with the editors of Colombo Telegraph. It’s just not practical.
                  .
We have serious problems in our society; I’m not interested in impressing anyone with “intelligent argument”. Ultimately we all crawl towards our graves: what lies beyond I don’t know. However, I feel that we are making life unbearable for some other life forms. I’d like to see that minimised.

                    .
Even better, let me ask you the same question again!
                    .
Given that you realize that the Sinhala State has been unfair by the families still struggling with the missing persons and lost residencial issues, will you as an educated, inteligent, concerned citizen belonging to the majority, and thereby command the majority view in the democracy, take the initiative to help harness majority support to find a fair solution to that calamity? If you will not, what then is your suggestion for fairness that you vocalize?

As for your stand on Jeevan, another case of pathetic back-pedaling! You were the one who sent elaborate heartfelt bon voyages wishing him the best of success in cleaning up the all the filth in Pakistan and Maldives as they prepared for their elections. Add to that, Jeevan was so gung-ho about the Rs. 200 bribe attempt by the Vavunia traffic cop. Putting the two together, I thought you would be the first to cheerlead Jeevan getting involved in this multi-million (RS 500 million per cheat?) depravity in our own country that came to light by no less than the President’s own public statements where he admitted to colluding with MR in this elephantine briberies. What a disappointment? Oh – perhaps you think Jeevan is a superhero only when it comes to Mickey Mouse issues – is that it?

Please take up any issues that you have with Jeevan Hoole, yourself.
                  .
I think him a fine man. Period.
                  .
There is a limit to how much he can do; he’s got enough on his plate. On this very page I’ve given you a link which indicates how much “average Maldivians” appreciate what he did for them. Hoole, himself, must have moved on from there, having done what he could.
                  .
It is rarely that individuals take on the entire government. Hoole did that with one case. Now, many others have filed action. I wish them well because I think that what Sirisena set in motion six weeks ago was wrong.
                  .
What have you done yourself? Nothing, I feel. All those who read even what I now write are wasting our time, since we learn nothing from you. It may be that where a query by you allows me to provide a new insight, I will respond. However, that doesn’t appear to be often. Continue on your sterile course; I couldn’t care less.

                    Dear Sinhala_Man,
                    .
Your relentless reverence, not far from stooping to pandering if not servility, is noted.
                    .
Jeevan does not write anymore to CT readers pleading for a job, for a $15 driver allowence, $100 Colombo batta or any such. He does not chest beat anymore about beating up 6th grader Ralahamies any more either to assert his intellectual superiority. He does not chauvinistically degrade other religions, races, and sexes (Hindu dancers and Kattubedda women) anymore.
                    .
If you have not seen the sea-change in tone, attitude and issues, and if you assume that metamorphosis was autonomous, that only tells how deep in the sand you want to intentionally keep your head!
                    .
I am sure you can find better use of your time to just pretend progressiveness while contributing to none.
                    .
                    Good luck and God Bless!

                    Oh Sinhala_Man,
                    .
Don’t you truly realize how shamelessly pathetic is your cover “There is a limit to how much he can do; he’s got enough on his plate”?
                    .
Jeevan had enough time to take up a case against a Ralahami to save a $10 ticket accusing the cop as soliciting a Rs. 200 bribe. While Jeevan escaped the $10 fine on a the cop not having a hard record of speed, the bribery accusation was dismissed without a flinch! Jeevan had the time to go to courts, waving up his electro dynamic expertise, all just to save $10 while chest beating on the victory over the Ralahamy, on intellectual merits! You “stood up and clapped”.
                    .
Now, he is an official at the Elections Commission who I am hoping has some oversight responsibilities in ensuring no rules related to voting are violated by the politically elected. The President himself has handed over ample evidence in a publicized interview on bribery solicitations running to as much as Rs. 500,000,000! That is per MP willing to cross-over. And, this issue is the most urgent, most destructive, most humiliating and most discussed issue in the country at this point, given that the governance has come to a grinding halt because of that.
                    .
And you want to offer the “Jeevan is too busy otherwise” excuse on his behalf?! Are you seriously not ashamed of how lame and how low you could go?!

“That is funny that you don’t remember. I will be happy to track it down . . . “
                      .
Well, I’m still waiting! Spit it out. You obviously have a list of things that could be thrown at me out of context. It can’t be difficult for you to give me the link. All this you do, not because you hate me, but because you hate Jeevan. I’m sure that you have a list of charges that you can throw at Jeevan, too – out of context, and never revealing your identity. That is where I’m sure other readers smell a rat.
                      .
This has begun to resemble those famous exchanges between Izzeth Hussain (decent guy, I’m glad I looked him up, in his Hill Street, Dehiwela, house a few months before his demise) and H.L.D. Mahindapala. Both excellent writers, but who was interested in fighting cocks? Izzeth said that he enjoyed writing the stuff, but I think that he made a mistake in doing so.
                      .
I’m no longer bothered by what you say – just thought I’d say GROBR.
                      .
I’m glad that you’ve realised that Jeevan is probably on to more important things. A great man – but yes, I’d always maintain that he shouldn’t have said those “inappropriate” things about the bathing belles of K’bedda. I’m pretty sure, despicable man, that nobody but you is bothered about it any more – certainly not Jeevan.
                      .
I’m pretty sure you’ll read this – but nobody else!

            Dear Sinhala _Man,

Why dont you focus on prevailing media mafia within the country ?

Dont you think that RAJAKASHE MEN ARE BEHIND various media institutions in the country ? That is the reason even tiny issues handley by Rajakashes to be captured as HEADLINE NEWS in printed and other media within the island

Why main stream media would not seem to give the priority to the facts and figures of current situation ?

This has been the case also under MS-RW good governance govt. This was loudly criticised by Ranil also in the parliament.

They can not start anything like that; the list topped by the Central Bank day time robbery is longer than that or Mara and My3 put together.
When people see Ravi K on the TV screen they loose their patience completely. Apparently, RW has sent a letter confirming that Ravi K will be his minister of finance. What a joke!
Does RW think that Sri Lankans are lunatics and are suffering from Alzheimer. No, we still remember the case of Monarch residence! and the foreign exchange fraud case between Raj Rajaratnam (now in US jail) and him.
Even Sajith can not do much for the UNP (currently in the ICU), since he is silent on most important matters including the above facts about Ravi K and the fact that RW meeting with some foreign ambassadors instead of people.

      Annie,

all these are public secret, but MEDIA #s long slumber supporting the crime doers would not change.

Be it in Europe, America or Asia what plays the crucial role grass root level people being informed with ongoing facts and figures is MEDIA. Why those grass root level people stay not respecting facts but some misleading news being telecasted by SIRASA, HIRU and DERANA TV channels ?

So long media men are part of vicious political goons, only wrongful information would become opinion of the average mind set.
Latter is SADLY continung in the country since BALLIGE putha Rajakashe was defeated in this country

Talk to your circles and collect it yourself if you are in SL, else, do it whenever you travel back home, you will come to know that the people are like brainwashed ( I mean significant numbers in the society regardless of their education).

We have been criticisiing this on and on, why lanken main STREAM media behave that igonorant – not doing their job well.

And what steps that the MEDIA protecting groups should take up against these MEDIA mafia men ?

It is more or less like LANKEN media is caught by predatory Businessmen who seem to have no hearts to the GENERAL pulic of this country.

So it’s not a surprise if they pick them from anywhere, when they violate the US laws or it’s policies.

Prez Sirisena’s statement proves that he was also involved in the buying of MPs for money. On his own admission he becomes guilty of bribery and corruption. What a President we have!!! By his own action he proves that he is only suitable to plough field in Polonnaruwa and NOT govern the country !!!

The Red Eyed Devil: In the Gampaha District there are 7 villages, adjoining each other, with their names ending in Paluwa, such as Soori Paluwa, Kenda Liyadda Paluwa. In Sinhala ‘Paluwa’ has many meanings one of them being Desolation. The villages got their names because a Raksha named Rakthaksha Raksha (The Red Eyed Devil) haunted these villages a long time back, each day taking one human sacrifice, human flesh being his favorite food and human blood his favorite drink.
    .
Folklore says that a clever Kattadiya managed to catch the the Red Eyed Devil, put him in a bottle, which was then thrown in to Kelani River. He also warned all to take care because the menace may come back again one day as a reincarnation.
    .
MS was born in Soori Paluwa and later on the family shifted to Polnnaruwa area. It is quite likely that MS is the predicted reincarnation of the Red Eyed Devil. Being an improved hybrid version of the Old Red Eyed Devil, the 2018 model is not satisfied with one human sacrifice a day. He is taking thousands at a time. If this goes on anymore the whole country is going to be one big Paluwa, perhaps to be named as Siri Paluwa once the job is over.

It is indeed really sad for me. I have voted for this punk Sirisena. Now I feel I did big mistake giving wings to this culprit. How madly he speak in front of people or so called Mass Media? I cant understand what standards this guy have. What emotions he is driving? I am really frustrated helping directly appoint him as President of Sri Lanka by voting him. Shame on myself and my choices.
How madly he pinching hearts of 62 lacks innocent people who voted for him? This is clearly a lack of values. This stupid mad man have not get any value. He is a mere waste or a by product of our social and education system. His ego will one day become a disaster for our society and our country at last.
So its my humble request don”t become another “Maru Sira” මරුසිරා. Now its high time to go. ත

Anyone anywhere attempting to bribe should be investigated.

In politics bribery must be dealt with very severely. These MPs are elected by the people because of the party they stand for in the parliament. Anyone crossing over must stand in an immediate bi-election. The moment they cross they are no longer MPs until re-elected.

If the first citizen of the country acknowledges the knowledge of bribing , then what can you expect from state officers and the police who well known for taking bribes.

He talks of the bond scam as a black mark in Sri Lanka which I agree is true. If so what this President is doing is like the kettle calling the Pot black.

I would also like to know why the Honorable fake minister .S.B Dissanayake has still not been taken into custody for openly stating that money was offered. Under M.S there is one law for the Politicians and another law for the public.

The reaction of shock is significant: surely, everyone knows that corruption, in its various forms, is rampant; indeed, has become the norm?

So the moral outrage is at the open, verbal, expression of corruption, and NOT AT ITS EVERYDAY PRACTICE:

As with sex, it’s a case of: Do it, but don’t talk publicly about it

    Hypocrites!

CT uses the term ‘casual remarks’ unadvisedly. Whether the remarks are of a casual or formal nature makes no difference, as the offence is very serious. Can someone make a ‘casual’ remark that suggests possession of knowledge about the perpetrators of a yet unsolved murder and then tell police who call to make inquiries to disregard what he said because it was only a ‘casual remark’?

So this is the conversation My3 and Mahinda had prior to the Oct26th

Mahinda – ado My3 how much bribe you need to make me the Prime Minister
My3 – I need $50 million transferred to my Swiss account
Mahinda – I can do that.that is not a problem.
My3 – where will you get the money from?
Mahinda – come on My3! you know how much I swindled from the various China projects and the tsunami fund. I gave you a small cut too. $50 million is chicken shit for me.
My3 – but how can you show majority in the Parliament.
Mahinda- oh , leave that to me. I can bribe a few corrupt MPs to cross over.
My3 – How much is your budget per MP. That is also coming out from your corrupt funds?
Mahinda –yes yes. well some of them are very cheap. I will start at 10million rupees. And see how it goes. My budget is maximum $100 million rupees.
My3 – when will you transfer my $50million.I will check my account and once the funds is in my account. I will sack Ranil and make you PM
Mahinda – ok good. I will ask Namal to sort out the transfer
My3 – its; your responsibility to show majority in the parliament.
Mahinda – OK machan. I will also ask Gota to drop a few fake news about TNA and Eelam

    few weeks later –
MY3 – ado Mahinda. we are in a shit situation. what happened to the majority you were going to show in the parliament
Mahinda – what can I do. They are asking 500 million rupees now. Some of them have gone public that I offered them bribes and that is making it more difficult to buy MPs

Not just MPs; look at the minor creatures like Dambara Amila of Puravesi Balaya who swindled Rs 1 lakh (Rs 100000) every month from Litro gaz. It is big news now because Dambara spoke (and still speaks) like a saint of the Old Testament.
And have you forgotten Shaleela Munasingha who was the chairman of Litro Gaz (still in remand custody, I believe, for stealing money from a Thai Bank). UNP, JVP, and TNA used his party symbol: Hansaya (Swan), for Sirisena when he contested 2015 Presidential election.
This is on top of the Central Bank heist masterminded by the UNP bigwigs.
Sirisena recognized all these crooks later but it was too late.
What people need today is a general election; Supreme Court verdict can not help us. The only thing the SC could do is to say: according to the constitution this is legal and this is not legal. That will only bring back the RanilW and his royal circle to power. That will not help the general public that have been the victim of Sirisena-Wickremasinghe government of the last 3 and half years.

Please reassure me ….have I misunderstood BUT weren’t all these UNP MPs who were asking for bribes in order to cross over to the SLFP/UPFA??
Thought I read somewhere that they went back and forth because the SLFP could not match the UNP bribes that were offered for these MPs to stay put !!

Hmmmmmmmm ……… This latest revelation by the President has saved the Speaker who was unfairly accused by various parties for creating a crisis in the country.
According to the President, it was the former President who was instrumental in creating this unprecedented political crisis due to his failure for not amassing enough funds to buy MPs in the Parliament before accepting the PM post!!!!!! Am I reading this right? I wonder, what was former President’s reaction to this? I saw him relating “Sanwara Jathakaya” to a reputed Buddhist priest! While trying to read “450 Sanwara Jathakaya,” I encountered “134 Babbu Jathakaya” which is more relevant, I think.

    Hello, CT:

I am still pondering as to why Prez Sirisena’s statement is of any political value, since it is a known fact that MPs were sold in auction, subject to barter.

This principle of bartering has been in existence ever since the ruling of Sarath Silva as chief justice when he accommodated a decision to legitimize of an MP elected from one party to “cross over” to another party in parliament.

This stupid ruling has been exploited by the many parties to cross-over their allegiance to the public in exchange for a fat bank deposit, either in SL or in a foreign bank.

Whilst such actions are a disgrace to any community ( be it the local congregation, the Grama Sevaka community, or even the Urban community as defined by the Urban Council boundaries) bartering of any members of such inclusive members SHOULD be considered, “unlawful”, and the Supreme Court should not waste a single on such trivialities. It such a waste of valued time of the Supreme Court Judges attention span.

    Regards,

This is indeed an astounding revelation for Sirisena himself to have made. I’d just been telling myself that I’d better school myself in patience until the Supreme Court judgement is revealed, but this, surely, provides material for further protests, and even some other Court proceedings.
    .
These proceedings should be related to the bribery laws.
    .
Would it also not be possible for this statement to be used as proof that Sirisena just doesn’t know what he’s doing – that he is mentally incapable of heading a country of 22 million?
    .
Why hasn’t the UNP made better use of this?
    .
Compare with what Weerawansa does with much less to go on.

What I believe is the resistence they the UNPrs faced by local Media didnot allow them to outreach masses; that was the biggest failure in that MS-RW good governance government
Predatory MEDIA business men only focused on their selfish gains, they never thoughts about truths being part of their news casts; see for example, I know by myself, heath care achieved a lot. Even WHO praised it on and on. Over 80 or more of medical drugs/products were subjected tangible price reductions. For example heart patients paid 2/3 of the price then they paid for the heart stents. And eye lenses were distributed free for many. All in all, there had been a greater achievements in health sector, but not even the eseential news on those price reductions were in the air. That alone kept the patients away from proper information
That is the reason why I believe MEDIA is run by Rajakashe supporters not allowing MS-RW news becoming the HEAD LINES of the news items.

When he himself offered bribe to jump from one party to another, is he blaming himself, or is he stabbing on the back of Mahinda Rajapakse saying Mahinda offered bribe? In both cases, as per the phone recordings that were in the media, it is clear that both Maithree and Mahinda are involved in the act of bribery which should be investigated. Further it appears that the black money is kept in Pansal, its time the bribery commission raids the Pansal to take over the black money. Prior to the telephone recordings there was no indication that the Pansal were the palaces where black money of Rajapakse was kept, now the cat is out of the bag, what is the IGP doing without raiding the Pansal? When Maithripala’s Daughter, Son in Law and Brother are involved in bribery and corruption, for him to talk like a saint shows the true character of this “Appaya”.
