SLPP Survival Depends On Shift To Dullas, Rejecting Ranil & The Rajapaksas

By Dayan Jayatilleka

Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka

The SLPP is at a crossroads. If it takes the wrong turning there is no going back. The wrong turning leads to politico-electoral extinction.

The SLPP is being pushed into a disastrously wrong choice not once but twice over. One is voting for Ranil Wickremesinghe. The other is remaining with the Rajapaksa and indeed the Gotabaya brand. The two disastrous choices are merged into one: to vote for Ranil Wickremesinghe, the front person for and candidate of the Rajapaksas. That is the worst possible combination, and the most horrific possible branding for the SLPP.

Will the SLPP remain the Rajapaksas’ pet ‘Pohottuwa’, now and forever reviled by the public, or will it return to its proper name the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, with its roots in the Joint Opposition (JO) and the country’s traditional Center-Left?

If I were an SLPP MP, in the blink of an eye I would opt for Dullas over Ranil, would go flat out to convince that Party’s Parliamentary Group to do so too. Here’s why.

If the SLPP makes the wrong choice, it will suffer the same fate at the next election as the UNP did in August 2020. If it makes the correct choice it can wind up like the SJB in August 2020. If it is very smart and very fortunate, it could even be like the UNP in Oct-December 1988, a hugely unpopular ruling party barely escaping extinction by the skin of its teeth– by switching its leader to a dissenting reformist who was more in tune with the demands of a radical uprising.

If the SLPP makes the right choice, it will have a slim chance to wash away some of its sins and re-brand itself under a new, non-Rajapaksa leadership. That will bring it more in line with the SLFP and the 10 smaller parties, enabling a refloating of the country’s traditional Center-Left, which is no guarantee of electoral victory at an upcoming parliamentary election or even in 2024/2025, but affords a chance to avoid a complete wipeout as suffered by the LSSP-CPSL in 1977 and the UNP in 2020.

What was the SLPP formed to fight for and against? It was formed to fight for the values of the SLFP which the SLFP at the time had betrayed by entering a coalition with—wait for it—Ranil Wickremesinghe. It’s MPs and more importantly voters recoiled from that choice and having gone through the crucially important stage of the Joint Opposition (JO) of which Dullas Alahapperuma was the national organizer, crystallized as the SLPP.

So, Ranil Wickremesinghe is the very antipode of everything that the SLPP was formed to represent. But was that the real agenda behind the SLPP’s founding? Were there two agendas, one open and the other hidden?

Hidden Agenda

Is the SLPP merely the platform for one family clan and a pod for its young Crown Prince someday? Or is it the platform for a certain ideology and intended to fill a distinct space in the island’s politics?

Today the SLPP is faced with a choice between the ideas and ideals of its voters and the hidden agenda of its leaders. This is the same choice that the SLFP faced a quarter century ago.

The SLFP was formed by SWRD Bandaranaike to represent certain ideas, values and social forces which were not represented by the UNP. It was formed to constitute a Center-Left in the country’s politics.

Later it degenerated into a vehicle for the Bandaranaike family or more correctly the Ratwatte-Bandaranaike-Obeysekara oligarchy. The SLFP survived by changing its leadership, first to a rebellious left-oriented member of the family identified more as Chandrika Kumaratunga than Chandrika Bandaranaike, and then switching from the Bandaranaikes to Mahinda Rajapaksa and finally to Maithripala Sirisena.

The SLPP should do the same, with Dullas Alahapperuma having come forward. There is not only no better moment than now to do so, , but it is also the very last chance offered by history to do so.

Ranil Wickremesinghe is a walking Chernobyl, utterly toxic for the SLPP, SLFP and Group of 10 voters. The SLFP split with the bulk going with the rebel faction of which Dullas was a key personality, precisely because it opted to enter a coalition, not just with the UNP but precisely with the UNP of Ranil Wickremesinghe, not of Sajith Premadasa or Karu Jayasuriya.

In 2015 it was Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga who pushed Maithripala Sirisena and the SLFP into the alliance with Ranil Wickremesinghe, instead of insisting on Karu Jayasuriya as UNP partner. In 2022 it is the Rajapaksa clan that is pushing the SLPP into backing the same Ranil, with far more terminal prospects.

If the SLPP MPs back Ranil over their own candidate Dullas, they will be deserted by their voters who will switch either to the JVP-NPP or the successor party to the SLPP that those parliamentarians who vote for Dullas will doubtless establish on the morning after. Voting for Ranil means that the SLPP which was founded to counter the SLFP’s 2015 option for Ranil and substitute for that parent party, will become the SLFP of 2015-2017, while the Dullas Group will become tomorrow, what the JO was in 2015 and the SLPP was in 2017.

The SLPP is already facing the prospect of electoral elimination that the UNP experienced in 2020. Since the economic punishment that the Gotabaya administration meted out to the people was even more severe than that experienced under the Bandaranaike regime of 1970-1977, it will take much more than the 17 years it took for the SLFP to be elected to office.

Furthermore, since Namal has been an obedient son and loyal nephew unlike Chandrika was in relation to Madam Bandaranaike, and since he is incapable of breaking away and forming an SLMP (Sri Lanka Mahajana Party) that CBK and Vijaya did in 1984, it will take the SLPP at least two decades before it makes a comeback. It could take even as long as it took Bongbong Marcos, i.e., 35 years.

However, the SLPP doesn’t have to wait that long if it opts for Dullas and defeats Ranil. Dullas, unlike Ranil, is the guy who can understand the Aragalaya and dialogue with it. In the 1990s when I was working with President Premadasa, Dullas was on the other side, a brilliant political essayist in the new wave of leftwing tabloids of the 1990s. I do not know whether he was ever a member of the JVP but the tabloids certainly were a platform for the recovery and return of the JVP into mainstream politics, organizationally spearheaded by Kumara Gunaratnam. So, whether or not Dullas was JVP, he and the leaders of the JVP and FSP could fairly easily dialogue or ‘trialogue’ with each other.

Few are aware or recall that the actual author of Mahinda Chinthanaya in its successive version, starting with the winning manifesto of 2005, was Dullas Alahapperuma. No Dullas, no Mahinda Chinthanaya or a very different one. Dullas was the young righthand man – and more importantly, the ideologue– of Mahinda Rajapaksa when Mahinda was at his very best, during his first candidacy and in his first term.

Dullas is also that rarity, an SLPP personality against whom there is no charge of corruption or the abuse of power. His house was spared by the public during the arson attacks of May 9th. The guy is known for his progressive views and non-polarizing, non-confrontational personality. In a party that has the mud of the Rajapaksa clan all over it, he is Teflon. What more could the SLPP need to survive and even recover?

Sorry if it’s too much. Take a quick look. The idea is to elect an interim leader now, and have an administration that will let the citizens decide at an election.

It seems Ranil has managed to get himself elected President. Sajith might as well fall in line if he actually is as patriotic as he claims to be. And, oh, just a few more years in the wilderness for Dr. DJ.

He He He. Dullas is a western name. The family name Alahapperuma is really Alahap Perumal a pure Thamizh name, meaning the Beautiful great one meaning god. Saivites Thamizh Hindus generally this name to describe Lord Siva. Calling him Siva Peruman or Perumal . However, the title Perumal or Thirumal is generally used for Lord Vishnu. These Thamizh origin family names prove, who are the modern descendants of all these Chola/Pandian/Chera/Pallava invaders, and immigrants and occupiers.

          ===
There are Sinhalayo who have taken Portuguese, Dutch and English names. That does not mean they are descendants of Portuguese, Dutch or English. They are Sinhalayo because they consider Sinhala as their mother tongue.
          Who is a Thamizh?.

            Eagle,
In Chennai, there is a “Nanayakkara Chetty Street”. You figure that this Tamil guy took a Sinhala name?
            Your opinion please?

Eagle Thaatha, however, genetic analysis confirms what I state. Chingkallams may have taken Portuguese, Dutch and English names, but they have minimal genetic output from the Portuguese, Dutch and British, but on the contrary, they share more than 70% DNA with Indian Thamizh.

Alahapperumaal is Vishnu’s name. There are Azakar malai and Azakar kovil (a Divyadesam dedicated to Vishnu).
He could very well be a Malayali.
Many of the local Peruma(l) names originate in Kerala.

Could be but many more in Thamizh Nadu . Malayalam is a daughter language of Thamizh since it really broke away from its Thamizh mother only a few centuries ago, it is very close to Thamizh in a lot of ways. Basically, literary Malayalam is Grantham, a highly Sanskritized version of Thamizh, whereas simple spoken Malayalam still largely used by the masses is more or less the old Chera Thamizh dialect that was called Malayalam from ancient times.

      .
You as one of the most greedy person to get posted to somewhere and spend some tome with your beloved Sanja on the cost of the tax payers.
      :
If you are that powerful, as one who spent few years as Ambassador to Russia, you should have foreseen our ” near future fuel crisis”…

FUEL AND ENERGY crisis came into being not overnight… right ? Ambassadors are appointed by a govt, not just for superficial diplomatic relations, but also giving the opportunity to earn something for the benefit of the masses.
      :
I think if I may say so, our DIPLOMATs are just doing nothing… they just enjoy their tenure only… Indonesians, and some african country counterparts do their best succeeding new kind of trade pacts being signed during their terms.

Please think about your WASTERFUL years as a diplomat…. COMMENTERs over to you please discuss this issue in depth…

The way the next President of Sri Lanka is being selected currently is NOT RIGHT.
The people are sick of the current lot of parliamentarians. None of the candidates are SUITABLE to be the President. Ideally someone who is outside the political circle should be selected as the Interim President of Sri Lanka. We need an ELECTION to bring in new HONEST & CAPABLE parliamentarians with no criminal records.

    • 3
      1

      Yes Naman,

Let us have as President outside the 225,preferab;y a non political technocrat and cabinet of 15 technocrats with a road map for a system change and a recovery plan and a capacity to work as a team.

All 16; to have no political ambition to contest future elections, then only they will work to bring Sri Lanka out of the mess without any personnel reward.
Let the 225 sit in parliament and constitute oversight committees and monitor the progress of the technocrats

        SK,
“non political technocrat and cabinet of 15 technocrats”
I think you are forgetting that our last Prez described himself as a non-political technocrat, and his advisors like Channa Jayasumana, Padeniya, Weerawansa, plus the Admiral Professori all claimed to be technocrats.
If we need technocrats, they shouldn’t be from one particular community.

      Naman,
I agree that the current process of selecting President is utterly wrong because the former President was resigned because of the people were not happy about the current parliament. People wanted to give opportunity to this parliament whether they can unite together to form a government for the country and people, not for the political parties or political leaders influenced by different ideologies. The people did not chase former President and former Prime Minister for a fun game with peoples lives. Why cannot none of the political parties or leaders listened to the people?

      0

That was why the question “What next?” raised about the Go Home chant was raised. It is still relevant.
The Aragalaya got it right to ask for all 225 to go.
The Executive Presidency should go and let us not haggle over what a good president will look like.

DJ is focused on getting an ambassador posting (or a position in the foreign ministry), hope he bets on the right horse. Only glitch is that it will be a WFH (no passages, no moving expenses, no $ compensation) position as the country cannot afford to pay.

DJ is advancing a theory that SLPP was formed to fill in the left-of center gap created by Sirisena joining with UNP to form a government. Two parties or more form governments all over the world with their policies and characters intact. That’s how the SLFP and UNP were throughout the Maithri – Ranil government, pulling in the opposite directions. The reason for the formation of SLPP was to recapture power and keep it in the clan by fear mongering, minority bashing and stealing the nation’s wealth for future generations of the clan. Poor hapless masses are just a tool in their plan.

The Tiltle was a tell-tale. For that reason, I had skipped reading it, at first. Now that I have else to do, I read Dayan!
SLPP is Rajapaksas’ party. Once Rajapaksa opted for Ranil SLPP lost its attraction! SLPP is no more a political party; It is a political disgrace!
Come to think of it SLFP, UNP, or SLPP can no me be called political parties! Those are dens of political opportunists.

The ideology flowed from Solomon’s head, that is the Politics is talking and doing of what can be reaped from the opportunity that is in front of one. became a young vegetable during Siri Ma O tenure and matured during Chaitanya Ruling and have fruited something called Coronavirus during the Slap party regime. If Dullas want to wash off the sin, he made by writing the Mahindha Chaitanya for the Devil to wrap up enormous wealth good enough to put him as one within the world richest billionaires, Dullas should withdraw his candidacy and let the Ranil Evil to flush off the Slap Party down into the cesspool of Sirikota. But if the protestors want Ranil to be defeated, I do not have enough brain to think what can be done to that at this 11th hour. India has invested $3.5B to initiate the IMF negotiations go defeated. China wants to give $4.5B to defeat India and the IMF, together.

  • 6
    6

One way I can think is if IMF openly declare that they would not give a penny to Langkang if the Ranil is new Emperor of it, then we can ask the Sinhala Community, Tamil Community and Muslim community to get out in numbers and support the peaceful protestors to prevent Ranil being crowned as the emperor. So, the 8th grade Donkeys in the Parliament may think twice and change their minds of voting for Evil Emperor, Ranil. Until 20th everyone in the houses (other than children, and abilities deprived) should get to the road and make the protestors efforts success.

    Victory to protestors!

Last time, during Yahapalanaya, the Evil Emperor picked on America only having closed the Harbor sales deal with China and made PM Modi to come and open the Hospital he built in Diyatalawa, Dickoya, because America wanted to change the location of the Israel Embassy. He kicked on the butt of Ambassador Atul Keshab, and sent him out of his office, whom Evil was pretending to be his best friend (until he sold the Hangbangtota harbor to China). Later he went to Oxford and lectured to UK undergraduates about the tyranny of Colonial Britain. This time he has already started at the West on their sanction on Russia. During Amp. During Keshab time, Evil Renil taught American diplomats how to cook up Aappa Diplomacy, on a Rupavahini morning show. Sadly, Americans have not learned that yet. So, they failed to consult Evil Ranil before they imposed sanctions on Russia. The habit of a female dog (bitch) is it wags its tail while barking. Come on Evil Emperor. Gas in America(petrol) touched $5 a gallon. You have had the Russian plane released by overruling the court which blocked it according to international commercial laws. You are trying to negotiate with Russia to buy food and oil cheap. Why don’t use the opportunity and turn the table against your enemies? Buy food, oil from Russia, and pay in Rubles.

DJ, Only lasting solution is to have constitution without an executive president and have general elections as fast as possible. Citizen’s expression of electing the governing body is more important than letting this corrupt 225 choose who they wish to move and rob this nation.

According to the rumour mill Ranil & Dinesh (for PM) have already secured a majority. GR will return and retire after things cool down. On Ranil’s orders a suitable secure house has already been sought for him.

I am totally against the rogue Clause that was incorporated in the Constitution empowering Parliament to appoint an interim President for the duration of the term of the President who resigned mid-term.
Parliament should introduce a new amendment which stipulates that in the event of removal, resignation or death of the President, the Prime Minister will immediately become Acting President who should hold a Presidential Election within 60 days.
Anyway, as there is no other alternative, Parliament will “elect” an Interim President.
Honestly, I don’t mind anyone other than the incredibly stupid Rajapaksa offspring.
I am glad Dullas is contesting for the Interim President as there is no one else. Both Dullas and Dinesh wear the country on their sleeve. However, when the slave goverment was in power, Dinesh supported Ranil’s Constitutional Assembly and the abolition of Executive Presidency, and therefore, not reliable.
Ranil already said that he wished to bring in the 19A again which is to pave the way for the incredibly stupid Rajapaksa offspring who can never win a Presidential Election to become the excutive Prime Minister through bribes and intimidation.
All those who genuinely do not want another Rajapaksa in office, should choose Dullas.

Sri Lanka Parliamentarians should be ashamed to go for a vote to elect the Interim President. Insurrectionists who were mostly Millennials and Gen Z already disgraced the country. They proved to the world that they are primitive, politically immature and undemocratic.
The entire world is watching Sri Lanka right now for its entertainment. Therefore, Parliamentarians should stop fighting against each other and should agree to elect Dullas as the Interim President and Ranil as the Prime Minister, UNANIMOUSLY. Yes, Ranil. Both Ranil and Gotabhaya deserve appreciation for saving the country from a third insurrection and a possible foreign military intervention. As Ranil has already started talks for an economic recovery, he can still be the Finance Minister and maybe the State Minister for Defence. The country needs Dullas to stop; i) any move to abolish the Executive Presidency ii) selling off our national assets and iii) a comeback of the MCC and SOFA.
Without resorting to party politics, all Parliamentarians should do their utmost to make the country politically stable. Therefore, it is imperative to elect the Interim President and the Prime Minister UNANIMOUSLY.

The sinhalas can look forward to the experience of africans:

Malawi’s Attorney General Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda confirmed to the BBC that he had been extradited. He added that the Chinese citizen is due to appear in court on Monday in line with procedures after someone has been arrested.

The BBC Africa Eye documentary led to a promise from China to crack down on online racism against Africans, the South China Morning Post reported.

Bow Wow Beng Lim a CGTN reporter posted on an online web forum that all indians are NIGGERS! Do sinhalas who are begging for Hindustan help anything other than NIGGERS for the chinese despite any overtures to the contrary

You see what I mean? Dirty Tamil racism is alive and well. No amount of Aragalayas can remove that.

    It is all over.
    SLPP will vote Ranil in.
The same political class that destroyed Sri Lanka prevailed – notwithstanding all the protests.
    Nothing changed.
Aragalaya is the only option left to the people.
The young should keep it alive in a peaceful manner without providing an opportunity for yet another bloodshed.
Non-commissioned officers (other ranks) need to be made aware of what is at stake. Essentially, what the current Aragalaya is all about – Not to participate in a killing spree.

      Sunil Abey.
Where have you been all these days of drama in the country. Busy with your Rheostat eh?

I Agree Aragalaya is the only hope to usher in a new beginning
The more things change, the more they stay the same..no?……..

        Plato,
Left the Rheostat for a career of a keyboard warrior.
Perhaps, in keeping with what is left of my life.
Finally, the digital generation is awake. So, we may see meaningful changes over time.

      Sunil,
It is wrong to sacrifice another “Aragalaya” the Sinhalese young generation alone to loose their lifes in vein in the hands of brutal dictatorship. They are cunningly now changed the image of Aragalya as Fascist, Terrorists and now the so called international community changed their tone with the success of IMF. The experience of Tamil Youth armed struggle should tell you that international community declared LTTE only after they agreed for negotiation. The JVP insurgency lead the death of more than that from LTTE within two years. The people power should involve all the men and women, old and young, Tamils and Sinhalese, not only young.

Strategy has to be developed by plying with numbers and proper to elect a person from SLPP who do not agree with the Rajapakse dynasty, Moreover Ranil is the protector of the Rajapakse dynasty
He will postpone the elections. He has the support of at least 80 SLPP party movers. His descendent group does not like him , so are the protestors and opposition SJB, SLFP , Many Tamil Parties and JVP
Hence if there are two contestants namely Ranil the broker of the Rajapaksa family and Dallas Alagaperma from the SLPP from descendent group then there is an 80% chance Dallas can win
    See the figures below
SLPP descent nominee Dallas Alagaperma requires only 21 members’ support from SLPP to win
Hence there is a 90% probability
Provide he agrees to the 6 demands put forward by the protestors. Ranil agreed but I doubt whether he will implement it. He is under the control of the Rajapaksa family who has money
Protestors want to bring ethnic unity to overcome the economic problem. The expatriate population will invest if there is a guarantee by the new president to all six demands.
Ranil is not democratically legible to become president as he and his party lost the lections’.

Dirty? tamil racism resulted from FILTY sinhala racism and tamil genocide (eg Hitlerresque).sinhalas.

Also how dirty is tamil racism when tamilnadu is feeding and other aid to toiletless sinhalas

Also toilet cleaners was an adjective initially used against tamils by EE and I think Chiv. The problem with the sinhalas are they can give FILTH but cannot take it when the recipients returns the favours.

Also had nothing against the sinhalas until barbaric sinhala armed forces assaulted me and then gave money to the LTTE for revenge.

Just keep up the filthy sinhala racism and see what happens to sinhala land!!

Keep up the sinhala racism and the ceylon tamils will know what to do to sinhalas as happening to the Goat in singapore and internationally per ceylon tamils actions including in singapore,

Agree that racism was rampant in this goverment and even before and some are dissaapointed that the world order frowns on it.Derogative terms such as toilette nadu and muslim bashing was populist ploy.
Supporters of this please dont respond by saying im muslim or elamist(im neither) and it should not matter.
Its a joke going to Quatar after preventing muslim buriels….the list is endless and shameless.
Many lies are going to be exposed in the financial front

To cover up or Justify the facts by saying majority came here first may be disputed by turning back the pages of tectonic history when this land was part of India ….if you feel like it go for it too !
Sad the future of this country seems to be only in its past.
Im not an Indian bloke but begining to wish I was !!

If Dallas Alagaperma was the national organizer of SLPP and his contribution to the party should be valued. At the same, time SLPP should correct many mistakes committed by the Rajapakse family. They swindled the country, created ethical problems and they kept 75% of the budget with the minsters held by them, In addition, they cultivated ethnic bias to come to power. Hence many SLPP MP’s were against their action. The protestors want the entire Rajapakse to go and are angst those who support that family. GOTA brought in Ranil as a protector of the Rajapakse family. People will not accept it because the Economic problem was created by them using their hatred towards Tamil and Muslims. It has boomerang back on SLPP . If it is a party government Alagaperma can be President and Sajith can be PM and other party leaders should be important ministers. elections should be held within 2 years. All attempts should be made ASAP to reduce the powers of the President and resolve the ethnic crisis This will build confidence in the all-party government and investors will insist. Action to be taken to identify the looters and recover the money
Those SLPP MPs and the protectors of Rajapaksa dynasty will be rejected by the protestors

Dalas would have been talented at balancing SLPP reptiles.

Not Charlton house property, if divine forces destroyed MR and his kith and kin, people could make new hopes. So long MR chinthanaya exists in the country, not even little can be made towards the progress of the nation.
      .
However, for international relations, Dalasa would do nothing.

Need of the hour – to build consenus between internal and external Affairs. Kahakadayas should be made silent forever … exposinig their living high crimes in temples across the country. Over 80% are assumed to be child molesters. Those who offer their boy childreen to those temples should be banned without delay.

If propmt actions would not be taken to reubild the society, improving the awareness of the very people, sinking srilanka would be inevitable.

Politics in South Asian region is no different to their own garbage management. This is not the case to SOUTH EAST ASIAN countries. They are far more pragamitc about that own politics. That is why Vietnam is booming…. also in post-COVID period…

Nominating Dallas as a Candidate for President
It is well known that it is a number game with SLPP having about 145 members
Ranil is nominated MPO and his UNP party lost the elections
Gotabaya appointed him as PM bemuse Sajith refused to accept unless Gotabay resigns Sajith did not want to go against the protestor’s wash
A nominee outside SLPP as a candidate for President Post is very difficult to win if MO from SLPP agrees to contest. An agreement s reached between SLPP and SJB so that Sajith will be PM. This means even if some members from SLPP vote
For Ranil who is not a member of SLPP party as such Dallas with SJB combination has a very good chance to win. Anura from JVP has only 3 MP’s. He should join with Dallas and Sajith and strengthen the coalition.
