Something Toxic This Way Comes

By Tisaranee Gunasekara

“Terror continuous dark terror

against the fragile human land…” ~ Zbigniew Herbert (To Marcus Aurelius)

Had Sri Lanka a parliamentary system of governance, the Rajapaksas would have been out by now. Thanks to the executive presidency, a political resolution is impossible despite the churning crises, and the national nightmare is unlikely to end this side of 2024. As Nihal Jayawickrama reminds us in his recent Colombo Telegraph piece, a presidential election is constitutionally impossible until November 2023 and a parliamentary election until March 2023.

Even if the impossible happens, and Gotabaya Rajapaksas resigns, his successor will be chosen not by the electorate but by the parliament. Since the 20th Amendment retained the term-limit provision, Mahinda Rajapaksa cannot be the president again. In a parliamentary vote, the SLPP’s nominee is likely to win, especially since the bitterly divided opposition will field at least two candidates. If so, Basil Rajapaksa – not Sajith Premadasa or Anura Kumara Dissanayke – will be the next president.

This unbreakable constitutional logjam raises questions about oppositional tactics. Is this the time for massive public demonstrations? Other than one-upmanship and pleasing the faithful, what is the purpose of such demonstrations? You don’t need to tell a nation of queues that the government has failed. And transporting tens of thousands of people to Colombo using hired buses when the ordinary voter is waiting in a queue for a few litres of fuel is not the most empathetic, or politically savvy thing to do, is it?

The collective public temper is frayed. The safety catches are off. The slightest accidental incident can give rise to an explosion. An outbreak of violence will not bring down the government; it will merely add another layer of pain onto an already suffering populace. If there’s shooting, the victims will be ordinary people, the leaders will be whisked to safety.

Instead of theatrics, the opposition should use the opportunity afforded by the unprecedented multiple crises to chart a new course for Sri Lanka. This is not the time for stirring slogans, but for workable ideas. How can the economy be resuscitated without heaping more burdens on the poor and the middle classes? How can democracy be restored, together with values necessary for its survival, starting with tolerance and rational thinking? How can ethnic and religious wounds be healed, and a Lankan identity created on the basis of equality? Perhaps most importantly, how best to use this moment to make a majority of Sinhala-Buddhists understand that the country became stranded in this socio-economic desert because they chased the mirage of a Sinhala-Buddhist supremacist paradise?

The emergency Indian loan will not resolve the economic crisis but it can provide an ephemeral respite, even create the impression of a kind of stabilisation. Whether the Rajapaksa’s shift towards the Indian orbit outlasts the loan is uncertain; they may get what they can from Delhi while sending out feelers to Beijing. But if conditions compel the Rajapaksas to cleave to India, a provincial council election is likely this year. If a PC or PS poll is held and the SLPP manages to scrape through, the current oppositional surge will collapse into a damp end. And the Rajapaksas, despite everything, will gain a new lease of life, at least until 2024.

They knew what they were doing

Call them Delphic Oracle moments. In his one and only media conference, more baby pool than wind-stirred sea, Gotabaya Rajapaksa was asked two questions on the economy, about funding his generous election promises and about the debt crisis. He had no answers to give. That failure should have served as a massive red light about the emptiness of the man.

The adults at that media conference, who intervened to field the many questions the candidate couldn’t handle, obviously knew of the blankness beneath the glitzy makeup. Yet they persisted in depicting a political placebo as a panacea for all Lankan ills. Fearful of another no-show or worse, they barred the candidate from making any impromptu remarks confining him to a teleprompter for the campaign’s duration.

A word about Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s managerial skills, another qualification that was much touted during the 2019 campaign. The UDA never made a lost in its existence, until Gotabaya Rajapaksa took it over in 2006. From 2006-2011, under his command, the UDA suffered a colossal loss of Rs.1.23 billion.

Elections involve hyperbole, presidential elections especially so. But the con that was perpetrated by the Rajapaksa family and their political and business acolytes during the presidential election of 2019 was unprecedented in Lanka’s election history. Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s handlers did not exaggerate the good and downplay the bad. They created a whole new myth. Our Hero who Labours was no different from the Cobra who came from the Nagalokaya bearing Sacred Relics.

In this political pageant of lies and deception Wimal Weerawansa and Udaya Gammanpila played a star role second only to Mahinda Rajapaksa. The Rajapaksas perpetrated the con because they needed to keep power within the family. Their political and business acolytes participated because they too wanted a share of the political and financial pie. If anyone of them now claims that he/she was honestly deceived, such persons must be placed under restraint as non compose mentis. They certainly cannot be trusted to show the Right Path to the Whole Country.

The Weerawansa-Gammanpila duo was not mad. They just didn’t understand that in a feudalist mental universe, kings are kings and underlings, however trusted or even beloved, are underlings, with an unbridgeable social gap separating them. With dual citizens barred from electoral politics and Basil Rajapaksa refusing to give up his American citizenship, the duo might have seen a space at the very zenith of power for themselves, if they display total fealty to Mahinda and Gotabaya Rajapaksa. With that hope, they helped Mahinda Rajapaksa sell his singularly unsuitable brother to the country as peerless presidential material and helped the Rajapaksas gain a near two-thirds majority at the parliamentary election.

By the time the parliamentary election was held, the seeds of the current crisis were sown and the first shoots visible to the naked eye. The massive tax cuts came in November-December 2019 and the money printing binge commenced in February 2020. The results were set down in black and white in the Mid-year Fiscal Position Report 2020, presented to parliament by Mahinda Rajapaksa.

According to 2000 first quarter figures, tax revenue decreased by 26% (143 billion rupees), fiscal deficit increased by 24% (88 billion rupees), and public investment decreased by 44% (95 billion rupees). Recurrent expenditure, inflation and money supply increased while private sector credit growth decreased. Revenue collection too declined by 20% (Rs. 121 billion). To anyone with an iota of intelligence the danger signals would have been clear. Yet it was after this dismal performance, and after the regime reduced health expenditure in the midst of a pandemic, Wimal Weerawansa compared Gotabaya Rajapaksa to Mahathir Mohamad.

With the election won, the Rajapaksas moved swiftly to ensure familial succession. The Weerawansa-Gammanpila duo probably realised their error when they read the draft of the 20th Amendment. Their opposition to the Amendment was focused not on its anti-democratic core but on the dual citizenship clause. Despite their cacophony, Mahinda and Gotabaya Rajapaksa stood firm. The malcontents rescinded their opposition after a meeting with a ‘sensitive’ Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Did the president hint that Brother Basil had no interest in entering parliament? We will never know. What is knowable is that Weerawansa-Gammanpila duo openly discontent once Basil Rajapaksa entered parliament and was made finance minister. Even so, they didn’t willingly sacrifice their portfolios. They crossed the Rubicon unknowingly when they launched a broadside against Basil Rajapaksa in public. It was Mahinda Rajapaksa himself, who explained why Gotabaya Rajapaksa gave these two loyal underlings their congé. The pair worked hard to form the government, the premier admitted; but that didn’t give them the right to break the government. Since government is familial rule, the message was clear.

The duo will not be taken back unless they grovel. Since principles are as unknown to them as they are to their erstwhile political masters, the pair might yet take the low road back, redefining servility as patriotic necessity, again. Such reconfiguration is the better outcome. It would be far worse if the pair enter the oppositional space (within and outside parliament), carrying with them the plague bacillus of ethno-religious racism.

Keeping the oppositional space safe

The recently exposed plan to arrest former CID director (and the man considered by the president as his bête noir) Shani Abeysekara demonstrates, once again, that the current function of the PTA is not keeping the country safe but punishing those who incur Rajapaksa ire. In this context, comments by Jusitce Menaka Wijesundara in Hejaaz Hisbullah’s bail application makes interesting reading. “…four decades have passed and the PTA has strayed far away from its historical context. The PTA, if in its application and implementation creates a vicious cycle of abuse, the very purpose of the statute will be defeated…” (The Sunday Times – 20.2.2022).

The time to get rid of the PTA is here. Sajith Premadasa’s public pledge to do so is an important – and an extremely positive – development. No less seminal is the fact that none of his competitors within or outside the SJB tried to score racist political points by criticising his stance. The composite demonstrates one of the most heartening facts about the opposition today. It may not always be anti-racist, but it does not peddle in racism or engage in outrage-stoking as the Rajapaksas did during their four and a half years out of power.

Ethno-religious racism was the main plank of the Rajapaksa comeback platform. Here an outsized role belonged to the Weerawansa-Gammanpila duo, with one playing Alfred Rosenberg and the other (a facilely more sophisticated) Steve Bannon. An excellent case in point was the witch hunt launched against Dr. Shafi Sahabdeen in the perilous time between the Easter Sunday massacre and the 2019 presidential election.

Wimal Weerawansa entered the fray by claiming that Dr. Shafi had waged ‘A War of Wombs’ (gharbasha uddaya) against Sinhalese. Addressing the media from the new Ground Zero of the ‘sterilisation wars,’ the Kurunegala Hospital, he accused Dr. Shafit of committing ‘ethnic-extermination’ by waging a war on the wombs of Sinhala mothers. Udaya Gammanpila repeated these accusations, claiming that Dr. Shafi performed ‘forceful sterilisations’ akin to ‘genocide’. He also stated that laws should be brought to impose death penalty for this crime, claiming that many people consider Dr. Shafi to be a ‘more brutal terrorist’ than even Zahran Hashim.

If this duo enters the oppositional ranks, they will use their gift-of-the-gab to gain a prominent place and colour the anti-Rajapaksa space in their noxious hues. Their egregious influence may spread even further, injecting deadly doses of nativism and economic irrationality into oppositional discourse and even policies.

As economic pain heightens, the Rajapaksas will have no choice but to resort to outrage stoking and minority bashing to retain their Sinhala-Buddhist base. In their current Modi-friendly phase, Muslims might form the likeliest target. The Rajapaksas may look at the recently concluded Indian state elections and see a path forward for themselves in the BJP’s worryingly successful performance (especially in the UP led by the Yogi Adityanath). They would also note that the BJP achieved these successes despite grossly mishandling the pandemic and despite growing economic woes such as high unemployment. Incidentally, India’s Lankan High Commissioner Milinda Moragoda paid a call on the current head of RSS at that Hindu alt-right organisation’s headquarters last month.

Given the possibility of new round of minority-bashing by the government, keeping the oppositional space safe from the pollutants of racism assumes added importance. As Prof. Rajan Hoole points out in the Audrey Ribera Memorial Lecture (a woman of rare courage, compassion, and grace who gave shelter and help to the persecuted in a dangerous time), politics of anti-minoritism (in the form of the Citizenship Act which disenfranchised Upcountry Tamils of Indian origin en masse) was the original sin of the Lankan state, a sin committed while still unborn. We now have a chance of ending the resultant vicious downward spiral. If that historic opportunity is abandoned in favour of narrow and unenlightened self-interest, it will be a tragedy of epic proportions, no less than electing Gotabaya Rajapaksa in 2019 and enabling the SLPP gain a near two-thirds majority in 2020.

      Cugan,
“…sadly it’s being selected and elected for certain race only while neglecting the orher”

What you say is not true. Tamils, Muslims and Malays were in the Governments since the time of independence. After the cutoff point was reduced from 12.5% to 5.00% by R. Premadasa to get minority votes, minorities became ‘King Makers’.

“Sinhala only came destroyed the education,”

      BS!
Sinhala only did not destroy the education. It gave the opportunity for indigenous Sinhalayo who were oppressed by British with the help from Tamils in Yapanaya to go for higher education.

I don’t have any idea who you are.
          .
However, the red DISLIKES that you keep getting are symptomatic of the idiocy of Lankans. And these from persons who call themselves intellectuals on the basis of their having a smattering of English. It is hardly credible that those thumbs DOWN came from persons other than regular readers of CT.

There, I’ve committed hara-kiri. These guys will start giving me thumbs DOWNS – never mind! Your meaning is clear to me. That is to say, only English mattered, but that tool was denied to the majority of our population.

OTOH, I acknowledge the validity of oc’s query: does everybody need a knowledge of English? The people who have DOWN thumbed you are likely to be those who imagine that this language which we are here using has some strange mystique.

Tisaranee, as you say, having any hope of a change of presidency other than from the Rajapaksha gang before the next elections which is 3-4 years away, is futile. And you say currently the collective public temper is frayed and the safety catches are off. True, the immense sufferance people undergoing is already red hot and you can imagine the sizzling heat when the forthcoming hyper prices take effect due to the recent floating of the Rupee against the USD. Yet, what will happen in that ‘accidental explosion’? R gang will certainly use every possible force and suppress any kind of uprising. They will at least be supported by half of that 6.9m idiots, who still worship the pohottu party. World powers including the USA or even India will never recognize any government erupted out of riots or uprising, except in the middle east! Besides, do we really have capable leaders in the opposition to lead us out of this mess?? Aren’t our people in an absolute catch 22 situation?

    “…politics of anti-minoritism…”
    —-
If Sinhale/Sri Lanka had politics of anti-minoritism, how the hell Tamil politicians in Yapanaya managed to pass Vaddukkodai Resolution with a manufactured history of Sinhale to create a separate State within Sinhale, declared war against the Government of Sri Lanka and Sinhala nation, urged Tamils to take up arms and fight until they achieve their objective leading to formation of Tamil terrorist outfit LTTE that massacred Sinhala Buddhists for three decades?

What Tamil politicians did tantamount to treason. By proposing to create a separate State within Sinhale, Tamil politicians violated the Constitution of Sri Lanka punishable by stripping civic rights and confiscating movable and immovable property. But the Government of Sri Lanka has allowed these guys to run around scot-free talking separatism.

      EE,
“Politicians in Yapanaya managed to pass Vaddukoddai Resolution”
      And,
“What Tamil politicians did tantamount to treason?”
You may well have a moot point?!
Then what do you think of the ‘Sinhala Only’ act and the repealing of Section 29 or part thereof of the Soulbury constitution and Ceylon Independence Order-in-Council of 1948?
Was it not also act of Treason?
First act discrimination against minorities – Tamils, Muslims, Burghers, Malays, Sindhis, Parsis – you please name all except the Sinhalese inhabitants of this blessed land!!!
Well the minorities (mainly Tamils and Muslims/Malays) thought that the majority may realise ‘Their Folly’ and correct it in due course and time??!! Fools they say never realise their own folly, instead they attribute the cause and reason to all others.
Hence, continue to flounder along, committing the very same mistakes in different forms and meander like ‘Drunken Sailor’, not correcting their folly, from one misadventure to the next!!!!
They did, in due course and progress of matter and men, made the Major language of the Tamil and Muslim minorities – Tamil – also an Official Language and English as link Language (mostly to improve educational resources – reference and research material).
      That was 36 years ago!!!

What do we have now circa 2018 and beyond??
Name boards, government directives etc., are coming out in Sinhalé only, or limited to Sinhalé and English, or to pay tribute to Chinese generosity in only Sinhalé, English and Mandarin!!!
The CONSTITUTION has been dumped in the BIN!!!
No wonder, not long ago, that some worthy termed the SL CONSTITUTION, a “Race (betting sheet) Pathirana” adducing to the number of amendments in such short period, mostly to accommodate the personal wishes of the rulers and their VISTAS of PROSPERITY (VoP do not mistake for VIP)!!!
Do not subscribe to that sordid thinking, as acting against the provision of Basic Law – Treason
Your understanding, as to why this is so, would be illuminating, but at same time ‘Mind Boggling’!!
Is this not acting “against the provisions of the ‘Basic Law’ of this country” and TREACHOROUS and BETRAYAL of the Sri Lankan Constitution???
What are we going to do about it???
We are not responsible for this mess!!!!!
Solution for all time, found by the Master Minds of Sri Lankans!!!
      De facto, delete constitutional provisions!!!

“…was the original sin of the Lankan state, a sin committed while still unborn.”

Original sin was committed by ‘Suddas’ who brought millions of Dravidians as slaves and exploited their labor to make money. Hundreds died during walking from Mannarama to central part of the country. Those laborers had to work 12 hours a day just for two ‘Roties’.
Dislocating people and taking them to another country to exploit their labor is a gross violation of human rights. Good that there was no UNHRC at that time. Guys who blame the Government and Sinhalayo do not talk about that part of the story.

Indigenous Sinhalayo are not responsible for the sins committed by ‘Suddas’.

“Indigenous Sinhalayo are not responsible for the sins committed by Suddas”
      Very well said!
One can see a stereotype developing out of this.
Present Economic debacle or downturn (mildly put) in fact disaster in country’s independence history 70+ years ago!!
There are “NO TAKERS”, i mean RESPONSIBILITY!!!
Even if the cause was by the elder sibling (who was then President is current PM) when in governance resorting to UNVIABLE borrowings from China and commercial entities 2006 to 2014, repayments thereof??!!!!
Perhaps the incumbent head of government (then defense secretary), the Finance Minister, Irrigation Minister and sports Minister holding responsibility for 70% of current government budget allocation??!!!!!
This is a queer and significant stand of “NOT TAKING RESPONSIBILITY”, collectively or severally???
“I AM NOT THE CAUSE OR RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS MESS”???!!!
2 cabinet ministers were stood down for speaking against the ‘purported’ collective decision of the Cabinet!!!
One Country One Law, is the repetitive slogan!! For whom??
This (Not Taking responsibility and accountability) seems to be a ‘malaise’ of the indigenous ‘Sinhale’, as one would like to phrase it??!!
      Who is DISOWNED??!!

Things are toxic already, but with the nation turning against these scoundrels, and angry protests, they will now make desperate deals with the devil, to get out of this dire situation, putting us in deep doo doo even more. I agree with Tisaranee that this so call deals with India, will only make these racists even more anti Muslim/minority, in their effort to make Modi pleased that he has fellow islamaphobes in the Rajapaksa regime. Opening the door to Modi/India will be inviting poisonous snakes into our country. The Rajapaksas have failed this country, and the years of arrogance shown towards foreign nations, accusing many of “interfering” in our country, have resulted in them eating crow, and bringing out the begging bowls. Now it looks like we are looking for help in all the wrong places.

It would be a great thing if the Rajapaksa crooks had their assets and properties worldwide frozen too, just like Putin and his oligarchs.

An interesting read about the Sri Lankan oligarchs:
    https://www.icij.org/investigations/pandora-papers/sri-lanka-rajapaksa-family-offshore-wealth-power/?utm_campaign=Sprout&utm_content=Pandora+Papers&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter

Nandasena is clueless, a horrible failure, and he has appointed crooks, felons, and war criminals, (totally unqualified and inexperienced) to run this country, and they predictably failed the people, who now are crying that their children are starving, and in the darkness. The generations of Rajapaksas meanwhile live in the lap of luxury, in their air conditioned mansions, travel abroad to shop and manage their ill gotten gains, and they do not have to stand in long lines to get their basic necessities, like we do.
We will be the Zimbabwe of Asia.

Sri Lankans got what they voted for….unfortunately those who did not vote for this incompetent and corrupt family, are also paying the price.

If Gota resigns, hook, or by crook Mahinda will become the President. All he has to do is to go to his slave Supreme Court and get a ruling that he is not contesting but he is becoming the President by default. As we have seen in the recent past the Supreme Court decisions appear to be written in a Rajapakse kitchen. If this fails he will even promote his dumb son Namal Baby to be the next President or PM. Its time JVP and SJB join hands and form a coalition with one party taking over the President’s post and the other party PM’s post. If this happens some of the SLPP and SLFP MPs will vote for these two parties if not we are done for a very long time.

TG, your articles are so refreshing and factual. In today’s Silly Lanka, amidst two senior citizens dying after standing for houres to get food and gas, exams canceled because there is no paper to print , and garbage may not be collected soon. Sir says he is not responsible, Namal holidaying in Maldives says we just cannot hide from miseries, WW, UD and VN are continuing with their political acrobatics, Rajapaksas with their two decades of lies and Retards cannot do anything about it. At least one person out there may find solace looking at the family miseries. According to Lankan constipation Rajapaksas now cannot move either forward or backward. 1) Our covenant man RW knows it all, Rajapaksas under pretext of joint opposition did everything to screw the govt and later Pissu Sira joined the party and at their urging created bonfires and backdoor deals.2) If Rajapaksas are forced to stay that may eventually drive public to seal their political future for good. The way things are, public may end up hating them so much so anyone with that name will never be elected. 3) All the lies they fed during RW time is now turning real for them, bankruptcy, selling assets, empty treasury, begging countries, going to IMF, going after India/ West, Geneva and many more.

The Weerawansa – Gammanpila duo seemingly has not an iota of shame or honour as the writer correctly observes; yet the duo have been very popular among the hoi polloi. Is that due to utter stupidity? If so, has the Sri Lankan population any hope that this system that rewards crime and punishes truth telling will ever be dismantled? Elections are a proven farce. Both major parties merely take turns at the trough of public wealth to fatten themselves. The third alternative scores just about 3% of the popular vote, although they have the most rational and sincere profile in parliament. With galloping inflation and vastly oppressive public life, it could be a mere matter of time before all hell breaks loose on the streets. What then? Does an emerging SL administration need international recognition to legitimize its authority, even if the people have ushered them in?

Highways lately introduced to people s use are from previous govt/ suwasariya ambulances were from them/ pay hikes by 10k were from them/ above all the huge price reductions of medicine relieved the people. GSP plus and other concessions were regained and fuel prices were lower/ all in all they did them amidst cover Rajapakshe huge debts. .
Our people are no grateful/ they deserve what they are compelled to face up today / good tiddence to bad rubbish 😶😶😶😶😶😶😶
Atleast today the bugger should see it right that they the people are not stupid as appeared to be. Mahinda s lips would allow him saying truth/ never the bugger deserves an express move to the hell/ this man is the cancer of this nation/ 😎🐕🐃😡😡😡

Since Basil of the Kaputas govt, became naked before India, they have been busy with their propaganda war against China.
        :

        .
Struggling and falling dead people at ques at run-out pertrol stations prove today, that it is the stupidiest thing to have allowed SONs of bitches of Rajapkashe family be back to power.
        .
Good riddance to bad rubbish. All these were not overlooked also prior to NOV 2019.
        .
Nobody would buy it today, if they put entire blame on the COVID crisis. Nor would they be able to paint the picture in terms of having done their best in VACCINATION projects. All in all, Nepal, Bangalisdesh, India and several others in SA countries have managed COVID better, and they have also managed their economices a way better than ballige puthas led SRILANKA GOVT.

May people in my country be blessedw with SOME WISDOM, we should get together to stand against the high criminals and punish them by electing a good government until 2024.

None of the Countries—India/Western Countries/China has Any real concerns about what is happening to them economically. We the SL citizens MUST take charge of our destiny. This can be done only with we (ALL) standing together without any ethnic or religious DIFFERENCES. The politicians who aren’t corrupt and are able should lead us. Ideally if we can get Anura Dissanayake+Eran Wickremasinghe+Rasamanickam to be in charge for the recovery of our Motherland , we may see the emancipation of our country

Things will get so bad ……… the Rajapakses will be lucky to escape with their lives.

The people will break into pols/looters houses and drag out the stolen loot …… the army and the police will join in …….it has all happened before …… just another page from human-history………

Meanwhile try to enjoy life before it ends all too briefly …….. life is nasty, brutish and short ……… too long for EE …….

Planning to tour Arches National Park, Jackson Hole on Motorbikes with the better-half.

Native, how would you feel riding pillion with a butch woman? Will your elevated male-ego feel every bump on the road?

EE what is the difference between Zen Buddhism and your Sinhalese-Buddhism? ….. You get a Bulto if you answer …….. it’s the the same as the difference between a Harley Davidson and a BMW bike ………find it in Zen And The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance ……..

    Here’s to life!

No offence, I am not interested in riding with Kamala Harris.
If that is what you meant.

This idea that we cannot get rid of this curse until 2024 because of a constitution is shear stupidity. We absolutely must get rid of them ASAP. The nation is being hit not just by the Rajapakshe greed and brutality it is facing external shocks of war and dare I say Global warming induced food shortages. These scoundrels in power have no clue about any of these problems much less how to fix them. Furthermore it is now becoming quite clear that the policies which got us here are by no means an accident. They have been secretly dictated with absolutely no empathy to wipe out this nations population accept for a few Oligarchs. Grovelling starving and dying populations are easy to control. They will do anything just for some food. That is the theory behind this nasty family rule. Time to think out of the box. I will give you one possibility of getting rid of the scoundrels. Go back to the day Gotler handed over his nominations. He was still a US citizen and ineligible to run for office. The commissioner of elections and all the other major candidates let him get away with an illegal act. Use it as your weapon. Throw the nomination out and he becomes an illegal userper.

After reading Tisaranee, I feel a little hope for the opposition, although they too just before the presidential election came out against prosecuting war criminals in uniform.

What do you think of the half-baked decision on Palm Oil plantations ? This is a commodity that gives a premier return in the international market. Malaysia ,Indonesia are making good money on it.

Our leader says the oil palm is bad for the environment.

In that case why are other countries ( more developed and more intelligent than us) developing palm oil ?

It is bad for the environment. Read about the destruction in Malaysia and Indonesia

The problem is not with the Rajapakses, Premadasas or Wickramasinghes but with the so called people.

Take Ranil, a man who has been PM so many times , travelled to every country and conference in the world ( First class travel and 7 star hotels-representing a poor country) , still having his supporters. The UNP did not win a single seat, 98% of the UNP supporters have left him, yet he talks of IMF, National consensus, Ukraine, EU etc.

This kind of talk is aimed at the half-baked and incompetent Colombo elite ( the few with him) who have never met other people who have read on these subjects

When there is no brilliance, BS is a good substitute

Deepthi, your fly is wide open….zip it up!!
You say “….The problem is not with the Rajapakses, Premadasas or Wickramasinghes but with the so called people….”
Then you start hammering Wickramasinghe, which is your favourite ball game.
Not a single word about Rajapaksha gang who ruled 13 out of last 17 years and bankrupted the country to this pit bottom level….!!

        Jit,
.”Then you start hammering Wickramasinghe, which is your favourite ball game.
Not a single word about Rajapaksha gang who ruled 13 out of last 17 years and bankrupted the country to this pit bottom level…”

This is common also on SOCIAL MEDIA platforms. People at large behave yet today, not wanting to attack most abusive man of mlechcha politics – MAHIDNARajapakshe. Elephant is in the room, nobody has the guts to talk about…. This was also the case in MUGABE led Zimbabwe.
        .
They are still very scared of attacking REAL HIGH CRIMINALS – who are none other than RAJAPAKSHES. Had MAHINDA resigned in sl active politics, no doubt, former govt could continue their mission to the end as promised before our beloved late Rev. Sobitha Thero.

        Jit,
“Deepthi, your fly is wide open….zip it up!!”
How can a troll with no pants have a zip? His nudity was exposed long ago. His game is Ranil- bashing, because he sees RW as the biggest threat to the Rajapaksas.
Watch the bottom of the page. The guy doesn’t have the cojones to get in a debate.

OC, you mean he is caught in the act with no pants on…!! ROFL….
His contract with the Rajapaksha gang is to keep bashing RW while being careful not to hit a single word at them…..

This is no defence of Ranil, but how can one claim things like
:”Take Ranil, a man who has been PM so many times”
He was severely disrupted by a President on the two occasions where he could do something.
One thing in his favour is that he believed in freedom of expression more than any other leader of his time.

Blind alias HLD, your typical vocabulary. Modaya distorting history while hiding in australia and surviving on tax payers money. If you have any decency first come back and join the polima. The portuguease blood in you still haunting you. And having married to a tamil women your jealousy further making you anti tamil. You will no doubt die like this in australia. If not for Indian buddhism the story would have been entirrely different and your Mahanama would have never been able to write mahavamsa. Hindu Buddhsim made all the difference. Moron Blind tell me whether a single person there who is practicing real buddhsim? Look at Mahintha, being greeted in Jaffna, running from one temple to other, not welcome any where. Isnt he ashamed of him. First he must settle the starving sinhalayos who are dying in queues. You Blind moron, arent you ashamed of writing the same bull shit over and over again while no one cares for you. There is nothing called a sinhala or sinhalayos but a blend of all south Indian and naga, yaksa blends with veddhas. Vijaya kathawa is another bull shit like your usual kathawa. But yet this Kuveni’s curse haunting dukka deepa appears reliable.

‘Name boards, government directives etc., are coming out in Sinhalé only, or limited to Sinhalé and English,’
    .

You mean that all these years while the Tamils were complaining of racism, these boards were in Tamil too?

      S
Governments respected the law thus far. Even under Sinhala Only post-1956 there was respect shown fir Tamil by successive governments at least in policy.
There was, however, increasing difficulty in getting things done in Tamil since 1960s.
Tamil was made official language in 1987.
Should not the law be respected?

We should take up on Thiha’s suggestion. NGR was an AMERICAN CITIZEN at the time of nomination for electing the President of SL. Hence he should be disqualified from his job ASAP. Those who facilitated him (? Ranil.W.)to get the SL passport and the Election commissioner should answer and the Supreme Court take up the case asap.

So they are shorting the currency. The currency is the leverage they are using to destrabalise the island. If the troubles start and riots begin they win. Change over to Bitcoin currecy as done by one or more countries in South America. Then let the world know ASAP the real history of the island. The Buddhist trail will inject $USD 26 billion to the economy.

      Jambu,
506 million people around the world practice Buddhism as a religion, which would represent roughly 6.6% of the world’s total population.
So, according to you, each of them will have to come here and spend 52,000 USD each?
Isn’t the point of Buddhism “letting go” of things like wealth? Maybe Sinhala Buddhism is different.

OC, if a person wants to fight Rajapakse corruption he must be honest himself.

You cannot fight black forces , being black or even grey yourself.

Whenever Ranil is in power he goes to Davos . For this pretentious man rubbing shoulders with the rich and mighty of the world is orgasmic, although he himself intellectually and his country materially is very far from that league.

Who accompanied Ranil during these trips to Davos and who bore the costs ? And more important what were the costs ( , first class travel, drinks, Chocolates and dinners )What did the country gain ?

Were there any secret Sri Lankan Swiss bank account holders among the Ranil group ?

Please find out. Your man is as black as the Rajapakses. Namal surfs in Male , Ranil does it in Bali( in an effeminate way !) .

    What is the difference ?

If Basil went to Davos, even the kaputas there would die laughing.

      Deepthi,
When MR went to the UN Gen assy, didn’t he stay in 7 star hotel with whole Jing Bang – plane load.
      Why not worry about that.
      Is that Ok?
