Speak John (Kerry), Like Cochise

First of all, welcome to Sri Lanka. Don’t worry, it’s all heart and not courtesy. This country has embraced one and all. Invader, interferer, brigand, smuggler, embezzler, immigrant, condescending missionary determined to ‘save’ the heathen, marauder, city-sacker, control-freak, you name it, we got them all.

This you must know: when we say ‘friend’ we mean it. It is not diplo-speak. We don’t refer to ‘long standing friendly relations’ even as we plot control and extraction. We don’t advocate, insist and enforce with or without the stated or unsaid ‘this is for your own good’. We recognize all this, though. We know that power lies in the ability to make others inhibit our version of their reality as Philip Gourevitch observed in his collection of essays on Rwanda, ‘We wish to inform you that tomorrow we will be killed with our families’.

So, dear John, let us be honest with one another.

Your country hasn’t exactly been friendly to Sri Lanka in recent times. You’ve used friendship-rhetoric of course in Geneva and elsewhere but it is pretty clear that when you say you are prompted by friendly concerns to take up positions that are opposed by the said ‘friend’ it amounts to being presumptuous if not downright arrogant. Your country has been friend to other countries. The good intentions are not limited to Sri Lanka. These are documented. They are known. They are not pretty.

Secretary of State John KerryNow John, you cannot blame us for finding it difficult to blank out such things. Histories matter. They are remembered. Past actions help understand present words and possible futures, pretty or otherwise. Nevertheless it would be foolish to think that people cannot change. People do acquire new knowledge, they can learn, they can change. We can hope. We will.

Since we are friends, John, we will not insist that you retract your perhaps ill-informed statement on Sri Lanka which, if it was deliberate distortion amounts to pernicious uttering typical (sadly) of much that issues from the State Department.

Since we are friends, John, we would ask if you characterize your involvement in Afghanistan as a ‘war with Afghans’. We would ask if you are at war with Iraqis, with those of the Islamic faith (in all countries where the ISIS, Al Qaeda and other such groups operate). We could ask if you are at war with African Americans in your own country. You get the drift, right?

So we won’t ask you to apologize for describing Sri Lanka’s long struggle against terrorism as a ’30 year war with Tamils’. We have already asked our Foreign Minister why on earth he didn’t educate you on this when you described it in those terms. We would just remind you on how your President, Barack Obama, spoke of the engagement with the ISIS, ‘a war on a terrorist group, not on the people it claimed to represent’. Again, we note that given histories the jury is out on the question of which side the USA is really on. We say this in friendship and because friends should be open with one another.

So if you want to be friends, John, you should not hold your cards close to your chest. If you don’t know, it is no shame to admit the fact. You can ask about terrorism and you can ask about Tamils. You can compare and contrast. You can study demographic realities and you can peruse history. You can conclude about the legitimacies of contradictory claims. All this only if there’s humility. Take that our and the word ‘friendship’ has to be followed by a question mark, you will no doubt agree.

You may have heard, dear John, of a Native American leader by the name of Cochise. He was an Apache. He once said ‘you must speak straight so that your words may go as sunlight into our hearts’. He added, ‘Speak Americans…I will not lie to you; do not lie to me.’

Speak, John. Like Cochise.

Speak Malinda, like Cochise, when you’re speaking about the current political developments in Sri Lanka – instead of taking a jaunidiced view and jabbering like the despicable Weerawansa, Gammanpila, Gnanasara et al.

Truth hearts Malinda. Expect brick-bats hurling at you in the coming days and weeks. Loads of it. Including from those who wish we still were a British colony named Ceylon…

Perhaps Mr. Seneviratne will care to comment on the fact that he recently admitted uttering damaging and blatant untruths about Dr. Devanesan Nesiah and UNEQUIVOCALLY withdrew those statements in a court of law (post-Rajapaksa of course!)
Talk about pots calling kettles black in the matter of speaking the truth! Mr. S.should embark on writing the definitive tome on the subject and maybe his friends of the Gratiaen Committee will find a way to recognize more of his fiction.

The Shills, the White-washers, the Liars, the Crooks, the Criminals, the Cronies, and the other undesirables in a civilized society, was part and parcel of the Medamulana Mahinda Rajapaksa Regime and its dictatorship.

They do NOT speak like Cochise. If they did, there would have been no need for the Bribery Commission to be working day and night with 1,500 cases and with the police with multitudes of Criminal cases, courtesy of the Mahinda Rajapaksa, regime, for whom Malinda Senevirana performed as a Shill and White-washer.

“I will not lie to you; do not lie to me.”

Malinda’s article is a good read for John Kerry.

It is an even better read for Malinda himself.

      Cheers!

    Malinda

No doubt you very good explaining your viewpoint.

The point of contention is, you would like to see John apologizing for describing Sri Lanka’s long struggle against terrorism as a ’30 year war with Tamils’. Malinda, if you want to be friend with the USA and its allies you should let them to express the way they saw the happing in SL in that period, to be honest. The statement was not contrived, but spontaneous, perhaps that is what Managala did (could able to) not correct it.

He didn’t lie to you and you shouldn’t lie to him. If you are trying to put two issues “long struggle against terrorism” and “30 years war with Tamils” together in one sentence, you wish to see him describing the happening as “30 years war with terrorists”, you prefer terrorists to Tamils there, which in itself is not right. As you fully aware this terrorists categorization came into being for LTTE only after the 9/11, and which is not 30 years but 7 years and 8 months, or maybe even less as there was a time gap before the listing was put out and therefore it will not make it ok either. On the other hand, the “war with Tamils” has some substance compared to your attempt of lumping your 30 years as terrorism, as LTTE can be considered as a sub-set of Tamils. Note, I am not a fan of LTTE, however, things should be put in place in correct perspective.

And, I don’t need to lecture you on how LTTE had emerged, it was the result of a series of provocations of state terrorism unleased on Tamils. I guess, you could not see, but the USA saw how low abiding Tamils were, prior to these 30yeras. If you don’t want to do a Dayan, what you should do is to understand what he really means by saying it to make you all feel, particularly GoSL, and I know current GoSL gets that point to date.

Grow up Malinda, read 21 year old Thusiri Wanniarachchi’s opinions published today… You criticize US actions, wars in in foreign countries, as inhumane and justify your Gov actions, war against minority tribe in your own country using fighter planes.. Haven’t you heard NPC passed a resolution requesting UN to investigate possible SL Gov genocide on SL Tamils in the past 60 years.. Do you think US, EU and rest of the world are not heard about these requests? Do you think they believe that you fought with a small group of Tamil terrorist with fighter planes and helicopters with machine guns for 30 years?

Is Mr. Kerry going to meet the famous Sri Lankan American Gota? He might be able to discuss the torture methods used in Sri Lanka compared to the ones used on him in Vietnam.

The usual Malinda gobbledegook in his usual gobbledegook writing style.

Nobody takes him seriously except himself.

He wants to sound intellectual but always ends up as the Clown from the circus.

Malinda, stop writing and head off to Medamulana where there are heaps of vacancies for laundry-men!

    Yes “aia” –
things should be put in correct perspective…..
and that perspective is that there was a privileged and undemocratic position of Tamil Vellahlas in the Ceylon of pre-Independence, which is what brought on the legislative efforts at resetting discrimination against the Sinhala people at post-Independence, and which Tamil leaders exploited to bring about the whole Eelamist political philosophy. The rest is history.

So let BOTH SIDES ACKNOWLEDGE the errors.

I thought the man was writing about Kokis and Kavun, subjects he is no doubt more competent to write about. Since the elimination of the Red Indians and the brutalities against the blacks, the US, as a government, has no record of massive killings of its own people. They may do this overseas but do not kill their own citizens. That is why the situation is different from Sri Lanka where killings of Tamils have gone on, unchecked, for over 60 years.

Anyway, whereas Sri Lanka may have received all types of people, the US seems to continue tl receive marauders, white van abductors, racist fanatics, corrupt bribe takers, war criminals, looters of their own people and what more like Basil and Goatbhaya even now. Maybe,
Malinda should take his lap top and join them so that lackeys could be added to the list of undesirables the US continues to receive.

Poor Malinda. Cannot forgive us for not re-electing his idol Mahinda Rajapakse and making our country respectable again.

Thank you Malinda, for taking this up. You are not whitewashing Mahinda Rajapaksa as some critics say, but talking on behalf of the entire Sri Lanka. As we all know, the State Department doesn’t ‘make mistakes’. They have deliberately distorted obvious facts in par with their agenda. The use of words “30 year war with Tamils” is not a slip.

Is it Mahinda Rajapaksa’s fault that the leader of the most ruthless terrorist organization in the world, namely; LTTE and his cadre, were of Tamil origin? What can Mahinda Rajapaksa do? Can he change people’s origin? At the same time, do they hold exclusive privilege to engage in separatism and terrorism just because they are Tamils? Or stage a war against a democratically elected government just because they are minority Tamils?

Defeating of the scourge of terrorism was the main promise given by Mahinda Rajapaksa in his election manifesto at a time when the people in Sri Lanka were terrorised by the LTTE. People voted for him in 2005 with the hope that he will bring peace to Sri Lanka. He offered olive branch to the LTTE and held many rounds of negotiations as a responsible government, in order to bring terrorists to the democratic world. As the Head of State, Mahinda Rajapaksa had a sovereign right to protect his citizens from the LTTE terrorism, a cataclysm that was overwhelming. Amidst series of failures in negotiations and also with the continuous escalation of brutal killings by the most sophisticated terrorist organization in the world, Mahinda Rajapaksa didn’t have any other alternative other than taking the most rational decision to deliver his election promise. He went to hell and came back with peace. A leader like no other! Today, as a result of Mahinda Rajapaksa’s personal courage and determination, people, irrespective of their race, religion, creed or caste, are enjoying the most precious peace in Sri Lanka.

Where is your sense of justice America? Just because he happens to be a majority Sinhalese, is it a crime for a Head of State to protect his country and bringing in peace to his people by defeating terrorism ? Can a terrorist and his cadre who were responsible for mass killings and destruction gain saintliness and their actions are justified just because they are of minority Tamil origin ? Your sense of justice seems to be obviously misguided.

Malinda, if you do not know why USA was close to us during Rajapakse regime, then you are not fit to be an editor of a news paper. For that matter you are not even fit to wipe your butt with a news paper. Let me educate you, the main reason why USA was not a friend of SL was:
    – SL was not a democratic country under Rajapakse
    – There was no law and order
    – We ran behind China for the bribes we could collect
    – Educated fools like you and G.L Perisi Kuttama and Puss Pundit Dayan were trying to show that USA was not a friend
    – SL did not tolerate opposition under Rajapakse
    – We did not respect USA

    Hope you got educated now.

Malinda Malinda if I were you I would be careful in attacking others as remember old boy that you had t grovel before Devanesan Nesiah former GA and apologize to him

“Malinda apologizes to Nesiah over 2011 article

    http://www.island.lk/index.php?page_cat=article-details&page=article-details&code_title=123660

for those who dont know ,Mr Nesiah sued Malinda and won the case with a Rs 1 million compensation and poor Malinda was begging to reduce the amount as he cant afford to pay that, and Mr Nesiah family took pity on Malinda the Reid avenue fellow and told old Mr Nesiah to forget the compensation and ask for an apology in a fine gesture of magnamity

so Malinda dear boy should be careful on what he writes as ‘once bittne twice shy’
