Sri Lanka Has A 2600 Year-Old Culture?

By Sharmini Serasinghe

If what has become of Sri Lanka today is the legacy of a “2600-year old culture”, might we have been better off without any culture at all?

Ever so often we hear the famous cliché ‘dropped’ by our politicians- “………Sri Lanka’s 2600-year old culture……….” It is a sine qua non statement repeated ad nauseam at many a public and political forum (the most recent being CHOGM) to add ‘weight’ or to perhaps impress otherwise empty utterances. This is obviously done solely to awe the audience, especially a foreign one.

I recall, as an impressionable young girl, when Sri Lanka’s first Executive President J.R. Jayewardene made his State Visit to the USA during Ronald Reagan’s tenure as US President. In his televised address on the South Lawn of the White House, JRJ casting aside his noblesse oblige referred to the United States as “a country with only a 200-year old history, while Sri Lanka’s was over 2500 years old”!

This ‘casual’ or ‘calculated’ remark (with JRJ one never knew) has remained with me to date. To me even then, this ipse dixit remark reeked of an acute inferiority complex and I felt utterly embarrassed on his behalf.

For us Sri Lankans, we have heard this old-hat too often and, therefore it has no effect. But to an outsider hearing these words “Sri Lanka’s 2600-year old culture” and seeing for themselves how this “Buddhist culture” has shaped this country’s fortunes/misfortunes, it must be truly mindboggling!

Within such a context they must also see that the citizenry of this “Buddhist Country” are not all Sinhalese or Buddhists. There are Tamils, Muslims, Burghers, Hindus, Christians, Moslems and others, who also call this country their motherland. They too are a significant part of the rich cultural and historical fabric of this country. But yet, they are regarded and treated as the ‘other’, ‘occupants’ or ‘guests’ of this “Buddhist Country”.

Dubious claims

According to dubious claims by those, perhaps, with an overactive imagination, this is a “Buddhist Country”, because it was chosen by the Buddha himself, over and above all others, to foster and perpetuate his wisdom through the Dhamma. There is no proof of this claim but yet, it is claimed!

To those outsiders who know and understand the Theravada teachings of the Buddha, it must indeed be strange to see how this “Buddhist Country” with a “2600-year old culture” actually practices those teachings. It must appear to them, that there is little understanding of the noble teachings of the Buddha!

They see Buddhist monks or Bhikkus– the living symbols of this so called “culture and history of 2600 years” not quite abiding by the rules of the Vinaya. The caste system, denounced by the Buddha himself, thrives amongst the prominent Buddhist clergy in this “Buddhist Country” through different Nikayas. They travel and live in luxury. They have also crowned themselves as guardians of this unique brand of Buddhism practiced only in Sri Lanka.

At this point, I recall a virtual life-changing incident for me as a child of a single-digit age. My grand-mother in Kandy held an alms-giving on a grand scale at our ancestral home. All the ‘bigwig’ Buddhist prelates from all the Nikayas arrived. Suddenly there irrupted a commotion; the bigwigs from the ‘bigwig’ Nikayas refused to partake of alms together with the prelates of the ‘lower’ Nikayas. The entire household was thrown into a quandary, but peace was restored when ‘special arrangements’ were made to accommodate the ‘lower Nikayas’ separately. This is how I learnt of the repugnant caste system in Sri Lanka- courtesy Buddhist monks!

Also in this “Buddhist Country” which holds such rich claims to the Buddha and his teachings, one would expect to notice tolerance and compassion reign supreme. Alas, one sees the exact opposite.

There can be found, saffron-clad persons masquerading as Buddhist monks, running amok with impunity causing chaos, spewing venom at the ‘other’. Then there are also political leaders of this “Buddhist country” using the human dignity of its citizenry, as door-mats to wipe their feet on.

Perhaps all this would not stand out like a sore thumb, if the trumpets of “Sri Lanka’s 2600-year old culture” were not blown so loud!

Symbols of Culture

Of course if one were to go by some of the fantasy stories contained in the Mahavamsa, and if data relating to archeological findings are accurate, then we have an ancient culture of a great many historical symbols- massive feats of engineering and construction genius, artistically carved stone etc.

But can culture be measured only by these impressive material symbols? Alas in Sri Lanka it is so, and continues to be so. The term “culture” in the broader sense – in relation to the quality of life afforded equally to all the people of this land cannot be found. It may never be found!

Perhaps this wonderful country might have been better off, had it been blessed instead of a “2600-year old culture with “cultured” political leaders, endowed with wisdom and a selfless vision for the greater good of the land, and all its people. For, as things stand and as they are, what use have we for this “2600-year old culture”? What has it given us in tangible terms and in ways that matter to us the most?

Perhaps it is time, for the public faces of our country- our political leaders in particular- to stop trumpeting the highly questionable claim of “Sri Lanka’s 2600-year old culture”. But as things are and the way they stand, this is but a dream!

Alas, ours is today but a land sodden by blood and tears of its people, as hypocrisy reigns supreme!

You ignorance is bliss. Japan is a secular country contrary to your misconception! Open your eyes wide and may be you will see that you are cocooned in the mist of Buddhism; you cannot see wood from trees. All I can do is to pity you! I am an atheist by the way!

What can I say to you the John the Battiest? :) You are one hell of an idiot. Do you like making fool of yourself on public forums?

Japan is secular; it is pure and simple.

                    http://www.indexmundi.com/japan/religions.html:
                    “Religions: Shintoism 83.9%, Buddhism 71.4%, Christianity 2%, other 7.8%
note: total adherents exceeds 100% because many people belong to both Shintoism and Buddhism (2005)”

You see Japanese people preponderantly do not attach themselves with one religion; this is why the percentages do not add up to 100%. Please, please get out of your cocoon and read some books that matter. Japan is successful because she is Secular and accommodative of modern challenges.

                    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion_in_Japan:
“Most Japanese do not exclusively identify themselves as adherents of a single religion; rather, they incorporate elements of various religions in a syncretic fashion[3] known as Shinbutsu shūgō (神仏習合 amalgamation of kami and buddhas?). Shinbutsu Shūgō officially ended with the Shinto and Buddhism Separation Order of 1886, but continues in practice. Shinto and Japanese Buddhism are therefore best understood not as two completely separate and competing faiths, but rather as a single, rather complex religious system.”

If Japan were to follow Sri Lanka’s route, goodness knows what will happen to her!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddhism_by_country#cite_note-168 as of July 2013 Japan’s total population was 127,253,375 (127 Million) & Buddhists were 122,162,952 (122 million) Buddhism & Shintoism both are equally practiced by Japanese … this is understood from your figures as well as total religious adherents exceeds 165 % …. Even if you take your figures for arguments sake the country’s Buddhists % exceeds that of Lanka & how the hell you say the Japanese people from 4th Century BC were not modeled /cultured in a Buddhist back ground ?? What idiotic argument you have ?? Do you know up until 1947 Buddhism & State co-related & only after the WW-2 it changed ?? …burning …OMG..burning..???

John, you win and I will allow you to remain a moron for ever. You try and be a good Buddhist and hope the rest of the Sri Lankans will follow you. The crime rates will be falling like no one’s business! The fact that you truly believe in this and call all other religions rubbish is in itself tells me a lot.

                      John,

Have you heard about good governance and effective policing? It has been strategically proven that crime detection and effective policing in conjunction with good communal and family values bring down the crime rate. Religions can instil moral values but it has no control over how society behaves in terms of crimes in the absence of effective policing. The reason I say you win because you are beyond help! You are not a good Buddhist to start with then what chance you have to promote Buddhism. Only 37% of the Japanese people have confessed to be religious; what does this say to you? Sri Lanka has 60% Buddhists why then the crime rates are high among the Buddhist society?

Japanese who profess a faith are Buddhists + Shintoists (for the most part) . In a 2005 study, only 25% of Japanese professed a faith.

Again you are grappling with % of Buddhists, after you your self submitting 71.4 % , what nonsense is this ? Burning !? definitely something is burning !!!. Even with SL Buddhist % , You are confused with 60% ,it’s 71%…Burning , Why are you writing rubbish in public forums like this ? Burning ?, before you write something pl. read /study well, if not become a laughing stock in the eyes of readers. ..As for me being good or bad Buddhist, who ever said I was ?? You are “Honthoni Baka Yo”. This is a Japanese phrase to describe you. Where do you get these figures like 96% Buddhists in Japan. Go to Japan in Dec, 90% of them Celebrate Christmas..
In General, Japanese people are not religious, deep inside they have Shinto teaching for honourable living for laymen. But, dedicated spiritual Japanese people(monks) who follow Zen Buddhism are masters of it.

John is a classic example of what this article is all about- claims to an ancient Buddhist culture but shows no signs of it.

Denigrating people of other religious faith and ethnic backgrounds is what these Sinhala-Buddhists practice.

Japanese practice Mahayana , a more liberal accommodating form of Buddhism. However most Japanese profess to be a-religious. So I am not sure how you conclude that “more than 96% are Buddhist”

Perhaps that is why thousands of superior Lankans are fleeing to the US and Europe abandoning their motherland while none are coming in the other direction. In 2600 years we have not been a ble to create a legal system where everyone is treated equally before the law. We have not created a level playing field for enterprise where anyone without political influence can enter any sphere of business or enterprise. We havent even managed to create and impartial system for awarding government tenders. There is no separation between politics and the judiciary. There is hardly any social mobility or class mobility to talk of. Social mobility can be only achieved by entering politics or through crime where vast fortunes are created overnight. The education system is in shambles with only a handfull of schools in the Capital city have decent teachers or the necessary fascilities. Indeed, the level of social progress we have made in comparison with the US is truly remarkable and something we all should be proud of!

All those shortcomings you have mentioned as bane to our society were there in the UK, France, Norway and etc as well. It took them centuries to overcome such things. For example, women in France could not vote until 1945, Italy 1946, Belgium 1948. Did rulers in those countries treated their citizens equally before the law even after that? No. In 1960s, I remember ‘No Cats, No Dogs, and No Blacks window adds in many shops in London. It took whites centuries to gain their so-called democracy, religious freedom, rule of law and etc. When European colonials ruled Sri Lanka, did they not deliberately treat different people differently? Of cause they did. Tamils were the favourites of the British Raj. Buddhist Pirivenas were dropped out of state aid program. To put it simply, Colonials had divided people on religion and race. When they left after 500 years, they left a set of truly divided people. If you expect those who were made to think superior to come to terms with sons of soil in just few decades you’re crazy. But we’re on the right track now. Problem is; colonials want to force us to do things in a few years that took them centuries. Are you a back scratcher of the colonials? By the way, those who go to the US, UK etc are economic migrants. I too was one of them.

About 2/3 of Japanese do not profess a faith.– From Wikipedia–
” The 2000 survey by the Yomiuri Shimbun found that 76.6% of Japanese do not believe in a specific religion.[29] The number fell to 72% by 2005, with only 25% believing in religion and 20% practicing faith.[31] According to Steve Heine in 2011, less than 15% of Japanese believe in God.[32] ” — http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion_in_Japan

China does not have any of that crime eg. a well oiled lass can walk the streets alone at 2:00am leaving her car at the hotel/club and none would bother leave alone rape. If tomorrow the American embassy in Colombo announced they would hand out passports to any Sri Lankan who wanted one, how many Lankans do you think will accept it?– More to the point how many miles long will the line stretch from Kollupitiya.

John, Sharmini is not bashing Buddhism. She is bashing the false boasting that we do and the wrong practice of Buddhist teaching. Tell me do you condone the separation of clergy to different Nikayas according to caste? If you do not agree, do you do anything about it for the sake of true Buddhism? Your argument would be valid if she was writing about the USA saying what a wonderful country it is. Let us argue on the content shall we?

You evangelists do not know why and how different sects came about. Do you know that monks from all sects sit together to dana when invited. They sit in a line according to seniority and not on sect basis. Pansil is the same. Bana is the same. Pirith is the same and chanted together. Thanks giving (punyanumodana) is done by one monk at the end of the dana and not on sect basis. Do muslim mullahs and christian padres preach about the way to ‘One God’s’ heaven as the same. Don’t talk BS that you do not know.

            I am no muslim,
I am a practicing Buddhist and you do not have to preach to me. If you are a Buddhist, you will know the truth of the current state of practice. Please do not think worship of concrete statues, trees and dagabos and recitation of pirith or gathas consttitute Buddhism. The language and tone of your comment shows that you are not Buddhist.

            1. Make Statues of Buddha and Pray, and ask for favors. Buddhas specifically did not want that. Praying to star dust? The stature business took off due to Hindu and Greek influences. What happened to the Jains?

2.Make Bodhi Pooja, fill a pot with water and go around a building, and make all kinds of wishes.. fine, and the pot material is again star dust.

The plight of the Sinhala `DALITS`- Karava, Durava, Salagama, Berava and Rodi. Caste discrimination in Sinhala society.
            Friday, 9 September 2011 – 10:42 AM SL Time…………………..
            ………………………………………………………

King Vijayabahu in the 11th century DENIED ACCESS TO THE SO-CALLED LOWER CASTES to venerate the Buddha`s footprint at the summit of Sri Pada or Adam`s Peak. These castes were confined to a lower terrace further down. This led to an immediate counter when a 12th century rock inscription of King Nissanka Malla warned that the Govigama caste could never aspire to high office. …………….
            ……………………………………………………….
The 13th century Sinhala literary work, the Pujavaliya went on to assert that a Buddha would never be born in the Govigama caste The Govigama reaction was swift. Kandyan Buddhist civil law as later documented in the Niti Nighanduwa, placed the Govigama at the top of an elaborately ordered caste hierarchy. …………………..
            ……………………………………………………….
The Kandyan Buddhist clergy – the Siam Nikaya – DENIED ENTRY into the Buddhist monkhood to the non-Govigama. They EXCLUDED THE KARAVE. This led wealthy Karave merchants in the maritime districts to finance the journey of Ambagahapitiya Gnanawimala Thera to Amarapura in Burma for the ordination into the Buddhist monkhood in 1800 AD. While the newly founded Amarapura nikaya had 21 sub-sects defined on caste lines (i.e. Karave, Salagama and Durave), it nonetheless offered a rare opportunity for the Karave to join the Buddhist religious order. ……………………….
            ……………………………………………………..
Other Karave ABANDONED BUDDHISM ALTOGETHER AND CONVERTED TO ROMAN CATHOLICISM to seek caste emancipation. 50% of the Karave caste might well be Christian today. At present, Karave Christian youth have the best education outcomes in Sinhala society. ………..

This chap has not heard of the KARAVA NAVIKA of ANURADHAPURA ABAYAGIRI VIHARAYA, THE ORIGINAL RELIC TEMPLE.

The ‘DALITS’ of SL are the Veddha & royal mixed Rodias, Dobhi and the other farmer caste Padu; they are Buddist like the original Buddists who were Hindu outcastes, still the same with millions of Dalits becoming Buddists. In this Dalit Buddhist culture some dalits claim superiority to others!!

Many kings and chiefs became Christian and thats how the Karava elites and other elites became Christian. As for the normal Karava folk, Jesus picked fishermen to lead his mission, he also fished and was the son of a carpenter. Therefore this is not emancipation but celebration. The coastal folk with their ancient lineage of the region; Shamanism, Balli Thovil, Devil Dancing believed in keeping the demons in good humour, thus a belief was essential for them which is not offered by the new Indian Buddhism.
Leasure fishing is an elite pastime, Lord Mountbatton was killed in his fishing boat. General Kobbekaduwa, Mayor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa, President’s wife and many others were Catholics not for this emancipation. Presidents aunty married a Karava family hailing from King Bhatiyathissa of Kataragama. Vijayabahu’s commander was Kurukulattaryan, the Prince with the Golden anklet. Nissankamalla was more explicit than Vijayabahu, it was affirmation, not counter nor immediate (80 year gap between the kings).

Promoting an exclusive plains theory in an Island country is not sustainable and can be evil.

BAD NEWS QUOTA FOR CMB TELEGRAPH TO PUBLISH..

Sri Lanka is to begin a nationwide survey to determine the number of people who were killed in the country’s 37-year ethnic conflict, the government said. The nationwide survey is a key recommendation of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC).

This Census which has to be completed within six months will be launched on Thursday November 28.

The Task Force which is appointed for the implementation of the LLRC recommendations and headed by the Secretary to the President, Lalith Weeratunga has prepared a National Action Plan which has recommended conducting a professionally designed household survey covering all affected families in all parts of the island to ascertain firsthand the scale and circumstances of death and injury to civilians, as well as damage to property during the period of the conflict.

Accordingly, the island‐wide census will collect detailed information on the deaths, missing persons, injured and/or disabled persons, and damages to the property.

The census, to be conducted jointly by the Ministry of Public Administration and Home Affairs and the Department of Census and Statistics, will cover the conflict period from 1983 up to May 2009.

The census will be conducted at Grama Niladhari Division level and Grama Niladharis will be appointed as enumerators.

According to the Director General of the Department, D.C.A. Gunawardena, the survey would be carried out in 14,022 Grama Niladhari Divisions, island wide, and 16,000 officials would be deployed to collect information.

The information will be collected from family units that have experienced damages to life or property during the past 31 years.

The Director General said officials from the department are currently being trained to identify the family units and collect information from as far back as 1982 to date. The death toll of civilians during the 30-year conflict has not been accurately assessed. A UN panel probed the last phase of the war has estimated that around 40,000 died while other independent reports estimated the number of civilians dead to exceed 100,000.

The government calls on the general public to cooperate in conducting this Census by providing accurate information to the respective Grama Niladhari who will visit their houses in due course.

I would venture to suggest that to the 14000 Grama sevaka Divv.
must be added all the Foreign Embassies & Consular Offices, where
the questionaiire must be on-line for completion, as there are
a million Sinhala/Tamil people who were victims and left the shores
for safety. Only such an action may give a better picture.

        Raja,
Grama Niladharis cannot be trusted to enter correct particulars as they are all appointed and owe ‘allegiance’ to this regime.
Laith Weeratunge too owes his position to this regime.
A proper true survey can be carried out only by lay persons who are members of civic societies with no connection to politicians.
In the northeast, the army is sure to accompany grama niladharis so as to intimidate citizens stating truths unpalatable to the regime.

In Sri Lanka, Every religious follower is racist.

Roman Catholics want every Sri Lankan to be Catholics.

Muslims want every one to be Muslim.

Hindus want every one to be Hindu.

      Buddhists want it too.

Sinhalese Buddhists should love & respect their culture because all others practice something that is totally worst than even BBS like hardliner organisations.

But Buddhists should align their lives with true Buddhism.

All others should apostate and be atheists.

She sent her grandson to school with the idea of providing him with proper education to make him a good person. The Buddhist monk in charge of the temple asked her to send the child to the temple and she sent him there because they were poor. There was no possibility for them to pay the money for tuition fees. That was the reason why they sent the boy to the temple school. When the child began to refuse going to the temple school so adamantly, grandmother had to look for the reason. It was then only that she discovered that the child who was sent to learn good behavior, ethics and Buddha’s Dharma from the monk had in fact been abused by the monk.

Excellent article Sharmini, I believe the change which is required in Sri Lanka should come within the communities, Buddhist as a majority of this country has a major role to play. However if you look at it broadly the masses are living in rural areas they are more worried about their own day to survival. The news media (Print or TV) is dominated by pro government propaganda. unless this trend is changed I don’t think we will have a society which would have a mind set when we prosper as a nation we will all have a better life.

I think the Buddhist clergy has a major role to play in this. Ultimately if they don’t change, not matter what all this fanatic anti minority movements do Buddhism in Sri Lanka will deteriorate.

I am not sure about Hindu religion but I can say Christianity and Islam are going from strength to strength in SL as they are making an concentrated effort.

You hit the nail on the head Sharmini. 2600 year culture stems from the time Buddhism was introduced to our island. But I am quite certain our civilisation was older. It’s time to kick up a revolution. But I don’t agree to politics and religions mixing. They should be kept apart if we are to move forward as a multicultural and multi ethnic nation.

Read the introduction to the 743 page translation named as ‘The Path of Purification’ by Bikku Nanamoli lay name Osbert Moore, a graduate from Exeter College of the 5th century commentry called ‘Visuddhimaga’ by Bhadantacariya Buddhagosha.

In page xxix and xxx of the said introduction, you can read that Ven Buddhagosha had come from India. On coming to Sri Lanka he says he went straight to the royal capital Anuradhapura. In his own words, Buddhagosha has written ‘I learned three ‘Sinhala’ commentries, the Maha Atta [katha], Maha Paccari, Kurundi from ….’ He has mentioned the king who reign while he did all his work. All that writing matches perfectly with Mahawamsa writing that Ven Mahanama wrote 800 years later. Yet you cast doubts and degrade on the heritage of Sinhalas. Your up-bringing and those of you associate has made you a perfect WOG. You should genuflect and pray for Cameron five times a day. You’ll reach bliss.

Exactly Shamini , not just JR , our sports stars use this as a weapon to attack when it suits them , i remember Arjuna R having a public row against Shane Warne in Australia , Arjuna was so cocky at that time and dragged the personnel dispute among them to a cultural dispute between SL & Australia , Arjuna used the occasion to brag about our so called 2600 ( or 2500 ) old civilized Buddhist culture to shield himself against barrage of criticism from Ausi public and went on to remind them where & whom their ancestors were ( British convicts).

A great heritage ruined and squandered.

No one in the future will associate the Sinhalese with the great heritage their ancestors built. They will remember Channel 4 news and the Buffoon show sequel.

I am saddened that the minorities had a role in destroying a worthy culture and heritage – in reaction to the misery meted out to them. Pity, they did not see a role in cherishing it.

Buddhist Bashing must be Ms Serasinghe’s forte.

Abos in Australia lived through the rise and fall of Phoenicians , Pharoahs, Mayans Greeks, Romans and even Tunnel Rat eating Medieval Poms, clocking up 40,000 year uninterrupted existence.

And the 200 year culture came along, killed them raped them gave them Rum and Gonorrhoea and wiped them out.

Pig eaters did the same to the Mayans of the mountains in Peru.

Despite the evil acts of invaders from India and the West, Srilankan inhabitants, thankfully escaped the misfortunes inflicted on the other ancient cultures.

Lord Buddha and the Triple Gem must have certainly kept an eye on them to safeguard their 2600 year record..

Who are Abos??. A name you used for your female siblings? Even changing name of race, tribe or group of people by oneself on his own wish is considered very disrespectful and is not accepted in civilized world. You were explaining about things happened 200 years back, killing Aboriginals by white, but now if somebody use a word like Abos for Aboriginal people, he would loose his job, his whole carrier and publicly disgraced by the majority… This is the civilization Australian prisoners managed to achieve in 200 years? KAS, You raise an interesting point. Why do you say that “….. Srilankan inhabitants, thankfully escaped the misfortunes inflicted on the other ancient cultures.”? We can reasonably deduce that Sri Lanka’s geographical position exposed it to all the influences that you narrate, perhaps even more than others. That may be why our Sri Lankan culture is so vile. By being critical Serasinghe is in fact doing us a service by drawing attention to the need to correct ourselves. Do something about it.

Is Lord Buddha an Indian invader? What is the Triple Gem? Are the Sangha invaders from Burma and Thailand? Is there any evidence that Buddha came to SL? It is just fiction. Sanghamitta’s invasion was from India too. As was Vijaya, the son of Kuveni, buggered no less by a lion. Where did the Wahampura and the Karavas come from? Are they Indian invaders? You must not get too stupid. SL was always an Indian backwater.

    Dear Sharmini Serasinghe –

“If what has become of Sri Lanka today is the legacy of a “2600-year old culture”, might we have been better off without any culture at all?”

We should ask the same question from other countries, that were populated by people from the earliest times, when people migrated from East Africa 70,000 years ago.

Why is the Veddah culture inferior ro the Buddhist Culture? The Hindu Culture? After all Bali Indonesia is 94% Hindu and peaceful, whereas Sri Lanka is 70% Buddhist and very violent.

Africa, Asia, Europe, China, India, North and South America. When do you place the cur off date for the Culture?

Based on the Myths and legends of Mahawamsa, with Vijsya’s grandfather being a Lion (Absurd Child Stories), from 550 BC, to Sinhala Buddhist Culture, 250 BC, the Buddist Monks have exploited the traditions, so that the Monks can maintain their hegemony. The Sinhala Buddhist Laymen is REQUIRED BY CULTURE to PROSTRATE to the MONKS.

Why is the Veddah culture inferior ro the Buddhist Culture? The Hindu Culture? After all Bali Indonesia is 94% Hindu and peaceful, whereas Sri Lanka is 70% Buddhist and very violent?

She sent her grandson to school with the idea of providing him with proper education to make him a good person. The Buddhist monk in charge of the temple asked her to send the child to the temple and she sent him there because they were poor. There was no possibility for them to pay the money for tuition fees. That was the reason why they sent the boy to the temple school. When the child began to refuse going to the temple school so adamantly, grandmother had to look for the reason. It was then only that she discovered that the child who was sent to learn good behavior, ethics and Buddha’s Dharma from the monk had in fact been abused by the monk.

    Hey there Sharmini,

The Italians, the Portugese the Irish consider themselves as straunclhy Catholic countires. Travel to any country in the Middle East you wont find secular laws practised but Sharia.

Caste ridden Tamils aparenenlty think their language is “god”. They gave birth to a cannibalistic Fascism that cosumed itself.

The infallability of man ha? Considering this shit happens elsewhere I doubt the Sinhala people are so bad in relative terms. There are good and bad people in all cultures. You seem to single out Sinhalese as some kind of a special case. Perhaps you haven’t travelled much to expand your horizens. That is something I recommend you do.

Wrt 2500 year history I agree there is too much living on the past going on there.

If you say that you have expanded your horizon, I do not know whether I am coming or going! The Sinhala people messed up the country single handedly from 1948. This is why Shirani has focused on them; is this a rocket science for you to understand? Cast ridden Tamil society; ok I agree; where do the Sinhala defer on this? Can you tell me as to why two Buddhist Hierarchies exist in Sri Lanka? How did the JVP come about? You talk too much but no substance!

        Burning Issue,

India was divied along linguistic lines purely becuase of Tamils. Ceylon congress, the first post colonial political formation was split yet again becuase Tamil playing biggotry. Then read chapeter 7 Soulbury commision “discrimination”. Its full of Tamil narrow mindness.

British kept piling up assorted south Indians in line-rooms in squalid conditions. No consideration was given their health, education and general well being of others. Tamil leaders raise communalsm again over this for the first time post independence.

Then barely after 2 years after Tamil leader wants to hog 40% of the realestate exclusively for Tamils for no apparent reaons other than biggotry yet again! He becomes an irritant. In 1958 he goes beserk tarring Sinhala names after caste discrimination was outlawed.

Then again in 1977 Tamil leader declare war on Ceylon. Apparenly a mandate given Tamils when it wasn;t. Then in 1980 Tamil leaders crawl all over Indira try to split the country. The Tamil biggots desroy the country for 30 years after this.

Usually in most other cases I do blame the majority. In case of Ceylon however, Tamil biggots from neighbouring TN also bear down being a burdon. So all in all, I’d say you are way off the mark with your assertion.

You are just sick; there is no other way to explain your condition! There was no country called India before the British amalgamated the various kingdoms into one! There were empires and small kingdoms were paying tributes etc. If you say that the Tamils were responsible for Indian states, you are one hell of a fool. Your bigotry has no limits. You are just seeking out anything and everything to justify your bigotry! You have no time to analyse and comprehend materials; just come out with it; what a moron you are indeed.

How did Sri Lanka got to this mess without the Sinhala playing communal politics? Did the Tamil have power? No! Who then messed everything up? Please grow up for goodness sake.

The people who claim that Sri Lanka only belongs to Sinhales as the custodians of Buddhism need to be reminded of some arithmetic. If every Sinhalese is to claim the sanctity of Sinhala Buddhist ownership of Sri Lanka then one has to only go back to say 20 generations of ancestry to find that each of them to be Sinhala Bhuddhist there would have been 2 to the power 20, Sinhala Buddhist ancestors 20 generations back. Two to the power twenty means 2 multiplied by 2 for twenty times, i.e. 2x2x2x2x2…..so on twenty times. The result of this is one million forteight thousand five hundred and seventy six purely Sinhala Buddhist ancestors for just one Sinhala Buddhist who claims the Sinhala Buddhist sanctity of his or her genealogy. If we are to consider existing say 10 million or so people who claim Sinhala Buddhist sanctity of their genealogy Sri Lanka would have had 10 million times million Sinhala Buddhists 20 generations ago. This cannot be right and the reason is none can claim any ethno religioys sanctity unless their myopia is only restricted to a few generations back.

In Balangoda caves Prof. Deraniyagala and a team of archealogists found skeletons dating back to 30,000 years. Were they Buddhists or Sinhalese, ?. Neither the religion nor the language existed then. Some experts believe these skeletons belong to ’emigrants’ from Mesaptamia, the area known as the cradle of civilisation, corresponding to present day Iraq. Does this mean Iraquis are the real owners of this island?

This absirdity, stupidity and cancerous myopia need to be stopped!

As one of the most literate countries in the world our younger generation should be taught historical scientific facts, perhaps with arihmetical means. Then the politucians with hidden ethno religious agenda will not be able to brain wash generations with myopia in order to remain in power passing the reign from father to son, justifying in the process their brth right to reign, and compel others to be subservient to their ‘vision’ that can only be implemented through nepotism, corruption, lawlessness, thuggery, intimidation and deceit. Ethno-religious sentiments will remain an effective tool in the hands of the corrupt rulers as long as they can keep the people blind, deaf and stupefied.

      Dear Ms Pearl Thevanayagam,

I have read an article of yours commending Mr Sebastian Rasalingam. I admire your courage and truthfulness in doing so.

Sharmini’s article is very well written but it has major flaws in her argument. These flaws negate somethings that she has written. My reply to her below discusses them. I hope you will critique what I have written.

I was referred to this article by a contributor to GroundViews, who tried to use the cast amongst Nikayas (I deplore it completely)which Sharmini has very correctly highlighted to justify the Tamil Hindu caste system.

    Goofy,

Fathima Fukushima is not a racist. She does not know the meaning of the word. She is a Sinhala Nationalist – the type that MR is banking on. The type that will light its monkey tail and run around cursing others – for its self inflicted misery.

When the heat is too much it will embrace K.A Sumanasekera – who states without shame that the “Lord Buddha and the Triple Gem must have certainly kept an eye on them to safeguard their 2600 year record.. “

You have no more records to safeguard – all gone. You have ruined the good name of the Buddha. You have practice hate and excel in cruelty – to others, in the hope of protecting your heritage.

You are in the pits, crawl out of it if you can. Tamils are no better, their hate towards the rabid Sinhales Buddhists made them commit far worse crimes. So give each other a warm embrace and stay in that pit – till some with man’s commission exhumes your bones out of curiosity on disappeared cultures.

A very sensible write-up by Sharmini. What’s the point in boasting about a 2600 year old culture, if it has not had any wholesome effect on what is happening in the present. This much hackneyed phrase is being used as a smokescreen by our political leaders to cover up their misdeeds. It is a well-meaning article, not written with any contempt. Values, whether Buddhist or otherwise, can be imparted and flourish only by practice and not just by precept or imposition. Kudos to you, Ma’am!

I have known this writer Sharmini since she was a child. I often wondered why she had no regard for most Buddhist monks in Sri Lanka.

In fact she has made it known to her family that when she passes on, all alms-givings in her memory should not be given to Buddhist monks, but to homeless street dogs.

Now I understand her bitterness “This is how I learnt of the repugnant caste system in Sri Lanka- courtesy Buddhist monks!”

The incident at the family alms-giving must have scarred her as a child or else how could she remember this ugly incident after all these years?

    • 1

        You have misunderstood my comment.

The point I was trying to make was that the unfortunate incident she witnessed when she was a little child has scarred her-

“the bigwigs from the ‘bigwig’ Nikayas refused to partake of alms together with the prelates of the ‘lower’ Nikayas.”

For a child, all people are the same until they are told the difference by ‘grown-ups’. In this case she learnt it from Buddhist monks!
