Sri Lanka Wins? Not Yet, Mr. President!

By R. Hariharan

Col. (retd) R.Hariharan

The month of June was a busy one for President Ranil Wickremesinghe. He announced his candidacy for the presidential election, cashing on his success with the restructuring of debtors achieved in the Paris Club meeting that satisfies the International Monetary Fund (IMF) debt relief package.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe announced his carefully orchestrated entry into the presidential fray with a TV address. He said, “Today makes a significant milestone in the recent history of our country….Our country is now reaping the positive results of our persistent endeavours over the past years. This morning in Paris, Sri Lanka reached a final agreement with our official bilateral creditors. Similarly, we signed another agreement with China’s Exim Bank today in Beijing.” He was announcing the successful clinching of a deal with key bilateral lenders including China and India covering up to $10 billion in debt. This was a critical step towards recovery after Sri Lanka’s 2022 financial crash.

“Sri Lanka won” Wickremesinghe said after saying, “Sri Lanka concluded negotiations with the Official Creditor Committee (OCC) and the Exim Bank of China.” The President was referring to the agreement Sri Lanka had signed in Paris on June 26 with the OCC co-chaired by Japan, India and France that have lent a combined $5.8 billion. A separate agreement was signed with China’s EXIM Bank in Beijing to rework $4.2 billion to ensure compatibility between debtors. Th IMF had laid restructuring of bilateral debt agreements as one of the key conditions for its US$ $2.9 billion bailout program to improve Government finances. Sri Lanka’s total external debt is US$ 37 billion.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said on June 27 that Sri Lanka’s agreements with China and other creditor nations to restructure about US$ 10 billion in bilateral debt took the island nation a step closer towards restoring debt sustainability. Welcoming the news, IMF’s Senior Mission Chief for Sri Lanka Peter Breuer said “We hope that there will be swift progress on reaching agreements with external private creditors in the near future.”

The parliament is set to meet on July 2 and 3 to debate the implementation of foreign debt restructuring agreements and vote on proposals contained in the Resolution for the Implementation of External Debt Restructuring Agreements bill. Opposition parties and section of the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) are getting ready to question some of the tough measures taken by the President to conform to IMF conditions. He has doubled taxes, removed energy subsidies and is set to sell off loss-making state enterprises to shore up state revenue under that deal.

The President in his speech focused on the positive aspects of his approach. He said the debt restructuring is a condition of the IMF bailout. “Sri Lanka has sought IMF assistance on 16 previous occasions, each ending in failure. Why? We consistently failed to meet the conditions set, neglected our commitments, and lacked financial discipline.”

Wickremesinghe reminded that this was the first instance in Sri Lanka’s history where an IMF program has been successfully implemented. At the same time, he hoped the IMF bailout of $2.9 billion he secured last year would be the country’s last. He emphasized “unlike the earlier16 instances, we approached the IMF…. as a country facing bankruptcy. Given this context, I pose a crucial question: Will you move forward with me, who comprehended the problem from its inception, offered practical solutions, and delivered results?” In a snide reference to his detractors, he asked “Or will you align with those grappling in the dark, still struggling to grasp the issues? Will you stay the course towards a brighter future for yourself and the nation? Or will you opt for a different path?” Cautioning the people against the perils of veering off course or choosing the wrong path, Wickremesinghe appealed to the people to make the right decision.

Striking an emotional tone, he highlighted his achievement. He said, “The future does not merely belong to Ranil Wickremesinghe; it pertains to the country, to your future, and the future of our children. In just two years, without a parliamentary majority, without my appointed Government officials or ministers, I successfully elevated our country from bankruptcy and economic turmoil to a position that astonished the world.” Even as he spoke, his supporters in Colombo celebrated by setting off firecrackers.

On June 30, Wickremesinghe held his first Ekva Jayagamu (Victory through unity) rally at Mattara. The core theme of his speech was the need for the unity of a coalition committed to the nation’s interest, regardless of political affiliation for the collective effort for the country’s success. The President also went on to explain some of the welfare measures to help marginalised people like the ‘Awesuma’ programme for free distribution of rice and ‘Urumaya’ programme for giving deeds for freehold lands.

He extended an invitation to the opposition, urging them to prioritise national interest over partisan politics. Present on the stage were some MPs who belonged to SLPP and SLFP-New Alliance. Practitioners of political shenanigans were equally busy as debate over the presidential poll hotted up.

Illegal fishing in Sri Lanka waters

India’s woes on fishermen from Tamil Nadu poaching in Sri Lanka waters went a notch up with the tragic loss of life of a Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) senior sailor due to critical injuries suffered on night June 25. The incident occurred when the SLN craft patrolling off Kankesanthurai chased an Indian trawler poaching in Sri Lankan waters. It is a timely reminder to both countries to resolve the long pending dispute over traditional fishing areas against maritime boundaries. The issue has been aggravated by use of illegal trawl nets by fishermen banned by Sri Lanka.

According to The Morning, in March, President Wickremesinghe instructed authorities to urgently find a definitive solution to the recurring issue of Indian fishermen encroaching into Sri Lankan waters. In order to find a permanent solution to this issue, President Wickremesinghe sent a delegation under his Chief of Staff Sagala Ratnayaka to New Delhi despite in March to discuss this issue with his counterparts. However, so far, the poaching issue continues to remain elusive.

With Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi back in power for the third time, anti-Indian elements in Sri Lanka are back in play. Sri Lanka government’s discussion with India on increasing energy and land communication linkages are already on the card of anti-India lobby. They are likely to increase their decibel levels when presidential electioneering gets under way. Indian fisherman poaching in Sri Lanka waters is already a major issue in Northern province. This is likely to provide additional fodder to flog India during the run up to the presidential election.

Obituary R Sampanthan

It is a sad moment for Sri Lankan politics. One of the veteran Tamil leaders Rajavarotham Sampanthan, who fought for a just solution for the equitable treatment of Tamils all his life, passed away in Colombo late on Sunday (June 30). A veteran Tamil politician and long time leader of the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi (ITAK), his political career spanned six decades. His first stint in the Sri Lankan parliament starting in 1977. Sampanthan was the incumbent MP for Trincomalee District and has served in five parliaments since 1977. His speeches in parliament were known for his incisive analyses and eloquence.

    Dear Hariharan
The above article sounds factual and reflects the state of affairs in Sri Lanka
Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe’s current stand seems acceptable to some section of the populus but fails to impress the wider society in my view
Time will tell us due course as to how it would pan out at the polls; if and when it transpires
In the meantime, sadly, sufferings go on regardless

“Sri Lanka Wins? Not Yet” – Col. R. Hariharan, until we eliminate the Rogues, Grafters, Killers, and Crooks.

We are on our way forward in the efforts of “Elimination”.

The first step is to find a Trustworthy, Reliable, Unblemished Charactered LEADER to lead a TEAM with a WORKABLE plan, DISCIPLINED on a system of values and reformed political culture. Next and most importantly to ELIMINATE the categories of Rogues, I mentioned above from entering the Legislature.

The BEGINNING would be with the oncoming Presidential Election. That will be the springboard for the rest of the journey. All indications are that the present ROUGES inclusive of the present President, who have brought our country to disaster during the last few decades, will be sent home …..home? That is our WINNING GOAL and Sri Lank will WIN.

      Douglas ,

UK PM accepts responsibility for the historic election loss of the
party and decides to STEP DOWN from party leadership . Is it
worth to call RW Mr President ? And we just can not only blame
him for this because this is a CULTURE and everybody is into it .
In day today life , almost every citizen tries to avoid responsibility
for his / her actions , trying to blame the other . And this culture
has made it easy for Bankrupt Leaders like RW and MARA to escape
forever from their responsibilities . UK PM said sorry to the people
for not delivering up to their expectation and for letting down the
hard work of his followers . How arrogant our third rate leaders ?
Country’s highest court decides that Rajapakshas are responsible for
collapse of our economy . Has anyone of them said sorry for it ? And
instead they are getting ready to face the people in the next election .
Just look how they look at the people ?

whywhy: You are correct. This culture of “IMPUNITY” must be changed. When the SC found Rajapakses and others (two ex-Governors of the CB, Treasury Secretary, and members of the Monetary Board of CB) guilty of “Mismanagement”; “Wrong Decisions” etc. I expected a motion to be brought before the Legislature to punish all of them by withdrawing their Civic Rights and further prosecuting them on criminal charges.

Nothing happened. Not even the Opposition thought it fit to do that. I am unable to comprehend why even the NPP kept silent on the matter. Any “DEAL”? That’s why we need PEOPLES’ FRONT to demand action from their representatives.

          Douglas,

The same thing happened with CBK, if you remember Water’s Edge. If you punish MaRa, you are opening a “can of worms” that will probably include Ranil (Bond Scam) as well.

            1) Did they really start the “bond scam” by the RW-MS government or was it an extension of the same scam introduced by MARA-AJITH CABRAL since 2008?- folks, over to you, time to think….. thanks.

In fact in 2008 everything was generated by the “MADAMULANA” mafia Sacquili boss with his “real vandibattaya” Cabral. This is a high level money laundering operation carried out by many others.

Lester: You know what the Political Authority did in the case of one of the convicts. He was debarred from holding any position in Public Service but defying the orders of the court he was appointed as the Secretary to the President. That very same man has been found guilty of Mismanagement of Public Affairs that brought the country to bankruptcy.

              Douglas;

I see your point. However, you must be aware that there is a whole class of people dedicated to the permanent division of the country. Groups like GTF are paying large sums of money to various political interests in the UK and elsewhere. At this juncture, the stability of the government is more important than investigating corruption. Assuming the government collapsed, it could pave the way for international intervention/occupation, and there is no going back from that.

Hon Sambanthan was a respectable SL politician who wanted a JUST settlement for the Tamil Speaking Lankans. In this aspect no one will think that he succeeded. Tamils still live in fear throughout the Isle.
The North and East of the country has too many defence officials keeping a close tab on the minorities.
The 13 th Amendment has not been fully implemented. Ideally the North and EastProvincial Councils needs to be combined with the Chief Minister having both Land & Police powers. The post of Governors for the PCs should be abolished.

Perhaps the author, Mr. What’s his name does not know (either because he is retired or because he is not in the correct pay grade) that Ranil Wickremasinghe and his Chief F-boy along with a bunch of others have made a pact with the Indian Intelligence to crash the premier bank of Sri Lanka, Bank of Ceylon, in return for 14% of the USD 4 billion emergency fund facility that India had extended to the Government of Sri Lanka. Ues Ranil & his criminal gang are winners not the Sri Lankan people. Ranil is part of the cancer the country has been plagued with since independence or even prior to that.

@Chiv – I didn’t understand what that really means for Sri Lanka and its people. Did you mean to say that the UK is able to exert pressure to improve the human rights situation? Remember, despite being a small nation, we are a republic and not under the monarchy like Canada, Australia, and others. Our economy is also not dependent on the UK. The UK has already exited the EU, so even our garment exports don’t rely on the UK. You need to break free from your colonial mindset to realize the current day reality. If you were to mention China or India, it would make sense due to geographical proximity and loan dependencies, respectively

        Hello Dayan,
“and not under the monarchy like Canada, Australia, and others”. No they are not under the Monarchy. They are members of the Commonwealth. This link may explain the relationships https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Member_states_of_the_Commonwealth_of_Nations

            Hello SJ,
The role of the Monarchy in Commonwealth countries is very vague, However if you take Canada as an example, it is a Constitutional Monarchy with King Charles as its (Titular) head. “Presently, the Crown has a minor role in Canada’s government and is purely symbolic. The King’s representative in Canada, the Governor General, attends several ceremonial functions, and represents Canada in state visits and other international events. They are also responsible for formally dissolving parliament when there is an election.
The main difference between Canada and the UK is that in the UK the Monarchy still has the Royal Prerogative “The royal prerogative includes the powers to appoint and dismiss ministers, regulate the civil service, issue passports, declare war, make peace, direct the actions of the military, and negotiate and ratify treaties, alliances, and international agreements”.
There are still monthly meetings of the Privy Council where Charles receives Ambassadors etc. but under “advice” from the Government.
Even to the British Public the role of the Monarchy is not clear.
            Best regards

              LS
The role of the monarchy is of nominal value almost everywhere.
But reluctance of White states to cut off fully from the British monarchy is not insignificant.
Even Afro-Caribbean Barbados did it only two (?) years ago.

LankaScot: Thanks for the link. I think there is a difference between Commonwealth Nations and Commonwealth Realms.

Commonwealth Realms are 15 in number and Commonwealth Nations are 56. Those 15 countries still uphold the Monarchy as the Head of their States and are represented by a Governor.

Dayan, I’m not expecting anything from U.K and least from China or India. Personally it’s refreshing to see a human rights activist becoming a country leader. U.K may not be able to exert pressure or bring sanctions or economic blockade. But they still can influence like minded countries who are members of U.N. Within country they also can bring travel ban or take legal actions against war criminals, if and when situation arise. Anything positive coming out of U.K, doesn’t need to be considered colonial mindset. ( stereotype view ). For all I know , all major political parties including Labor pledged to work towards justice and accountability for mass atrocities committed in Lanka. Record number of Tamils representing all parties, are running in this election. Recently few Lankans residing in U.K were arrested for their involvement in war crimes. U.S , Canada and few other European countries took similar actions. Why do you think racist SW is turning rabid about this ???

“Former” is the key word, Chiv.
But whether his earlier professional concern for Human Rights will extend to the unfortunate, criminally-treated Palestinians, leaves much to be hoped-for.
And no doubt Israel will welcome the new Brit PM – & his Jewish (Zionist?) wife. Do you think he’ll also call himself a Zionist, as Biden does?

Readers, Anyone with some human dignity knows that the Palestinian issue is against humanity. The same is true of Ukrainians. With the UK economy sinking, they will have to focus on their domestic issues rather than meddling in world affairs.

Newly elected Prime Minister Starmer makes it very clear: “Change starts now.” He himself is said to be from a poor family background. Conflicts between the working class and conservatives have been going on for a long time. consequently, today people have to face difficulties with their unemployment rate rising rapidly. London may be somewhat good, but other province in UK are struggling with their numerous problems in the post COVID-pandemic period.

@Mallaiyuran – I beg to distance myself from Lester just to credit his own work whether its acceptable to you or not. You need to read a lot of law books and collect lot of evidence based study to determine what really happent during the height of war at the last minute. For me, there is high chance serious war crimes been committed by the grouund offensive units but defnitely not a genocide. War crimes and genocide the most obvious being that while war crimes, of their nature, may only be committed in times of war, genocide may be committed during war or peace. If it is a Genocide, I would still be expect the same to continue now in small or large scale. But, it is not in reality. Also, Intellectuals can think for themselves and for others regardless of thier reglious or language affiliations. You never look things with open mind as such for you every fellow sinhala brother and sister may be look like an enenemy to you. But, that is your own assertion. We just can tell where you go wrong not what you can do to correct it.

JVP was a terrorist organization, 30 years ago. Today, 22 million (Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims and other racial divisions) people look at them to provide relief for them from the UNP-SLFP’s 75 years of tyranny. Couldn’t-shouldn’t the story of the new British Prime minister become anything parallel to this? Britain is the group leader of the core countries team appointed by the UNHRC to deal with the Wildlife Sanctuary, SinhaLE, Lankawe’s human rights violation issues. Remember, there is nothing has come out of it so far or nothing expected to happen today or even tomorrow, but there is group of nations is assigned to deal with the responsibility of Langkang’s various political crimes, which are stem-ed from Mullivaikkal Tamil Genocide to Gothapayal’s Economic crime of Poop Importing from China. Irrelevant of what Britain can do to Tamils or what PM Sir Stamer’s inclination towards human rights violation as an outstanding issue of contemporary global problems (he talked about it in the election campaign and in the speeches after the victory about his interest in getting involved in that issue), within the Western Nations who insist on human rights and democratic political system, in and outside of UN, act as the group of first nations, act unitedly.

That means the victims need a hand in that group who hold the ladle for their hunger and thirst for justice. It was pointed out many times to Britain because they, as willingly or unwillingly, had their hand dipped in the soup of the history of modern shape of Ceylon, they have obligation to play a role on the international arena in fixing the current problems, which have their origin in Soulbury Constitution & Lord Donomore’s Universal Franchise. Still, because the world’s political Sadampi, America, heeds the talk of Britain. Already American media is describing that the labor party government will be a helping hand for President Biden to deal with nightmares in and out of the US. Thus, there exists a world of explanations and excuses for Tamils to stretch their hand to Stamer to beg for their justice, not at Evil Emperor, Gothapayal, or the Rowdy Old King, who are the tyrants genocide Tamils!

What it seems too urgent for Langkang is, beyond NPP/JVP cleaning the Poops the UNP SLFP Union imported and stored in Diyawanna Lake Palace compound claiming as their original, fixing the silly mentality of the Sinhala Buddhist Intellectuals who cook within their kitchen and claiming that they have proudly imported from Moon (i.e., a systemic change to reorganize the political sky of the Island). Idiots are still not starting to think that they are only wear and throw Amudies of the War Mongering super powers’ (America, China, India & Russia) in the South Asia corner, who are, day and night drawing maps and plans for where to drop the next generation atomic bomb and who be the first. Aney Pavum, the poor Sinhala Buddhist Intellectuals are challenging the international powers relentlessly, like the snake in the leg of the eagle, while being carried over the high mountains, peck on the leg of the eagle hoping to have it released by the eagle on the mountains’ rocks… after all anything is only an end of its death.

This shallow attitude of the Sinhala Buddhists grew to this stage, sewage watered and poop fertilized, by bogus political pundits, for now for ¾ century, claiming that “they did it only because America also did it”. Time for these Wildlife Kingdom’s Donkeys to start thinking on their own, instead of crying after the cocoons’ worms, the Bald Head Kandy Ayatollahs as “Buddham Sharanam Gachchami”… for and beyond 2500 pathetic years.

      Hello Chiv,
It took Keir Starmer more than 6 months to call for a Ceasefire in Gaza and even then it was a mealy-mouthed call. I knew that Labour would win and that Farage would likely get elected. But this is due to the Tories failures not Starmer’s personality or politics. There are many people that would like to re-join the EU, but I doubt that this will happen. Starmer will align himself with the US and unless they (the US) change their stance on Sri Lanka, I doubt if Starmer will do anything concrete. Same thing applies to the Palestinians. However there are many in the Labour Party that are deeply distressed by the Genocide in Gaza and the illegal take-over of the West Bank and may force Starmer to change his stance. As they say “Watch this space” for developments in the UK.
      Best regards

You must have got the news of Labour’s landslide win by now & I am bracing up for tax rises. It’s OK for the poor & the super rich may lose a little relatively, which would hardly effect their lifestyle but it is those in the middle, as usual, who would be badly off.

Last time, it was the Toris under Boris J who won with a big majority, riding on the wave of ‘getting Brexit done’. It did not happen the way Brexiteers wanted & Boris was becoming the joker in International politics but though he always managed to talk his way out from any faux par on his part he was proved to have lied to the Parliament & had step down. His successor, Liz Truss, was very much our GR & was thrown out kicking & screaming only after 44 days as PM & now she has lost her seat as well. It is the same for many Boris loyalists but for the Tory toffs, ‘affable’ Boris is still the poster boy. Sunak stabilized the economy after the disastrous ‘Trussonomics’ but a self made millionaire of Indian heritage & a practicing Hindu is not the ideal PM for many Tories & Sunak became the fall guy for the mistakes of the past. Labour’s mantra was ‘change’, just as ours, so, there may be similarities with UK politics.

I am not saying RW is Sunak but RW did stabilise the economy after ‘GReconomics’ & not being elected by the public, RW had to depend on the Rajapakse support & even if he wanted to emulate ‘appa’ Sira by ditching the Rajapakses, he didn’t have the clout in Parliament to do so. Anyway, RW is laissez fair in his approach but worse is his loyalty to his cronies & protecting corrupt politicians, whatever the colour, & that makes him unsuitable for the high office.

Unlike AKD & SP, Starmer has an impressive track record as a public servant & Labour has a detailed manifesto open for public scrutiny, therefore, we know what to expect but the SL favorites, NPP, have yet to do so. In UK, politicians who don’t deliver are thrown out with no possibility of a second chance while our politicians rob the country openly, yet, are not held responsible. I would say we have a lot to learn from UK

            Raj,
You, Lankascott and I myself see things with a different angle. We live between two continents and varied cultures. We couldn’t believe our eyes but it was true, the Rajapaksa brothers robbed the last coin of the nation by July 2022.

RW stabilised the economy for the second time since 2000, but he doesn’t get credit for it. These people are real hypocrites with Sinhala Buddhist banners on their foreheads.

By the time RW took the risk of becoming caretaker president (July 2022), the srilanken govt had not even paid for the freight.

Foreign reseves were lowered to 30 millions of US dollars. High taxes, Tourism booming and the IMF funds cause it to rise upto 5 billions as of today. Now srilankens can afford to pay off their ship loads for essential IMPORTs. No people fall dead on queses. Investors are considering the country as a rising nation out the crisis.
Unfortunately, srilankens are misled 24/7 by JVP cirminals by feeding them with BLATANT lies, this is really a curse !.
            .
By July 22, 2022, Ships were delayed near the port of Colombo and people were agitated. Some died being caught by permanent anxities.

There were no daily essentials like medicine, food and fuel. Had Gotabaya continued, whole lot of people woudl have fallen dead…. remember ?

There was not even cooking gas. Serpentine queues made srilankens unique on the TV screens. Some european TOURISTs and friends were worrying and questioned me what happened to my motherland.

              Dear LM
What can be said about RW is nothing but the truth. He has utilized every available resource, including his diplomatic relations worldwide, to guide Sri Lanka from a dire economic crisis back to stability. Yet, some choose to turn a blind eye to these undeniable facts for their own misguided reasons.
              .
Nevertheless, Sri Lanka has transcended its past of irrational emotionalism to become a significantly improved nation. Many have learned to discern the negative propaganda spread by “crybabies and hypocritical opportunists,” separating truth from falsehood.
              .
The majority are grateful for RW’s efforts and believe he deserves more time to continue steering the country forward. It’s noteworthy that when faced with adversity, two political parties were offered power but declined, only to shamelessly vie for the same power now that the situation has improved—an ironic and disappointing reality that people are increasingly aware of.
              .
Thank you LM, Raj UK, Old Codger, LS, Manel, Dayan, Whywhy and the rest for adopting a rational/ Objective view on the truth.

                .
AKD led NPPrs would be favourable and practical, if many others would stay behind them for their core cause which is standing against ” corruption and abusive political culture”. But people are interwined other parties and RAJAPAKSISM above all.

The Buddha identified ignorance as the fundamental cause of our suffering. Ignorance refers to misunderstanding or misconceiving both reality and our own selves.
If ignorance prevents us from comprehending ourselves accurately and keeps us trapped in the cycle of samsara indefinitely, can the average person truly grasp the complexities of our nation’s current state?

The truth is that while many of us identify as Buddhists and regularly listen to the dharma, how many truly internalize its teachings, adjusting our behaviors and attitudes to become better practitioners of Buddhism?
Similarly, you can lecture a JVP supporter endlessly, but it often goes in one ear and out the other without sinking in. They only seem to pay attention when they hear that successful people will be brought down and treated harshly.
Conversely, when a JVP supporter achieves success through various means, they quickly distance themselves from the less fortunate and build their own castles.

                Hello Human Touch,
When I travel from here near Kandy (Nuwara) to Nuwara Eliya I see a very different part of Sri Lanka. Not just the weather and the different produce. It is like traveling from Aberdeen to the Cairngorms, it is like going back in time. My point is that Sri Lanka is not a homogeneous whole.
Here in the Central Province near Gampola we cannot see much improvement in peoples living standards. Businesses are slowly withering, even the range of food that people buy has altered radically. The minor roads are crumbling due to lack of maintenance and the power cuts due to faults have increased.
There may be a different view from Colombo (just like London compared with the Provinces),
My question is – are all parts of Sri Lanka equally affected by the Economic Problems or is there a disproportionate help for some areas?
                Best regards

            Douglas,
You should read more on what normally happens in bankrupt countries:
” (in Lebanon) The currency has been devalued by 90% – still not enough to reflect its slide in full. Inflation is in triple digits.[vague] Public services have collapsed; without hiring a private generator, households can expect only an hour or so of power a day. Shortages of drinking water have contributed to disease outbreaks, including the first cholera cases for decades. Parents are sending their children to orphanages because they cannot feed them”
Our currency depreciated 50%. Lebanon is still in the same state.
You should be blaming the 6.9 m voters who voted for that idiot Gota.

@LM – The economy’s fluctuations, often seeming to improve or worsen, are largely influenced by foreign policy, despite it being hard to believe. This practice is common among European nations and the US. Zimbabwe’s past efforts to reclaim land from English settlers is a notable example.

RW, though not an expert, is favored by Western supporters. As a result, loans are frequently approved, whereas grants are not. This approach provides only short-term economic recovery, without establishing meaningful income-generating opportunities for the country.

Our future generations will eventually bear the burden and struggle with the consequences of these decisions.

              Human Touch:

Rajapakse did not take the country to bankruptcy. COVID-19 and the high borrowing cost associated with war took the country to bankruptcy. You can draw the same conclusion if you check various data, e.g. GDP, forex reserves, revenue from tourism and foreign remittances from the period beginning in 2005 and lasting till 2021. I am not saying Rajapakse associates are innocent. I have read the Panama Papers, which gives details about Rajapakse money laundering. I know about Basil’s land deals, and Yoshitha going to prison for financial crimes. But I do not agree with the judgement of the Supreme Court regarding bankruptcy. The primary cause for bankruptcy is the financing of terrorism by the Tamil Diaspora and the secondary cause is the Chinese Coronavirus. Therefore, both the Diaspora and China should pay restitution to Sri Lankans for their hardship. Additionally, India should cede Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka, as India directly interfered in SL affairs during the 80’s and 90’s.

                The war ended in 2009.
We were not the only country that had Covid. India did too, and had sustained lockdowns. But India was not governed by an idiot who destroyed its agriculture on the advice of monks and paediatricians. Tea exports and rice production collapsed. The presence of WD Lakshman and Cabral experimenting at the Central Bank didn’t help.

                Hello Lester.
The Virus probably (some US Departments are pretty sure) leaked from the Lab in Wuhan, however the trail of money for the development of such a virus particularly susceptible to Humans goes straight back to EcoHealth Alliance in the USA. They had a proposal using “Gain of Function” and the insertion of the Furin Cleavage Site that Wuhan used to do the preliminary steps that led to some Lab Workers being infected. The rest is History, however we are missing the Data Records that were removed. When and if they are found the proof will be pretty unshakeable. Now ask your friend Donald for Compensation. It happened on his watch. But there is a caveat – Sri Lanka let the Woman from Wuhan (probable first carrier) into the Country without testing her.

                Lester,
COVID-19 didn’t just impact Sri Lanka; it affected the entire world. While some countries managed it effectively, we seemed to fare poorly. Whose fault is that?
Regarding your statement about war borrowing causing bankruptcy, let me remind you: a significant portion of the borrowing occurred after the war had already ended.
It’s true that we took on high-interest loans from China, which is the only point you’ve accurately mentioned. Moreover, many of the contracts were inflated under the Rajapaksa administration.

“a significant portion of the borrowing occurred after the war had already ended.”

How do you grow an economy without borrowing? Welcome to the real world.

Bankruptcy has nothing to do with the amount borrowed. If that was the case, the US (now at $34 trillion USD in debt) would have withered defaulted a long time ago. Bankruptcy really means the borrower cannot meet debt obligations over any longer-term time horizon and needs legal protection to do some kind of restructuring. You want to talk about debt, here you go.

Mahinda took on more debt than Maitree, but when you annualize it, the difference is negligible.

                  Debt Growth Rate:

Rajapaksa: ≈3.67 billion USD per year for 9 yrs
Sirisena: ≈3.27 billion USD per year for 4 years

If not for the Easter Attacks, Sirisena/Ranil would have hit MaRa’s amount of borrowing or gotten close.

The basic reason for bankruptcy was the inability to re-finance short-term debt obligations. Without COVID-19, Sri Lanka probably could have found a lender.

Why don’t you try to argue with real numbers next time, rather than your imagination.

                    Sri Lanka went bankrupt.

              Dear HT,
Our people are falling prey to the “lies” propagated by the Sri Lankan media. Social media platforms are like “providing modern weapons to the wrong soldiers”. Ignorant people are the majority and they do not allow themselves to differentiate between truth and falsehood.
              .
Many Sri Lankan YouTubers (Sepal, Suda, Nuwan, Bharata and many others) run after their profit dollars regardless of the high impact of spreading “false and sarcastic information”. To me, all these men and women are like “flies” found on “garbage or rubbish”.
              :
The media as a whole (mainstream and social media) is hugely complicit in this deception.
              .
No matter what educational background a citizen comes from, they are either passive or support the “false public perception”.
              .
Unfortunately, this is the vicious cycle in this country. Paradoxically, they themselves cry out for “real change”: for this I blame not only the “politicians” but also the “people”.

I am not an academic & don’t have the statistics to support my view, however, there are other indicators, such as, the absence of queues for essential items, to say that normalcy now prevails. In fact, a friend recently sent me a few clips of exotics cars filling up for 100 octane fuel. Even in UK 100 Octane is not available in fuel stations. The minimum requirement by law is 95 & there is 98 for the high performance cars. 99 Octane is available in selected Shell outlets as V power & 102 octane is available for motor racing but in roadside outlets. I am sure you will agree that it self is an indicator of an improved economy since the days of fuel queues.

          Hello SJ,
My sisters back in the UK had both said that Labour would win, however they too were in a Dilemma about who they should vote for. They didn’t want Starmer as Prime Minister, they wanted the Tories out of Government and they also wanted the SNP out of Scotland. So I think they and many others “bit the bullet” and voted for Labour. When they were here in Sri Lanka we spoke about the Economic Crisis and the Foreign Currency problems. They were very worried that the Brexit problems were pushing the UK back to 1950s Austerity. They weren’t convinced that a new Government in either the UK or Sri Lanka would be able to change the decline into poverty in the short term. It is worth looking at the situation in South East Asia (Indonesia, Korea, and Thailand) in 1997. Thailand seems to have made the same mistakes as Sri Lanka https://thanong.tripod.com/112820012.htm
To see how they recovered see the IMF Report https://www.imf.org/external/np/exr/ib/2000/062300.HTM
How long before the UK goes to the IMF?

            Hello Raj-UK,
If you look at the Inflation Rate in the USA and France they both had similar patterns to the UK. A high point in 2022 and a rapid decline after. I think post-Covid Economic Conditions had a lot to do with this, not Sunak per se.
If you look at the European Union graph it is pretty much the same as the UK https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/products-euro-indicators/w/2-17052024-ap

Whatever the reason, inflation came down in Sunak’s watch. Mortgages more than doubled overnight after ‘Trussonomics’ & that effected many households considerably but with a lower inflation, mortgages rates have down now & expected to go down further to about 3% with the anticipated cut in interest rates by the BOE. Whether or not the economy grew statistically, mortgage rates coming down is the reality at ground level.

Just as some in SL are not willing to acknowledge RW’s contribution, it is the same for Sunak in UK. Whether or not RW or Sunak directly influenced the improvement, the fact is that it did under their respective watch & at the hour of need, only they were there whatever the critics have to say..

                Hello Raj-UK,
I remember when Mortgage Rates were 15 % back in around 1989. I was cycling 10 miles to work and the same back rather than take the car. I was paying about 60 % of my Salary to the Building Society. I was one of the luckier ones having only used a rate of 1.5 times my Salary.
The Bank of England was trying to control Inflation through higher Interest Rates when Truss announced her mini Budget. “A key aspect of the announcement was that rather than financing the package by revenue increases or spending cuts elsewhere, it will be deficit financed, leading to a large increase in public borrowing over the near term”. This may have resulted in the rise to 6%. Even if Sunak had a hand in reducing Interest Rates the economists didn’t believe him “Sunak’s comments are basically nonsense. All major parties have committed to keep the same 2 per cent inflation target”

The writing was on the wall that the Tories will lose badly & the buck stops with Sunak as PM. The economy was on a freefall after ‘Trussonomics’, the mortgages which effect almost all households, increased to 7% overnight but under Sunak, the economy stabilised & mortgages are now around 4.5% & expected to go down further with the Bank of England cutting interest rates as inflation goes down. Yet, it was Sunak the fall guy for Boris’s & Liz’s incompetence, just as RW is getting a bashing for the Rajapakses’ & Sirisena’s antics.

I was in a dilemma too. I prefer Sunak with his tax cuts but in principle, I am not a Tory. I respect Corbyn for standing up to his values but Stamer’s treatment of Corbyn & Diane Abbot, true labour veterans, caused doubts about his integrity. In the end, I voted for the Greens because my daughter is passionate about their cause & I like to support the underdog. Like Sunak, I like AKD but not his party & the underdog is the SJB but without SP as its leader. If Trump get elected, that would inspire Rajapakses. What a dilemma.

I had a son of a cousin of mine working for me for about three or four months
and then suddenly stopped reporting to work . One day he showed up for
wanting a reference letter of two years experience . I said to him , I can not do it .
But to help him I offered him a letter of experience without a specific duration .
He agreed . Even out of sympathy , for kinship , you need to be firstly honest with
yourself . Everything has two sides . Now my question about a future change
anticipation from AKD is , why was he and some of his team part of Corrupt and
rogue leaderships in the past ? To display what they are capable of ? They might
have proved that but they also proved they are capable of sitting with any rogue .

They indeed display a complete lack of scruples or principles, embodying the archetype of hypocritical politicians always poised to exact their pound of flesh at any cost, even if it means abandoning all sense of decency in the process. Unfortunately, it is increasingly clear that they have nothing substantive to offer the country. Instead, they are merely capitalizing on the entrenched bitterness of some of our fellow citizens who bear chips on their shoulders.

Typical Sinhalese only interested in criminally treated Palestinians but what about the criminally treated Eelam Tamils, people living in your own country and your fellow citizens. Presume like most Sinhalese, it is a non-issue, and their criminal treatment is fine, and no one should voice any concern, only about the Palestinians as it does not affect the Sinhalese and you look very good voicing concern about them, which is good but not about the Eelam Tamils and what is happening to them, as the Sinhalese look bad internationally and this what you want their marginalization and ultimate structural genocide. This is the fear that the labour may raise concerns with regards to this, as they were the last colonial power to rule the island, in a way responsible to what is happening to the island’s Tamils and Britian is the head of the Commonwealth. Also, Britain still has far more influence and clout internationally than India or China, especially in western democracies, Japan, South Korea and many Southeast Asian and Latin Americal nations and this is a fact. It is because of Britain and other likeminded western nations that Sri Lanka is being is investigated for war crimes not because of India or China, they would have buried it.

Yes, we all know that some people rejoice in the mass murder of their own people and their marginalization, whilst shedding crocodile tears about the plight of the others. They even worship the father and mother of Sinhalese racism and will not brook any criticism of them. It was not Tamils but Sinhalese and Sinhalese nationalism and state sponsored racism that brought this country to this level and bankruptcy. Indeed, you are utterly sick and even disgusting, fawn to any Sinhalese racist and hardliner.

This would have been kind, as well as gently cautioning a young person, not to discuss or reveal their personal or private affairs in a public forum and expose themselves to ridicule by nasty people. Typical Sinhalese racist, whenever someone highlights about the ill-treatment of the island’s Tamils by the Sri Lankan state aided and abetted by its Sinhalese armed forces, police and larger Sinhalese population, they immediately, start to bring the LTTE, into discussion, deliberately to muddy the waters and as an excuse to delay and not grant any rights to the island’s Tamils. I can see through your game In Human Touch. Why did I ever discuss about the LTTE only about just Tamil rights and self-determination/federalism. as soon as you bring this topic up, see even so called western educated so-called liberal Sinhalese, like you, calling yourself Human Touch, goes berserk at the thought or mention of it and starts making all sorts of wild accusations and bring the LTTE, that only came into being because of the Sri Lankan state and racist Sinhalese like you into the picture. This only proves that the island’s Tamils have no hope of getting any justice or rights from the Sri Lankan state, if so, called western educated Sinhalese liberals go berserk at the mention of Tamil rights, and unnecessarily bring the dead and gone LTTE and make all sorts of accusations against any Tamil like me speaking, who dared to mention about what is happening to the island’s Tamils.

        • 13
          2

What will the ordinary Sinhalese, most of whom are only Sinhalese educated and hardly have any access to outside world, other than what their largely racist Sinhalese media, politicians tell them and brainwashed with their Mahavamsa fairy tales and blindly following their racist Buddhist monks? The Tamils were ill-treated marginalized and discriminated from the time of so-called independence long before the LTTE came into the picture and they came into the picture because of this reason, not because of anything else, and the Tamils are still being discriminated, ill-treated just like the Palestinians in their own land and still marginalized even 15 years after the demise of the LTTE. Did I tell anywhere that I thought LTTE was right killing innocent people? So, what is all this deliberate racist rant to muddy the waters In Human Touch? What about your Sinhalese Sri Lankan State, the armed forces, police and many ordinary Sinhalese killing hundreds of thousands of innocent Tamil civilians, especially in May 2009? Chased out around a million indigenous Tamils largely to the west in the last 30 years and before that made another million Indian origin Tamils who had lived on the island for 150 years stateless and forcibly deported most of them to India, a strange to them, to deliberately reduced the percentage of Tamils from around 26% to the present 16% within 70 years, The country is ruined and bankrupt but the persecution and structural genocide of the island’s Tamils goes on very efficiently no matter what.

          • 13
            2

You cunningly do not mention any of this and want to sweep all this under the carpet but keep on harping about the LTTE that was only responsible for around 5% of the killings and massacres of civilians, when the Sinhalese Sri Lankan state is responsible for 95% of this and 99% of their victims were innocent Tamil civilians. That is not an issue to you, like most Sinhalese. Hamas raping and killing innocent civilians and holding people is not an issue to you and all the Sinhalese racists but the LTTTE killing Sinhalese armed forces, thugs and criminals, pretending to be civilians and deliberately settled in Tamil areas by the Sinhalese Sri Lankan state to create trouble for the Tamils living there and to change demography is big issue to you. Boy you are one big hypocritical piece of cake. It is not because of me and the other Tamils that military strength cannot be reduced but because of pretend liberal Sinhalese racist like you that military strength is not being reduced.

What you are telling us is to be quiet, do not ask for your just rights but quietly accept you third rate status in your own land, and the Sinhalization Buddhisization of your lands, and the military will go away but hypocritically jump up and down about the plight of the Palestinians. Hypocritical racist. Your rantings and cunningly trying to accuse me of reviving the LTTE, whenever I speak of Tamil rights does not frighten me. The LTTE will never be revived but that does not mean Tamil rights should not be granted and discussed about and the hypocrisy of most Sinhalese with regards to the Palestinians and the island’s Tamils/ Charity begins at home. Crying about Palestine but committing genocide, war crimes on the island’s Tamils and overtly and covertly supporting it and ranting and raving when someone brings this to the world’s notice and trying to shut them up. Stating they are trying to revive LTTE asking for Tamil rights and self-determination and the LTTE was narcissistic and were killers but we Sinhalese who committed genocide, war crimes and large-scale killings and ethnic cleansing on the island’s Tamils and still are largely doing this and denying Tamil rights are angels and will hypocritically cry about the plight of the Palestinians.

      Hello SJ,
As I have said before stopping the Poaching is Technically pretty straightforward. I know the people than can provide the systems. I have been involved in the Installation Commissioning and Operation of these systems. I even built a Training System that used live data for the Coastguards and others to be trained.
But, first you need a desire on the part of the Government to want to stop the poaching and then you need to find the money for a Pilot Project.
So let me know when you’re ready, your Knowledge of Tamil, Sinhala and English will be indispensable.

The Indian Army is weak, excluding a few Jawans (Punjabis). The Sri Lankan Army could defeat the Indian Army. If you think numbers make a difference, they don’t. Ukraine/Russia is a prime example. I would go so far as to say the Indian Army is weaker than the Ukranian Army. I would even say, the IRA could likely defeat the Indian Army, if push came to shove.

                  Hello Lester,
A married couple (friends of mine in Qatar) were in Kashmir 2019 when the Indian Army brutally killed many people to which they were eyewitnesses. Like the Israelis India kept the International Press out of the Country, shut down the Internet and Mobile Comms while they brutalised the civilian population. That’s how your BJP hero Modi does it.

                    Hello Lanka”Scott”,

In 1987, JRJ was on the verge of completely defeating the LTTE when India forcibly intervened. At one point they nearly caught Prabhakaran (escaped by minutes).
Sri Lanka was forced to sign the Indo-Lanka Accord, after which India sent soldiers to the Jaffna Peninsula. SLA was confined to bunkers. LTTE was supposed to disarm, but they never did. Instead they began fighting with the IPKF, which committed a lot of atrocities, e.g. illegal detention of civilians & shooting up a whole hospital. All the details of Indian atrocities and Indian frustration over getting a severe drubbing from bata-clad teenagers, are available in the UTHR reports, compiled by Hoole and others. Better to read these reports than focus on useless data points from Wikipedia, which provide little to no context.
The logical inference is that if the LTTE could defeat the IPKF, and the SLA could completely defeat the LTTE in 5 years, then the SLA can defeat the IKPF without too much effort. Just like the Islamic militant groups which reign hell in Kashmir and China which defeated India in 1962 (Sino-Indian war). At that time, China was mired in deep poverty, not the superpower it is today.

“At that time, (1962)China was mired in deep poverty, not the superpower it is today.”
Some fake historians forget that in 1953, China, without an effective navy or air force, fought the mighty US to a standstill in Korea.

And India sent 100K soldiers to Sri Lanka, so what’s your point?

Even your favorite website says Sri Lanka was about to eliminate the LTTE when India intervened.

“At the start of the second phase, Sri Lankan listening posts intercepted LTTE communications urgently requesting their cadres in Tamil Nadu to request help to save them from complete destruction from the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. On pressure from the state government of Tamil Nadu, the Indian government demanded the cessation of the offensive, claiming it would end the suffering of the civilian population. “

I would rather believe the “listening posts” (LTTE radio interceptions) than a three-wheeler guy practicing taqiyahh and writing half-truths on the anonymous web.

” This plea aimed to prevent the complete destruction of the LTTE, which was under severe military pressure from Sri Lankan forces. The Tamil Nadu government’s influence led to India’s intervention, resulting in a halt to the offensive”

Just like the LTTE was begging the Indian ambassador to save them during the “White Flag” incident. History is often cyclical.

Indians (Hindus) are physically weak compared to other races because of a lack of protein in their diet.

More lies from the jungle, as usual. But, strangely, in praise of suicide bombers this time.
The IPKF withdrew in 1990. Rajiv was assassinated in 1991.The IPKF was not defeated, it left because the idiot Premadasa did a deal with the LTTE, and died for it himself.
In brutal fighting lasting about three weeks, the IPKF took control of the Jaffna Peninsula from the LTTE, something that the Sri Lankan Army had tried but failed to do.
“These led to the Sri Lankan government’s call for India to quit the island, and they entered into a secret deal with the LTTE that culminated in a ceasefire. But the LTTE and IPKF continued to have frequent hostilities. In April 1989, the Ranasinghe Premadasa government ordered the Sri Lanka Army to clandestinely hand over arms consignments to the LTTE to fight the IPKF…..the new Prime Minister V. P. Singh ordered the withdrawal of the IPKF, and their last ship left Sri Lanka on 24 March 1990.”
“Support for the LTTE in India dropped considerably in 1991, after the assassination of ex-Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi “
“Prabhakaran decided to eliminate Gandhi as he considered the ex-prime minister to be against the Tamil liberation struggle and feared that he might re-induct the IPKF”

                Hello SJ,
I agree but there is method in my madness. Many things that the Israeli Government said about October 7th have turned out to be lies (deliberate lies in some cases). Joe Biden repeated a few of them – mass killing of babies, babies on washing lines and babies beheaded. There were also the systematic use of Rape, since debunked, but still parroted by some Media. The role of the Hannibal Directive on October 7th that led to many Civilians being killed by the IDF is only now coming to light. The Israelis overestimated by around 200 due to the Incineration and mis-identification of bodies. The Hamas fighters did not have weapons capable of this. They insisted that a Calendar in Al Shifa Hospital was a list of Hamas Terrorist names. There is much, much more disinformation out there, which proves “a lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is still lacing up its boots”.
The Israelis are past masters at this, they even have a word for their method of deception – Hasbara.
It is tedious, but the Lesters of this world have to be countered or the Rajapakses will be back in power.
                Best regards

“In sinhala we say that there is no medicine for stupidity.”

Today the whole world looks at Sri Lanka as an island full of modern day slaves. Today we need every dollar so I promoted some of my colleagues (biologists, medical specialists, biomedical engineers from Italy, Germany, Switzerland and UK) to visit the country. I think dozens came to the country last year.
Most of them love the natural beauty of our country. Some of them like to visit the country again. They are middle-class Europeans who have spent a lot of money in the country. But they repeat that people are very poor even if they always have a smile on their face.
Many preferred the tranquil beaches and Buddhist temples. However, they questioned the violence against animals even though Buddhism is dominant. Their focus was harming elephant in the guise of buddhist parades and why do we decorate them for our content and and… As usual I became speechless, and I do believe we should stop abusing animals for our buddhistic rituals, repsecting their animal rights.
The biggest question is in a country where human rights of the minorites are a dillema, how can they gurantee about animal rights ?

PG in UK to become a specialist doctor take 2 years or so. Some lanken oncologists challenge that the education in Sri Lanka is the best despite receiving two years of training. In contrast, European and american oncologists and cardiologists train for at least 5 years before becoming specialists, and their training is a lifelong process.

I spoke to one of the leading Oncologists in Maharagama more than a year ago now. He was very impressed by the UK Health Service despite its manpower problems. His opposite number in Kandy was also of the same opinion, she had worked for some time in Birmingham (Queen Elizabeth Hospital I think). Both were very concerned at the steady loss of Doctors, Consultants and Nurses to Europe, the UK and other Countries.

THanks LS, Just to tell you, 3 weeks ago, I was in a business meeting near to Hamburg in Schleswig-Holstein. So I’m used to relying on public transport within the city. There, on my way back to the hotel after my duties at the university clinic, I came to know 3 x young Indian girls waiting for the bus heading to their boarding houses.
I started a small talk with them and learned that MODI#s government has initiated a new kind of bilateral agreements enabling “caregivers/attendents” from India to Germany as well. Instantly I had mindful of questions as to why our government doesn’t make such deals so that our well-trained youth have the opportunity to work in Germany and some other countries for a few years.
These girls who I chatted with revealed that they can extend their work visa only for 3 years as per their wish.
They were still learning the German language while working in hospitals. I alsohear from other countries in europe that they are short of caregivers and attendents. This is what srilanken govt should focus on the kind of agreements in order to allow some youth to get to work for some years.

These losers are good at misquoting, or better yet, they don’t quote at all. According to Lanka”Scott”, these individuals display some kind of higher intelligence, similar to his hero who married a 9 year old and let his followers behead 600 Jews in one day (somewhere a Galloway is salivating). Just don’t draw a cartoon, or you might lose your head too. Rushdie would know. There was actually one incident, a UK army soldier, Lee Rigby, was decapitated in broad daylight in London by some useless migrant.

You left out the part that the two Nigerian men were recent converts to Islam. They used kitchen knives, very similar to the ones used by ISIS when beheading people like journalist Daniel Pearle. That’s the only reason they failed; inexperience. It’s like saying, “I tried to run over LankaScot, but the brakes failed. Surely I’m innocent and should get a lighter sentence. Before my next attempt, when the brakes won’t malfunction.” So now, where is your condemnation of head chopping, aside from your lack of condemnation of child marriage and the destruction of 360 idols at Mecca?

                    Hello Lester,
Stop rambling, I was merely correcting your usual half-truths. Michael Adebolajo converted to Islam 10 years before the killing in 2013. Michael Adebowale converted to Islam in 2009. Both had been Christians. The 2 homicidal maniacs got the sentence they deserved. I am not a supporter of the Death Penalty which I and most European Countries think is Barbaric. The Chopping of heads or hands is Barbaric no matter who does it. And I have condemned Child Marriage in a previous comment yesterday and some time back when I mentioned Katherine Mayo’s bestselling 1927 book, Mother India, about the horrific practice in India. You should read it, as there is a clear approval by Hinduism for the practice, so do you condemn Hinduism?

For the record, my business is not to extract personal info from commentators but if they claim to be “atheist” and defend a particular religion, then they are being dishonest. It’s looking more and more like you are in fact no atheist but a Muslim. The only reason I mention this is because you claim to be an atheist and you stake your CT reputation on it. I have given you multiple opportunities to condemn child marriage and various other infallibilities related to Mohammad, but not a single condemnation from you in that regard is forthcoming. Readers can draw their own conclusions. Lanka”Scot” here says Buddha was illiterate and engaged in sophistry, Jesus possibly had illegitimate children, etc. yet Mohammad somehow engaged only in saintly behavior.

There is no half-truth. The people who tried to behead Rigby were indoctrinated by extremist Wahhabi ideology. As were the Easter Attack suicide bombers and the thousands of young men recruited from the EU by ISIS.
My opinion of Hinduism does not matter here. You are attempting to deflect from the question by appealing to a red herring. The original question remains, do you or do you not condemn the child marriage of Mohammad to 9 year old Aisha?

Lying as usual. I never mentioned “siphon.” A siphon moves the liquid from higher to lower elevation.

There is no coastline in Kandy. The goal was to expel the Portugese. This is what happens when weak minds quote from Wikipedia.

You laid out the principle of a siphon to explain a pump. You didn’t explicitly mention a siphon because you didn’t know that was what you were describing.
You said , once you get the initial flow, it will continue with no energy expended. Try quantum mechanics next time.
“There is no coastline in Kandy. The goal was to expel the Portugese. “
There were no Portuguese. It was the Dutch who took the coastline in exchange for withdrawing from Kandy.

So know you admit I never said “siphon”, that is just some dumb assumption you came up. You don’t understand how a siphon works. It only works from a higher to a lower elevation. A pump works from lower to higher elevation. You cannot pump water up a mountain or canyon using a siphon. Try finishing grade 8 next time.

” It was the Dutch who took the coastline in exchange for withdrawing from Kandy.”

Man, you are a natural-born liar. Cognitively impaired Leela and naive foreigners will believe you, otherwise what you write is sheer nonsense. The Kandyans allied with the Dutch to expel the Portugese. Once the Portugese left, the Dutch retained control of the coastline. There was no “exchange for withdrawing from Kandy.” The Dutch withdrew from Kandy before expelling the Portugese.

                      Lester the drunk liar,
The Dutch occupied Kandy in 1765. The Portuguese left a hundred years earlier in 1658. Of course, it is possible that the Dutch used their 300 psi time machine to expel the Portuguese 🤣🤣🤣🤣https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kandyan%E2%80%93Dutch_war_(1764%E2%80%931766)#:~:text=The%20Dutch%2DKandy%20War%20of,Sri%20Lanka%20to%20Dutch%20control.The Dutch-Kandy War of 1764-1766 marked a military conflict between the Dutch East India Company and the Kingdom of Kandy, culminating in the occupation of Kandy by Dutch forces and the subsequent transfer of the entire coastal territory of Sri Lanka to Dutch control.”
                      You are sooo pathetic.

Old Loser keeps omitting the part that the Kandyans formed an alliance with the Dutch to expel the Portugese. Old Loser does not distinguish between the Kandyan Kingdom and the other kingdoms. This guy is a complete idiot.

*My initial claim was that the Kandyans kept the Europeans away (from Kandy) for hundreds of years and that claim is unrefuted.

                    Hello Lester,
Many people can read without understanding the content. From a previous Comment by me –
“And I have condemned Child Marriage in a previous comment yesterday and some time back when I mentioned Katherine Mayo’s bestselling 1927 book, Mother India, about the horrific practice in India. You should read it, as there is a clear approval by Hinduism for the practice, so do you condemn Hinduism?”
Now what part of the above do you not understand? Or will you get into trouble with your boss Modi if you answer the question?
                    Best regards

“that this was just a tactical retreat on the part of the Kandyans.”
Yes, of course, such a great tactical retreat that they had to sign away the entire coastline to the Dutch.
Oh, BTW, I picked up a guy from the jungle in my three wheeler .He had a fake American accent and made off with the gold-plated statue of PBUH on the back shelf. I am not saying it was you of course. But there was a strong smell of bullshit.

LS, you being an expert in all kind of pumps, I have a genuine question. Can a lonely STEM expert have intimate relationship with AI assisted robot, using siphon, ” once you get going it will continue with no energy “. (ps 300 pump may be too much). Recently a robot killed it self ( suicide ) because it was over worked. ( no kidding, happened in Korea , or is it Japan ?? )

“Sri Lanka has a well-trained navy”

Even Malawians can say the same about their navy. Moreover, Somalis would be proud to say so.
You always seem to avoid responding. what is wrong with you/ when would you grow up ?

There was indifference on the part of the government in the early stages.
But it has allowed itself to be pressurized by India for too long.
Arrests and detention by the Navy and the fishing community of Jaffna are rendered void by Indian state intervention.
        BTW
What do you have in mind for me?

          Hello SJ,
I worked for Airbus for 11 years in Qatar as part of their Defence and Space Division. In conjunction with Terma and others they produced a system known as NSS (National Security Shield), Dar al Wattan in Arabic. None of this is secret, they even have a website. https://diwan.gov.qa/briefing-room/news/activities-and-occasions/2021/march/31/hh-the-amir-visits-the-national-security-shield-center?sc_lang=en
This system provided complete protection of the EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zone) and the Border with Saudi.
We completed a Pilot back in 2009 using a much smaller Mobile system that could cover the Northern Areas of Sri Lanka with ease, https://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/gulf/qatar-shield.htm
Now if you have any likely interest from the Political powers then I can provide more details,
          Best regards

              Hello SJ,
Sorry to hear that, in Qatar we had one or two Multilingual personnel that were essential in determining the overall objectives and ensuring that they were consistent across the project. In a large project like this it was essential that all documentation was clear and consistent in all languages. The official language was English and the vast majority of the Qataris spoke perfect English, however at the operational levels there were many that did not. Plus when dealing with sub-contractors it was essential to ensure that your requirements were explicitly understood. All Training Documentation was bi-lingual although delivery was in English, a knowledge of Arabic was very useful. I am sure that there will be similar issues in a Sri Lankan Project like this. Plus a comprehensive understanding of the Engineering helps in the development of materials used in teaching Trainees/Students and the Upper Management.
              Best regards
