The protesters marched peacefully through Kalutara town, south of Colombo. Last month, thousands of Buddhist monks and lay supporters stormed the mosque in the central town of Dambulla, saying it was constructed illegally.
But residents say it has been there for nearly half a century, long before the area was declared a sacred zone. The government announced that the mosque and a Hindu temple would be demolished and relocated.
Muslim clerics and politicians have strongly opposed the decision. An organiser of today’s protest, Asoka Menikkgoda, said the government should safeguard Buddhism, the state religion, and not yield to Muslim pressure.

WOW :) Long live Buddhism… We have to fight hard – violently if needed – to protect it. Buddha would die again if comes to Earth.
We are celebrating Vesak for what?????

‘Buddhism’ a Philosophy of Gautham Buddha, today Institutionalised by the followers, the clergy as the custodians and the laity as the protectors and providers of succor to the Priests. Lord Buddha did not appoint any custodians nor preached, that this Philosophy belonged to any, as it is free to all, to practice. The Philosophy Buddhism is distorted by the followers that they believe in a process of collecting merit by offering flowers and alms to the Sangha in order to achieve Nirvana. Even worshipping a supposed tooth, as a relic has no meaning and place in his preachings, because he very clearly explained this human body as a ‘Putrid Mass’. This practice of venerting relics of individuals has crept in to Buddhism from Jainism which is much older to Buddhism. Nirvana is reached only through the development of one’s intuitive mind through meditation and not otherwise. Lord Buddha attained enlightenment, through similar development of the intuitive mind and not through passing examinations or worshipping of objects of veneration.

I am a buddhist and always will be.. but Sri Lanka is the only place on earth where all religions live peacefully long side each other.. pls do not become like all those other countries where religious fights take place for what reason..!
let this muslim mosque be along side the buddhist temple..or area.. it is only one mosque and let the muslims have their prayers while buddhist do theirs the buddhist way!
Pls do not fight for these things as it is not worth it!
I pray that no such religious battles will ever come in Sri Lanka…
pls to the government of SL – let SL be the same land where no such religious issues had occurred as so far no such has happened. IF this mosque has been there for half a century then let it be so and look forward in peace than this fighting!
Buddhism will prevail in SL for sure but not with violence and intolerance….
Muslims know that SL is a buddhist country and they will respect it as long as buddhist people and ther government respect theirs…
This kind of stuff is not worth in the long run!

well done dj.I’m not saying this because I’m a muslim but as a person
who has seen the world in its real form and as a true srilankan. The curse here is Srilankan budhist leader’s stupid dream of making Srilanka, like another country which they have visited.Monks are interpreting it to their advantage,pseudo-patriotics to theirs, rcists to theirs and so on.All this at the cost of loss of one’s own identity and creating chaos.THEY ARE NOT HAPPY ABOUT BEING THEMSELVES AND WANT
TO BE SOMEBODY ELSE.EVEN THE MONKS ARE NOT EXEMPT OR SPARED.WHAT DO THEY WANT TO BE?THEY BELIEVE IN THEIR OWN LIES.THAT IS THE WORST PART.
LTTE DESTROYED, BUT NOT TAMILS.THEY THINK THEY DID THIS.THAT IS HOW THEY WERE MADE TO BELIEVE.THEY IGNORED THAT WITHOUT MORE THAN 75% OF OUTSIDE HELP AND SUPPORT OF ALL LOCAL COMMUNITIES THIS CAN NOT HAPPEN. HOW QUICKER THEY ARE AFTER ANOTHER COMMUNITY, IF THEY DID NOT BELIEVE THEIR OWN LIES.

…..all this thuggery is planned so well to distract attention from the implementation of the provisions of the 13th amendment and the LLRC recommendations……
‘they’ are trying to scare off the minorities…… to silence them… the international community should watch this carefully…… NATO troops have almost finished in Afghanistan so….. maybe they are being welcomed here……

This is the time of Wesak where the so called Buddhists are celebrating the birth, enlightenment and the demise of the founder of the Philosophy Lord Buddha. I can not help but see the naivete of all who are bent on distorting the essence of this Great Philosophy to fullfil personal agendas individually or collectively. I believe the masses are looking for an identity. Hence a ‘Sinhala Buddhist Flag’ not designed by Lord Buddha but by the adherents, hoisted to identify with the rest. Their Religious fervour is displayed, lighting and illuminating Pandals and lanterns for public display, again looking for identity. There are competitions for such and prizes awarded. What a mockery we are making of ‘Wesak’? I humbly differ from the rest as I light one lamp, not seen by others, but myself within me in my heart for reverance, as I do not look for any identity as I trek this journey of samsara.

Style of Bosnia, even Kosovo is offing in Sri Lanka now. It looks like world bodies have almost given up all hope of finding so called indigenous solutions. Few drops from Air like what did in Kosovo and landing few thousand soldiers from NATO would do the medicine for south extremists. That’s what’s they asking for.

Removal of the mosque would be un-Buddhist and a violation of Buddhist principles of Ahimsa and tolerance which the majority of men in saffron robes in Lanka seem to have forgotten!
Meanwhile what are the so-called Mahanayakes – leaders of the Sangha doing while Buddhist principles are being violated by criminals in monks robes? Are they asleep?
The Ganaga ramaya monk who has been having fireworks rather than meditation at Vesak!
They should intervene, learn and teach some dhamma and vinaya!

In Malaysia and Indonesia, Buddhists and Hindus have difficulty running temples. You can’t even send a Vesak card to Muslim countries. Malaysia, Indonesia, Maldives, Afghanistan and most other Central Asian nations were predominantly Buddhist. Muslims are humble, when they are the minority. They are the monsters, when they are the majority. Most Sri Lankan scholars and intellectuals condemning the Dambulla are the laughing stock in inner circles of Muslims. Muslims are grateful to such people like most of those on this form. It is sad that Sri Lankan Buddhists and Hindus are attacked both by their own kind and dollar-maniac NGOs.

Please do not compar us to other countries, specially Malaysia… we had a better culture and a better society before a President and his brothers came into power swept on the waves of militant Sinhala Buddhism.

are.But you didn’t know that they were humble even when they were in

muslims.800yrs not enough to finish off hindus? Are you advising the

Budhha ia a man lived and died 2500 years back. Gog in Muslim religion is a myth. Spending money on religion is waste. This will only help politician hide major issues like hunger and poverty.

Tolerence was a quality praised by the Buddha. In the past Buddhism was the only docterine for which wars were not foughtin its name and blood was not shed. Sadly the present community of monks[Mahanayakas included] in Sri Lanka are advocating a docterine which is equivelant to thatof the Taliban. Thus they have completely distorted the pristine Dhamma that the Buddha expounded. It is only a handful of buddhist monks and laymen who pracrice the Dhamma according to the way shown by the Buddha .The culprits of this shameful incident which occured in Dambulla should realize that they are insulting the Buddha and bringing his name to disrepute by their disgraceful behavior
/
ROSHAN / May 9, 2012
It is sad that even with the benefit of 2500 years of culture we continue to witness intolerant behaviour from people who should be preaching tolerance. Nor do some of the remarks made here by way of comments inspire any confidence.

I am a Muslim, but I am against some of the acts my society currently does. For example, I see many Muslims begging outside mosques after every prayer. Hundreds of Muslim men, women and children beg outside every mosque on Friday noon. I don’t think Allah or his Messenger would have asked Muslims to build mosques without feeding those poor people. If I am allowed, I will sell those mosques and distribute the money to those poor families and ask the Muslims to pray under hot sun or rain. If still more poor Muslims gather outside to beg, I will ask those devotees to work to feed those poor people during the time they spend for praying.
After all, what is the meaning of building beautiful mosques and praying while your brothers, sisters and children beg for their living.
That big index fingered monk is no different from many of our priests. Sri Lanka needs somebody to save her from the religious leaders and politicians.

Beggars are on the rise.Begging in modern Slk is a booming industry run
by organised criminals. So don’t single out muslims and expect muslims
to live under strict islamic law in a multi cultural non-islamic environment.Your kind of Islam is not in existance even in S arabia.
You find beggars everywhere. It’s always a small number of muslim business community that looksafter a reasonable amount of poor muslims and trying to blame them won’t help.By the way,do you know how budhist monks are supposed to find their food? Let someone else answer it.

Can anyone explain me, what happen to the tomb of Queen Kusumasana?
/
whywhy / May 13, 2012
Thilaka,
All I know about Kusumasanadevi/Dona Catherina burialsite is that, she’s
buried at Walimanthota in Kegalle,in a land of 7 acres owned by her
and declared an archaeological site by H C P Bell, the archaeoligical
commissioner. But to put things I feel the way that you want,is to tell here, what really happened to that site?Definitely right time for
exposing the hypocracy of false heroes. This is a heritage site,a figure involved in protecting and giving the country “Daladamaligawa”
the most venerated place by budhists and this great lady’s own place
has been reduced to mere perches by allowing encroachers to occupy the land. What more can I say?

Well buddhist have right to chase muslims out of their land. So now its our turn to chase buddhist beggars out of our arab land. we can increase poverty and joblessness over night. Its time we just think out of our own selfish self existence. If they want a fight we better give them one not to be forgotten for another millennium.

First of all this buddhist monk does not look like a monk at all. Monks are usually vegetarians and look more skinny and kind. But he looks like well fed P.. and a ruffian who is more suitable for Army. You brand British as colonists, but what have you done to poor plantation workers, what did you do to minority tamils in Colombo in 1983. This is the reason why the Sri Lankans are roaming in ME with no peace at all. Change your mind set or you will perish.
