Sri Lankan Muslims Are Low Caste Tamil Hindu Converts Not Arab Descendants

By Rifat Halim

The recent execution of Rizana Nafeek in Saudi Arabia  has underlined the bogus claim of Arab ancestry by Sri Lankan Muslims (formerly known as Ceylon Moors). Ms. Nafeek, a domestic worker from a poor family in the East of Sri Lanka, spoke no language but Tamil. She requested a Tamil translator but was provided with a Malayalam-speaking minor employee whose command of the Tamil language was said to be insufficient. The Saudi authorities showed no clemency. Also, they refused to recognize her as a person of Arab descent. Her status was indistinguishable from that of any foreigner in that country.

Ponnanbalam Ramanathan in 1906 with his future wife, Ms. Harrison (right)

A fierce controversy has been raging for many years in the country about the origins of the Tamil-speaking Muslims.  In 1885, Sir Ponnambalam Ramanathan stated in a speech to the Ceylon Legislative Council that the Tamil-speaking Muslims are low caste Hindus who converted to Islam. Ramanathan’s thesis was that the Ceylon Moors, as the Sri Lankan Muslims were then called, were Muslim by religion and Tamil by ethnicity. Therefore, they did not deserve a separate seat in the Legislative Council.

In a paper presented to the Royal Asiatic Society in 1888, Ramanathan said the Tamil-speaking Muslims share more than just a language with the Tamils. He provided clinching evidence of the Tamil cultural features of the Tamil-speaking Muslims in the island.  He pointed to Tamil  customs such as tying the Tali , the eating of Patchoru, and the use of Alatti, that were prevalent among the Tamil-speaking Muslims. Many Sri Lankan Muslim names such as Periya Marikkar and Sinna Lebbe are clearly Tamil. Also, he said that the Tamil Hindus and the Tamil-speaking Muslims were physically indistinguishable.

Ramanathan later became the first elected leader of the country. He defeated Sir Marcus Fernando in the famous battle for the Educated Ceylonese Seat in 1911.

Over 128 years after Ramanathan’s speech, his thesis is intensely relevant. In every part of the Indian subcontinent, the Muslims claim South Asian descent except for the Tamil-speaking Muslims of Sri Lanka. The Tamil-speaking Muslims in India identify themselves as Tamils.  The former President of India Abdul Kalam, a nuclear scientist, unequivocally calls himself a Tamil. AR Rahman, the Grammy award-winning musician states considers himself a Tamil.

Other leaders of Indian subcontinent have similarly embraced their South Asian ancestry. In India, many Muslims identify themselves as Kannadigas, Gujaratis, Kashmiris, Tamils and Malayalees. MA Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, said he was a Gujarati. ZA Bhutto always said that he was a Sindi. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman stated that he was a Bengali. The vast majority of Bangladeshi say they are Bengalis. The largest ethnic group in Pakistan are the Punjabis. There is even a small Tamil Muslim community in Karachi.

Tamil is the mother tongue of over 99% of the Sri Lankan Muslims. The Islamic sermons are overwhelmingly delivered in Tamil even in the Sinhalese majority districts of Kandy, Matara and Galle. Gujarati Muslims in Sri Lanka like myself cannot follow the Islamic sermons in that inpenetrable Dravidian language.

The Sri Lankan Muslim claim of Arab ancestry is not corroborated by the Arabs themselves. They treat the Sri Lankan Muslims as lowly converts speaking a strange tongue. Many Tamil-speaking Muslims from Sri Lanka have gone to the Middle-East looking for a homecoming. But, the homecoming was not forthcoming, as the cruelty inflicted on Rizana Nafeek shows.

There can be no greater endorsement of Ramanathan’s view than the hysterical response of the Sri Lankan Muslims.  Massive tomes consisting of fake geneology and spurious theories have published to support the Arab origins.  Ramanathan has been angrily vilified well into the 21st century.  Anger often follows an uncomfortable truth.

The angry authors include ILM Abdul Azeez, the President of the Moors Union, who claimed in the Muslim Guardian in 1907 that “Most of the ancestors of the Ceylon Moors were, according to tradition, members of the family of Hashim.” He did not explain how the vast majority of the Ceylon Moors do not speak a single word of Arabic, but overwhelming speak Tamil. Other specious claims have been made by irate academics such as Qadri Ismail and Mirak Raheem. These include the curious claim that the Arab traders spoke Tamil because they married Tamil women.

The anti-Halal campaign of the Bodhu Bala Sena has put the Muslims of Sri Lanka back in the spotlight. Former Ambassador Izeth Hussain has written in the Island recently that the Sri Lankan Muslims are the most servile minority in the country.

Izeth Hussain is  correct. Sri Lankan Muslims have prostrated themselves in front of the communal Sinhalese politicians. Sir Razik Fareed voted for Sinhala to be made the sole official language in 1944 and 1956. In 1948-9, Dr. MCM Kaleel and Dr. TB Jayah, who were both in the Cabinet, supported the disenfranchisement of the Indian community. In August 1983, Dr Kaleel, then President of All Ceylon Muslim League, justified the massacre as a legitimate response to the Tamil demand for separate state. He objected to the walkout in the Indian Parliament by the Indian Muslim League, who were protesting against the anti-Tamil pogrom. Dr. Kaleel was blind to the fact that many Muslims were killed in the 1983 as they were mistaken for Tamils.

The Sri Lankan Muslim are neither fish nor fowl. The Arabs have rejected them. The Sinhala Buddhists and Tamil Hindus are aghast at their specious claims.

Hence, it is high time that the Sri Lankan Muslims embrace their Tamil ethnicity. Tamil is the oldest spoken language in the Indian subcontinent. Islamic Tamil literature has a thousand year heritage. Tamil is the most secular language in this region. There is a vast body of Tamil literature that embraces Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity, Jainism and Islam.  Ramanathan was an apostle of peace and unity. Following him will bring unity to this island and end the misgivings of this complexed minority.

    Hello Rifat Salim,

It is better to stick to facts, because they are easy to defend.

    SOME FACTS:

The Genographic Project Confirms Humans Migrated Out of Africa through Arabia. New analytical method approaches the unstudied 99% of the human genome.

WASHINGTON, D.C., – 02 Nov 2011: Evolutionary history shows that human populations likely originated in Africa, and the Genographic Project, the most extensive survey of human population genetic data to date, suggests where they went next. A study by the Project finds that modern humans migrated out of Africa via a southern route through Arabia, rather than a northern route by way of Egypt. These findings will be highlighted today at a conference at the National Geographic Society.

HERE IS SOME SPECULATION:You Decide if true or Not True, based on data.

    1. Ponnambalam Ramanathan is a politician and opportunist, like people before him, Monk Mahanama, and after him like SWRD, JR, Chelvanayakam, Budu Bala Sena, Rajapaksa etc.

    2. Ponnabalam Ramananathan is a Low cast Tamil Sakkiliya, because he has the same Southern Indian Gene composition as the Sakkiliyas and Low case Tamils.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genographic_Project

There is a Table There that shows the gene diversity and original location of the genes.

    3. Ponnabalam Ramananathan is a Low cast Tamil Sakkiliya, who came from East Africa and Arabia, like the low caste Sakkiliyas, because he has the same Southern Indian Gene composition as the Sakkiliyas and Low case Tamils.

    4. The Sinhalese and Tamils are the same as Ponnambalam Ramanathan.

      Amarasiri,

Thanks for both your above comments. It is funny that even in the 21st century, where science has exploded many myths regarding race and information technology has made it possible for us learn of many subjects easily from our homes, our foolishness as humans yet continues unchanged.

This is crazy for anyone to attack Mr. Halim as casteist. The point of this article is not about lower or higher caste. Everyone knows that the vast majority of Tamils who converted to either Christianity or Islam were poor **low caste landless Tamils. Many Tamils were forced to convert to Islam during the Islamic rule in Tamil Nadu. The poor, low caste Hindus who could not pay higher taxes and who want to save their daughter from Islamic rulers and Muslim government officials also converted to Islam in India.

The vast majority of Muslims in Sri Lanka are the immigrants from Tamil Nadu and Kerala coast. The Turkish, Afghan and Arabic pakirs, Imams and the pilgrims of the Sufi saints who visited these Tamil Muslim settlements might have contributed to the Tamil Muslim’s gene pool. We have so many Arabic Sufi saints Darghas(Tombs) in Tamil Nadu and in the North East. There are many light skinned Christians among the Sinhalese because the Portuguese encouraged ther men to marry local females. But we do not see all those Tamil and Sinhala Christians claim that they were Portuguese like the Tamil speaking Muslims of Sri Lanka.

The North Eastern Muslims leadership has always been hijacked by the Malay or Southern Muslims who have their political and economical interests in the South. Post independence Malay origin Muslim leaders did not have anything common with Tamils. They wanted to create a separate religious identity from Tamils in order to please the Sinhalese and get more benefits from the anti Tamil Sinhala regimes of Sri Lanka. Everyone knows that the Sri Lankan Muslims are a shrewd minority, if you don’t believe me ask the BBS. :)

(**Many high caste Tamil families also converted to Christianity in Jaffna to take advantage of education and jobs during the colonial period. They were called Panchardsara Christians. Pancha + adsaram means 5 letters of the sacred Hindu chanting ‘na- ma- si-va-ya’. Similarly the words sa-m-pa-la-m means salary in Tamil also has 5 letters. That’s why they were sarcastically called pancha adsara Christians, i.e the Christians who converted for Salary. )

As for Zaneera, am surprised at your summing of The Arabs, have you ever been to Arabia? have you lived there? if not do not generalize and do not tarnish a people based on hear say of The enemies of Islam and become one of them if you are truly a Muslim remember your sight, your hearing and your speech will be questioned one day by God.,I have lived a very long period there, the one you and others refer are the same kinds you find in every community and every country ,do not go by here say and about you looking more like Sinhalese is obvious because we do have some Sinhala in our genes ,but do not over do it in fear to evade God’s test what we are all bravely facing today Praise be to God.
or do not try to curry favor it wont work. As for the rest of The Desperate Tamils of Venom just accept the game is over.

And BTW MR.”ONE” Why not Long live Israel they not only helped wipe out your Cowardly hero Praba and team , GL has been promised that Israel will do all they can to keep you guys where you are for ever.. Long Live Israel.

There is still some milk in your Sinhalese masters so milk them. So you give tuition is it. We will call you Arabs. But have a look at them stand by them and see. A crow will never be a peacock. Praise the lord Mahinda and read the Mahinder Chindanaya in your prayer, the Sinhalese have learnt all your trick. All you can pray for is another war between the Sinhalese and Tamils so that you can thrive and do business. Sri Lankans are not fools they have leaned many lessons.

LOL Fahim your 100% support and idea failed :D your mahinda is kicked out now. And not just that. Tamils will always be the majority of North and East don’t worry no one can do anything about that. Even the current government has assured that.No wonder you guys are being attacked by Buddhist extremists. Remember the idea you supported? 100%? If that had happened even you guys wouldn’t have been majority in the one or 2 districts you are in. Just some few 20-30 sinhalese family resettling in north-central province wont mean the guv tried to push Tamils out of there so as to remove them from being Majority. The guv knows that wont happen and that is not possible. They dont want another war so they have given the North and East Majority Tamils more autonomy and privileges.

    Beruwela — a multi-faceted historic city

    AL-Haj A. H. M. Azwer MP
    Minister of Parliamentary Affairs
In the fifteenth century, Devinuvara was one of the flourishing cities in the island. Other noteworthy parts were Beruwela, Bentota, Galle, Weligama. Beruwela, noted earlier, was perhaps the most prosperous. It was a busy settlement of Muslim merchants with many beautiful mansions and large, ‘permanent” shops. (R. A. L. H Gunawardana in Sri Lanka and the Silk Road of the Sea)

Historians of repute, both local and foreign, have always noted that Beruwela was indeed a prosperous city with its flourishing port. Indeed it was this Port, situated 56 Kilometres south of the capital Colombo, which brought the city its fame and prosperity.

It was no surprise that Beruwela assumed such a significant position, as it is located at the centre of the ancient sea route between the East and the West, alongside other port cities such as Colombo and Galle. According to reliable historical records, the Arabs landed in Beruwela even before the advent of Islam which was in the 6th century A.D. After they embraced Islam, the Islamic tradition and culture too found its way in to ancient Ceylon through Beruwela, paving the way for the Sinhala Kings to establish a strong bond with the Islamic world.

    W. J. M. Lokubandara, the present Minister of Justice, Law Reform and National Integration and Leader of the House and a respected scholar of Buddhist history, opines that the teachings of Buddhism too inspired the ancient Kings to seek knowledge and understanding of other cultures. He says that the ‘ehipassika’ (come and see) formula, which is much valued by Buddhists, eschews the condemnation of other religions, and deserves close scrutiny and understanding. He also adds that, presumably, it was this open minded view that influenced King Agrabodhi to send a Sri Lankan delegation to Iraq, by way of the Silk Routes, for the purpose of making a study of the doctrine of the Prophet. Such lines of contact must have influenced the Arab traveller Ibn Batuta to come to Sri Lanka to seek out the sacred Samantakuta Mountain, ‘just forty leagues from Paradise.’ Identified with the ‘footprints that kindled the faith of those who came from the Middle East, while the famous gem fields in the area offered an enticing commodity to merchants from that region, thus satisfying the demands of both religion and commerce (in Sri Lanka and the Silk Road of the Sea).

    R. A. L. H. Gunawardana elucidating on the presence of Arabs, Berbers and the ritual of whirling dances at Beruwela, suggests of a close connection between Ceylon and the Mamluk Kingdom of Egypt, which existed from 1250 to 1517 A.D. The initiatives of King Buvanekabahu appear to have brought forth some permanent results in the establishment of a settlement of merchants from the Mamluk Kingdom at Beruwela and the introduction of the influence of the Mawlawiya Sect. It is noteworthy, he says, that the Dambadeni Asna, in which the earliest reference to the land of the Berbers occurs, was written in the reign of the third or the fourth king who bore the name Parakramabahu, that is, between 1287 and 1293 or between 1302 and 1326 which would be soon after or close to the reign of Buvanekabahu.

Beruwela, according to some historians derived its name from two Sinhala words, viz. Be (lower) and Ruwala (sail), which denotes the place where the sails of the Arab merchant vessels were lowered. However another version traces the name to the famed North African (Berber) traveller Abu Yusuf al-Barbari, who is believed to have introduced Islam to the Maldivians.

In fact, Arabs called this place as Berberyn. Berr.. Berr.. which means to stop or pause. When the early Arab settlers arrived by sea and on sighting a tiny islet, they, overcame with joy, cried out “Berr.. Berr..” to their oarsmen of the Catamarans to stop. This island call Berberyn still adds picturesque atmosphere to the environs of the area in the sea waters almost facing Alfasiyathun Nasriya Muslim Girls Vidyalaya, the first Muslim school set up in the island, thereby Beruwela assuming prominence in yet another domain, i.e. pioneering Muslim female education at the very spot where their forefathers landed.

The renowned Muslim traveller mentioned earlier, Ibn Batuta, who has written much about Sri Lanka in his travelling episodes, is also a Berber. The Arabs, who possessed a tremendous knowledge of the sea routes, were inevitably employed by the Sinhalese Kings to handle the country’s commerce and trade. They were also sent as ambassadors to the Islamic empires, which were in fact regarded as the ‘super powers’ of that era.

    Royal physicians

A significant contribution of the Arabs in Sri Lanka, the Unani medicine system, found its way to this country through Beruwela. Tradition has it that in the 10th Century, Prince Jamal-ud-din, the son of the Sultan of Konya (in Asia Minor) arrived here and practised Unani medicine. According to Dr. C. G. Uragoda, Unani physicians at first transmitted their medical knowledge orally to members of their own families. Later, information was written down in Tamil language in Arabic script, and kept within the family. Many of the medical plants found in the Kandyan areas and used in Ayurveda began to be employed in the Unani system too. Unani drugs were brought to the country by trading vessels coming from Arabia and the Persian Gulf. These drugs consisted of mainly syrups, which contained ingredients such as rose petals, grapes, dates and musk. Many local constituents were also made use of.

Many Unani physicians have had the honour to serve the Kings in the palace as well. For instance, Muhandiram Mohamed Odeyar who belonged to the famous Behethge clan, served as a physician to the Kandyan Kings.

Even the princes of Maldives sailed to Ceylon in order to get treatment from the Unani physicians. It was also a common sight those days in Beruwela and other parts of the country where the Maldivians used to sell their products, the delicious Bondi Haluva and Diya Hakuru. Following the rapid development that took place in Maldive Islands under the leadership of President Gayoom, they became prosperous and the sight of Maldivians selling these items gradually disappeared from our country.

Although the Unani medical practice has declined significantly in Sri Lanka, quite a number of them could still be found practising in various parts of the country, including in Beruwela. The grandfather of former Speaker, Deshamanya Alhaj M. A. Bakeer Markar was an established Unani physician of the area. Muslims use the term ‘Hakeem’ when referring to a physician, which means literally a person of wisdom in Arabic. In Beruwela, the ‘Hakeem Villa,’ still stands as a monument to this family of physicians. Former Speaker Bakeer Markar, distinguished educationist S. L. M. Shafie Marikar, senior lawyer of the area A. W. M. Razik Marikar and the present Minister of Mass Communications Imthiaz Bakeer Markar hail from this illustrious lineage. Their ancestors came from Hazramouth in Arabia (present day Yemen) in the 7th Century A.D. It is said that four vessels sailed from Yemen with three Sultans, namely, Bad-urdin, Salah-ud-din and Mohamed. They landed at Mannar and settled there. Sad-ur-din the son of Mohamed, sailed further south along the West coast and settled in Beruwela (Ethnological Survey of the Muslims of Sri Lanka – Sir Razik Fareed Foundation).

Beruwela’s contribution to the cultural diversity and racial amity is un-paralleled in the history of Sri Lanka, from the period of the original Arab settlements to the present day where the Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims and others lived in harmony. The Arab traders were inspired by the Islamic teaching of fairness in business dealings, as taught by the Holy Prophet Muhammed (Sal), Who was a trader himself when He received the Revelation from God Almighty. The Holy Quran too commands the faithful to “Give full measure when you measure, and weigh with a balance that is straight: That is better and fairer in the final determination” (17:35). It was due to nurturing such traditions that the locals developed an immense trust in them.

In an era when there was no banking system, the Sinhalese used to deposit their jewellery and other items with village Muslims, when they leave their houses and go on Negam. Upon arrival they will receive their valuables correctly and safely. Even the jewellers were always purchased from the Moors by the wealthy Sinhalese.

Beruwela was also a citadel of Islamic art, which is evident by the beautiful ancient mosques that are built in the area. The sight of the Kechchimalai Mosque along the coast has always been a treat to the weary traveller. The Muslim travellers never fail to stop at this place to refresh themselves physically as well as spiritually.

    Philanthropists

The precious stones from the ‘Gem City’ Ratnapura, found its way to Beruwela where they traded hands. It was a valuable source of foreign exchange for Sri Lanka for a long period of time. The great philanthropist of Beruwela, Alhaj M. I. M. Naleem, who rose to prominence through the gem trade, contributed much for the development of Islamic culture and tradition, the founding of the Islamic Institute, Jamiya Naleemiya being one of them, following the footsteps of his distinguished immediate predecessors such as Alhaj N. D. H. Abdul Cafoor and ‘Rubber King’ E. L. Ibrahim Hajiar, who have donated much of their wealth for the development of education and for the welfare of the disabled and orphans. It should be gratefully remembered that Alhaj N. D. H. Abdul Cafoor provided land and buildings for Zahira College, Home for the Blind in Ratmalana and Boys Home & Gafooriya Arabic College in Maharagama, among others. E. L. Ibrahim Hajiar used to distribute foodstuff and dates among thousands of people sans any communal and ethnic differences during the month of Ramazan, beginning from Veyangalle in the Kalutara District up to the bridge of Moratuwa.

When the Portuguese first arrived in Ceylon in the early 6th century, Muslims have already developed to an indigenous lot developing their own and unique identity, with a mixture of Arab, Sinhalese and Tamil blood. Tamil has gradually replaced Arabic as their language of communication, largely due to their interaction with the South Indian Muslim traders. The usage of Arabic-Tamil (Arabu-Thamil) in which poems were composed eulogising the lives of the Holy Prophet, His Companions and the famous Saints of Islam was prevalent among them. Even today, many Muslim families are seen sitting together in a circle, singing these poems in a rhythmic tone. This practice has served as an important tool to inculcate Islamic values among Muslim children for centuries.

The Muslims were also equally adept in Sinhala, a trend that continues unabated to this day, although English too is used among a bulk of the present generation. For the Portuguese however, the Muslims have always been ‘Moors,’ who ruled Spain for eight hundred years between the 7th and 15th Century A.D. It is this reference that came here to stay and used by the Sri Lankan Muslims.

Beruwela has also produced a Muslim ruler by the name of Vathimi Raja who reigned in Kurunegala for a brief period during the 14th Century. He was the son of Buvanekabahu I, by a Muslim spouse from Beruwela. He is still remembered by the people of Kurunegala as Vathimi Deiyo or Gale Bandara Deiyo. There is also a Vattimirajapura housing scheme, which was fittingly opened by the late Alhaj M. A. Bakeer Markar and appropriately named in remembrance of the King Vathimi. As destined, when he was the Speaker, Alhaj M. A. Bakeer Markar too was the acting Head of State for a brief period in 1981, when President J. R. Jayewardene and Prime Minister R. Premadasa left for England to attend the wedding ceremony of Prince Charles and Princess Diana.

    The Bard of Beruwela

The tradition of racial integration and linguistic ability nurtured by the early Muslims still flourishes this area. The name of Bakeer Markar – the Bard of Beruwela – was synonymous with Beruwela in the post-Independence era. He studied in Tamil under the able guidance of Pulavar Pandithar Muna Nallathambi at Zahira College, Colombo. He also, mastered the Sinhala and English languages. With the guidance of his mentor and political guru Dr. T. B. Jayah, he grew up to become an amiable leader, who was loved by people of all communities. He finally became the Governor (Ruler) of the Southern province, incidents that could be regarded as a historic sequence to the ascension of a previous ruler from Beruwela to the Throne.

Bakeer Markar’s eldest son, the present Minister of Mass Communication too has endeared himself not only to the people of Beruwela but also to the entire nation. Educated at Ananda College, Colombo, he was the President of the Sinhala Debating Society of this leading Buddhist institute. Today, Imthiaz is popular as one of the best Sinhala orators of this country. Minister W. J. M. Lokubandara paid a rich tribute when he described Imthiaz as a ‘Jathika Sampatha‘ (a national treasure) during the Mass Communication Ministry’s Budget Debate in Parliament in 2002.

    A cultural heritage

It is most commendable that this ‘heir to the throne,’ Imthiaz Bakeer Markar issued a postage stamp on 8th June 2003 to commemorate the first Muslim mosque of Ceylon, the Masjidul Abraar, which is situated in the Maradana area of Beruwela. This Masjid was built in the year 920 AD by the Arab traders in conjunction with ‘Meelad-un-Nabi,’ the birthday of Holy Prophet Mohammed. Under the guidance and leadership of the elder Bakeer Markar, the mosque was rebuilt restoring its pristine glory – magnificently designed by that eminent architect W. J. Neil Alles of Surti & Alles Chartered Architects. The names of Alhaj S. M. A. Hameed and M. N. A. Haniffa (popularly known as ‘Haniffa Baas’) are also forever remembered for their valuable contribution in renovating the mosque. A significant feature of the event was the declaration of this mosque as a place of historic significance and a cultural heritage by the Minister of Human Resources, Education and Cultural Affairs, Dr. Karunasena Kodithuwakku.

It is very significantly that, this is first time in the history of our country that a place of Islamic culture and heritage has been declared as a national monument of the Nation.. (Ain also means Eyes ,also Ya ainee ,oh my Eyes)

Dear Moderator how come Mr.One is permitted to bash a community endlessly and the rest mentioned in my comment & mine has been completely deleted .,did what I said about The LTTE offend you? no worries if you do not wish to publish it I have hundred and one places I can do with the whole content .. adios Amigos!!!!!!!
    =======================================================================
@One ,has to be only one of his kind is it not? God has reasons for everything ,it is we Muslims who risked our own lives and protected this ungrateful lot whenever they were attacked ,see his attitude can you imagine if Mahinda has not done what he did and if the LTTE has won what would have been the situation? and look at his vocabulary is straight from the gutters ,besides he also seems to be suffering from amnesia ,has he forgotten how ruthless and un patriotic they have been all along? and how lives they have been responsible for? this whole game was trying to get the Muslims to accept themselves as Tamils but on their terms (Low caste) cast a system of mental sickness every Tamil suffer to date. so they can use us for the Northern election and then kick us out like they did before,I support 100% Mahinda’s idea of taking over the lands in north it is a paramount of importance to make sure that The Tamils never will ever be a Majority in North and east ever again. never mind the problem we have with The Sinhalese it is our problem at least we are not traitors who want to separate the Land ,we will settle our issues with the Sinhalese in our own way and after that you Tamils like ONEs take care of your buts ,Azath sally became a Milking cow to you guys by falling into you Tamils trap he is behind bars by forming a Muslim Tamil alliance the biggest blunder he ever made. Tamils like the “ONE” are full of venom hidden deep inside filled with jealousy and hate, at least the Sinhalese are more open and can be reasoned out , whatever problem today the Muslims are facing are nothing but the hidden hands of the Tamil cowards , like their big time Hero Praba the Coward who hid and sent poor innocent youngsters denying their education ,life by black mailing them to die as suicide bombers and gave them cyanide but when his time came he was kissing the feet of the soldiers to spare his life ,he did not eat the cyanide. This is The Bravery of you Tamils, soon The Sinhalese will understand what you guys have done and they will once again be after your buts.Israel wont take you in sure. by the way who told you that Numeric were The Tamils contribution? this shows your general knowledge, even the westerners who do not like Arabs will tell you it was The Arabs who contributed towards not Just Mathematics but many more to today’s civilization through Medieval times ,I am sympathetic towards you ,please do go and see a shrink for your own good sake.

@gamini -you are not gamini am sure you must be some muthaiya or ponaiya using a Sinhalese Nick, insinuating Portuguese and dutch may have diluted the Moorish blood ,this shows you level of knowledge , Morocco has people with similar resemblance ,I do not wish to waste my time giving tuition to bigots, and remember there are Cost Moors of Tamil origin so you guys do more research and do not get all mixed up in a hurry to spit out your hate and Venom you were hiding thinking one day your great Hero Praba the Coward will win and you can do whatever you want with us.

Long Live Israel

Don’t worry, the Tamils will always be the Majority in the North and East ?? No one can do anything, It is your Mahinda who got kicked out of power now ?. Your idea and wish is gone and lost
Your 100% support for the so called idea has gone in vain and is a lost cause ?? No wonder why you guys are bashed by Buddhist extremists. There are Provincial governments in place and all ruled by Tamils. The Tamils have been given more autonomy and privileges in the North and East.

A Sri Lankan (Tamil) maid working in Singapore was today jailed for 10 years for killing her Indian lover in 2009.

The High Court heard that 34-year old Tharmalingam Puwaneswary, a Sri Lankan national struck her 32-year old lover Murugaiyan Selvam, a permanent resident of Singapore from India, on the head with an improvised dumb-bell weighing more than 5 kg.

Murugaiyan would frequently pick Tharmalingam up from her employers’ home in the middle class housing estate of Serangoon Garden after 10 pm, according to court documents.

The court also heard that Tharmalingam would also lend money as well as buy clothes and jewellery for Murugaiyan, who worked as a supervisor, Channel News Asia reported.

But on the night of the incident in December 2009, an argument broke out between the couple in Murugaiyan’s room, when he asked Tharmalingam to hand over her employers’ chequebook so he could forge a cheque and encash it at the bank.

Tharmalingam then accused him of exploiting her for money and sex.

Murugaiyan slapped her and later fell asleep after the argument.

Tharmalingam then noticed an improvised dumb-bell outside his room, and used it to hit Murugaiyan on the head twice.

She also used a sharp object to stab his groin area before leaving the room.

Tharmalingam, who is married with two children back home, had suffered physical abuse by her husband, and continued to have a difficult relationship with him even while working in Singapore, defence lawyers said in mitigation.

Noting that the act was not premeditated, they added that Murugaiyan had used her for money and estimated that Tharmalingam had given him some 6,000 Singapore dollars of her own money.

There were four other charges on Tharmalingam, involving theft and abetting forgery for the purpose of cheating, which were taken into consideration, the report said.

If you stick to facts, facts that are supported, you should be fine.

However, when one is drowned in Myths, one will attract more critism, as myths cannot be supported.

What are the myths. There are so many…

A few are Nirvana, Rebirth, Heaven, Hell, Purgatory, etc etc.

Muslims have nothing to do with man made caste/class systems. People should judge each other with good character and moral excellence. Unfortunately, most people judge with wealth, power and influence. The ayah/verse below summarises it all.

O mankind! Lo! We have created you from male and female, and have made you nations and tribes that ye may know one another. Lo! the noblest of you, in the sight of Allah, is the best in conduct. Lo! Allah is Knower, Aware. (The Noble Quran 49:13)

Islam has nothing to do with CASTE system but it asks to kill non-Muslims (Kaffirs). Bomb blasts is now common by Muslims.

And Muslims follow a class system. Saudi Arabs are HIGHER than the converted KAFFIRS. Pakis Musims tells they are superior to bengali muslims.

‘What nonsense is this’ as some one asked? I am not interested in this debate about the ancestry of Muslims. A good Muslim friend of mine from the East always keeps on reminding me that their mothers (Our mothers as he says) are Sinhalese. I ask him jokingly how it was -whether it was with the ‘extra three inches’ that the itinerant Arab cloth merchant promised to the village women. He says “No! No! but because their ancestors came without their women. He quotes Ibn Batuta the Moroccan traveller who married a Maldivian girl whom she liked so much and took her with him when he left the Attols. The women in these parts made good wives, my friend says. I retort saying “Must be because of the extra there inches”. Then I remind him about the Muslim who was travelling with a Sinhalese boats-man (Totiya) in his boat and when the Totiya broke into song ” Purasandina Madakapuwa Sameepaye” for the joy of reaching Batticalloa after the long voyage, the Muslim man too wanted to show his competence in Sinhalese poetry. When he began to sing “Puransina matakelapiya s…..paya’ he got a bolt on his head from the oar’s man’s long oar. He had suspected that the Muslim has had an affair with his wife, Puransina!

Humour apart, the writer has given a shot in the arm to Azath Sally. That is the long and short of the meaning of publishing it at this time when Sally is in trouble.

This article is about the true ethnicity of Muslims. But so much of LTTE bashing is done by many. That is the way Muslims do business. It is LTTE which gave them all these powers and positions. Now without LTTE their position power and relevance are being questioned?, So they are trying to bring back the LTTE even at their own expense. I doubt this tactics is going to work again because the Sinhalease and Tamils have worked that out know who and what a Muslim can do and why he does it.

What a sad state of affairs! Dr Narendran has given us a neat and concise history of these unique people – detested by their spritual brethren in the holy land of arabia and now shunned by their own fellow countrymen. The historical bad luck of this eternally magical island has been to be habited by races who seem destined to squabble forever over their vague questionable mongrel origins instead of counting their blessings and working towards a happy future for all to enjoy with dignity. It is indeed one of the mysteries of our civilisation that the enlightened one chose a race, that started in the loins of a legendary lion, to entrust with the jewel of his efforts. The offspring of that vagabond animal has turned into a vituperative, vindictive, ungenerous, ungrateful and selfish mob who must surely disappoint the noble one. The sadness is that the enlightened but emasculated members of this race have abdicated leadership to allow the hooligans and clowns of the species to lead the country headlong into shame and disgrace. The future remains bleak. Please God, save Sri Lanka.

Well Said. This is not Buddhism, and the Lion race is just another MYTH, among many others, used by the politicians and Monk racists. No Lion genes were found in South Asia among the people.

Need to keep informing about the MYTHS, because the MYTH followers keep rejecting. Even after 470 of Copernicus, 25% of the Americans still believe the Sun goes round the Earth.

The Natives and Religions of Sri Lanka

Sinhala Buddhists Monk Mahanama and Tamil Hindus and Racism

      1. A fraction of Sinhalese Buddhists now are racists. They were NOT racists to begin with. They were TAUGHT by Monk Mahanama to be racists with MYTHS written to Mahawamsa. This was perpetuated later on by other monks and other racists. In fact, DNA analysis of the so-called Sinhalese will show that they are not much different genetically from the Tamils of South India and Sri Lanka.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinhalese_people

      2. Sri Lanka was originally Animist, Hindu and Jain with Veddah, Yakka and Naga people. Even Vijaya and the other immigrants were either Jain or Hindu. Even Lord Buddha’s parents were Hindu.

      3. Monk Mahanama and other monks used the kings, and the kings used the monks, to reinforce each other’s position and hegemony and promoted Sinhala Buddhist Nationalism. This has nothing to do with Buddhism. Like Arab Nationalism and Islam.

      4. Buddhism and racism became rallying points for the monks and kings. This monk-king axis has nothing to do with achieving Nirvana and rebirth, which are all MYTHS.

Studies looking at the origin of the Sinhalese have been contradictory. Older studies suggest a predominantly Sri Lankan Tamil contribution followed by a significant Bengali contribution with no North Western Indian contribution,[42][43] while more modern studies point towards a predominantly Bengali contribution and a minor Tamil and North Western Indian (Gujarati & Punjabi) contribution.[44][45][46] Multiple studies have found no significant genetic difference between the Sinhalese and the three other major ethnic groups in Sri Lanka (Sri Lankan Tamil, Indian Tamil and Sri Lankan Moor).[43][47][48][49][50][51]
It is debatable whether the Sri Lankan population have genetic links to Far East Asian populations however due to their close links to North East India, there is a likelihood of some traces of East Asian genes.[52]

Original Natives were Vedda, Naga and Yakka, who came from South India.
Veddahs were the First to arrive in Lanka, like the Australian Aborigines and the Native America Indians, After they left East Africa about 70,000 years ago, Yes, the Veddahs are the Original Natives.
Everybody else is an Illegal, Kallathonis.
That includes the Subsequent Migration of Dravidian (Tamil) Hindus and Dravidian Tamil Janins from South India.
That includes the Kalinga-Orissa-Bengali who were Hindus and Jains.
      Later Dravidian Tamils.
      Later Malayalees.
      Later Buddhists.

Later Muslims, the ethnic stock is actually a mixture of Middle Eastern traders who were trading with Sri Lanka before the advent of Islam, called “Yonaka”, and these foreign traders who were mostly Middle Eastern converted to Islam, and got absorbed to both South India and Sri Lanka. So the gene pool of Sri Lanka Muslims contain Middle Easterners, South Indians, native Sinhala, and others. However, it is likely a large percentage of this pool is South Indian, but is not exclusively South Indian.
      Later Portuguese
      Later Dutch
      Later Malays
      Later English
      Later Estate Tamils.

All these arrivals have one thing in common. Myths.
However, one good thing happened. The genes became diversified, and created a more healthy population, instead of too many birth defects due to inbreeding.

Myths of Rebirth, Nirvana, Heaven, Hell, Purgatory etc.
The monks, priests and mullahs exploited the people, in order for them to stay in power and have hegemony over the people.
In Sri Lanka, Monk Mahanama with his myths tat are being believed by many is the cause of the problem.
It is really sad, that Lanka did not stay Native Veddah all these years.

Religion is the Opium of the masses-Karl Marx. How true today.

“Sinhala: Karava Caste likely originated from Kerala and South India.

The Kerala Muslims and Sri Lanka also most likely are related.

If you do a gene test among the various groups, can easily find out.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karava

Karava (pronounced Karaava) also Karave, Kara, Karavaa, Kaurava is a significant Sinhalese community who are considered the second most dominant caste to the majority Govigama. The Tamil equivalent is Karaiyar.

The origins of the term Karave also Kaurava or Kurukula are still debated. The first recorded instance is the Abhayagiri vihara terrace inscription dating from the 1st century BC denoting a ‘Karava navika’.[1][1] One school of thought maintains that the Karava are the traditional coastal folk[2] citing the similarity between the terms for sea-water (Kara Diya in Sinhalese) and Tamil Karaiyar denoting ‘coast men'[3] Another contends that it was the traditional military or warrior caste of Sri Lanka. Although no specefic mention of such a caste is extant in pre-colonial literature, there is mention of Kshatriya, foreign warriors and mercenaries throughout history.[4][5][6][7][8] A third opinion is that it stems from the Kauravas of Indian Folklore, which is also the commomon origin theory of the coastal Gavara and Kavarai folk of Andra Pradesh . The ‘Vesmuhunu’ (mask),[9] ‘Devil dance'[10] and ‘Kolam’ tradition (masked drama/comedy) of the southern coast, while indicating a strong indigenous and a unique tradition, also indicate some affinity with the Karavali of Kerala and Karnataka[11][12][13][2]. Also, an ancient north Indian ship owning and navigating caste was known as Kharva[14] The Mahabarta epic recognized the coastal districts as a distinct community with their chiefs who took part in the epic war (Mahabharata, Book 3, Chapter 51[15]). Karava communities are scattered throughout Sri Lanka including the interior but are predominantly resident on the southern, western and northern coastal districts of Sri Lanka.

Karava myth as well as historical manuscripts such as the Mukkara Hatana,[16] and royal grants[17] indicate that there was also several migrations from Kuru Mandalam Coromandal coast of South India.[8] The Aluth (new) and Parana (old) Kuru korales (provinces) denote such cultural acknowledgement and royal patronage. The migration is by no means one way as there is some evidence of emigration to India[18] Related communities in India are found north of Tanjore in Tamil Nadu well into the Andhra Pradesh coastal areas. All Karava communities throughout Sri Lanka also share a common origin myth that claims an ultimate origin from the Kuru (kingdom) and the epic Kauravas of the Mahabharata. In modern Sri Lanka, occupationally its members include the foremost professionals, capitalists and politicians of Sri Lanka as well as large numbers of wage earners, carpenters, fishermen and farmers. The Karavas came into contact with the Colonial powers ( Portuguese, Dutch and English) before the rural interiors and assimilated (through choice or force) with regards to education, dress, religion and customs and exploited the new opportunities in commercial enterprise earlier than other communities. The Karavas were the most successful at this as all communities strove to mordernize and still do.[19][20][21] Today, many Karava are mixed/married with other communities and castes, particularly the Govigama [22]

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genographic_Project

There is a Table There that shows the gene diversity and original location of the genes.
    SOUTHERN INDIAN GENE POOL:
    Mediterranean 4%
    Northern European; 2%
    Southwest Asian” 58%
    Southeast Asian 35%

Islam always teach to hate. You better expalain how your quran teach you to treat the Kaffir.(non-Muslim).

Muslims of lanka tried to fool the Sinhalese by telling they are “arabs” and nothing to do with Tamil people. But now they are exposed well about their “cheating” technology!

Ex-Islamophobe to produce film on Prophet – Majed Al-Sugairi Okaz/Saudi Gazette
    =======================================================================

Sheikh Abdulrahman Al-Sudais, head of the Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques, delivers a copy of the Holy Qur’an to Arnoud Van Doorn during a reception in Makkah on Sunday as Shahzad Muhammad (right), head of the Canadian Dawa Association (CDA), looks on. — Okaz photo by Abdul Majeed Al-Dowaini

    Majed Al-Sugairi
    Okaz/Saudi Gazette
MADINAH – Former Dutch Islamophobe Arnoud Van Doorn unveiled plans to produce an international film on Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and Islam.
In an exclusive interview with Okaz/Saudi Gazette, Doorn, who reverted to Islam last month, said that he will devote his life fully to spread the true message of Islam and the Prophet of Mercy through promoting the film across the world.
“I will spare no efforts to protect the rights of Muslims in all European countries as well as to serve Islam and its followers throughout the world. I will try my best to repair the damage that I caused to Islam and its Prophet (peace be upon him) through the film ‘Fitna’,” he said.
Doorn, a former leading member of far-right Dutch politician Geert Wilders’ party, visited Saturday the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah to pray and say sorry for becoming part of the blasphemous film. Doorn was among the Freedom Party leaders who produced the film, Fitna.
After visiting the Prophet’s Mosque, he arrived in Makkah Sunday and performed Umrah. Sheikh Abdulrahman Al-Sudais, head of the Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques, and other presidency officials received him.
In the interview, Doorn said that he regrets being a part of such an offensive film. “However, now it is a closed chapter and absolutely I don’t want to recall about it. The film that sparked widespread reactions was a totally wrong step on our part as it contains a lot of misleading and incorrect information that are nothing to with this noble divine religion and its Prophet (pbuh),” he said, adding that he wants to do some remedial work so as to minimize the damage caused by ‘Fitna.’
Doorn said he decided, in cooperation with the Toronto-based CDA, to produce an international film aimed at removing misgivings about Islam and its Prophet (pbuh).
“I will use all my experience in producing an alternative film, which will speak about the true image of Islam and all aspects of the personality of the Prophet (pbuh) as well as his great qualities.”
Doorn repented for his involvement in the blasphemous film. “It was unfortunate that I did not make any efforts to know what really Islam is and who is the Prophet (pbuh) before blindly believing in the misinformation campaign being unleashed by the anti-Islamic forces. When I came to realize that it was not Islam, I decided to study about the religion and that led to my conversion,” he said. “Now, I am really enjoying the beauty of Islam and am extremely delighted in Allah’s great blessing to guide me onto His path. It is an explicable experience for me,” he said adding that his former colleagues in the Freedom Party are angry at his acceptance of Islam, which is still a bête noire for them. “The party stands against Islam and its spreading in Europe. Some of them now consider me as a traitor.”
Doorn has a message to those who oppose his reversion to Islam. “Let me tell them that this is my personal decision and I see a new life in Islam that I don’t want any way to give it up. I happened to see on social networking sites several comments, expressing feelings of antagonism and hatred toward me,” he said adding that all these sprang out of ignorance, contempt and animosity against Islam and the Muslims.
He also thanked all those who supported him and commended him for beginning a new life as a Muslim.
Referring to his visit to the holy land, Doorn said: “Had anybody mentioned me about visiting the land of the two holy mosques earlier, I would have called him a lunatic.
“But what happened now is realization of a dream and it is still unbelievable for me that I am now in the holy city that hosted the Prophet (pbuh).” He continued saying: “I couldn’t control my feelings when I stood in front of the grave of the Prophet (pbuh) as well as in Rawdah Sharif, near the pulpit used by the Prophet (pbuh). When I prayed at Rawdah Sharaif, my eyes were full of tears as I had the feeling that I am in a part of the Paradise.”
Doorn said that he was amazed to see the intensity of love and affection the Muslims have for their Prophet (pbuh). “I also realized the intensity of hatred that some Westerners have against Islam and the Prophet (pbuh) and that was based apparently on their ignorance and prejudice.
“Therefore, I decided to make endeavors to repair the damage caused by the offensive film, which was produced with an ulterior motive of creating sedition in between Muslims and non-Muslims,” he said, adding that he took a pledge in front of the grave of the Prophet (pbuh) that he would strive to spread his true message and his great qualities that are instrumental in promoting peace and harmonious relations among the people worldwide.
While thanking CDA for introducing Islam to him, Doorn unveiled his plans to associate with its Dawa wing, which is comprised of several well-known Islamic preachers and scholars.

The Dalai Lama has implored Buddhist monks in Myanmar and Sri Lanka to put an end to a series of recent attacks on Muslims in their countries. He said Buddhists, including monks, were responsible for recent violence against Muslims in Myanmar and Sri Lanka.
The Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader spoke Tuesday night about religious violence when asked questions following a speech he delivered to 15,000 people at the University of Maryland. He condemned all killing being carried out in the name of religion and then turned to his own religion.

Myanmar has been wracked by sectarian violence that has displaced tens of thousands over the past year, while Sri Lankan Buddhist groups have recently attacked Muslim businesses.

Sri Lanka’s 21 million inhabitants are largely divided into several ethnic groups. The Sinhalese, which is estimated to be at approximately about 15 million, and the Tamils, about close to 2 million in numbers, are the two largest ethnic groups that comprise the population of Sri Lanka. Sheer numbers, overpowering cultures and traditions, gave the Sinhalese and Tamils undue influence in Sri Lankan society, giving rise to the emergence of two official languages. The present forms of both Sinhala and Tamil languages have evolved to include words derived from Arabic, Portuguese, Dutch and British languages – all former settlers.

The Sinhalese language or Sinhala can be categorized to two distinct dialects, the Central/Western dialect and Southern dialect. Sinhalese from the Central and Western parts of Sri Lanka differ from those in the South. As often is the case, Sinhalese natives of different dialects talking to each other would understand each other but a foreigner, who usually learns the Central dialect, won’t be able to comprehend a Southerner. As with any other language, Sinhala has its own script system which is said to be an offshoot of the Indian Brahmi script. The Sri Lankan Tamil dialect has three different branches namely: the Jaffna, Batticaloa and Negombo Tamil dialects. Mainly, the Sri Lankan Tamil differ from each other by phonological changes and varying inflections.

The Moors, the third largest ethnic group which are mainly Muslims, speak Sinhala. They used to have their own language, called the Arwi Language but, at present, can be commonly found in religious texts. English is spoken by 10% of the population. The Burghers speak English on normal occasions but natives, particularly students, can speak English fluently.
