Sri Lankan Parables: The Ruler And The Thinking Citizen

By Basil Fernando

Basil Fernando

Once a ruler told one of his country’s citizens,

Mr. thinking citizen, you have told me some very beautiful principles. For example, you have said that any inquiry against anyone must be fair, and you have explained what fairness means. But you do not seem to understand that I do not like principles.

The thinking citizen then said, Sir, every nation that wants peace and tranquility must fellow good principles.

The ruler said, I do not agree; peace and tranquility can be brought about by the sword.

Such a nation will be a very unhappy place, said the citizen

All unhappy ones can be erased by the sword, said the ruler. And you, thinking citizen, if you wish to be happy, stop thinking or you may soon not have a head to think with.

President’s judges

The ruler said to the judges of the country, “I understand your worries. You have been told that you belong to a separate branch of government and that you are to be independent. Now, I will remove the reason for that worry. From now on, there is only one branch and everyone is part of it. Your loyalty is only to me. Everyone serves me. I created a position called President’s Counsel – PCs. Now I will make you President’s Judges – PJs. And the Chief Justice will be called the President’s Chief Justice – the PCJ.

But we are supposed to protect the people said the judges; we are supposed to protect their liberty.

Do not worry about that. I have declared that people have surrendered their liberties to me. They have become slaves voluntarily. I am now the people’s sovereign. You have only to protect me.

One has to shed robes to think of parables ….or
To go on strike as a Teacher……..

What a sweeping statement that shows much ignorance:
In no other country can you find examples of mobs gathering to shout slogans demanding that judges resign.

If one bothers to research Congress bills introduced to curb the US Supreme Court, one will be as bewildered as Pandit Basil. There are hundreds of them.

Also, in the US, it is recognised by scholars that the Supreme Court does not have unfetered independence.

A supreme court can not function like an Imperial Court. There are limits to judicial independence.

    Mr. Basil Fernando

I understand what you are talking about. You should also know that where we came from…We are Rude,Ruffian King Vijaya’s desendents and we still carry that blood.

Ever since we got Independence, our Socially, morraly and extremely jealous, negative, degenerated, selfish, politicians ruined out country.

The first a..ho..SWRD Bandaranaike who along with D.A. Rajapakse (President Mahinda Rajapakse’s father) left UNP to form his selfish LSSP party, brought Sinhala only policy in 24 hours…and ever since that our country went down the drain.
And for doing this great sin he payed the ultimate price by getting shot by Somarama a buddhist monk.

The Britishers are the first to build tar roads, railway, Tea,tea plantations, bunglows, Rubber plantations, Schools, Universities, Libraries, Hospitals, medicine, Churches, Electricity, water, gas, brought in cars, trolly busses, lorries,Helicopters, planes,Police, Army, Navy, Airforce, Courts, parliament, Cricket, football, netball, rugby, athletics, swimming, golf, cadating, scouts, dams, furniture, cement, Radios, record players, movies, cinemas, shoes, shirts and slacks, hotels, bunglows, guest houses, glass, plates, pots and pans, fork and knives, flour, bread, cheese, cakes, butter, wisky, elephant house soft drinks, banks, Pens, western music, weddings, pencils, telephone, telex, post office, harbours, airports, etc etc. …..I could write a book.

BUT WHAT I WANT TO SAY IS AFTER DOING ALL THESE FOR SRI LANKA WITHOUT BORROWING OR TAKEN A SINGLE PENNY ON LOAN…..I MEAN WITHOUT BORROWING A SINGLE PENNY FROM ANYBODY, STILL OUR UNAPPRECIATIVE, UNCULTURED, THUGS WHILE STILL USING ALL OF THESE WHAT THEY GAVE US FREE….STILL BLAME WITHOUT ANY GRATITUDE JUST FOR THEIR POLITICAL GAINS.

THIS IS THE CURSE THAT OUR COUNTRY IS PAYING TODAY….OUR BAD, SELFISH, UNGRTITUDE, SWOLLEN HEAD,INSANELY PROUD, BAST..DS.

If the politicians would have allowed us to learn in english medium…..all our town and village women would have gone to Europe, USA,Canada or Australia as Nurses and attendants or montessori school teachers and assistants or baby sitters and nannies which those countries still have a very good demand…..but with no proper english education now they go to Middle East as servants….and those house maids are our main foreign exchange earners. Even Bangladesh, India, Malaysdia and Phillipines have curbed sending their women to some of these ME countries…but the ‘cursed’ Sri Lanka Govt. still send them. ALL BECAUSE OUR SWOLEN HEAD BAST..DS DON’T KNOW HOW TO APPRECIATE AND BE THANKFUL.
IN FACT OF LEARNING THEIR TALENTS AND GOOD OF THEM…WE TRY TO SHOW OFF TO THEM THAT WE ARE MORE BIGGER THAN THEM WITH AN UTTER FALSE PRIDE. IF NOT FOR THE BRITISH OUR POLITICIANS WILL BE STILL GOING IN GON KARATTA (Bullock Carts) eating Aggala and wearing Amude, Holding King’s Pandama.(Koppara Lamp)

I WILL BET YOU TODAY…NOW… IF WE EMPLOY TEN QUALIFIED BUSINESSMEN FROM ENGLAND OR USA…..THEY WILL DEFINITELY DO A BETTER JOB AND WILL DEVOLOP THE COUNTRY MUCH MORE THAN THE 225 PARLIAMENT PIN PADI JOKERS WHO ARE EVER SUCKING PEOPLES BLOOD MONEY DOING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. INFACT THEY ARE A BURDEN TO OUR COUNTRY WITH ALL THE CORPORATIONS THEY RUN ARE RUNNING AT MULTI BILLION RUPEE LOSSES TO THE COUNTRY. THEY ARE NOTHING BUT RATA KANA KELAWADDAS.

I BET TEN EUROPEAN BUSINESSMEN WILL DO THE 225 parliament MP’S JOB AND WILL BRING OUR COUNTRY OUT OF THIS CATESTROPHE.

    SUBA ANAGATHAYAK………G.N HAR K.

Does the writer believe that his hypothetical scenario might become factual at one stage in the political and social future of Sri Lanka? If so, what are the people’s responses to it? Perhaps he should write about that next time.

I agree with Jayantha. The day the english left was the day of our decline.
This Sinhala Only/Ape Anduwa slogan wrecked what the british had built up.
I remember that trains ran to time – people set their clocks by trains’ arrivals.
Even today, every parent wishes for education in english for his/her children.
Banda dug the grave for the nation. His wife & daughter completed the burial.
