SriLankan Airlines: Over 300 Flight Attendants To Storm In Flight Services Due To Corruption At Crew Scheduling

A group of 300 plus Flight Attendants of SriLankan Airlines are scheduled to congregate at the premises of their In Flight Services office in Katunayake today, in protest of their flight schedule rosters being manipulated, plus to put an end to the notorious corruption enforced by the airline’s Crew Scheduling Department.

Members of the Flight Attendants Union, especially all Flight Attendants off on the day will also be protesting that none of them will help out the airline by flying on their off days until this issue is resolved.

The airline over the last year was helped immensely by its existing Flight Attendants who flew continuously on their off days and helped the airline save a whopping sum of US $ 8 million by helping to juggle its operation.

This ploy enforced by the airline over the years to maintain an under staff requirement has now finally taken its toll.

Flight Attendant Union members who have had enough of being bounced around by the airline’s management as well, have now decided to take this stance.

A member of FAU speaking on the condition of anonymity as she is barred from speaking to the media told Colombo Telegraph “Nalaka de Soyza the Manager Crew Scheduling has now decided to reduce our standard 12 hour stand by duty to 6 hours, due to the maintenance work carried out at the airport over the next three months. By reducing the standby hours he is merely extending our duty times, if in the event we get called out on stand by to operate any flight. We have had enough of this nonsense. Our lay over flights, majority of which is to the Gulf, have now been stopped. Even our lay over in Singapore is stopped. They have one rule for the pilots and one rule for Flight Attendants. Our CEO Capt. Suren Ratwatte who boasted of being a Crew Resource Management (CRM) specialist, does nothing about it. When he was at Emirates Airline he jolly well adhered to CRM principles that were enforced there. Mind you during his brief stint as the Manager CRM at Emirates, even he enforced certain rules to be applied then. The Pilots and Cabin Crew at Emirates Airline during his tenure always met at every pre – flight briefing, traveled together in the same crew transport and always stayed in the same crew hotel on lay overs. Now he suffers from amnesia after rejoining SriLankan Airlines. Attempts by our FAU President Sakvithi Senadheera to contact our airline’s Head of Service Delivery Chanaka Olagama to resolve this matter was not possible, as Olagama avoided answering his phone calls “.

The airline’s ploy of paying extra monies to Flight Attendants to fly on their off days in order to continue in not recruiting the required cadre, has also largely encouraged corruption within the Crew Scheduling Department headed by Nalaka de Soyza.

With an inefficient Crew Scheduling system named ‘Sabre’, where millions are paid monthly for the usage of its programme, Crew Scheduling Officers on duty have been known to demand monies, gifts and other benefits from Flight Attendants in order to manipulate crew flying rosters. It has become a common secret that Flight Attendants are asked to bank colossal sums of monies in Crew Scheduling Officers’ personal accounts, purchase perfumes, alcohol and cigarettes in exchange for favours.

“A planned roster issued at the beginning of the month looks fine on paper. However one needs to look at the completed rosters of the crew to find out the jugglery that has taken place during the month. Even the Manager Crew Scheduling Nalaka de Soyza’s wife’s roster is completely different at the end of the month, as opposed to what was printed at the beginning. There are other crew scheduling officers who are married to Flight Attendants too. Check their rosters and you can identify the nonsense these guys get up to. Don’t forget to check their bank account details too” said another member of the FAU.

Meanwhile somewhere in the year 2004, a leading airline in the Gulf got their Group Security Department to monitor and tap the telephone lines of their Crew Scheduling Department for over a month. The recorded details of many of the conversations that took place between their Crew Scheduling Officers and Crew, eventually resulted in the termination of services of many staff for manipulation and corruption.

Perhaps a similar investigation needs to be carried out at SriLankan Airlines too.

All attempts to contact Sakvithi Senadheera the President of the FAU for a comment proved futile, as he was away on flight duty to the Gulf city of Doha.

    In my view they have spoiled the hierarchies with santhosam,you all spoiled the system it’s not the fault of yours but right from the schools either students or wants to be a teacher the gate for danthosan there.

    I believe there is a procedure in all Corporates to solve Issues like this,and anybody within such body can take up these problems and sort them out,even if it means that they have to go up to the CEO, AND BEYOND.

    In our days,( we are now retired) that is how problematic issues were solved. Now it appears that ONE has to go public and wash all the dirty linen for all to see and comment, and then attempt to sort them out. Usually, the issues are NOT solved,in this way, and it only leaves harder stances and strained relations, resulting in non cooperation and jobs not done.This happens every where now

    What a sad state of affairs we have come to.

    Agree with jj. This has been the most malpractices airline in the last few years. I don’t understand what the government is doing. If you need to run a profitable organization first start from Human Resources – all the money sucking head of hr and his mistress are runining the department. There are new recruits new faces everyday. People travel on durmtybtravel as they wish. Head of hr must be honeymooning with former business analyst lover too. Wasting money of poor people f this country.

The Colombo skyline has changed thanks to the Chinese, Hambantota is lost, we are in deep “—-” (debt), and all we have is in-fighting between Tamils and Sinhalese with the Muslims throwing in a punch or two, fights between the BBS and the rest, utter chaotic disunity. But I guess, as believers in the myth of “karma”, they deserve it. But I say that there is a God who can save us, if we call on His name.

    What above is true. The problem here is the Crew Scheduling Team uses their system to manipulate Crew minimum rest times which are mandatory. Then these Crew members have to stay onboard the aircraft or at a lounge in some country till Colombo gets open and the company doesn’t pay for it. Pilots get it, cause the CEO and the Pilot Boss are all in same Piloting business!. Then the last problem is the airline is short of cabin crew. Rather than tightening each crew members neck, what they should have done is get more crew and run the rosters in a professional manner without hindering crew rest times. This is the simple logic. We hope the FAU can fight for this!…

    Easily replaceable with far better looking Indian stewardesses. Cabin crew are trained but mostly they are glorified waiters and waitresses. And quality has gone done so badly since the days of AirLanka where good English speaking, poised gals were hired with smart men. Now a lot of village people with no English abilities are hired thanks to MR regime. So if they threaten to strike, UL can easily hire hot looking Indians or hire a new batch of Sri Lankans and train them really fast. They are the most easily replaceable except senior experienced Pursers and Stewardesses with lots of experience. The new Rajapakse Namal Baba’s girls can be sent packing. Hire good Burgher poised girls instead.

    Finally this story hits the news and we need to thank CT for exposing it.
    All other media were reluctant to bust this racket – perhaps they too were in the ‘take’ as most media guys are !
    UL roster manipulation is a loooong standing issue. The sabre system bought at a huge cost to the airline was supposed to address it but never did as it was panipilated manually so that those who give gifts or pay to their accounts will benefit. The mis-management types too manipulated by getting their own rosters done …..the only difference being that they didn’t have to pay for the ‘service’ as they were …….. holding the spoon. So those miscreants in office are a big part of this problem. Among the pilots, Prasanna Karunatileke (one time Chief pilot) was at the top of that list. Many Other pilots and cabin crew took the opportunity to pay and get what they wanted instead of standing tall and fighting the corruption making the lives of the few incorruptible types and their families, miserable.

    Suren Ratwatte made a hash of everything after parachuting in from his foreign airline job and practicing everything other than what he may have learnt at EK – obviously he hadn’t learnt well enough to practice them.

    By the way, rostering at now defunct Mihin Lanka was done by just two efficient persons. The Pilots and the cabincrew had a LIFE other than flying. The same operation at UL is done by over 50 corrupt persons ! Their activities were never monitored or spied upon unlike at other airlines as the some managers disliked that idea for obvious reasons.

    Sri lankan employees are very indisciplined, probably hired by the politician and are not qualified. They take the job as a joke. I heard one hindrance to develop the country is work places are overburdoned with employees and employees are not working that is why the country can nbe developed.

    If and when they find jobs are scarce to come, they will become disciplined and working for the money they get.

    This is concerning the behavior of their country manager in Japan. This individual (namely Mr.Fawzan Fareed) in his mid-forties with no formal skills or affiliations with airlines or tourism, obtained this position with the blessing of his close relative who is none other than Mr.Kabir Hashim.All went well with Mr.Fareid despite his lack of professional qualifications until true nature of his behavior came to light a few months ago. It all started with his afflictions with members of his feminine gender.
    A competition which has already incurred our proud airline a substantial loss along the route.. Providing free joy rides to one’s friends and buddies must be the last thing a country manager should dream of in such a circumstance.. However, that is exactly what aforesaid individual did.
    Among beneficieries of his free air-tickets were not only his friends and assosiates, but also ladies whom he was making advances at. One particular lady, who was issued a totally free ticket to Karachchi, well exceeding her requests for a discount, was bold enough to tell the tale. The whole episode ended in this Mr.Fareed making her sexual advances, forwarding obscene pictures and issuing threats. The evidence of this behavior, captured and publicized by a third party, has now become a public secret among Sri Lankan expat community in Japan. (The evidence including ticket numbers and screenshots of inappropriate advances he made can be provided upon request)

      As a Sri Lankan expat in Japan I have same experience with this individual. Being corrupt to the core.Last month I was looking forward for a discount for trip to Singapore. Despite being a ticketing agent for a reputed Japanese agency and working in close liasion with Sri Lankan airlines, I was rejected outright. Even worse, I was offered a ticket which is well over 30% in excess of normal charges. It wasnt just one Sri Lankan friend in Tokyo who told me that the result wouldve been entirely different had i worn skirts!! This individua is wrecking both our national airline and our national pride..

    Even crew rostering, and the other shift employees’ duty rostering are part of the responsibility of the HR department. I feel all stinking and terribly sick at UL’s HR. Demoralized, demeaned and demotivated employees wouldn’t give their 100% to the organization. It’s high time those who are responsible to get cracking, get ride off all the bad apples, and overhaul the entire HR from top to bottom. This should be the paramount task the agenda of the revitalization of this sick organization which sucks the poor forks money for the entire public is suffering and sacrificing for the upkeep of this stinking corrupt setup.

    the terrible and sick politicians of SL. The government should get rid off all these businesses, hand over to private sector to run as sound businesses, and earn money for the country, else’s country and people would go to the dogs. This is what’s going on, all this while, 70 years since the British left the country.

Business analyst sleeping with HHR and half naked women running around the department such as arsakularatna lady- showing off his black son all around including in social media. This is the calibre of executives in HR. And the most wonderful thing is they get awards also! What a joke? When the airline is sinking day by day and HR being the corrupted areas on top of all from top to bottom, they write bullshut and win awards. Well there can be best practices written on papers but we need practice, not awards and papers filled with HHRs boasting with dahanayaka sweetheart.

    A ll what you are talking of in comments and some other “Sweet Stuff” were brought to light and made in a “Report Form” known as “Waliamuna Report” and the people of the country paid nearly Rs. 4 millions. Now what happened to that “Report” and it’s “Findings”? You all would have read in these columns, what the present Chairman Mr. Dias said about it. He said a Committee of Three Directors examined those “Findings” and concluded that there were no basis to any of the allegations. He continued and said, that “Report” of the Three Directors was sent to the Committee appointed by the Cabinet to oversee the affairs in relation to the SriLankan, and that Committee was “Satisfied” with the Board’s Report. One member of this Committee is (on whom I had a mountain of trust and respect) MP Mr. Eran Wickramaratne. What are we talking here? You and I bark, but the caravan moves unconcerned. Just spend some energy to make a CHANGE; because these people cannot be corrected. Period.

    [Edited out] though Nalaka is famouse for being anti-crew he has his own set of favourite crew members (more goons) who he shares a drink with. They too have commited various crimes in the airline and still have managed to stay with the help of Nalaka and the bold manager. So called F.A.U too has his pals working/ed hand in hand with these people… you can’t trust anyone to be clean…

    It is sad to read the state of Sri Lankan Airlines affairs of work by the Heads..the Head of HR should take a note of all these and provide A remedial action..the Pride of Sri Lanka we boast I guess is no longer but being a worst place..yet seems no person takes responsibility..the political appointments are the worst decision makers..can someone describe who has the aviation industry knowhow..there are persons who have damaged the intragrity as well namely HB.

    The best is to get an update from all relevant authorities and publish the outcome while keep a track with FAU and inquire of the status of their concerns expressed.     Most of the departments in this Airline stink. Addressing some of the points given in this article by an FAU henchman let me clarify certain aspects,

    1) From the beginning Roster Scheduling personnel took bribes in different ways. At the beginning it was Liquor, Cigerrettes, clothes etc. Thereafter. the next lot got smarter and wanted monies deposited in Bank accounts.
    2) Cabin Crew have always flown on off days to earn money faster. Do not for a moment think that they do it for the love of Company/country.
    3) Burghers are ideal for this type of work as mentioned by Koelmeyer as they like to show off a lot.
    4) Not only in HR but, also other departments like Accounts (Pay Roll) are heavily overstaffed.
    5) It is disgusting to see men and women nearing 60 years doing this job. The retirement age for men should be 55 and 50 for women.
    6) Glorified Waiters/Waitresses they are.
    7) Forget about their assistance in an emergency situation, the majority of them will be scared sh-tless.

      This work should be around the clock and section by section put 3 shifts job done.

      In our country that’s what our ministers do then cut the ribbon give extravagance party music booze bring hindi singers or celebrities.
