SriLankan Airlines Smoke Filled Emergency Landing Into Bangkok – Passengers Refuse To Fly Back

A smoke filled SriLankan Airlines flight bound for Colombo from Bangkok declared an emergency soon after taking off last night and returned to Suvarnabhumi airport with passengers and crew on board.

Sri Lankan Airlines flight bound for Colombo from BangkokThe rescue and support offered by Bangkok airport staff in this emergency of flight UL 891, proved to be more hazardous than the emergency itself and in violation of safety and emergency procedures during this incident.

Many passengers photographed were seen loitering on the tarmac unattended soon after Captain Upali Amerasinghe instructed them to disembark the upon the aircraft ramp steps being positioned.

Passengers were seen photographed covering their noses and mouths still suffering from smoke inhalation even after disembarking the aircraft.

In a recorded video captured by a passenger Capt. Amerasinghe appears to be more traumatized than the passengers himself. He is heard announcing “there is nothing to worry about, so please use caution when getting down from the ladder”.

A passenger on the flight Dallas Kelaart speaking to Colombo Telegraph from Bangkok asked “Which ladder was the captain asking us to disembark from? ”

“There was absolute chaos and the ground staff in Bangkok did not have the situation under control. I in fact have refused to fly back on the same aircraft. The ground staff is pushing us to somehow travel on the same plane now saying there is no other choice as the flights from Bangkok to Colombo are all full. This situation has brought bad publicity to the airline, as most passengers taking pictures and videoing the incident handled unprofessionally have already posted these on social media” Kelaart said.

Passenger Kelaart including another 15 passengers have categorically refused to fly back on the same aircraft after it was cleared to operate, stating the flight to be unsafe to travel.

SriLankan Airlines was recently ordered to provide explanation by the International Civil Aviation Organization for alleged safety violations pertaining to flights operated to Seychelles.

It was reported that SriLanka risks been blacklisted by ICAO if proved to be guilty for safety violations.

Whilst publishing this story the aircraft still remains on ground in Bangkok.

Those who fly with this corrupt, crony infested, totally unprofessionally run airline are playing with their lives.

This airline has been politically mismanaged by both the UNP & SLFP. With scant disregard for Sri Lanka’s impoverished taxpayers.

That filthy tradition continues under Yahapalanaya too. Though not to the same degree as with corrupt Hambantota regime.

To this day not a single politically appointed crony who has been running this treasure sucking airline has been punished.

Where the hell is Nishantha Wickramasinghe? Where is Kapila Chandrasena? What happened to that bloody report filed at such high cost?

Where are the Yahapalanaya monkeys? Who were supposed to clean up this mess. Your day of reckoning is not that far away. You are accountable to the people who voted you in.

People who pay to fly this rotten airline are stupid.

Fly Emirates, Qatar, Etihad and you name it. Just do not fly SriLankan!

The air lines you named are expensive to fly to BKK aome even dp not The best choice is Thai,Malaysian or Cathay Pacific. These things haapen with air lines all the time and if you take American,Delta or United aor lines they are much worse!

Well said Gamaya. This article appears to be directed against the Sri lankan Airlines and as you said there have been many cases of a similar manner in many prominent airlines of the world.Instead of praising the Capt of the plane involved for his skill in bringing the plane down safely the writer seems to find fault. Well done Capt Amerasinghe for a job magnificently done and all Sri Lankass are proud of you. Your primary concern has been for the safety of the passengers.
Recently I was travelling in the Emirates Air Bus and as it was on the verge of landing at the airport almost at ground level the plane suddenly lifted itself to the air much to the concern of the 400 odd passengers. The pilot informed us that there was a cross wind and it suddenly became unsafe to land. We were thankful for the pilot for his skill and ability even though it took about another half an hour for the plane to land when the wind subsided.
As for the passengers who refused to fly on the Sri Lankan after the repairs were done I would request them to look into road transport(which has more casualties than air) as air travel has its risks but more safer than road travel as records show.

Well said Ben. To those who criticise CT saying ‘This is unpatriotic, these things happen to all airlines’, this incident has to be measured against a background of utter incompetence and corruption as reported by CT many times. Who care about patriotism when your family’s life is in danger?

On the other hand, if you’re interested in illegal Euthanasia and cannot afford a long and expensive journey to Dignitas in Switzerland, just fly SriLankan. You may get lucky.

RE: SriLankan Airlines Smoke Filled Emergency Landing Into Bangkok – Passengers Refuse To Fly Back

    1. “A smoke filled SriLankan Airlines flight bound for Colombo from Bangkok declared an emergency soon after taking off last night and returned to Suvarnabhumi airport with passengers and crew on board.”

    2. “SriLankan Airlines was recently ordered to provide explanation by the International Civil Aviation Organization for alleged safety violations pertaining to flights operated to Seychelles.”

    3. “It was reported that SriLanka risks been blacklisted by ICAO if proved to be guilty for safety violations.”

This is bad, bad and bad. This is really going to hurt the airline and the taxpayers, if they want to keep Air Lanka afloat. What is the point in sending more women to the Middle East and get them back in body bags, just to keep this turkey afloat?

They should merge or sell as son as possible.

Fly Sri Lankan Airlines and put your life in jeopardy !

  • 45
    10

Ben you hypocrite, where were you when an emirates 380’landed in colombo with smoke in the cockpit? That aircraft was on ground for about a week. Where were you when a turkish plane landed so hard in colombo where they had to replace all the landing gear? Did you broadcast not to fly them as “rotten airlines”?
Thushari, whats your gripe with the engineers? Did not get a job at srilankan? Thank god you didn’t as i am sure no one would not have understood half the things you say! How many years were you on the “streets (campus)” shouting “diyaw diyaw” while we tax payers payed for your studies and were delayed going home to our kids because of your stupid marches.
And that “white Sri Lankan” Kelaart just because the capt used the word ladder!!!!! Didnt you think the rest of the announcement was perfect? For sure a sapathu burger trying to be posh! Go live in england with your stupid perfect english. Capt traumatised because he used the word ladder, ha ha. Do you know how to spell traumatised???
Spot on, uncle Neville, the card board pundit Rajiva will have a field day soon. He could not manage Paris and would have been kicked out if not for the political god fathers. Sure must be eyeing a consultancy job at srilankan. Uncle neville, why for heavens sake not board that flight? How can you say that from where ever you are?
Even the “sri lanka blacklist” story is all cooked up and there is a lot more than eye can see. The civil aviation authority has a well established proud record in ICAO audits with the only shortcoming being the horrible red tape and belief of “the gods given right to control” of the most of the staff who work there. Maybe a good thing too but they need to be a bit human and not “devils in gods kitchen”.

You are either a political appointee or you clearly don’t know anything about what happens here at SLA Engineering…just a few years ago, one of the A330’s had a hole bigger than your head punched into it’s fuselage by some incompetent fools trying to drive a jib/jacklift truck (used during refuelling) without the proper training and without a spotter. That cost the country 1Mn USD to fix (you never hear of that in the media, do you?) There are other incidents amounting to millions of dollars every year that arise purely due to the incompetence/political appointees at SLA Engineering and the lack of management oversight/interest. It is amazing that none of the craft have yet fallen out of the sky.

My advice, as a just retired SLA Engineer – do not fly on this airline if your life depends on it. I invite all media units to investigate into this deeper (and not listen to the Bandula types who are willing to cover up any and all things possible with lame excuses like ‘this happens to other airlines too’ even at the risk of hundreds of lives) and you will be shocked.

The incident you are referring to happened in Thailand. And was paid for by Thai airport services as it was their fault.
Are you sure you are an engineer? Do you even know what an aircraft is?

        • 3
          4

That is a blatant lie. Just because you say it happened in Thailand doesnt make it true. The incident happened on Sri Lankan soil and I was witness to it. Why are you so defensive? Sounds like you have something to hide?

          • 3
            0

Perhaps you are talking of another incident. I too am aware of the BKK thailand collision which happened a few months or a year ago and was reported in the newspaper too.
But of you were truly an employee of Sri lankan or even just a ordinary citizen who reads the papers you would be aware of this.

Banda, It may be true that there are other airlines that are rubbish but it does not excuse our SriLankan State Airlines to be rotten. We must try to be above all others but alas, no. I’ve always flown SriLankan because of very good service but it all went downhill when they fired the Emirates management skills. My own flight in Dec.2013 from Colombo to London they incredibly ran out of hot water, among other things, and no morning tea. This lot of Rajapakse cronies are not fit to run a Thosay Kade, let alone an Airline.

        Haik,
I agree that airlanka service standards have gone down thanks to the crew union. My comments were not an excuse for poor managment. My concern is that it should not be a targeted campaign but constructive criticism. A good example of pathetic comments is by the engineer, take a bet it has to be “sour grapes” for not getting an extension!

These are all the ill effects from the past regime and their corrupt policies. Yahapalanaya took over a country that was financially, morally and commercially bankrupt. Having said that, yahapalanaya needs to rectify this matter by firstly educating the public on the current state of the country (in laymans language) and how they need to rally around and put the nation back on a competitive and profitable footing. Every citizen has a role to play. Most of the Yahapalanians are either busy by keeping MR and his stooges at bay or simply helping themselves (like Arujuna M and the Ranatungas and Karunanyakas employing family) or wrapped about fighting for a second luxury vehicle and have lost focus and commitment to fix the mess MR has left. MR is using his own mess hit back at the Yahapalanaya government and all Yahapalanians are simply sitting and taking it.

It’s time to Get your act together !!!!!!!!

c’mon guys give the airline some slack..

stop being hypocritical. At least a decision was made to return back to base rather than fly 13 hours from Miami to Doha after taking out runway lights and causing substantial damage to the aircraft.. cough cough Qatar Airways cough cough

All airlines face mid air problems and it is nothing out of the ordinary. CT just sensationalizes these stories. The pilot stumbled under pressure and said ladder instead of stairs and the passenger makes a huge scene about it but they are forgetting that if not for him, they wouldn’t be able to live another day.

    typical ungrateful Sri Lankans.

Well done to the pilots and crew for landing the aircraft safely! Or this would have ended up as another fly dubai incident if this was a middle eastern carrier.
From what I hear the Bangkok authorities had informed the captain that ladders would be placed to expedite the passengers to disembark hence he made that announcement.
No matter how minor the the fault may have been it is the professionalism or the training of the crew that prevents it from escalating into a life threatening situation.
Well done captain amaresinghe and company!

No matter what has been said in the past about the airline this is a triumph for Srilankan that the plane has landed safely. This smoke is probably due to something in the cargo. Happens numerous times on Middle eastern carriers.

Yet the author seems to be on a very anti SriLankan rant as has been the trend from all the past few articles written by the same guy.
Is it correct that he is an Emirates employee? Why is his name not included in the article anymore like in the past when he was questioned about his emirates background?
    2+2 does indeed equal 4 I guess.

These men grabbed funds but seem to have done nothing for the improvment of Srilankens shoudl be brought before the courts and be jailed for the rest of their lives. That man Shiranthi s brother should be made accoutable for all the mess left by. He just enjoyed the beautiful stewardesses – being a Naki manamalaya his testicles should be removed as prevetion actions not allow more to fall on him again. These men are real corrupt kings.

No any offence done by Srilankan airline side. The Captain has done his job well. The ladder should be provided by Airport emergency response team. Captains announcement “there is nothing to worry about, so please use caution when getting down from the ladder” is the very perfect word to reduce consequence due to exiting people.
So IMO no issue in Srilankan side but the issue is with Bangkok airport.

In 2008 a British airways 777 crashed short of the runway in London Heathrow. The British media hailed the pilots, crew and airline for their heroism and professionalism in reducing casualties.
In 2016 a Srilankan airlines aircraft returns to Bangkok SAFELY due to the heroism of our local boys. Our media (Or individuals) twist the truth and refuse to give credit where it is due and instead paint the airline as incompetent.
This is typical Sri Lanka. When the white man conquered us he gave us a sense of inferiority you can clearly see in the writing of the article. He made us yearn after the white and Arab people and treat them as better than us.
Break your chains Sri Lanka. These boys have done a good job and I know our srilankan pilots and crew are far better trained and professional than the middle eastern carriers. This is quite obvious on how Emirates, Qatar, etihad offer exorbitant salaries to our boys and girls to come fly with them. We should be thankful we still have people who are patriots to this country who will not let the Arab mans money sway them into deserting us. Fly srilankan! Support our country and work towards a better Sri Lanka! Rather than complaining and kissing the buttocks of foreigners.

Interesting expose worthy of colombotelegraph. The author of the article was an ex Sri Lankan employee who left us to the Emirates in search of Arab money. He was later terminated by Emirates due to incompetence.
He the returned like the prodigal son to SriLankan who informed him in no certain terms that the airline did not require his services as he had deserted us and later been terminated by Emirates.
So here he is now on a personal vendetta to discredit SriLankan like a woman scorned, twisting truths and bending facts just like a certain leader of the previous regime!

Be thankful that you are alive to share your comments mr.kelaart. It wouldn’t have been possible if not for the experts (pilots and the crew). As far as I know, flight crew have done a excellent job. BKK ground staff should be blamed for not expediting the evacuation process. The flight was landed safely in Colombo this morning with 95% of its original passengers.I’m a frequent traveler of SriLankan for almost 10 years and never experienced an emergency onboard. Anyway I’m quite confident that cockpit/cabin crew are well trained to handle those situations…

To all you people talking this and that.. forget the people, the article and all the nonsense. Let me ask you one question.. would any of you take the same flight back over an open ocean.. at 30k ft.. knowing that half way there… there is nowhere to land?

    Didn’t think so. Hahaha

By this idiotic logic you should start traveling by ship.
Smoke in the cabin can happen to any airline. And it has happened many times before to Emirates, Qatar etc.. (First time I have heard it happening on SriLankan)
I for one will fly Sri Lankan if this situation were to happen as you have asked simply because the crew have quite aptly demonstrated that they can handle it safely. Kudos to Sri Lankan training.

What kind of a journalist writes inaccurate, baseless, irrelevant articles like this?

The pilots need to be praised for their quick reactions, good judgement, situational awareness and decision making and great skill to turn back this smoke filled aircraft immediately and land it safely without any casualties! This was done thanks to the high quality training and safety standards maintained at srilankan which actually has a very high safety record. If you ask any pilot (Boeing or Airbus) they will tell you this is one of the toughest exercises they practice during their simulator training. Capt.Amarasinghe and his co pilot has done exceptionally well if you would ask any aviation expert!

Next time you publish an article kindly do some research about the incident and please check your article for gross grammatical errors which as a journalist you should be doing rather than criticizing a pilot for a wrong word used which in his mind is the last thing he is worried about since for him his passengers and crews safety is paramount!

“What kind of a journalist writes inaccurate, baseless, irrelevant articles like this?””
You have grown up in a shape shape culture with ¬impunity`

why do you think they are disenchanted and on the tarmac ??

There are international norms of what compensation to passengers should be in a similar event- distress caused, time delay. If you knew the meaning of hospitality which Air Ceylon knew all you staff afraid of your job would never behave like this on CT. if it was us we would have sued you by exposing you on money box first.

A few who lined their purses and fattened their bellies
are weeping bucket loads of tears from Sri Lankan Airlines.

Their logic – because Emirates Airbus 380 made an emergency
landing in Colombo and Turkish airlines had a hard land at
BIA, they ask, what is wrong in the emergency landing by
    Sri Lankan in Bangkok.

These hare brained monkeys and their cohorts seem to think
it okay as long as it happens to foreign airlines. What if
there is a crash. The idiots will use the same excuse.

Of course, you cannot blame the pilot for his English. Chinese
pilots or for that matter those Germans too know little. And as
for the crowds loitering on the tarmac, that is a problem for
    the Thai authorities.

But the paid coolies should be more circumspect when this so called
national carrier has been bleeding the nation. It is the poor taxpayer
    who had been paying.

It’s so sad how people with no aviation background or half baked aviators want to be arm chair critics, ask any pilot and he/she will tell you what is the SOPs (standard operating procedure) is when it comes to smoke evacuation, the smoke was apparently caused by a failed Airconditioning system, this Aircraft flew into BKK without any issues and unfortunately it had to happen just after take of from bkk,the action taken by the captain is correct and his decision of using the “Ladder” instead of deploying the slides was also correct as the captain had assessed the situation under control coz the smoke had stopped after switching off the particular system.
If they had deployed the slides many passengers would have been injured,of course if the situation was not under control the captain would have deployed the slides.
It is true the Airline has been mis managed by politicians and higher managemen/political appointees but SLA has a fantastic safety record thanks to all our pilots, engineers and the technical staff who are very well trained.
Human errors are inevitable anywhere in any industry and aviation industry is not a exception, machines, may it be an old DC3 or a modern Airbus 380, can fail and the crew are competent to handle it.
Please do not comment irresponsibly without getting the facts correct.

  • 15

Ladder or stairs – what does it matter. This idiot Dallas should should realise that that the Captain got them out of the aircraft without using the slides which would definitely have caused injuries. He did a good job in assesing the dangers faced by the passengers and since it seems to have been an airconditioning problem and not electrical he made the correct decision. Good job Upali. CT should be more unbiased when reporting. Get tbe facts right please

They will never tell you as they are more interested in job.
My experience Air Transat- Toronto – London.(couple of months ago when the terror alert was very high after explosion)

99% of passengers did not care but were worried about someone waiting to pick them up at arrivals.
Air was coming in from the exit door and steward was putting blankets. Jokingly i asked him to build a wall with blankets. he smiled came to me and said don’t worry we will take you to london safely. I told him when it starts climb we will all be rocking and the meters would be faulty.
So he asked what do you want ` Safety First` and passengers like on this Ct called me nut so I played the game with them `nut` having fun (most passengers were immigrants like italian/candians asians lots of whites but few english but old) Half hour later on the climb we were rocking and the captian diverted top Montreal – 4 hours delay in all t- the beading had fallen off at Toronto.
Typical flies no one said thanks but took credit for how they behaved. I Smiled just another day out with flies and at london I saw police with machine guns- what a sight:0

BTW They extra fed anyone one the house and on disembarking the private Canadian airline gave us all a form to fill for compensation -distress caused and time delay.
The problem with SL airline staff is they are frightened of job loss, and the yakko bureaucrats. They have taken hospitality for granted but if it was Brits they would be pleading we are broke pls.
          sad case.

Easy, Easy now. The flight crew responded to the situation professionally.

I am interested to know, what caused smoke inside the cabin.

    Again, well done crew.
